Replacing Your RV Shower Faucet: Step by Step

Most RV owners don’t have the slightest idea of how to replace the RV faucet. You may have recently installed a new shower head, caddie, and hose, but the shower faucet also needs replacement every once in a while.

My shower faucet was working just fine but quite frankly I didn’t like the way its dingy off-white color looked next to my new shower head and hose. Replacing your shower faucet should take you less than thirty minutes and the cost is less than 30 dollars. Below is a step-by-step tutorial on how to replace your RV shower faucet.

Step 1: Drain all the water

Before you start replacing your RV shower faucet, the first thing you need to do is turn off your water pump. This might seem like an obvious thing to do, but most people simply forget to carry out this simple step.

You then need to drain all the water from the system, and this is achieved by turning on the cold and hot water in the shower. Replacing your RV shower faucet can prove to be tedious when you don’t drain all the water from the system.

Step 2: Remove the mounting plate and faucet

The mounting plate and shower faucet are usually screwed in, and it won’t take you a lot of time to remove them. Use a screwdriver and be very careful to ensure you do not cause any damages to your water system. Once you remove the mounting plate and faucet, you get access to your RV’s water lines.

There is a removable panel located behind the shower in many RV’s to make it easier for you to access the plumbing. If this isn’t the case for your RV, then you will have to go to the basement storage area to access the plumbing.

To separate the water lines from the faucets, you will need a wrench. The most important thing is to keep track of the cold and hotline. You may not be a plumber but this is a straightforward job that you can easily do by yourself.

If you enjoy camping and traveling in your RV, there are not many things that are more relaxing and therapeutic like a long and hot shower with just the right pressure. However, it’s important that you install the right shower faucet in your RV if you want to enjoy yourself while taking a shower. 

So what are your best options? In this article, we’ll review some of the best RV shower faucets you can buy right now. Beyond that, we’ll tell you how to fix, repair or replace your RV shower faucet.

What is an RV shower faucet?

Unlike a regular home showerhead, an RV shower faucet is designed to conserve water. This is because water is usually limited in your RV tank, especially when you’re dry camping. How To Fix a Leaky RV Shower Faucet

The good news is, you can easily repair a leaky RV shower faucet. However, you have to first diagnose the cause of the problem; an RV shower faucet usually leaks from the hose, valve, or head. 

Let’s have a look at how you could fix different parts of a leaky RV shower faucet.

If the source of the leak is the shower hose, this is what you should do:

Step 1: Turn off the water supply and dry off any dripping water using a towel.

Step 2: Disconnect the leaky hose from the showerhead and faucet.

Step 3: Loosen the sleeve at the edge of the shower hose and pull it down.

Step 4: Remove the threaded tube and pull out the flex tube inside the shower hose. You could use your hands or pliers to pull it out, but be careful you don’t damage it.

Step 5: Inspect the flex tube inside the shower hose for any signs of cracks or tears that are causing the leakage.

Step 6: Cut out the leaky part of the flex tube inside the shower hose if it’s close to the edge. Alternatively, if there is a small hole close to the center of the flex tube, you could use a waterproof plumber’s tape to cover it.

Step 7: Slide back the threaded tube back into the flex tube and press the hose barb. You could use a crescent wrench to re-adjust the hose barb.

Step 8: Return the flex tube back into the shower hose. However, be careful you don’t twist the flex tube if you’re using pliers.

Step 9: Tighten the sleeve back into the shower hose using your hands or a crescent wrench.

Step 10: Replace the rubber washers on the end threads of your shower hose.

Step 11: Reconnect the shower hose to the faucet and showerhead.

Note: If you’ve tried the steps above and you still have a leak on your shower hose, you need to replace it.

If the source of the water leak is your shower head, we recommend the following steps:

Step 1: Turn off the shower faucet handle so water doesn’t flow into the showerhead.

Step 2. Disconnect the showerhead from the hose or arm. You could use your hands or pliers to disconnect the showerhead but be extra careful you don’t damage it.

Step 3 . Detach the showerhead faceplate and inspect the inner parts for any signs of damage or blockage.

Step 4. If the inner part of the showerhead is clogged or dirty, put it in a bowl of white vinegar for at least 8 hours. This will help to remove any residue on your shower head.

Step 5 . If you still see mineral deposits on the inner parts of your shower head, you can manually remove them with a small scrub brush.

Step 6. Rinse the inner parts of your shower head with cold water.

Step 7. If you notice any of the inner parts such as the screen and rubber O-rings are worn out, you need to replace them.

Step 8. Reassemble and reinstall the showerhead.

Step 9. Turn on the RV shower faucet and switch it off after a few minutes.

Step 10. Re-inspect the showerhead for any signs of leakage. If the showerhead is still dribbling water despite pressing the pause/stop button, you need to consider replacing it. However, if the source of the leak is the vacuum breaker attached to the showerhead, you need to replace it.

Note: After you’ve tried the above repair fixes and you still notice dribbling on your shower head when the faucet is turned off, it means there could be a problem with your RV faucet cartridge.

If you notice a water leak coming out of your RV shower faucet, we recommend the following steps.

Step 1 . Turn off your RV main water supply and switch off the water pump.

Step 2. Open all the taps in your RV and flush the toilet to drain any water in the plumbing system.

Step 3. Unscrew both the hot and cold shower faucet handles using a wrench, screwdriver, or utility knife.

Step 4. Carefully unscrew the mounting plate and faucet off your bathroom wall.

Step 5. Inspect the shower faucet for any signs of wear and tear.

Step 6. Replace any worn-out parts on such as the rubber washers, cartridge, gaskets, or valve stem if necessary. Make sure you tighten any parts you’ve replaced so they don’t leak.

Step 7. Re-install the faucet, mounting plate, and faucet on your RV bathroom.

Step 8. Turn on the water supply and inspect your shower faucet for any signs of leakage.

Note: If the RV shower faucet is worn out beyond repair, you should consider replacing it.

The Unspoken Rules of Showering in an RV

The first unspoken rule of showering in an RV is to understand the water systems in your unit. This determines how much hot water you have available for showering — or water of any temperature, for that matter.

Here are some specific examples of water system specs  and how they might impact your showers:

• Fresh Water Tank Capacity determines the available water for showers, dishes, drinking, and other uses when dry camping.
• Water Heater Tank Capacity impacts available hot water and the length of showers in RVs with tank-style gas/electric water heaters.
• Water Heater Type (i.e., tank-style versus tankless) impacts the amount of hot water available and how long you’ll need to wait for water to be heated after turning on the heater and before showering. 
• Gray Water Tank Capacity determines how much water you can use for showers, dishes, flushes, and other uses before dumping your camper tanks .

Rule #2: Plan Shower Times

Families will benefit from strategizing shower times. It can alleviate certain members suffering cold showers. 

A 6-gallon tank-style water heater will run out of hot water in roughly 5-10 minutes. So, the more people you camp with, the more you need to space out your showers. The recovery time for a tank-style water heater is typically 30-45 minutes before the tank is refilled and reheated. 

Solo travelers won’t have an issue, but couples need to space their showers out to enjoy their desired amount of hot water. For a family of four, it may be beneficial for two people to take morning showers so the other two can comfortably shower in the evening. As your camping party grows, the need to plan and space out shower times increases. 

Of course, if your RV has a tankless water heater, you’ll need less time between showers. However, due to the additional limitations mentioned in Rule #1, you may still need to plan ahead.

Rule #3: Practice Moisture Control

Humidity can make your RV uncomfortable and increase mold and mildew growth. This can lead to significant health concerns and expensive RV damage. That’s why controlling moisture and RV condensation is so important in general. 

 Our third rule is to open your bathroom roof vent and turn on the fan (if equipped) before showering to help control excess moisture. This keeps steam from accumulating inside your RV and raising the relative humidity level. It’s also good practice to avoid a foggy RV bathroom mirror so you can use it to finish getting ready after your shower. 

Rule #4: Minimize Water Usage

Our fourth rule is to limit your shower duration. As mentioned earlier, you’re likely only going to have 5-10 minutes of hot water with a gas/electric water heater, depending on the heater’s tank size. But you can extend the length of your showers by minimizing water usage. Here’s a recommended technique: 

• Turn on both hot and cold faucets and adjust to your desired temperature. 
• Use the shutoff valve on the showerhead to turn the water off. 
• Hop in the shower, turn off the shutoff valve, and rinse. 
• Turn on the shutoff valve while soaping/shampooing. 
• Turn off the shutoff valve again to rinse. 

Use this technique multiple times in a single shower for shampoo, body wash, face soap, and any other aspects of your shower routine. Depending on the showerhead you’re using, you may also use a different setting to reduce water consumption. Explore showerheads if you’re interested in upgrading.

Rule #5: Do a Post-Shower Clean

Every time you shower, take the final 30 seconds to rinse the shower surround and basin. Even better? Keep a sponge in your RV shower to quickly scrub off soap residue left behind from your shower. It only takes a few seconds, and it makes your seasonal cleaning procedure much easier.

What Are the Different Types of RV Showers?

In addition to those unspoken rules, let’s address a few more important considerations about RV showers. 

Dry vs Wet Bath

If an RV has a shower, it’s typically in either a wet bath or a dry bath. 

A dry bath is where the shower basin and surround are separate from the toilet and sink or vanity. 

Here’s a floorplan image from the Coleman Lantern LT 17R as an example: 

While not all RVs have a sink and vanity in the bathroom, this fundamental design is true of all dry baths: The toilet and shower are separate, and the toilet stays dry. Of course, a dry bath takes up more space in the RV’s floorplan, potentially limiting space for other living, dining, or sleeping areas. 

A wet bath is where the shower basin, toilet, sink, and vanity share a space. Here’s an example from the Winnebago Travato 59G floorplan: 

The primary benefit of the wet bath is space savings. That’s why you’ll often find it on smaller teardrop campers and Class B camper vans. To make the space more functional, many wet baths include features like a flip-down sink and an enclosed holder to keep your RV toilet paper dry. 

Some manufacturers have gotten creative with a swiveling divider that makes the wet bath adaptable for its different uses while still taking up the same footprint, such as in the Winnebago EKKO .

Indoor vs Outdoor Shower

Many RVs actually have two showers. However, the outdoor shower typically has a much different use than the one inside. It’s great for cleaning outdoor gear, rinsing after swimming, or washing feet (yours or your furry companions). Only in Class B RVs is it more common to see outdoor showers as the sole, primary shower. 

On many towable RVs, the outdoor shower is located in a small exterior compartment. It comprises hot and cold faucets and a showerhead on a relatively short hose. The lack of a showerhead holder for hands-free use is one reason why more RVers likely don’t use their outdoor showers to get clean—that and the lack of privacy in most RV parks .

Alternative RV Shower Storage Ideas

We know some RVers that would rather use campground shower facilities. The benefit? It frees up their RV shower for additional storage. If you’re interested in an alternative use for this space in your camper, here are a few RV shower storage ideas: 

• Shelf Storage. Many RVs with wet baths come with removable shelves for converting the shower into additional storage.
• Hanging Storage. Remove the shower curtain and use the rod to hang extra clothes, pocket organizers, or anything else that doesn’t have a home elsewhere. You can also use an expanding curtain rod to hang items more centrally in the shower.
• Large Gear Storage. No place in your RV for golf clubs, coolers, or other larger gear? Use the shower—at least to transport them to your next destination.

Recommended Camper Shower Accessories

You can make your RV showers more comfortable and enjoyable with the right accessories. Add these camper shower accessories to your RV: 

• Soap Dispenser . I can’t tell you how many times I’ve forgotten to put a bar or bottle of soap away before moving my RV, leading to spills and wasted time cleaning up. Eliminate that potential with a secured dispenser.
• Pocket Organizer . Cabinet space is limited in most RV bathrooms. Store the essentials you use most often in a hanging organizer on the inside or outside of your shower curtain.
• Towel Rack . Towels don’t stay on hooks in an RV as well as they do at home. Keep your towels from ending up on the dirty floor while you’re traveling. 
• Shower Curtain and Bath Mat . Keep water in the shower basin and off the floor while adding a decorative personal touch to your RV bathroom.

ShowerMiser RV Water Saving System (Install and Use Guide)

When you are camping it is always a priority to save water. You have a limited supply when boondocking so every drop counts. When connected to city water, you want to keep your gray water tank from filling up too soon. There is a good device to help prevent that situation and save water.

The ShowerMiser is designed to recycle unused fresh cold water. This device works in a way that extends the capacities of both your gray and fresh water tanks. Instead of letting good clean cold water drain to the gray water tank, it sends it back to the fresh water holding tank.

The Aquaview ShowerMiser Water-Saving System

This water-saving system is exactly as it is labeled. After installation, all you have to do to save water is flip a level. That simple action diverts the cold water that would normally run down the drain and into the gray water tank, back into your fresh water supply.

This little action preserves your fresh water and makes it last longer. Plus, it stops your gray water tank from filling up too fast. It is a simple but ingenious way to help RV owners save money by not using all their water too quickly.

In addition to this water-saving technique, this device will work on both tank and tankless water heaters. You can save no matter which system you have heating your water.

How Does ShowerMiser Work?

This is not a complicated system. Once installed, there is only one moving part you have to be concerned about. You do not have to disconnect from your outside water supply to use this device.

All you have to do is turn the little lever to the proper position and the lever closes the valve opening to the shower head. At the same time, it opens the valve to the fresh water tank, thereby redirecting the cold water back into the fresh water tank.

This little action keeps the water that would normally run into your shower drain in your system. Plus, you do not have to worry about the quality of the water as it is untouched by anything. The water remains in the water line and the fresh water tank so it won’t be corrupted by dirt, soap, etc.

It is that simple and it seems to make many RV owners very happy as they do not have to empty their gray water tank as often nor fill up their fresh water tank as frequently. It may be one upgrade that is worth the money to buy.

How do You use a ShowerMiser?

After you have installed the Showermiser, all you have to do is flip the lever and wait for the color change. The company that designed this little and unique device uses color-changing technology to let you know when the hot water has arrived.

Once you see that color change, all you have to do is flip the lever back into the position that closes the fresh water valve and opens the shower head valve. There is one trick to using this device.

You do need a return water line to either the non-pressurized side of the water pump or one that goes directly back into the fresh water tank. Other instructions are:

- Do not disconnect your outside water source.

- Check your control panel to see how much fresh water you have in your water tank.

- Turn the SHOWERMI$ER lever/valve to bypass the shower head.

- Turn the cold water shower valve to full pressure.

- Keep an eye on the water control panel.

- When it shows full, turn off the shower valve. (source )

How do You Install a Shower Miser?

The best place to go for installation instructions is the website for the Showermiser. That website is already linked to in the previous section in the word 'source'. Here are the instructions they provide for easy installation:

“ SHOWERMI$ER connects anywhere on the non-pressurized side of the fresh water system, (for example, the fresh water tank or the input side of the water pump).

- Simply remove the shower head and attach the SHOWERMI$ER unit.

- Line up and mark where the return line will be.

- Drill a single hole (using a hole saw) in the shower wall through to the inside wall where the other plumbing is maintained.

- Using the provided lock nut and washer, tighten the SHOWERMI$ER snugly against the wall.

- Using a return line with a 1/2″ female pipe thread fitting, attach the return line to the SHOWERMI$ER unit.

- Lastly, connect the other side of the return line to anywhere it is convenient on the non-pressurized side of the fresh water system. It is easy!”

Again, these instructions should work for those RVs that have tankless water heaters installed. By upgrading to a tankless water heater you are not cut off from using these devices and upgrade your shower experience as well as save fresh water.

Shower Miser RV Instructions

There are not that many instructions to give. The most important one is to make sure you install the Showermiser in the correct position so you always know which way to turn the lever to shut off or turn on the water supply.

The second most important instruction would be to learn the different colors that show up for the different water temperatures. The cold water supply will have the pipe look dark blue.

When there is just hot water, the tube or device will turn gray. But when the hot water arrives at the lever point, you should see a mixture of dark blue and gray. The website linked to above has an excellent color image showing you these colors and what they will look like.

When you see, the mixture of dark blue and gray, then the water is ready for your shower. This is a very simple system to use and learn.

The following image comes from the Showermiser website but we do not think it is the best diagram you can use. This diagram shows all the important parts and it has corresponding numbers but no legend telling you what those numbers mean:

To give you a better idea of what the system looks like once installed, we did find some good images on the internet. Here is one of those images. It provides a before and after look so you can see if you did the installation correctly or not.

Then since we do not feel the black and white diagram is as good as it should be, here is a color version to give you a better idea of how this system works:

There is no manual available to download. This is not a very complicated device filled with electronics. There are no wiring diagrams because it does not use electricity.

All the instructions for use and installation should be in the package when you buy it at your RV parts and accessory outlets. Instead, we can give you warranty information which may come in handy as well as a link to the company’s FAQ web page so you can have most of your questions answered.

This device seems to be the next best thing to sliced bread. It is low-tech, simple to use, and easy to install. You cannot ask for anything better when you want to save water.

According to the many owners that have this device installed, it works well when installed correctly. The only complicated part of this device is knowing which direction to turn the lever and what color to watch out for.
