Jet off to the first snorkeling site at Payu Island, the habitat of local sea turtles. Search for sea creatures during a 40-minute dive session before heading to the next stop, Bangu Island, the 7th of the 9 Similan Islands.

After a 15-minute ride, arrive at Bangu and discover more of the underwater world’s beauty as colorful fish swim beside you. Enjoy another 40 minutes to swim, watch the fish, and explore the coral reefs.

Later, stop at another island where you can enjoy a picnic lunch near the beach at Honeymoon Bay. Take a small walk through a nature trail to the beach at Princess Bay. Relax, swim, and take memorable pictures of the sparkling waters.

We joined this tour on the advice of a friend who had been here before. There cannot be a place this beautiful! We went with my wife and we were really amazed. The team was very warm and smiling. They worked very hard to make us happy. It was very good for us that the national park fee was included in the tour. The pick up from the hotel was on time. The open buffet lunch was delicious. The water was so beautiful that I cannot find words to describe it. An untouched green nature and a crystal clear sea. We fell in love with Similan, I wish that day had never ended!!!

Paul Haider

The islands were breathtaking, and the snorkeling was some of the best I have ever done. The guides were knowledgeable and friendly. Loved every minute!

Hüseyin Güneş

The tour was seamless, and the guides made sure we had a great time. The snorkeling was out of this world, with so many fish and coral to see. The islands themselves are beautiful, with white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. Would do it again in a heartbeat!

Get ready to explore this fantastic destination and make unforgettable memories!

Discovering Similan Islands’ History

The Similan Islands is a group of oceanic islands off the coast of the Phang Nga Province in Southern Thailand. It is approximately 119 kilometers from Phuket mainland.

The name ‘Similan’ comes from a Malay word meaning ‘nine’ for the nine original islands.

  • Koh Hu Yong (1)
  • Koh Payang (2)
  • Koh Payan (3)
  • Koh Miang (4)
  • Koh Payu (6)
  • Koh Hin Pousar (7)
  • Koh Similan (8)
  • Koh Bangu (9)

Later, these nine islands were added, with two more in 1998.

  • Koh Bon (also known as Koh Talu) (10)
  • Koh Tachai (11)

These islands have a long history, from being part of ancient Andaman sea routes to becoming a top tourist spot.

Getting to the Similan Islands

Similan Islands, Phang Nga Bay

Starting Point

The two most popular starting points from the mainland are Phuket and Khao Lak. These coastal cities are the most accessible, and numerous tour operators offer various tour packages, including day tours and multi-day trips to the Similan Islands.

Speedboats or Ferries

Speedboats are the most popular choice for reaching the islands. Traveling from Phuket usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours and about an hour if traveling from Khao Lak. Speedboat tours are faster and more convenient but pricier than the ferry.

Long tail ferry boat is another standard option to get to the Similan Islands. These trips often take longer than speedboats. However, it will give you more space and a better opportunity to appreciate the scenic beauty of the Andaman Sea.

If budget is not an issue, private chartered boat trips will give you a more leisurely experience. Trust me, you don’t want to be crammed up like sardines in a can for over an hour. And if you brought tons of stuff or bulky diving gear, this can be a hassle for you and other passengers in the boat.

Best Activities in the Similan Islands

Island hopping.

With plenty of islands to visit, island hopping is a MUST activity in Similan. Each of the islands offers its own unique charms. While you can’t visit all in one day, selecting a tour that covers the most sought-after highlights is still best.

Better yet, plan a multi-day tour to maximize your vacation in the Similan Islands. The schedule is more relaxed, giving every stop ample time to be cherished.

Take advantage of Island #8 Koh Similan’s iconic Sail Rock and pristine beaches. Island #4 Koh Miang’s white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters are ideal for water adventure enthusiasts.

When is the best time for island hopping?

Between November and April, when the weather is most favorable. During this season, you can expect calmer sea water and clearer skies, perfect for island and underwater adventures.

Our Tip: Book your tours in advance to ensure availability and to get the best package rates.

Snorkeling and Diving Adventures

Similan Islands, Phang Nga Bay

The alluring crystal-clear waters of the Similan Islands make it a popular hotspot for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. The island’s vibrant underwater marine life and coral reef promises to give you a world-class snorkeling and diving experience.

The Christmas Point is one of the most notable dive spots on Island #9 – Koh Bangu. This spot is renowned for its colossal granite boulder formations and exciting swim-throughs of more than 20 meters deep.

The bottom is quite sandy. There are not many coral reefs to see, but there are plenty of large marine creatures to encounter, including black-tip reef sharks, barracudas, Napoleon wrasse, and manta rays (if you are lucky), to name a few.

Another popular dive spot on the island is the Elephant Head Rock, located between #7 Koh Hin Pousar and #8 Koh Similan. This spot is most suited for advanced divers as it tends to have stronger currents. So, make sure to check the water conditions first before deciding to jump.

Our Tip: Always snorkel with a buddy and stay within your comfort zone. Ensure that you book only licensed dive instructors as your guide.

Nature Trekking

The adventures in the Similan Islands go beyond the seas. The island is also blessed with lush jungles and hiking trails waiting to be explored.

The most popular trekking route is the Nguang Chang Bay to Horseshoe Bay on Island #8 Koh Similan. The trail is about 2.5 kilometers in total. Expect to encounter exotic birds, small monkeys, rare flower species, and many rattans and bamboo trees along the way, making it a perfect activity for nature lovers.

The Thai Navy’s abandoned lighthouse is a must-visit spot here. The viewpoint from the top gives you the most breathtaking scene over the turquoise-blue waters of Similan. Just make sure to seek permission from the park rangers.

Our tip: Apply insect repellant before embarking on your trail. Scratching an annoyingly itchy skin is not the most pleasurable way to get busy during a vacation.

Bird Watching

Similan Islands, Phang Nga Bay

For wildlife enthusiasts, bird watching in the Similan Islands is a delightful experience. The island has been classified as a “Grade A” park by Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP).

So, it’s no surprise that it is a haven for up to 120 bird species, some of which are endemic to the region. Keep an eye out for the Nicobar pigeon, Parasitic jaegers, and Roseate terns, among many others.

Island #3 (Koh Payan) is the primary nesting site of the Nicobar Pigeon. Their breeding season usually starts from mid-March onwards.

Our Tip: Early morning is the best time for bird watching. Observe silence, as birds can get easily distracted by unfamiliar noises.

Beach Exploration

If you want to chill and do nothing, sit back and relax on Similan’s powdery, soft white sands and picturesque views. Spend undisturbed time sunbathing, building sand castles, or simply enjoying the tranquil ambiance. The beauty of these untouched beaches is a reminder of nature’s unspoiled splendor.

Our Tip: Bring sunscreen, a wide-brim hat, and lots of water. It’s easy to get sun-scorched and dehydrated in the tropical climates.

Capturing the Sunset

Similan Islands, Phang Nga Bay

The golden hour in the Similan Islands offers an exceptional canvas for photographers. As the sun slowly dips low, the island is covered with warm, golden hues that are just the perfect backdrop for stunning photographs.

Best Spots for Sunset Photography:

  • Sail Rock: A hotspot for capturing the vibrant colors of the sky against unique rock formations.
  • Koh Miang’s Beaches: Long stretches of white sand provide a serene setting for wide-angle sunset shots.
  • Koh Similan’s Viewpoint: Offers a panoramic view of the archipelago, ideal for capturing the scale and beauty of the sunset.

Our Tip: Use a polarizing filter to enhance the natural colors and reduce glare from the water.

Accommodation in the Similan Islands

Unfortunately, staying overnight at the Similan Islands is not currently possible. It is part of the national park’s effort to preserve the island by limiting the number of visitors. For accommodations near the Similan Islands, Khao Lak is the nearest famous tourist town, offering a variety of resorts.

Responsible Tourism in Similan Islands

Similan Islands, Phang Nga Bay

While the Similan Islands are renowned for their rich marine life and stunning coral reefs, over-tourism in the past years has left its ecosystem delicate. Even minor disruptions can have lasting impacts. Recognizing this fragility is the first step in responsible tourism.

What you can do to help preserve the Similar Islands:

  • Reduce Plastic Usage: The ocean’s health is threatened by plastic waste. Opt for reusable water bottles and bags. Many tour operators support this initiative, providing alternatives to single-use plastics.
  • Coral Reef Protection: Never touch or stand on the coral reefs when snorkeling or diving. These living structures are easily damaged and take years to recover.
  • No Litter Policy: Leave no trace. Ensure all trash is disposed of properly or returned to the mainland.
  • Keep your Distance: Maintain a safe and appropriate distance from the islands’ wild inhabitants. The island is their natural habitat – be respectful of their space.

Even as a tourist, YOUR ROLE MATTERS!

  • When is Similan Islands open?

The park is open from October 15th to May 15th and closed during the rainy (monsoon) season. Visitor numbers are restricted to preserve the environment. During this period, the park’s daily opening hours are from 8 AM to 4 PM.

  • Is there an entrance fee at the Similan Islands National Park?

Yes, the Similan Islands National Park entrance fees are 500 Baht for adult international visitors and 250 Baht for children aged 3-14. Thai citizens pay reduced rates of 100 Baht and 50 Baht for adults and children, respectively.

  • Is there a mobile phone reception on the Similan Islands?

Yes, there is mobile phone reception in the Similan Islands, but it is limited. Only certain service providers, specifically AIS, TrueMove, and DTAC, offer coverage in the area.

  • Can I rent snorkeling or diving gear in the Similan Islands?

Yes, you can rent snorkeling and diving gear in the Similan Islands. Several tour operators and dive shops in the area, especially in nearby towns like Khao Lak and Phuket, provide rental services for such equipment.

  • Are there any health facilities on the Similan Islands?

Unfortunately, there are no comprehensive health facilities directly on the Similan Islands. It’s recommended that visitors bring basic first aid supplies and any necessary personal medications. In a medical emergency, assistance typically involves transportation back to the mainland, where medical facilities are available in nearby towns like Khao Lak and Phuket.

Final Thoughts:

The Similan Islands, a tropical paradise near Phuket , offer an extraordinary blend of adventure and tranquility. Here, you can dive into crystal-clear waters, explore the vibrant marine and wildlife, or relax on unspoiled beaches.

As you conclude your visit, remember the importance of responsible tourism in preserving this natural wonder. Take the beautiful memories and leave only footprints behind, ensuring the Similan Islands remain a treasure for more years to come.

Similan Islands – What to Do in the Similans?

What to do in the Similans?

The Similan Islands form a fabulous archipelago in the Andaman Sea, just 120 km northwest of Phuket island . These small islands are so stunning; you don’t even need to be an excellent photographer to come back with amazing photos.

similan islands thailand 1 1

Most people go there on a day trip tour , but the best way to enjoy the Similan islands is to stay for two days. It’s a little far from Phuket and can be tiring to get there on a speedboat. This way, you’ll have some fabulous beaches for yourself in the morning and the evening, and having the beaches for yourself is priceless.

How to Get to the Similans?

The Similans are open from October 15 to May 15 . Time varies each year so always check before planning a day out there.

To get there, you should consider booking a tour that takes you around for some snorkelling first, then drop you on the main island where a restaurant and basic accommodation are available. If you can afford it, try not to book the cheapest speedboat unless you are on a strict budget. You don’t want to travel like a bunch of sardines in a tin can. Of course, if you are a diver, you’ll have dozens of dive centres offering this destination as a day trip from Khaolak or, even better: as a liveaboard cruise.

The Islands

Similan comes from a Malay dialect word meaning nine. The park had originally nine islands numbered 1 to 9 but expanded to include two islands located a little further away in 1998: Ko Tachai and Ko Bon. Each island has a name and a number, covering 140 km2.

Island 1: Ko Hu Yong Island 2: Ko Payang Island 3: Ko Payan Island 4: Ko Miang Island 5: Ko Ha Island 6: Ko Payu Island 7: Ko Hin Pousar Island 8: Ko Similan Island 9: Ko Bangu Island 10: Ko Bon, also known as Ko Talu Island 11: Ko Tachai

(The two main islands are Ko Miang and Ko Similan)

What to Do?

The main part of the archipelago consists of 9 islands, but you will only have time to visit 2 or 3. The first is very well known for its iconic landmark made of giant boulders perched at the top of a hill overlooking the incredibly clear water of the bay below. You’ll arrive in the morning and will have just a bit of time to explore it and even climb on top of it, maybe one hour, but do it if you can; the view up there is worth it!

The famous Similan Island rock formation

Climbing to the boulders isn’t too hard since there are steps and ladders to reach the top. Standing on this rock will give you a beautiful bird view of the entire bay. The shadow of the boats floating above white sand will give you an idea of how clear the water is.

Your speedboat will probably make a second stop near another island where you can enjoy some great snorkelling. Water is always warm, and visibility is incredibly clear. It feels like flying above coral formations surrounded by thousands of colourful fishes. It would be best if you also got a chance to see sea turtles swimming around the boat.

3 Facts to remember not to get in trouble

  • Do not feed the fish, even if they swarm around you and beg for some.
  • Do not pick up any coral or sea life.
  • Do not walk on the coral; swim!

Staying over in the Similans

The last stop is ‘Island #4’, where you can spend the night in a small tent or an air-con bungalow. I don’t know about you, but we picked the cottage without hesitation. It’s not that expensive, but it is quite hard to get. Nothing fancy, but you get your own (cold) shower and bathroom, a balcony with a bit of sea view, and the luxury of cold air at the hottest time of the year (That’s March to April.)

Overnight in Similan Islands, in front of the restaurant

You can rent a tent, but it can get quite hot in there. Please note that you have to book in advance for tents and bungalows. It would be unwise not to, but it is not easy to book through their website. The last time we went there, it was 570 baht for a tent and 2,000 for a cottage, plus tax.

Speedboat trip to the Similan Islands

A thatched-roof restaurant near the beach serves basic lunch, dinner, water, and soft drinks. That’s the only place to hang out at the end of the day. Not sure if beers are still on sale since they talked about banning alcohol in all national parks. So at this time, I don’t even know if you’ll be allowed to bring your own.

The Similans Islands

This island has two beaches connected by a narrow path meandering through the woods. The beach in front of the restaurant is large with incredibly white sand, well-shaded for a nice rest. The water is clear and incredibly blue here, so don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen. The ocean is warm, and fishes, once again, are everywhere. The beach on the other side of the island is rockier and less attractive, but it’s fun to explore since you have plenty of time. Go to every corner of the island!

similans rock

One of the highlights of our stay was a nightly encounter with a giant snake, maybe 3 meters long. That monster was having a nap at the bottom of the stairs leading to our bungalow. It looked like a python, but we were not sure. So we had the choice between sleeping on the beach or practising our best high jump. We chose to jump, but then I couldn’t resist going back and getting some close-up photos. The lady working at the restaurant told us the next day that such an encounter was very unusual. Considering how small the island is, I wonder how rare.

Useful tips:

Having a waterproof camera is worth it. Turtles are not shy, and you will effortlessly get a nice shot. The entire area is full of corals and tropical fish. It might not be bad to buy one of those waterproof floating bags; they are cheap.

Snorkeling in the Similan Islands

On the not-so-fun side:

  • Buy some motion sickness pills . Most companies will provide some, but better to be safe than sick, and it’s a long trip, so unless you are a sailor: take it; once you start to feel sick, it is not easy to stop it.
  • Don’t sit at the front of the speedboat ; it’s fun for 5 minutes while you are still in the calm waters, but it might become a real roller coaster ride, and your spine might never forget it. Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses AND a cap! The rear end of the boat is the most stable place, but you’ll be in the sun for more than two hours! If you like fantastic scenery but are worried about seasickness, consider a cruise to Phang Nga Bay instead.

Good to know about Similan Islands:

There is a National Park fee, but it is usually included in the speedboat fare. To book a tent or a bungalow, contact the National Parks at (+66) 25 62 0760 is the easiest way. You can contact your travel agent and get a pick up at your hotel or drive to Takua Pa and get a boat from there, which is cheaper.

About the Similan Islands

The Similan Islands are an archipelago of nine islands. They are part of the Similan National Park and are protected islands, meaning they are uninhabited and quite strictly controlled.

In 2018 they capped the number of people that can visit the National Park per day, as the islands were suffering from over tourism. Make sure you book your Similan Islands day trip online beforehand so you don’t miss out!

Besides their stunning natural beauty, the Similan Islands are particularly famous for their epic diving and snorkelling opportunities .

They’re one of the most popular spots in Thailand, and a must-see if you love the underwater world.

Similan Islands day trip options

To get to the Similan Islands you need to take a boat from the harbour in Khao Lak, on mainland Thailand. Even if you’re staying in Khao Lak most Similan Islands day trips will include transfer to the harbour.

There are a lot of different companies doing day trips to the Similan Islands. Generally speaking, they all offer very similar experiences. I have listed below some of the most popular tours with great reviews online.

  • Similan Islands day trip by luxury speed catamaran
  • Similan Islands snorkelling day trip
  • Day tour to the Similan Islands with Love Andaman
  • Early bird tour to the Similan Islands – skip the crowds!

The only thing you want to make sure of is that you chose a tour with a speedboat. Since you only have one day in the Similan Islands, you want to make the most of it! Not spend it cruising on the way there.

Our Similan Islands day trip from Phuket

I visited the Similan Islands on my first trip to Thailand, when I spent 10 days in Thailand . We were mostly based in Phuket and did day trips to the surrounding islands, as well as then travelling on to Koh Lanta.

Most people tend to visit the Similan Islands on a day trip from Phuket. While the Similan Islands are undoubtedly beautiful, it is quite the trip from Phuket.

We woke up at 4:30AM and were picked up at our hotel in Karon Beach at 5AM. We drove for around 1.5 hours in a minibus, picking up other travellers on the way and eventually reaching the harbour.

Here we were served a light breakfast before embarking on another 1.5 hour speedboat trip. I’ve been sailing my whole life and I’m used to being at sea, however there were a lot of people on the speedboat that felt sick.

However once you arrive at the first Similan Island you will forget about the last three rocky hours. The water is such a bright turquoise that you can’t help but marvel at its beauty.

The clear turquoise water of the Similan Islands, Thailand

The clear turquoise water of the Similan Islands, Thailand

We visited three different islands and spent most of our time snorkelling in the clear water, we even spotted turtles!

The first island stop was a purely snorkelling stop, a little bit far from the beach. At the second island we all disembarked on the beach and had a lovely rice and seafood lunch, served directly on the beach.

The final stop was at the main beach of Koh Similan, the biggest island of the archipelago. This is the beach you always see pictures of taken from the viewpoint overlooking it.

Even on a rainy day when the colours aren’t as bright, it was amongst the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. If you’re visiting during the dry season, be prepared for it to be very busy.

We then got back on our boat and thus began our journey home, which ended up lasting forever. The waves were bigger so our speedboat was much slower, it took us at least 2 hours to get back to Khao Lak.

The drive back to Phuket was also never-ending. It was raining really heavily and the traffic was slow, meaning we didn’t get back to our hotel till around midnight.

This doesn’t obviously happen every day, however if you’re travelling to Thailand during the rainy season, it’s worth bearing in mind.

Is it worth doing a day trip to the Similan Islands?

Yes and no. I found the Similan Islands absolutely beautiful, but if I were to go back, I wouldn’t visit them on a day trip from Phuket.

The early morning start and the journey back that went on until midnight were just too much for me. If I were to go back I would do one of the following options.

Do a day trip from Khao Lak – On my second trip to Thailand I spent a night in Khao Lak and loved it. The town is much smaller and has a more relaxed vibe than Phuket.

The beach isn’t beautiful but from here you can go on a day trip to the Similan Islands, and cut out the long driving times to and from Phuket.

Do an overnight liveaboard trip – There are also a few companies that offer overnight trips to the Similan Islands.

You’re not allowed to sleep on the islands since they’re a protect national park, however you can sleep on a boat anchored off the shore.

These are pricier than doing a day trip, but you will live a much more magical experience! Imagine waking up in the morning to the sound of the waves and looking out of your window over the turquoise sea.

You will also able to appreciate the beauty of the Similan Islands all to yourself for a few hours before the crowds of tourists arrive.

Visit the Surin Islands instead – On my second trip to Thailand I visited the Surin Islands instead, and enjoyed them much better. These beautiful islands aren’t far from the Similan Islands, and offer a similar experience.

You can also camp on the beach in the Surin Islands, so if you want a longer experience but don’t feel like sleeping on a boat, it’s a great alternative. The Surin Islands are also still under the main tourist radar, and not as busy.

Besides the Similan and Surin Islands, there are towns of other beautiful island beach destinations in Thailand. Some of my favourite include Railay Beach , Koh Lipe , Phi Phi (and not only because of Maya Bay ) and the 4 Islands in Krabi .

However all these options involve spending more than one night away from Phuket. If you don’t have long in Thailand, then a day trip to the Similan Islands is the easiest option.

You have to decide for yourself whether pristine white sand beaches, clear turquoise water and rich marine wildlife are worth 6+ hours of travel time in one day.

Where to stay for a Similan Islands day trip

I’ve listed below a couple accommodation options for every budget in both Phuket and Khao Lak, as these are the main spots from which you would usually start your Similan Islands day trip.

Budget – Phuket is one of the biggest backpacker destinations in Thailand. You will find lots of hostels for all moods. I’ve heard good things about Bodega Phuket Party Hostel if you’re in a party mood, and BearPacker Patong Hostel , if you’re looking for something more relaxed.

Mid-range: The Crib Patong – On my second trip to Phuket I stayed at the Crib Patong. This lovely hotel is located just minutes away from Bangla Road, the main road in Patong. It’s far enough that you don’t get all the noise but close enough that you can just walk over if you fancy joining the party.

Luxury: Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa, Karon Beach – On my first stay in Phuket I stayed at the Hilton in Karon Beach. Located right on the beach and away from the chaos of Patong, it’s the perfect place if you’re looking for a fancy stay.

Budget: Chating Guesthouse – We stayed at this guesthouse is located just minutes away from the beach. It’s not particularly fancy but has spacious rooms, lovely balconies and is good value for money.

Mid-range: Baan Krating Khao Lak Resort – This lovely resort has a pool and balconies that overlook the beach. What more do you need?

Luxury: Eden Beach Khao Lak Resort & Spa – If you’re looking for a bit of luxury, this is the place. Located right on the beach and with a beautiful pool, it’s the perfect spot to relax before or after your Similan Islanda day trip.

What to pack for a day trip to Similan Islands

I have a whole article about what to pack for Thailand if you want a full item-by-item breakdown about what to put in your suitcase.

I wanted to keep this guide brief so I’ve listed below a couple essentials you would need specifically for the Similan Islands.

A waterproof bag – The waves can get pretty big during the boat journey and it’s not uncommon for splashes to come overboard, make sure your essentials are safe and dry in a waterproof bag!

A GoPro or similar underwater camera – You are about to snorkel in one of the most beautiful seas in the world, don’t forget to capture it!

Seasickness tablets – Hopefully you don’t need these, but better safe than sorry!

A fast drying towel – Bring something to dry yourself with and that you can use to lie on the beach. I love these because they don’t take up much space and dry quickly.

Final thoughts on doing a Similan Islands day trip from Phuket

If you’re looking for a beautiful island escape then look no further, the Similan Islands can give you just that. However be aware that visiting the Similan Islands on a day trip can be pretty intense.

I suggest you plan a longer Thailand itinerary, spending a few days in Bangkok , then travelling over to the islands and being ready to travel them slowly, without rushing.

I hope this guide has helped you figure out whether a Similan Islands day trip is for you or not, and what alternatives you have to experience these stunning islands.
