The U.S. government requires all guests to be in possession of proof of citizenship when sailing on any cruise. Because these regulations are subject to change, we encourage you to visit www.travel.state.gov for the latest requirements and information before you sail.

The following regulations are currently in effect.

AIR TRAVEL – FOR U.S. AND CANADIAN CITIZENS:

For all air travel into the U.S. from Canada or any other international location, you’ll need a valid passport. For air travel to everywhere but North America the passport must be valid for at least 6-months following your trip.

AIR AND CRUISE TRAVEL – FOR ALL CITIZENS OTHER THAN U.S. OR CANADIAN:

All guests must carry a valid passport (valid at least 6 months from the departure date from the U.S.), and if necessary, a multiple entry visa is required for entry into the United States (B-2 Visitors Visa), or a visa waiver. Please be sure to check with the proper agencies and authorities (such as your local immigration office) before you sail because we can’t board you without the proper documents.

CRUISING – FOR U.S. AND CANADIAN CITIZENS;

Caribbean, Bahamas, Bermuda, Alaska, Mexican Riviera, Or Canada & New England Cruises You will need proof of citizenship and a government-issued photo I.D. or a valid driver’s license with a photo. Proof of Citizenship examples include: an original or state certified copy of a U.S. or Canadian birth certificate, a valid or recently expired passport, certificate of naturalization, certificate of citizenship, or a report of your birth abroad.

Best Cruises strongly recommends that all guests travel with a valid passport during their cruise. If you miss your ship at its scheduled U.S. departure port and need to travel outside the U.S. to meet your ship, or should you unexpectedly need to depart the ship from a foreign port prior to the end of sailing, a passport would be required to leave or re-enter the U.S. by air.

U.S. Resident Aliens – Require a valid up-to-date Alien Resident Card.

Hawaii Cruises Inter-island Cruising. There’s no need for a passport when you sail on any NCL America inter-island cruise. So if your ship never sails beyond the islands of Hawaii, all you need is a government-issued photo I.D. or a valid driver’s license with a photo.

Fanning Island Itineraries. If your particular cruise calls on Fanning Island in the Republic of Kiribati, you are leaving the United States and a valid passport is required.

Europe, South America and Asian Cruises A valid passport valid for six months from the return date of travel, a tourist visa may also be required.

FOR ALL CRUISE LINE GUESTS:

U.S. regulations pertaining to required travel documents are updated frequently. The information provided here is meant to offer some guidelines for travel, but please note that these details may not be complete. To be sure you have the latest information, check with your agent or the proper authorities (such as your local immigration office) before your cruise to make sure you have the proper documentation. Cruise refunds may not be issued if you’re denied boarding due to lack of proper documents.

BEST CRUISES STRONGLY RECOMMENDS THAT ALL GUESTS OBTAIN AND TRAVEL WITH A U.S. PASSPORT

Special Announcement

The Canadian government has made the decision to extend the interim order that prohibits cruise ships from sailing in its waters and calling on Canadian ports through February 2022.

Unfortunately, this means that all 2021 Alaska sailings beginning or ending in Vancouver have been cancelled.

We will update this page as new information becomes available.

We remain committed to supporting our clients through these changes and encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Note that Alaska Land Only vacations are not affected by this decision.

princess cruise visa requirements

Passport books are required for all travelers, including citizens of the U.S. and Canada, who enter or re-enter the U.S. by air, land or sea .

There are a few notable exceptions pertaining to land and sea border crossings:

  • U.S. citizens on cruises that begin and end in the same U.S. port and travel to destinations in Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, the Bahamas or Bermuda are able to re-enter the U.S. with proof of citizenship other than a passport or passport card. Acceptable proof of citizenship includes a U.S. state-issued original or certified copy of their birth certificate (hospital certificates are not acceptable) or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization and a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license). Passports are required for cruises that begin in one U.S. port and end in another.

A valid passport book is required  for all international Princess itineraries including:

  • Australia & New Zealand
  • Central and South America
  • Panama Canal (partial and full transit)
  • Caribbean (any sailings that visit Martinique or Guadeloupe)
  • South Pacific & Tahiti
  • World Cruises

On select U.S. roundtrip (sometimes called “closed-loop”) voyages, U.S. citizens ages 16 and above may also travel with an original or certified copy U.S. birth certificate (or U.S. Certificate of Naturalization if foreign born) presented together with a valid U.S. government-issued photo identification. U.S. and Canadian citizens ages 15 and younger may travel with a birth certificate.

  • Alaska roundtrip from San Francisco, Los Angeles or Seattle (roundtrip Seattle cruisetours excluded)
  • Canada/New England roundtrip from New York
  • Caribbean roundtrip from Ft. Lauderdale^, Galveston^ or New York (voyages that do  not  call to Martinque or Guadeloupe only)
  • Hawaii roundtrip from Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, or Seattle
  • Mexico roundtrip from Los Angeles, San Francisco or San Diego

^Voyages that call to Central or South America are excluded and only passports are accepted. All voyages that call to Martinique or Guadeloupe require a passport.

  • When minors are traveling with only one adult, Princess requires that all passengers have a valid passport.
  • A new, lower-cost alternative to the passport, called a passport card, is acceptable for entries into the U.S. by land or sea from Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Mexico or within the United States. The passport card is not acceptable for air travel.

Photocopies of required documentation are not acceptable in any circumstance.

Even though passports are not required at this time for U.S. citizens who sail on cruises to the above destinations that begin and end in the same U.S. port, we strongly recommend that all cruise passengers travel with a valid passport anyway. This is because guests who need to fly to or from the U.S. unexpectedly during their cruise will likely experience significant delays and complications related to booking airline tickets and entering the U.S. if they do not have a valid passport with them. For example, a passenger missing a cruise departure due to a late inbound flight to Miami would need a passport to fly to meet the ship at the next port. Similarly, guests needing to fly to or through the U.S. before their cruise ends because of medical, family, personal or business emergencies, missing a ship's departure from a port of call, or a mechanical problem of some sort with the ship, would need a passport. Of course, situations like these are rare, but they can happen.

Passports are not required for U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from Hawaii or a U.S. territory, including Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Passports are required for cruise travel to all International destinations not mentioned above, and for cruises that involve air travel that begins or ends outside of the U.S. Passports must be valid for at least six months after the last day of travel.

Vacations To Go has partnered with CIBT, the largest and most well-established travel visa and passport company in the world, to offer you a fast, easy and reliable way to obtain a passport or other document for travel anywhere in the world. For information about obtaining a passport or passport card for the first time, or about renewing a passport or passport card, click here to visit the CIBT Web site.

Legal U.S. Residents (Non-Citizens)

Legal permanent residents of the U.S. must have a valid passport from their country of citizenship and a valid Alien Registration Card (Green Card) to enter or re-enter the U.S.

Non-U.S., Non-Canada Citizens

The following countries participate in a visa waiver program with the U.S., and citizens of these countries must have a machine-readable passport for entry into the U.S.:

Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom

Citizens of the countries listed above who do not possess machine-readable passports, and citizens of countries not listed above must present a valid passport and a valid United States visa upon entry into the U.S. For those whose travel plans include multiple entries into the U.S., such as a cruise that begins and ends in a U.S. port, a multiple-entry visa is required.

All travelers, including U.S. and Canada citizens , are responsible for verifying visa requirements with consular officials, and obtaining visas where required, for every country visited during their trip, including countries visited via connecting flights.

Always check with your Vacations To Go cruise counselor at the time of booking to verify the documentation requirements for your vacation.

Entry requirements

Please make sure that you meet the entry requirements for each port visited during your cruise. Furthermore, we ask you to note the entry requirement of the United States.

Entry requirements for the United States:

US visa waiver program

German, Austrian and Swiss residents take part in the visa waiver program and are allowed to stay in the United States for tourism, business or transit for up to 90 days without obtaining a visa, if they:

  • are in possession of a valid passport (see list below)
  • are travelling on an approved carrier if arriving by air or sea
  • can produce a return or onward ticket (the voyage must not end in Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean except for permanent residents of these countries) whicht must be valid for a maximum period of 90 days from the first entry to the United States
  • have received an authorisation to travel through the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA, see information below)

It is also allowed to arrive from Canada or Mexixo via land ports of entry. In this case, return or onward tickets and Esta authorisation are not required.

Meeting the requirements of the visa waiver programm does not necessarily guarantee admission into the United States since the final decision is taken by an immigration officer.

Passengers who do not meet the requirements or who want to travel to the United States for other purposes not allowed on a visitor visa have to apply for a visa, for example if they:

  • want to work in the United States (also au-pairs and journalists)
  • want to study in the United States (also language schools)
  • take part in an exchange program
  • take part in a research project
  • want to marry and live in the United States
  • travel to the United States by not approved carriers (sailors, pilots)
  • didn´t get an Esta authorisation (see information below)

An electronic travel authorisation must be applied for at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/ . In addition, the dates of birth must be submitted to the airline. Guests who have stayed in Cuba after January 2021 require a visa to be applied for at the embassy.  Dual nationals who also have the citizenship of Iran, Iraq, Syria or Sudan, as well as travellers who have stayed in Iran, Iraq, Syria or Sudan after 01.03.2011, also require a visa to be applied for at the embassy. ESTA is also required for transit, i.e. as soon as you enter the USA. Also for e.g. stopover and direct onward flight to a third country (e.g. flights to Papeete).

The visa must be applied for at the respective U.S. embassy or consulate.

In the case of visa-free entry, the actual length of stay will be determined by an immigration officer. An extension of the period of stay is not permitted, not even if your departure has been delayed by unforeseen circumstances. If you are holding a regular visa, you can ask for an extension at each office of the BCIS. The latest day of departure will be stamped to your passport (“admitted until xx-xx-xx”. Please note: the american date format puts the month first, then the day. So 3-10 means 10 March, not 3 October!)

Travel documents / Visa All passengers including children of all ages need their indivudual travel documents. The travel document must be valid for the entire period of stay (at least until the day of departure from the United States).

With the following travel documents, Swiss residents are permitted visa-free entry into the United States under the visa waiver program :

Rule: For visa-free entry into the United States under the visa waiver program, a regular (maroon) German passport (machine-readable passports issued before 01 November 2005 as well as machine-readable passports with integrated chips issued since 01 November 2005) or children´s passports with photo issued or extended before 26 October 2006 will be required.

A temporary (green) passport with a maximum duration of one year or a children´s passport issued or extended since 26 October 2006 will not be sufficient for entry into the United States. In these cases, a visa will be required.

Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) Since 12 January 2009, all passengers travelling to the United States under the visa waiver program (VWP) have to apply for a free entry permit from the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) online at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov . A request by a third party (for example a travel agency) is possible. The authorization is valid for any number of entries within a period of 2 years.

Only in the following special cases, a new authorization has to be applied for before the end of the two-year period:

  • Change of passport
  • Change of name
  • Change of citizenship
  • Change of sex
  • Change of answers to questions in the ESTA-form answerable with “yes” or “no” (see ESTA-website).

Please note that an ESTA authorization (or a formal visa) does not necessarily guarantee admition into the United States since final admission eligibility is determined at U.S. ports by an immigration officer.

The Department of Homeland Security points out that the ESTA offers more security for travellers since they can fill out the form in advance. Before, they had to fill out a similar form on entry into the United States, resulting in the danger of being rejected at the border and sent back. Now, travellers not meeting the criteria of the visa waiver program will not take up their journey at all.

Important note: When entering ESTA into your search engine, you will get a lot of commercial results looking like official sites at the first glance but offering downloads for money. Therefore, we recommend to type the official link https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov directly into the address bar of your browser. The information of this official site is available in different languages. The use of ESTA is free of charge .

Should you have made a mistake, the Department of Homeland Security recommends to fill out a new form with the correct data. The original form will then be overwritten. You will find more answers to this and other questions when following the link on the bottom of the ESTA homepage.

How to Apply for a Cruise Visa

princess cruise visa requirements

International travel involves a host of confusing issues when it comes to the documentation needed to enter and depart foreign countries. In addition to a valid passport, some countries require tourist or visitor visas that may involve an application process and fee. Factor in that you will arrive by cruise ship (which may be covered under different rules in some cases) and it can all become quite complicated. The first step is always research, and we've done a bit of that to help get you started. Here's some basic information on whether you need a visa for your cruise, and how to apply for one.

Do I Need a Visa on My Cruise?

It depends. For North Americans, many popular cruise destinations -- such as the Eastern and Western Caribbean, Alaska and Western Mediterranean -- do not require visas. But ships that call on more exotic destinations might include visits to a country where you'd need a visa to enter. In addition, there are some destinations where independent travelers need a visa, but cruise travelers or cruise travelers on licensed tours do not.

How do you know which countries have which rules? You might think to ask your cruise line, but they are not always the most helpful. Many cruise lines post information on their website and in the cruise documents about whether you need a visa on your specific cruise. But they follow up with fine print that indicates that it is not their responsibility to provide visas for passengers or to offer advice regarding such matters (even though they've just done so). Essentially, the lines give "tips," but are quick to acknowledge that you should never rely solely on those tips.

The Cruise Critic message boards are a fantastic resource for asking fellow cruisers if they needed visas on their cruises to the same destinations you're visiting. You can often learn details about the visa process in specific ports through firsthand accounts from those who have recently been there.

But when it comes to visas, it is best to stick with the adage, "Trust, but verify."

U.S. citizens can easily look up visa requirements at Travel.State.gov under the "International Travel" tab. Search for each country your ship will visit to see the visa requirements along with a wealth of other information. The tourist visa requirement is displayed in the "Quick Facts" box at the top of the page. Scroll down a little to the specific section for "Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements," which will have details, sometimes including additional information specifically for cruise passengers. Canadian citizens can use a similar site: Travel.gc.ca .

It is important that you have a valid visa for all ports of call that require them, even if you do not plan to disembark. Emergencies, either yours or the ship's, could force a situation that would make a visa unexpectedly necessary.

How Do I Get a Cruise Visa?

Once you determine that you need one or more visas for your cruise, the next step is getting them. There are relatively few countries where the cruise line will assist passengers in obtaining the necessary visa prior to arrival. You can usually find this information by searching your cruise line's website for the country name and the word "visa" or by calling the cruise line directly.

There are two main ways to obtain a visa. Apply directly with the country by going through its consulate, or by using a third-party visa service. Both the U.S. and Canadian government sites provide links to the appropriate websites for visa application forms for countries that require them. Your travel agent may also be able to assist you.

Tips for Applying for a Visa for Your Cruise

1. Read Everything

You can save yourself a lot of headaches by first thoroughly reading all the information on your cruise line's website specific to your cruise itinerary, and then on your home country's website. Taken together, you should get a clear explanation of the rules plus information regarding possible visa exceptions for cruisers.

Russia is a good example of a country with cruise visa exceptions. On the State Department's page of detailed visa requirements for visiting Russia, you will find the link to the application forms in the first paragraph along with the assurance that "Russian authorities strictly enforce visa and immigration laws." With that stern admonition, it is tempting to click the link and get on with filling out the forms on the Russian site, but by reading further on the State Department's site, you learn that cruise passengers can stay up to 72 hours in St. Petersburg or Vladivostok if they are accompanied by a licensed tour operator.

That means that if you will be touring with the ship or a licensed guide, you won't need a tourist visa at all. If you plan to venture out on your own, you will need to apply for the visa.

2. Consult Your Travel Agent

A good travel agent with experience both traveling on cruise ships and booking them for travelers can usually provide the information you need regarding which countries require visas, how much you should expect to pay and where to get them. Some even provide the service for their clients for a fee.

3. Compare Services

Use a commercial visa service only after checking the official website of the country you'll be visiting. That way you will have a clear picture of whether you can manage the application on your own. You will also see the direct price charged by the consulate compared to what the third-party visa service charges.

A good example is Brazil. Obtaining tourist visas from Brazil used to be a challenging proposition and using a visa service was highly recommended. With the addition of e-visas for U.S. citizens, the process is easily accomplished online with a minimum amount of technical skill, and the fee charged by the consulate is less than half what a visa service will charge you.

4. Plan Ahead

Most cruise visas can be obtained in less than a week, but it is best to start the process as soon as your cruise is booked. Some countries require photos, even for e-visas. Others may only send visas by mail. To avoid last-minute frantic rushes and fees for expedited services, the ideal time to research and apply for visas is shortly after your cruise is booked.

Cool Cruiser

Ok, now I'm confused. DW and I are booked on Med cruise on the Royal this September. We are both US passport holders. Today I get an email advising us of visa requirements and multiple entry visa requirements for Schengen and non Schengen countries. I didn't think any visa requirements applied to US passport holders, but the wording in the email was a bit confusing. My question is, do we need to be concerned about visas or not? Since we're less than 90 days until sail away, if visas are necessary I need to get busy policing them up.

Thanks, Don

For the Med, your US passport is good, no visas required. Enjoy your cruise, the Med is awesome!

Hope this link will help https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/go/schengen-fact-sheet.html

You say the area you would be visiting would be the Med. OK a lot of the countries would be covered by schengen but if you are going to say Turkey or Israel then use your search engine to check it out. Enjoy.:)

We have never had to get a visa for the Med. Our US passports were all we needed

10,000+ Club

Read the information carefully again. I think you will find that no visas are required for U.S. Passport holders.

Just finished 21days on the Med including turkey, you do not need a visa except to charge your purchases. Oh that's a different kind of Visa. LOL.

When we cruised in the Med, we were not responsible for any visas. Princess took care of getting short term visas for Turkey, maybe Egypt as well. We were given a 'ticket stub' that we had to keep in our possession (could have been asked to produce it at any time), and then turn back in when we returned to the ship. Extremely easy.

We got the same email. As noted earlier by sknight this does not apply to US passport holders. See bolded part below:

As a reminder, you will be visiting countries which are member of the Schengen Agreement. Schengen Agreement countries require passport holders from various countries to obtain a visa in advance. This requirement does not apply to Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, UK, or U.S. passport holders. A multiple entry visa will be required if a non-Schengen country is visited between visits to Schengen countries (Example: depart from Italy, visit Turkey, arrive in Greece). Schengen Agreement countries include: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Thanks all! I appreciate your responses!

Q:  What if my spouse gets COVID-19 right before the cruise and we can no longer sail? A:  You will be eligible to file a claim for a cash refund if you, your traveling companion or a member of your immediate family is diagnosed and treated for COVID-19, which causes you to cancel your cruise.

Q:  What if my mother, who isn’t sailing with us, gets COVID-19, and we may have been exposed? A:  Princess Vacation Protection has you covered! Even if they are not traveling with you, if someone in your immediate family is diagnosed and treated for an illness, you may request a refund to the original form of payment. If they are ill but are not diagnosed or treated, you may call us and receive a Future Cruise Credit for the cruise fare.

A:  PVP provides reimbursement for the days you are confined to your cabin if the confinement is ordered by a medical professional.

Q:  Does PVP cover my medical expenses if I get COVID-19 during my cruise? A:  Yes, PVP provides reimbursement for eligible medical expenses for any illness, including COVID-19.

Q:  What if I want to cancel my PVP coverage? How does that work? A:  PVP is refundable until final payment is due. For new bookings made within final payment, the PVP plan cost is only refundable within 10 days of purchase provided the person hasn't departed on the trip nor filed a claim.

Q:  Am I protected by my Princess Vacation Protection plan if my mother, who is not traveling with me, develops pneumonia and I have to cancel my trip to care for her? A:  Yes! Princess Vacation Protection provides reimbursement for conditions that are stable during the 60-days prior to purchase, so if you have had no changes in your health (even if you are on continuous unchanged medication), you would be protected.

Q:  What if my condition did change prior to purchasing Princess Vacation Protection? A:  Rest assured, emergency evacuation benefits are still provided in the event of a medical emergency. Also, if you cancel your cruise vacation and do not qualify for cash reimbursement due to an unstable medical condition prior to purchase, you will have the benefit of cancel-for-any-reason protection from Princess.

Q:  If my pet becomes ill and I have to cancel my trip as a result, will Princess Vacation Protection reimburse me? This benefit is provided by Princess Cruises and/or Princess Tours.

There isn’t much reason to get this clunker of a card, as a general travel rewards card will give you significantly more benefits.

About the Princess Cruises Card

If you’re considering the Princess Cruises® Rewards Visa® Card * The information for the Princess Cruises® Rewards Visa® Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. know that even frequent Princess Cruisers are better off with a different credit card. Consider the rewards rate: 2 points per $1 spent on all Princess Cruises purchases including onboard purchases and 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases. That’s pretty skimpy, even for a no-annual-fee card but redemptions aren’t much better. You can only cash in your rewards for statement credits for purchases you’ve already made, and the redemption system is so knotty even an experienced rewards maximizer will likely find it’s not worth the effort.

There is a welcome offer and an intro APR offer, but even those are not enticing. The welcome offer allows you to earn 10,000 points after spending $500 on purchases within the first 90 days of account opening. There’s a 0% intro APR on balance transfers for the first 15 billing cycles following each balance transfer that posts within 45 days of account opening. After, a 20.24%, 26.24%, or 30.24% variable APR will apply on both purchases and balance transfers. A balance transfer fee of either $5 or 5% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater, applies.

Apart from that, there aren’t many perks that cruisers will find valuable with the Princess Cruises Rewards Visa. The best travel rewards cards will give you a higher earn rate, redemption rate, comprehensive insurance coverage and other benefits you will appreciate.

  • No annual fee or foreign transaction fees: More of your budget can go toward cruising when you don’t tack on an annual fee or foreign transaction fees .
  • Low intro APR offer on balance transfers : If you wish to make a balance transfer, you can take advantage of the card’s low intro APR offer, which can help you reduce your debt.
  • Flexible redemptions : You can redeem your rewards as statement credits for qualifying airfare or for multiple cruise lines, not just Princess Cruises.
  • No cruise-specific perks: There are no Princess Cruises benefits with this card. Most cobranded credit cards offer some perks within the brand.
  • Complex redemption structure : If you want to maximize the value of your rewards, you will have to do a lot of calculating, as value depends on the amount of statement credits you wish to redeem.
  • Intro APR only extends to balance transfers : There’s no intro APR offer on purchases, which means you can’t use this card to finance your cruise.
  • Low rewards rate : You can easily earn more rewards with a different card.

Princess Cruises Card rewards

The current welcome offer allows you to earn 10,000 points after spending $500 on purchases within the first 90 days of account opening.

Using government data and other publicly available information, we estimate that a household in the U.S. that would be in the market for this card has around $25,087 in annual expenses that can be charged to a credit card. Here’s how our sample household’s rewards could break down:

The cardholder in this example earns a grand total of 25,972 rewards points annually, which is worth $259.72 if redeemed as a statement credit toward Princess Cruises or other eligible purchases.

The most confusing part of the Princess Cruises Card is redeeming your rewards. You can redeem your rewards for statement credits, onboard amenities, gift cards, merchandise or on travel. Redemptions start at 3,300 points for $25. If you are redeeming your rewards for statement credits for purchases from airlines or from World’s Leading Cruise Line brands, your valuation is 1%.

If you wish to use your rewards on statement credits toward Princess Cruises purchases within the last 180 days, the valuation you receive will depend on the amount you want to redeem:

  • $50 to $499.99 will have a redemption value of 1%.
  • $500 to $2,000 will have a redemption value of 1.25%.
  • $2,001 to $4,000 will have a redemption value of 1.50%.
  • $4,001 and up will have a redemption value of 2.00%.

Reward redemptions for statement credits start at 5,000 points for $50. The confusing redemption structure and the low point valuation alone are potential reasons to look elsewhere for a credit card.

How the Princess Cruises Rewards Visa Card compares to other travel credit cards

Princess cruises rewards visa card vs. chase sapphire preferred® card.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is one of the top travel credit cards on the market, and for good reason. For a $95 annual fee, cardholders earn 5 points per $1 on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, 3 points per $1 on dining, select streaming services, and online grocery purchases (excluding Walmart, Target and wholesale clubs), 2 points per $1 on all other travel purchases and 1 point per $1 on all other purchases. These points can be redeemed on travel purchases booked via the Chase Travel℠ portal for 1.25 cents per point or transferred to several travel partners for a better valuation.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred also comes with an up to $50 statement credit each account anniversary year towards hotel stays booked through Chase Travel, an anniversary points bonus equal to 10% of your total purchases made the previous year, a suite of travel protections and insurances and a far more straightforward – and valuable – rewards structure.

Wondering if the Chase Sapphire Preferred is worth the annual fee? Here’s how to get maximum value from the card’s benefits.

If you don’t want to pay an annual fee, the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card * The information for the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. Cardholders earn an unlimited 3% cash back on dining, entertainment, popular streaming services and grocery stores (excluding superstores like Walmart and Target), 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, 8% cash back on Capital One Entertainment purchases and 1% on all other purchases. Earning cash back on these expenses is likely to yield better returns than what you’d get with the Princess Cruises Card and you aren’t limited to only redeeming your rewards as a statement credit.

The card also comes with a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months, then a 19.99% to 29.99% variable APR. There is a 3% fee on each balance transfer in the first 15 months but no fee for amounts transferred at the purchase APR after the first 15 months. Finally, you’ll get some protections with the SavorOne card including travel accident insurance, extended warranty coverage and more. Overall, it’s a better choice than the Princess card.

Princess Cruises Rewards Visa Card vs. Disney® Premier Visa® Card * The information for the Disney® Premier Visa® Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

If you love the idea of a cruise-centered credit card, the Disney® Premier Visa® Card * The information for the Disney® Premier Visa® Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. has you covered. It’s great for families, as you can use your points for Disney Vacations at theme parks, resorts and cruises. The card earns 5% in Disney Rewards Dollars on purchases made directly at DisneyPlus.com, Hulu.com or ESPNPlus.com, 2% in Disney Rewards Dollars on purchases at gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants and most Disney U.S. locations and 1% on all other card purchases. Perhaps the most enticing part of the card is the promotional APR offer on Disney Vacation packages, which is perfect for planning your next cruise. With this card you’ll get a 0% intro APR on purchases for 6 months on select Disney vacation packages, then a standard 19.24% to 28.24% variable APR on purchases and balance transfers applies. A balance transfer fee of either $5 or 5% of each transfer, whichever is greater, applies.

The Disney Premier Visa Card has an annual fee of $49 and a welcome bonus of a $300 statement credit after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening. You can still do better than the Disney Premier Visa regarding earnings on everyday spending. However, if you want to earn rewards towards a Disney cruise or other Disney-fied option, this is a decent choice.

Should you get the Princess Cruises Rewards Visa Card?

The Princess Cruises Rewards Visa comes up short as a rewards card. Even if your travel budget is exclusively reserved for Princess Cruises, you are better off with a different credit card. Choose one that allows you to earn better rewards at a higher value. A general travel rewards card would also allow you to transfer your points to multiple airline and hotel partners, giving you more versatile options. Even a 2% cash-back card would be a better and simpler option than this one.

Princess Cruises Rewards Visa Card summary

Visa Requirements For Cruise Ship Passengers (UK Citizens)

This post may contain affiliate links. if you click one, i may earn a commission at no cost to you. as an amazon associate, i earn from qualifying purchases..

Visa requirements for cruise holidays can be pretty complicated. You’ll probably be visiting several different countries during your cruise, and the visa rules for cruise passengers are sometimes different than for people who are arriving by land or transiting through airports.

visa form

This guide to the visa requirements for British passport holders will show you what visas you need for your cruise and how to obtain them.

Visa requirements can change at any time. It’s recommended that you check the visa requirements for every country that you’ll enter during your cruise on the UK government website .

Do UK Cruise Ship Passengers Need Visas?

UK passport holders may require a visa when visiting certain destinations on a cruise ship. Even if you do not get off the ship, you may still need a visa to be allowed to embark. It’s important to check the visa requirements for each country carefully.

So, here’s an overview of the visa requirements for each country at the time of writing, as well as where you can go to get the latest information…

USA Cruises

UK citizens travelling to or transiting through the United States for a cruise must obtain an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) before arrival. As the United Kingdom is part of the USA’s Visa Waiver Program, a full visa isn’t needed, but UK passport holders must obtain an ESTA for cruises that involve entry into the US.

If you plan to be in the United States at all, even very briefly, then you need an ESTA. You will need an Esta for transiting through the United States to reach your cruise departure port even if you don’t leave the airport.

There’s a really useful video with more information about the ESTA here and more advice on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website .

Alaska Cruises

As Alaska is part of the United States of America, UK citizens travelling to Alaska on a cruise must obtain an ESTA. The United Kingdom is part of the USA’s Visa Waiver Program, so a full visa isn’t needed, but UK passport holders must obtain an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) before arrival.

Bahamas Cruises

British citizens do not need a visa to travel to the Bahamas. However, if your visit the United States at any point during your cruise holiday, including transiting through a US airport, then you must obtain an ESTA before travel.

Bermuda Cruises

British passport holders do not need a visa to enter Bermuda on a cruise. However, if you plan to visit the United States at any point then you must obtain an ESTA for entry into the US.

Canada Cruises

UK citizens flying into Canada must obtain an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization). However, if you arrive at a Canadian port by cruise ship then an eTA or visa is not usually required.

You can check the latest Canadian visa requirements on the Government of Canada website .

Caribbean Cruises

UK citizens don’t usually require a visa for a Caribbean cruise. However, if you fly via the US or visit any US ports of call during your cruise then you will require an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization).

Cuba Cruises

British tourists entering Cuba must obtain a tourist card. This is a paper card that you must keep with your passport. US law prevents anyone from travelling directly from the United States to Cuba for tourism purposes.

You can apply for a Cuba visa online via your travel agent or contact the Cuban Embassy for more information.

Mexico Cruises

Citizens of the United Kingdom can enter Mexico without a visa. If travelling to Mexico on a cruise ship, you must only visit the surrounding area and must leave on the same ship to continue the journey.

Cambodia Cruises

UK citizens require a visa to cruise to Cambodia, even if staying on board the ship. Electronic visas obtained online are only valid to enter Cambodia by air or land.

You can check the latest visa requirements for Cambodia on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Co-operation website .

China Cruises

Anyone visiting China on a cruise must ensure that they have the right visa for China. Depending on your cruise itinerary, you may need a single or double entry visa. It’s important that you provide full details of your cruise itinerary when applying for a visa for China.

All visa applicants between the age of 14 and 70 must apply for a Chinese visa in person at a Visa application centre .

Hong Kong Cruises

UK passport holders do not usually need a visa to cruise to Hong Kong. However, if you intend to visit mainland China before or after your cruise then you will need to obtain a visa for China.

India Cruises

Anyone who doesn’t hold an Indian passport must obtain a visa to visit India on a cruise. If you do not have an Indian visa, then it may be possible to remain on board the ship in Indian ports of call.

Visas for travel to India can take several months to process. The application can be tricky to complete and you must ensure that you select the right type of visa, as the wrong visa could result in you being blacklisted for travel.

You can find further information on the Indian High Commission website or the Indian Immigration Bureau website .

Japan Cruises

Brits taking a cruise to Japan may require a visa. If you require a visa and do not have one, then you will not be allowed to board your cruise ship.

The visa rules for Japan may be subject to change at short notice, so be sure to check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan website for the latest information.

Maldives Cruises

All UK cruise passengers arriving in the Maldives by cruise ship will receive a visa on arrival free of charge.

For further information on entry requirements for the Maldives, you should contact the High Commission of the Republic of Maldives in the UK or the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Maldives.

Myanmar Cruises

UK nationals must apply for a visa to enter Myanmar (Burma) on a cruise. You cannot use an electronic eVisa to enter Myanmar by sea. You should contact your travel agent or cruise line to arrange the visa.

Oman Cruises

British passport holders may require a visa to enter Oman. For cruise passengers, this is usually arranged by the cruise line. If you visit Oman for one day only, the visa is usually free of charge, but if the ship is in Oman for 48 hours or more then there may be a charge.

It’s recommended that you speak to your travel agent or cruise line representative for more information.

Sri Lanka Cruises

All cruise passengers must obtain an electronic ETA visa before arrival in to Sri Lanka. The visa is free of charge but must be obtained at least 48 hours in advance. If you do not have the required visa then you must remain on the ship in Sri Lankan ports.

You can apply for a Transit ETA visa for Sri Lanka via the Sri Lanka Electronic Travel Authorization System website .

United Arab Emirates

UK citizens travelling to the UAE on a cruise will receive a visa upon arrival in the United Arab Emirates free of charge.

Australia Cruises

British citizens must obtain a visa to visit Australia on a cruise. This applies to guests embarking or debarking in Australia, visiting a port of call in Australia or transiting through Australia to start a cruise elsewhere.

There are several types of visas for Australia including the ETA (Electronic Travel Authority), the eVisitor visa and the Transit visa. You can get help in choosing the right one for your cruise by using the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs website .

New Zealand Cruises

UK citizens visiting New Zealand on a cruise must have a visa. If you do not have a visa, then you will be denied boarding. Remaining on the cruise ship is not an option.

The NZeTA visa can be purchased from the New Zealand immigration website or app.

visa application

UK citizens can cruise to any of the following countries without the need for a visa:

  • New Caledonia
  • Reunion Island
  • South Africa

You can also cruise to any country in geographical Europe without the need for a visa.

What if Your Visa is Refused?

Visas can be refused for all kinds of reasons, such as ticking the wrong box or even using the wrong colour of ink. To make sure that you have the best chance of getting your visa approved, you should be careful to read all of the questions thoroughly before filling out the application.

Be sure to apply for your visa in plenty of time so that you have time to try again if your visa is refused.

Can You Stay On the Ship Instead of Getting a Visa?

If you don’t have the necessary visa for your cruise, some countries will allow you to remain on the ship when it docks. However, some countries insist that visas are checked before boarding, so, depending on the rules, you may be denied boarding altogether.

The Bottom Line

So, do cruise ship passengers need visas? Well, the visa requirements for cruises are complicated. Luckily, there are many countries that allow UK citizens entry without a visa. Any time that you travel outside of Europe, you should check the latest visa requirements via an official government website, your cruise line or your travel agent.

Make sure that you do your research when it comes to which visas you need for your cruise, so that you won’t be left disappointed by not being able to visit any of the places that you want to.

If you ask the cruise line, they will be able to let you know exactly which visas you need for your particular cruise.

I fly from the UK to Dubia and cruise around the emirates, docking in Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas, Dammam – Saudi Arabia, & Doha.

Do you know if we require a visa?

Do you know if you require a visa when joining cruise ship in Doha. Flying to Doha then msc emirates cruise. Saudia is one of the stops as well.

I’d recommend checking with the cruise line for the latest info.

Do you know if a visa is required for Jeddah even if you stay on the ship? The gov website does not cover cruises that I can see.

I’m not sure sorry.
