L'Invitation Au Voyage by Louis Vuitton
Paris and its mysteries... For centuries, the most wonderful intrigues have been woven in the Louvre, a haven of culture and history. An intrepid young woman enters this universal temple and unwinds the skein of time. After an encounter with the Mona Lisa and the Italian masters, armed with a key, she releases the secrets -- also desired by a man hot on her heels -- enclosed for more than 150 years in a legendary trunk created by Louis Vuitton.
Like a thread stretching across time and space, a hot-air balloon rises above the Cour Carrée. The beautiful unknown woman leaves the Louvre for a far-off destination in pursuit of her destiny.

DAVID BOWIE 's new Louis Vuitton campaign has been unveiled for the first time and we have the images to show you. See the initial ideas for the advert with the final storyboard, then go behind the scenes as the campaign is photographed by David Sims. The advert is the second stage of a film, starring Arizona Muse , that was first launched last November - showing the journey of the Vuitton woman and entitled L'Invitation Au Voyage . Muse's adventure starts in Paris at the Louvre, before she is whisked off in a hot-air balloon that takes her to Venice - where she meets Bowie. Cue picturesque shots of the model travelling along Venetian canals in an old-fashioned boat and decadent scenes of a masked ball - a more glamorous version of the masked, surreal soirée seen in 1986 cult film Labyrinth , which also starred Bowie. Unsurprisingly, the musician also sings a track from his new album, The Next Day . The full film - which promotes Vuitton's new Tambour watch and Vivienne bag - will premiere on the label's app on November 7. A shortened clip will be shown on television on November 10, while the campaign images will appear in magazines and newspapers later this month. Watch the teaser film below:

Arizona Muse Stars for Louis Vuitton L’Invitation Au Voyage
By Natalie White
A t the Cour Carré of the Louvre, the site of Louis Vuitton 's big-budget fashion shows for the past few seasons, a red-and-white-striped hot air balloon carrying model Arizona Muse in its basket recently lifted off for the cameras of Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin , who filmed the French luxury label's latest push into television and cinema advertising.
The one-minute commercials from Louis Vuitton debuted Sunday on CBS in the U.S., TF1 in France, Channel 4 in the U.K., and on 15 channels in China. They were also aired on Monday in Italy, Russia, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong. In the following week, the ads will screen in cinemas across countries including Ukraine and Germany. A two-and-a-half-minute "director’s cut" has been made available on Louis Vuitton’s website and various social media presence like Facebook.
With original music by composed by John Murphy, supermodel Arizona Muse features with Italian masterpieces in a museum setting. She is seen with the Mona Lisa, before using a key on her necklace to unlock a Vuitton trunk she encounters.
From the inside lid she plucks a letter, tucks it into her purse and makes her escape into the sunset-streaked Paris sky as a handsome man trails her. In a travel-inspired theme, Arizona is seen with the Louis Vuitton Speedy handbag in Monogram Empreinte leather, and the limited edition key pendant.
The video commercial is the latest example of Vuitton’s "institutional" advertising, reinforcing the label's travel heritage and artisanal roots — as a complement to its fashion advertising. Van Lamsweerde and Matadin, who shot Vuitton’s first fashion advertising, said the film is an invitation on a journey opening "the pathways of knowledge, initiation, mystery and curiosity."
Louis Vuitton intends to let the story unfold further, with the next episode slated to be unveiled in 2013.

Louis Vuitton L’Invitation au Voyage Campaign
Updated on: March 19, 2019
FASHION STYLES , LOUIS VUITTON
The second chapter of an intriguing story about fantasy and drama comes together in Louis Vuitton L’invitation au Voyage. A young woman, Arizona Muse, captured in a dream was taking a Venetian adventure, starting her journey on air balloon and enjoying her view of the beautiful city full of lights. In the middle of the night, three royal soldiers pulled her balloon down as she prepared her arrival in Venice. Her elegance was radiated by the Louis Vuitton pumps in snakes’ skin, the Vivienne bag in black from the Parnassea collection and her black evening dress.
The journey continued by meeting with David Bowie, who took a look at her eyes and was mesmerized by her beauty. On the same time, the harpsichord was playing the music : ‘I’d Rather Be High’, clarifying her current emotional feeling.
Arizona Muse was enthusiast by the experience and as she closed her eyes, suddenly woke up. Everyone disappeared, David Bowie was nowhere to be found and the music has stopped. It’s daytime now and the journey was just a dream, but one that would be engraved in her heart forever.
The Vivienne bag is one of Louis Vuitton most wanted accessory from the Parnassea collection. It’s made from exceptionally strong calf leather and has a gold Louis Vuitton initials signed on the front. David Bowie wore a Tambour Evolution watch, bold and modern style while Arizona chose a monogram Idylle 3 gold necklace and a Lockit bracelit in pink gold as her dressing.

Since 1998, Louis Vuitton has instilled its nomadic nature into its collection of City Guides by proposing a selection that is as specialized as it is individual. With a growing catalog of 30 cities in print and digital formats, the collection has establish itself as indispensable companions for the discerning traveler. This year, the Paris edition has been enriched with new addresses, following the updates of the Beijing, Lisbon, London, Moscow, New York, San Francisco, Seoul, Singapore and Tokyo guides. Architect and interior decorator François-Joseph Graf invites us to rediscover Paris, actress and singer Sophie Auster accompanies us throughout New York, and architects Alexei Ginzburg and Kengo Kuma share their visions of Moscow and Tokyo, respectively.

Louis Vuitton The Essentials
When Louis Vuitton arrived in Paris, he took advantage of family connections and learned the ropes of his trade. An eager and observant apprentice, he progressively honed his skills and savoir-faire to expand his company’s product lines.
A VOCATION IS BORN
Louis Vuitton was only in his early teens when he left his native village around 1835 to start a two-year journey to the French capital. As Gaston-Louis Vuitton recounts, Louis left because he did not get along with his stepmother.
There is no written documentation of what was his life was like during that time, or of his exact route, until he arrived in Paris in 1837. According to various sources, he took a string of day jobs to be able to obtain food and shelter: day labourer, stable boy, chef’s assistant and even lumberjack. Those two years of travel forged his character, as life on the roads of France was difficult. Louis became increasingly determined to make his way to Paris. There he joined his cousins Laurent, Constant and Frédéric, some of whom worked as packers.
Louis was “placed” in a context in which his family already operated, one that gave him the opportunity to work with wood. He began an apprenticeship with Romain Maréchal, a “ layetier-coffretier-emballeur ” (box-maker/cabinet-maker/packer) from the Faubourg Saint-Honoré district. His work entailed building crates as well as carefully packing customers’ effects inside. After three years as an apprentice, Louis was promoted to the position of ouvrier [workman] in 1840.
Romain Maréchal’s workshop and store were strategically located at the corner of rue du 29 Juillet and rue Saint-Honoré, in Paris’s first arrondissement, next to the Tuileries Palace the home of Emperor Napoleon III and his wife, Empress Eugénie.
The nearness to the Tuileries was ideal. The Empress travelled regularly between her various holiday spots and enlisted the services of the local packers.

The other advantage to the Saint Honoré district was its quantity of drapers’ shops, the predecessors to department stores. Their customers could go directly to neighbouring box-maker/packers to have their new finery packed.
Maréchal made the most of this location and forged his savoir-faire around this service specialisation. Louis would carry on this vocational legacy in founding his company in 1854.
EVER-EVOLVING SAVOIR-FAIRE
The economic and social upheavals of the 19 th century were in part responsible for the evolution of Louis’s profession. These changes prompted him to adjust the advertising and market position he chose for the Maison.
When with Romain Maréchal, Louis Vuitton was trained in the trade of layetier-coffretier-emballeur, a box-maker/cabinet-maker/packer).
BOX-MAKER – PACKER
In the 18 th century, the job of the layetier – box-maker – entailed making all kinds of boxes and, more particularly, “boxes in which one can securely enclose the effects one wishes to transport safely from one province to another.” In the 19 th century, it came to mean the manufacture and sale of travel cases. The origin of the French word layetier comes from the French layette or laie , meaning, until the 18 th century, a small chest or drawer used to store linen, jewellery or documents. In the 19 th century, the packer was the person who came to customers’ homes and filled trunks, crates, boxes.
In the 19 th century, however, a shift took place between the two trades, as fashion historian Denis Bruna explains in his article “Layetier-Coffretier-Emballeur: the sources of a specialized knowledge”. His findings are based on two manuals from the 1830s that clearly link the profession of layetier – box-maker – to that of emballeur – packer.
In 1888, the Almanach-Bottin du commerce de Paris confirms this evolution: the addresses of layetiers-coffretiers-emballeurs were all listed under the “Packer” heading of “ Emballeur ”.
When he struck out on his own in 1854, Louis kept only the term emballeur – packer – on his invoices and trunk labels.
Initially, Louis’s trade was packing goods for travel and preparing transport crates which he had made by suppliers. On the header of a letter from 1859, the name “Louis Vuitton” is followed by the words “ Emballage général Douane Exportation ”, suggesting that the company also handled the documentation related to goods transport.
Louis soon found the quality of the supplied transport crates unsatisfactory and decided to manufacture them himself, opening a workshop on rue du Rocher in 1858 to do so.
A year later, Louis established his workshops in Asnières-sur-Seine solely for manufacturing trunks.
Louis kept the term emballeur – packer – on his labels and invoice headers for several decades, and his descendants would continue to include the term. Both Gaston-Louis Vuitton and Patrick-Louis Vuitton characterised themselves as emballeurs .
Manufacturer of travel goods
The packer expertise that Louis acquired from Monsieur Maréchal would later inspire him when he began his work manufacturing travel goods. His knowledge of wood meant he made the best use of specific species: poplar made the barrel lighter and beech strengthened the slats.
Louis addressed the challenges of the day by inventing a trunk that was both lightweight and sturdy, for a too-heavy trunk increases transport costs and one that is too fragile can be damaged during the journey. His ability to imagine and install the most diverse interior fittings based on the customer’s needs helped set him apart from his competitors.
Opening the Asnières workshop dedicated to making trunks and the expansion and development of various forms of transport led Louis to use a new vocabulary in describing his business: that of manufacturer of travel goods. This what Louis listed as his profession on the death certificate of his daughter, Émilie-Élisabeth, in 1879.
The concept of travel goods appeared quite early on documents the Maison produced. An 1860 trunk label bears both the words “Louis Vuitton Emballeur” and “ Fabrique et magasins d’articles de voyage ” to indicate the manufacture and retail sale of travel articles. This combination of terminology appears later, as well, on labels from the 1870s and 1880s.
At the various world’s fairs and maritime exhibitions in which Louis took part, the Maison was listed in the sections dedicated to travel articles.
TRUNK-MAKER
Over the course of his career, Louis never used the term “ malletier ” (trunk-maker) to describe his trade, despite the fact that this vocation did exist in his day. According to the Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers , a venerable reference tome on arts, sciences and trades, a malletier is a person who “makes and sells army footlockers, trunks, valises, suitcases.” The trade was often associated with those of coffretier (cabinet-maker) and bahutier (chest-maker).
The Maison’s affiliation with the trade of trunk-maker came later: on a 1922 label, Maison Louis Vuitton is presented as a “ malletier coffretier ”, illustrated by a plate from the Encyclopédie .
Leather craftsman
In the late 19 th century, the expansion of automobile and train travel led Louis to rethink the size and shape of his luggage models, as well as the materials used to make them. As clothing stored in trunks remained inaccessible during the voyage, the Maison began developing a smaller, lighter type of luggage designed to hold the traveller’s essentials.
These travel bags would not be made with wood; instead, leather was seen as the best choice for this type of article, being flexible, lightweight and sturdy. In 1880, a leather goods department was created at the Asnières workshops to meet these new needs.
Leather was used for a variety of bags, from travel bags to ladies’ bags to hard-sided luggage.
By allowing and even pushing his trade to evolve, Louis Vuitton made it possible for his company to expand and diversify, laying the foundations for a Maison that would become celebrated for the quality of its travel articles.

At the end of the visit, the Music Room in Ivan Morozov’s Moscow mansion is presented outside the State Hermitage Museum as part of a special exhibition design and installation that marks the ending of the presentation of the Morozov works. Consisting of a monumental decorative installation of seven panels commissioned by Ivan Morozov in 1907 from Maurice Denis on the subject of The Story of Psyche (1908-1909), and of four sculptures by Aristide Maillol, the Music Room provides a rare window into the life of the prominent collector.

2) A l'étranger : Michaël Borremans, Pop Art, Arte povera, Michelange...
