How to enjoy a trip on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway

Much to the excitement of travel enthusiasts, the toy train service in Ooty was resumed at the end of last month after a gap of two months.

India's heritage train

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, that operates the train services to Ooty, is one of the oldest mountain railways in India. The British had begun the construction of this railway in 1854. Later in July 2005, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway was declared as a UNESCO world heritage site. The Himalayan Railway in Darjeeling is also included in list of the world heritage sites.

Taking in the sights at leisurely pace

The 46km train journey is from Mettupalayam, which is 330m above the sea level, to Ooty, which is situated 2200m above the sea level.

Ooty, the capital of Nilgiris district, is also known as Udagamandalam. The hill town has long been one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in India. That’s why there is never a vacant seat on the toy train.

As it runs at an average speed of just 10.4km in an hour, the toy train is regarded as the slowest train in India. The train journey stretches up to 4.5 hours to cover the distance of 46km. The toy train passes through 16 tunnels, 250 bridges and 208 curves.

Main stations

The Nilgiri Railway is the only mountain railway in south India to conduct services daily. One pair of trains operates services on this route every day. The train leaves from Mettupalayam at 7.10am and chugs into Ooty at 12 noon. And it departs from Ooty at 2pm and reaches Mettupalayam at 5.35pm.

Coonoor, Wellington, Aravankadu, Ketti, and Lovedale are the stations en route to Ooty from Mettupalayam. First-class and second-class tickets are available.

How to book tickets?

The toy train tickets can be booked online via the Indian Railway's website (www.irctc.co.in). In the wake of the Covid pandemic, there are restrictions on purchasing tickets directly from the station ticket counters.

The number of tourists will be very high during the season, holidays, and weekends. The toy train journey is likely possible only if you book the tickets at least 2 or 3 months in advance.

Ride the Nilgiri Mountain Railway Toy Train to Ooty

One of India's Most Popular Toy Trains

places to visit in ooty toy train

Ooty Hill Station

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train is the highlight of a visit to the popular hill station of Ooty , in south India's Tamil Nadu state. Established in the early 19th century by the British as the summer headquarters of the Chennai government, Ooty now draws tourists wanting to escape the stifling summer heat.

The railway opened 1899 and was completed in 1908. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005. The quaint toy train pulls blue and cream wooden carriages with large windows.

Railway Features

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs from Mettupalayam to Udagamandalam (Ooty), via Coonoor, in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu. It's the only meter gauge, rack railway in India. Also known as a cog railway, it has a middle rail fitted with a rack that engages a pinion on the locomotive. This provides traction for the train to go up steep inclines. (Apparently, it's the steepest track in Asia, increasing from 1,069 feet to 7,228 feet above sea level).

The railway predominantly uses a fleet of X Class steam locomotives. In recent years, its vintage coal-fired steam locomotives have been replaced by new oil-fired steam engines. This was necessary due to recurring technical snags, problems getting quality coal, and the risk of causing forest fires. The retired steam engines will be exhibited at Coimbatore and Ooty railway stations, and the Nilgiri Mountain Rail Museum at Mettupalayam.

However, according to a  news report , officials want to retain the heritage value of the railway and plan to reintroduce one of the coal-fired steam engines. Unfortunately, it failed a trial run in February 2018, due to lack of steam pressure.

The train's steam engine is switched to a diesel one on the section between Coonoor and Ooty.

Route Features

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is 46 kilometers (28.5 miles) long. It passes through many tunnels, and over hundreds of bridges (about 30 of them are large ones). The railway is particularly picturesque because of the surrounding rocky terrain, ravines, tea plantations , and thickly forested hills. Coonoor, with its world famous teas, is a tourist destination in itself. The most spectacular scenery and best views are situated along the stretch from Mettupalayam to Coonoor. Hence, some people prefer to only travel along this part.

How to Reach Mettupalayam

Coimbatore is the closest city to Mettupalayam. It's located about an hour south and has an airport that receives flights from all over India.

The daily 12671 Nilagiri (Blue Mountain) Express train from Chennai arrives in Mettupalayam at 6.15 a.m. and connects with the toy train's morning departure. (It also connects with the toy train's evening arrival in Mettupalayam on the return journey). The Nilagiri Express stops in Coimbatore at 5 a.m. on the way, so it's possible to take this train from there to Mettupalayam. Alternatively, a taxi will cost about 1,200 rupees ($18).

Frequent buses run from Coimbatore to Mettupalayam, starting from 5 a.m. There are also regular passenger trains between the two places during the day. You'll find a few decent budget hotels in Mettupalayam if you want to stay there overnight to catch the toy train the next morning. However, better accommodations are available in Coimbatore.

Regular Train Services and Fares

One toy train service operates on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam to Ooty per day. There are seven stations along the route. The timetable is as follows:

  • The 56136/Mettupalayam-Ooty MG Passenger train leaves Mettupalayam at 7.10 a.m and arrives in Ooty at noon.
  • Coming back, the 56137/Ooty-Mettupalayam MG Passenger train leaves Ooty at 2 p.m. and reaches Mettupalayam at 5.35 p.m.

Both first class and second class seating are offered on the toy train. The main difference between the two is that first class has cushions and fewer seats. If you're concerned about comfort, it's worth buying a first class ticket to have a more peaceful and less cramped journey away from the crowds. A small number of unreserved tickets is also made available for purchase at the ticket counter before departure. However, they usually sell out within minutes. A fourth carriage was added to the train in 2016, due to rapidly growing demand. The train still books up quickly though, especially in summer.

The adult train fare is 30 rupees ($0.45) in second class and 205 rupees ($3) in first class, one way. The unreserved general fare is 15 rupees ($0.15) one way.

Do note that the area receives rain from both the south-west and north-east monsoons , and this commonly disrupts services.

Reintroduction of Summer Train Services

After a break of five years, special summer train services will recommence in 2018.

A "Heritage Steam Voyage" will operate between Mettupalayam and Coonoor, on Saturdays and Sundays, from March 31 to June 24. The train is officially called the  06171/Mettupalayam-Coonoor Nilagiri Summer Special . It's scheduled to depart Mettupalayam at 9.10 a.m. and reach Coonoor at 12.30 p.m., with stops at Kallar and Hillgrove. In the return direction , it will leave Coonoor at 1.30 p.m. and arrive in Mettupalayam at 4.20 p.m.

The train will have two first class carriages and one second class carriage. Be prepared to pay a lot more than the regular toy train! Tickets in first class cost 1,100 rupees ($16) for adults and 650 rupees ($10) for children. Second class costs 800 rupees ($12) for adults and 500 rupees ($8) for children. A welcome kit, souvenir, and refreshments will be provided onboard.

How to Make Reservations

Reservations for travel on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway can be made at Indian Railways computerized reservation counters or on the Indian Railways website . It's advisable to book as far ahead as possible, particularly during the peak summer season from April to June, Indian festival season (especially around Diwali vacation), and Christmas. The train fills up months in advance for these times.

The station code for Mettupalayam is MTP, and Udagamandalam (Ooty) UAM.

Specialty of nilgiri mountain railway, route of ooty toy train, the charming toy train, other attractions offered by nilgiri mountain railway, timings and ticket fare for ooty toy train, what to know before planning the journey on ooty toy train.

Nilgiri Mountain Railway was conceptualized way back in 1854, but it did not materialize until 1899. Initially, the railway line was till Coonoor, later in 1908 it was extended till Ooty.

The locomotives used in the trains were ‘X’ class locomotives developed by Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works, Switzerland. Some of the locomotives still used are at least 50 to 80 years old. However, the newest locomotives are manufactured in India maintaining the charm and heritage of the traditional Swiss locomotives.

Initially, the entire railway line from Mettupalayam to Ooty was running on steam locomotives. But from the past few years, the steam engine got replaced by a more efficient diesel engine at Coonoor station. This is to cover the steep climb from Coonoor to Ooty .

Nilgiri Mountain Railway is the only rack railway in India. Rack railway is a method of making a train climb steep railway using a toothed rack and pinion mechanism invented by a Swiss engineer called Dr. Roman Abt. The bottom of the trains are fitted with pinions that mesh with the racks on the railway line that runs between the tracks.

Nilgiri Mountain Railway uses Abt rack and pinion mechanism to cover the distance between Mettupalayam and Coonoor. From Coonoor to Ooty, the railway line is diesel power engine.

Nilgiri mountain railway is a stretch of 46 kilometers from Mettupalayam to Udhagamandalam with 16 tunnels , 108 curves and 250 big and small bridges. At Mettupalayam, the railway line is only at 325 meters altitude from sea level, but as the train progresses on its journey, it climbs a height of 2218 meters altitude at Fern Hill. Ooty is 2203 meters altitude, slightly below that of Fern Hill.

The train has 7 passenger stops and 5 water stops on the way. Water stops are the places where the train stops to fill water for the engine. The passenger stations between Mettupalayam and Udagamandalam are Coonoor, Wellington, Aravankadu, Ketti, and Lovedale.

The train takes about 5 hours uphill from Mettupalayam to Ooty and 3 1/2 hours downhill from Ooty to Mettupalayam. Coonoor is somewhere in the middle at the distance of 3 1/2 kilometers uphill from Mettupalayam.

There is only one train that runs between Mettupalayam and Ooty, however there are three passenger trains that run between Coonoor and Ooty. During the peak season of April to June, Nilgiri Mountain Railways run an extra train between Mettupalayam and Ooty.

A view of the Nilgiri valley from Ooty toy train.

The Ooty Toy Train is aptly named, as its small, blue and cream-colored coaches resemble toy trains. The vintage locomotives that pull these carriages are steam-powered, adding an old-world charm to the experience. However, these are replaces with diesel engines now due to ecological reasons.

The rhythmic chugging of the engine, the hissing of steam, and the distinctive whistle all add to the nostalgic ambiance as the train meanders through the hills. The coaches are equipped with large windows, allowing you to soak in the panoramic views and capture memorable photographs.

Apart from the spectacular train journey, Nilgiri mountain railway offers other attractions that you don’t want to miss on your Ooty trip. The best part of these attractions is that they are free and you can just walk in and view the displays and locomotives.

Ooty Mountain railway booking

When I reached Mettupalayam, People were in the queue for getting on unreserved Class. Mettupalayam railway station is not big, has 3 Platforms, and a small snack stall that sells south Indian food. There were boards on the Platform that indicates FC or General Class of Carriages to board the train.

Nilgiri Mountain Railway has No Toilets on board, so better you use the waiting room’s toilet before boarding the train. Also being a toy train, keep your expectations low with services and food onboard. The ticket Checker will check everyone’s ticket with ID before the departure. The train carriages were Blue and cream that were looking beautiful with surrounding greenery. Everyone was clicking Pictures before the train departure and I too clicked a few.

The train started on time and left behind the Mettupalayam. The scenery was changing to beautiful lush green tea estates, mountains, and lush green valleys. The train was stopped for 2 water stoppages before arriving at Coonoor. As it was an early morning train ride, the sun was rising from the valley, which I could see at one of the water stoppages. At every stoppage, People start to get out to click the surrounding and the train itself.

As the train reaches to Hill Grove station, you will come across beautiful tea estates, waterfalls, even train stations are so picture-perfect to click them! The Coonoor is midway between Mettupalayam and Ooty, I reached Coonoor by 10 AM. Coonoor railway station is small, built-in colonial-style Blue building and there was a small snack shop on the station. People take snacks and tea from there while engine was changed. During my 3 Days in Ooty, I stayed at Coonoor for 2 nights and I took a ride from Ooty to Coonoor one evening.

The Ooty Railway station is also very small and located near the Ooty Bus stand. This time I bought a General Class ticket at the last moment, I was lucky enough to get the seat. The toy train from Ooty to Coonoor, famously known as joy ride also has First Class and Second Class carriages. Wow, this looks like such a fun little train ride. I love traveling by train so I would definitely want to do this. Very helpful information and doesn’t seem too expensive

Wow this reminds me of the famous blue train in Sri Lanka! So cool. It definitely deserves more hype.

As soon as the toy train pulls out of the station, passengers are transfixed by the spectacular mountain scenery surrounding them. The train track winds through rolling green hills, plunges into remote valleys, and passes by verdant farmland and forests, offering views that are breathtaking in their beauty. With its many twists and turns, the jerky train ride also evokes thrill and delight in passengers.

The toy train in Ooty journey is thus an unforgettable experience - not just visually stunning but also adventurous due to the small train negotiating steep inclines and sharp bends. With many incredible things to do in Ooty , the sensation of riding this narrow-gauge railway cannot be compared to any other train ride in India or elsewhere.

History of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway / Ooty Toy Train

The toy train in Ooty has a long and fascinating history dating back to the 19th century. Originally constructed by the Madras Railway Company, this narrow-gauge mountain railway was opened in 1899 to connect the hill station of Ooty with the plains. The 46-mile journey begins at Mettupalayam and passes through verdant hills, tea estates, forests, and rural villages before reaching Ooty.

This route, with its vintage locomotives, winding tracks, tunnels, bridges and quaint small stations, provides a picturesque transit from Ooty to Cooner through the Nilgiri hills. The toy train travels very leisurely, taking about 6 hours to cover the distance. Along the way, passengers can soak in the natural beauty of the landscape and observe life in the traditional hill villages.

Recognizing its cultural and historical significance, UNESCO declared the Nilgiri Mountain Railway a World Heritage Site in 2005. The railway remains an integral mode of transportation in the region. The toy train journey retains an old-world charm and adventurous spirit for tourists, continuing as a popular excursion that offers memorable views of the Blue Mountains. Riding this unique mountain rail route is indeed an unforgettable experience.

The Picturesque Journey on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway

You wouldn’t disagree with me if I tell that the Toy train is by far one of the biggest attractions in Ooty. And why not? It summarizes the essence of Nilgiris – lush green tea estates, towering Nilgiri/Eucalyptus trees, beautiful bridges on which the train chugs, countless tunnels where darkness consumes the space and leads to light at the end. These and many memories which make this a very special journey. It’s not just the scenery that soothe the eye - the smell of fresh Eucalyptus, the sound of train chugging slowly along the track, cool breeze that hits your face and send the hair flying back – everything makes this a special ride.

We missed this one on our first visit to Ooty. So, this time, we made a point to experience this one-of-a-kind train ride. And I’m so glad we did!

The wooden chairs with frail cushion seats in first class, oil painted walls with a mesh above to rest the luggage. Rattling windows whose glass pane had to be lifted strategically to be closed. The slow sound of train, old fashioned interiors and a ride amidst the jungle - surely transported me in time as to how it must have been 50 years back!

Some practical information about Ooty toy train:

• The old world feel of the toy train has been preserved and the do not expect the coaches to be ultra modern. Though they are not broken and shattered – coaches are in good condition and safe enough to travel. The alterations done are minimal and it gives a good idea of how things were back then.

• The train runs in a very slow pace. It is nice in the beginning, but later you might get impatient. Don’t worry, just look out of the window. Varying landscapes and changing scenery will keep you occupied and after a while, you will get settled and miss the ride once its over.

• It might be sunny and warm before alighting the train, but I warn you! Carry something warm – you shall be passing in the middle of forest, overlooking tea gardens, moving past small creeks and waterfalls and the temperatures are going to drop down for sure. Be prepared!

Booked ticket via IRCTC for ooty to coonoor, my journey is next week but having waiting list no. 7 and 8, what are the chances that it will get confirmed by 9th march? bdw my coonoor to ooty ticket is confirmed.. any guidance for me?

Good View and an amazing experience. I traveled by first class. Prior booking is needed during season time. If you are going from Coonoor to Ooty then the left side offers you better views than the right side and from Ooty to Coonoor then Right Side offers excellent views. The journey is around 1.5 hours and quite cheap. The train journey is a must experience in Ooty. Plan ahead and book via IRCTC. Some windows don't have locks so be careful of the windows falling on you.

The toy train journey is definitely an enjoyable experience with stunning views. The train is always fully packed with people travel with a lot of luggage. Booking needs to be done at least 2 months in advance. Better to avoid Mettupalayam to Coonoor sector as it has only one service a day.One can prefer train journey either Ooty to Coonoor or Coonoor to Ooty.

It was a pleasant experience to board toy train from Coonoor and go to Ooty. We were standing in a queue and was waiting to get the 1st class ticket. But since it's a limited number hence we get the ticket for normal seating. The main difference between 1st and 2nd class is 1st class has full seats where 8-10 person accommodate whereas in normal class it was a 2 seated chairs. We boarded the train and enjoyed our journey travelling through overlooking the scenic tea gardens, mountains and waterfalls. Its a must to do whenever you visit Coonoor or Ooty.

Nilgiri Mountain Train is one of the beautiful rides to experience in Ooty. You will definitely enjoy the Toy Train Ride and which gives a memorable experience. You can book the tickets through IRCTC Website. We did that 3 months earlier to the trip and there remained only last 2 tickets left. The tickets must be reserved beforehand else you would waste time standing in long queue. The view is excellent. However, since we had not got the window seat on the side of view.We were clearly able to see the view of the other side and enjoy it. Also we preferred going from Ooty to Connor which was approximately an hour and a half ride. I think the second class coach is good enough as even in first class the seats are not very comfortable. The experience is awesome as it is a heritage train and I think everyone should try to enjoy this ride.

Toy Train Journey is the better scenic route to travel from Ooty to Coonoor. It is recommended to book the ticket in advance during season time otherwise you have to stand in a long queue to buy a general ticket.

We started our train trip at morning between Ooty and Connor Morning train is best to experience the nature. It usually gets dark early in monsoon and winters it was the nice background to enjoy the nature with good frames of nature.

Toy train journey through beautiful tunnels, bridges and curves is really a great experience.Try to get a seat at window side to view the nice sceneries and to enjoy the views of largest Ketti valley. But getting the ticket during season time is really a big task.Book the toy train one and half month before your toy train trip date to avoid the last minute disappointments.

Dont miss this oppertunity if you visit ooty see the nature of god one has to see in lifetime to pray almighty god.

Toy Trains, Tea Estates, Gardens & Places to visit in Ooty

I have fond memories of riding the blue train, visiting tea estates, gardens, and exploring other places to visit in Ooty. Also known as Udhagamandalam, Ooty is a resort town in the Western Ghats mountains, in South India. Founded by the British Raj as a summer resort, this area in Tamil Nadu is known as the Queen of Hill Stations in the South and is one of my favorites destinations growing up!

WHAT IS IN THIS POST

10 Best Places to visit in Ooty

Ooty offers a respite from the scortching summers of Chennai and I remember visiting a few times with family, taking that blue train. One trip was with my Girl scout group when we stayed in the Youth Hostel and went on hikes. Watching the mist lift in morning with cup of coffee, looking for fresh carrots just pulled out of the ground (sold in small kisosk by the road), walks near the lake are some of my favorite memories from this mountain resort town or hill station in South India.

Botanical Garden, one of my favorite places to visit in Ooty

One of the first places I like to visit in Ooty is the expansive Botanical Garden. The 50-acre garden features more than 600 species of plants and flowers, has water features, and a nice lush lawn. The garden holds an annual flower show, a two-day event conducted in May to showcase flower sculptures, floral artistry, and craftsmanship. It is one of the top attractions in Ooty and plan to spend 2 to 3 hours.

Ooty Botanical Garden has a great selection of plants and flowers I haven’t seen anywhere else in India.

Rose Garden

The  Rose Garden  is situated on the lower slopes of the Elk Hill on the North-Western side, facing the town of Ooty. Located about 1 Km from the Udhagamandalam Railway Junction and Bus Terminus, it is one of those places you just have to visit in Ooty especially during the rose season!

Rose Park has about 20,000 rose plants and over 2000 varieties. The best place to get a view of the entire park is from the Nila Maadam viewpoint, terraced patio. The garden is maintained by the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department and often has rose plants for sale.

Ooty Lake & Boathouse

The lake is probably the top attraction in Ooty and one of those places that you can’t miss. This artificial lake was formed back in 1824 and fishing was the major activity in this lake. These days, Tourism Development Corporation of Tamilnadu runs the Boating.

Ooty Lake & Boathouse | Outside Suburbia

It is something you want to do at least once so you can say you have done it! I like the peddle boats and just walking around the lake. Kids will like the area since it has some activities like bumper cars, horse rides and a mini train.

Located on the fringes of the Ooty Lake, is a deer park where you can see Chital Deer and Sambhal Deer. It is one of the high altitude  Animal Park  in India and a great place to see the flora and fauna of Ooty.

Other things to do in Ooty

Ooty is a popular honeymoon destination in South India. You can spend a week in Ooty or get away for a quick weekend. You can check out most of the popular attractions, see the sights in Ooty and Coonoor in two three days.

Whether you visit all the places or do nothing at all and just enjoy the scenic views, go for walks among mist-clad hills, smell the roses and just take it easy, Ooty will make for a memorable trip!

Visit Tea Estates & Tea Museum in Nilgiris

Sitting on the slopes of Nilgiris is one of my favorite places to visit in Ooty – a tea museum and tea estate. If you are a tea lover, you will want to add this to your list of things to do in Ooty! You can walk through the estate, take some photos, sip some piping hot tea.

10 Best Places to visit in and around Ooty | Outside Suburbia

At the Tea Museum, you will learn some facts about tea, like, its origin, its evolution over time. There is a small fee to visit the factory and museum but you can taste some masala tea at the end of the tour!

Address: Dodabetta Road, Mel Koddapmund, Ooty.

Ride the Toy Train

No trip to Ooty is complete without a scenic ride on the toy train as we call them.  It is called the Nilgiri mountain railway these days and still runs on a steam railway line just like it did in 1908. The charming blue train with its wooden coaches and large windows goes through tea estates, bridges and tunnels.  It is a slow train based on the rack and pinion system similar to the ones in Srilanka and Switzerland .

Nilgiri Mountain Railway and other things to do in Ooty | Outside Suburbia

From Mettupalayam, you can take the heritage toy train (Nilgiri Mountain Railway) as it meanders over green hills and rolling tea estates.  The journey takes about five hours to reach Ooty. It leaves Mettupalayam at 7.45 am and reaches Ooty around noon. The train passes over 26 viaducts, and twist and blends through 13 tunnels. Have cameras ready to photograph the viaduct between Kallar and Adderley. After a steep climb, the train enters Coonoor.

If you want a shorter ride, take the train from Coonoor to Udhagamandalam or vice versa. Either way, you are treated to some spectacular scenery!

There are plenty of other places to visit near Ooty like Upper Bhavani Lake , Pykara Lake , and the many waterfalls and wildlife sanctuaries. There is also a Toda settlement that you can visit. The home, rather huts are shaped in the form of semi-barrels without any windows. It is located about 5 or 6 kms from the town of Ooty.

Doddabetta Peak

Doddabetta Peak is a major attraction near Ooty. Located at an altitude of 2,623 meters, it lies at the junction of western and eastern ghats, around 10 kms away from Ooty. Doddabetta peak is the highest peak in Tamil Nadu and offers you breathtaking views from the top.

On the top of Doddabetta sits a telescope house that offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscapes. There are a few hiking/trekking trails nearby that are popular with visitors. It is a great place to come in the evening to see a sunset on a clear day.

About 14 km from Ooty, you will find Kalhasti waterfall, in the Kalhatty village. Water descends down from a height of 120-122 feet and you might spot a wide variety of hill birds and other wildlife here including Panthers, Bisons, Wild Buffaloes, Wild Dogs, Spotted Deers, Sambars and monkeys.

Laying the railway track was not an easy task because of the steep gradient and involved brilliant minds behind its designing and development.

Though the project was proposed in 1854 it became operational in 1899 connecting Mettupalayam to Coonoor. It was in the year 1908, that the line was extended till Udagamandalam. UNESCO has designated Nilgiri Mountain Railways as single World Heritage Site in India . The old fashioned steam locomotives of Ooty Toy Train have been replaced by diesel locomotives on the route from Coonoor to Ooty.
