13 Amazing Zoo Visits: A Zoo Virtual Tour

zoo virtual tours

zoo virtual tours

Are you running out of interesting ideas to keep the little ones occupied? Are you tired of reading the same storybook, watching the same cartoons, or singing the same set of children’s songs for your kids? Why not let them visit the zoo while keeping them safe inside your homes? Yes, that is possible these days using virtual tours. Virtually visiting zoos is one of the best ways to keep them entertained and informed about animal habitats and behaviors.

zoo virtual tours

There are several zoos you can visit virtually with your kids. Once you are done with your zoo visit, you can do a virtual tour of some museums and theme parks as well. But, we will discuss more on that in our next blogs. For now, take note of these lists for your visual zoo visits.

zoo virtual tours

San Diego Zoo – Visit their website a get a chance to watch the live video stream of animals like the ape, baboon, burrowing owl, condor, elephant, giraffe, hippo, koala, panda, penguin, platypus, polar bear, and tiger.

  • Houston Zoo – This zoo is also equipped with a live cam where your kids could virtually spend time watching the giant river otter, the elephant, the giraffe, the gorilla, flamingo, chimp, and even as small as the leafcutter ants do their thing.
  • Atlanta Zoo – This zoo has a live stream video of their cute panda. Watch them as they munch through bamboo leaves.
  • Chester Zoo – This zoo makes use of its social media account, Facebook, and Youtube for a live feed of animals for an entire day. Your kids could virtually watch the butterflies flutter in-between flowers or the fishes swim across beautiful corals.
  • Cincinnati Zoo – The pandemic gave birth to Home Safari Facebook Live where animals become the star of the live video stream. Children would learn about how safari animals are being taken care of. They can watch vultures, sloths, meerkats, aardwolves, and many more.
  • Georgia Aquarium – If you or the little ones are more interested in sea creatures, then visit the live stream of Georgia Aquarium. You can virtually interact with the beluga whales, African penguins, sea otters, or watch the feeding frenzy of piranhas.
  • Monterey Bay Aquarium – This zoo has a live cam set on its aviary. This sure is a hit if you are into birdwatching. You can also switch to other views as Monterey Bay Aquarium also offers a live stream on their Moon Jelly, and Sharks. But perhaps for people who are into freediving and snorkeling, the open sea cam will get you more interested.
  • National Aquarium in Baltimore- Unlike the seven locations mentioned above offering live streams of animals, National Aquarium offers a panoramic view of the area. You can pan to the left or to the right to watch different animals. Make use of the View Map tab to switch to different floors and move from sea creatures to land animals. The Explore Scene allows you to choose between specific animals you would want to check out. If you are unfamiliar with navigating around a virtual tour website, just click the Instruction tab and it will show you the complete instructions on how to enjoy the virtual tour. Their website is powered by Samurai Virtual Tours which provides a four-level view of the entire place.
  • Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute in Washington – When you virtually visit this zoo you will get to enjoy giant pandas and learn about their behavior and eating habits. You can also virtually watch black-footed ferrets, elephants, lions, and the naked mole rats in their everyday living. There is a feature where you get to learn more about these animals when you download the Animal Cam Bingo Cards.

10. New England Aquarium – You can watch the penguin colony or the variation of marine creatures swim along with their huge ocean tank at the comfort of your home. The zoo also offers virtual programs such as virtual academy programs and virtual animal encounters. These are exciting ways for your kids to continue learning about animals. They would also have a chance to learn from aquarium educators.

11. London Zoo – Similar to National Aquarium, London Zoo offers more than a live cam for virtual tours, thanks to 360virtual tour provider. If you have not visited the United Kingdom and you are curious about what their zoo looks like, you can take a peek using their virtual tour. It will give an idea of how huge the place is. You can navigate around the areas and see where the animals are kept.

12. Australia Zoo – Visiting the zoo does not require you to fly out to the land down under. They are actively using their Youtube channel so animal lovers like yourselves could still enjoy a virtual interaction with zoo animals.

13. Oregon Zoo – This zoo is a non-profit organization that provides a live stream of its animals. Your kids could watch the goats run around, or red pandas enjoying some snacks.

zoo virtual tours

From the list mentioned above, the majority of the zoo can be visited virtually by the live cam on their websites or their social media channels. Only a handful of them have a 360 virtual tour feature and this is a great opportunity to make zoo visits more interactive, engaging, and educational. The combination of innovative solutions such as 360 technology and virtual reality can create a more immersive experience for your children who are always curious about learning new things. The restrictions of being confined inside our homes should not stop our children and us too from continuously learning about the world of animals. The only way that the next generation could better take care of these animals is to understand and to know more about them. So, take time to nurture their curiosity by virtually taking them to amazing zoo visits. Do not miss the 360 virtual tour for some cool navigation features.

At Momentum 360 , we pride ourselves in being a top choice for 360 virtual tours for zoos, museums and theme park areas. Feel free to reach out anytime for an opportunity to add some 3D virtual tours to these areas.

An intimate window into the lives of real animals, the camera gets you so close you feel like you’re there. Nothing comes close to zoolife!

It’s always changing. I’ve watched newborn animals grow up before my eyes ❤️

On YouTube lives, you had to be lucky to see the animal. On zoolife, the camera control and interactiveness are incredible!

For disabled people like me, a trip to the zoo and walking through is no longer a possibility. I love that I can visit the zoo from home.

This is amazing! What a great idea. Can get up and close to the lions while I'm in the safety of my house. Love it 😍

On zoolife I enjoy a healthier space while I draw, journal, stretch, or work. It feels like I’m hanging out with the animals.

8 Virtual Zoo and Aquarium Tours to Take Right Now

online zoo tour

by AnnaLiese Burich

April 3, 2020

If you're not lucky enough to have immediate access to cute and/or majestic animals—whether it's in the form of pets or scenic views outside your window—you could probably use a little dose of wildlife right now. Luckily, zoos and aquariums across the nation are now offering livestreams of their animals and tons of themed (and educational!) activities...and we're paw-sitively loving it. Here are our fave zoos to check out online—no travel required!

1.  Oakland Zoo

This one is what you might call a "state of the art" virtual zoo. Behind-the-Scenes Live is a brand-new subscription service that lets you into the inner sanctum of the Oakland Zoo five times a week. You'll get "up close and personal" with the animals, meet their animal keepers and vets who keep them healthy. The fun doesn't stop there—it's interactive, meaning that you get to ask questions and get answers in real-time!

When:  Monday-Friday, 5:30-6pm EST

2.  Cincinnati Zoo

Every day, you can tune into a Cincinnati Zoo "Home Safari" Facebook Live, where zookeepers will feature one of its animals (we particularly love Fiona , their premature hippo—the smallest hippo to ever survive!). Then they'll lead kids in an animal-themed activity you can do at home.

When:  Daily at 3pm EST

3.  Monterey Bay Aquarium

This preeminent aquarium runs 10 live cams —count 'em, 10!—for your viewing pleasure. There's a coral reef cam, an aviary cam, a jelly cam, a shark cam, a penguin cam, and more. Note: don't miss out on the Sea Otter Cam—they're the unofficial mascot of the Aquarium and oh-so-cute. Want a little more info to go with your sea life? The Aquarium also hosts periodic live chats with sea-life experts and veterinarians on Facebook Live .

When: Time varies by animal; check the website for more

4.  Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

If it's the Smithsonian, you know it has to be good. They, too, have a plethora of live cams on their animals—from naked mole rats to elephants to giant pandas. Bonus: they also offer a downloadable activity for kids (grades K-5) to do while watching the live cams! Who needs science class?

When: All the time

5.   San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo, often heralded as "the best zoo in the world," doesn't disappoint when it comes to virtual offerings. In addition to livestreams of apes, koalas, giraffes, polar bears, butterflies and more, they offer a whole website just for kids that's chock-full of activities, videos, games and information (we're big fans of Tiger Trail , ourselves).

6.  Houston Zoo

Houston Zoo isn't letting the small matter of zoo closure stop us from having fun. They have tons of webcams (our favorites are the Leafcutter Ants and the Flamingo cams!) and, like many of their peers, also host daily Facebook Lives and at-home learning activities  like creating-your-own-panda feet !

When: Daily live cams 8am-8pm EST; daily Facebook lives at noon EST

7.  Zoo Atlanta

Zoo Atlanta centers its online fun all around pandas—because why not? They offer a live PandaCam and regularly create YouTube " Keeper Stories, " an in-depth look at what it takes to care for the 1000+ animals at the zoo. They, too, offer tons of activities ( Backyard Bingo , anyone?)

8.  Georgia Aquarium

Is there anything more calming than watching animals swimming through water? That's why we love the Georgia Aquarium's live webcams of its notable sea creatures. The jellyfish are mesmerizing, the underwater puffin is fascinating and the beluga whale is awe-inspiring. Instant zen.

Bringing the Zoo to You

Coming to you live from the Bronx Zoo and New York Aquarium! Check out a few fan-favorite exhibits, including the Spiny Forest in Madagascar!, JungleWorld, the Sea Lion Pool, and Ocean Wonders: Sharks. The cams are live daily from 10am to 4pm EST.

Congo Gorilla Forest

Western lowland gorillas: camera 1.

Gorillas are among our closest relatives in the wild. Their unique personalities emerge through their interactions with each other - playful, cautious, nurturing, curious. It is our hope that in observing and learning about these giants of the forest, people will be inspired to protect them and their habitats.

Western Lowland Gorillas: Camera 2

Congo Gorilla Forest was built as a groundbreaking, participatory exhibit, connecting field work to the work happening at the Bronx Zoo. The exhibit is home to two troops of gorillas and spans 6.5 acres, incorporating nearly 400 species of live plants that range from 50 foot tall trees to delicate orchids.

Madagascar!

Spiny forest.

The Spiny Forest exhibit is home to ring-tailed and collared brown lemurs, as well as radiated tortoises and a variety of bird species including red fodys. The animals co-exist here just as they would in the wild.

JungleWorld

Silver leaf langurs.

Grooming each other atop a maze of branches in our Asian jungle, the silver leaf langurs display their close social bonds. The Bronx Zoo is home to the largest breeding population of silver leaf langurs in North America.

Sea Bird Aviary

Magellanic penguins.

The Russell B. Aitken Sea Bird Aviary is one of the Bronx Zoo’s hidden gems. It’s home to beautiful, mustachioed Inca terns as well as Magellanic penguins and Humboldt brown pelicans. Enjoy spending some time with the birds!

Astor Court

Sea lion pool.

Located right at the heart of the park, our sea lion pool harkens back in time to the zoo’s earliest days. There have been California sea lions at the Bronx Zoo since 1899, and these irrepressible aquatic mammals have always been a favorite around here.

Ocean Wonders: Sharks!

Canyon's edge.

You don’t have to hold your breath to enjoy this underwater view, though it may take your breath away! Stare into the deep as sand tiger sharks, sandbar sharks, and rough tail stingrays emerge from the shadows.

Great zoos serve several meaningful purposes: they work to conserve endangered species, they educate people about animals and the environment, and they provide opportunities for the whole family to spend a fun day together. A good zoo provides an adequate environment, a healthy diet, and enrichment activities for all of its animals. The Online Zoo is a strong supporter of good zoos and a opponent of bad zoos which do not provide these things.

The Online Zoo has over 20,000 photos of more than 3,000 species from zoos, aquariums, other facilities, and the wild all over North America and a few other places around the world. Unlike most animal photo sites, all of our photos are original; you will not find them anywhere else. If you are interested in using any of our photos, please see this page .

No website can come close to the experience of visiting a good zoo or aquarium, but zoos can only house a limited number of animals, and there are many species you will never see at your local zoo. Hopefully you will see something new during your visit today!

Use the search bar at the top or choose one of the options below to start your visit.

All non-member Zoo tickets must be pre-purchased online or at the onsite kiosks.

The living desert mourns the passing of dadisi.

It is with a heavy heart that The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens announces the passing of Dadisi, the beloved, 23-year-old giraffe. On June 3, Dadisi was compassionately euthanized, passing peacefully on a soft bed of sand while surrounded by her loving caretakers. During her last days, team members from different departments of the Zoo visited Dadisi to say goodbye.

Dadisi was born on February 8, 2001, at the Oakland Zoo, and was the first giraffe to arrive at The Living Desert in 2002, marking the beginning of an era in the Zoo’s history. Shortly after, two males, Hesabu and Pona, joined the herd. Since Dadisi’s arrival, the herd has grown to 12 giraffe, including the two most recent calf births, both her grandchildren. Dadisi also saw the savanna grow into a multi-species habitat with the addition of ostrich and greater kudu.

Dadisi’s curious and adventurous nature was apparent from the beginning, as was her genuine connection with both animals and people. Dadisi truly brought joy to all those around her. “I’m glad she was able to spend pretty much her whole life here, and she’s had an amazing life,” said Animal Care Curator Wendy Enright, part of the team who welcomed Dadisi the day she arrived at The Living Desert. “I feel like she’s always had this spunk and fieriness to her,” Wendy continues. “She’s the most petite giraffe I’ve ever seen, but she’s got a big personality.” Throughout Dadisi’s time at The Living Desert, her friendly demeanor and calm presence helped to welcome new giraffe to the herd. “She’s been the matriarch of the group for many years,” Wendy adds. Beyond The Living Desert, Dadisi leaves the legacy of 37 descendants – including grandchildren and great-grandchildren – throughout AZA-accredited institutions around the country, coast-to-coast from New York to Hawaii.

Despite her age, Dadisi experienced relatively few medical issues throughout her life until her recent foot injury. Last September, the Zoo’s veterinary team discovered a fracture of the third phalanx on the middle toe of her right foot. Although these types of fractures are not uncommon in giraffe, healing from such an injury is often challenging and prolonged. Since the injury, Dadisi was recovering and resting behind the scenes where she was treated with laser therapy — which provided infrared heat to increase blood flow, decrease inflammation, and promote healthy cell growth — as well as pain and anti-inflammatory medications. During her time off the Giraffe Savanna habitat, Dadisi was kept company by other giraffe in the herd, including special visits from her daughter, Vicky Lou, and her granddaughter, JoAnn, who was born in January. In late February, Dadisi was with one of her other daughters, Shellie, when she gave birth to her second calf, Daniel.

Similar to humans, giraffe can develop age-related ailments, and many require geriatric care. Over the course of her lifetime of normal, regular activity, Dadisi developed arthritis in multiple joints of both front feet. Although not uncommon in aging giraffe, arthritis, when complicated by a digit fracture, may progress more rapidly to severe discomfort. After consulting with specialists and thoroughly assessing her treatment options, age, wellbeing, and to avoid rapid progression to severe, painful deterioration, The Living Desert’s veterinary and animal care teams decided that the best and most compassionate decision was to humanely euthanize Dadisi.

While this is never an easy decision, the teams that closely interacted with Dadisi on a daily basis knew that her complex injuries and advanced age meant she would be unable to safely return to the savanna, and her wellbeing would continue to decline. At The Living Desert, we are dedicated to facilitating the best possible wellbeing for the animals in our care throughout the entirety of their life, which includes geriatric and end-of-life care. Allowing an animal to go peacefully with the utmost respect, before their wellbeing drastically decreases, is the last gift that we can give. “I would much rather say goodbye to Dadisi after one of her better days than say goodbye on one of her worst days,” said RoxAnna Breitigan, Chief Operating Officer. “We feel that’s one of the responsibilities we have to the animals in our care.” The Living Desert deeply thanks all of the animal care and veterinary team members for the outstanding care they have provided to Dadisi throughout her long life.

Dadisi’s calm yet adventurous presence will be greatly missed. She is survived on the Giraffe Savanna by daughters Shellie and Vicky Lou, son Twiga, and her three grandchildren, Cole, JoAnn, and Daniel. Dadisi is also survived by five herd mates on the savanna: herd bull Kellie, Tuli – now the eldest female on Giraffe Savanna, and young males Kopano, Kazi, and Harold.

Due to habitat loss and poaching, the giraffe population is drastically decreasing, yet many people are unaware, creating what is called a silent extinction. As an ambassador animal, Dadisi was instrumental in bringing awareness to her species through sharing her story for the past 23 years. The sincere connections Dadisi made with both guests and The Living Desert staff are undeniable. Dadisi also helped to contribute to the genetic sustainability and diversity of the vulnerable giraffe human care population.

Dadisi lives on at The Living Desert, and around the world, within the hearts of all who met her.
