SCHOOL VISITS THAT BRING FARMING TO LIFE!

If you’re looking for a school trip that will engage and inspire pupils, you’ve come to the right place.

School Travel Awards 2023 Finalist

We are passionate about helping the next generation understand the ‘farm to fork’ process and our role as farmers in conservation on our 750-acre working family farm. Our progressive approach sees us produce traditionally reared, grass-fed beef cattle and sheep kept to the highest welfare standards alongside sustainably grown arable crops, including wheat, oil seed rape, maize and sweetcorn. We also grow potatoes, carrots and pumpkins; giving us a diverse crop rotation.

We take our role as guardians of the countryside very seriously, planting trees and actively encouraging wildlife to make the farm their home and also embrace the latest technology to help us reduce our carbon footprint.

TOPICS TO SUIT YOUR CURRICULUM…

Our visits are split into three main themes – activities will depend on the time of year you visit, but content can be tailored around the age of your pupils and what you are focusing on in the classroom:

FARM-TO-FORK

Learn about what we grow on the farm and what it is used for.

We’ll give you an overview of what we produce throughout the farming year, but what you see and do will depend on when you visit.

For example, during January, we will take the children on a trailer ride to the wheat fields (wellies needed!) where they’ll learn about sowing and harvesting, before seeing the Oil Seed Rape in its early growing stages.

If you visit in Spring, you’ll see these two crops growing fast, ready for harvest in August.

In September, you’ll get to see some harvesting in action, while during late autumn visits, you can see crops in store; look at our vast pumpkin fields or find out what crops are being sown ready for next summer’s harvest.

Children can even pretend to be ‘little farmers’ – planting seeds, bulbs or trees (depending on the time of the year) or maybe picking/digging some fresh veg to take home and enjoy with their families.

On our farm you can learn about farm animals and their young.

Our very own Farmers will give you a fascinating talk on the animals that call the farm home with lots of fun facts.

You can then visit our Animal Zone to meet some of our friendly animals, which will vary depending on when you visit (during winter our beef herd will be indoors sheltering from the weather on thick straw beds, and during February and you can see our lambs and ewes in the lambing barn).

In Spring, Summer and early Autumn you may also get to hop on our farm trailer ride (weather dependent) to visit lots of other animals – great and small – including some of Farmer Ray’s more unusual pets, which include llamas and emus!

THE WORKING FARM

Come and take a look ‘behind the scenes’ and learn about the busy, varied life of a farmer!

Children will enjoy a fun, informative talk from Farmer Ray, Farmer Richard, Farmer Roger or Farmer Connie – who’ll share their vast farming knowledge with plenty of entertaining anecdotes alongside fascinating farming facts.

They’ll also learn about the impact farming has on each and every one of our lives and the different types of farming that help put food on our tables.

You’ll then learn about harvest time and get to ‘meet’ the machines that are so key to the success of the farm; discovering what they are used for and seeing how technology has changed farming over the years.

You may also have a chance to climb inside our Combine Harvester for real a ‘Farmers’ View’ of the world (please pre-arrange this with our Schools Co-ordinator).

FARMING FOR THE FUTURE

As an intergenerational farm, you will learn how our role is changing as an industry, as we adapt to and mitigate against Climate Change and strive to hit the target NetZero in terms of carbon emissions by 2040. Older school children can study our carbon audit, which was undertaken by McDonald’s in 2022 (and to whom we are proud to sell our beef), while younger school children can help ‘do their bit’ by planting a tree in the winter.

This makes us ideally placed to offer educational visits on a diverse range of topics to suit different ages and areas of the curriculum, with a focus on STEM learning. But our school visits aren’t all about learning – children will also enjoy access to the huge indoor and outdoor play areas in our onsite PLAY@ farm attraction as part of their visit – making it truly a day to remember!

ACTIVITIES THAT CHANGE WITH THE SEASONS

Our visits are built around children experiencing ‘live’ farming – so the activities will depend on the topic you choose and what’s happening down on the farm at the time of your visit. Whatever the time of year, you can rest assured of a great mix of interactive learning, ‘hands-on’ activities and exploring our large & small animal zones before letting off steam in the play areas. Here’s a rough guide of what to expect throughout the farming calendar:

Pumpkin field

September & October

Harvest time! Get hands-on picking potatoes, carrots, sweetcorn or pumpkins. Children will also see the planting of our winter crops – Wheat and Oil Seed Rape – and have chance to ‘meet the machines’.

Wildflower field

November’s ‘hands on’ activities include planting bulbs and trees.

Lower Drayton Farm Christmas - Santas helpers

Christmas is a magical time at the farm. Our XMAS@ immersive experience is perfect for younger children – as well as meeting Santa and enjoying festive crafts in the elves’ workshop, the adventure includes a Christmassy tale in the Haybarn Theatre and fun indoor faux-snowball fun.

Close up of a goat

Plant bulbs and trees, hop on the farm trailer ride to see how the winter crops are growing and help us feed the wildlife.

Sheep and lambs

February & March

With lambing season well underway, you’ll join us in our purpose-built lambing barn to meet the new arrivals – and their mums! Planting potatoes may also be an option at this time of year.

Trailer ride to see cows

April & May

With Spring in full bloom, now’s the time for planting pumpkin, sweetcorn and sunflowers seeds, with trailer rides to the livestock fields to see our animals and their babies.

Treetop slides

This time of year sees our legendary trailer ride really come into its own – see the crops before harvest, plant some wildflowers, and meet the machines before making the most of our outdoor adventure playground.

A TAILORED EXPERIENCE…

Every one of our school trips is unique; our school coordinator will work with you to tailor a trip with activities that support the curriculum and are suited to the age and abilities of your group.

Half-day or full-day sessions are available as a cost of £10-00 per person (half day) and £12.50pp (full day). Children should bring their own packed lunch and dress suitably for time on the farm – wellies and a warm, waterproof coat are recommended to change into for outdoor elements.

HOW TO BOOK

Contact our school coordinator by email on [email protected]

Feedback from Schools

Vicki Hill, Veritas Primary Academy

“The children and the staff really enjoyed the trip. The children could not stop talking about it- even after the Easter holidays.

The staff said it was very good and the children learnt a lot from it so thank you to everyone involved in making the day memorable for the children.”

St Joseph’s Catholic Academy

“The whole of the nursery staff and children would like thank everybody at Lower Drayton Farm for the planning and execution of the most amazing trip. The children absolutely loved their day, all the activities and information was tailored to match their age and engage each child – which was greatly appreciated.

The subject knowledge of everyone at Lower Drayton Farm was great! We learnt lots of amazing facts and the children have loved sharing the facts with everyone today at school. Both group leaders were amazing with the children, particularly with some of the quieter children – making their experience memorial. The day was planned perfectly, having the appropriate amount of play, learning opportunities and experiences. The variety of animals we saw and handled was also amazing.

The nursery staff loved that they had the opportunity to take a step back and enjoy the trip as much as the children. One member of staff has commented to say it was the best trip she had ever been on.

The facilities were extremely clean and it was amazing to have the whole farm to ourselves, it made the experience so much more enjoyable for everyone! We would highly recommend coming to Lower Drayton Farm for a day or school trip and we defiantly hope to come back soon!

Thank you so much for a great day! We had the best time and created memories that will hopefully forever.”

  • Absolutely worth every penny I had previously been skeptical about coming to Play @ Lower Drayton as I thought it seemed expensive (adult price costing the same as a child's) but I have to admit that it was absolutely worth every penny. The facilities were great and there is SO much to do. You could easily spend a whole day in there and once in there, food, drinks and other items (buckets and spades etc) are a very reasonable price. Every single member of staff was polite and attentive (even those we simply walked passed always gave us a smile or said hello). We cannot wait to return again and when we do, will ensure to spend a full day at Play. A Guest 03 Jun 2024
  • Very good, plenty of things to do throughout the day Peter Warby 05 May 2024
  • Always love coming to the Play Barn and walking around the farm. There is so much to do and they always go the extra mile to create special events throughout the year! My son had his 4th birthday party there this weekend and it was amazing, everything went like clockwork, the party room (pig) was great with plenty of room and had everything we needed. I opted to have LD supply the party bags too which contained toys and treats all in a bag covered in activities. The staff are always amazing, so friendly and there on hand to help all the way though. we were let down last minute by an external Spiderman character and without even asking they found a costume in their bag of tricks and Miss Marvel brought in the cake and had a dance party with the kids! Our approach to learning

We believe the UK’s longest river can uniquely inspire young learners.  We want local children and young people to make a powerful connection with the River Severn.  Outreach is a fundamental element of our project, and we have already engaged over 6000 school children.  In partnership with schools, our project is developing pupils’ understanding and pride in the natural heritage of our river.

We want to inspire awe and wonder when young people visit the riverside. Back in the classroom, arts activities and storytelling using our resources can continue to ignite young imaginations, help children embed their learning and creatively explore this underwater river-world. Young people will also have powerful opportunities to see STEM applied in practice in the ambitious engineering that will enable this river restoration for migratory fish.

Diglis Island

As part of our project, we completed renovation work on the Victorian heritage buildings on Diglis Island, belonging to Canal River Trust.  The island now provides a unique learning destination for school visits.  The special location on an island in the middle of the River Severn, and the distinctive character of the former lock-gate workshop provides an extraordinary learning space.  Visiting school groups can learn more about the river, its wildlife, and the modern engineering involved in designing and building an innovative fish pass at Diglis.

In, autumn 2021 we ran a series of pilot tours of Diglis Island and the fish pass – an impressive 100m structure – including the underwater viewing gallery, allowing rare glimpses of the underwater world of river fish. Our workshop and visitor facilities provided the base for these booked tours. We had fantastic feedback from teachers and students, and are thrilled to have been able to continue these visits, with the support of the Canal & River Trust Explorer Volunteers.

Underwater Viewing Gallery

Our underwater viewing gallery is located at Diglis Fish Pass in Worcester. The viewing gallery provides a unique perspective of the River Severn, as our huge 2.0 x 2.5 m window allows you to see under the water into the fish pass itself.

The gallery has been built to offer members of the public and school groups a chance to connect with the fish of the River Severn in a special way. Standing at the window, you have the opportunity to see wild fish swimming past as they make their way upstream on their migration. We also use it for scientific monitoring purposes. Specialist motion-sensor cameras capture the different fish as they swim past the window. We then use this data to assess how many fish are using Diglis Fish Pass, what species are making use of it, and what time of day they tend to move upriver.

Canal & River Trust Explorers

Canal & River Trust, the charity who look after and bring to life 2,000 miles of waterways, was a delivery partner for Unlocking the Severn.  They have extensive experience and commitment to schools’ outreach.  ‘Explorers’ is the Trust’s education programme aimed at children aged 5-11 which exists to inspire children’s learning by connecting them to our canals and rivers. These waterways offer powerful ways to engage children and bring learning to life. The learning programme is closely linked to the national curriculum and group badges. Dedicated Canal and River Trust volunteers lead inspiring visits on the towpath, in our museums or in your school or clubhouse.

Visit the  Explorers website  for education resources, games and more information about educational visits to discover the magic of the waterways.

Worcester is a key location for Unlocking the Severn. Two of the River Severn fish passes will be constructed here.

At Diglis – engineers will install a deep vertical slot fish pass next to the weir. This fish pass will also include an innovative underwater viewing gallery for monitoring the fish and providing a whole new perspective on life beneath the water. We are also restoring a Victorian workshop on Diglis Island to provide a place for learning and exhibitions.

At Bevere – a 100m bypass-channel will be introduced with blocks and a shallow enough gradient for shad to swim around the weir.

Coming Up: – Our next information event on Diglis Island – due to take place in July – details to be confirmed nearer the time. – Exhibitions and activities will take place at The Hive – including children’s activities during Easter holidays and a photography exhibition in August 2019 – Places of Poetry workshops in July 2019.

Shrewsbury is a town which has grown within a dramatic loop of the River Severn.

Volunteers have helped us investigate the Shropshire Archives here for insights into how the towns history relates to the river, and how what records of shad we can find of shad they used to migrate all the way to Shrewsbury and beyond.

In 2020, an Unlocking the Severn Exhibition will be installed at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery .

Tewkesbury is an important location for monitoring shad as the Upper Lode Weir on the Severn Ham, is the only place on the River Severn you can easily observe shad, as they swim over a notch in the weir.

You can join our people-powered science project at the riverside in May. Find Out More

Creating unforgettable experiences

School trips are powerful and positive experiences for children of all ages. They provide unique opportunities for children to learn, with varied hands-on activities in new and exciting environments. Learning outside the classroom adds value to each child’s individual academic and personal development, and enhances the activities from within the classroom.

we offer day trips across all year groups and residential trips in years three to six. these are often recounted as a highlight of our pupils’ time at rgs springfield.

Educational visits are an integral part of the learning experience for pupils at RGS Springfield, from Nursery to Year Six. We are fortunate to be able to offer a large number of trips and experiences for our pupils as part of our curriculum.

Our planned programme, particularly the residential element, has been developed to offer added value to your child:

  • Providing new physical and mental challenges in activity trips, giving your child the opportunity to develop their independence, leadership and confidence
  • Providing opportunities to embed your child’s understanding of key areas of the curriculum by showing the material studied in a new context
  • Allowing your child to develop stronger relationships with fellow pupils and with staff through an enjoyable experience

Recent trips have included days out to the Houses of Parliament and Stratford Upon Avon, as well as residential trips in Years Five and Six to France and Osmington Bay. Years Three and Four have enjoyed shorter residential stays in the Wye Valley and the Malvern Hills.

'It’s about believing, right?': St. John's baseball ties it in 7th, edges St. John's Prep in 9th to advance to D1 Final Four

school trips worcestershire

SHREWSBURY — Conor Secrist stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning with a chance to end the game and extend the season for the St. John’s High baseball team.

The sophomore saw five pitches, fouling off the last two, before flying out to right field to strand two runners and send a state tournament roller-coaster ride with Catholic Conference rival St. John’s Prep to extra innings.

“So I knew when I came up there in the ninth, I had to do something with the bases loaded.” Secrist said, the score still deadlocked at 6-all.

Secrist quickly found himself down two strikes, but he was more confident than concerned in the two-out situation.

“I was just excited, and I knew I was on the pitcher,” he said.

Secrist then hit a sharp single up the middle, driving in junior Brayden Mercier, who doubled with one out and advanced to third on a wild pitch, to deliver a 7-6, walk-off win Friday for the second-seeded Pioneers in a Division 1 quarterfinal.

It was the second walk-off hit this season for Secrist and the second straight for the Pioneers, who defeated Franklin here Tuesday in the second round on Mercier’s eighth-inning single.

“Every game we’ve played with them this year has been an absolute battle,” first-year coach Casey Cummins said of the No. 7 Eagles, who finished 15-8 after going 1-2 versus the Pioneers.

“It’s about believing, right? Our guys didn’t want this magical run to end. We said the same thing the other day against Franklin.”

The Pioneers (19-4) are back in the state semifinals for the second straight season, where they’ll meet either No. 3 Xaverian — with whom they shared the conference championship — or No. 11 Durfee on Tuesday at a time and place to be determined.

And all that after a game in which they faced quite a bit of adversity, some of it due to unfortunate circumstances and some a result of their own doing.

Sophomore leadoff hitter Jamie Herlihy suffered a right wrist injury and didn’t return after being tagged out at home while attempting to score from third on a ball in the dirt in the first. That was one of four inning-ending outs the Pioneers ran into.

They also committed two errors that led to three unearned runs, and senior slugger Noah Baadsgaard departed midway through the game with a leg injury.

“We talk about picking each other up and moving to the next guy,” said Cummins, who shouldered the blame for some of those base-running miscues. “And, hey, my guys picked me up today. I can’t say enough about this group.

“Once again, just like against Franklin the other day, against a very good team, they were able to execute, get it to the next guy. Just belief. It’s been special; it’s been special.”

The Pioneers led, 2-0, after three and tied it in the fifth after the Eagles scored four in the top of the inning. The visitors got a two-out, two-run homer from junior Nic Lembo off senior ace Brady Shea (6⅔ innings, 7 hits, 3 earned runs, 3 walks, 8 strikeouts) to regain the lead in the seventh.

The Pioneers were down on the scoreboard, but their enthusiasm and optimism remained up as they prepared for what might be their final at-bats of the season.

“They didn’t want it to end, and they didn’t want it to end on this field,” Cummins said. “I can’t say enough about the compete level of all these guys.”

Forgues made sure the game continued with his double to deep center that drove in junior Desmond Hayeck, who ran for Jack Pasenello after the senior walked with one out, and Mercier, who walked with two out, to craft a 6-6 tie.

The large, mostly partisan crowd was jumping for joy and in amazement (disbelief?) at what they had witnessed at Pioneer Field.

“I was just thinking, ‘Don’t end it,’ ” Forgues said. “I just wanted to get a good pitch that I could drive and treat it as any other at-bat in a full season.

“In between the lines, same game I’ve been playing since I was a kid. So just tried to keep it within myself and simplify everything, catch the ball with the bat.”

Forgues finished with three hits, four RBIs, a walk (intentional) and a run. He earned the win in relief after needing just 24 pitches to retire all seven batters he faced over 2⅓ innings.

While Forgues threw strikes, his big hit came on a hook.

“It was a hanging curveball,” Forgues said. “I kind of picked it up out of his hands, sat back and just tried to put it back at him. It was definitely a good swing.”

Mercier had three hits — he’s now 10 for 13 in the tournament — drove in a run, scored three times, and walked once, while junior Parker Higgins came off the bench to deliver an RBI single and reach via two intentional walks.

And Shea, who never bats, singled and scored in the second.
