Take a nostalgic trip down candy lane to Sweeties of Arizona, where you and the kids can enjoy nostalgic candies like Jelly Belly jellybeans, Pez, and so many more! This family owned company has been in operation for over 60 years, and its 5,000 square feet outlet is filled to the brim with every sort of candy, from old time classics to the up to date goodies of today.

This vast outdoor train museum has an incredible collection of locomotives, rolling stock, and other cool trains like freight cars, passenger cars, and cabooses.

Admission to the Arizona Railway Museum includes a self-guided walking tour of the vast rail yard where the trains are marked with signage about their history. Almost 10 of the cars have been restored, and the interior of those train cars can be toured. There's also a central museum building (an old station depot building) with smaller railroad artifacts.

It's fascinating to learn about the important history Arizona has with the railroads at this Chandler tourist attraction. Trains provided all the goods and products for 100 years before the automobile. It was also a key stop on the transcontinental railroad route, so anything going to California went through Arizona.

You can visit the museum on weekends; it's open from 10am to 4pm, but closes down for the hot summer between June and September.

Anyone from Arizona knows the Bashas' grocery store chain and the son of the founder, Eddie Basha, Jr., amassed a large Western art collection which is open to visitors. Housed within the grocery chain's corporate headquarters, the Zelma Basha Salmeri Gallery features what is formally known as the Eddie Basha Collection of Western American and American Indian Art.

The collection, one of the largest private collections of such materials in the world, concentrates on two areas: modern Western American Art (lots of cowboys and horses) and modern American Indian Art (with American Indians as both artist and subject).

The massive collection includes more than 3,500 pieces. You'll see art in multiple media on the walls, as well as beautiful objects like bowls, baskets, pottery, and jewelry.

The gallery is open from Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm, but visitors are asked to call ahead, as it sometimes closes for special events.

This city-owned facility just may be the country's best public pool, and it's a great thing to do with kids if you're visiting Chandler during the hot summer. Not only is there an Olympic-sized, heated competition pool with diving boards, you can also float down the lazy river , rocket down either of the two waterslides, or get soaked under the 725-gallon tumble-bucket.

Little kids have their own play area, and everyone can use the giant water cannons. There are always lanes reserved for lap swimming, so adults can get some exercise, while the kids have fun.

June, July, and August, they're open every day, with more limited evening and weekend hours during the springtime. The pool normally closes between November and June.

Admission for kids is just $1, adult admission is $2.25 (everyone must pay, even non-swimmers). Lifeguards are on duty; they have changing rooms and lockers, as well as a small café. You are allowed to bring your own snacks, a brown-bag lunch, and drinks in a small, six-pack-sized cooler.

Rawhide is a whole Old West town recreated on 160 acres of the Sonoran Desert in Wild Horse Pass. Sometimes used as a movie set, it's only open to the public for special events (concerts, food festivals, and similar things) and for annual signature holiday events, but it's a very cool place to visit.

Rawhide is like a whole small town with 18 different areas and venues to explore. Aside from the Old West Town, there's a Mexican village, as well as a large rodeo arena. During events, you can do things like rock climbing, gold panning, or testing your aim at the shooting gallery. There are also stagecoach and hay wagon rides.

Check the Rawhide website to see if there are any special events on the schedule, as they are held frequently, and most are open to the public.

This large theater venue with 1,500 seats is located in downtown Chandler. The Chandler Center for the Arts hosts a seriously wide array of performers appealing to almost everyone. Recent headliners have included Weird Al, Martina McBride, and a Led Zeppelin tribute band. There are also symphony performances, dance and performing arts, comedy, and magic.

In addition to the main auditorium, there are two smaller venues also located in the theater building, which also host a wide selection of programming in both English and Spanish.

The building also houses a beautiful art collection showcased in two different art galleries, in support of the local visual arts community.

The Gallery at CCA is free and open from 10am to 5pm, Monday through Friday, and Saturdays from 12pm to 5pm.

Downtown Chandler Community Partnership

The City of Chandler partners with the DCCP, a 501(c) (6) not-for-profit corporation, whose mission is to mobilize leadership and resources to advance the development of Downtown Chandler as a regional destination for shopping, dining, living, culture, and the arts. It works on behalf of the Enhanced Municipal District, created in 2006, to provide enhanced marketing and promotion, safety, and beautification of the downtown area beyond what is done by the City of Chandler and downtown merchants.  The District is bordered on the north by Chandler Blvd; the south by Frye Road; the east by Delaware Street; and the west through Dakota, California and Oregon streets.

We booked through Expedia and were a bit thrown off by the security requirements to complete the reservation. I tried to call the hotel to ask some questions, but the number available on Google was not valid. This raised further concern. I was able to get in touch with the owner via email and he was very helpful and answered all my questions. We had no issues with our reservation. You can tell the hotel is a remodeled motel; but it was charming and priced within reason. We enjoyed our room and the location of the hotel. We would book again.

Don't recommend at all ... booked through super.com, a very scammy travel booking website. I accidentally booked the wrong day and between super.com and the motel (which I physically drove too) I was not able to rectify the situation at all. If you book on super.com, they will change the booking date when you click through the screens and if you aren't careful (they give you a very short time limit to complete the booking of literally seconds!) you are SOL. You would think the property would be helpful and understanding but the Aloha has no customer service whatsoever ... so you are doubly screwed. I tried several times to contact the Aloha with no response. Poorly managed motel with a scammy business partnership with super.com. I can wholeheartedly recommend the Doubletree by Hilton in Tempe. Fantastic property.

It's a decent place. Nice rooms, outside seems to be kept up. If you ended up here probably trying to save a couple bucks. I will definitely be spending the money next time I travel trough here. If you don't mind tweekers pacing back and forward at all hrs ,constant tweekers wigging out and being disruptive all night ,then this is the place for you. It was a good price for the night. You definitely get what you payed for. Will be paying the$120 plus a night at the Marriott down the street next time. Beware.

I rented this place through Airbnb. I absolutely loved my stay. Even though it's on a busy road with a High School across the street, I couldn't hear anything inside my room which was close to the street. It was very comfy and quite. The host responded quickly to any questions I had. They have free washer and dryers for you to use. Vending machines with snacks, drinks and other goodies. The whole property was very clean. The rooms had everything you would need. I will definitely come back to this location when I come back to Arizona. I forgot to mention they also have a pool. We didn't use it, but it looked very clean.

We got a room for 3 days at the Aloha Motel in Chandler. After jumping through all of their registration hoops. Which was this side of Homeland Security, we finally got here. The room was super cute but it smelled like an old motel room, which we could get past. What I couldn't get past was the paper thin walls and listening to both neighbors televisions and all 3 of us fighting for our own volume. and then one neighbor talked at full volume all night long. To say this was my worst night stay at any hotel/motel would be an understatement! Although our room was paid for, we booked at a different hotel and left. DO NOT EVER STAY HERE!!!

Bad cancellation policy...I lost over $300...stay away from this place and don't fall for travel insurance...

What lurks behind the doors! Very chic motel with yesteryear DNA. With only 26 rooms, The Aloha is accessible to downtown Chandler and only about a 30-minute drive to Scottsdale. Originally constructed in 1950 on a busy thoroughfare, The Aloha had a simple design; a traditional u-shaped motor court with rooms surrounding a swimming pool and an office with manager's quarters. The entire property has a light and welcoming vibe. The soft colors relax you. And the simplicity of the property is so nice in these complex times. Basically, you have a room, a swimming pool, a laundry room, and a parking space. What more do you need? Having said that, the rooms are anything but understated. Sure, they embrace minimalism but they have made such good use of the space! I've never seen hotel rooms this quaint that maximize the space. From small kitchenettes to even dining tables, the design and decor touches used in the room are inspiring. Given the Hawaiian theme, it is not surprising that beach energy is found throughout the rooms, including photos of Hawaii. It's a place where you could stay several days without going stir-crazy. Yup, I'm ready to move in! While The Aloha doesn't have an on-site restaurant, Little Caesar's is next door and across the street, there is a local pizza place and a sports bar. It's nice that guests don't have to go too far for a meal or drink. Chandler High School is across the street and it looked really cool and worth exploring as well. Newly opened, the room rates are incredible for what you are getting. I could see this being a good choice for larger groups meeting for a reunion or wedding. Again, with only 26 rooms, you'd want to book early but The Aloha is a wonderful landing pad for those exploring the Valley or even locals craving a simple staycation. The swimming pool isn't huge but that is part of its appeal, too. Just mellow vibes throughout.

This is the worst hotel I've ever been to. There is no front office. We got to the hotel after having ridden in the car all day. It was after 9:30 PM. Another person was standing by his car and couldn't get into his room. I called the "owner" who is hard to understand and lives in Arkansas (the hotel is in Chandler, Arizona). He said he had sent me an email yesterday on how to regoster. I looked through all of my emails, even spam, and there was nothing from the Aloha. He said it was too bad, we couldn't get into a room, and he would not give us a refund. The only reason I tried the hotel is because it was AAA recommended. I am placing a complaint with AAA. We are currently driving to another hotel (at 10:10 PM). This one has people on the premises, thank goodness. We are exhausted from hours of travel... be warned!!!

I thought I was booking a one night stay at an actual hotel through a 3rd party site. When I arrived to check-in, there was no office. I called the phone number listed on the 3rd party confirmation and a muffled voice picked up- it was not identified as a business. I told her I was trying to check-in. After telling her multiple times that I could not understand due to muffling, she told me someone would text me. When I got the text I learned that this was not a hotel but an Airbnb and not only did I need to fill out online forms to complete my stay, but I would also have a hold of $200 on my credit card for 5-7 days after my stay AND pay an additional $56.25 cleaning fee on top of the rate of the third party booking site! Overall from arrival to getting into a room, my "check-in" process was almost an hour. This was not time or money I had intended on. Once inside, the room is cute but furnished cheaply. The kitchen table and nightstands were visibly dirty, the bed was super hard with flimsy bedding and the walls so thin they provide one pair of earplugs. The second guest just has to suffer through hearing the neighbors' TV at 3am.

Had a wonderful 3 night stay at this absolutely adorable place! We will definitely be staying here again.

Four Places to Hike (or Walk) through the Sonoran Desert in Chandler, AZ

A desert hike is one of the best ways to learn about and gain an appreciation for the Sonoran Desert, and if you’re in Chandler, you don’t have to go far to hit the trails. Several good hiking and walking trails are either in Chandler or a short drive away.

Before you head out, though, take a few precautions , no matter what time of the year. Always wear close-toed shoes (no sandals or flip flops-- you don't want to get pricked!), apply sunscreen, and bring plenty of water.

South Mountain Park

• Hours: 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. (Trails remain open until 11 p.m.)

At nearly 17,000 square acres, South Mountain Park is the largest municipally-owned park in the nation and boasts more than 50 miles of crisscrossing trails . If you have time for only one hike here, consider the Holbert Trail. The 2.5-mile, sometimes challenging trek begins at South Mountain Environmental Education Center off of Central Avenue and ends at Dobbins Lookout, where you’ll be rewarded with one of the Valley’s best views of downtown Phoenix.

Or, take the 1-mile Kiwanis Trail, one of the park’s most popular trails since it can accommodate beginning hikers but also connects to the more challenging Telegraph Pass and National trails. As you hike Kiwanis Trail, watch for two rock wall dams built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.

You can also access the National Trail from Pima Canyon, near 49 th Street and Guadalupe Road. Although you probably won’t want to hike the entire 14.5-mile trail, it links up to most other trails as it traverses the entire length of the park.

San Tan Mountain Regional Park

Located south of Queen Creek, this regional park flies under the radar of most visitors—and even many locals! Because there are fewer people on the trails, you’re more likely to spot wildlife such as javelinas, coyotes, and Gila monsters than you would be in other parks, and depending on the trail you take, you’ll feel like you’re a million miles away from civilization.

If you’re looking for a quieter trail, try the relatively easy Moonlight Trail, which winds a little more than a mile through the scenic Sonoran Desert from the visitor center. Or, ask for directions to the Rock Peak Wash Trailhead. From there, take the Rock Peak Wash Trail to the 4-mile Malpais Trail. (The total hike is 6 miles.)

Another option is the Goldmine Trail. You’ll encounter other hikers along the way—it’s one of the most frequented trails in the park—but the 2.5-mile, one-way trail offers two vantage points for city views. Don’t miss the graves of two miners at the north end of the trail.

After hiking, pay your respects to the Arizona residents who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan at the park’s memorial and check out the Desert Tortoise Habitat at the visitor center.

Veterans Oasis Park

For an urban Sonoran Desert experience, you can’t beat Veterans Oasis Park in Chandler. The park has 4.5 miles of trails, including a paved walkway around the 5-acre community fishing lake that’s perfect for strollers, wheelchairs, and anyone who prefers walking on even surfaces.

Twenty-five hundred feet of this paved route doubles as the solar system walk with 14 signs representing the sun, eight planets, dwarf planets, comets, and more. It’s a great opportunity to teach kids just how incredibly big our solar system is— every foot traveled on the walk represents 1.5 million miles in space.

No need to limit yourself to the pavement, though. Dirt trails range further into the 113-acre park, meandering past the butterfly and hummingbird habitat, two elevated viewing areas, and a waterfall.

If you’re a birder, Veterans Oasis Park is one of the Valley’s premier birding destinations. Watch for the 153 species of bird that have been documented here, including herons, egrets, and quail. New to birding? On the first Saturday of every month from November through April, the Desert Rivers Audubon Society leads free, guided bird watching tours through the park from 8 a.m. to noon.

Before you leave, stop by the park’s Chandler Nature Center to learn more about the Sonoran desert and pick up a Southwestern souvenir, including books and native seeds, from the gift shop.

Paseo Vista Recreation Area

For nearly 30 years, the space now occupied by Paseo Vista Recreation Area was a landfill. Today, it not only includes more than a mile of walking trails but has a dog park, archery range, playground, and disc golf course. You’ll also get a bird’s-eye view of the East Valley from its 40-foot slopes.

Paseo Vista Recreation Area also offers access to the Paseo Trail, a 6.5-mile stretch along the Consolidated Canal. The east side of the canal is paved and intended for people who want to walk, jog, or bicycle while the west side is unpaved and open to equestrian traffic as well.

As you stand in the park and look towards the Paseo Trail , you can choose to take the trail either south (to the left) or north (to the right). If you choose to go south, you’ll have roughly two miles to the end of the trail; if you opt to go north, you’ll have approximately 4.5 miles of trail.

Purchasing a home is one of the most important investments there is. More than a place to live, homeownership is an asset with the potential to tremendously rise in value. But with home prices reaching record heights, affordability plays a huge role for buyers.

The typical home value in the United States was $359,402 in April, 4.4% higher than the year before.

High mortgage rates are also making monthly payments more expensive; as of May 23, the 30-year fixed mortgage rate sits at 6.94%.

Although home prices have inflated all across the U.S., there are some cities that command a higher price tag than others. Location, size, age, and condition are all contributing factors to home value.
