Lost Voyage is a 2000 movie that follows the dramatic and suspenseful story of a venture capitalist named David Shaw, his wife and a team of divers who set sail on a yacht for a treasure-hunting expedition in the Caribbean. The lead role of David Shaw is played by Judd Nelson, while Janet Gunn stars as Anne Shaw, his wife, and Jeff Kober portrays the role of the yacht captain, Michael. Other notable actors in the movie include Lance Henriksen, Marco St. John, and Richard Gunn.

The movie begins with David Shaw, who is a wealthy businessman, deciding to take his wife, Anne, on a romantic cruise on his yacht, the Lady Luck. The couple is joined by a team of experienced divers, which includes the captain of the yacht, Michael. The team has a mission to search for a sunken ship, the Lorelei, which was lost in the Caribbean Sea over a hundred years ago. The ship carries a treasure of valuable artifacts that could fetch the team millions of dollars once recovered.

The voyage starts off well, with the team embarking on the oceanic journey and experiencing smooth sailing. However, things start taking a dark turn when they come across a massive storm, which causes the yacht to crash into a reef just a few miles from their destination. The whole team is thrown overboard and gets separated. When the Shaw's come back on the yacht, they realize that they are alone and stranded in the middle of the ocean, with no means of communication with the outside world.

As they try to figure out their next move, they realize that things aren't as straightforward as they seem. Firstly, they start experiencing strange occurrences and supernatural phenomena that seem to suggest that the ghost ship, Lorelei, may still exist. Secondly, they begin to feel the presence of a mysterious force that may be responsible for their predicament. They soon discover that they have been sucked into a vortex that has transported them back in time to the year 1865 when the ship sank.

The rest of the movie is a thrilling ride, as the team tries to survive the challenges of the past, fight off danger, and locate the missing treasure. They face a series of terrifying situations that test their physical and emotional strength. They come across phantom ships, supernatural creatures, and vengeful spirits that try to prevent them from achieving their objective.

One of the highlights of the movie is the intricately designed and realistic underwater scenes. These scenes provide a glimpse into the depths of the ocean and how treacherous and unpredictable it can be. The movie also has a haunting and eerie soundtrack, which adds to the overall atmosphere of the movie.

Lost Voyage is a gripping and suspenseful movie that keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat. The movie's storyline is well thought out and is an impressive blend of adventure, horror, and time-travel. The characters' performances are excellent, with Judd Nelson's portrayal of David Shaw being particularly noteworthy. Overall, the movie is a must-watch for anyone who is a fan of adventurous and suspenseful movies.

Lost Voyage is a 2002 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 35 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.6.

Meta Quest software update adds a better way to watch Netflix and a travel mode

The company tuned the algorithm to account for airplane jostling..

Meta’s rolling out a small spring/summer update for the Quest 2 and Quest 3 headsets. There’s nothing too major here, but there are some small improvements for regular users.

The biggest news is a new and better way to watch Netflix content. There’s long been a standalone Netflix app available for Quest headsets, but it maxes out at 480p and is generally considered to be, well, crappy. Once updated, you’ll be able to watch Netflix directly from the built-in browser. This offers a much-improved experience, with the option to view content in high resolution.

This browser-based version of Netflix isn’t just for better-looking content. The web app also offers the choice between a flat 2D virtual screen and a simulated theater view. Fake movie theaters are one of the best parts about VR , so this is welcome news.

Meta announced a dedicated travel mode a few weeks back, but the update brings it to everyone. This is a system mode primarily for air travel, as it tunes the headset’s algorithms to adjust for airplane jostling. The headset will automatically connect to in-flight Wi-Fi and will be available to play anything stored on the device, in addition to movies and TV shows offered by the airline.

The company has entered into a partnership with Lufthansa to offer Quest 3 headsets to people on select business class flights. Of course, you’ll have to be comfortable wearing a giant thing on your face while surrounded by strangers, but you do you.

The rest of the update pertains to existing apps. Beat Saber is getting five free new tracks and the fitness app Supernatural is getting a mixed-reality mode, but only on Quest 3 (for obvious reasons.) Meta has also announced that another trailer for the Quest 3 exclusive Batman: Arkham Shadow will drop on June 7 as part of Summer Game Fest.

Billionaire explains why he's planning voyage to Titanic site nearly year after submersible implosion

Entrepreneur Larry Connor said he wants to show certified submersibles are safe.

Nearly a year after five people died aboard the OceanGate "Titan" submersible while on a deep-sea voyage to the site of the Titanic, a billionaire has announced plans to go to the infamous wreck.

Entrepreneur and real estate investor Larry Connor said this week that he and Triton Submarines CEO Patrick Lahey are planning their own deep-sea expedition in a submersible.

PHOTO: Larry Connor speaks with "Good Morning America."

Asked why, Connor told "Good Morning America" correspondent Will Reeve that the purpose of the voyage is to "demonstrate safety" of certified submersibles.

"If you look at submersibles that have been DNV certified ... there's never been an accident," he said. "The OceanGate vessel was not certified and never would have been."

While on a tour of the Titanic wreckage off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, in June 2023, the OceanGate submersible imploded underwater, killing all five people on board, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush. Following a dayslong search, the remnants of the missing submersible were found on the ocean floor about 1,600 feet from the bow of the wrecked Titanic.

Experts called the carbon fiber construction of the Titan fundamentally flawed and a whistleblower who worked on a predecessor to the Titan vessel raised concerns about the inefficiency of the hull design. Rush had previously defended the decision to manufacture the submersible with carbon fiber, saying he believed it would have a better strength-to-buoyancy ratio than titanium. The exact cause of the implosion remains under investigation by federal authorities.

Connor said he and Lahey are designing a new, safer and certified submersible, known as the Explorer, that could take two people to the Titanic site. The submersible will cost $13 million to $15 million and have an acrylic hull and offer a near-panoramic view.

Connor said he is "very confident" about the plan and would not do a dive if he was not "100% convinced" that the submersible was safe.

"The moment we don't meet one standard, the project is done," he said. "We will not compromise safety."

PHOTO: RMS The bow of the Titanic is seen in the Atlantic Ocean, north of Newfoundland in 1996.

In addition to proving safety, he said continued deep-sea dives carry scientific benefits.

"Almost three-quarters of the earth is covered in water. Isn't doing research important and worthwhile, given that fact?" he said.

MORE: Why Titanic continues to captivate more than 100 years after its sinking

Hakeem Oluseyi, a physicist and ABC News contributor, said he doesn't think deep-sea submersibles "should be abandoned for a single accident."

"If you think about the early days of space travel, we lost an entire crew," he said. "But that tells us what we've done wrong in the past and how to get it right in the future."

Fans can revisit the mysteries of Lost by binge-watching the series at its new streaming home. Currently available on Hulu, the show's switch to Netflix will be happening at the start of next month.

On X , Netflix touted the upcoming arrival of Lost on the streaming platform. Posted was an image from the series along with the line of dialogue, " We have to go back ." The streamer noted, " Every episode of Lost is coming to Netflix in the US on JULY 1 ."

The 30 Best Drama TV Shows of All Time, Ranked

TV dramas have been an entertainment mainstay for decades, with series like Game of Thrones and The Sopranos setting a universal standard.

Lost was created by Jeffrey Lieber, J. J. Abrams, and Damon Lindelof. The series follows the survivors of an airplane crash on a mysterious island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, where they are met with supernatural occurrences as they attempt to uncover the mystery of their new home. The series was a big success, winning an Emmy among several other awards and garnering very high viewership and acclaim. The show ran for six seasons between 2004 and 2010 before wrapping up.

The series boasted a large ensemble cast that included names like Naveen Andrews, Emile de Ravin, Matthew Fox, Jorge Garcia, Maggie Grace, Josh Holloway, Malcolm David Kelley, Yunjin Kim, Terry O'Quinn, Harold Perrineau, Ken Leung, Ian Somerhalder, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. Actor Daniel Dae Kim was also featured, and he spoke about the possibility of revisiting Lost if a revival series were to be made anytime soon.

HBO Gave Fans One of the Most Accurate Crime Dramas of All Time

Police procedurals are a staple in many households, but few are more honest about the dark side of police work than HBO's The Wire

"That's not up to me," he told Screen Rant . "It depends on the creators and their vision, because that's what Lost was always based on. And if they come calling, I'll pick up the phone."

Damon Lindelof Would Not Want to Return

However, Lindelof has previously said how if Lost were to return, it would probably be with a new creative team. He said that the version of the series he worked on felt complete, and that he'd prefer to pass the baton to someone new rather than return to the series in any way.

"My feeling is that just like [how] Watchmen was someone else's story or Star Trek was someone else story, then you kind of pass the baton and things go on," he said in an Entertainment Tonight interview. "I, personally, am not going to be involved with other versions of Lost because we told the most complete version. I feel like I spent four years of my life begging them to end it and when they finally said yes, the ending that we did probably should stand as our ending."

Lost is one of several Disney-owned shows coming to Netflix as part of a new streaming deal. Along with Lost some of the other popular shows that are heading to Netflix include How I Met Your Mother , Archer , Prison Break , White Collar , Home Improvement , and Grey's Anatomy .

Lost is currently streaming on Hulu and will become available on Netflix on July 1, 2024.

Why row from Boston to London? Because it’s there.

Spaulding Rehabilitation physician, team taking new route, aim to set records

Samantha Laine Perfas

Harvard Staff Writer

John Lowry, a physician at Harvard-affiliated Spaulding Rehabilitation at Mass General Brigham, recently set off on an attempt to row across the North Atlantic on a route that begins in Boston and has never been tried before. He and his crew are doing so to raise funds for various charities, and hopefully to break some records. Lowry, who is also an instructor at Harvard Medical School, spoke with the Gazette about the upcoming quest and shared why it’s always a good idea to push yourself to do hard things. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Has anyone rowed across the Atlantic Ocean before?

The whole endeavor of ocean rowing got its start back in the 1960s. Two individuals crossed the North Atlantic in opposite directions and became the first people to cross the Atlantic solo. They both finished relatively close to the Apollo 11 moon landing, so it kind of got lost in the news.

But since then there have been subsequent trips taken across, although it was still viewed as a fringe sport, not really sponsored by anybody, just people who were interested in adventure. Everything was sort of DIY.

In the last 20 years, it has become more of an established — probably still fringe — sport. But the technology has improved tremendously. The boats are purpose-built for ocean rowing. They’re more seaworthy, lighter, more durable, and also able to carry modern electronics aboard, including for communication and GPS. Navigation has made this more accessible to broader participation.

In the Atlantic, the primary route is off the coast of Africa to the Canary Islands to Barbados to the Caribbean. It’s part of a larger race series that takes place, usually December into January. And every year a couple of hundred people go. It’s a well-supported, sponsored, sanctioned event. The South Atlantic is warmer, and it’s a bit calmer than the North Atlantic.

Tell us about what makes your trip unique.

What we’re doing is unsanctioned. We’re going as an independent team, not under the auspices of a larger race or organization. There are four of us. I’ve known Capt. Bryan Fuller since we were about 5 years old. And he did the  Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge  in the South Atlantic about 12 years ago. Before the pandemic, he hatched the idea of doing the North Atlantic journey — going west to east — but the pandemic locked things down. There were shifts in the original crew, and I joined the effort about a year ago. We’re also joined by champion rower Elizabeth Gilmore and Klara Anstey, a rower from Wales.

If we’re successful, we’ll be the first human-powered crossing from Boston to the U.K. [Past North Atlantic crossings began in New York.] We will also be the first mixed crew (in terms of gender) ever to cross the North Atlantic. We’re hoping to break the North Atlantic record for speed.

How long do you expect it to take?

We leave on June 1 and hope to reach the Isles of Scilly — which are the first U.K. territory we’ll encounter, just south of Cornwall — in or under 42 days. From there, we stop the clock. Then we proceed up the English Channel and up the Thames to downtown London. We expect that will take us another week or so. Technically, it will be the most difficult part of our row because the currents and tides in the English Channel will make it especially arduous.

Logistically, how do you manage rowing as a four-person crew for that long?

We’ll be on a seagoing schedule, meaning that there will be watch time — where we’re also rowing — and time off watch. The shifts will be anywhere from one to four hours, with the average shift length being two hours of rowing, two hours off. At night, in the interest of getting a bit more sleep, we’ll be on for four hours and off for four hours. But the boat will be rowed 24 hours a day.

How big is the boat?

The boat itself is 28 feet long and not quite 5½ feet wide. There are compartments in the bow and the stern. We’ll be hot bunking, so if one person is rowing the other can have the compartment. That being said, at 5’ 10”, I still have to pretty much be in the fetal position to be able to get in and sleep. There is room for two people in each compartment if conditions become rough or unsafe and we must take refuge.

What will you do for meals?

Each of us — for the length of the trip — is budgeted 180 freeze-dried meals, just like you would buy at REI. We’ll have a jet boil to boil water. You add it; wait 10 minutes; and then have a meal for which hunger increases your appreciation.

We’ll probably be consuming up to 4,000 calories a day, but we’ll be burning through close to twice that. We’ll all be losing quite a bit of weight as we go across, so right now we’re all trying to gain as much as we can. Probably the last time in my life I’ll have that luxury.

You recently went on a 24-hour test row. How did that go?

We rowed out of Boston on a Saturday, went north about as far as Marblehead, and turned around. But it was an opportunity for us to test the two-on-two-off schedule and to get a feeling for navigating, especially at night. It went well. I think we gelled as a crew, and it was important to learn how the boat handled.

But I think equally if not more important is to know how we work together as a team, to maintain safety and have a good flow. If somebody is walking down the deck from one end to the other, they can’t just do that because it would tip the boat over. There must be a really tight, cohesive coordination. I think that trip gave us a lot of confidence.

Why did you decide to participate in this endeavor?

Personally, I thrive when I’m challenged. Professionally, I take care of persons who have various disabilities. And one thing that society often does, intentionally or inadvertently, is deny people with disabilities the opportunity to dare to do new things, to take new risks in life.

For example, for a wheelchair user, that might mean buying an airplane ticket, figuring out how to travel by air, how to access a hotel transportation. It’s daunting, and for some people, it’s way more daunting than rowing across an ocean.

So I’m doing this to bring awareness to the idea that as physicians, it’s a good and healthy thing to help your patients stretch themselves a little bit and to problem-solve ways of pulling things off. And if things don’t work out, understand that “failure” is an opportunity to learn what did not go right and to rectify that.

What will the funds you raise support, beyond the trip itself?

I’m  supporting the Spaulding Adaptive Sports Centers [a part of Spaulding Rehabilitation],  whose mission is very closely tied to taking individuals who’ve had various injuries or impairments and putting them in an environment where they may be a little bit uncomfortable and enabling them to succeed. And not only to succeed but have fun doing it.

We want to engender the skills and the confidence that transfer into their larger life, to live fuller, more complete lives. The funds will help support the Spaulding networks and the adaptive sports program to help people access equipment and programming.

There’s quite a bit of risk associated with this trip. Why is it worth it, to you and the team?

As they say, without risk there is no reward. I can’t wait to meet the person I am when I come back. I think I will have a deeper appreciation for just about everything. And the only way to achieve that is by assuming that risk.

I have college students who tell me they are thinking about medical school. And I tell them the last thing you should ever do is try to talk somebody into becoming a doctor. If you can’t talk them out of becoming a doctor, it’s probably the right choice. And for me, the decision to take this trip was very similar.

I think my other motive in doing this trip is for professionals, particularly healthcare providers and physicians, we get really caught up in the day-to-day routine of what we do. It can be all-consuming, almost to the exclusion of the rest of our lives. And who hasn’t gazed out the window and wondered about that big trip or that project that they wanted to do, but have almost immediately dismissed the idea because they thought it impractical.

I want to challenge that assumption. With careful planning, patience, and commitment, it actually is possible to pull off a big project. And it can be a positive force in one’s career trajectory.

If people want to follow your voyage, is there a way to do so?

Our website is  londoncallingrow.com . Through the website, there will be a link to our dot tracker that will tell you down to about a meter of resolution where we are on the ocean. We also will have Starlink access onboard, so we’ll be able to upload posts and hopefully some photos and video to keep people apprised of our progress.

All 121 Lost Episodes Get Streaming Release Date On Netflix

  • Get ready to relive the mysterious island adventures of Lost on Netflix US starting July 1.
  • All six seasons of the divisive sci-fi series will be available for subscribers to binge-watch.
  • Prepare for the frustration and excitement as the crash-landed survivors' story unfolds.

Netflix is getting Lost , announcing the release date for all six seasons and 121 episodes of ABC's famously divisive sci-fi/mystery series. The last episode aired way back in 2010, and the debate rages on as to what really happened to the survivors of doomed Oceanic Airlines Flight 815. That fans still seek answers to so many lingering Lost mysteries is testament to how compelling it often was, but also points to the problems with later seasons, which left far too many unresolved questions dangling in the air.

Netflix subscribers can now go back to the beginning of Lost and watch all the way through again, sifting for more clues about the show's juciest mysteries, as the streamer reveals that all 121 episodes will crash-land there on July 1, 2024.

Which Lost Season Is The Best?

Lost started with a bang back in 2004, with a pilot episode that was at the time the most expensive ever produced, and remains one of the best series-launching installments of all-time. Season 2 was, if anything, even stronger in the eyes of critics, as the show gained momentum in unveiling its intricate box of mysteries.

Things began to go sour in Lost season 3 , however, as the show’s gimmicks began to wear thin, and the story began feeling like it was just spinning its wheels with no end in sight. Things improved in season 4 and even more in season 5, as the story began to gel again, thanks in part to showrunners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse demanding that ABC give them a definite end-point to aim for.

Lost aired its final episode on May 23, 2010

Lost might have indeed ended as one of the most satisfying shows ever, had Lindelof and Cuse actually stuck the landing on season 6, but the final run of episodes was mostly uneven, as writers tried desperately to tie up as many of show’s convoluted storylines as possible. Lost may ultimately have left viewers feeling as much frustration as love, but among its 121 episodes, there are many gems to enjoy. Netflix will now give viewers a chance to relive all the divisive feelings conjured up by Lost over the course of its six seasons.

Donald Trump found guilty of all 34 charges in hush money trial

By CNN's Kara Scannell, Lauren Del Valle and Jeremy Herb in the courthouse

Our live coverage has ended. Follow  the latest news on Donald Trump's guilty verdict or read through the updates below.

Stormy Daniels' attorney says she was "really emotional" after verdict

From CNN's Kaanita Iyer

Stormy Daniels' attorney Clark Brewster said his client was "really emotional" following former President Donald Trump's guilty verdict in the hush money case.

He told CNN's Kaitlan Collins that Daniels faced the "realization of the finality" and had "a lot of emotions flowing."

Brewster also responded to Trump attorney Todd Blanche saying he'd raise Daniels' testimony in appeal, arguing that "it was straightforward" and "they had an opportunity to cross examine her."

Stormy Daniels' friend said "it's a joyous day" after Trump's guilty verdict

From CNN's Piper Hudspeth Blackburn

Alana Evans, right, speaks with CNN's Abby Phillip on May 30.

Alana Evans, friend of Stormy Daniels and an adult film star told CNN’s Abby Phillip that she — and Daniels — absolutely feels vindicated by Trump’s guilty verdict, calling it a “joyous day.”

"We were deemed credible, and it's heartwarming in that way because so many people judge us for who we are — our backgrounds — it's something that's thrown in our faces again and again ... it isn't a reflection of who we are as people," Evans said. Evans added that she's "really happy simply because it meant that at the end of the day, it really is a adult film star who is stepping forward and being the person to put that man to the truth."

Here's what happens now that Trump has been convicted in his hush money criminal case

From CNN's Devan Cole

Former President Donald Trump leaves the Manhattan Criminal Court in New York after a jury found him guilty of all 34 felony counts in his hush money trial on Thursday, May 30.

A New York jury  convicting Donald Trump  on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records brought the former president’s weekslong trial to a close but ushered in a new phase of the historic case.

Now in the unique position of being the first former US president convicted of a felony, Trump faces the possibility of a prison sentence or probation for his crimes stemming from a hush money payment scheme he helped facilitate ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

Trump – who is known for mounting lengthy appeals of court rulings against him – has said he will appeal the conviction, which can be done after he is sentenced.

Here’s what to know about the case following Trump’s conviction:

When will Trump be sentenced?

Judge Juan Merchan has set Trump’s sentencing for 10 a.m. ET on July 11. For now, the former president will remain out of prison as he awaits his sentencing. Prosecutors did not ask for Trump to post any bond.

Can Trump appeal his conviction?

Shortly after Trump was convicted, his attorney Todd Blanche asked Merchan for an acquittal of the charges notwithstanding the guilty verdict. The judge rejected the pro forma request.

Can Trump still be elected president?

Nothing in the US Constitution bars a convicted criminal from running for the nation’s highest office, University of California, Los Angeles law professor Richard L. Hasen has consistently said.

“The Constitution contains only limited qualifications for running for office (being at least 35 years old, a natural born citizen, and at least 14 years a resident of the U.S.),” Hasen continued.

Will the conviction cost Trump his right to vote?

Trump is a Florida resident. When it comes to the Manhattan guilty verdict just rendered,  Trump’s right to vote in Florida  in November’s election will depend on whether he is sentenced to a term in prison and if he has finished serving that prison sentence by the time of the election.

Florida’s felon voting prohibitions apply to people with out-of-state convictions. However, if a Floridian’s conviction is out of state, Florida defers to that state’s laws for how felon can regain their voting rights.

Correction: This post has been updated to reflect when Trump is allowed to file an appeal.

In pictures: Trump convicted in hush money case

For the first time in history, a former US president has been convicted of a felony.

A jury on Thursday found Donald Trump guilty  on 34 charges of falsifying business records. Prosecutors alleged that the former president engaged in a cover-up scheme to hide reimbursement payments made to his former attorney, Michael Cohen, who had paid hush money to adult film star Stormy Daniels to stop her from going public about a past affair with Trump before the 2016 presidential election. Trump has denied the affair.

Trump is facing 3 other criminal cases while running again for president

From CNN’s Devan Cole, Amy O'Kruk and Curt Merrill

Former President Donald Trump appears in Manhattan Criminal Court, Thursday, May 30, in New York.

The hush money criminal case against former President Donald Trump was only one of  four criminal cases  he is juggling while running again for president.

The former president still faces criminal indictments in Georgia, Washington, DC, and Florida. Trump has pleaded not guilty to every charge in these cases.

Here's a recap of each case:

  • Hush money:  Trump was first indicted in March 2023 by the Manhattan district attorney on state charges related to a hush-money payment to an adult film star in 2016. Prosecutors alleged Trump was part of an illegal conspiracy to  undermine  the integrity of the 2016 election. Further, they alleged he was part of an unlawful plan to suppress negative information, including the $130,000 payment. He was found guilty of all 34 counts on Thursday.
  • Classified documents:  Trump was indicted in June 2023 by a federal grand jury in Miami for taking classified national defense documents from the White House after he left office and resisting the government’s attempts to retrieve the materials. The National Archives said in early 2022 that at least 15 boxes of White House records were recovered from the estate, including  some that were classified . The charges were brought by special counsel Jack Smith. However,  Judge Aileen Cannon  has  indefinitely postponed the trial , citing significant issues around classified evidence that would need to be worked out before the federal criminal case goes to a jury.
  • Federal election interference:  Smith separately charged the former president last August with four crimes over his efforts to reverse the 2020 election results. The indictment alleges Trump and a co-conspirator "attempted to exploit the violence and chaos at the Capitol by calling lawmakers to convince them ... to delay the certification" of the election. That case is currently on hold  as the Supreme Court  weighs Trump’s claims of presidential immunity in the matter.
  • Fulton County:  State prosecutors in Georgia brought a similar election subversion case against Trump and others. An Atlanta-based grand jury on August 14, 2023, indicted Trump and 18 others on state charges stemming from their alleged efforts to overturn the former president’s 2020 electoral defeat. A trial date has not yet been set in that case.

Melania Trump is in New York City, source says

From CNN's Kristen Holmes

Former first lady Melania Trump and her son, Barron Trump, are currently in New York, a source familiar with the matter told CNN. The two were already in New York when the verdict was read earlier Thursday, although it was not immediately clear when they arrived in the city.

Melania Trump did not attend a fundraiser dinner with Trump at a private residence Thursday night in New York City.

She was not seen at court during the trial.

Schumer says “no one is above the law” after Trump verdict

From CNN's Morgan Rimmer

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer posted a brief statement about the verdict in former President Donald Trump's hush money trial on social media.

"No one is above the law. The verdict speaks for itself," the New York Democrat said.

Trump attorney Todd Blanche outlines appeal arguments

Todd Blanche appears on CNN after a Manhattan jury found his client, Donald Trump, guilty of falsifying business records on Thursday, May 30

Donald Trump's attorney Todd Blanche told CNN's Kaitlan Collins Thursday that the former president's legal team plans to argue in its appeal of the verdict that the jury was biased against Trump and the timing of the trial was unfair.

"Every single person on the jury knew Donald Trump as president, as candidate, from 'The Apprentice' so I don't accept that this was a fair place to try President Trump," Blanche said.

He added: "There was so much publicity around the witnesses and around – leading up to the trial that our system of justice isn't supposed to be a system where every person who walks into the courtroom knows about the case."

"The law says a person is entitled to a fair trial in front of a jury of their peers and we just think that because of everything around the lead up this trial, it made it very difficult for the jury to evaluate the evidence kind of independent of what they knew coming in," Blanche said.

Blanche previewed that Trump's legal team will now "vigorously fight" with motions due in a few weeks. And "if that is not successful," the attorney said they will appeal following the sentencing in July.

The lost continent of Zealandia has been mapped for the first time

This enormous chunk of submerged continental crust sits between Antarctica and Australia, where it connected the landmasses as part of a supercontinent some 300 million years ago.

After years of exploration and research, scientists have finished mapping a sunken continent that lurks beneath the South Pacific. This chunk of continental crust, driven to the depths millions of years ago, is known as Zealandia, or by the Indigenous Māori name Te Riu-a-Māui.

By piecing together rock samples with magnetic maps, geologists have revealed the extent of Zealandia, hidden below the ocean surrounding New Zealand. Seven years ago, geologist Nick Mortimer and colleagues revealed the existence of this mostly submerged continent, and in 2021 they mapped the southern portion .

Now in a study published in Tectonics , the scientists have finished mapping this entire continent—all 1.9 million square miles. “We’ve put Zealandia on the map,” says Mortimer, who works for the New Zealand research institution GNS Science.

This new study “shows that New Zealand isn't just a couple of islands,” says geologist James Scott of the University of Otago in New Zealand, who wasn’t involved in the research. “It’s actually an enormous continent that’s almost half the size of Australia—just mostly underwater.”

Zealandia is a missing piece of the continental crust, says geoscientist Maria Seton of the University of Sydney. It fits like a puzzle piece among the other nearby continents of Antarctica and Australia, allowing geologists to study how Zealandia formed and split from nearby landmasses in geological history.

Now that scientists have charted the boundaries of this hidden chunk of Earth’s crust, they can begin to reveal how and why it formed in the first place—questions that have implications far beyond the continent’s borders.

For Hungry Minds

Rocks from below.

During a video call, Mortimer holds up a fist-size, splotchy, gray rock—a granite pulled from the team’s 2016 voyage to the northern portion of Zealandia. During the expedition to a site called Fairway Ridge aboard the Australian ship the   R/V Investigator , the researchers dredged up hundreds of kilograms of granite and sedimentary samples from the submarine continent.

Such chunks of granite, explains Mortimer, are crushed, sieved, and the remains put into heavy liquids that allow some of the bits to float and others to sink. The bits that sink are then run through a magnet to separate the non-magnetic minerals the researchers are after. The scientists then look at the remaining material under a microscope and pick out—by hand—the zircon crystals.

These are the minerals they’re looking for, because locked within their crystalline structure is a geologic clock. By comparing those crystals with well-studied rocks from New Zealand, says Mortimer, scientists can learn which landmasses formed together. With enough samples, those tiny crystals—each about one-third of a millimeter long—can be used to outline Zealandia’s geology.

The zircons formed when volcanic magma cooled and solidified. Their chemical composition includes uranium, which is a radioactive element, says Rose Turnbull , a geoscientist at GNS Science and co-author of the new study.

“As soon as it’s crystallized, the uranium starts decaying,” says Turnbull. Uranium atoms convert into lead over time, and by measuring the ratio of the two atoms in the zircons, the scientists can determine how long ago they formed.

The magma in the Zealandia granites tended to date to around 100 million years ago—a time that aligns with the breakup of the previous supercontinent.

A huge volcano near Naples has been convulsing. What does it mean?

Connecting the dots.

Imagine poking holes in a cloth and throwing it over a statue. The holes would reveal bits of information about the statue, similar to the samples taken of Zealandia, but they could only tell you so much.

“When we go out on the ships and we collect our samples, they’re pinpricks,” says Seton. “We need to use other methods to try and connect the dots.”

To get a more complete picture, the team used magnetic mapping. With sensors aboard ships, orbiting in space, and stationed on land, researchers can detect magnetic field anomalies. Mortimer and his colleagues looked for the highly magnetic rocks, which tended to be basalts that had solidified from past volcanic activity, and then created maps of these magnetic variations.

Just as the fabric over the statue would give you a general sense of the shape, these magnetic maps provided a sense of Zealandia.

The scientists quickly noticed these magnetic rocks from preciously volcanic regions weren’t randomly arranged, says Mortimer. Instead, they were either parallel or perpendicular to fracture zones deep in the oceanic crust, locations where the continents moved apart.

Those regions, he says, “appear to be related to the stretching of the [supercontinent] Gondwana crust, just before Zealandia and Antarctica and Australia broke up.”

The continental puzzle

Researchers have learned over the decades that Earth’s continental crust evolves over vast timescales. It follows a general cycle: The land mass is compacted as a supercontinent, then that supercontinent breaks apart into several smaller continents, then the land coalesces together again, and the cycle continues over hundreds of millions of years. Some 250 million years from now, scientists believe, the continents will have merged together again .

Around 300 to 250 million years ago, the supercontinent was Pangea, made up of two smaller parts: the southern chunk, Gondwana, and the northern piece, Laurasia. By 200 million years ago, each of those chunks began moving away from each other.

“When they’re splitting up, what happens is you get new plate boundaries forming, and you get two pieces of continent pulling themselves apart, stretching the continental crust, making that thinner,” says Seton.

A rift within Gondwana where current-day Zealandia met Antarctica and Australia was pulling apart around 100 million years ago, unleashing a spur of volcanic activity. That heated the crust, which was stretched out “like pizza dough,” says Mortimer, until around 60 million years ago.

Then the area started to cool down, and what is now Zealandia became denser and sank into the ocean, almost totally submerged by about 25 million years ago, says Mortimer. Today, only five percent of the total continent pokes above water—the islands of New Zealand, New Caledonia, and a few islands of Australia.

The northern portion of Zealandia is still connected to Australia, while the southern portion is strongly attached to Antarctica. To learn more about these junctures, and the geological history they can reveal, will require more samples and additional analyses. The researchers, says Seton, have already dredged more than 50 samples during a 2019 investigation and are still combing through the data.

“If you look at [Zealandia] now, it’s kind of like a blurry photograph, and with more sampling, that becomes more clear,” says Scott. “Finally the picture is unraveled, but it still remains, you know, under a kilometer of water.”
