Nipsey Hussle Announces ‘Victory Lap’ Tour Dates
Following the release of his Victory Lap LP, Nipsey Hussle will be hitting the road in June for the Victory Lap tour. The rapper announced his scheduled tour dates late Wednesday night.
The 11 city tour will start at Irving Plaza in New York City on June 4th followed by shows in Maryland and Boston before he heads south to show Georgia and Texas some love. The tour will finish up on Nipsey’s stomping grounds in the West Coast and will perform at the Staples Center on June 23 with his final show of the tour in Seattle on June 29.
The largely independent Slauson rapper released Victory Lap in partnership with Atlantic Records making the album his major label debut. The LP sold a reported 53,000 copies in its first week which was good for No. 4 on the Billboard charts, a solid debut for an independent artist like Nipsey. This album was easily Nip’s most anticipated album and the credit for that is largely due to the rapper’s business acumen and marketing strategy.
Fans may remember Nipsey’s Crenshaw mixtape that he released for free but also sold physical copies of the project for $100 as part of his Proud 2 Pay movement. The “Blue Laces 2” rapper did the same with his Mailbox Money project except he upped the price to $1000 a copy.
Kendrick Lamar, YG, Puff Daddy , and The Dream are just some of the artists featured on the LP, so it would be no surprise if they made an appearance during Nipsey’s tour dates. Tour schedules are always subject to added dates, and with Nipsey only taking on 11 dates so far, it would also be no surprise to see some possible intermediate stops between New York and Los Angeles.

Victory Lap
By Sheldon Pearce
All Money In / Atlantic
February 24, 2018
It’s taken Los Angeles MC Nipsey Hussle longer than most to create his moment. The seasoned mixtape veteran has been on the indie-rap circuit for almost a decade and was once touted as a future star. When fame didn’t come, he made his own seat at the table, infamously selling copies of his Crenshaw tape for $100 each and getting JAY-Z to endorse him and buy 100 of them . He parlayed his rap successes into local business ventures—including a hair shop and a “ smart store ” for his clothing line—and became a hometown hero who turned his talent into a small merchandising empire. Victory Lap , his first album on a multi-project deal with Atlantic Records, is more than six years in the making. It is formally his “debut album” but functionally his big cash in. Bridging several generations of West Coast rap, Victory Lap uses his cache of war stories to power the most gripping entry in his catalog, recouping an investment.
His raps are still riddled with flashbacks to gangland survivalism, but he’s focused on his pivot to legitimacy, how he flipped Cripping on Crenshaw into a lucrative indie-rap career and then flipped that into an entrepreneurial enterprise. Black capitalism is foremost on his mind these days; he wants to build up his community and get others to follow, advocating for the grooming of more strong black men. But Nipsey’s ambitions can be more problematic than they seem on the surface: He has used his enthusiasm can to fuel homophobia , denigrating many of the men he claims to want to empower. There are nuggets to take aways from his lectures, but the primary lesson to be learned here is just how ingrained “toughness” is in representations of manhood.
As statements go, Victory Lap is more of a remembrance than a celebration. From digging up $100,000 his brother buried in his mother’s backyard for safekeeping only to discover half the money had molded to fighting off surprise challengers trying to steal jewelry from his entourage in Vegas, the album painstakingly documents the life of a reformed bruiser turned hood economist. Self-taught and self-funded, Nipsey fought to escape the cycle of an existence measured only in summers—time spent as “the man” on the block or serving sentences in the pen. He has been chasing sustainability since he was a teenager, and now that he has it, he’s appreciative, relieved even. He doesn’t just bask in his moment, though, he challenges others to pursue the same goals, as on “Million While You Young,” which equates money with salvation (“I can tell you niggas how I came up/Similar to climbin’ out the grave, huh”).
His flow is effortless, letting off stream-of-consciousness musings on death and loss that carry anxiety and paranoia within: “All my partners steady passin’, tryna wiggle through this madness/Tryna fight this gravity at times and I swear I could feel it pull me backwards/Puttin’ thousands on they caskets, tryna pick the right reactions/I appreciate the process, but I’m so conflicted about the status,” he raps on “Status Symbol 3.” Ghosts of lost friends and loved ones haunt his raps, the echoes of shots fired long ago still ring in his ears, and his verses are full of close calls. There are subtle tensions within even his most gaudy tales, as no win has come without consequence or sacrifice. But his raps aren’t just a mark of persistence, they are a push to improve—both his state of mind and quality of life.
Nipsey’s rhymes are designed to string out little observations until they form a big idea. They aren’t instantly quotable, but they slowly unspool to reveal kernels of fortune-cookie wisdom. “This ain’t entertainment, it’s for niggas on the slave ship/These songs just the spirituals I swam against them waves with,” he raps on “Dedication.” The remarks don’t always connect or make sense in sequence but they can create powerful impressions. He stays on-message almost the entire record, promoting the expansion of black wealth. On “Last Time That I Checc’d,” which is in part an homage to Jeezy , he salutes hustlers in the streets trying to feed their kids and single moms struggling to make ends meet. But he calls for more “black owners” and presents himself as the template.
Debuts are usually albums of firsts, but Victory Lap is full of sequels and standards. When it isn’t heavily indebted to his West Coast forebears Snoop Dogg , Ice-T , and Dj Quik , or literally adding a follow-up in a song series—“Blue Laces 2,” “Keyz 2 the City 2”—it is returning to Nipsey’s well for hard-nosed bully rap. The hour-long album honors all the work he’s put in and looks back at all he’s achieved, but it also looks forward to all he has yet to build and all those he can still inspire. His tactics can be tone-deaf and without nuance, but he knows exactly who he’s speaking to and for.

Review: "Victory Lap" Confirms Nipsey Hussle's Marathon Paid Off
- 4.3 Community Rating
- 34 Rated the Album
- 24 Gave it a 5/5
By conventional rap wisdom standards, Nipsey Hussle isn’t supposed to be at the point where he’s releasing a major label blockbuster — complete with a feature from this generation’s torchbearer (i.e. hood testimonial “Dedication” with Kendrick Lamar) and sizing himself up to be a marquee player in Hip Hop.
Here is an artist — *ahem* — gangsta rapper (according to conventional rap wisdom standards) who experienced his freshman renaissance nearly a decade ago and seemed rooted in his independent shuffle. The California Crip’s biggest claim to fame was for spearheading a Proud 2 Pay campaign where he doled out physical copies of a $100 mixtape that prompted JAY-Z himself to buy 100 copies in support of the movement.
Regardless of how much or little you know Nipsey’s background, the fact remains that his studio debut album, Victory Lap , serves as the ultimate starting point for the Crenshaw native; a coveted distinction for any artist in a well-established era where mixtapes, unofficial singles and yes, even Instagram, can all yield the same spotlight. From the onset, the album’s brassy and conspicuous score (handled largely by longtime collaborators Mike & Keys ) establishes its wish to be a primetime Hip Hop event, without the reliance on pop sensibilities or hooks tailor-made for radio.
Such a wish is made apparent on the one-two punch of the title-track opener and leadoff single “Rap Niggas.” The former is a scenic tale of rags-to-riches ascension overtop Stacy Barthe’s hallowing vocals and a downshifting keyboard labyrinth. The latter is a proverbial line drawn in the sand between the bottomless pool of rappers made possible by Neighborhood Nip’s throaty growls — that allows for the end bar of “nigga” to emote a melodic effect — and 1500 or Nothin’s obvious nod to past West Coast gangsta anthems with high-frequency piercing sonics.
From there, Victory Lap brings on the type of onslaught that will have listeners flip-flopping on their favorite record. Nimble lyricism is hyper-flexed on tracks like the Diddy-backed “Young Niggas” (“Ballin’ since my brother used to hustle out the Von’s/ A couple hundred thousand up, he took the shovel to the lawn/ No exaggeration for the content of my songs/ When he went to dig it up, shit, a hundred-something gone”). Others sport an ideal fusion of cadence, as heard on the excellent Dom Kennedy and Belly bonus cut, “Who Knew,” which proves songs about reliving past struggles will never rust when coupled with intoxicating production.
The trilogy-completing “Status Symbol 3” encompasses the best of both worlds with its pleasantly obnoxious bass knocks, guest star Buddy’s dazzling “Drip! Drip! Drip! Drip!” hook and Nipsey’s swaggy intellectualism. Such a record is not only great for discography building but it’s bound to pull in some new fans with its catchiness.
Victory Lap ’s aspiration to be validated as a classic Hip Hop album never sways and it checks off a ton of boxes, from the rhyme-heavy bars on “Grinding All My Life” to the artistically ambitious “Bases Loaded,” the CeeLo record that broaches new territory for the Crenshaw councilman.
Nipsey doesn’t come off as an innovator as much as he does an enforcer upholding time-tested blueprints. Taking on that role leaves room for growth in his approach to song themes, like the bullying “Succa Niggas,” a solid record in its own right but that lacks a wide-reaching appeal. Or the YG-assisted “Last Time That I Checced,” where they exhibit the same chemistry as when they took the blue and red stitches from the American flag and used it to towel whip Donald Trump almost two years ago , but regress this time around by resorting back to the block party.
Minor potholes aside, Victory Lap not only boosts Nipsey’s stock but it raises expectations for the next time he eyes a checkered flag. The benchmark for quality has been set and the race to officially hit the championship podium is only getting revved up.

Nipsey Hussle Delivers Street Sermons on ‘Victory Lap’ Album
Nipsey Hussle has been practicing quality over quantity since he low-rode his way into the game more than a decade ago. The Slauson boy has dropped 12 solo mixtapes and a handful of collab projects that speak to and for the streets. And he really lives the hustler mentality that he weaves into his bars and hooks—just look at the knowledge he drops at music industry summits, his investments in the cryptocurrency space and bossed-up partnership with Atlantic Records .
But a great mixtape run and boundary-pushing business moves can only take a rapper so far. Nipsey's perpetually delayed debut album Victory Lap is finally here, and it's well worth the wait. Everything fans have grown to love about Nipsey is amplified on this album. His street talk here is scripture-worthy—he practically evangelizes the gospel of how to maneuver and escape the trap.
The Kendrick Lamar-featured “Dedication” tells both L.A. artists’ rags-to-riches stories with a damn-near how-to manual from Nipsey: “Couple mil, tour the world, now my life crackin'/Cook the books, bring it back so it's no taxes/Royalties, publishing, plus I own masters/I'll be damned if I slave for some white crackers/I was mappin' this out, I hit the heights backwards.” Similarly, “Hussle & Motivate” —which samples and pitches down Jay-Z's classic 1998 track "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)"—lives up to its title. He raps: "This is for who walked down that road/Sold everything, but they soul/Straight off the curb, real niggas rich as you nerds/Addressed to whom it may concern/I don't do this for nothing.”
While Victory Lap is heavy on thug motivation, it also has some serious West Coast bounce. Nipsey is no stranger to crafting a twangy single that's perfect for cruising down Slauson Ave in a 1964 Impala, and this album serves them right up. “Last Time That I Checc’d” with YG could be a new SoCal anthem thanks to the elastic bassline and piercing synths laid by Kacey Khaliel, Brody Brown and Larrance Dopson. “Succa Proof,” featuring Konshens and J. Black, pairs that iconic Dr. Dre-esque synth-whistle with pounding 808s that bang.
Victory Lap confirms Nipsey’s competency as a leading figure in the culture but doesn’t push his personal envelope any further. There isn’t one song on the album that sounds distinctly like Nipsey Hussle in 2018. The music is strong and flows together nicely but he still raps with the same articulate cadence he's used for the past 10 years. It begs questions like: Did his previous two "Status Symbol" songs really need a third instalment? And, did it need to be included on this imperative debut offering? If he had bumped up a song’s tempo past 100 BPM or had experimented with a more micro-specific theme other than what comes from the emblematic church of Crenshaw, Victory Lap could have charted new territory while maintaining that classic Neighborhood Nip everyone knows and loves.
There is no denying how pleasantly digestible Victory Lap , despite the minor idleness. The beats bump, the flows follow suit and the messages of humbly hustling are crystal clear. After all, Nipsey has been working more than a decade to get this coveted debut off the ground and sure, there’s a little turbulence along the way but his formidability as a rapper, businessman and human being come across vividly at each turn.

20 artists who were discovered on SoundCloud
Posted: May 25, 2024 | Last updated: May 25, 2024
Started in 2007 as a place for musicians to collaborate and share recordings, SoundCloud has quickly become one of the best places for up-and-coming artists of all genres to get their work noticed. Here are some of music’s most popular and bestselling names who have used the online platform to launch their careers, with collaborations, major record deals, and awards coming soon after their decision to upload.
Seen as an overnight sensation after taking the world by storm in 2019 , Lizzo has actually been working in the music industry for years , both as a classical flutist and as a member of a prog rock band, before pursuing her solo career as a singer and rapper. The Grammy-winning singer of “Juice,” “Truth Hurts,” and “Good as Hell” first began posting songs on SoundCloud back in 2011 . Her tracks “Luv It” and “Faded” were popular enough to land her a spot on The Late Show in 2014 and the opportunity to work with Prince . Her latest single , “About Damn Time,” is already a hit, and she will release her next album in July 2022.
Post Malone
The “Rockstar” and “Circles” singer has found success with his genre-mixing blend of rap/pop/rock, but it was one fortunate SoundCloud upload that helped kick off the superstar’s career. After posting his music video “White Iverson” in 2015, the musician quickly earned buzz from Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller, and caught the attention of record labels. The song reached more than a million plays within a month, and Malone soon had a contract with Republic Records. In 2019, when he released his popular and critically acclaimed album Hollywood’s Bleeding , Malone said , “These last couple of years have felt like two weeks… I’m not trying to make hit records. I’m just trying to make something that I love.”
Before going solo, the young rhythm and blues/hip-hop performer started in the pop band Poplyfe, which made a successful appearance on the TV show America’s Got Talent . The band’s ultimate demise was Kehlani’s good fortune, as it pushed her to release her mixtapes Cloud 19 and You Should Be Here on SoundCloud . It was a big hit with critics and fans, garnering millions of plays on the service, and taking the artist from being “broke and homeless sleeping on couches” to earning two Grammy nominations and charting multiple songs on the Billboard 200. The proudly queer artist has also collaborated with huge music stars like Ty Dolla $ign, Justin Bieber, Cardi B, and Zayn Malik.
At the end of 2021, Atlanta’s Future became the first rapper to reach 10 million followers on SoundCloud . The platform has always been a successful one for the Grammy-winning artist, who, in the early 2011s, started posting mixtapes and singles on the site, which helped him grow from the fringes into a rap superstar. In 2020, his collaboration with Lil Uzi Vert , Pluto x Baby Pluto , debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard chart, and his most recent track, “Worst Day,” became an anti-Valentine’s Day anthem in February of 2022.
Norwegian DJ Kygo might be internationally recognized now, but before 2013, he was just a business student with musical aspirations. That year, after posting some of his remixes to SoundCloud, his popularity started to grow, and by 2015, songs like “Firestone” had helped him to become the first artist to reach one billion streams on Spotify. Dubbed, “tropical house,” his brand of pop-centric, mellow EDM appeals to music lovers the world over and has earned him 55 songs to date on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.
AllMusic describes her unique blend of bubble-gum pop and gritty rap as “hardcore Powerpuff Girl.” Born Maria Kelly and raised in Maryland, Rico Nasty built up a fan following by posting singles and mixtapes on SoundCloud when she was still in high school, or what she calls the “ good old days ” when you could post your music anywhere. Early tracks like “Hey Arnold,” “iCarly,” and “Iggady [Remix]” led to attention on other social media platforms, more singles, and finally a debut studio album, Nightmare Vacation , in 2020. In September of 2021, she made good use of SoundCloud again, posting five new tracks to surprise her fans.
Billie Eilish
Multi-award winning singer Billie Eilish is a huge global sensation and one of the most recognizable musical artists in the world, but there was a time when she was just a teen singing with her brother in her modest Los Angeles home. Eilish and her brother, Finneas, who collaborate together, put a few songs on SoundCloud, “for fun and for our friends to listen to. We had no intention for them,” she explained . In 2016, they posted their song “Ocean Eyes,” and within days, the song had reached 50,000 plays, with many more to come. Eilish’s debut studio album, 2019’s When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? , came soon after and her path to stardom was set.
Lil Uzi Vert
Early songs like “Motorola” and “All Night,” which Lil Uzi Vert shared on SoundCloud back in 2014 and 2015, helped pave the way for the Philly rapper to become a frequent name on the Billboard Hot 100. His collaboration with Migos on the 2017 hit song “Bad and Boujee” brought even further success. In 2021, he announced his forthcoming album The Pink Tape and fans are eagerly awaiting its release.
Bryson Tiller
Rapper and rhythm and blues singer Bryson Tiller used SoundCloud to drop his debut mixtape in 2011. The Louisville performer found a quick path to fame soon after , when his heartfelt and catchy song “Don’t” attracted the attention of listeners, critics, and superstar Drake. Tiller’s days of working at UPS and Papa John’s were over, and he even turned down a deal with Drake’s record company in favour of a contract with RCA. His debut 2015 album, Trapsoul , won two BET Awards, and he has since released two more successful albums , 2017’s True to Self and 2020’s A N N I V E R S A R Y .
Her song “Pilates,” with bold references to the Jenners and Miley Cyrus, was the single that brought her brand of brash and powerful rap to the forefront. The Brooklyn-based MC started her SoundCloud account in 2015 and had more than one million plays by the end of the year. Her EP, Thirst Trap, was well received by fans and critics, and she released her first full-length album , Black Kate Moss , in 2018.
Chance the Rapper
Known as the platform that’s been especially helpful to up-and-coming rappers , SoundCloud played a huge part in Chance the Rapper’s career. His third mixtape, Coloring Book , became the platform’s most-listened-to album of 2016. It also became the first non-major label release album to win a Grammy based on streams alone. The Chicago rapper is a well-known activist and collaborator with other musical artists. His first full-length album, The Big Day , was released in 2019 and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
The London singer was a competitor on The X Factor with a trio named Arize before putting her solo talents out there for the world to hear. She released original songs on SoundCloud in 2015, as well as brief performance videos on Instagram, which soon caught the attention of DJ Mustard. He signed the rhythm and blues singer to his 10 Summers label, and worldwide success followed. Her 2018 song, “Boo’d Up,” became a worldwide hit and won a Grammy for best rhythm and blues song. She released her second full-length album, Heart on My Sleeve , in 2022.
Nipsey Hussle
The late hip-hop star joined SoundCloud in 2013 , releasing his eighth official mixtape, Crenshaw . He was already establishing a reputation thanks to previous underground mixtapes he made as part of the LA rap scene. Streaming success after Crenshaw led to commercial success, as well as recognition from and collaborations with rap greats. Hussle’s acclaimed 2018 album, Victory Lap , earned a Best Rap Album Grammy nomination, at the same time as his community activism and reputation as an outspoken advocate for Black justice was being established. The former gang member was tragically shot to death on March 31, 2019, at the age of 33.
The musician born Montero Lamar Hill , but better known as Lil Nas X, is one of SoundCloud’s biggest success stories. After purchasing a beat online for $30, the rapper created the catchy song “Old Town Road,” which mashed country and rap in a unique way. He posted the song to SoundCloud in December of 2018, and after it was shared on TikTok , it became a massive, worldwide hit. The song was one of the most streamed of 2019 and remained in the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 for 19 weeks. His ability to produce genre-bending hits continued with his debut full album Montero , which he released in 2021.
Proving that controversy is one of the best sales pitches , Dallas-based rapper Tay-K’s notoriety came from a savvy use of SoundCloud and other social media platforms, while trying to evade a murder charge. After taking off his ankle bracelet and going on the run, the rapper, born Taymore McIntyre, uploaded a song and video called “The Race .” The viral hit was remixed by XXXTentacion, Lil Bibby, and Lil Yachty and became a hit for Tay-K, debuting at No. 70 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2017 . Whether he gets another chance to make hits depends on how long he remains in prison.
Grammy-nominated pop and rhythm and blues singer Khalid Robinson, known simply as Khalid, began to get serious about his music while he was still in high school . He uploaded the songs “Saved” and “Stuck on You” to his SoundCloud page, which soon caught the attention of Tunji Balogun, vice president at A and R for RCA Records. After hearing “Location,” the song that would become Khalid’s breakthrough hit, Balogun said, “I thought, ‘Oh, my God, this kid knows how to make a hit,’ in addition to being a talented vocalist and being ahead of his age.” The song was nominated for a 2017 Grammy, while Khalid continued to make hits and collaborate with artists such as Logic and Billie Eilish. In 2021, he released the album Everything Is Changing .
The Puerto Rican singer/songwriter made history when his 2020 all-Spanish record, Las Que No Iban a Salir, became the first to top the Billboard 200. In 2016, his SoundCloud song “Diles” reached one million plays in only two weeks, and the artist said he was working at his grocery store job when he took his first call from a record producer. Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is praised for his ability to mix Latin soul, pop, rhythm and blues, hard-hitting trap beats, and reggaeton. His latest album, Un Verano Sin Ti , includes the song “Moscow Mule,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts.
In 2021, SoundCloud paid tribute to some of its greatest success stories, including rapper Young Thug, whose 2014 debut on the platform, and songs like the hit “Digits,” propelled him to fame. “His work and legacy serve as a reminder of the power of originality and experimentation in music,” SoundCloud said on social media. Born Jeffery Lamar Williams , the rapper has collaborated on several hit songs, including “Havana” by Camila Cabello and “This Is America” with Childish Gambino, which also won a 2019 Grammy for Song of the Year. His debut studio album, So Much Fun , hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200. In 2022, Young Thug was arrested on racketeering charges due to his alleged connection to street-gang activity.
Cool musician Gerald “G-Eazy” Gillum got his start making and selling mixtapes in the Bay area. In 2014, before releasing his hit major label debut album, These Things Happen , the rapper spent months dropping “buzz tracks” on SoundCloud to attract fans and promote his work. He went on to collaborate with Britney Spears and Lil Wayne and has had several hits make the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
Justine Skye
Brooklyn-born rhythm and blues singer Justine Skye was huge on SoundCloud in 2015 , releasing a stream of new material that got her noticed by fans and critics alike. Already known for her single “Collide” featuring a guest verse from Tyga, Skye used her success on online platforms to build her way to her first major label release, 2018’s Ultraviolet . In 2021, she released the album Space and Time , which was produced by Timbaland.

That doesn't mean forgetting where you come from, but it requires acknowledging the reality you were born into and the power you have to change that reality for the better.'
'So whenever you're in the City of Angels and you see this star, I hope it encourages you to break away from whatever might be holding you back and for you to run your marathon until God says that it's finished,' the mother-of-two concluded.

Hussle's sister, Samantha Smith, also spoke at the ceremony as she gushed that saying she is 'proud' of her brother would be an 'understatement.'
'Nip the Great, look at who you are, look at what you did. I'm in awe but I'm not surprised. You've been a star in my eyes, the family's eyes, God's eyes, far before the accolades caught up. You've affected the lives of so many in the realist ways -- the realist ways, the realist ways. You've been a pillar in our family, in the community,' she marveled.
Smith went on to say she's 'always been amazed and impressed' by the example her sibling set and feels 'blessed and grateful' to call him her brother.
