Nohkalikai Falls is the tallest waterfall in India (340 metres). This waterfall 7km far from Cherrapunji town. Nohkalikai Falls are fed by the rainwater collected on the peak of a comparatively small plateau and decrease in power during the dry season in December – February.

Nohkalikai Falls is one of the best places to visit in Shillong. It is a spectacular cascade that plunges an estimated 340 meters from a lushly forested plateau down to a rocky green or often turquoise-colored pool below. One word to describe is breathtaking.

Popularly known as Barapani, this refreshing site is a place where you can be at peace with nature or enjoy a variety of water sports such as sailing, water skiing, fishing, cruising, kayaking, and water scooter rides. The place is surrounded by dense coniferous forests on one side and the East Khasi Hills on the other and offers enchanting views, making it the best iconic place for landscape artists and photographers.

This huge manmade lake has some small islands and great picnic spots and also houses a dam built on the Umiam River that is worth visiting despite the curvy congested road leading to it. The Lum Nehru Park in the vicinity is quite popular amongst locals as well as tourists. Be it students, casual holiday seekers, nature lovers, botanists, or adventure seekers, there is something for everyone here. So if you are planning a trip to Shillong do plan a day trip to this getaway. There is an interesting story behind the name Umiam, which means water of tears in the Khasi language. 4. Sohpetbneng Peak

Sohpetbneng Peak situated on the outskirts of the city is one of the other must places to visit in Shillong owing to its divine aura and peaceful nature. 5. Don Bosco Museum

Don Bosco Museum is the place to visit if you are a history buff. It consists of a seven-storey building with seventeen galleries for viewers to enjoy and covers the cultural heritage of nearly the whole of North East India. One of the not-so-famous but enchanting places to see in Shillong, Laitlum Canyons is just a 45-minute drive away from the city. This tourist spot is perched atop the East Khasi Hills and is surrounded by thick lush green forests and majestic mountain peaks, and one can spend hours here enjoying its solitude and surrounding beauty.

7. Ward’s Lake

8. Mary Help for Christian Cathedral

There are several churches worth visiting in Shillong but the Mary Help for Christian Cathedral is a must-visit. Founded in the year 1936, this church is a prominent religious place in Shillong and quite famous for its unique and striking architecture. Being an example of Gothic Revival Architecture, it is a great example for the patrons of architecture. Situated on top of a hill this holy building gives a feeling of serenity and spirituality. The high arches and stained glass windows, artwork showcasing scenes from the Holy Scriptures, the white marble building enhance the overall appearance of the church. The statue of Mother Mary looks elegant and grand even today after so many years of it being built. As you enter the cathedral you can see beautiful terracotta stations of the cross that depicts the life events of Holy Jesus.

This is said to be the cathedral of the Roman Archdiocese of Shillong and is the main praying hall of the Christians of East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi. The church is so designed that it can absorb the shock waves from earthquake tremors. Being in the centre of the city, it’s brimmed with devotees on Sundays. 9. Cherrapunjee

A must place to visit is Cherrapunjee, which is situated at two hours’ distance from Shillong and is 1,300 metres above sea level. Famed for having the heaviest rainfall in the world, this is the wettest place on Earth. Also known as Sohra there are several roaring waterfalls, including the famous Nohsngithiang Falls here, and is a very popular holiday destination. There are plenty of reasons for visiting this marvellous gem of nature.

 The natural beauty of the area, the scene of the rivers that fall from mountains in thunderous waterfalls, the towns famous limestone caves, the thriving flora and fauna, the oranges, the natural honey as well as it being a headquarter of the Syiem of Sohra and a Centre of the Khasi Culture and Literature. With climatic changes, Cherrapunjee has lost its wet slot but even today it’s still stunning with the swirling clouds, misty valley, foaming rivers, cascading waterfalls, and scenic route. Best Shillong Tourist Places To Add To Your Bucketlist

A state that was formed by carving out two districts of the state of Assam on 21st of January 1972, Meghalaya is formed of two districts – a. the United Khasi and Jaintia Hills and b. the Garo hills. Bordered in the the south by the districts of Mymensingh and Slyhet of Bangladesh, west by Rangpur in Bangladesh and east by the state of Assam of which it is born, its capital is Shillong which was nicknamed as the “Scotland of the East” by the British. And the state’s official language is English!!

Yes!! You read that right!

Since there are ample of sights and places to visit, it is impossible to cover all the places at one go so in this article we will focus on places to visit in and around Shillong and trust me even that’s a lot to cover!

How to Reach?

There are various means to reach Shillong.

Direct flight to Shillong Airport which is 31 kms from Police Bazaar which is the centre of the city.

CCU (Kolkata) -> SHL (roundtrip) = INR 9,440 (dependent of the dates)

There is no direct train to Shillong so you have to reach Guwahati by train and take a private or shared cab. Guwahati Railway Station is around 3 hrs from the city centre.

• Saraighat Express (12345): Runs all days - Starts from Howrah Station

• Kanchanjunga (13175): Runs on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday - Starts from Sealdah Station

• Kamrup Express (15959): Runs of Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday - Starts from Howrah Station

Best Time to Visit:

You can go there anytime, except the monsoons! The best time, however is from September to April.

Elephant Falls

One of the most popular waterfalls in the Northeast that I around 8 km from the city centre. This waterfall is located on Elephant Falls road that diverges from Mawsynram-Shillong Rd.

Shillong Peak

Located at a distance of 10 km from the city centre and at a height of 6449 ft above sea level, this peak offers an uninterrupted panoramic view of the entire city, the Himalayas (on a clear day), its waterfalls and also the lower Gangetic plains of Bangladesh.

Police Bazaar

This is literally the heart of Shillong that is the major market and a popular shopping destination. In fact all the pubs, restaurants, shops and even the private taxi stand is there. Quite a lot of street food like fried pork and noodles are sold in the evening.

Lailum Canyons

Laitlum canyon.

Literally meaning “The End of Hills” or “The End of The World”, nestled in the lap of the magnificent hills and valleys, this place provides a verdant panorama of Meghalaya.

Don Bosco Museum

A gallery that houses indigenous art in separate sections like weapons, agriculture, religion, language etc and a place to visit if you are interested to know the culture of Meghalaya.

Sweet Falls

The sound of the gurgling water, the lush green cover and the chirping of the birds around is what best describes Sweet Falls, which is one of the steepest falls in the country and just 5 km from the city centre.

Spread Eagle Falls

Considered to be the widest waterfall in all of Shillong and located in the East Khasi district, this water gushes down from all three sides and filling the pool at the bottom.

Rhino Heritage Museum

A place that attracts historians, students and tourists alike. Built in 1928 and located 4 km away, Bara Bazaar is dedicated to army men, military weapon, including combat missiles.

Ward’s Lake

Also known as Pollock’s Lake (Nan Polok), Ward’s Lake is hardly 2 kms from city centre. Surrounded with cobble-stone path and flower beds, this is a popular tourist attraction that is believed to be a century old.

Malki Forest

Locally known as Khlaw Malki, this forest is popular both among the locals and tourists for hiking and exploring the flora and fauna.

Crinoline Falls

Also known as the Blue Heaven, this stunning cascade is just 2 km from the city centre and close to Lady Hydari Park.

Ever Living Museum

Established in 2015, Ever Living Museum is a private museum owned and maintained by retired Maghalaya government engineer Kyntiewbor War and is located in the Mawshbuit area of Shillong. This museum is a testament of one’s sheer love for nature, culture, tradition and history. The museum houses handicrafts of various types like miniature fish traps and filters made of bamboo, miniature tree huts that are synonymous with Garo and Khasi tribe, also ancient dresses and jewellery.

Entry Timing: 11 am to 5 pm (Closed of Good Friday, Easter and Christmas)

Places to Visit Around Shillong

Locally known as Dam sait, that was created by damming the Umiam River in the 1960s and a place you can stop by on the way to Shillong from Guwahati. Although a dam, it is popular among tourists because of water sports and adventure sports like kayaking, water cycling, scooting and boating.

Mawlynnong - Asia's Cleanest Village

Chosen by Discover India magazine as the cleanest village of Asia, this hamlet in the East Khasi Hills is 90 km from Shillong. Banning plastic use and smoking, encouraging rainwater harvesting, ensuring waste is collected in dustbins made with bamboo – this tiny hamlet is promoting sustainable means on living promoting eco-tourism.

David Scott Trail

A part of the 100-km trade route that is located at an elevation of 4,892 ft spans over 16 kms meandering through mountains, rivers and valleys. This is one of the oldest treks in Meghalaya that passes through lush green meadows, Khasi villages, rolling mountains, ancient sacred groves, natural pools and stone bridges.

Around 2.5 hrs from Shillong there is one of the most stunning waterfalls of Meghalaya called Od / Ot Ringtai waterfalls. You have to reach Nongna by car and from there you have to hike.

Kyllang Rock

Located 59 kms from Shillong Lum Kyllang is a geological marvel that is a natural monolith right amidst the pine forests of West Khasi Hills. A path encourages you to take a hike and head to the top of the rock from where you can experience the breathtaking sunrise and sunset.

Living Root Bridge

A suspension bridge hand-made by the Khasi and Jaintia tribes of the aerial roots of rubber fig trees. How it was constructed was by guiding the pliable roots of the rubber figs across a stream, then allowing the growth of the roots to strengthen over time until they were sturdy enough to hold the weight of a human being. Mount Sohpetbneng

This is the holy pilgrimage site of “Hynniewtrep” people that is referred as the “Navel of Heaven” according to the Khasi folklore, which is located 27 kms from Shillong.

Dawki River

Right beside the Bangladesh border, and also known as “Wah Umngot” when it flows in the Mawlynnong village, this is one of the cleanest rivers in India due to sustainable tourism. It is so transparent that you can even see the rocks on the riverbed!!

Mawjymbuin Cave

Among the many stunning stalagmite caves, this one is located in Mawsynram which is 62 kms from Shillong. The cave is known for housing a naturally formed “shivlinga”, which is similar to the one in Amarnath and is frequented by people across the country.

Mawphlang Sacred Grove

Home to the sacred groves of Meghalaya, this is the soul of Khasi culture. No one is allowed to take away even a pebble or a twig from the hallowed forests. A serene holy place of the Khasis, you should be respectful to their culture.

Nohsngithiang Falls

Also known as the “Seven Sisters Waterfalls” is a seven segmented waterfall located 60 km away from Shillong. The best vista of this waterfall is brought out during the rains when it flows with all its might from all the seven segments.

Nohkalikai Falls

The list of waterfalls in Meghalaya would remain incomplete without the mention of Nohkalikai Falls in Cherrapunji which is the tallest plunge waterfall in India. Located 7 kms from Cherrapunji, this waterfall is about 340 metres in height and is a sight to behold as it cascades to meet its pristine blue pool at the bottom due to its erosional force. A must-visit for all tourists and it gets even better as you hike down to the bottom for an exciting experience.

Jakrem Hot Spring

Around 64 kms away from Shillong, on the Shillong-Mawkyrwat road this is a well-known sulphur hot spring, among the several that are there in Shillong.

Diengiei Peak

200 feet lower than Shillong Peak at an elevation of 6,200 ft, this peak that is situated in Ri Bhoi district towards western Shillong is the second highest peak in Shillong that offers stunning view of the plains.

It is advisable to explore the local restaurants and try the local food (Khasi food) instead of the usual fine-dine restaurants.

The Must-visit Tourist Places in Shillong

1. elephant falls.

Located at a distance of 12 km from the city center, Elephant falls is one of the prominent waterfalls in Shillong.

It was referred to as ‘Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew’ by the local Khasi people, meaning three steps waterfall.

The first falls is quite broad and surrounded by dense trees. The second one flows down like a narrow stream and becomes almost invisible during drier months.

The third falls is the most spectacular and accessible to visitors.

With the crystal clear water gushing over the dark rocks and verdant surrounding in the backdrop, this place looks absolutely marvellous.

Britishers named it Elephant falls during their regime owing to the presence of a rock here that resembled an elephant. The rock got destroyed later in an earthquake.

Elephant falls is a popular stopover on the way to Cherrapunji from Shillong. You need to walk down through a narrow staircase with almost 150 steps to reach the plunge pool.

This tourist attraction is open on all days from 10 am to 6 pm. There is an entry fee of Rs 30 per head for the visitors.

2. Ward’s Lake

Located right in the heart of Shillong city, Ward’s lake is purely an artificial water body teeming with bountiful greenery all around.

The lake is named in honour of Sir William Ward, the erstwhile Chief Commissioner of Assam who started the construction of this lake.

Take a walk around the horse-shoe shaped lake to enjoy the mesmerising beauty of the lake and colourful flower beds in the garden. A wooden bridge in the middle of the lake adds to the scenic beauty of this place.

Another prime attraction of the park is paddle boating in the lake. In case you want to get clicked in the traditional Khasi attire, there is a shop beside the lake providing it on rent.

You can also feed the fishes in the lake and watch anglers sitting with their fishing rods waiting to catch fish.

Angling requires prior permission and some kind of license from the park authorities and is not permitted for normal visitors.

3. Shillong Peak

Perched at an altitude of 1965 meters, Shillong Peak is among the prime tourist places in Shillong.

It is the highest point of Shillong and offers a panoramic bird’s eye view of Shillong city and the Bangladesh plains on a cloudless day.

Trek up to the peak, enjoy the breathtaking views of the rolling hills and soak in the stunning vistas of the surroundings.

There is a sacred site on top of the peak known as U Shulong and it is said that the city of Shillong gets its name from Shillong peak.

Entry to the peak is through Airforce Base which has strict security checking. You need to submit identity proof before moving further to the peak.

It is open for tourists on all days from 9 am to 5 pm and there is no entry fee.

4. Umiam Lake

Surrounded by lush green Khasi hills , Umiam lake is a man-made reservoir formed after a dam was built on the lake for hydroelectricity generation. 

The picturesque lake is located 15 km north of Shillong and is also known as Barapani lake among the locals. The mesmerising views of sunrise and sunset at the lake are a treat to your eyes.

Boating is one of the most popular activities in this serene lake. Adventure seekers can enjoy water sports like kayaking and water skiing.

5. Bishop Falls

Cascading down from the emerald green Khasi hills, Bishop falls is the highest waterfall in Shillong and 22nd highest waterfall in India.  

Bishop falls along with Beadon falls are referred to as twin brothers as they plunge into the same deep gorge of the Umiam river.

It is accessible through a narrow road at Mawlai and you can get breathtaking views of the twin falls together.

6. Lady Hydari Park

Located right in the heart of the city, Lady Hydari Park is named after the nature-loving first lady of the state and wife of the erstwhile Governor of Assam, Lady Hydari.

There is a paved walkway to take a stroll around the park and admire the dazzling beauty of this colourful garden. It is open from 9 am to 5:30 pm on all days except Mondays.

7. Don Bosco Museum

Hailed as the largest museum of Indigenous Cultures in Asia, Don Bosco Museum gives a glimpse of the rich cultural heritage of North East India.

Standing tall at 7 storeys, the museum has many galleries housing beautiful artifacts, paintings and figurines to depict the diverse native culture of all the north-eastern states.

A very well-managed museum with staff on every floor to guide the visitors, it is one of the major tourist places in Shillong.

An additional attraction is an excellently built skywalk from where you can get a panoramic view of Shillong city.

The museum is open from 9 am to 5:30 pm on all days except for Sundays and public holidays. During the peak winter season (1st Dec – 31st Jan) it closes at 4:30 pm.

Entry fee – Adult (Indian): Rs 100, Adult (Foreigner): Rs 200, Student: Rs 50

8. Air Force Museum

Located in the upper Shillong area, the Air Force museum showcases a great collection of miniature models of aircraft, missiles, rockets and other exhibits related to the Defence Forces.

It is an amazing place to visit for those interested to know about the armed forces. You can also buy some souvenirs from the gift shop inside the museum.

It is open on all days except for public holidays and no entry fee is charged.

9. Laitlum Canyons

One of the most offbeat tourist places in Shillong, Laitlum Canyons is just an hour’s drive away from Shillong bus stand.

Laitlum literally translates to ‘end of hills’ and true to its name it offers spectacular views of the rolling green hills and scenic valleys.

A perfect place for those seeking solace and solitude in nature’s lap, Laitlum Canyons is irresistible with its unspoiled natural beauty and panoramic vistas of the surroundings.

You will feel a sudden drop in temperature once you approach Laitlum village. It is around 10-minute drive from the village to Laitlum Canyons. There is no entry fee but only a parking fee of Rs 50 per car.

10. Mawphlang Sacred Forest

One of the must-see tourist places in Shillong, Mawphlang Sacred Forest is a nature lover’s delight. 

Sprawling more than 75 hectares of land, the sacred grove comprises a wide variety of flora and some of them are even as old as 1000 years.

You can’t take anything outside this sacred grove, not even a leaf. Resident tribes believe that the forest is protected by the local deity – Labasa.

It is located about 25 km away from Shillong and takes almost an hour to reach here by car.

11. Lumpongdeng Island

Surrounded by emerald green waters of Umiam lake and coniferous trees, this is a small picturesque island known as Lumpongdeng Island.

It is a perfect place to spend some ‘me-time basking in nature. You can book a wooden boathouse by the lakeside for an overnight stay.

Rent out a boat from the Water Sports Complex at Umiam lake to reach the island. Don’t forget to carry drinking water and some eatables with you.

12. David Scott Trail

Named after a British officer, David Scott, it is one of the most popular trekking routes in Shillong.

An adventurous trail of about 16 km, the David Scott Trail stretches from Mawphlang to Ladmawphlang.

You can trek from both sides but a relatively descending route starting from Mawphlang makes it easier to trek. Not a well-marked trail but locals can help out with the directions.

While trekking, enjoy the breathtaking landscape encompassing lush green hills, cascading falls, a vast expanse of forests and quaint bridges connecting the two villages.

How To Reach Shillong

Umroi airport in Shillong is the nearest domestic airport but connects only to Kolkata.

Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport in Guwahati situated at a distance of 118 km from Shillong is the major domestic and international airport. You can hire a private taxi or shared taxi to reach Shillong from the airport.

The nearest railway station to Shillong is in Guwahati which is well connected by a train network to other large cities of India.

Places Near Shillong

Head straight to Cherrapunji after visiting Shillong which is around 2 hours drive from there. It is famous for a host of charming waterfalls like Seven Sisters falls , Nohkalikai falls.

Another place of interest close to Shillong is Jowai located at a distance of 66 km. You can visit the scenic Krang Suri falls in Jowai, an ideal place for those looking for a nature retreat.

• You can visit Shillong during any time of the year as the weather is pleasant throughout the year.
• Remember to check the weather forecast for the day before leaving for sightseeing. If it is too cloudy you may not be able to capture the best shots on your camera.
• Clouds literally play hide and seek there and it may start to rain anytime. Don’t forget to carry an umbrella with you.
• Get some warm clothes in your backpack. It could be sunny during the daytime but the air feels much cooler in the evenings.
• Cold weather can make your skin dry, don’t forget to carry a moisturising lotion.

The beautiful city of Shillong is the capital city of the state of Meghalaya. The amazing city is a beautiful city encircled by pine trees. This place is also popular as the ‘ Scotland of the East ’.

The breathtaking mountain peaks, crystal clear lakes, beautiful golf courses, amazing museums, and the zoo are the major tourist spots to visit Shillong. Except for the natural beauty, it is also the gateway to Meghalaya, the state famous for heavy rainfalls, caving, tallest waterfalls, and beautiful landscapes.

Shillong is famous not only for its natural beauty but also for its people’s culture.  Shillong has been in limelight the for its jovial people and their culture. Umiam lake:.

Umiam Lake is an amazing man-made reservoir. Umiam Lake is situated 15 km away from the north of Shillong which is the capital of Meghalaya. Elephant Falls:

Elephant fall is amongst the famous tourist places in Shillong. Elephant Falls is a famous fall in the North-East. It is nestled close to Shillong. It is a paradise for tourists with three layers of the falls. This fall is named after an Elephant like a stone at its foot. By the local Khasi people, the stunning Elephant falls were referred to as ‘ Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew ‘, which means ‘ The Three Step Waterfalls ‘.  The falls consist of three mesmerizing falls in succession.

Laitlum Canyons:

This tourist destination is amongst the most marvelous tourist and trekking destinations in this region. It is situated on the East Khasi Hills. The canyons are located about 21 km south of Shillong. It means ‘ End of hills ‘. The mesmerizing view of Laitlum Canyons offers the best panoramic views of the whole of Meghalaya attached with the majestic hills and valleys.

Shillong Peak:

Shillong Peak is amongst the highest points of this region. It is situated at an altitude of 6449 ft above sea level. This point serves a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire Meghalaya city, the Himalayas, its waterfalls. The peak is also referred to be the abode of the deity that protects the city.

Mawphlang houses Meghalaya’s Sacred Forest, is a beautiful village situated 25 km away from the main city. The sacred forest is also a famous attraction in Mawphlang which is of immense spiritual importance to the Khasis. The forest of Mawphlang has a wide variety of flora and fauna.  It is a perfect destination for nature walks and trekking. It is a paradise for nature lovers.

Police Bazar:

Police Bazar is the major market to visit in this region. Police Bazaar of Shillong is also known as Khyndailad is the prime shopping hub. It is the ideal place to book a hotel for travelers of Shillong. For its extensive collection, people choose it over Bara Bazaar. 

Khasi Hills:

Khasi hills are a major attraction of this region. This hill is named after the Khasi tribe of Meghalaya. The Khasi Hills are a part of the Garo-Khasi range.
