Trail Rides Wales

Superb motorcycle trail and adventure riding

Scenic picture of trail bikes overlooking Mawddach Estuary

Come motorcycle trail riding in beautiful Mid Wales! Colin and Marianne's trail riding days are a real motorcycle adventure!

We ride grass, mud, rock and stones, with streams to ford and puddles to negotiate. Our trail riding days cover 80 to 100 miles, with our easier days using the less rough trails. . You can hire one of our Honda CRF250Ls or use your own trail or adventure bike. (To hire, you need a full motorcycle licence).

If you have never been trail riding before, our Hondas are ideal. We will give you hints and tips to get the best out of your trail riding day.

Our bikes are at home on tarmac as well as trail riding, and Marianne is happy to provide confidence boosting and skill improving rides using the lovely scenic minor roads in our area. We also do a few long distance place-to-place trail riding tours using easy green roads.

Dakar legend Mick Extance and his team brings you the ultimate off-road motorcycling experience for the best possible price. Ride an amazing variety of trails, as you wind your way through and around 1,500 acres of beautiful Welsh forest in the heart of the stunning Berwyn Mountains.

enduro

Whether you’re new to the world of off road, a seasoned veteran, or even if you’ve never ridden a bike before in your life, our team of passionate and experienced instructors are ready to give you a day to remember. Don’t be put off by stories of giant off road bikes, we have a number of smaller bikes, perfect for those with a shorter inside leg measurement.

No matter what level you ride at, there’s plenty to challenge you and make sure you go home with a satisfied smile on your face and if this is your first time, we’re pretty confident you won’t want it to be your last. As if that wasn’t enough, we firmly believe that learning to ride an off-road bike can improve your road riding enormously.

The morning session provides an opportunity to get to grips with the basics. There’s lots of coaching along the way with plenty of challenges designed to build your confidence.

Your instructors will keep a close eye on you, making sure you are progressing nicely and are comfortable on your bike as you learn the trails and find out what the bikes are really made of.

After lunch, it’s time to put your new-found skills to the test and enjoy more great riding across our incredible venue.

Pictures taken from the day will be available for free on Facebook!

Our Ultimate Off Road Day location is situated deep in one of the most picturesque parts of Wales, close to the Shropshire border just outside the village of Llangynog, Powys. This tried and tested 1500 acre site, in the Rhyd Y Felin Forest offers fantastic offroad riding conditions, none of which is on public roads, so a UK motorcycle license is NOT needed to enjoy this truly, off road experience.

Your head instructor, Mick Extance, has a wealth of experience tucked under his still youthful belt!! Competing successfully at British, European and World Enduro Championship levels.

Our instructors are first aid trained and our venue is fully insured.

Our aim is to make your day as much fun as possible without compromising on safety.

  • Meet at the New Inn at 9.00am then head off to the nearby Mick Extance Experience facilities.

  • Lunch is not included, but there is an opportunity to purchase sandwiches from the New Inn on arrival. You may wish to order a sandwich in advance, particularly if you have any specific dietary requirements.
  • All the necessary outer wear is provided, but it’s a good idea to bring under layers appropriate for the time of year and prevailing weather conditions likely on the day. A thick pair of socks is always a good idea, along with a dry pair to put on when the day is finished.

What about the weather?

  • The experience takes place in all weather conditions with the exception of heavy snow.
  • In the event of a heavy snow fall, the experience may be subject to cancellation at short notice, and an alternative date will be offered.

We ask that customers respect themselves, other participants and staff at the event. We reserve the right to withdraw customers from the event, who exhibit dangerous behaviour that risks the safety of other customers and staff.

Brecon Beacons road on a Motorcycle tour

Our Wales motorcycle tour is a chance to ride in some of the UK’s most beautiful, varied landscapes. Wales is also home to some of the best motorcycling roads in the UK.

Tour duration: 3 to 5 days (2 to 4 nights)

The ride-outs that we have planned for you take in sweeping curves and grand vistas. Ride through mountains and moorland, past lakes and rivers, down to the sea. The welsh countryside has an ancient history as well. You will see plenty of old villages and farms and historic castles along the way; all have their stories to tell.

Welsh mountain road . RoadTrip Motorcycle Tour

Your hotel choices are both picturesque and well appointed. One in a country town and the other is in secluded countryside. Both are recently refurbished and offer double and twin rooms with bathrooms en-suite. The Inn is in a nearby village and has similar styles of accommodation. Popular with locals, it offers hearty fare and a friendly fireside bar.

Deluxe Double Hotel Room - Roadtrip Motorcycle Tours. RoadTrip Motorcycles West country and Wales motorcycle tour

Ride-outs in Wales

Each of our suggested day ride outs will take you to explore another part of Wales.

You could head north all the way to the coast before returning via Snowdonia National Park. You can ride south to the Brecon Beacons and home via a loop through the beautiful Elan Valley. Or spend a day riding out to the rugged west coast and follow the coast road northward before heading back to base. Motorcycle touring in Wales offers outstanding scenery and roads, wherever you ride.

Whichever ride-outs you choose, all promise exciting days of riding on some of the best roads in Europe. As with all our tour planning, flexibility is key. So, if you feel like riding a shorter route or taking a day off to explore the local area on foot then by all means do so. Likewise, if there is a specific place you want to visit, just plot it into the GPS sat nav unit and off you go!

When it’s time to bid farewell to Wales, we have planned another excellent route to bring you back to RoadTrip. Or, take a different route to tour in the South West or northwards through the Peak District to Yorkshire.

Excellent day riding with Steve! Great set-up with the riders flat and hearty breakfast before setting off for a day of riding. Steve makes the day flow well with his local knowledge of plently of different types of trails to suit all abilities. I would definitely recommend Trail Riding UK - David

Spent a couple of days with Steve and it was a lovely experience, a bit for everyone and we were all well looked after.

Pleasure to meet you Steve, definitely come again. - Jason

Have been out with Steve (and Rob) on two occasions - once with a large group of experienced riders on our own bikes and once with a couple of newcomers on rental bikes. On both occasions, Steve did a fantastic job of tailoring the route to suit the riders, and was always on hand to give tips on riding techniques. A wealth of local trail knowledge for new or experienced riders alike, highly recommended. - Andrew

Fantastic Day

Dorian sanchaez.

What fantastic day with Stan and his team, Justin and Dave. I treated myself and my two sons aged 13 and 20, to a superbly organised day of tuition. The bikes were brilliant, new and in tiptop condition. Location is idyllic, ample designated areas for informative coaching. We felt incredibly safe and had great guidance throughout the day. Thank you so much for looking after us.

A world Class facility

Anthony penwirght.

Stan is an absolute pleasure to spend time with. I often make a 3 hour Journey as I cant find a better experience. He has set up a world class facility for the disciplines he teaches. I have been on 4 events with Stan each has been varied and different. He has taught me and my friends some fundamental skills that we wouldn’t of naturally found through our experience. Whether you are an expert or a experienced rider I truly believe Stan can help you. His prices are extremely good value for money and alongside the knowledge he has also adjusted my bike to feel much better than it was before, Top man, Top organisation cannot recommend enough.

Knowledgeable and Really Helpful

Rossi d'agostino.

Great place to ride. Stan’s a very knowledgeable fella and really helpful. Any rider will benefit from spending time riding up here. Will definitely be going back…

Ladies' Day

Francesca porter.

Stan and crew are an amazing group of people. LADIES DAY was awesome and I will be booking as often as I can get away with!

Fabulous Day

Keith maslin.

Two of us had a fabulous day yesterday with Stan on some interesting and challenging lanes around East Devon. Proper tricky in places and the first time I’ve been properly exhausted by the end of the day. We will be back for sure!

Excellent Training Area

We discovered Stan Watt and Rotor Adventures a few years ago and thoroughly recommend them for anyone thinking of trying out or developing skills for off-road riding. They have great equipment (supply everything needed); are based on an excellent training area and have lots of green-lane trail rides in the local area which include is a stunning part of England. The instruction is really good for novices and experts alike and programmes can be tailored so suit individuals or small groups. Thoroughly recommend them. Their website will tell you more.

Highly Recommend

Jon verrier.

Everyday is a great day with the Rotor team. Cannot recommend too highly. Training at Rogers or trail riding round Dorset, Devon, Wales, Spain & Portugal.

Highly Qualified Coaching

Roberto pellegrino.

Best day ever! Super high qualified coaching, can’t recommend this school enough! Brand new bikes, all gears and protection provided, loads of different tracks and great friendly atmosphere all around! I will definitely book another time!

Free Motorcycle Touring Routes Wales

  • March 26, 2021

Below is a selection of free motorcycling touring routes to download, ride and enjoy. If you have never ridden in Wales, then you are in for a treat.

Wales might be smaller than Scotland, but it packs so much into a smaller land mass.

Perhaps it is the absence of motorways – with the only exception being the section of M4 in the very south of Wales – that has helped to maintain so many exceptional routes for motorcycle tours.

You can pick just about anywhere in Wales or on the Welsh border and have a great time. Hotels, Farm Stays, Camp Sites, B&B or even formulaic Travelodge “hotels”.

Every type of overnight stay except wild (free) camping is catered for. In the majority of Wales, wild camping isn’t permitted, although the rules in the Snowdonia National Park and parts of the Brecon Beacons may differ. If wild camping is your thing, then more research is advised.

As Wales is covered in excellent motorcycling roads, we opted for Llanfyllin, which is 25 miles west of Shrewsbury and from there, you can reach most of Wales on a day-long loop.

The other reason for picking Llanfyllin is the Cain Valley Hotel – a superb, well-priced, motorcycle-friendly hotel with secure parking.

Download, ride and enjoy.

Dunlop Motorcycle Tyres - Proudly Supporting Motorcycle Touring

If you have a route that you would like to share, get in touch and with the Editor, and we will do our best to include it.  Download, ride and enjoy. What could possibly go wrong? All the motorcycle touring routes are GPX 1.1 version files.

All of the motorcycle touring routes are provided “as is” without guarantee, liability or any assurances.  The lawyers said we had to include that sentence. All we can tell you is that we had an excellent time planning and riding them.

Motorcycle Touring Routes Wales Route One

Motorcycle touring routes wales route two, motorcycle touring routes wales route three, motorcycle touring routes wales route four, motorcycle touring routes wales route five.

Route Five is a 164-mile loop based around the town of Llanwrtyd Wells, sixty-five miles further south from Llanfyllin.

Even in November and in the rain which is when we rode them, there is a lot of fun to be had.

Llanwrtyd Wells – perhaps the smallest town in Britain (population c.850) – is home to the quirky but welcoming Neuadd Arms Hotel.

The hotel was once the official party headquarters for the Monster Raving Looney Party (Screaming Lord Such), and makes a good base for a few days, opening up different route options.

Perhaps the most famous road in the area is the Devil’s Staircase on the Abergwesyn Road which runs all but past the front door of the hotel.

For a more detailed description, click on the article below.

Getting Wet In Wales

Motorcycle Touring Routes Wales The Mach Loop

Starting from our favourite hotel in Wales – the Cain Valley Hotel – this route takes you past the lakes at Bala (Lynn Tegid & Llyn Celyn) and then through the famous Mach Loop area where the Airforce carries out low flying.

Exiting the Mach Loop area to the north, the route stays on the back roads as you approach Betws-y-Coed, crossing the A470 at Llanrwst, continuing east and south to the Nant Y Garth and on to the Horseshoe pass.

Waypoint 42 – which is a Via Point – is 163 miles from the start and marks the famous Ponderosa Café before taking the relaxed route via the A5 and the A495 back to the Cain Valley Hotel.

The back roads on the route get a little narrow in places, but it is all tarmac and easy to ride on a motorcycle.

The scenery is stunning. The Airforce can make the Mach Loop section entertaining, but they only fly the Mach Loop in good weather and on weekdays.

Download, ride and enjoy. What could possibly go wrong?

Update: Having ridding the route again, we found a small improvement by extending to Llanfair Talhaearn. There is a cool cafe where the A548 meets the A544 too.

Llynne Brianne Reservoir & the Brecon Beacons

As planned, the route will take you to the  Welsh Rarebit Centre, the Dan-y-Ogof National Showcaves, along the famous Black Mountain Road and to the Owl’s Nest Biker Café.

From the Café you have two options.

Option 1: Follow the road for 11 miles until you arrive back at Riverbank Bed and Breakfast. The total journey time without stopping is 3 hours 21 minutes.

Option 2: Extend your journey to visit the scenic Llynne Brianne reservoir and return via the Devil’s Staircase.

pdf-300x

Devil's Bridge and the Elan Valley

As planned, the route will take you through Abergwesyn, Tregaron, and the hairpin bends of the Devil’s Staircase.

The Talbot Hotel in Tregaron is a good place for lunch, or perhaps a visit to the Welsh Gold and Craft Centre is of interest.

There is a cafe at the Devil’s Bridge (Pontarfynach in Welsh), and for a small fee, you can walk around the nearby waterfalls.

There is also a short detour on the route that will take you to Claerwen, the most impressive location for a view of the reservoir dams.

A more detailed route description is in the PDF file below or talk to Tony in the bar of the Riverbank B&B.

Riverbank BnB Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys, Wales

If you are so inclined, consider buying us a cup of coffee. We drink enough of the stuff while planning these routes.

It took me a moment, but I got there in the end. Thank you for the spot …. overlapping elements. All fixed. A page refresh might be required.

The link should take you to the Touring Routes for Wales. The Mid-Wales loop is route 5 at the bottom of the page. If you don’t see it, could you refresh the page, and let me know if it appears please?

Would it be possible to sort out the link for the Mid Wales route please? The text doesn’t point to a file at the moment.

Discover some great roads in Wales to ride a motorcycle on

Regular visitors to Wales, 'Toad' (Simon) Hancocks and Alex Strange  of VisorDown.com selected their pick of the best Welsh roads to ride a motorcycle on, along with some great places to stay and visit on the way.

When it comes to world class roads for motorcycle riding you are spoilt for choice in Wales. From scenic sea views and golden beaches in the north, to the rugged and raw coastline around the Southwest.

The VisorDown.com team have been lucky enough to sample the best roads in Wales quite a bit recently, with a number of launches and trips across the border from our base in Coventry, England. We’ve selected the best roads we’ve ridden, to help you pick out some gems to enjoy, and great places to stay and visit on the way.

The north coast and Eryri (Snowdonia)

If you are looking for some contrasting scenery, heading along the north coast of Wales and then looping down into Eryri (Snowdonia) is a pretty and varied ride. The A548 hugs the north coast, and runs through the seaside favourites of Prestatyn, Rhyl , and Colwyn Bay . Just before you reach the bridge over the River Conwy, hop onto the A470 and watch how the scenery changes in the blink of an eye.

As you leave the golden beaches and sand dunes behind, the forest takes over and you’ll hug the river down to Tal-y-cafn. Here you can cross the River Conwy and pick up any number of the roads that head west and into the stunning Eryri National Park . This is quite possibly the best bit of Wales, whether you are on a naked, sports bike, or adventure motorcycle. The views are stunning and you have a seemingly endless number of roads, tracks and trails to explore.

Conwy Castle, North Wales

Places to stay and visit in the area

For our recent Energica Experia tour of the region, we based ourselves at the Hilton Garden Inn Snowdonia and made full use of the free EV charge points provided by the hotel.

The A5 all the way to Anglesey

The island of Anglesey is a lovely destination to ride to, and the fact that the A5 runs basically from London all the way to Holyhead at the tip of the island makes it very simple to get to. The A5 might be fairly boring as it slices through the centre of England, but once you get into Wales it changes dramatically. The further north and west you the better it gets, peaking on the section that leads from Capel Curig and all the way to Bangor. The section that runs alongside the Llyn Ogwen is particularly beautiful, and with lots of places to park up and enjoy the views, it’s well worth adding to your list.

Heading across to Anglesey also grants you the chance to head over the Menai Suspension Bridge . Once you are on the island of Anglesey, you can either take the A55 all the way to Holyhead or take the original A5 which is more scenic and enjoyable to ride.

Menai Suspension Bridge, North Wales

Places to visit in the area

Ynys Lawd South Stack is a great stop-off point and you can check out the famous lighthouse that warns approaching ships and guides them to safety. Here you can walk right down to the lighthouse, or simply enjoy the views from one of the many benches and viewing points in the area. A little way from the lighthouse is the RSPB South Stack Cliffs Reserve . The cafe is a great place to grab a coffee and some cake, and best of all parking for motorcycles is free.

Another place you should try and visit is Trac Mon, also known as Anglesey Circuit . This place is called the Welsh Philip Island and when you see it, you can understand why. The fast, sweeping circuit is framed by the stunning coastline, and if you get decent weather, it’s a fabulous track to ride. Should you be lucky enough to visit on a day that an event is taking place you’re in for a treat – just pray the weather stays dry!

Alex Strange and 'Toad' (Simon) Hancocks of VisorDown.com by South Stack Lighthouse, Anglesey, North Wales

West coast, Pendine Sands to Bosherston Lily Ponds

If you’re a petrolhead, Pendine Sands is well worth a visit. Pendine Beach is the scene of many a historical record attempt and more recent two-wheeled endeavours too. It’s one of the few beaches in the UK where bikes and cars are allowed to drive on in some places, and groups like the Vintage Hot Rod Association still host two and four-wheeled events here.

A nice route from Pendine for those that want to explore is to follow the road to Saundersfoot and then on to Tenby. Tenby is a great town , with a bustling high street full of pubs, cafes, shops and restaurants. Once refuelled, follow the A4139 and pick up the B4585 to Manorbier. Here you can stop at Manorbier Castle and pop in the grounds for a walk about or a coffee. Most of the ruins of the castle are open to the public and you can climb the towers for great views of the coastline.

A short ride from Manorbier is the very pretty Bosherston Lily Ponds , a stunning collection of lakes that, you guessed, are absolutely covered in lily pads. The lakes are crisscrossed by a series of raised walkways and bridges making it easy to explore the entire area. A short walk from here is Broadhaven South Beach , quite possibly one of the prettiest beaches in the whole of the UK.

Pendine Sands, Carmarthenshire, Manorbier beach and Bosherston Lily Ponds, Pembrokeshire, West Wales

Lake Vyrnwy to Portmeirion

I’ve stayed at the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel twice in the last couple of years, once on the press test of the KTM 890 Adventure and again on the UK launch of the Harley-Davidson Pan America. It’s a beautiful place, with the dam at the eastern end of the lake providing the perfect backdrop for a picture of your bike – especially if it is in full flood! A nice route from here to the coast is to take the back roads to Portmeirion. Begin by hugging the north shore on the B4393 and pick up the signpost to Bala at the western end of the lake. This road will take you past the lakes of Llyn Tegid and Afon Tryweryn, and as you pick up the A4212 the road and views just get better and better.

The final destination on this ride is the pretty village of Portmeirion , a quaint little spot built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975. His vision was to create a village that had the look of an Italian town, a trick he pulled off pretty well. Here there are a number of cafes and eateries, allowing you to rest and recharge before heading off to your next stop.

Lake Vyrnwy and and Portmeirion Village, North Wales

If after all this riding you still haven’t got your motorcycle fix, you could head over to the Mick Extance Kawasaki Experience , where you can try your hand on any number of machines, from Enduro bikes all the way up to the Harley-Davidson Pan America. It’s a short ride from Lake Vyrnwy and caters for absolute beginners right the way up to experienced rally racing pros. Mick's facility has miles and miles of tracks and trails meaning you can ride from dawn till dusk, without ever touching a piece of Tarmac.

March to October

Leaving behind Bristol, with its wealth of maritime history, you'll cross the 5km long Prince of Wales Bridge and enter Monmouthshire before skirting Cardiff to visit Caerphilly Castle, the second largest castle in the UK, surrounded by its complex system of concentric moats and lakes.

Next you will head north through the picturesque Brecon Beacons, famous as the home of UK special forces training, before arcing to the west to visit Pembroke and Cardigan castles, both superb examples of mediaeval defensive architecture. Beautiful Cardigan Bay, with its immaculate stretches of sand makes a perfect stop for the evening.

Cardigan Bay

From Ceredigion, you'll trace the coastline, with the Irish Sea on your left all the way up to rugged Snowdonia where Edmund Hillary and the rest of Sir John Hunt's team spent the winter of 1952/53 training for their successful attempt on Everest. As you head through the National Park, you'll be able to visit Harlech, Caernarfon and Conwy castles, all designed by James of Saint George for Edward I and begun in 1283  With two nights in your hotel in Conwy, you have the opportunity to ditch the panniers and ride a fabulous route around northern Snowdonia and the unspoilt Llyn Peninsula. You'll cross the iconic Menai Bridge to Anglesey for a visit to Beaumaris Castle, looking back across the straits at the mainland. Don't forget to stop off at Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, Europe's longest place name and a perfect photo and souvenir opportunity.

Flawless Cardigan Bay

As you leave Conwy, pay a visit to the smallest house in Great Britain. At less than five and a half square meters, this tiny abode nestled in the city walls has made it into the Guiness Book of Records for its diminutive size! From Conwy, you head south again, riding the famous Horseshoe Pass and leaving Snowdonia to follow the border and cut through central Wales to the Brecon Beacons once more. You'll visit Monmouth Castle, the final fortress of the trip, damaged beyond repair by Oliver Cromwell in 1647 to prevent it ever being used against the Parliamentarians. From here it's a pleasant ride along the Wye Valley and back across the Severn into England to complete your loop.

Mountains, bridges and displays of mediaeval might. Compact and attraction-packed Wales is motorcycle tourist's dream

You'll visit nine of the finest examples; Caerphilly, Pembroke, Harlech, Cardigan, Caernarfon, Conway, Beaumaris, Criccieth and Monmouth. Immerse yourself in the ingenious design and brutal history of each impenetrable colossus.

Wye Valley: Straddling the border of England and Wales, the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a landscape of woodlands and limestone gorges that follows the river Wye on its meander from the Welsh hills to the Severn Estuary

Alpine Snowdonia: Dramatic and rugged Snowdonia is home to all of Wales' 3000ft mountains, making it a popular destination for climbing and walking alike. It also boasts the wettest spot in the UK, so make sure your waterproofs are to hand! This is also where you will experience some of the best riding to be found in the British Isles.

Llyn Peninsula: Packed with conservation areas and sites of special scientific interest, the Llyn Peninsula extends 30 miles into the Irish Sea, and it's this relative isolation that has helped to make the area a bastion of Welsh language and culture.

Anglesey: Home to druids in pre-Roman times and the site of many Neolithic and  Bronze Age monuments, this ancient island is reached by riding across the Menai Straits on the photogenic suspension bridge built by Thomas Telford in 1826

Common questions about this trip

Where does this tour start from?

We start this itinerary from the Prince of Wales Bridge on the Welsh border for ease of access from across the UK but you can join this route at any point to form a loop from your house. Just let us know when you book which night’s stop would suit you best acting as night one of the trip.

When is the best time of year to do this trip?

May to September as a rule is the safest time to tour anywhere in the UK and Ireland although March, April and October can work with a dash of luck. It can be wet at any time of year but a sensible mix of vented kit and waterproofs with some base layers should cover all eventualities. Full kit and packing lists are supplied and we are happy to offer advice on packing for any of the trips.

Five great motorbike road trips in wales.

Five great motorbike road trips in Wales - Roadskin®

Why go motorbike touring in Wales?

Wales is such a rewarding destination for biking. It’s got all the scenery – mountains, rivers and coastline – with charming places to stop over, masses of activities and boundless sights to see without even having to get off your bike. Spectacular scenery and quiet roads – with no passport required - is a pretty attractive combination right now. And the weather is getting better every day. So, we’re packing our bags, our cameras and our trusty Roadskin jeans, ready to revisit some of our favourite rides in Wales. We can’t wait to get back out there. Just keep an eye on your speed, as the Welsh police are really hot on speeding and there are plenty of cameras on those glorious stretches of road.

Looking for some of the best motorbike routes in Wales? Here are the Roadskin recommendations

1. anglesey.

Motorbike Road Trip to Anglesey

An island just off the northwest coast, Anglesey is 260 square miles of wild beauty. To get there, you’ll cross Thomas Telford’s Grade I listed bridge of 1827, the world’s first major suspension bridge – 305m long and 30m above the Menai Straits. The coastal loop is a shortish 75 miles on the main roads, and manageable in under an hour and a half, but you won’t be able to resist stopping off at the sandy, blue-flag beaches along the way. Roads can be long, winding and challenging, but there are also tranquil country lanes. The historical small town of Beaumaris makes a picturesque base. Mix up your trip with a motorcycle trackday at the Anglesey Circuit at Ty Croes.

Watch out for: puffins, dolphins and seals.

2. Brecon Beacons

Motorbike Tour of the Brecon Beacons

From sleek roads to twisty bends, the Brecon Beacons in south Wales offer all kinds of riding routes as well as epic views and super-starry night skies. The A470 slices through the centre of the Beacons and the stately mountain ranges of Pen y Fan and Fan Fawr. Heading south, pass the trailhead to Pen y Fan and Corn Du, check out Beacons Reservoir, then turn right onto the A4059, a fantastic, fast, moorland road with great visibility and curves. Alternatively, the A40 stretches along the north part of the Beacons, giving stunning views of the never-ending hills, lakes and the River Usk. The quaint market town of Brecon is a good place to stay and to eat.

Watch out for: wild ponies, stray sheep and the Gospel Pass, Wales’s highest driving road.

3. Llanwrtyd Wells – Tregaron (The Abergwesyn Pass)

Lapwing in Wales

Make for the wilds of the Cambrian mountains in mid-Wales for this bleakly beautiful ride. It’s only 20 miles-ish, but it’s one to savour: the moorlands and peat bogs of Abergwesyn Common, pine forests and streams. A highlight of this single-track route comes halfway through - a steep series of hairpins called the Devil’s Staircase. Needless to say, there’s fantastic walking if you want to make a day of it – have a picnic at the river by Nant Ifon. Watch out for: standing stones, lapwings and Soar y Mynydd, the most remote chapel in Wales.

4. Snowdon loop, Snowdonia National Park

Snowdonia Motorbike Road Tour

Easy. Base yourself in historic Caernarfon and ride around the highest mountain in Wales. For the best views of Snowdon itself, go anti-clockwise. Take the A4085, which speedily ascends into the foothills and includes a run along the pretty shores of Llyn Cwellyn. As you pass Rhyd-Ddu, look left up Snowdon’s gentle western slopes. Turn left at Beddgelert (Snowdonia’s most picturesque village – and perfectly located – another good place to stay) along the A498. Snowdon now shows its more dramatic and jagged side. Turn left at Pen y Gwryd and up through the Llanberis Pass. Its high point, Pen-y-Pass, is where the most popular walking routes to the summit begin. And, once you’re here - can you even get this close to the top without walking to it?! Some of the most expansive views in the British Isles will be your reward. To return, it’s downhill to Llanberis and back to Caernarfon.

Watch out for: the steam locos and narrow-gauge carriages of The Welsh Highland Railway.

5. Coastal Way

Pembrokeshire Road Tour by Motorcycle

Wales has a maritime climate (cloudy, wet, windy, mild) but there are huge variations, with harsher weather in the uplands and gentler conditions along the coast. Pack wet-weather gear and breathable base layers, plus versatile clothing that’s comfortable, stylish and practical enough to take you from the bike to the pub. Our AAA-rated Taranis motorcycle jeans (soft, stretchy, AAA-rated, good in all weathers except extreme cold) and Easyrider motorcycle jeans (lightweight, straight-leg, AA-rated, ideal for warmer days) are perfect for spring/summer UK touring on your motorbike.

Crazy photos show ‘catastrophic collapse’ of major road near yellowstone.

A massive chunk of a major road into Jackson, Wyoming — the gateway to Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons — crumbled away in a landslide just as the busy summer tourist season is kicking off.

Dramatic photos captured the gradual collapse of the Teton Pass road, which went from having a few small cracks to losing a large chunk of the pavement completely in a matter of days.

It began on Thursday when Wyoming Route 22 briefly closed as crews worked to repair a crack and drop to the road that had contributed to the crash of a motorcycle.

landslide

Geologists and engineers sent to examine the road noticed “that crack and that drop started to move a lot,” according to Stephanie Harsha, a spokesperson for District 3 of the Wyoming Department of Transportation.

A paving crew temporarily patched the road and it reopened later that night.

However, the road’s troubles only worsened Friday morning when it was shut once again due to a dramatic mudslide, the  Wyoming Department of Transportation wrote on social media .

Crews then noticed that the roadway’s damage had become more pronounced. Photos shared by the Department of Transportation show major cracks, but mere hours later the road had “catastrophically failed.”

 Teton Pass road

“We were very, very lucky that no crews were harmed. No equipment was damaged,” Harsha said. “So now, engineers and geologists are doing geological assessments on the pass. They’ve been looking at it all day.”

It was not immediately clear how long it would take to reopen the highway, which is a vital road for people who live across the border in Idaho and work in Jackson, a popular tourist attraction that serves at the gateway for many visitors to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park.

Wyoming Department of Transportation Director Darin Westby addressed these concerns in a statement and said that the catastrophic failure could not have been avoided.

road

”We understand this highway is a lifeline for commuters, deliveries, medical care access and tourism, especially with limited alternatives and the summer season upon us. WYDOT engineers, surveyors and geologists mobilized quickly to try to maintain highway viability as long as possible, but catastrophic failure could not be avoided,” Westby said.

“WYDOT remains on site decisively engaged on fixing the road and restoring connectivity to the Teton Valley. Safety is our utmost priority, and we ask that recreationists and curious residents avoid the area until it can be stabilized.”

An alternative route between Jackson and the area of Victor, Idaho, goes more than 60 miles out of the way and adds “quite a bit to any commute,” Harsha said.

Gov. Mark Gordon signed an executive order declaring an emergency, which his office says will help the state access additional resources from the Federal Highway Administration to begin necessary repair work.
