Gary Neville’s The Overlap on Tour kicks off with a trip to Roy Keane’s homeland

roy keane overlap tour

Roy Keane is known for being a very private man but in Sky’s new show The Overlap on Tour which premiered on Sky Max this week, the football legend welcomes cameras back to his hometown of Cork.

Joined by fellow sporting heroes Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher, Roy offers viewers ‘a little window’ into his life with a whistle-stop tour of Cork that includes visits to his former clubs, the church where he got married and a trip to Blarney Castle to kiss the famous Blarney Stone.

The show is presented in a unique format – a live recording of Gary Neville’s The Overlap on Tour interspersed with snippets of the long-time friends touring the UK and Ireland.

The first episode sets the tone for the series, an interesting mix of personal anecdotes, behind-the-scenes stories, live show highlights, special guest appearances (you don’t want to miss the striking contest with hurling legend TJ Reid in Croke Park!) and trips to locations that hold special meaning in the men’s careers.

Roy Keane The Overlap on Tour with Gary Neville

For Roy, there’s no place like home as he tells the crowd in Dublin’s 3Arena ‘it’s great to be back in Ireland.’

The Irish leg of the tour sees the trio visit Roy’s beloved Maryfield and his old football haunts Rockmount AFC and Cobh Ramblers.

It’s here the football pundit earned his stripes before moving on to play for Nottingham Forest in the UK.

‘My dream was always to get to England and play professional football,’ he explains. ‘

At 18/19 I got a few breaks. That’s why I never forget the little bit of luck I had along the way.’

‘We all have different paths to get to where we get to and it’s great to come back and see other people’s journeys,’ former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher tells the camera, and that’s exactly why The Overlap on Tour is so charming.

Gary Neville’s The Overlap has quickly become one of the most popular sports podcasts in the UK and now they’re taking the hit Sky Sports show on the road.

The Overlap Live Tour was announced on Monday, 5 December, revealing four massive live shows across the UK and Ireland in 2023, featuring go-to guests Jamie Carragher, Roy Keane and more.

Due to high demand, a fourth show in Dublin was added to the list of dates which will no doubt please everyone’s favourite irritable Irishman.

The sports discussion podcast and YouTube show gives exclusive insights into some of Britain’s greatest athletes and a behind-the-scenes look at their lives outside of the sporting area.

While Neville and co. have held standalone live shows and fan debates before in the likes of London and Manchester, this is the first official Overlap Tour, with the run ending at O2 Apollo Manchester on 8 June.

Regular host Josh Denzel and Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football presenter Kelly Cates will be joining them on their Overlap Live trip around the UK next year.

Used to heated discussion and no-holds-barred opinions, Gary said: “The reaction to the Wembley show has been brilliant so we are delighted to be able to confirm three new dates… It’s fair to say these will be lively shows and I think all three of us know exactly what we are in for!

“As with the Wembley show we’ll be opening up to questions throughout the night, which we might live to regret, but it should be interesting to say the least – particularly for me and Roy in Liverpool! Seriously though, these will all be great nights – so join us if you like!”

Over 33,000 fans welcomed a star-studded lineup of legends to the Theatre of Dreams with Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Paul Scholes all back donning United red in aid of the Manchester United Foundation.

United’s squad were to entertain a Celtic XI featuring Stylian Petrov and former Manchester City man Georgios Samaras. The match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes before the visitors prevailed in a 5-4 win on penalties.

The United legends were on top for large portions of the game, but if ever the men in green and white stripes were up against it, they certainly had a 12th man to boost their motivation.

Here’s what we took away from the wholesome day of charity football.

Five things we learned from the Man United vs Celtic Legends game

Celtic fans travel in force for the united legends game.

The Glaswegian side has followers around the world and the ‘Green Wall’ were in good voice in the away corner of Old Trafford . It was difficult to avoid the shamrock of the hoops on the ride up to the ground, which seemed to be an almost 50/50 colour split on the walk up along Sir Matt Busby Way.

The reason could lie in Manchester’s large Irish community showing support for their second favourite club, behind the Reds, of course.

They were a constant presence until the final whistle, receiving the result they deserved as Darren O’Dea slotted the winning penalty in the shootout – with a compulsory belly slide celebration to boot.

Carrick and Fletcher have still got it

Amidst Man United’s current midfield woes, the match on Saturday confirmed that the partnership of Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher still works in 2024. The midfield pairing dictated proceedings with their usual calm and control which never left the duo despite being on the wrong side of 40 years old.

As the match went on and the pace of the game gradually diminished, I couldn’t help but wonder whether my Sunday side could give these old boys a game.

A sequence of one-touch passes and neat flicks around the corner between the pair followed by a meandering run into the box by Carrick quickly put all my questions to bed. They are five-time Premier League winners for crying out loud, we’ll just stick to the local park.

No such thing as a friendly

Even for a charity match, there is no love lost between ex-professionals. Their bodies might be ageing but the passion for a meaty tackle evidently never goes away.

For the Reds, Phil Bardsley and Fletcher couldn’t help but get stuck in whilst Celtic’s Joe Ledley and Charlie Mulgrew were the main culprits to never shirk a 50/50.

The Celtic boys were flying in around the box, which helped give us the moment of the game – a Wayne Rooney free-kick into the top corner from 25 yards. Textbook.

Rooney never lets you down

If it was ever in doubt, Wazza’s class is permanent. He may be a far cry from the 18-year-old who would go on to score over 250 goals for the Red Devils but he rolled back the years with a pearler of a strike.

After a previous attempt from a dead ball which struck the wall, the former England man obliged with his next attempt. He was hardly going to let the Old Trafford faithful leave without another iconic finish.

The goal just before the halftime break drew the entire stadium to its feet, including a rightful applause from the travelling support. The second biggest roar came during his departing substitution for Paul Scholes – a fitting tribute to mark the return of arguably United’s best ever.

More than just a game

With the first team action on hold due to the international break, this was the perfect replacement of footballing action for an unbelievable cause.

The match against Celtic generated almost £1 million in revenue, which will help to support the Manchester United Foundation’s work with young people in Greater Manchester and other outreach areas in the UK.

United Foundation Chief Executive John Shiels said: “We’d like to thank our fantastic team of legends for playing so brilliantly in the name of charity.”

“We are incredibly thankful to Manchester United fans for supporting our work all year round, but especially so today, when the price of their ticket goes back into our work supporting young people.”

What better way to connect to our community than through the beautiful game?

Gary Neville exclusive: “If you’d said I'd be going on tour with Jamie Carragher one day, I’d have said you were f**king mad…”

The former Manchester United and Liverpool rivals tell FFT about joining forces with Roy Keane for The Overlap On Tour

Jamie Carragher, Roy Keane and Gary Neville on tour

For 15 years, Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville were fierce rivals, figureheads of the long-standing enmity between Liverpool and Manchester United. These days, they’re going abseiling and skydiving together.

The punditry pair have been working alongside each other on Sky Sports for some time now, first linking up for the 2013-14 season - their double act has been so successful that it’s spawned The Overlap On Tour, an expanded version of Neville’s Overlap show, where the former England full-back interviews star names.

In a new four-part series, which begins on Sky Max at 9pm tonight (Wednesday, June 14), Neville and Carragher are joined by fellow Sky pundit Roy Keane as they head to Dublin, London, Liverpool and Manchester for shows at packed arenas.

The weekly episodes also feature the trio visiting the places where each grew up - in an entertaining first programme, they head to Keane’s boyhood clubs Rockmount and Cobh Ramblers, as well as making the trip to kiss Ireland’s famous Blarney Stone and learning how to play hurling at Croke Park, with mixed success.

In later episodes, they have a go at becoming a referee on Hackney Marshes (with help from Mike Dean), abseil at Anfield and even jump out of a plane. It’s all a far cry from the days when they were at each other’s throats on the pitch for their respective clubs.

The trio have a game at officiating

“If you’d said to me 10 years ago I’d be going on tour with Jamie Carragher, I’d have said ‘You’re f**king mad’,” Neville jokes, prompting laughter from his former rival, as both chat to FourFourTwo . “But things evolve. The camaraderie between all of us is the strongest part of the show.

“The live shows have been amazing - the idea for those came from us, but it was Sky who wanted the road trip element of it and it’s worked really well, with nostalgic moments visiting where we grew up and other different challenges, which have made it exciting.”

The arena shows have already been a big hit with live audiences - Neville’s presence at the Liverpool show and Carragher’s appearance in Manchester adding spice to the occasion. “Going into each other’s patch brings something to the atmosphere straight away,” Carragher smiles. “It’s good cop, bad cop - I’m the bad cop in Manchester, Gary and Roy get all the cheers.

“We’ve just been filming the last episode - we went to Gary’s home town Bury, after going to Roy’s in Cork before that, seeing their family members, friends and where they grew up, things I hadn’t seen before.

“We’ve also gone out of our comfort zone - skydiving, not things I’d ever have done before I did this show. It was a bit terrifying, but I’m sure it’ll make good TV!”

The three pundits during an arena show

As will the abseiling at Anfield. “That was brilliant, one of the best moments of my life,” Neville chuckles. “I don’t like heights and I’d never done anything like that. Before we did it, I was terrified.”

“Basically, he wasn’t as terrified as me though!” Carragher says.

“He bottled it at the top and wouldn’t go down!” Neville laughs. “So I went down and just started screaming. It was so enjoyable.”

Given that he was a Manchester United treble winner, abseiling at Anfield, was he paranoid that someone might cut his rope? “There’s always that…” Neville laughs. “I was a bit more fearful though that the parachute wouldn’t open going out of the plane when we went skydiving!”

An afternoon refereeing on Hackney Marshes was rather less fear-inducing, thankfully. “Carra was the best at it, according to Mike Dean - but Mike Dean’s from the Wirral, by the way…” Neville smiles.

Keane, Carragher and Neville have teamed up for The Overlap On Tour

“I think I enjoyed it more than the others and maybe was a little bit fitter than the others - I think that helped me get the nod off Mike Dean,” Carragher laughs. “But it was helpful as well for our roles on TV, to understand what officials go through, the communications between each other to get to decisions. We learned a lot.”

Neville has interviewed a long list of people for The Overlap since it began in 2021, including David Beckham, Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. “I’ve interviewed Vincent Kompany recently too and enjoyed that - I’d spoken to him before of course, but it was really interesting to listen to him now in his post-football career,” the former Manchester United defender says. “There are quite a few people I’d still like to interview - we’re going to have a quieter summer, we’re ready for a break, but then we’ll go hard again for the start of the season.”

LONDON, ENGLAND - AUGUST 10: Pundits and former football players Roy Keane and Ian Wright share a joke prior to the 2024 FA Community Shield match ...

Ian Wright tells Roy Keane of his ‘amazing’ experience of playing alongside one ‘unbelievable’ Man Utd legend, he was in awe

Arsenal hero Ian Wright opened up to Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane about playing alongside one “unbelievable” and “amazing” Manchester United legend in his career.

Ian Wright had a remarkable playing career at club level and lifted a Premier League title, a European Cup Winners’ Cup, two FA Cups and a League Cup with Arsenal.

The 60-year-old former Arsenal striker made 281 appearances for the Gunners and netted an impressive 180 times during his spell at the club in the 1990s.

Despite his successful club career, footballer-turned-pundit Wright saw his playing time limited with England on the international stage.

Wright, who made his England debut under Graham Taylor in 1991, only managed 33 appearances for the Three Lions and scored nine times for his country.

The former Crystal Palace and Gunners star was even brutally snubbed by former England manager Terry Venables for Euro 96.

Wright on Man Utd legend

Ian Wright played in World Cup and European Championship qualifiers for England, but the Arsenal legend missed out on major tournaments for the Three Lions.

Despite his lack of opportunities for England, the former Crystal Palace and Arsenal striker shared fond memories with one Manchester United legend in a B team match.

Wright appeared in The Overlap ’s latest video alongside Roy Keane , Gary Neville , and Jamie Carragher during the YouTube channel’s tour in Turin, Italy.

The ex-Three Lions international was sat in the back of the car with United legend Keane and shared his experience of playing for England B at times.

Wright admitted to Keane that he deeply enjoyed one England B match that he played in his career after sharing the pitch with the United legend Bryan Robson .

“I played a B game,” he said.

“I played a B game with Bryan Robson [against] Algeria. Nah, it was amazing. It was because Bryan Robson was playing in it with me.

“It was unbelievable. I don’t know if he was coming from injury – we were in Algeria – it was amazing playing with him.”

Wright on playing against Robson

Bryan Robson remains United’s longest-serving captain in history and had a remarkable playing career at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson .

Wright crossed paths with the 67-year-old ex-United star when he was at Crystal Palace and scored a late equaliser against the Red Devils in a 1-1 draw in 1989.

Speaking to FourFourTwo in 2016, he said: “After winning promotion, we played Manchester United at home in the old First Division.

“They had the likes of Bryan Robson, Mark Hughes and Paul Ince playing for them. We were losing 1-0 after Robbo had given them the lead, but I equalised in the last few minutes.

“People had been saying: ‘You scored in the Second Division, but can you do it in the top league?’

“When I did it in the first home game of the season against Man United I realised: ‘I’m in the big league.’”

Keane sends warning to Grealish about Man City situation after England minutes

Roy Keane on Man City

Roy Keane has warned Jack Grealish that he may “lose that sharpness” unless he increases his game time under Pep Guardiola at Man City.

The former Aston Villa winger was in and out the side last season at the Etihad Stadium with Guardiola only affording him ten starts in the Premier League last term.

England captain Harry Kane scored twice on Tuesday night as he celebrated his 100th appearance for the Three Lions with a Nations League victory over Finland.

Interim boss Lee Carsley’s first match managing at Wembley was as dominant as Saturday’s win by the same scoreline away to the Republic of Ireland .

Grealish scored against the Republic of Ireland and was given a start again by Carsley as he played well again against Finland on Tuesday night – but former Man Utd midfielder Keane insists the England winger needs to be starting more for Man City.

“Biggest thing for Jack is, I definitely think he needs to play regularly at Man City and that’s obviously difficult, the challenges there,” Keane told ITV Sport .

“I think he needs to be sharp. When he’s not playing regularly he does lose that sharpness very quickly. So it’s key he gets games at City.

“Usually when you’re doing well at club level, you’re selected for your international team. So your bread and butter is what you do week-in, week-out at club level, particularly for players like Jack.

“After what’s happened this summer he’s reacted well, scored at the weekend, done well tonight. But looking forward, he has to play a lot more regularly for City.”

And fellow pundit Ian Wright reckons Grealish, who has started one Premier League match out of three for Man City this season, will be hard to keep out of the England and Citizens sides if he recaptures his “Aston Villa Jack” form.

“He’s trying to be progressive, taking people on, creating things – exactly what you want to see him doing. Getting past people, what we know he’s great at doing,” Wright said.

“We haven’t seen so much of it at City but we’ve seen it in the last couple of games for England.

“And again, it comes down to the opposition but it’s great to see him playing and playing in that style and hopefully it can be enough to force him into his team.

“I’d like to see him playing like he used to play because if he can get back to that Aston Villa Jack then there’s no way anyone can keep him out of that team.”

Roy Keane Had Some Remarkably Positive Things To Say About Man Utd

PJ Browne

Man Utd easily hurdled what could have been a tricky obstacle on Wednesday evening as they hammered CSKA Moscow 4-1 in Russia. Though, their cause was aided by some helpfully poor defending from the home side.

Speaking on ITV's Champions League highlights show, Roy Keane more than agreed with presenter Mark Pougatch that Man Utd are a different side this season.

In fact, Keane believes his old team 'are back'.

Oh, United are back. United now look like they can compete to win the big trophies. Whereas over the last year or two, you're looking at them and thinking, 'They'll win a League Cup' or the so-called lesser trophies. They're back now competing and you'd expect United now to be at the latter stages of the Champions League and certainly winning the Premiership.

Keane also lauded Romelu Lukaku - a player who destroyed Ireland at Euro 2016 - as a £75 million bargain.

He is a good player, at a good age; 24, an international player. He knows the Premiership. I think he was a bargain at £75 million - it was obvious he was going to score goals. He has got off to a good start. A big, strong boy. Speaks well, comes across well and seems like a decent character. His record at Everton was fantastic and clearly, he has gone to a bigger club and better team, who will create so many chances for him, he will get 25-30 goals a season. Advertisement

So just what is Roy Keane's problem with Liverpool?

Manchester United legend has been very outspoken about Liverpool's apparent shortcomings in the Champions League this season

He's a Manchester United legend who captained them to seven Premier League titles to help knock Liverpool off their famous "f*****' perch".

But other than that, just what exactly is Roy Keane's problem with Liverpool?

The former United skipper now combines his duties as Republic of Ireland assistant with a Champions League punditry role for ITV, and has not been shy of laying into Jurgen Klopp's Reds at every turn this season.

Liverpool booked their place in the last 16 of Europe's premier competition on Wednesday with a 7-0 blitzing of Spartak Moscow .

Philippe Coutinho scored his first-ever Liverpool hat-trick, while Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah also got in on the act alongside a brace from Sadio Mane.

Limited opposition? Possibly, but this was a Spartak team who had beaten Sevilla 5-1 earlier in the group stage and still had a chance of qualification heading into the final round of fixtures.

It was quite simply a stunning display of attacking football from Klopp's Reds, in particular their four goalscorers.

Who can Liverpool draw in last 16?

They finished the group stage as the highest scorers, with 23 - five more than they managed when they won the tournament in 2005 - but Keane was unimpressed .

"We keep repeating ourselves, the big tests are yet to come," sneered the Irishman. "Clearly they’re beating these so called lesser teams, it’s the same in the Premier League.

"They wouldn’t get that time and space against a decent team.

"Tonight they were enjoyable to watch, and if you give quality players time like that on the ball, they are going to punish you.

"But the reality is, if they’re playing a top team in Europe, they won’t get that time and space. They won’t get those opportunities."

It isn't the first time curmudgeon Keane has neglected to dish out even a smidgen of praise for Klopp's free-scoring side.

Keane had earlier proven himself as a hard man to please after watching Liverpool see off Maribor 3-0 at Anfield.

He said: "It's hard to get excited about them. To me, they are going nowhere fast."

The former Sunderland boss then proceeded to paraphrase a famous Bill Shankly quip about closing the curtains if Everton were playing in his garden.

"If Liverpool were playing out in my back garden, I wouldn't watch them," he added. "They're just drifting. Drifting nowhere."

Some indictment for a team who had just won 3-0. Original too...

Contrast those views with his take on former club United after watching them book their own place in the knockout stages.

"For my mind, they are in with a chance," said Keane.

"I think they are going along nicely and it's tough in Manchester at the moment with what City at doing.

"They have got them at the moment and I think United need to show them they are top dogs but they have great options going forward, they have got pace in the team and they will be a threat in the competition, of course they are."

Liverpool scored 11 goals more than United throughout the group stages - nearly twice as many as the 12 their fierce rivals managed.

Their goal difference was plus eight on the Red Devils, who were competing in Group A alongside FC Basel, CSKA Moscow and Benfica.

And Keane's wildly contrasting opinions on the two sides hasn't gone unnoticed by Liverpool fans, it seems...

Roy Keane makes prediction over Casemiro's Man Utd future and identifies Ten Hag mistake

Roy Keane is confident Casemiro will stay on at Manchester United despite his worrying form and believes Erik ten Hag made an error hauling the midfielder off against Liverpool.

Casemiro endured a tough end to last season amid United’s defensive injury woes, with the Brazilian forced to fill in as a makeshift centre-back in the absence of Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof.

The 32-year-old will have been desperate to prove his doubters wrong with a strong start to the 2024/25 campaign but he produced a horror-show display as United were swept aside by Liverpool on Sunday.

A clinical brace from  Luis Diaz  gave Liverpool a healthy two-goal advantage inside 42 minutes and Casemiro was largely to blame for both strikes, twice punished for giving away possession at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag decided to replace Casemiro with academy graduate Toby Collyer at the halfway stage but the substitution made little difference, with Mohamed Salah putting the visitors out of sight with an unanswered third in the 56th minute.

Footage soon began to circulate which appeared to show Casemiro leaving the the Theatre of Dreams before the final whistle had been blown, though  Erik ten Hag insisted this was not the case when he faced the media .

It appears unlikely the five-time Champions League winner will continue his run in Ten Hag’s starting XI against Southampton when the Premier League resumes after the international break.

There has even been speculation that Casemiro could be set for a loan move to Galatasaray before the Super Lig’s transfer deadline on September 13, with talks reportedly ongoing between the two clubs .

However, legendary former United captain Keane is reluctant to write Casemiro off just yet and feels Ten Hag should try playing the Brazil international in a more advanced position.

‘I think he will [play again]. Where else is he going to go, unless something is done in the next week? He’ll definitely be here until January,’ Keane said on The Overlap .

‘The one thing I would say… he had a difficult first half, obviously, but he played in the Community Shield, done okay, played against Fulham, done okay.

‘They should have beaten Brighton, Manchester City had half a team, I get it. But I wouldn’t be writing players off at that age.

‘We’re saying 31, 32… what happens, I’ve been there, when you get to that age and he had an unbelievably poor game which he did in the first half… everyone’s quick, as if none of us had a bad game when we were twenty two.

‘Everyone’s says, “Your legs are gone”, and you’re going, “Actually, my legs were gone a few years ago!”.’

The former Republic of Ireland international added: ‘I wouldn’t be writing him off yet.

‘Maybe his role in the team if he gets back in, gets a couple of games under his belt, might be higher up the pitch.

‘The first thing we always say is that he can’t get around the pitch but when you see him going forward he does have an eye for a pass and set-pieces, how many times do you see him get his head on it?

‘Will Casemiro get Man United back to competing with Man City? Of course not. But the deal is done, he’s at the club.’

Keane would have liked to have seen Casemiro given the chance to atone for his mistakes by staying on the pitch for the second half against Liverpool.

‘When he got taken off at half-time, I wouldn’t go as far as saying I feel sorry for him. Listen, he’s an experienced professional, he’s on a good deal, suck it up a little bit,’ he continued.

‘But when you make mistakes as a player, I bet he’s looking around going, “Lads…”.

‘I would have left him on. You bring on a young player and sometimes managers do that. They bring on a young player, a bit of PR, and this kid will probably be a decent player but when he comes on, he’s come on to a difficult situation at Old Trafford.

Related Video

‘It’s not because of what he’s done previously, I still think there’s enough there that he could maybe give something to Man United.

‘But the problem is that they’re still so far behind City, Arsenal and, on the evidence of the weekend, of course there is Liverpool.’
