1. What are the Top 10 Fun Facts about Pandas? +

1). Pandas are good at climbing trees.

2). Pandas are good swimmers.

3). Pandas are bears that do not hibernate.

4). Pandas are carnivores but mainly eat bamboo (99% of their diet).

5). Pandas occasionally eat eggs, fish, and even small mammals.

6). Pandas spend 10-16 hours a day eating bamboo.

7). Pandas poo 40 times daily (100 droppings per day; about 20kg poo).

8). Adult pandas can weigh up to 125 kg, while newborn pandas weigh around 200g.

9). Pandas have a sixth finger, called a "Pseudo-thumbs" (helpful like a hand).

10). The name "panda" originally referred to the red panda until the discovery of the giant panda.

2. Why do people like pandas? Why do the Chinese love pandas? +

Pandas are adored for their cuteness . They have a unique appearance that is round and fluffy, making them stand out from other animals. But why do we love pandas? Perhaps it is because of the way they eat, which resembles the way humans sit on the floor. Or maybe it's because of their distinctive eyes, with eye patches that make their eyes look bigger, which people find attractive because it reminds them of children.

For the Chinese, giant pandas have long been a symbol of peace and friendship, which aligns perfectly with Chinese values and worldviews. Additionally, the black and white color of the panda is consistent with the cultural beliefs of China , specifically the connection to the Taiji Yin and Yang.

Pandas are very interesting to watch due to their unique black and white coat, bamboo diet, and "funny" behavior like rolling down hills, sleeping for over 10 hours a day, and "panda kung fu" wrestling. Their playful cub personas also attract much attention.

3. Why are pandas endangered? What is the biggest threat to pandas? +

Giant pandas are one of the most beloved animals in the world. They are bears native to central China and are easily recognizable by their large, distinctive black patches around their eyes, over their ears, and across their rotund body. Giant pandas are endangered primarily due to habitat loss, poaching, and low reproductive rates.

Habitat loss due to human activities is the main reason why giant pandas are endangered. Deforestation, urbanization, and infrastructure development have greatly reduced their natural habitat in China . As their mountain forest habitats were cleared for farming and development, panda populations became isolated and vulnerable. They have a very specialized bamboo diet, so the loss of habitat also meant the loss of their food source.

Pandas are difficult to mate because female pandas only ovulate once a year. Not only that but the window that a male panda has to inseminate the female while she has an egg ready to go is only about 36 to 40 hours.

The adult giant panda has very few natural enemies. One of the known enemies of the giant panda is the snow leopard, which may seize a baby panda that has wandered away from its mother, or a pack of wild dogs may also capture a wandering cub. However, humans are the greatest threat to pandas in China due to habitat destruction and poaching.

4. Where can I see giant pandas? How many giant pandas are left in the wild? +

Most giant pandas live in a few mountain ranges in central China . The best way to see pandas is at conservation and breeding centers in China, such as the Chengdu panda Base, Dujiangyan Panda Valley, Dujiangyan Panda Base, Wolong Panda Base, Bifengxia Panda Base, and Shaanxi Foping Panda Base . You can view various pandas, including newborn cubs, in indoor-outdoor enclosures and nurseries.

Zoos around the world also have some pandas, but their populations are limited. Countries like the US, Canada, Belgium, France, Thailand, and others have pandas in zoos. For example, giant pandas can be seen at zoos in the US, such as the San Diego Zoo, Zoo Atlanta, and the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, DC.

It is possible to see giant pandas in the wild , particularly in Giant Panda National Park, although it can be challenging as they are rare and elusive animals. There are approximately 1,864 giant pandas left in the wild, mostly in the mountainous regions of Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu in China . However, their numbers are slowly increasing from around 1,000 wild pandas in the 1980s due to conservation efforts.

Furthermore, research shows that 85% of wild giant pandas reside in Sichuan province , China. The Chengdu section of the Giant Panda National Park, which is the habitat of giant pandas in the wild, is home to 73 wild giant pandas, according to the fourth national giant panda survey.

5. What do giant pandas eat? How many hours a day do pandas eat? +

As you may know, pandas love to eat bamboo. However, pandas only eat about 42 bamboo species, including arrow bamboo and wood bamboo. Each species has a life cycle and will flower and die off every 20 to 40 years, depending on the species. Pandas need to have other species available to eat or be able to migrate to a different area when the bamboo dies off.

As 99% of a panda's diet is bamboo, they prefer bamboo shoots, stems, and leaves, especially shoots. Pandas are picky and clever, as they eat different types and parts of bamboo according to the season. In spring and summer, when bamboo shoots are plentiful, pandas like eating different kinds of shoots; in autumn, pandas eat more bamboo leaves; in winter, pandas prefer bamboo stems, which include more nutrients.

Although bamboo is the giant panda's favorite food, they also eat fruit (such as apples) and vegetables (such as carrots, pumpkins, and fungus). Pandas can eat small animals on occasion, such as fish, bamboo rats, or musk deer fawns.Pandas are carnivores, however, they are primarily recognized as vegetarian now.

Besides, pandas drink fresh water from rivers and streams once or twice a day. Because bamboo shoots are more than 60 percent water, pandas can get water while eating bamboo shoots.

By the way, baby pandas drink their mother's milk until they are six months old and then start eating bamboo. Pandas have very little breast milk, so captive panda cubs are fed milk made from a mixture of milk, powdered milk, and various vitamins.

With very little nutritional value in bamboo, pandas must eat 23–40 kg of bamboo every day (26 to 38% of their body weight) to meet their energy needs. To obtain this much food, a panda must spend 10 to 16 hours a day foraging and eating. The rest of their time is spent mostly sleeping and resting.

6. Why do pandas look so lazy? Do pandas get tired easily? +

Pands often appear lazy due to their slow movements and tendency to sleep for long periods of time. However, this is actually a natural behavior for pandas. Pandas are herbivores in the body of carnivores, and with a diet of 99% bamboo, they have developed adaptations for dealing with their low-calorie food, including taking it easy.

That is why pandas look so lazy – it allows them to save energy, and the lazy lifestyle allows pandas to survive on their low-quality diet. The daily energy expenditure values for giant pandas are substantially lower than those for koalas, for example, and more akin to those of three-toed sloths. Pandas have a low metabolic rate, which means that they require less energy than other animals of their size. Besides, pandas conserve their energy by moving slowly and sleeping for up to 14 hours a day.

While pandas may look lazy, they are actually strong and agile animals. They are excellent climbers and can run at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour when necessary. Pandas also have a high endurance level and can swim for long distances.

Pandas don't necessarily get tired easily, but they have evolved to conserve their energy by moving slowly and sleeping for long periods of time. This behavior is a natural adaptation to their unique diet and lifestyle.

7. Can I hold a panda cub or feed a panda? Can I volunteer with pandas? +

In general, pandas are not aggressive animals. However, mother pandas can become defensive when protecting their cubs, especially during the first few months after birth. Male pandas also spar with each other during mating season. Although pandas are often assumed to be docile, they have been known to attack humans, presumably out of irritation rather than aggression.

Direct contact with pandas is not allowed since 2018. Holding panda cubs would interfere with their care, bonding with handlers, and increase the risk of disease transmission. Additionally, feeding and interacting with pandas is left to panda keepers for the safety of both the pandas and visitors.

However, it is possible to participate in a panda volunteer tour at certain conservation centers in China . Opportunities are limited, and you can contact a tour operator to book the service ahead of time.

8. Are giant pandas a type of bear? How long do giant pandas live? +

Yes, giant pandas are a type of bear unique in China and are classified as a member of the family Ursidae.

The average lifespan of a giant panda in the wild is about 15-20 years. However, with proper care in captivity, they can live into their 30s. The oldest panda in captivity was Jia Jia, who lived to 38 years old.

9. When is the best time to visit pandas in China? +

The best time of year to visit pandas in China is during the spring and fall , when the weather is mild and the bamboo is in bloom. Spring (March-May) has pleasant temperatures, and pandas are more active during this time. In the fall, you can see baby pandas that were born in the summer.

Moreover, the best time to see the Giant Pandas is during their meal times or play times. Pandas love cool weather, so early morning before 9 o'clock is a suitable time to watch them when they are more active. For instance, you can observe their playtime from 10:30 am to 11:00 am and their lunchtime from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.

10. How long is a typical panda tour? How much does a panda tour cost? +

A panda tour can range from a half-day excursion to a multi-day trip, depending on the itinerary and activities included.

The cost of a panda tour varies depending on the length of the tour, the activities included, and the level of luxury . Prices can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars.

Typically, panda tours include visits to conservation centers (panda bases) to see and learn about the pandas. Other activities may include a panda volunteer program , a panda habitat hike, sightseeing at world heritage sites, museum visits, kid-friendly cultural activities such as Kung Fu lessons and traditional tea ceremonies, Sichuan Opera performances, Chinese meals, and tour guides.

Panda tour prices vary but average around $100-$300 per person for a full-day visit , depending on the itinerary, accommodation, and time of year.

Itinerary Quick Look

Here is a suggested itinerary. We are happy to customize a tour according to your interests.

Your private guide will be ready to meet and greet you at the arrival hall. A comfortable private car with an experienced driver will transfer you directly to your hotel. Your guide will help you to check-in.

Wander through Tian'anmen Square , the largest city square in the world, and arrive at the Forbidden City , the largest imperial palace in the world. With the help of your private guide, have a little adventure in the previous home to emperors: find some interesting places you would never find by yourself and hide away from the noise of the tour groups.

Have the Beijing-Life discovery walk in the afternoon. You will skip the touristy hutong and explore a neighborhood to discover the ordinary people's lives from their religious beliefs, daily food, hobbies, housing issues and situation in retirement.

Freshen up in the morning and start your day at the Temple of Heaven , which was the place where emperors prayed for a good harvest. Interact with the locals and join them to experience their healthy lifestyle.

Then continue to the Great Wall at Mutianyu , which is the section ranked top on TripAdvisor among all the Great Wall sections for its picturesque scenery and beautifully restored architecture.

Walk around the tranquil Summer Palace at a leisurely pace and enjoy the 300-year-old royal garden. Take a pleasant boat ride on the lake and have a stroll in the long corridors to view the exquisite paintings on the ceilings.

Enjoy some Beijing roast duck for lunch. Watch the exquisite cutting skills of the chef, taste crispy duck skin, and learn how to eat it in the correct way.

In the afternoon, you will be driven to the airport for your flight to Xi'an. Your Xi'an guide will be waiting for you and will transfer you to your hotel.

Everything in Xi'an is about history. The Terracotta Army , with each figure being unique, has guarded Emperor Qin Shi Huang's tomb since 210 BC. Have a silent conversation with the warriors and listen to their stories spanning over 2,000 years.

Then discover a local craftsman's cave dwelling and learn how to make clay warriors with your own hands.

After lunch, return to the city area and visit the 600-year-old ancient city wall .

Discover more ancient history at Xi'an History Museum and Little Wild Goose Pagoda , then head to the Muslim Quarter and wander through the alleys to taste the local Muslim cuisine. After lunch, hop onto a high-speed train for a 4-hour journey to Chengdu and experience the technological development of China.

Chengdu is the only place in the world where you can get close to giant pandas. Rather than just taking a glance at them in a zoo, you will get very close to these cuddly creatures and learn more about them during the Panda Keeper Program in Dujiangyan Panda Base.

Under the guidance of an English-speaking member of staff, you will wash the bamboo shoots and break bamboos for pandas, see a panda be fed at a very close distance, watch panda movies, and make cakes for them. Have a simple Chinese lunch with the staff in their canteen. This highest-rated experience will provide you with the memory of a lifetime.

Start your day at Jinli Old Street where you can taste authentic local snacks. Try some famous foods, such as bean jelly in chili sauce, sweet potato noodles, and Sichuan-style wontons. If you are brave enough, try a rabbit's head in chili sauce.

When you've finished eating, visit the Rice Wine Museum , a restoration of an ancient Chinese brewery cellar. Guided by a bilingual expert, you will have the opportunity to find out how the ancient brewery works, before enjoying two complimentary glasses of rice wine.

Take the bullet train to Chongqing after the tour and then check-in for a Yangtze River cruise that departs at 9 pm.

Enjoy tai chi morning exercise if you would like to (available every day).

Take a shore excursion to Fengdu Ghost City in the morning. There are many buildings built according to traditional Chinese geomancy and statues and artwork reflecting Chinese people's imaginations of the netherworld.

Enjoy the cultural activities on the ship in the afternoon and a night show — War Fires of the Three Kingdoms (optional) after dinner.

If you are interested in Chinese calligraphy and history, the optional excursion to White Emperor City is a nice choice. See 10-yuan banknote scenery, calligraphy inscriptions dating back centuries, and a famous fortress.

Cruise through the spectacular Qutang Gorge and the magnificent Wu Gorge at noon.

Enjoy a shore excursion to Shennv Stream in the afternoon, where you will take a boat to discover this tributary of the Yangtze River, with its clear water that runs southwards through deep and narrow gorges.

Enjoy the Crew Cabaret and Talent Show after dinner on the ship.

Disembark in the morning, and then join the shore excursion to the Three Gorges Dam . Getting access to the platform right by the dam, you will enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Yangtze River and the supper project of China.

You will be transferred to the tourist center in Yichang city after the tour. Your private guide and driver will wait for you there and will transfer you to the railway station on time for your bullet train journey to Shanghai.

Note: The shore excursions in the itinerary are arranged by Century Cruises . They could vary depending on the cruise you choose.

Do more than just take one or two selfies on the Bund . Travel back in time to the golden age of the Bund in the 1920s during our In-Depth Bund Culture Discovery Tour. Go into some of the old Bund buildings and listen to their stories.

Enjoy lunch and ascend the tallest building in China — Shanghai Tower . From this building, which is the highest outside of Dubai, you will not only enjoy a panoramic view of Shanghai but will also see the future of China.

After traveling around China for 11 days, you might want to do something that's relaxing or "icing on the cake" at the end of your tour. You will have some free time in the afternoon. Your guide will be happy to arrange activities according to your wishes no matter whether you want to relax, experience Shanghai fashion, appreciate art, explore folk customs, shop, or any of many other options.

Your private car, driver, and guide will transport you to the airport and take you all the way to the security gate for your convenience. Relax all the way to the airplane with us.

If you want to explore nearby areas, feel free to get some practical suggestions from your tour guide.

Arrival Ideals : At present, there are many international and domestic flights to Beijing. Besides, you can take a high speed train to this capital city from Shanghai (5-6 hrs), Xian (5.5 hrs), Guangzhou (8-9.5 hrs), etc.

Day 2 Beijing Great Wall Tour (B, L)

After breakfast, drive to Temple of Heaven , a historic site once used by emperors for sacrificial ceremonies. As you explore this grand complex of buildings and gardens, you’ll discover the rituals and beliefs of the Ming and Qing emperors, who sought divine blessings for good harvests through intricate ceremonies. Beyond its historical importance, you'll observe vibrant local life, with residents practicing Tai Chi, dancing, and engaging in various exercises among the lush pine woods.

After the Temple of Heaven visit, you'll drive approximately 70 km (about 1.5 hours) to the iconic Mutianyu Great Wall , a less-crowded but beautiful section of this World Wonder. Begin your adventure by ascending the wall via an enclosed cable car , reaching No. 14 Watchtower, your starting point for an incredible experience. Hike westward along the wall, passing through towering watchtowers and capturing breathtaking views. The trail is moderate, suitable for most fitness levels, including families with children. For the more adventurous, challenge yourself by climbing the Great Man Slope to No. 20 Watchtower, the highest point, offering an even more spectacular vista. After exploring the wonderful sightseeing, hike back to No. 14 Watchtower and descend by the enclosed cable car.

Optional Toboggan Experience: For an extra thrill at Mutianyu, consider taking the toboggan ride or the chairlift cable car to descend the Great Wall, both available at No. 6 Watchtower. Note that there might be a queue, especially during peak seasons like Chinese holidays.

Next, drive back to Beijing City and take a short stop at the Beijing Olympic Village to view its famous Bird’s Nest and Water Cube from the outside.

Lastly, be escorted back to your hotel.

Optional Night Activity: After the day's tour, treat yourself to a great dinner and taste the famous Peking Roasted Duck, a world-renowned dish with crisp skin and juicy meat.

Day 3 Beijing & High Speed Train to Xian (B, L)

After breakfast, you will start a journey through Beijing’s storied past with a brief visit to Tiananmen Square , the world's largest public plaza. This iconic site is where Chairman Mao proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China from the imposing Tiananmen Gate.

Step through Tiananmen Gate and into the heart of imperial China - Forbidden City . This sprawling palace complex, home to 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties, is a masterpiece of architecture and history. Marvel at the intricate details, from the vibrant yellow-glazed tile roofs to the elegant white marble bases. As you wander through countless rooms and courtyards, imagine the lives of emperors, empresses, and their court. Upon exiting Forbidden City, venture to the palace’s one corner watchtower, a beloved spot among photography enthusiasts.

Your Beijing tour is now about to end. Your tour guide will see you off at the Beijing West Railway Station for a high speed train trip to Xian (about 5 hours). You will be picked up by your tour guide at Xian North Railway Station and escorted to your hotel in Xian. The rest of the day is on your own to explore this ancient capital of China.

Day 4 Xian (B, L)

After breakfast, drive about 40 km to discover one of the greatest man-made wonders in the world - the Terracotta Warriors and Horses , built by the first emperor of China Qin Shihuang to protect him in his afterlife. Over 8,000 life-size warriors, horses and chariots, buried in 3 pits for more than 2,000 years until uncovered by a local farmer in 1974, form an ancient military army with complete battle units of infantry, cavalry, etc. Standing in front of these figures, one can’t help being amazed not only by the ambition of Emperor Qin Shihuang but also by the fabulous artistic skills of ancient Chinese artisans. (Before the Terracotta Warriors Museum visit, you will have a rare opportunity to make a miniature Terracotta Warrior on your own under the instruction of a local potter.)

After lunch, return to Xian to visit Da Cien Temple , a famous Buddhist sutra translation site during the Tang Dynasty. Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is the most famous building in the temple. The pagoda, rising to a height of 64.5 meters, was built by the famous Buddhist master Xuanzang to preserve classic scriptures he bought back from India during the early Tang Dynasty. Xuanzang was the prototype character for Tang Seng in the famous Chinese novel “Journey to the West”. (Note: It costs an extra 30 RMB if you want to climb up the Big Wild Goose Pagoda). After (or before) visiting the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, you will be provided an interesting experience of trying on the Hanfu which is the solemn costume of the emperors and their families, the ministers and the noble in the ancient dynasties of China. Seize this rare opportunity to take some photos to record this unique memory!

This evening you will be offered an interesting visit to Grand Tang Dynasty Ever Bright City which is a great place to walk, enjoy amazing nightscape and recall the prosperity and glory of the mighty Tang Dynasty most importantly. Seeing this area at night is totally different than during the day as the lighting is marvelous yet tastefully done.

Optional activity: Enjoy a wonderful Tang Palace Dance Show (usually from 8pm to 9pm) after (or without) a hearty dumpling dinner.

Our guests get viewed by the countless Terracotta Warriors

Day 5 Xian & High Speed Train to Chengdu (B, L)

After breakfast, start today's tour with an educational visit to the Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Xi’an Museum to learn a lot about the history and culture about the ancient city of Xi’an. They are together located in a clean and beautiful park. The Small Wild Goose Pagoda is rather smaller and 55 years younger than its “sister” - the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. Built during 707 to 709 AD, the pagoda is 43.4 meters tall with 13 tiers (originally 15 tiers), looking like a very tall rectangular pyramid. An interesting fact about the Small Wild Goose Pagoda is that the pagoda has survived nearly 70 earthquakes, and now still standing firm and sturdy. You can walk around to appreciate the beautiful design and take photos of the pagoda. Then you will go to visit Xi’an Museum which is only several minutes’ walking from the Small Wild Goose Pagoda. This museum has more than 130,000 pieces of jade relics, seals, paintings, porcelains, Buddhist statues, stone carvings and many other precious relics.

Later, go to spend a leisure time on the Ancient City Wall , the largest and best-preserved ancient city wall in China. Just like the merchants and envoys on the Silk Road thousands of years ago, you will enter the interior of the city walls through the Hanguang Gate . There you will visit a mini museum to see the real Tang Dynasty city wall ruins from over 1400 years ago, including gateways, cross-sections of the wall, and the remains of water channels. After the museum visit, get up to the city wall to enjoy a leisure stroll and pleasant panoramic views of modern Xian. Rent a bike (extra cost: 45RMB) to enjoy a relaxing cycling on the Wall is strongly recommended. The cycling routes and duration are flexible. Feel free to discuss with your tour guide. Leave the City Wall, then go to wander leisurely around the bustling and lively Muslim Quarter , a place where you can try different local snacks and explore Muslim culture.

The rest of today is free for you until get escorted to catch a high speed train to Chengdu (about 4hrs), the hometown of Giant Pandas! You will be met by local tour guide at the railway station and escorted to check in your hotel in downtown by a private comfortable vehicle. The rest of today is on your own to relax.

Day 6 Chengdu (B, L)

You will walk at leisure through the bamboo-framed paths and closely observe giant pandas of different ages eating bamboos, playing with each other, tumbling, and climbing trees. Be sure to not miss the chance to watch female pandas nursing their cubs in the nursery rooms! There is also a very informative Panda Museum where you can learn more scientific facts about Giant Pandas. Following the visit to this Panda base, you will be taken to a hidden spiritual Buddhist temple in hustling downtown Chengdu,  Wenshu Temple , where you will marvel at the exquisite Buddhist architecture, soak in the reverent atmosphere, and wander on the temple’s peaceful paths.

Chengdu is famous throughout China for its relaxing and leisurely pace and lifestyle, which will be demonstrated by a visit to the City’s  Renmin Park . Sit down, order a pot of Chinese tea, have a casual chat with your friends and watch locals indulging themselves in different kinds of folk entertainment – napping, playing mahjong, disco dancing, and giving neck massages! Yunnan Tour

As my trip is coming to an end tomorrow, I would like to express my appreciations to the following individuals who had made my trip possible and memorable.

1) Ms Rita Jiang for helping me to plan my itinerary from scratch and in my budgeting.

2) Mr Wine Wang for being a friendly driver-cum-tour guide in Kunming.

3) Mr Andy Wang for his untiring driving from Dali to Lijiang and Shangri-La for sightseeings.

Both Wine and Wang speak good English and are knowledgeable about sightseeing attractions and local authentic food outlets. I would definitely recommend them to any of my friends and travel buddies from around the world who speak only English.

Last but not least, thanks to the Government of China for granting 15-days visa free entry to China for tourists who hold Australian passports, among many other countries. It’s timely to open up China to the world to see for themselves a modern China blended in with history-rich ancient cities, towns and villages in multi-minority communities of Yunnan Province from a tourist perspective.

Once again, thanks to Rita and her team.

Best regards,

My husband and I were on the 13-Day Beijing/Xian/Guilin/Zhangjiajie/Shanghai Tour with China Discovery from 15-27 May 2024.

Overall, we had a wonderful time on our trip.

Organisation

Everything went very smoothly, just like clockwork.

In each city, on our arrival we were met by our guide who took very good care of us.

Our guides were: Beijing- Andy; Xian - Grace; Guilin - Peter; Zhangjiajie - Nina; Shanghai - Jeff.

All the guides we had were knowledgeable about their city, its history, and culture. They were also friendly, and flexible in accommodating our requests and also showed their professionalism by always being on time in the morning and during our time with them, they were always helpful, patient and understanding.

I would like to mention that 2 of our guides (Andy in Beijing and Peter in Guilin) were excellent. Their English was fluent. It was also obvious that both took great pride in their work.

Peter was very earnest, and very clear and systematic in his explanation of what we would see and do in the places we visited and he was also extremely helpful.

Andy was the best guide we have ever had. In addition to the qualities mentioned above, we found him very energetic, enthusiastic, lively and with an amazing sense of humour. He was very flexible and really went out of his way to accommodate our requests, for example, to visit a place which was not on our itinerary, but which both of us wanted to see - a Catholic Church associated with Matteo Ricci. He knew interesting little areas and eating places to which he took us for local food and snacks. He even got us some snacks when he thought we might need some sustenance. We had interesting conversations with him and it seemed more like we were spending time with a friend rather than with a guide we had just met.

Nina, our guide in Zhangjiajie, was very sweet. Her English was not as fluent, but she was very caring, helpful, very patient and kind especially when we had to negotiate all the steps up and downhill in the mountains. She was always very concerned about how we were faring, even in the type of food we enjoyed when we told her we just wanted to try the local food.

Transportation

The cars we travelled in were very nice, clean and comfortable. All the drivers, besides being very helpful, especially with our luggage, were also skilful drivers who conveyed us safely through, often, very heavy traffic.

The express speed train from Beijing to Xian was an enjoyable experience. The train was very comfortable, and the toilets were very clean.

But the 7-hour journey on the high speed train which stopped at all the stations between Guilin and Zhnagjiajie was less comfortable.

The train itself was fine although the journey was long.

For one thing, there was a man just behind me who talked very loudly for hours on his mobile phone. I could not change seats because the train was quite full.

Then, there were 2 people quarrelling at the entrance of our compartment when we were trying to board the train. They blocked the entrance and refused to move until someone in charge of the compartment screamed (right next to my ear) for the security guard. We had to literally bulldoze our way into the train which was about to leave.

The hotels, besides being grand, were clean, comfortable and had all the amenities we needed. The one in Guilin had a fantastic view.

In general the breakfasts provided by the hotels were also excellent.

We think China is a very beautiful country with so much history, culture and nature to enjoy. Being on a guided tour, we had less contact with the ordinary people than we would normally have when we do a free-and-easy trip. But, all in all, we had a great trip and we would like to visit China again.

So we are thinking of going to the following places sometime in October 2024, after the Chinese National Holiday in early October.

Hello Rita,

Some of the most incredible sights I have ever seen are on Day1 & Day2.

Nothing was too much trouble for Bree. She took us to quiet places when we needed a rest from the noise.

We only ever waited a few minutes for our driver. He was good.

So sorry for the long delay, I am still travelling and haven’t been on the laptop so much.

Very good tour, very happy with all arrangements. I am willing to recommend your service to my friends who also have an interest to visit China.

And the main ingredients are: soybean, taro powder, mushrooms, fresh vegetables and tofu (bean curd). It will be easier to find the vegetarian restaurants in big cities of china, such as: Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, HK, etc.

If allergic to some food

We suggest you to list any food or ingredients that you are allergic to and let our travel consultant know. Then your travel consultant will mark them in the guide’s itinerary, so that our guides in different cities can make some preparations and arrangements in advance.

Do our guide and driver join the meal with us?

The tour guides and driver will be at the same restaurants with you, but they will only join the meal when you invite. Sometimes the drivers are shy to join as they usually eat fast and could not understand English talk around the table, so the guide will be with you more often.

Will we be able to try some local foods during our visit?

Yes, you will. There will be some meals excluded in your itinerary as you like, and your private guide will be delighted to give you some suggestions and take you to the local restaurants, if you are interested in local food tasting. What to buy in China?

In China, there are myriads of souvenirs for visitors, and each city has its own specialty.

Some of the best buys are:

  • Beijing: Cloisonné; Fresh water pearls
  • Xi'an: Replicas of the Terra Cotta soldiers; Tangsancai (Tang Dynasty hand painted China); Antique Furniture
  • Shanghai: Silk carpets
  • Hangzhou: Longjing Tea; Silk

How to bargain?

Bargains are not acceptable in big supermarkets and department stores. But in some night markets or tourist shops, you can bargain for a lower price, since the vendors always ask for very high price for a certain item. You’d better ask the opinion of the guide first, and then the guide will tell you the real value and quality of the item. Please note that when the bargain is processing, the guide will be hesitate to help as it may annoy the bosses. Just try to let the guides know you will bargain in advance.

What to do with persistent vendors?

If you do not need something from them, just do not ask for price. Some of the venders are very persisted, and if they keep selling things to you, you can simply say “No, thanks.” (Chinese pronunciation: ”Bu, XieXie”). If they do not give up, you just keep silence. Silence is sometimes useful to handle this situation.

More Tips for free-time shopping

  • 1. If you think you have no desire or interest, you do not feel embarrassed to let our guide know DIRECTLY (since some of our guides are enthusiastic in taking you shopping)
