What they say

This tour really was a bones and all level of detail! Organised well from the start, our guide took us to a few places on Prague first to give us some context to the history and relationship with Kutna Hora. When at Kutna Hora, we saw the truly awe-inspiring bone chapel, which really has to be seen to really grasp it. Our guide was incredibly attentive, knowledgeable, friendly and funny - everything you need to feel relaxed and involved in learning about this fascinating place. The tour was so worth doing and really added something extra to our trip.

GingeWeb

We came to see Prague for about a week, a group of 4 friends at 19. We got to see Prague in an interesting and entertaining way with our excellent guide - Pistis, who was more than happy to give us recommendations for parties and other attractions after the tour had already ended. Thanks Pistis ! And enjoy y’all.

Tal112233

Super interesting tour and worthwhile for anyone who wants to understand more about more recent history. Did the tour on Remembrance Sunday which felt even more poignant.

Ro M

Did a 4 hour private city tour with Honza. He’s very knowledgeable, and extremely accommodating in working out what he thought I would like to see based on my interests. Would definitely recommend the company as it was easy to schedule with, and again, the tour guide was amazing!

Michael C

This was a great tour and really good value for money. It was very informative and it takes you to parts of the city that you may not otherwise have gone to. Our tour guide Phil was brilliant, very knowledgeable and able to answer any questions we had. Would definitely recommend this tour to anyone with an interest in the subject

Three Years of Adventures with the Lobkowicz Family: Unveiling Czech Republic’s Treasures

In the midst of the pandemic, when tourism in Prague and the Czech Republic came to an abrupt halt, a serendipitous twist of fate led me to an extraordinary opportunity. Day trips from Prague

When you are done exploring the beautiful capital, set out to discover the surrounding wonders. There are various amazing destinations to plan a day trip from Prague that will give you a break from the city tour, taking you to another world of art and culture.

1. Kutna Hora

This extraordinary destination is a collection of various interesting historic buildings. This small town captivates the visitors with its architectural palette and is a must-visit part of the Czech Republic tours. Sedlec Ossuary, Sankturin House, and Hrádek Castle are some important spots to visit.

2. Karlovy Vary

This beautiful spa town is filled with Bohemian culture and history, waiting to be discovered. There are various natural spas and hot springs along with the 14th-century building with fascinating architecture. Walk around to admire the stunning surrounding and then soak away your stress and fatigue in a natural spa.

The Frauenkirche home provides you the opportunity to add another European country to your list. This German city is a must-visit destination for art lovers with its magnificent architecture and various artistic masterpieces. Dresden Altstadt and Neustadt must not be missed during the visit.

4.  Český Krumlov

This enchanting destination is a hidden Bohemian gem located among the snaky bends of Vltava. With every passing day, the small town is becoming more and more popular, and you have to be very patient to make your space, especially if you visit during peak season. The small fairytale town lies on either side of the river and has various beautiful spots for the tourists to visit.

5. Terezin Concentration Camp

The historical site takes you back in time and gives you the opportunity to relive the Nazi occupation time in the country during WWII. It was originally built as a fortress to protect Prague but became the opposite after Nazis pushed through Europe and got hold of the place.

Best time to go

Prague has overall a cool atmosphere with a pleasant summer and extremely cold winter. Summertime has a pleasant atmosphere and a maximum tourist flux, which means high rates for accommodation.

The best time to visit the capital city is during spring (March to May) and early fall (September) when the temperature is mild, and the city has low tourist crowds. You can enjoy all the outdoor locations with mostly clear skies during this time.

Spring is the most beautiful time in Prague with a cool breeze, colorful surroundings, and a pleasant atmosphere. If you plan your trip wisely, you can also get the chance to enjoy some local festivals. Fall time brings crispy air, falling leaves, and cool temperature, with beautiful scenery.

Due to the low tourist influx, you might also get discount deals on accommodation, making it more feasible for you to explore the city at your own pace.

Is Prague expensive?

Prague is an expensive city compared with other Czech cities, but compared to various other European capitals, the city has great value. Your overall expenses depend upon the way you spend during your trip. If you are careful about your choices of accommodation, food, and transport, you can make it quite a reasonable amount.

Like, eating in a sit-down restaurant is more expensive compared to street food, the cost of travel in a taxi is more than the cost of local transport, etc. The accommodation cost may vary with your choice of accommodation as well as the time you chose to visit Prague.

If you are planning your Czech Republic tours off-season, you might get discounted deals giving you cheaper options while peak season will cost you a lot more for accommodation.

Is Prague safe?

Pickpocketing is a very common crime in Prague, and you need to be very careful about your belongings to avoid any mishap. Czech police are very cooperative, but they can't do much if you are robbed, so it is better to adopt safety measures.

Don't carry heavy amounts on you while moving around and leave your important documents at home. Be careful and attentive, especially among the crowds or local transport. Use a money belt to keep your valuables to avoid getting robbed. Don't exchange money on the street and avoid people who offer you such services.

Is Prague included on most Czech Republic tours?

Prague is the largest city and capital of the Czech Republic and is one of the most popular cities in the continent. The significant Bohemian history and important location make this city a popular destination.

Czech Republic tours are incomplete without visiting this important city, and it is included in almost every tour of the country.

Food and drink in Prague

Prague is the fifth most visited city of Europe, and one of the significant reasons for its popularity is the unique and delicious local cuisine.

1. Trdelník (Chimney Cake)

This is a traditional sweet snack made with yeast dough wrapped around a metal or wooden stick. The rolled-out dough is cooked traditionally on coal flame, making it crispy outside and gooey inside. The inside of the chimney cake is coated with hazelnut or chocolate spread.

2. Chlebíčky

Also called 'open-faced sandwich,' this delicious snack is one of the most popular dishes of the region. This sandwich is usually eaten by the locals in breakfast or lunch, and especially during social gatherings and celebrations. It consists of a baguette-like bread, which is topped with egg, cucumber, salami, and ham.

The origin of this dish goes back to Hungary, but in modern times, you will find many Czech versions of this dish across the country. The dish comprises a thicker stew of beef or pork and is served with dumplings.

4.  Palačinky

These thin Czech pancakes are just like the French crepes and are served as sweet desserts. They are usually served topped with ice cream, nuts, jam, sweet cheese, fruits, and whipped cream. The savory version is topped with meat, spinach or cheese.

5. Svíčková

This sirloin beef dish is a part of social gatherings, lunches, and dinners with different combinations. Thin beef slices are seasoned with sweet white sauce and covered in creamy vegetable sauce, served with bread dumplings, cream, and lemon slices.

Beer is a national beverage and a crucial part of the Prague experience. The country has the highest beer consumption in the world as people are very fond of it with local cuisine. Pilsner is the most popular country-made beer, a pale lager with the local origin.

See What Our Guests are Saying

Tripadvisor.

Vadim was an excellent guide – conceptual and political themes into historical context. As a bonus, the sunset from Vitkov was stunning and something that most tourists don’t get to see. Highly recommended!

It was a rainy day so we had to adjust a little. Beer was good, and Vad’s knowledge was over the top. Ended up spending 5 hours with him learning about Czech history

This tour was fantastic. Vadim was an amazing guide and I would recommend this to anyone who wants a sophisticated, intellectual discussion on this history of communism in the Czech lands.

Insight Cities is head and shoulders above many other European tours I’ve been on. The guides are professors and subject matter experts in the field, and their expertise and ability to captivate a crowd really comes across. I took the tour with my mother and we both enjoyed it immensely. Going on this tour made our trip to Prague extra special. If you are visiting Prague, don’t miss it!

The Insight Cities tour of Art Nouveau/Cubist Architecture is a very entertaining and stimulating tour of Prague’s architectural wonders. This tour takes you on a pleasant walk through some of Prague’s most beautiful sites – both the well-known monuments and the city’s hidden gems. During our walk, our guide Bonita offered fascinating details about art nouveau, cubism, and art deco and gave insight into the historical events in Central Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries that led to the formation of these art movements.

  • June 14, 2023
  • 8 minute read

How many times have you visited a new city, excited to learn more about the history and the culture…only to take an underwhelming tour? Prague may be one of the most historically dense cities in Europe – there’s just SO much to see in Prague . From Prague Castle to Charles Bridge and beyond, there is endless history, culture and hidden gems to unpack across this central European city. No matter the length of your stay, booking a Prague tour might be the best option to maximize time AND learn about the city. As a local, I can assure you the best way to see Prague is by taking tours in Prague.

Prague's Mala Strana neighborhood, one of the best spots to do Prague tours.

Not all Prague tours are created equal, after all. So how do you pick the best tours in Prague for your needs? I’m breaking down all the best Prague tours according to interest – so whether you’re a foodie looking for the best up-and-coming spots or a devout walking tour fan, I’ve got something for everyone on my list. The Best Prague Tours

Prague will always be one of my favorite places to visit in Europe – and that’s because the city is packed with endless history. Booking tours in Prague can be a great way to unpack and explore the city beyond the guidebooks. Here’s my ultimate list of the best Prague tours to make your trip as special and unforgettable as possible! Let’s dive in.

Prague's Old Town neighborhood, one of the best spots to do Prague tours.

Pro tip : Not sure what to pack for your Prague trip? Check out  my full packing guide for Prague and Czech Republic here . It’s filled with useful tips about weather, different region, a complete checklist for every season, and more!

The best Prague tours to see it ALL

So you only have one day and want to see all the best Prague highlights ? Easy peasy, friend. I got you covered. When you’re booking a Prague tour to see highlights, you should look for a tour that combines Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, Prague Castle and other major highlights.

If you’re looking for Prague tours that covers all the Prague highlights , including Charles Bridge, I recommend this walking tour — which includes a typical Czech lunch and hour-long boat cruise, too! There’s no way to see every single thing in Prague, but this tour comes pretty close to including all the most important highlights. There’s no better way to visit the best places to visit in Prague in one tour.

The best Prague food tour

Prague's Foodie Tour, one of Prague's best tours

I’m going to be honest with you: I only recommend one Prague food tour. That’s right. Just the one.

Why? I’m a foodie at heart, and I take my food recommendations seriously (see: my favorite Prague restaurants here and my honest-to-God list of the best bakeries in Prague here). I would never recommend just any Prague tour, and I certainly would never recommend anything other than the best Prague food tour on the market.

If you’re looking for THE best food tour in Prague, this is the one you need to book . The Prague Foodie Tour is run by the best food bloggers in Prague. Each day, they take a small group of people to some of Prague’s best restaurants – all within a one-mile span. You’ll taste some of Prague’s best food, of course, but you’ll also learn a lot about Czech food and the context behind the cuisine. The food is delicious, the beer is amazing, and you’ll have the best time ever. Book the Prague food tour here .

The best free walking tour in Prague

Prague Free Walking Tour

Walking tours in Prague are the best way to meet new friends and see the city at the same time. One of my friends in Prague, a lifelong local, does free walking tours with Free Walking Tour Prague . These are, hands down, the best free walking tours in Prague.

Free Walking Tour Prague is a small, local company based in Prague. All the professional guides are either local Czechs passionate about Prague history or longtime Prague residents who speak Czech. The company has a variety of tours covering different sights across Prague; they operate daily in English and Spanish. Book your tour here .

The best (paid) walking tour Prague

Prague's Old Town neighborhood, one of the best spots to do Prague tours.

Walking is, hands down, my favorite way to explore Prague. I’m going to break down two of my favorite walking tours in Prague. The first is much shorter, and the second is a little longer for those visitors looking for Prague tours that cover it all.

Let’s start with the first option: this three Euro tip-based tour. Yes, you heard me right. To join this tour, it costs just THREE Euros. It doesn’t get much better value than that. The tour is run by the good people behind Real Prague Guides – locals who want to help you explore Prague and make your stay memorable.

With this tour, you’ll spend roughly three hours exploring Old Town, the Jewish Quarter and Charles Bridge, among other top sights. Group sizes range from 10 to 30 people, depending on the day. At the end of the tour, if you’re happy, you can leave a tip for your guide.

Looking for a longer tour option? The best paid walking tour of Prague lasts six hours – but includes many of Prague’s top sights. This tour may be a little longer, but it includes lunch and a one-hour boat cruise on the Vltava. All in all, it’s an excellent value to see Prague’s best highlights. Book my favorite paid walking tour here .

The best bus tours in Prague

I’m going to be completely honest with you: don’t book a bus tour. Bus tours in Prague are perhaps the worst way to see Prague. Most of Prague’s historic center isn’t built for big buses or hop-on-and-off buses. In fact, these buses can’t really access many of Prague’s sights. Instead of booking bus tours in Prague, I’d highly recommend opting for public transit instead – or even booking a group walking tour through Prague instead.

The best Prague boat tours

Prague's Old Town neighborhood, one of the best spots to do Prague tours.

Boat cruises may seem touristy, but in my humble opinion, boat tours are a wonderful way to see Prague in a whole new light. The best Prague boat tours cruise down the river at sunset, offering drinks, snacks (or even full meals!) and plenty of outdoor space to snap as many photos and videos as you want.

Since moving to the Czech Republic, I’ve done multiple boat tours along the Vltava River. This is the boat tour we did for our Valentine’s Day , and it was honestly perfect (and the food wasn’t bad either!). Boat tours like this one are perfect for summer visits. Trust me: with the breeze blowing through your hair and the sun setting over Prague Castle…You’ll fall even more in love with Prague.

The best private tours in Prague

Prague's Old Town neighborhood, one of the best spots to do Prague tours.

Sometimes, crowds can be overwhelming. I get it, I feel the same way. That’s why I always recommend a private tour option for people looking for Prague tours. Private tours offer much more flexibility, give you the opportunity to ask more questions and help you see Prague at your own pace.

If you’re seeking out a shorter version of the best private tours in Prague, check out this 3-hour tour of Prague . You can opt for a walking version or a private car, depending on your preferences and mobility. The tour includes all the best Prague highlights, from Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral to the Jewish Quarter, Old Town and Charles Bridge. However, you have the option to customize the tour with your guide in advance to ensure you see what you want to see.

For visitors looking to spend a little more time in Prague, I always recommend this full-day private tour of Prague . It’s an excellent value for what you get! You’ll see Prague Castle, Charles Bridge and Old Town Square, of course, but you’ll also visit Strahov Monastery, Petrin Tower, St Nicholas’ Cathedral as well as the Lennon Wall. It’s AMAZING value for the price – you’re truly seeing the best of Prague. You can customize the tour with your guide in advance, as well, to ensure you see exactly what you want.

Likewise, you can opt for a walking version – or a private car, depending on your preference. The price includes transport and hotel pick up.

The best tours in Prague to get OUT of the city

The view from State Castle Cesky Krumlov, considered one of the most beautiful castles in Czech Republic

If you’re in Prague for more than a couple days, I always recommend visitors spend some time outside of Prague. Don’t get me wrong: I love Prague. But there’s so much beauty and wonder to explore across the Czech Republic. In fact, many of the best trips can be done as day trips .

Many people opt to visit one of Czech Republic’s most beautiful castles because so many of them lie nestled in the countryside around Prague.

You can, of course, plan one of these trips yourself. A lot of the Prague day trips below are accessible by rental car, train or bus – but the routes may not always be super direct.

If you’re looking for a more seamless experience, I personally recommend booking a tour. Why? Well, many of the historical guided tours at castles (especially the smaller ones!) are not in English — or they operate English tours at a reduced schedule.

Plus, guided tours help coordinate transport and fees to streamline a stress-free experience.

If you’re looking to explore the Czech Republic, these are the Prague tours I recommend for first-time visitors and frequent visitors alike….

  • Bohemian Switzerland National Park , an otherwise difficult hiking area to access without a car. If you love nature, you cannot miss this absolutely BREATHTAKING scenery. This tour is a fantastic option because you can tailor your trip to exactly what you want to see. Book early , as it often sells out!
  • Cesky Krumlov , also known as one of the most magical cities in Czech Republic .
  • Konopiste Castle , the last home of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne (you may know him from your history books — his assassination in Sarajevo triggered World War I). I personally love this tour because Lucy is really passionate about her work. You spend a lot of time exploring the castle, too.
  • Hluboka Castle and Cervena Lhota Castle , two of my favorite castles in the south of Czech Republic (and two of the most BEAUTIFUL castles, hands down). This tour combines the two , which is a great option for anyone who doesn’t want to rent a car and drive through windy roads.
  • Terezin : Terezin was a concentration camp north of Prague during World War II. This spot was once a resort town for Czech nobility. During the war, more than 150,000 Jews were sent to Terezin before being sent to their deaths at Treblinka and Auschwitz extermination camps in occupied Poland, as well as to smaller camps elsewhere. It’s a difficult place to visit, but if you’re interested in a darker side of Czech Republic’s history, Terezin can be a painful reminder to never repeat the mistakes of our past. This bus tour is the best way to visit from Prague. The guide is very knowledgeable and doesn’t rush you through the site.

Prague Castle

Let our private guide explain to you the history of the Prague Castle on this private tour. Historically a seat of the Czech kings, Prague Castle is currently the seat of the Czech president. The president’s residence is however in a palace in Lány, which is located 30 minutes drive to the West of Prague. On the hill where the Prague Castle lies was originally a smaller wooden fortified settlement since the 9th Century. In 882 the duke Bořivoj built the first church and named it after St. Mary. It was the first stone building in Prague Castle. In the period 1070-1140 the duke Vratislav I moved the seat of bohemian kings to Vyšehrad due to a dispute with his brother, bishop Jaromír. In the period 1383-1484 the Prague Castle was not suitable for living therefore the king Wenceslas IV, son of the famous emperor Charles IV, moved the seat to the King’s Court, a fortress that used to stand on today’s Republic square. In 1484 Vladislav Jagello moved the seat back to Prague Castle and rebuilt it in renaissance style. During the rule of the Habsburgs between the years 1526-1918 the kings resided in Vienna. Only one Habsburg chose Prague as his Capital. His name was Rudolf II. During his rule the Prague Castle was home to many alchymists and artists. Since 1918 it has been the official seat of the Czech Presidents.

The state of tourism and hospitality 2024

Tourism and hospitality are on a journey of disruption. Shifting source markets and destinations, growing demand for experiential and luxury travel, and innovative business strategies are all combining to dramatically alter the industry landscape. Given this momentous change, it’s important for stakeholders to consider and strategize on four major themes:

  • The bulk of travel is close to home. Although international travel might draw headlines, stakeholders shouldn’t neglect the big opportunities in their backyards. Domestic travel still represents the bulk of travel spending, and intraregional tourism is on the rise.
  • Consumers increasingly prioritize travel—when it’s on their own terms. Interest in travel is booming, but travelers are no longer content with a one-size-fits-all experience. Individual personalization might not always be practical, but savvy industry players can use segmentation and hypothesis-driven testing to improve their value propositions. Those that fail to articulate target customer segments and adapt their offerings accordingly risk getting left behind.
  • The face of luxury travel is changing. Demand for luxury tourism and hospitality is expected to grow faster than any other travel segment today—particularly in Asia. It’s crucial to understand that luxury travelers don’t make up a monolith. Segmenting by age, nationality, and net worth can reveal varied and evolving preferences and behaviors.
  • As tourism grows, destinations will need to prepare to mitigate overcrowding. Destinations need to be ready to handle the large tourist flows of tomorrow. Now is the time for stakeholders to plan, develop, and invest in mitigation strategies. Equipped with accurate assessments of carrying capacities and enhanced abilities to gather and analyze data, destinations can improve their transportation and infrastructure, build tourism-ready workforces, and preserve their natural and cultural heritages.

Now boarding: Faces, places, and trends shaping tourism in 2024

Global travel is back and buzzing. The amount of travel fell by 75 percent in 2020; however, travel is on its way to a full recovery by the end of 2024. More regional trips, an emerging population of new travelers, and a fresh set of destinations are powering steady spending in tourism.

There’s no doubt that people still love to travel and will continue to seek new experiences in new places. But where will travelers come from, and where will they go?

We share a snapshot of current traveler flows, along with estimates for growth through 2030.

The way we travel now

Which trends are shaping traveler sentiment now? What sorts of journeys do today’s travelers dream about? How much are they willing to spend on their trips? And what should industry stakeholders do to adapt to the traveler psychology of the moment?

To gauge what’s on the minds of present-day travelers, we surveyed more than 5,000 of them. The findings reveal disparate desires, generational divides, and a newly emerging set of traveler archetypes.

Updating perceptions about today’s luxury traveler

Demand for luxury tourism and hospitality is expected to grow faster than for any other segment. This growth is being powered in part by a large and expanding base of aspiring luxury travelers with net worths between $100,000 and $1 million, many of whom are younger and increasingly willing to spend larger shares of their wealth on upscale travel options. The increase is also a result of rising wealth levels in Asia.

We dug deeper into this ongoing evolution by surveying luxury travelers around the globe about their preferences, plans, and expectations. Some widely held notions about luxury travelers—such as how much money they have, how old they are, and where they come from—could be due for reexamination.

Destination readiness: Preparing for the tourist flows of tomorrow

As global tourism grows, it will be crucial for destinations to be ready. How can the tourism ecosystem prepare to host unprecedented volumes of visitors while managing the challenges that can accompany this success? A large flow of tourists, if not carefully channeled, can encumber infrastructure, harm natural and cultural attractions, and frustrate locals and visitors alike.

Now is the time for tourism stakeholders to combine their thinking and resources to look for better ways to handle the visitor flows of today while properly preparing themselves for the visitor flows of tomorrow. We offer a diagnostic that destinations can use to spot early-warning signs about tourism concentration, along with suggestions for funding mechanisms and strategies to help maximize the benefits of tourism while minimizing its negative impacts.

Six trends shaping new business models in tourism and hospitality

As destinations and source markets have transformed over the past decade, tourism and hospitality companies have evolved, too. Accommodation, home sharing, cruises, and theme parks are among the sectors in which new approaches could present new opportunities. Stakeholders gearing up for new challenges should look for business model innovations that will help sustain their hard-won growth—and profits.

Unbundling offerings, cross-selling distinctive experiences, and embracing data-powered strategies can all be winning moves. A series of insight-driven charts reveal significant trends and an outlook on the future.

Russia is beating western capitals in securing artillery supplies on international markets, the Czech government has said, warning that delayed payments to arms companies could lead to millions of ammunition rounds being sent to Moscow instead of Kyiv.

Prague is coordinating purchases of ammunition from arms companies in non-Nato countries on behalf of many western allies, but is struggling to compete with Moscow, which has proved it can get financing to manufacturers faster.

“There are some countries that are supplying [Ukraine] from the same stockpiles that the Russians are [buying from],” Tomáš Kopečný, Prague’s envoy for the reconstruction of Ukraine, told journalists Thursday. “If you have the cash to do the pre-payment faster than the Russians, then the products go to the Ukrainian side. If you don’t have the cash on the account, then sometimes it goes to the Russians.”

The Czech warning comes as its domestic arms producer Czechoslovak Group, the largest ammunition supplier in central Europe, warned that rising prices and poor quality meant that half the shells it had received could not be sent to Ukraine’s battlefields as quickly as planned.

Michal Strnad, owner and chair of CSG, told the Financial Times that about 50 per cent of the parts acquired by his company on behalf of the Czech government in places such as Africa and Asia were not good enough to be sent to Ukraine without further work. For some shells, CSG is being forced to add missing components from its own production.

“Every week the price is going up and there are big issues with the components,” Strnad said during an interview in his company’s Prague offices. “It’s not an easy job.”

However, he stressed that the Czech initiative remained “on track” and that CSG was committed to delivering its assigned part of the supplies.

The war in Ukraine has helped to send prices soaring for the limited number of shells that could be purchased outside of Nato states at a time when there is no spare ammunition or production capacity in Europe.

“The production capacity is out there. But it is not in Europe,” Kopečný said. “There are single-digit millions of rounds of ammunition that we are competing [with Russia] for . . . The only thing we need for that is corresponding finances.”

Strnad said that the order books of European ammunition makers were full for up to the next eight years, depending on the type of parts, even as “all of us are increasing the capacities”.

Even in the unlikely scenario of Ukraine’s war finishing right now, he said, “there will be huge work in front of us to replenish the strategic stocks of Nato countries”.

EU leaders from the Netherlands, Denmark, Latvia and Poland, along with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, attended a dinner in Prague hosted by Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala on Tuesday to discuss Ukraine’s weapons shortfall, which is crippling its efforts to fight Russia.

Fiala said that 15 EU and Nato countries had so far contributed €1.6bn to the Czech initiative, which was announced in February and aims to provide 1.5mn artillery shells to Ukraine. A first batch of tens of thousands of 155mm calibre shells would be delivered next month to Ukraine, Fiala said.

The Czech government has asked CSG and other smaller Czech defence companies to act as intermediaries and source the shells from countries outside the EU.

Strnad said he was in separate discussions with authorities in Kyiv to start building facilities in Ukraine that could make CSG the first EU defence company to produce large-calibre shells in Ukraine.

As part of the plans, CSG would build a factory in Ukraine, a truck assembly line and a maintenance facility to handle weapons delivered to Kyiv. CSG would spend “a few hundred million euros” to launch its three Ukrainian manufacturing projects and was hoping to reach an agreement with Kyiv this year.

Ukraine has been struggling to contain Russia on the battlefield largely because of a shortfall of soldiers and ammunition. Strnad said he had warned policymakers two years ago that access to artillery shells could define the outcome of the war, but to little avail.

“They didn’t think that there could be some war where artillery would play the major role. Everybody thought about drones, artificial intelligence and new trends,” he said.

Shmyhal underlined on Tuesday the need not only for fresh artillery ammunition to reach Ukraine’s front lines as soon as possible, but also for Nato allies to respond to Kyiv’s request for seven additional Patriot air defence systems and more fighter jets.

Blinken Travels to Eastern Europe as Russia Presses War in Ukraine

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken aims to show support for Moldova, which is under threat from Russia, and plans to attend a NATO meeting in the Czech Republic.

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, with his hand raised to his mouth.

By Edward Wong

Reporting from Washington

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken plans to spend this week showing U.S. support for nations facing a hostile Russia in visits to Moldova and the Czech Republic, where he is scheduled to attend a meeting of NATO foreign ministers that will discuss how to bolster Ukraine.

Mr. Blinken, who made an overnight stop in Kyiv more than two weeks ago, flew into Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, on Wednesday to meet with Maia Sandu, the nation’s president, who is running for re-election. Ms. Sandu has advocated for Moldova to join the European Union, and she has scheduled a referendum vote on E.U. membership on the same day as the general election in October.

She is expected to run against a pro-Russia candidate, and U.S. and European analysts say Moscow is likely to try to interfere in the election, as it has in other votes in Europe. The Biden administration has spoken publicly of Russian agents carrying out such interference using a variety of means, from hacking to boosting campaigns over social networks to doling out money to favored politicians.

U.S. officials said Mr. Blinken would speak with Ms. Sandu and other top officials about potential threats to the country’s democratic processes, as well as efforts to wean the nation off electricity generated in the pro-Russia separatist region of Transnistria. Moldova recently ended its reliance on gas imports from Russia.

“I anticipate he’ll have a robust package of support for Moldova’s transition, both energy independence or less dependence on sources to the east but also on support for democracy against Russian threats,” James O’Brien, the assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian Affairs, said in a phone call with reporters on Friday.

Mr. Blinken plans to announce more details of American aid to address these issues during his visit, Mr. O’Brien said.

He added that the secretary’s message would “highlight Moldova’s progress in its path toward European integration, its solidifying its democracy, and the threat posed by the Russian interference in its internal processes.”

About 1,500 Russian troops are in Transnistria, which is in the east of Moldova and borders Ukraine. U.S. officials are watching closely for any signs that President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia might try to annex the territory. Russia officially says it seeks a special status for Transnistria.

In the Czech Republic, which State Department officials now call Czechia, following the lead of the country’s government, Mr. Blinken plans to attend a two-day planning session of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and meet with Czech officials.

The NATO session in Prague, the nation’s capital, is aimed at preparing for the 80th anniversary meeting of alliance leaders in Washington in July. The group is not expected to declare that Ukraine is joining NATO now, an aspiration that President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated repeatedly both before and after Russia’s full-scale invasion, which began in 2022. However, NATO officials in Prague are expected to work out the details for a substantial show of support for Ukraine’s progress toward joining NATO, and those will be announced in July, Mr. O’Brien said.

Russian troops are pressing an offensive in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. The Ukrainian war effort has been flagging in large part because of a shortage of weapons and munitions, and there are fewer citizens able to join the fight. President Biden recently signed into law a bill passed by Congress, despite some Republican opposition, that grants new tranches of military aid to Ukraine, as well as to Israel.

However, Russia is producing munitions at a rapid rate, and U.S.-led sanctions against the nation have not crippled its military industrial capabilities, as Americans officials had once hoped. Mr. Biden and his aides say China has played a decisive role in bolstering Russia through the sale of dual-use equipment and other exports that have allowed Moscow to strengthen weapons production. Mr. Blinken is expected to highlight China’s support for Russia in his discussions with NATO counterparts in Prague.

An earlier version of this article misstated the country that borders Transnistria. It is Ukraine, not Russia.

The start of a new month can mean only one thing for investors: time for the all-important monthly U.S. employment report, but also for a likely European Central Bank rate cut, as well as the outcome of India's marathon general election.

SNYDE | Bruce Springsteen shares first personal update since postponing European tour

“Hey, this is Bruce Springsteen,” The Boss said in a video posted to Instagram on Monday. “I am in Marseille, [France]. Unfortunately, I could not sing for you . But we will be back — to Marseilles, to Prague and to Milan — to give you the show of your life. That I promise you.”

On Sunday, Springsteen announced that doctors had ordered him to stop performing upon “further examination and consulting” after “vocal issues” postponed his Marseille concert on Saturday night.

Springsteen made his announcement two days before he’d been scheduled to perform Tuesday in Prague. Also postponed were his Milan dates this Saturday and Sunday.

The tour is set to resume on June 12 in Madrid, and Springsteen said Monday that was still the plan.

“In the meantime I’d like to thank our Irish fans, our British fans, our friends in Wales, for giving us a series of shows that was deeply memorable,” Springsteen said, alluding to the portion of the tour he had just finished. “We’ll be back — coming back to Madrid and Barcelona, where we plan to rock you into the ground.”

It was not the first time in recent months that health issues forced Springsteen to step back. In August, he postponed two Philadelphia shows due to an unspecified illness. The following month, he was sidelined with peptic ulcer disease , which ultimately forced him to cancel the remainder of his 2023 concert dates .
