rack and pinion replacement (How to)

Anybody replace the rack and pinion on the 06 G6?  

Yes, I did so as mentioned in my clutch and suspension overhaul thread. You can likely discount any notion of saving steering tie rod ends, as the nuts are virtually impossible to cut from where they fasten to the hub. Just cut the tie rod end nuts off with an angle grinder and replace with new. That will save yourself a lot of time. The power steering lines securing bolt is a little difficult to get to where it secures to the steering rack. Same for the pinch bolt that fastens the steering wheel intermediate shaft to the steering rack. Buts its all possible to access without removing other hardware. Take your time. That steering rack pinch but can be retorqued with a long extender. Worst part was removing what was left of the tie rod ends from the steering rack, prior to shipping the core off. I didn't have cheaters big enough and had a friendly shop remove them.  

Wow, if that doesn't sound like a ball buster...lol Now lets be honest here, with your average garage guy here, do you think this job is possible? This will be floor work for me, no lift! Jacks and jack stands for this project! What was your line of tools for this beating we're talking about? Not trying to be difficult, just trying to get a good feel of what I am getting myself into and making sure I have the right tools for it! I mean I guess the tools that are gonna be required aren't gonna match up against the labor bill if I was to throw it in the shop...lol besides im always up for a challenge. Also, what was the reason u did the swap anyways? I'm getting a lot of rattling/clunking or just sounds loose under the front end every time when I go over bumpy road way, uneven pavement or such in the city, highway I got a lot rattling/shaking in my steering column, and its more then a sign of unbalanced tires as well, but if I turn slightly left it goes away. What do u think?  

The sway bar links are likely culprits for clunking noises. The link joints are pretty light duty. They are also easy to replace. The usual cause for replacing the steering rack is fluid leakage. For cars ~ 6+ years old, other suspension components including the subframe bushings can contribute to noises and unsteadiness. See my topic on clutch and suspension overhaul in the same forum. If cash, space and time are a constraint, try to tackle low hanging fruit first, including any unwanted wriggle in the sway bar links or steering tie rod ends, for noise/loose steering remedy. Rattling in the steering column seems to require a repair identified in a GM maintenance notice. Steering column rattlle is different from the vibration resulting from unbalanced tires. I would suggest to anyone with one of these cars, to take it to a good shop for a proper evaluation before they start piece-meal repairs. The suspension components are not likely to tolerate very high mileage usage. You should know the status of your suspension/steering system before you begin to spend money on parts or repairs.  

Well said my friend, big help! Look for wiggle in sway bar links, what about steering tie rod ends, how do I inspect those?? Now for the steering rack, no leaks! I was just something I heard that could be a problem, but my car is 7 years old:eek Now how do I inspect  

Quick question for you guys.. Are my drive axles suppose to have any play in them? I can move them a tad bit back & forward!  

The drive axles should be secured in the diff so not to easily move in or out of the diff. There should be no axial or lateral play in either axle. There is nothing special about the architecture of any g6 drivetrain. A competent mechanic should be able diagnose the condition of the suspension and drivetrain. His knowledge should actually save you money, even if you do the labor on your own. My 27 year old Porsche 928 has original suspension members and bushings and aligns perfectly. Our G6s are not Porsches and I have first hand knowledge of both mechanicals. If your G6 has anywhere near 60k or above miles, it's time to have the axles and suspension inspected by a qualified mechanic.  

Gearhead, did you ever get this issue resolved? Just curious because I am having similar issues to you.  

Hey guys I’m in the process of removing my rack and pinion and I just removed the pinch bolt that connects the steering column to the Rack and pinion, I cannot remove the steering column from the rack and pinion even though the punch bolt is gone it seems like something else is holding it. Does anyone know what this is by chance?

Aibga Ridge

This spectacular mountain ridge stretches for 23 kilometers and has the Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort nestled at its feet. Save a day or two to explore the ridge, full of rapid rivers, alpine meadows and waterfalls.

Akhshtyrskaya Cave
