Chipilima Hydro Electric Project Dam, Sambalpur

Cattle Island is located near Kumarbandh village of the Belpahar-Banharpali range. It is about 90 km from  Sambalpur  and 10 km by waterway from Hirakud Dam. It is one of the best place near Sambalpur and It is popular among the devotee of Lord Siva. One can worship in the temple and enjoy the lake, fish, tortoise and the view. During the rainy season or Shivratri festival many pilgrims from all over Odisha comes to this place. It is around 9 km from Sambalpur city.

This temple is dedicated to lord Shiva and this is a situated at the top of the hill popularly known as Budharaja. It is sitated about 5 km from Sambalpur railway sation. There are steps to reach there. One can reach the temple at hill top by foot or car. But the journey to the temple by walk is enjoyable and thrilling. The view of the city is breathtaking and the natural surrounding is well maintained.

It is small zoo located centrally in Sambalpur and about 7-8 km away from city Railway station. This is a clean and well maintained zoo-cum-park which has about 150 deer, Leopard, Sambhar, chowsingha, Wild Boar, Sloth Bear, Fox etc. The zoo has a forest covered hill on almost two sides, so there is peace and stillness inside this zoo. One can just sit idle on the benches and enjoy the greenery and nature.

A Great place in the nature world to spend time with friends and family. Located in the deep jungle. Beautiful waterfalls are there. Good place for picnic. Now the facilities are improving. Water facilities were not there before but now they have couple of borewels. Walking path is now paved. Couple of bridges also has been built to walk over the stream. The place has become cleaner hence people are coming here more often.

This is a very popular temple in Chipilama, very close to power station. There are two entries one takes you directly to the temple, other way is through the power station, it has good sights in hold and overall enjoyable experience. The temple has a very calm and peaceful atmosphere, people buy and hang bells as a charm to ensure fulfillment of their wishes. There is also a picnic spot nearby, the only downside being locally available food, which is not great and can be avoided. Note photographs are prohibited inside actual Maa Ghanteswari Temple building and not in premises.

The artificial reservoirs comfortably exceed the number of natural lakes in Odisha. These artificial lakes are a marvel of Odisha’s engineering that is best exemplified by the majestic Hirakud Dam. Being the longest dam in the world built across the Mahanadi River near Sambalpur, Hirakud also shares the honor of being the largest dam built of earth itself. It is also the largest artificial lake in Asia whose enormity can only be ascertained by climbing to the top of the revolving Gandhi Minar or the Nehru Minar at the other end of the dam.

The Ushakothi Sanctuary is one of the most famous sanctuaries at Odisha. It is situated in Yavatmal at a distance of around 48 kms from the place called Ushakothi. There are various types of plants like neem, sandalwood, casuarinas, sal, and acacia. Many different species of animals like leopards, tigers, elephants, and wolves are found here.

Huma is home to the popular  leaning temple dedicated to Lord Bimaleswar. It is located about 32 km from Sambalpur, on the bank of the Mahanadi river, it offers visitors a beautiful view of the surrounding environs. Kudo fishes are very famous and found aplenty in the river at this point. It is a case of “you can look but you cannot touch”, since famous belief has it that the fishes belong to Lord, Bimaleswar.

This wildlife sanctuary is situated 40 km away from Sambalpur in Baragarh District, Odisha. Debrigarh area is like anemerald nestled in the serene blue waters of Hirakud dam. The sanctuary is popular for its wild beauty and also for offering easy sighting of wildlife. The dry deciduous forests with varied flora and fauna attract the tourists of Odisha and neighboring states.Hirakud Dam is built across the Mahanadi River, about 15 km from Sambalpur District of Odisha .The reservoir is the largest manmade water body in Asia and flanks about one third of the landscape boundary on the eastern side. Hirakud Dam -

About 20 km northwest of Sambalpur, the gigantic Hirakud Dam was completed in 1957 with the sole objective of combating the recurring devastating floods of the delta region caused by Mahanadi. This has also helped in irrigating the vast areas of land.

Ushakothi Wildlife Sanctuary  -

The wildlife sanctuary at Badrama, popularly called Ushakothi is a densely forested area providing natural habitat to a wide variety of wildlife. It is about 50 km east of Sambalpur on NH6 towards Kolkata.

Only 32 km from Sambalpur, Huma has the lone Leaning Temple of Odisha (Orissa). The temple on the bank of Mahanadi is dedicated to Lord Bimaleswar or Shiva. The colourful Kudo fishes in the nearby flowing Mahanadi are never caught as these are believed to belong to Lord Shiva, very friendly to visitors who feed them grain. Country boats are available for hire to cruise on river. Regular bus service is available upto Huma Chowk, from where it is 2 km walk to the temple.
