HELP! Please sign our petition to reinstate the live CCTV traffic camera feeds for the M62

As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the M62 (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.

We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.

Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.

The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!

M62 Roadworks

The following roadworks have been reported by various highways agencies and official transport sources.Click on a roadworks item to view more details on the traffic map.

The M62 motorway is a major eastwest transportation route through Northern England, connecting Liverpool, Manchester and Hull. It starts at the junction of the M60 and the M62 near Manchester, and terminates at Clifton, near Brighouse in West Yorkshire. It was built between 1964 and 1976.

Safety on the M62 has historically been a concern, with the road having a higher than average number of fatalities and serious injuries. In 2004, the Highways Agency set up a safety scheme on the M62 known as Operation Edgeware, which resulted in a reduction of fatalities and serious injury accidents by around 50%.

In recent years the M62 has seen several improvements in safety, including the introduction of dedicated hard shoulder running systems and an Automated Incident Detection System. In the 2016/17 financial year statistics indicate that the road saw a total of 408 accidents resulting in personal injury, of which 43 resulted in fatalities.

Drivers face five-mile queues after M62 car fire

Drivers were warned to expect delays on the M62 following a car fire. Emergency services were at the scene this morning (September 15).

It followed a fire between junctions 22 at Denshaw and 21 at Milnrow, on the westbound carriageway. Two lanes were closed through the area.

Motorists faced delays of around 40 minutes, with five-mile queues approaching the scene. A spokesperson for National Highways North West posted on X: "The #M62 westbound has 2 lanes (of 3) closed between J22 (#Denshaw) and J21 (#Rochdale) due to a car fire.

In less than a week, construction will commence on a pioneering £22m railway bridge in the north west, believed to be the first of its kind.

The M62 motorway is set to experience an unprecedented closure on September 6 as Network Rail embarks on the reconstruction of a 42-metre-long, 2,000 tonne railway bridge that spans the M62 in Castleton, near Rochdale.

This month will see two weekend closures on the eastbound carriageway between J18 and J20 and the westbound carriageway between J19 and J20.

As the motorway prepares for its imminent closure, Manchester Evening News was granted exclusive access to the construction site adjacent to the M62, offering a glimpse into the colossal scale of the project.

The construction site is located just beyond Manchester Golf Club in Middleton and is situated right next to the motorway, mere hundreds of yards from the bridge.

This location proved perfect when two 42 metre, 70 tonne steel beams were transported over from Ireland and delivered via the M62 during an overnight closure last month.

Since then, engineers have been diligently preparing the bridge for its installation in September. The team has already begun assembling the bridge, installing the walkway, preparing the abutments (bridge supports), and conducting some waterproofing.

During the planned road closure, engineers will begin by dismantling and removing the old bridge via the M62, followed by the installation of a new bridge during the subsequent weekend.

Alerting motorists as far upstream as Scotland, National Highways has highlighted the essential nature of the road as a primary northern artery linking the west with the east.

The project, spearheaded by Network Rail in collaboration with National Highways, is being recognised as one of the most significant railway bridge projects in recent times in the region.

Network Rail sponsor Olivia Boland commented: "The main construction will be complete by September 25 this year. It is very common for us to use Saturday nights for our works when the trains are not running, so there will be some follow ups to finish the welding and stressing on the track."

She added: "The railway will open with a small speed restriction on it (50mph) and then after five to six weeks when the railway works are done it will reopen to line speed of 75mph."

Discussing the urgency of the works, Boland said: "This is a sped up project given the fact the bridge isn't in the best condition and is deteriorating. We used specialist designers with lots of experience - getting good heads together.

"It's quite difficult to say (how much longer the current bridge would last), you can't put a timeline on it but we have been instructed to replace it within two years. That doesn't mean it will fall down catastrophically, but that it is just recommended to be replaced."

"We (Network Rail) replace bridges all the time but this size and scale, over the motorway, is something we don't do that often, especially in the north west. It is quite a novelty for us to do - it's probably one of the first in the north west for us to replace a motorway bridge."

Project Manager at Network Rail, William Brandon, has highlighted the significant improvement in safety and longevity the bridge replacement will bring. He further revealed the crucial role of Castleton bridge in the UK's energy network, with freight trains travelling to and from Drax power station carrying 6 per cent of the country's energy supply.

Motorists are also set to face disruptions, as the eastbound carriageway of the M62 will see closures from 9pm on September 6 until 6am on September 9, and again for a similar duration between September 20 and September 23.

Officials encourage drivers to delay travel or seek alternative routes during these periods to avoid the impacted section of the motorway.

National Highways has advised that the upcoming roadworks are scheduled during a period of lower demand, coinciding with the warmer season. With the return of schools and students heading to university, officials believe this timing will minimise disruption due to reduced holiday traffic and favourable weather conditions.

Dee Murray, operations manager at National Highways, commented: "Our role in this is making sure we're patrolling the network with cameras as well. We will also be working with our media teams to make sure that the public are aware of the closures and know what is going on.

"We know it's going to be a busy weekend, we've worked with Network Rail on the planning as we want to choose a time to cause less disruption - that is why we chose to do this over the weekend.

"We purposely avoided the holiday period to get round this but there is no way of doing a project of this size without disruption. The work is done to minimise that disruption not just for the motorists but the people in the local area as well."

Murray further explained that the holiday period typically sees an increase in drivers who are less familiar with the road network, hence carrying out the works during term time is more practical. National Highways has emphasised their commitment to keeping the public well-informed about the impending closures.

Motorists have been warned of two weekend closures that will disrupt cross-Pennine travel plans, affecting the motorway linking Liverpool and Hull as well as Manchester and Leeds. Drivers are advised to avoid this section of the M62 if possible, although diversions will be in place.

The timing of the work over the weekends means different closure and diversion arrangements for the westbound and eastbound carriageways. The eastbound carriageway will be closed from junction 18 of the M62 at Simister Island interchange to junction 20 of the M62 at Rochdale.

Meanwhile, the westbound carriageway will be shut between junction 20 at Rochdale and junction 19 at Heywood.

Eastbound drivers will be diverted via the strategic road network, with those coming from the M66 or clockwise M60 and reaching Simister Island directed to junction 21 of the M60 at Chadderton. From there, they should use the northbound A663 (Broadway) and northbound A627M to join the M62 at junction 20.

Westbound drivers diverted off the M62 at junction 20 will be rerouted back onto the motorway via Middleton using the southbound A627(M), southbound A664 Rochdale Road and northbound A6046 Hollin Lane, re-joining the M62 at junction 19.

There is an online camera with a panoramic view of the city of Irkutsk and its bridge. Located on Lake Baikal, Irkutsk, where the live broadcast comes from, is the old city of Siberia with 18th-century buildings constructed in the style of Siberian or Irkutsk baroque. Here, ancient lace wooden houses are located next to modern multi-story buildings.

Irkutsk, the view from which this webcam opens well, has been included in the list of historical settlements where the old layout and buildings have been preserved. The city has more than 680 historical and cultural monuments.

The most interesting part of Irkutsk, whose center is shown in the live camera , is the complexes of the oldest part of the city: the Spasskaya Church of the early 18th century, the Epiphany Cathedral of the late 18th century, the monument to Emperor Alexander III (now called the “ First Pioneers of Siberia” ) and the building of the East-Siberian Department of Russian Geographical society . Also, Irkutsk has the largest number of baroque churches in Siberia.

In Irkutsk, where the live feed comes from, there are many interesting museums, for example, the Irkutsk Regional Art Museum named after V.P. Sukachev is the oldest and richest art museum in Siberia with a collection of works of art by the Irkutsk public figure Vladimir Sukachev . The museum also houses ancient Russian and Siberian icons, an iconic wooden sculpture of the 18th century and a portrait gallery.

The Irkutsk Regional Museum of Local Lore is notable for its exposition – “The History of the Irkutsk Region from the Paleolithic to the Present Day.”

Museum-Estate of the Decembrist Trubetskoy , opened in 1970, is connected with the Trubetskoy family. Here you can get acquainted with the life of the famous Decembrist. The estate of another Decembrist – S. G. Volkonsky , is also of great interest.

The Museum of History of Irkutsk will tell about the city starting from the 17th century.

Irkutsk Mineralogical Museum named after Sidorov A.V . is one of the five best mineralogical museums in Russia with a collection of minerals from the Irkutsk region online , and minerals from around the world (1,500 species).

An interesting attraction of Irkutsk, which panorama is clearly visible in the online live camera, is the Angara icebreaker , the only vessel from the first icebreaking vessels that has survived in Russia to this day. Since 1991, the exposition of the I rkutsk Regional Museum of Local Lore “History of Navigation on Lake Baikal” has been operating here.

Also in the temple rests part of Theodore of Tomsk relics.
