Mojacar: One of the Prettiest Villages in Spain

Mojácar is a not-so-typical Andalucian white village on the Costa de Almeria.

About 2500 BC, in Los Letreros cave near Vélez Blanca, a Neolithic cave dweller painted a stick figure of a man with arms outstretched holding each end of what has since been interpreted as a rainbow in each hand. To a literal person, it could just as easily be a bow or even a skipping rope.

In the early 1960s, a group of Bohemian hippies, who had taken over the largely abandoned hill town of Mojácar, named the figure Indalo and endowed him with the power to ward off evil spirits. Reproductions of the figure started to appear on houses, in sculptures, on public buildings and guard rails over bridges.

Indalo Adopted by Almeria

Nobody now knows what those Bohemians were on, but something remarkable has happened over the last 60 years. From being an impoverished population of fewer than 1,000 people, Mojácar now has a population of over 6,000 and is a thriving town whose economy depends on the tourist trade and a large expat population.

In the meantime, the provincial government of Almeria adopted Indalo as their emblem, perhaps hoping that his spirit would do for Almeria as a whole what it had done for Mojácar. Leaving fantasy and all hallucinators aside, it is time to take a sober look at Mojácar.

Mojácar on the Edge of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Parque Natural

Mojácar is twice blessed. As well as being one of the most beautiful white villages in Spain, it is also on the coast just north of the border of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Parque Natural, the southernmost desert in Europe.

From Iberians to Greeks and Moors

Moorish Fountain

Mojácar is situated on a hill about 2 kilometres from the coast in the far northeast of Almeria and Andalucia itself.

Its history goes back over 2000 years. Unusually for coastal settlements in Andalucia, during the 1st millennium BC, it was the Greeks that came to dominate the town, displacing the Phoenicians and Carthaginians. They established a trading post there and called it Murgis Akra.

There is little evidence of any Roman occupation, but the place must have been known to them because they Latinised the name to Moxacar. The Moors came along and the town experienced another name change, to Muxacra from which the modern name Mojácar emerges.

Mudéjar Architecture in Mojácar

Valley of the Pyramids

The architecture and town plan of Mojácar is recognisably Moorish or Mudéjar. Very narrow, often stepped, streets, between square-built houses, crammed into a limited area surrounded then by a wall. Windows and doors are small and the ornate balconies on the first floors afford a degree of intimacy with neighbours across the street.

Since the reconquest in 1488, the same style of building has cascaded over the wall, almost to the foot of the hill. Today the only evidence of the Mediaeval wall is the gate through which pedestrians and donkeys entered the fortified town. It is appropriately called Puerto de la Ciudad and leads from Plaza Flores, outside the fortifications, into the very confined Plaza del Cano within.

An Impudent Mayor

Following the uncontested reconquest of the town, the local mayor refused to attend a meeting at the Moorish fountain where local leaders were to pledge their allegiance to the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, and where a pact was to be made allowing free association between Jews, Christians and Moors.

When questioned by the Monarchs as to his non attendance, the mayor stated that there was no need for him to attend since, although he was a Muslim, generations of his people had been born Spanish and should be treated as brothers rather than enemies. He considered himself, and by association, the town, to be, already, Spanish.

Perhaps even then Indalo was keeping a watchful eye on Mojácar and its impudent mayor. The Monarchs accepted his pledge of allegiance and took no action against the town or its occupants.

Walt Disney Was Not in Mojácar

The town prospered for four hundred years until, in the 19th century, a series of droughts caused crops to fail. Much of the, by now 10,000 population, emigrated to other parts of Spain and the Americas. A local legend insists that Walt Disney was one of the emigrants, although officially he was born in Chicago in 1901.

Mojácar is now on the edge of the last semi-arid zone in Europe. It is blessed by over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, a benign temperature in winter and rainfall of less than 40 mm.

By the 1960s, the population was down to fewer than 1,000 people. In a spark of genius, the local politicians realised that the only things going for the town were its climate and the spectacular scenery surrounding the area, including the Cabo de Gata just a few kilometres south-west. They decided to award free land to anybody that would build on it.

The offer was eagerly taken up by the afore-mentioned artistic types who established an artist’s colony. The houses were painted white, flowers of every hue appeared in tubs, growing up walls and on balconies. Artisan shops flourished, and Indalo arrived. It was not long before expats from all over Europe and large numbers of tourists started to descend on the town.

Mojácar Thrives

Within Mojácar, a fantastic array of restaurants, most with spectacular views from their terraces, opened to cater for the hungry hoards. Two kilometres away, hotels and holiday accommodation sprang up just behind the long, sweeping beach, that runs 10 kilometres all the way to the industrial town and port of Garrucha. The coastal strip became known as Mojácar Playa.

Mojácar Today: An Excellent Holiday Destination

Today Mojácar is, justifiably, an excellent holiday destination. The town itself is best explored on foot.

There are plenty of places for the weary to pause, to sit and have some refreshment, before ploughing on to the highest point of the town, the Mirador del Castillo. From there the view is across a flat plain, known as the valley of the Pyramids. It would have been, during the Greek era, an estuary.

Today the sea is on the horizon. High outcroppings of tough, volcanic rock would have been islands then are now lonely anomalies in a vast landscape. To the south-west is the rugged, remote, beautiful wilderness of the Cabo de Gata.

On the coast, a rash of hotels and apartments provide accommodation to sun worshippers who can enjoy an extensive beach that is rarely crowded. Mouthwatering aromas of barbequing fish, huge prawns, Padron peppers and pork loins swirl from the Chiringuitos.

On the inland side of the coast road, restaurants and bars of every nationality offer enough choice that would not be exhausted even by those on an extended stay.

The Most Beautiful Towns in Spain

The transformation of Mojácar has been so successful that it joins towns such as Zahara and Grazalema on the exalted list of ‘Los pueblos mas bonitos de Espana’, the most beautiful villages of Spain many of which are in Andalucia. Long may the Indalo rainbow shine over Mojácar.

Cabo de Gata National Park

To the east of the capital Almeria lies the Cabo de Gata Natural park which encumbers a dessert like landscape with a long rugged coastline.

The park is sparsely populated with a few small fishing villages and has become a magnet for nature lovers looking for unspoilt coves and beaches, many of which can only be reached by foot.

The actual town of Cabo de Gata is quite unimpressive so best to head north along the coast road to enter the main nature park area where you will find small coastal hamlets including San Jose, Los Escullos and La Isleta.

The Indalo is the symbol of Almeria

The Indalo man is the symbol representing Almeria and you will see it everywhere. It is an ancient symbol found in the province over a century ago although it dates back to Neolithic times.

It is thought the symbol depicts a man holding a rainbow over his head.

Home to a semi-arid desert

Tabernas desert is located about 30 kilomteres north of the regions capital city of Almeria. It is one of the most interesting places to visit in Spain as the landscapes are surreal, unique and quite breathtaking.

The desert will make you think you have arrived in the old wild west of America because of it's dry river beds, dusty trails, barren slopes and arid wide expanses.

Film makers where attracted to the desert and many spaghetti westerns where filmed here as well as more modern movies such as Indian Jones and the Last Crusade. You can even act like cowboy or cowgirl for the day in one of the desert's Western theme parks .

The Almeria coastline is full of hidden coves, sandy beaches and warm clear waters.

The pretty whitewashed town of Mojacar is envied for its unrivaled position set high in the Sierra Cabrera mountains, it is one of the most popular tourist places to visit on the Costa Almeria.

The small fishing village of San Jose and although it has become more popular with holiday makers the village has retained its charm with only low rise buildings and stunning beaches.

Top activities along this part of the coast include bike rides, horse riding, 4 x 4 tours and windsurfing.

The two most popular beaches in the area include the Playa de los Genoveses and the unique Playa Monsul which has large lumps of volcanic rock scattered and fine grey sand.

Roquetas del Mar

The coastal town of Roquetas del Mar is the main tourist destination on the Costa Almeria, an important fishing village located just 5 minutes drive south from the capital Almeria.

The smaller town of  Aguadulce ( Sweet water ), found just a 15 minute drive from Roquestas del Mar, became popular back in the 60s and has now been classified as a Centre of National Touristic Interest.

Všetko čo potrebujete vedieť o zájazde

Nie je to najnovší, ale dobre udržiavaný hotel sa nachádza priamo na promenáde. Do jachtového prístavu, ktorý je považovaný za turistické centrum obce, je to približne 2 km, pričom po ceste sa nachádza široký výber reštaurácií a barov. Vedľa hotela sa nachádza veľké nákupné a zábavné centrum. Vedľa hotela sa nachádza autobusová zastávka - autobusové spojenie do Almerie a Roquetas de Mar. Na letisko Malaga je to približne 195 km. Na letisko Almeria cca 30 km.

Objekt sa nachádza priamo na piesočnatej a kamienkovej pláži. Ležadlá a slnečníky na pláži - za poplatok (cca 5 EUR/osoba/deň).

Spropitné Je vhodné nechávat malou částku jako spropitné. Spropitné se nechává zejména řidičům na fakultativních výletech a číšníkům v restauracích. V některých případech může být spropitné přičteno k ceně. 

Vízum Čeští obyvatelé mohou cestovat jen s platným občanským průkazem nebo cestovním pasem.

Prosíme o seznámení se s tarifními podmínkami roamingu u operátora před odjezdem na dovolenou.     Costa de Almería Pobřeží Alemría se nachází ve stejnojmenné provincii, v jihovýchodním Španělsku. Rozprostírá se od hranice s provincií Granada až po hranice s provincií Murcia (přes 200 km pobřeží). Za prohlídku určitě stojí hlavní město Almería - kdysi důležitý obchodní přístav ve Středozemním moři. Po nadvládě Arabů zde zůstala Alcazaba - jedna z největších maurských pevností v Andalusii. Costa de Alemría je známé místo s kvalitními hotely a s širokými a skvěle upravenými plážemi v západní části pobřeží a s divočejšími plážemi na východě. Mezi nejznámější letoviska patří Roquetas de Mar, Aquadulce a Mojacar. Coste de Almería je také biosférickou rezervací Cabo da Gata - Nijar (UNESCO), která je známá pouštním klimatem, sopečnými skalními útvary, členitým pobřežím a pobřežními útesy.

Letoviska na Costa de Almería

Roquetas de Mar Typické letovisko, jedno z nejstarších a nejvýznamnějších středisek v provincii se nachází cca 18 km od hlavního města regionu - Almeríe. K dispozici je nejdelší pláž na pobřeží Costa de Almería dlouhá téměř 12 km. Podél pláže se táhne pobřežní promenáda s mnoha hotely, bary a půjčovnami příslušenství pro vodní sporty. Aguadulce   Oblast v blízkosti Roquetas de Mar, bývalá rybářská vesnice, která se vyvinula v oblíbené turistické letovisko s mnoha hotely, restauracemi, bary a obchody. Milovníkům zábavy a nočního života je zde k dispozici široká škála klubů a diskoték, kde trvá zábava až do rána.

Výlety po okolí

Granada a magická Alhambra Jedno ze španělských přísloví říká: „Kdo neviděl Granadu, ten nic neviděl“. Návštěva centra města s goticko-renesanční katedrálou, chvíle volného času na procházku klikatými uličkami starého města nebo nákup suvenýrů. Na závěr návštěva Alhambry. Alhambra je opevněný palácový komplex ze 13. století, považovaný za mistrovské dílo arabské architektury a památka zapsaná na seznamu UNESCO, kterou každoročně navštěvují miliony turistů. Zahalená mnoha tajemstvími a neobvyklými příběhy je povinným bodem k návštěvě na mapě Andalusie. Cena cca 75 EUR/dospělá osoba, cca 56 EUR/dítě do 12 let.

Alpujarras - bílé vesnice Andalusie Nádherné výhledy, mimořádná krajina a nezapomenutelné chutě - to jsou jen některé z výhod tohoto výletu. Procházka několika místními vesnicemi a poznávání klidného a blaženého života jejich obyvatel. Návštěva sušárny šunky jamon serrano a iberico v Trevelezu, ochutnávka andaluské čokolády v Pampaneira a procházka po Lanjarónu, jehož vizitkou jsou malé fontány s pitnou pramenitou vodou roztroušeny po ulicích a náměstích. Cena cca 45 EUR/dospělá osoba, cca 33 EUR/dítě do 12 let.

Sierra Nevada a troglodytové jeskyně Sierra Nevada je jedním z nejkrásnějších horských pásem v Evropě s nejvyšším vrcholem Pyrenejského poloostrova - Mulhacen 3478 m n. m. Je to také biosférická rezervace nacházející se na seznamu UNESCO. Návštěva města Guadix známého díky bydlení v jeskyních. V současné době je obývaných cca 2000 jeskyní, což vytváří úžasnou troglodytovou krajinu. Po návštěvě volný čas na oběd (za příplatek) a na návštěvu katedrály ze 16. století nebo za nákup suvenýrů. Následně návštěva Alhabia, kde navštívíme keramickou továrnu a vinici Laujar. Cena cca 41 EUR/dospělá osoba, cca 31 EUR/dítě do 12 let. Gibraltar Odjezd od jednotlivých hotelů ve směru Gibraltaru, délka cesty cca 5,5 - 6 hodin jedním směrem. Gibraltar je poloostrovem s délkou pouhých 6 km - malou britskou enklávou na Pyrenejském poloostrově. V programu: makaky - opice, které se usadily na Gibraltarské skále, jeskyně San Miguel, Main Street. Nádherný výhled na Afriku a bezcelní zóna - to jsou další výhody mysu. Cena cca 90 EUR/dospělá osoba, cca 67 EUR/dítě do 12 let. Vezměte si s sebou pas nebo průkaz totožnosti.

Prohlídky Almeria - město na úpatí Betických hor V pobřežním městě Almeria je mnoho památek: Alcazaba - impozantní opevnění (jedno z největších v Andalusii) postavené v roce 955, San Cristóbal - pevnost z 11. století s kaplí postavenou Templáři, kaple de San Juan nebo radnice z 19. století.

Hrad v Roquetas de Mar - Castillo de Santa Ana Ze střechy hradu se rozprostírá krásné panorama města a moře. Ve zdejším muzeu se lze dozvědět o historii města (vstup zdarma). Svatá Anna je patronkou Roquetas de Mar, proto také v červenci, v den jejího svátku, se zde koná celý týden velká fiesta.

Plaza de toros v Roquetas de Mar Místo každoroční corridy během prázdnin v Roquetas de Mar (v polovině července). Jediná příležitost vidět vzrušující býčí zápasy.

S dětmi Mini Hollywood a zoologická zahrada Celodenní výlet do Tabernasu - malého městečka na okraji jediné pouště v Evropě. Místní, neobvyklá krajina typická pro americký divoký západ byla scenérií pro mnoho westernů natočených v šedesátých letech. Na účastníky výletu čekají ukázky zručnosti kovbojů a indiánů, návštěvu salonku, banky, vězení nebo šerifovy kanceláře a mnoho dalších zajímavostí. V areálu parku se nachází také zoologická rezervace a pro nejmenší mini zoo. Cena cca 50 EUR/dospělá osoba, cca 37,5 EUR/dítě do 12 let. Potápění se žraloky v akváriu Roquetas! Akvárium o rozloze 3000 m² je zaplněno až 2 miliony litrů vody! Lze zde obdivovat nejrůznější druhy ryb, včetně mořských koníků! Pro odvážné potápění se žraloky. Konají se zde také ukázky krmení rejnoků a žraloků.

Čas na zábavu ve vodním městečku! V Mario Parku v Roquetas de Mar najdete mnoho skluzavek různé obtížnosti. V parku je mnoho barů a restaurací. Celodenní zábava pro celou rodinu zaručena!

Odpočinek Nakupování v Gran Plaza Milovníci nakupování se určitě vydají do nákupního centra Gran Plaza v Roquetas de Mar. Známé značky za nízké ceny. Navíc se ve čtvrtek před hotelem Gran Plaza koná trh všeho - od ovoce a zeleniny až po oblečení a starožitnosti. Arena 501 Zábavní centrum v Aquadulce, kde se nachází mnoho hospod, diskoték a taveren. Ideální místo pro všechny, kteří hledají noční život.

Přírodní park Cabo da Gata - Nijar Nejdelší pás Andaluského pobřeží  pod ochranou je známý díky četným sopečným skalním útvarům a pouštnímu klimatu. Četné zátoky a divoké pláže, stejně jako bílá města jsou také vizitkou parku. Cena cca 40 EUR/dospělá osoba, cca 30 EUR/dítě do 12 let.

Hlavní turistická sezóna je ve Španělsku obvykle od 1.7. do 31.8.
