Norwegian Escape Review: My Favorite Things About This Cruise

J. Souza

What a fantastic cruise!  I just got home from a 7-day cruise to Bermuda on Norwegian Escape.  There are still thoughts of crepes, NY strip steaks, and wings from O’Sheehan’s dancing in my head as I unpack.

The cruise itinerary started in New York City out of the Manhattan cruise terminal , and it took us to beautiful Bermuda for 3 days in port.

Even with somewhat rough weather to and from Bermuda the stabilizers on Norwegian Escape kept the cruise ship mostly steady during the voyage, which allowed more time for exploring and enjoying every aspect of this Norwegian Cruise Line vessel.

In this post I will highlight some of my favorite aspects of the ship and what I personally thought about this cruise overall.  I hope it’s a help to anyone looking to sail on Norwegian Escape in the future.

First, Some Facts About Norwegian Escape

norwegian escape pool deck

Norwegian Escape debuted in August of 2015.  I was actually at the inaugural event and was able to get some video of the ship then.

Escape is a 165,300 ton Breakaway Plus-class ship.   It is 1,069 feet in length, has a max beam of 153 feet, and has a max capacity of 4,428 passengers.  The beautiful painting on the ship’s hull was done by renowned artist Guy Harvey.

The Sailaway

sailaway out of manhattan new york

This sailaway was epic.  After spending the day before in New York City, seeing the city from the Hudson as we floated on by on Norwegian Escape was a treat in itself.

As part of the sailaway celebration Norwegian played “God Bless the USA” and then “New York, New York” by Frank Sinatra.  Seeing the Manhattan skyline, Freedom Tower, and the Statue of Liberty as we sailed out to sea was the perfect way to start this voyage.

Just about everyone was out on deck to see these amazing sites.  There are plenty of places on Escape to enjoy Sailaway including the Sun Deck on deck 20.

Thermal Suite at Mandara Spa

mandara spa norwegian escape

Getting thermal suite access on Escape was a must.  I checked it out at the inaugural, but I needed to experience it for myself.  Since my wife and I didn’t have a spa balcony that included access we opted to purchase access to the thermal suite for $200 for the week.  This ended up being cheaper than the $250 if you waited to buy access once on the ship.

This place did NOT disappoint.  We must have visited the thermal suite 2-3 times a day, every day.  The large thalassotherapy pool was just the perfect place to relax.  With jets all around the pool that targeted the lower back, a splash fountain that could hit the shoulders, and plenty of room to lounge as the bubbles enveloped you, this was the place to get away from it all.

thalassotherapy pool in thermal suite

The spa also consists of a salt room, dry sauna, sanarium (basically a dry sauna with some pleasant aromas and a lower temperature), a steam room, and a snow room.   Unfortunately, the snow room was not operational during our cruise so I can’t give you my experience with it.  Apparently, a part broke on the refrigeration system and they had to order another one.  So, I guess I will just have to go back again sometime and try it.

A great way to relax before leaving the spa was to recline in one of the 20 or so warm tile loungers that looked out over the bow of the ship.  These loungers were perfectly heated and offered an ergonomic shape to mold the human body.  Besides these there were many other padded loungers throughout the suite as well.

This thermal suite is very spacious.  One of the biggest I’ve seen at sea.  I suppose it is needed with a ship this size.  Although, the number of passengers allowed access to this area is limited to keep it from getting overcrowded.

There were a couple sea days when it was a little busy from about 11am to 3pm.  I found the quietest times to be from 6pm to 8pm.

Dining Options Aplenty

main dining room savor taste

We were spoiled with options when it came to dining on Norwegian Escape.  Specialty dining options included Bayamo (seafood), Cagney’s Steak House, Food Republic (a la carte dining), La Cucina (Italian dining), Le Bistro (French cuisine), Moderno (Brazilian steakhouse), Pincho (Tapas Bar), Teppanyaki (Japanese cuisine), and Margaritaville.

Quick tip: Margaritaville does offer a complimentary breakfast, and it’s way quieter and less crowded than the buffet which is a deck below.   The omelet station guy is awesome by the way!

margaritaville on norwegian escape

The complimentary dining options included the Garden CafĂ© Buffet, Margaritaville for breakfast, O’Sheehan’s (open 24/7), and 3 main dining rooms.

There is a large main dining room called Manhattan Room and two smaller dining rooms called Savor and Taste.  Because of the more intimate settings we opted to eat at Savor or Taste about every night.  The service was fantastic, and the NY strip steak was sublime.  Most of our breakfasts were in Savor or Taste as well, and we were always accommodated with a table for two.

Norwegian’s freestyle dining offers so much flexibility and it’s the perfect way to stay full while cruising.

There is a crepe station in the Garden CafĂ© if you go during the right time.  I didn’t see this listed in the Freestyle Daily like it was when we sailed on Norwegian Epic, but if you go during dinner time or later I found the crepe station was usually open.  I’m missing those crepes just writing about them now.  Ask the Nutella in your crepe and thank me later.

O’Sheehan’s was one of our favorite places to eat as well.  Not only do they have great wings, soup, shepherd’s pie, and burgers, but they are open 24/7 and have special items throughout the week like prime rib, spareribs, and a soup of the day.

Some of the seats at O’Sheehan’s look down into the atrium so you can watch a gameshow or event while enjoying some lunch.

We did eat at Le Bistro one night, and it was a lovely experience.  The restaurant is located in a busy part of the ship with a lot of foot traffic going by, but inside the French dining venue there is a nice intimate setting to enjoy.

If we had one of the dining packages we would have eaten at more specialty dining restaurants, but we decided to save some money and enjoy most of the free offerings on Norwegian Escape.  That being said, if you plan on eating at more than one specialty dining venue be sure you purchase a dining package and book reservations well before your cruise to ensure convenient time slots.

Activities on Escape

things to do on norwegian escape

Just a brief tour of the upper decks on Escape made clear that we were not going to be bored on this ship.

There is a gigantic rope’s course (largest at sea with over 40 elements) that towers above the ship, a mini golf course, bocce lawn, large sports court, and a water park that will literally take your breath away.

There is a water park for the younger cruisers and the multi-story Free Fall waterslide for the thrill seekers onboard.  Free Fall is an intense ride with 4G forces pushing cruisers around the loop to splash out on deck 17.

And don’t forget Spice H2O for another place to cool off.  This space is just for adults during the daytime, and it offers a relaxing grotto water feature that you can walk through as you listen to the water trickle down the rocks.

We visited Spice H2O for a late night movie on the big screen as well.  This area is open to children for the evening hours.

There are two locations for arcade lovers on this ship.  One is located right near Spice H2O on deck 17, and the other is right next to and part of O’Sheehan’s near the atrium.

This is also where we found the bowling alley and played a few rounds by simply swiping a cruise card.  I can’t remember the cost, but I think it was something like $2 per game.  The pins and bowling balls are smaller than normal, but it was still a lot of fun.  Very inventive that each pin has a tiny rope attached to the top of it so the process of setting up pins can be automated more simply.

Entertainment

supper club

Alvin, the Cruise Director on Escape, is great at his job, and his energetic vibe kept everything light and easy-going.  So hats off to him for keeping us laughing, although I think he made himself laugh just as much.

The Freestyle Daily was always full of all kinds of games and events to keep the audience both engaged and involved.  What’s a cruise without the not-so newly wed game show right?

We also took part in some of the cooking demonstrations where the chefs showed us how to make a certain dessert or dish and had audience members help out in the process.

You definitely don’t want to miss the Escape Crew Talent show if you’re on this ship.  Not only do you get to see some of the crew sing, dance, and perform, but you have the opportunity to hear from the captain and see many of the crew on the stage to show them your appreciation.

From Broadway style shows, magic shows, comedy shows, dueling pianos, and everything in between Escape gives cruisers an assortment of options when it comes to entertainment.

The theater does not have a balcony and only has 2 aisles, so getting to a seat and then getting back out can be a bit of a challenge.  For most of the shows in the theater you are able to get reservations ahead of time to ensure an early entrance.  But even if you don’t have a reservation you can try to get a seat a few minutes before the show starts.

There was a 3D movie being played in the theater on at least one night of the cruise.

Our Stateroom

stateroom cabin

I usually like to book a stateroom that is relatively close to the stairwell, but this time we opted for the cruise line to pick the cabin and it was quite a ways forward.  There are only two elevator shafts on Escape and our walk from the cabin each time was a hike.

We were located on deck 12 and the cabin itself was quite comfortable.   I really like how you just push a button to let the attendant know if you need your room made up or if you would like to not be disturbed.  This is way better than hanging a piece of cardboard on your door handle.  And if your cruise card is in the slot in the room it shows that you are “At Home” which is rather convenient.

Deck 12 was a good neutral deck for us.  Just 4 decks up to the pool deck.  And visiting the hub of the atrium was down 4 decks.  So we were right in the middle, and it worked out well since I insisted we take the stairs 90% of the time.  Also, being at the front of the ship made those regular visits to the spa on deck 16 much easier too.

On either side of the bed were USB outlets for easy charging (keep in mind that when you take your card out of the slot and leave the room the outlets and lights turn off automatically).

The shower door was solid clear plastic which I prefer to the flimsy curtains.   And there was ample space in the bathroom, for a cruise ship, that is.

Tons of hangers in the closet made it easy to get everything hung up and there were many shelves and cabinets we never even used on this 7 day cruise.

If you have any questions about our cabin or cruise you can feel free to leave a comment below by the way.  It’s hard to mention every little detail so I might have skipped one that you thought was important.

bermuda cruise

Five words can sum up how I feel about this cruise to Bermuda: I want to go back.   I will do another article in the near future about Bermuda and some tips on cruising to this wonderful port.

Norwegian Cruise Line actually had a ferry right in port at the Royal Naval Dockyard that offered free transportation to St George’s and back.  We took the paid local ferry to some of the other ports around Bermuda, but the Norwegian ferry was like a Cadillac compared to the others.

I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the history of Bermuda and visiting some of the majestic beaches around the island.  The local vibe was very friendly and laid back, and not once did it feel pushy, even in what would be considered a touristy area.

It’s also convenient that the US dollar is accepted all over Bermuda and its value is kept the same as local currency.

We were in port for 3 days, so there was never a rush to get back to the ship as is usually the case on a cruise.  This also allowed us to take our time with a more leisurely schedule as we visited the Crystal Caves, Horseshoe Bay, Hamilton, St George’s, Elbow Beach, Warwick Long Bay, and a few other places.

Shout Out to the Crew of Norwegian Escape

norwegian escape crew

The crew can make or break a cruise vacation , no matter how great the ship may be.  The crew on Escape were attentive, caring, and genuine, helping make this such a relaxation cruise.

I should point out that my wife decided to take part in the “Search 4 Nations Scavenger Hunt”.  This is basically a week long contest in which you need to find crew members from the nations listed on the sheet of paper and get them to sign it.

As it turns out, this was actually a great way to get to know many of the crew onboard on a more personal level, even though some were reluctant to sign.  I know I would not want to be bombarded with autograph requests when I’m trying to get my job done.

But so many of the crew were cordial and hilarious in their responses, and they went out of their way to help.  I lost count of how many of those cards we filled out to commend a crew member for their wonderful service.

norwegian escape in port at Bermuda

I can see why Norwegian Escape is such a popular cruise ship, and I would love to sail on her again.  The incredible spa was one of the highlights of the ship and Norwegian’s excellent, relaxed dining made every dining experience something to look forward to.   The ship provides a good mix of places to relax and things to do, so families should find it a good fit for their vacations.

If you have any questions or comments about this ship please don’t hesitate to ask in the comments below.  Thank you for your time in reading my humble little opinion.

In 2020, NCL recategorized fleetwide the Mini-Suite cabin category, renaming it to "Club Balcony Suite" and adding free perks. The change didn't affect the staterooms' deck locations or cabin numbers.

NCL's Club Balcony Suite's new (bonus) amenities include pre-booking onboard dining and entertainment 125 days prior departure, room service (food-beverage delivery twice per cruise), free laundry service (1x bag) and pressing service (once per cruise), Welcome Aboard gift (1x bottle of sparkling wine).

On Norwegian Escape, the Club Balcony Suite category was introduced on October 11.

NCL's Studio cabins are designed for solo travelers. No single supplement is required for category T1.

Studio passengers enjoy exclusive access to the Studio Lounge (indoor relaxation and dining venue).

  • The Haven Spa suites’ location is close to the Thermal Suite (complimentary) and the Fitness Center.
  • An expanded Studio area (complex of single-occupancy cabins for solo travelers, keycard access only) – 82 in total, compared to the 59 on the Breakaway-class ships. The Studio area has its own exclusive lounge.
  • The list of family cruise accommodations includes 40 mini-suites (near Splash Academy location), 172 family balcony rooms (near kids’ facilities), 48 Oceanviews and some Inside family cabins (with an additional Pullman bed).

Passengers exempted from the new (uncommon for the industry) room service fee are only the occupants of “The Haven” suites. Still, as an exception, all passengers can order (for free) their room-service morning coffee and Continental Breakfast. After implementing the new service charge, NCL upgraded the room service menu, adding more hot food items for Breakfast and a wider food & drinks selection (available for ordering 24 hours a day).

Amazing European Adventure

May 30th, 2024

Despite the rude and unpleasant experience at the customer care desk, the cruise was fantastic overall. The smooth embarkation, excellent dining options, fun activities like pool, bowling, and arcades, along with outstanding entertainment, especially the Latin band, made the trip memorable. The waiters and room stewards provided exceptional service, enhancing the overall enjoyment.

Excellent Ports...

Although the ports of call and some areas of the ship were great, I must say that it was a little disappointing. The Passengers were also very different from all the other cruises we have been on, we have never experienced this level of manners - meaning they didn't have any most times, they couldn't follow instructions, were rude, etc... I could go on and on but I'll stop now LMAO

Good Cruise but could have been better in some areas

A taste of Europe

The cruise served a purpose but I will find another option next time. Too many people, not enough time in ports and the excursion staff needs some serious coaching.

Awesome Transatlantic/Repositioning Cruise

May 18th, 2024

NCL Escape is a beautiful ship with many amenities. Overall, we enjoyed every aspect of our voyage (itinerary, service, food, cleanliness, ship layout, and entertainment). We were blessed to experience such an awesome adventure on this bucket-list cruise!

Moment woman gets stuck mid-waterslide on cruise is triggering people's claustrophobia

Moment woman gets stuck mid-waterslide on cruise is triggering people's claustrophobia

People were horrified by the 'nightmare' slide on a norwegian cruise lines ship.

Joe Harker

Do you ever miss the days that your every moment wasn't captured by some camera and then plastered across the internet for everyone to see?

Nah, me neither, it's more fun this way.

Once upon a time a video of a woman appearing to get stuck in a slide would be caught on the family camcorder that your dad wouldn't have let anyone else use and be played maybe once or twice for the amusement of friends and relatives.

These days it can wind up online and be enjoyed by millions around the world, and now you know all about it too.

Back in 2022, TikToker Paige Hodgson posted a video of her mum zooming around a waterslide on a Norwegian Cruise Lines ship named Bliss, which was off the coast of Mexico at the time.

She was doing fine, right up until the point where her momentum gave out and gravity kicked back in.

"I'MMMM DEFYING GRAAAVITYYYY!" (TikTok/@paigejhodgson)

Her mum was dragged back down to a lower part of the slide which was dangling over the side of the cruise ship before a blast of water pushed her forwards again, though not enough to propel her further up the tube.

"How long do you think she was stuck?" Paige asked her TikTok followers, but many of them seemed more worried about the claustrophobia of being stuck in a plastic tube hanging over the side of a cruise ship.

One person described it as 'my kind of nightmare' and wondered how the woman got out of the waterslide.

Someone else said 'my claustrophobia would get claustrophobic', and a third bemoaned 'the anxiety I'm getting for just watching'.

Another said it was 'so triggering' to watch the video as they'd gone through the same thing, but they did explain that the slide has an emergency escape hatch which people can use to get out.

Sadly, gravity can be a harsh mistress, liable to leave you stuck in a waterslide. (TikTok/@paigejhodgson)

Considering the woman would have had to make a gravity-defying turn to continue along her way it was lucky that plenty of people were saying this waterslide had a way out for people who lost momentum part-way.

At least you'd hope that was the case and they weren't just making it up for internet points.

Some of the commenters said they'd been on this same exact slide and become stuck themselves, with one person admitting they 'got stuck in this exact water slide 5 separate times' and they 'don't know why I kept doing it'.

Among all the people saying they'd have a 'claustrophobic panic attack' there weren't many who said they'd want to go on this slide.

12 Themed Cruises You Should Have On Your Radar In 2024

T aking a cruise is an experience unlike anything else. Days at sea on a ship full of entertainment and relaxation make for a fantastic vacation. But what if you want even more from your cruise? A theme might be what's missing. In addition to all the usual cruise experiences, themed cruises allow fans of a particular artist, lifestyle, hobby (or even animal), to celebrate their passion on the high seas with activities, events, surprises, and sometimes special guests.

There are dozens of themed cruises on offer each year, usually hosted by major cruise lines like Norwegian , Carnival, and Royal Caribbean. But don't let their numbers fool you. According to  Business Insider , themed cruises are rapidly climbing in popularity, and some trips are selling out in record time. That means it's important to find your dream-themed cruise and reserve your tickets as early as possible.

Fortunately, even if they're sold out, most themed cruises will let you join a waiting list, so there's still hope! Here are 12 themed cruises that will set sail in 2024 and are well worth boarding, either now or the next time they hit the high seas.

The Emo's Not Dead Cruise

If you truly know it's not a phase, the Emo's Not Dead Cruise is perfect for you. Gather with fellow emo fans for four days (and nights) of concerts, activities, and even a private party at Great Stirrup Kay in the Bahamas. Over a dozen bands will perform, including Yellowcard, Senses Fail, and Armor for Sleep. Alongside themed activities like a masquerade ball, cruisegoers can also enjoy surprisingly cheerful activities like a bellyflop competition in the ship's pool.

The first Emo's Not Dead cruise was in 2022. Cruisegoer and emo fan TheReelChris shared highlights on  YouTube , calling it "EPIC." Fans in the comments section agree, with Schecterplayer92 adding, "This was one of the best experiences of my life." With a killer lineup and entertaining activities scheduled, it seems like Emo's Not Dead 2024 will also be a rad experience. The cruise will be hosted on the Norwegian Pearl, leaving from Miami on February 26 and returning on March 1, 2024. But what would an emo-related cruise be without a little sadness? Unfortunately, the cruise is already sold out. If you're interested, you can  sign up for the waiting list  and hope.

Meow Meow Cruise

Some of us know that no matter how great a vacation might be, cats would make it even better. Meow Meow Cruise has solved that problem. While guests unfortunately aren't allowed to bring their own furry friends aboard Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady, the four-day cruise will give them their feline fix in plenty of other ways.

Activities include cat-themed trivia and a scavenger hunt. But the best part may be communing with fellow cat people (many of whom stroll around the ship wearing cat ears). You'll also be able to mingle with real cats -- one of 2024's ports of call is Key West, where you'll find the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and its community of about 60 friendly polydactyl kitties, many of them descended from one of the author's own pets.

It's hard to find reviews for Meow Meow Cruise, but the fact that this themed cruise has been going on annually since 2015 speaks for itself. The 2024 Meow Meow Cruise sets sail from Miami on February 21, with a return date of February 25. Tickets are still available, but to be sure you don't miss out, consider booking right now.

In My Cruise Era

Sure, cruises are great — and cruising is a multi-billion dollar industry — but is anything more popular than Taylor Swift? For those who can't imagine anyone saying "no" to that question, there's no better cruise than In My Cruise Era. While not officially affiliated with Taylor Swift, this themed cruise is a passionate fan homage. Swifties will be able to dress up in their favorite Taylor-inspired looks, exchange friendship bracelets, perform their idol's songs during karaoke sessions, and more. We're also guessing there will be of lots impromptu song breaks throughout the ship from Taylor's extensive catalog.

Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas will host this cruise, which sets sail from Miami on October 21, 2024 -- which, as People Magazine points out, is one day after the Eras Tour will be in the city. Fans lucky enough to attend the concert can continue their Taylor euphoria for four more days on the high seas. Since this is a new themed cruise, there aren't any reviews, but based on the positive fan vibes from Eras Tour concerts and movie viewings, among other events, we're guessing it's going to be a great time for Swifties. Swifties must agree, since the cruise is already sold out. Cancellations do happen, though, so hopeful fans can join the waiting list.  Contact the cruise's organizers to sign up.

Disney's Halloween On The High Seas

Go on just about any cruise-related blog or website and you'll see that Disney Cruise Line's Halloween-themed cruise, officially called Halloween on the High Seas, is a popular favorite. As you probably expect from Disney, this themed cruise is perfect for a family vacation , so it's not too scary. The cruise is hosted on multiple Disney Cruise Line ships, and each one is decorated with the care and attention to detail you'll find in most Disney-related enterprises. The Pumpkin Tree is the highlight of the decor, with pumpkins that eventually appear on its branches and transform into lit and unlit jack o'lanterns.

Halloween on the High Seas also features Halloween activities (including a trick-or-treating night) and exclusive Halloween-themed desserts. Disney cruises in general are known for their opportunities to meet the studio's beloved characters, and during the Halloween on the High Seas cruises, some of those characters are in costume. Notably, Disney Cruise Line's official site tells us, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabelle Cow will be dressed as the Sanderson Sisters -- who wouldn't want to see that?

This magical mixture of whimsy, fun, and exclusive opportunities is the perfect way to cast a spell on Disney fans of all ages. Luckily, Halloween on the High Seas is held during a number of different times in September and October, so you and your family should be able to find a place on board!

The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise

Sure, Hallmark Channel Christmas movies might be a little on the cheesy side, but let's be honest: lots of us dream of being in one in real life. You can get a little of the real-life Hallmark movie experience by visiting some of the movies' filming locations , but now there's a way to have an even more immersive experience: The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise.

Passengers will get to meet Hallmark Channel movie stars, attend panels and photo ops, and get to see a new Hallmark Christmas movie before its world premiere. Maybe best of all, passengers can take part in lots of Hallmark Christmas movie-inspired activities, including tree lighting and cookie decorating -- all while wearing their favorite ugly Christmas sweaters.

2024 is the first year of the Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise. It was originally intended to be just one cruise, but a second one was added after the first one sold out. As of now, two Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruises are scheduled for 2024. Both go from Miami to the Bahamas and back and last four days in November. ... And both are sold out. But Christmas is a time of miracles, so if a Hallmark Channel Christmas experience on the high seas sounds like your dream come true, sign up for the waiting list as soon as you can!

Hurtigruten Northern Lights Cruises

Themed cruises are often about fandoms and hobbies. But Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten offers a themed cruise that's about something even bigger: the Northern Lights . There are several Northern Lights-themed cruises out there, including some luxurious options by Cunard. Unfortunately, the Northern Lights aren't always visible, but Hurtigruten stands out by offering a Northern Lights Promise for cruises scheduled between September 26 and March 31 and lasting longer than 11 days. If the Northern Lights aren't visible during your cruise, they'll give you another one. So if you're serious about seeing the Aurora Borealis, this is the company to choose.

The Northern Lights are the focus of Hurtigruten's eponymous cruises, but there are also other things to do on board, including scientific lectures and photography lessons. There are excursions, too -- notably a dog sledding option. Passengers who've taken one of Hurtigruten's cruises unanimously praise the stunning fjords and landscapes you can admire from the ship and during excursions, not to mention their experiences of seeing the Northern Lights. Some warn that the ships aren't as luxurious or modern as many other cruise ships, primarily because Hurtigruten's ships are also functional vessels intended to transport and deliver mail to various points on the Norwegian coast. Still,  Cruise Critic reviewers like cmolaison praise the friendly crew, the surprising level of comfort, and the "stunning vistas" you'll see, saying he and his family "highly recommend" taking a Hurtigruten cruise.

Cruise & Crop Crafting Cruises

If the perfect vacation for you is a combination of R&R and crafting, you're in luck! There are several crafting-themed cruises. One of the most popular is organized by Cruise & Crop, with ships around the world hosting different crafting- and arts-themed trips. This makes them the most accessible themed cruises on our list, with different price ranges, departure points, itineraries, and ports of call. One thing all crafting cruises have in common, though, is groups of like-minded people exploring their creativity amid the other joys of cruising.

For instance, one of Crop & Cruise's 2024 offerings is a Mexican Riviera cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, featuring scrapbooking and other papercraft classes taught by artist Barb Warne. The ship departs from Los Angeles on April 19, returning April 26. Many Cruise & Crop cruises sell out quickly, so if this idea has sparked both your wanderlust and your creativity, be sure to check their list of 2024 cruises and reserve as soon as you can.

Star Trek: The Cruise

For seven days and nights every year, thousands of Star Trek fans gather to be a part of a fandom extravaganza at sea. Star Trek: The Cruise is an experience that features celebrities aboard (2024's guests include LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, among many others), costume and cosplay events, and lots of fun activities.

But what makes Star Trek: The Cruise truly unique is that audience participation is very much encouraged. Passengers and celebrity guests are all considered the crew of one great, big, intergalactic vessel. Passengers get to interact with the guest stars in events like karaoke battles, and stars share parts of their earthly lives with Q&A sessions and even glimpses at other projects they may be involved in.

The first Star Trek: The Cruise was held in 2017 and since then it's been a fan favorite. Star Wars and cruising aficionado Aaron Bossig writes on  Trek Movie.com that many fans go on the cruise every year, and proudly wear t-shirts from the previous ones. He calls Star Trek: The Cruise "an extra special convention experience." 2024's edition will be held on the Mariner of the Seas, departing from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 22 and returning on February 29.

Literature Festival At Sea

Once a year, aboard the legendary Queen Mary 2, passengers can mingle with writers, poets, journalists, and critics in a full-blown literary festival in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Literature Festival at Sea invites writers in all genres to host round table discussions, participate in Q&As revolving around their work and areas of expertise, host workshops, and converse with passengers.

Whether passengers want to participate as much as possible or just attend a few events, the Festival seems to be an excellent addition to a typical Queen Mary 2 voyage. On TripAdvisor , passenger Artemis C writes of her experience at a previous Literature Festival at Sea that "the whole week was a joy".

2024's lineup features crime novelists, journalists, historians, and more, for what's sure to be a fascinating week of discussion and discovery. If you'd like to combine an elegant transatlantic cruise and a literary experience, 2024's Literature Festival at Sea will take place from November 13-20, departing from Southampton, U.K., and arriving in New York. Cunard has also launched an Australian Literature Festival at Sea, scheduled from December 11-16, 2024, on the Queen Elizabeth, which departs from and returns to Sydney.

Chefs Making Waves

Many cruise lines are proud of their food offerings. Some cruises feature dishes created by world-famous chefs, and others even host food and wine festivals. But no culinary cruise event seems quite as, well, fun, as Chefs Making Waves. This culinary-themed cruise will set sail for the first time in 2024. Onboard will be a number of beloved celebrity chefs, including Anne Burrell and the Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro. Cooking demos and, of course, food tastings of all kinds (including sit-down meals, desserts, and street food) are on the menu. Best of all, Chefs Making Waves is an all-inclusive cruise, so everyone can eat and drink without having to pay extra!

There will be all of the usual cruise-related fun, from swimming to excursions, to help you work up an appetite. There will also be unique games, with some of the chefs participating in events like bingo and a celebrity chef sing-off. If this sounds like an awesome cruise, you're not the only one who feels that way. Chefs Making Waves will take place from March 25-29, departing from Miami with excursions in Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau, Bahamas ... and it's already sold out. But you can still  sign up for the waiting list . With a little luck, you'll be able to enjoy this delicious, themed cruise experience.

Soul Train Cruise

Imagine a festival with a lineup featuring some of the best soul and R&B acts of all time. Now imagine it's on a relaxing cruise ship. This dream is actually reality -- it's called the Soul Train Cruise. The popular themed cruise will be celebrating its 11th year in 2024 and the lineup is on fire. Dozens of groups and artists will perform, including The Temptations, Boyz II Men, and En Vogue. Passengers can also learn how to dance like people did back in the old school days of Soul Train's TV show, with lessons from some of the show's actual dancers. There will also be wine tastings, Q&A's, comedy shows, and a lot more.

With all of this on offer, it's no surprise that the Soul Train Cruise is sold out. But sign up on the waiting list and keep your calendar free from January 27-February 3, and you may get lucky. If you do, the cruise leaves from Fort Lauderdale, with ports of call in Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and St. Maarten.

The Gothic Cruise

The Gothic Cruise is an annual event held on an ordinary cruise ship. Goths mingle with "norms" but have their own private events on board, mostly DJ sets and concerts. There's also a masquerade ball, with Goths decked out in their finest Victorian-style garb ... as long as it meets ship safety requirements, that is. The cruise's website specifies that simulated weapons aren't allowed and notes that hoop skirts are fine for the ball but not in the ship's dining areas, "due to the close proximity of the tables". And yet, the Goth community thrives on these cruises -- and even gains norm fans along the way.

In a Porthole Magazine article about the Gothic Cruise, longtime attendee Spike Pittman says that many mainstream passengers are wary of the Goths at first, "But by the end they're begging to get into our private events." Some even book their future cruises to coincide with the Gothic Cruise, even if they don't plan on attending every event.

The Gothic Cruise has been held since 1989. Cruising doesn't seem very Goth, but in the end, the article points out, it comes down to what all themed cruises offer: a sense of community (in this case, one that often stays up all night and sleeps during the day). If this moves your little black heart, the 2024 Gothic Cruise will be held on the Norwegian Escape (but book through the Gothic Cruise's website for private event access), departing from Orlando on March 2, and returning March 9.
