Learn more about Lesotho

Best time to visit lesotho.

There’s no bad time to visit Lesotho. October to April tends to be wetter, while winter (May to September) can be cold, dropping below freezing at night. The climate is mostly temperate all year round.

Geography and environment

Lesotho is completely surrounded by South Africa . Perched on the highest part of the Drakensburg escarpment, this mountainous kingdom is filled with valleys and peaks. The lowland areas, which still soar 3280 feet above sea level, are home to most of the population, while the Highlands are a magnet for adventurers looking to hike or pony trek between villages.

Top 5 mountain activities in Lesotho

Pull on your boots and head to the hills to explore Lesotho’s mountains. The views are spectacular and you’re more likely to encounter a waterfall or San Bushman rock art than another human being.

2. Meet the Basotho

Take a walk through Malealea Village and leave with a bevvy of new friends. Curious kids and friendly adults will proudly show you around and introduce you to their traditions.

3. Pony trekking

If you prefer four legs to two, then there’s nowhere better to get on a horse (or pony) and ride than Lesotho. Set out with a guide to explore the countryside on a short or overnight trek.

4. Explore canyons

Take a hike to the stunning Pitseng Canyon. Walk under overhanging cliff faces and past cascading rockpools where, if it’s warm enough, you can take a dip.

5. Wildlife spotting

Lesotho boasts some spectacular wildlife-spotting opportunities. Keep an eye out for rare birds, vultures, meerkats, jackals, mountain reedbuck and baboons.

Beautiful, culturally rich, affordable and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho (le-soo-too) is a vastly underrated travel destination. The contrast with South Africa could not be more striking, with the Basotho people's distinct personality and the altitudinous terrain's topographical extremes. Even a few days in Lesotho’s hospitable mountain lodges and trading posts will give you a fresh perspective on Southern Africa.

When is the best time of the year to visit?

green yellow and blue graph showing average rainfall temperature and daylight hours in Lesotho

Lesotho is a beautiful mountainous country that border South Africa, and is most famous for the Sani Pass border between the two countries. Owing to the large mountain regions Lesotho weather can be extremely changeable, and it is always recommended to pack lots of layers for any trip. At the top of the Sani Pass is not unusual throughout the year, and it can also be extremely windy. Lesotho is also home to Afriski - the only ski resort in Africa that is open June and July every year, so if it is the unique opportunity to ski in Africa that you are after then these are definitely the months to visit. Outside of skiing November to March is the best time to visit, despite higher rains, as it can be warmer at night. However, if the rains are particularly heavy some roads may not be passable.

Why Travel to Lesotho ? by Luke Hardiman

Lesotho, the only country in the world that lies entirely above 1000m, is a tiny mountain kingdom surrounded by South Africa. This landlocked country is roughly the same size as Belgium, covering 30 355 sq km’s.

Lesotho is dominated by the rugged mountains of the Maluti mountain range and is fittingly called the Kingdom in the Sky. Lesotho is famous for its pony trekking and hiking trails, the best ways to explore its scenic mountains. The country is also known for its friendly people and their distinct Basotho culture.

Lesotho Travel Highlights

Pony trekking in lesotho.

Lesotho is best known for its pony trekking on Basotho ponies, the main reason many travellers visit this scenic part of the world. A local guide accompanies visitors on pony trekking excursions going from village to village or into the picturesque mountains of Lesotho.

The Welcoming Basotho People

Encountering the warm and open Basotho people of Lesotho is one of the highlights of visiting this peaceful country. Traditionally the Basotho people wear straw hats and brightly coloured blankets to keep warm at such high altitudes. The Basotho men typically wear gumboots, many of them having worked as migrant mine labourers in South Africa. The people of Lesotho are predominantly rural and the unique Basotho culture is centred on the family unit and village. Traditional culture remains vibrant in the Basotho communities of this proud nation.

The Hiking Trails of Lesotho

A hiker’s paradise, Lesotho has an abundance of hiking trails and scenic walking paths to choose from. Hiking can be done with a local guide or you can explore the mountains independently. Hiking also offers excellent bird watching opportunities in Lesotho, known for its large raptor population, including the rare Bearded Vulture, the Steppe Buzzard, the Cape Vulture and the Black Eagle.

Lesotho Crafts Markets

The lively crafts markets of Lesotho are well worth a visit as Lesotho boasts a strong tradition in arts and crafts. Basotho women typically make hand-woven tapestries and carpets out of wool and mohair, along with a range of grass-woven products. The grass and reed woven items include baskets, brooms, floor mats and traditional Basotho hats, called mokorotlo, as well as beer strainers, to produce the local beer called joala. Other crafts include jewellery making and pottery and Lesotho is also known for its sheepskin clothing and leather products.

African Budget Safaris to Lesotho

African Budget Safaris offers a variety of Lesotho Safaris ranging in length from 3 days to 42 days. We have Accommodated and Camping Overland tours that visit Lesotho as part of a longer journey through Southern Africa taking in other highlights such as Kruger National Park in South Africa, Botswana’s Okavango delta, the Sossusvlei Dunes of Namibia and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. You can also choose from Exclusive Budget Safaris and Overland Safaris, either camping or accommodated that go to Lesotho as part of longer trips through South Africa and Swaziland. These Lesotho Safaris typically include South African travel highlights such as Kruger Park, Cape Town, the Garden Route, Zululand and the Drakensberg as well as Addo Elephant National Park and Tsitsikamma Park. There is also a shorter safari option that combines Lesotho with a Durban city tour in a 3-day accommodated trip.

The Lesotho Safari experience offers a delightful blend of cultural discovery and spectacular mountain scenery. The Lesotho Safaris usually include a visit to a Basotho village school or arts and crafts market in a local community, as well as the highlight of any trip to Lesotho – pony trekking in the hills with a local guide.

Lesotho Travel: All You Need to Know

Lesotho Travel: My Detailed Guide and Itinerary

Last Updated on October 19, 2020

Lesotho travel is sure to surprise you – whether it’s your first or 100th time in Africa. Here’s my Lesotho travel guide and itinerary to help you plan a trip to this Kingdom in the Sky.

lesotho travel guide and itinerary - all you need to know

Completely landlocked and surrounded by South Africa is the small African nation of Lesotho (pronounced ‘leh-soo-too’). The small African nation is culturally rich, stunning, affordable and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg.

Yet the contrast with South Africa could not be more striking, with the Basotho people’s distinct personality and the terrain’s topographical extremes. Even a few days in Lesotho’s hospitable mountain lodges and trading posts will give you a fresh perspective on Southern Africa.

Often dubbed “the Kingdom in the Sky”, Lesotho is a largely mountainous country with lofty altitude — it has the highest lowest point of any country in the world (1400m) and is the only country to be entirely above 1000m!  For those planning a trip to this intriguing mountain nation, here is a complete guide with the best things to do, where to stay and where to eat, as well as details of my four-day itinerary in Lesotho.

Where’s Lesotho?

History of lesotho, by car rental, when to travel to lesotho, how to get around lesotho, where to stay in lesotho, cost of travel in lesotho, day 1: drive into the maloti mountains, stay: maliba lodge, day 2: explore t’sehlanyane national park, day 3: drive to maseru, capital of lesotho, stay: greater heights b&b, day 4: head back to johannesburg, what did we miss, inspired pin it.

Located in southern Africa, Lesotho is completely landlocked by South Africa . It’s one of the smallest countries in Africa. With a land area of approximately 30, 555 square kilometres, it is similar in size to Belgium.

Many travelers make a flying visit to Lesotho on their way to Kwazulu Natal, but it’s well worth lingering at least five days or a week. You can easily combine a trip to South Africa with Lesotho (and Swaziland ), like what we did. We spent 16 days in total, driving from Johannesburg to Swaziland and then continue south into Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, and onto Lesotho, then back to Johannesburg.

lesotho travel guide and itinerary - map of lesotho

Originally, the Basotho people lived in what is now Free State in neighboring South Africa. They were a farming people, and when the Zulus started attacking villages and the Voortrekkers started encroaching on their land, they fled up into the Lesotho mountains. Here, continuous attacks from the Zulus forced local tribes to join together for protection.

By 1824, King Moeshoeshoe had established himself as king. Moeshoeshoe allied himself with the British Colony government. Much fighting followed, forcing Moeshoeshoe to go straight to the Britisih government. In 1868, Basotholand (as it was then called) became a protectorate of the British Empire. It was granted independence from the British Empire on October 4th, 1966.

The Kingdom of Lesotho was formed through the pursuit of peace, and this peaceful nature still exists in the Basotho. They have always been calm and stable. People are especially grateful to Brits for saving them from apartheid!

How to Travel to Lesotho

Traveling to Lesotho is surprisingly easy. Unlike many other African countries, Lesotho allows citizens of most countries (US, UK, Canada and Australia) to enter visa-free. Nationals of Singapore, Japan, Israel and most African countries do not need a visa to stay in Lesotho for up to 90 days. Citizens of EU countries can enter visa-free for up to 14 days. Those who need a visa for Lesotho can apply for an e-visa here.

The only International airport of Lesotho is the Moshoeshoe Airport, located 18km from Maseru. South African Airways and Airlink operate daily flights between Maseru and Johannesburg , typically costing around 1400 LSL (Lesotho Loti), equivalent to US$100 each way. The flight cuts down a 5-hour car journey to just 55 minutes on the plane.

You should arrange taxi pick-up in advance as often there are no taxis at the airport. The best way is to get your hotel to arrange the transfer for you. Taxis charge around 50-80 LSL (US$3-6) to Maseru each way.

Check for Flights to Lesotho

For those without your own car, Vaal-Maseru runs a coach service between Johannesburg and Maseru. You can find the bus schedule here .  Minibuses run pretty much anywhere from the Maseru Bridge border, but you must get there early in the morning (07:00) as there may be only 1 bus a day.

The most popular way to travel into Lesotho from South Africa is overland via border crossings. The journey from Johannesburg to Maseru is just 5 hours by car. We booked our rental car online from Discover Car Hire . For the entire two-week trip in South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho, it only cost us just US$250 including a toddler car seat and all the permits we had to pay to drive the car across borders.

When taking a rented car, be sure to get permission from the rental company to take the car into Lesotho. You will need to show written permission from the rental company at border control. Be clear with your rental agency about what’s covered and what’s not in order to avoid unpleasant surprises.

The most popular border posts are Sani Pass, Ficksburg bridge, Caledonspoort, and Maseru bridge. Note that most borders close around 6pm, some as early as 4pm. Only Maseru Bridge and Ficksburg Bridge are open 24 hours. Check here for details of their operating hours.

On our way into Lesotho, we were lucky enough to find the Caledonspoort border rather empty. The border crossing took only around 10 minutes in total. But on our way out of Lesotho, there was quite a long line at Maseru Bridge – the most used crossing – in the early morning. We spent around one hour waiting in line on the Lesotho side to get our passports stamped.

Sani Pass is the most famous border post, because of the spectacular drive and unique high-altitude location. The legendary mountain road zigzags its way through the Drakensberg Mountains, and is a steep and challenging road to navigate.

After crossing the pass, most travelers will stop to have a drink at Africa’s highest bar. You can even stay overnight at the highest pub in Africa .

You can ONLY use the Sani Pass if you have a 4×4. If you’re not a confident driver, I suggest booking a Sani Pass tour to visit Sani Pass with knowledgable local guides.

We chose to travel Swaziland , South Africa and Lesotho in June, mainly for the mild winter climate and better wildlife opportunities. Read more on the best time to travel Lesotho .

June to September is the winter dry season in South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho. During this period, there is less vegetation and animals are more concentrated around rivers and waterholes, making it easier to spot them. There are also fewer mosquitos.

However, it can get cold in the evenings especially since most of Lesotho is mountainous. That means you’ll need to bring a winter/down jacket. Temperatures in the lowlands range from 12 to 25 degrees Celsius, and in the mountains from 3 to 10 degrees Celsius. We mostly wore t-shirt and shorts or cargo pants during the day, plus a light jacket at night.

The best way to travel around Lesotho is by car rental. We booked our rental car online from Discover Car Hire . For the entire two-week trip in South Africa , Swaziland and Lesotho, it only cost us just US$250 including a toddler car seat and all the permits we had to pay to drive the car across borders.

Contrary to what most websites say, you DON’T need a 4×4 to drive into Lesotho. You only need a 4×4 to drive the Sani Pass. Most roads in Lesotho are relatively good, though certain stretches may have lots of potholes. Because the country is mountainous, be prepared for steep mountain roads, especially close to the border with South Africa. Still, we were absolutely fine traveling around Lesotho in a normal car.

Petrol can also be a problem — it is best to fill the tank in Maseru or in South Africa. Outside Maseru, unleaded can be very hard to find, and even LRP and diesel can be in short supply. If you’re not renting a car, the most common mode of transport is minibuses.

Unlike neighboring South Africa , Lesotho has limited tourism infrastructure and there aren’t quite as many luxury hotels to choose from. You’ll find may midrange hotels in Maseru, but beyond that, there are a handful of accommodation choices in each town or area.

Here are some of the best places to stay in Lesotho that are worth checking out:

Maliba Lodge — Staying here was the highlight of our Lesotho trip! As the first and only five-star hotel in Lesotho, Maliba Lodge is an outstanding mountain retreat for those who truly want to escape. It is located in high altitudes of the pristine Tsehlanyane National Park. There are lots of hiking trails crisscrossing the area; the hotel also organizes community tours and pony treks. The lodge also has a kids’ club for young children. Read my full review here.

AVANI Maseru Hotel — Probably the best hotel in Maseru, this upscale hotel is great for those looking for modern comforts in the country’s capital. It’s located along the Caledon River, in the centre of Maseru, with easy access to the Pioneer Shopping Mall. There’s a large outdoor swimming pool, a thatched pool bar and restaurant in the hotel itself.

Greater Heights B&B — We stayed here when we were in Maseru and found the B&B to be a really comfortable, budget option. The new B&B offers great value-for-money with spanking clean interiors and big, spacious rooms.   It’s located at the base of the Parliament Hill, which is a great spot for catching sunset. For some mod cons, the hotel is a few minutes from the Maseru Shopping Mall.

Thaba Bosiu Cultural Village   — Thaba Bosiu was was once the capital of Lesotho, having been King Moshoeshoe’s stronghold. These days, you can stay in the cultural village here where thatch-roofed hut have been converted into comfortable rooms. The village is a good introduction before visiting the plateau as the museum has a small but informative display on Lesotho history. You can also get a guided tour around the cultural village and visit various traditional Bosotho huts.

The currency used is the Lesotho Loti (LSL). The current exchange rate is 1 USD =13.30 LSL and 1 EUR = 15.35 LSL. Note that the African rand (ZAR) can be used almost everywhere in Lesotho, so if you’re coming from South Africa , there’s no need to exchange currency. If you still want o have some Loti with you, you can change with taxi drivers or petrol kiosk attendants at the border towns (don’t expect official exchange bureaus.)

Lesotho is an inexpensive country to travel in, especially when compared to South Africa. Midrange hotels usually cost around US$30-100 per night for a double room, and meals are around US$3-10 per person depending on where you eat.

There aren’t as many restaurants in Lesotho, so expect to eat at more local eateries and diners. ATMs are common in Lesotho, but international cards are rarely accepted outside the capital.

Lesotho Travel: Our Four-Day Itinerary

As mentioned, Lesotho is relatively small, but distances are still long as it is mountainous. You can get a taste of it in a few days, but it’s advisable to take at least a week to see more of Lesotho. We spent four days in Lesotho and only saw the northern part of the country. If you also have just have a few days in Lesotho, check out our detailed itinerary and feel free to use it on your trip!

To enter Lesotho, we chose to cross the Calendenspoort border from South Africa. This was the most spectacular drive of our whole trip through South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho. The mountainscapes were mindblowing and we found ourselves woo-ing and ahh-ing at the bend of every turn.

The border crossing into Lesotho was quick and easy: we didn’t even need to pay any road tax and show any permit. The customs officers only checked Alberto’s drivers license and not the car. (That said, I recommend not taking the risk and getting your Lesotho permit from your rental company in advance.)

After crossing into Lesotho, it was just an hour’s drive to our destination, Maliba Lodge in T’sehlanyane National Park . The road into the national park was absolutely stunning, flanked by steep mountain slopes dotted with thatch-roofed mud huts and grazing cattle. We were surrounded by the famous Maloti Mountains that extend for about 100 km into the Free State.

lesotho travel - mudhouses

We absolutely loved our time at Maliba Lodge, a luxurious eco-lodge poised on the top of the Maloti Mountains within a protected national park. The hotel is specially designed to celebrate the Lesotho tradition, sharing many architectural features with the traditional houses that dot the landscapes. On the outside, the huts at Maliba Lodge look very simple, with grass thatched-roofs and brown walls; but on the side, they’re equipped with five-star features and modern comforts. Read my full review here.

The next day, we signed up for a community tour with Maliba Lodge. Most of the lodge staff are from the surrounding Basotho villages and they know the area inside out, so we were definitely in good hands. Our guide brought us to three villages that were just a few kilometres from the lodge and the experience gave us incredible insights to how the Basotho live.

The first stop was the traditional beer-brewing hut, where the villagers prepared local beer together. We chanced upon a group of men singing, hitting the hops, and preparing them for the fermentation process. Then we got to try the traditional beer ourselves — which tasted much better than I expected.

Lesotho travel - locals making beer with hops

Next, we went to visit a series of traditional mud huts where the villagers lived. Most of the huts had electricity as well as kitchen and beds. We also got to meet a sangoma, or traditional healer, who happened to be a lady in her sixties. She showed us all her tools and even demonstrated how she made certain medication.

In the afternoon, Alberto and I went on a pony trek in the national park, while Kaleya stayed at the kids club at Maliba Lodge (huge thanks to the kind staff who offered to take care of her!).

The Basotho pony is a unique species of small horses that have evolved over the years. We rode up the horses up the mountain ridges to the Blackpool, one of the many natural pools in the area. Along the way, we spotted an eland (second largest antelope in Africa) as well as eagles in the distance. The national park is also home to mountain baboons, bearded vultures, and falcon.

Lesotho travel - riding a Basotho pony

Leaving T’sehlanyane National Park behind us, we started our drive south to explore more of Lesotho. We were truly impressed by what we’d seen so far — the landscapes of northern Lesotho reminded me of Bhutan and Ethiopia, with sandy-brown mountains in the backdrop and dry millet fields carved into terraces on the lowlands.

With our expectations rather high, we were disappointed to find there weren’t quite much to see enroute to Maseru, in terms of natural attractions or cultural sights. We wanted to stop over at Sebung River to see some dinosaur footprints but were warned against it by our lodge. We were told that permission was needed from the local chief to visit.

Then we made a special stop at Teyateyaneng, known as the craft centre of Lesotho. We had a hard time finding Sesoto Design Gallery that was highly recommended in our guidebook, but eventually found that the weaving workshop was closed and the tiny store was just stocked with expensive handwoven runs. A place worth stopping is the Lesotho Mountain Craft Gallery that’s a few kilometers outside of town. Prices are high but there’s a bigger selection and the lady who runs it is more than willing to chat and show you how the weaving is done. Click to see its Google Maps location.

We did end up having a few hours to explore Maseru, the capital of Lesotho. There aren’t a lot of attractions in Maseru per se, but it’s worthwhile to spend a day getting to know the city. Start with the Lesotho National Museum , which holds the best of sculptures and ethnic relics in Lesotho.

I also recommend heading up to the parliament hill for sunset — that was quite a pleasant surprise for us. From the vantage point, Maseru looked surprisingly sparse, with only clusters of houses scattered over the dry grassy plains.

We found the B&B to be a really comfortable, budget option. The new B&B offers great value-for-money with spanking clean interiors and big, spacious rooms.   It’s located at the base of the Parliament Hill, which is a great spot for catching sunset. For some mod cons, the hotel is a few minutes from the Maseru Shopping Mall.

On our last day, we woke up early and drove just 10 minutes to the Maseru bridge border post. It was pretty crowded and we had to spend one hour waiting in line on the Lesotho side to get our passports stamped. Luckily it was fast on the South African side and we managed to go on our way by 10am. From there, it was a five-hour drive back to Johannesburg, where our journey began.

Technically, we only had three days in Lesotho; but having that third night in Lesotho definitely gave us some extra time to explore Maseru and get to know Lesotho a bit better. If you do have some time to spare, I recommend spending your fourth day exploring the Thaba Bosiu Cultural Village , about 30 minutes from the city. It provides the best historical gateway in Lesotho and is such an amazing place to have a hike. It holds a great natural significant portraying the historical Basotho fighting the Boers at that particular hill.

As we only had a few days in Lesotho, we only saw the northern part of the country. There are lots more to experience in the rest of the country, including:

  • Afriski — Ski and Mountain Resort for skiing in winter (June – September)
  • Bokong Nature Reserve — hiking paradise great for those who love the outdoors (the Lepaquoa waterfall freezes in winter into a solid column of ice)
  • Sehlabathebe National Park — remote mountain reserve great for hiking with rare wildlife, impressive waterfalls, and ancient rock paintings and stone shelters
  • Katse — the impressive Katse Dam
  • Morija — dinosaur footprints
  • Semonkong — Maletsunyane Falls
  • Thaba Bosiu — The mountain stronghold where King Moeshoeshoe the Great established the Kingdom of Lesotho

What to Pack for Lesotho

If you’re traveling Lesotho in winter (June to September) like we did, you should pack for cold weather, but there’s no need for a thick coat, gloves and winter hat (unless you’re going skiing). 3 layers should do: a lightweight bottom, a fleece, and a thin waterproof outer layer. When we traveled there in June, it was mainly sunny and warm during the day (t-shirts and long pants were enough) and only chilly at night. For those traveling in summer, spring or fall, one layer is enough, but don’t forget to bring a thin jacket for chilly nights.

I’m a strong believer in ‘less is more’. The less you travel with, the more convenient it will be to move around. If you can’t see yourself using something daily, you probably don’t need it.

Here are some of the essentials to pack for a trip to Lesotho:

1.  Long Sleeve Moisture Wicking Tees : The key to staying warm in Lesotho is layering. Bring some    long sleeve t-shirts that are great for hiking, that you can easily remove throughout the day and night.

2 .  Fleece Base : This is my favorite gear for cold climates. It’s thick but lightweight, and keeps me warm even in sub-zero temperatures. Plus most fleece are cheap and easy to find everywhere. I usually get one that can be zipped all the way down, so I can easily remove layers when I’m warm.

3.  Soft Shell Jacket : Pack a thin waterproof, soft shell jacket regardless of the weather you’re traveling. It’s particularly useful for the rain. This also acts as an extra layer between your shirt and down jacket or parka. I used this almost everyday on my trip.

4.  Quick-Dry Pants : These are something I wear on almost every trip. They’re lightweight, thin, comfortable and waterproof. I can wear them in winter and summer, without feeling too warm or cold.

5.  Hiking Boots : A pair of sturdy hiking boots that are waterproof and protective for hiking in the mountains of Lesotho. I’ve used mine for around 2 years now and they’ve been to many countries and different types of terrain with me. Instead of getting those high boots that are ridiculously heavy and thick, I think it’s better to travel with hiking boots like these.

I enjoyed your comprehensive and detailed information on Lesotho, as it is seldom that any travel author takes the time to really understand a destination, which I feel that you achieved in this blog. Lesotho is the most remarkable spark of brilliance as it is just so remote and real. I love the rural areas that are untouched by man. I have spent many happy days in Lesotho and the one thing that has fascinated me the most, is the simple and unsophisticated perception of many communities. Best of luck with your future travels and we look forward to more travel articles of this calibre.

Why some major artists are suddenly canceling shows, and in some cases entire tours

A series of tour cancellations and changes by big-name artists has sparked questions about whether the post-pandemic live music boom could be cooling, as consumer spending fatigue meets elevated ticket prices.

On Friday, Jennifer Lopez announced she was canceling her 2024 tour , citing a desire to spend more time with her family. Meanwhile, the Black Keys announced they were abandoning a stadium tour in favor of a series of shows at smaller venues.

Both tours had recently become the subject of social media fodder, namely screenshots showing empty venues at select tour dates. (NBC News could could not directly verify their authenticity.)

Silhouettes of people enjoying a concert

Indeed, some of the evidence of a slowdown is anecdotal. SeatGeek said in an email that the average resale ticket price to attend a summer concert is down to $213 from $257 around this time last year. The company suggested some of the decline could be attributed to the absence of megatours on par with Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” and Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” outings last year.

For artists whose popularity has crescendoed, there appears to be plenty of demand — and high prices. The average resale price for Olivia Rodrigo’s “Guts” tour is $571, and the next-highest is $409 to see Morgan Wallen, according to SeatGeek data first reported by Axios .

Many of those tours are being sold through Ticketmaster and its parent Live Nation. And prior to facing landmark accusations that it is a monopoly , a claim it denies, Live Nation reported its biggest first quarter ever, with $3.8 billion in revenues. Its concerts business alone was up 26% to $2.9 billion, while “estimated fans” globally were up more than 20%, and up 42% in North America.

Yet official government data points to the makings of a return to a more normal pace for live music event sales after a post-pandemic boom. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported last month that movie and concert admissions prices climbed just 3.4% year over year through April, the lowest reading since 2021 and the second-consecutive month showing a slowdown.

Dave Clark, editor of Ticket News, which tracks the live entertainment industry, said the period of explosive live music growth following pandemic reopenings may in hindsight be seen as an aberration: People were simply more eager — and more financially able — to go to as many shows as they could after months cooped up indoors.

This year, Clark said, a reckoning may be emerging.

“The days where there was enough demand to sell out arenas at top dollar just isn’t there in this live events economy — outside of people like Taylor Swift who can sell whatever they want wherever they want,” he said.

At a time when many consumers are struggling to pay for basic necessities, he said, “people are seeing some of the prices they’re asking and just saying, ‘Hard pass.’”

Another factor may be a supply issue, Clark added: too many acts trying to tour at once, or too many times. In the pre-streaming era, bands would go on tour as a way of marketing an album. These days, he said, it’s reversed, since the returns on recorded music have shrunk dramatically.

“Now they’re making records to sell the tour,” he said. “That paradigm has a lot to do with it. It’s just a very overloaded market.”

The Black Keys did just release a new album, and its debut single hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart in March.

Still, the rock duo announced it would cancel and reschedule its summer touring plans, switching from arenas to other venues that provide a more “intimate experience,” according to the band. The new dates have not yet been announced.

The Black Keys aren’t the only group that may be falling victim to costly concert fatigue.

Pop-rock band 311 announced it had canceled upcoming European tour dates due to the “rising costs of touring overseas,” which made completing certain portions of the tour “unfeasible.”

Other stars including Pink and Justin Timberlake have also recently canceled specific show dates, while the Jonas Brothers recently postponed their upcoming European tour , though none officially cited financial concerns as reasons for doing so.

“I think with all that competition for fan dollars, it was obviously natural that some artists were going to lose,” said Bill Werde, director of the Syracuse University Bandier Program for Recording and Entertainment Industries.

There are still plenty of large-scale tours planned for this summer that, so far, appear to be unaffected by flagging demand. Hootie & the Blowfish have 48 dates booked this year, while Dave Matthews Band is slated for 34. Other top acts hitting the road include Maroon 5, Zac Brown Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kenny Chesney and Chris Stapleton.

But experts say recent economic trends in the live-music industry, especially the type of consolidation the Justice Department is now targeting, have translated into fewer smaller-sized venues.

That’s made it more difficult for a given tour date to make financial sense for the artist, venue and promoter.

“Some shows, they can’t afford to drop prices; they can’t afford to wait to try to sell out the rest of the building,” Clark said.

If there is uncertainty about all stakeholders being able to at least break even, he said, the show might get canceled.

Such realities have collided with a more circumspect concertgoer. Brittney D’Mello, a 23-year-old K-pop fan from New Jersey who works in corporate marketing, posted to X about her frustrations with the current touring landscape.

“The tickets are too expensive,” D’Mello said. “There’s only a SMALL amount of people (10%) that will spend $500+ on vip/floor/premium,” she said. “The rest of us have budgets and won’t spend $100 on nosebleeds,” she said, referring to seats that are typically the farthest away from the stage.

“Everyone is touring this year … and we only have money for 2-3 concerts MAX,” she added.

In a follow-up interview with NBC News, D’Mello said she simply decided to cap her concert budget.

“I will only go see two artists that are my tried-and-true favorite artists,” she said. “But I won’t be casually going to concerts anymore. And after going to concerts twice, I think that’s where I stop.”

Jennifer Lopez cancels 2024 tour This Is Me: 'Completely heartsick and devastated'

lesotho travel tour

Jennifer Lopez has canceled her summer North American tour , which was to be her first in five years, weeks before she was scheduled to go on the road.

The pop star made the announcement Friday in her On The JLo fan newsletter.

"Representatives for Live Nation announced today that the Jennifer Lopez US Summer 2024 Tour 'THIS IS ME...LIVE' is canceled, citing ... 'Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends,'" the newsletter reads.

The statement was followed by a personal note , "A Special Message to My JLovers OnTheJLo."

"I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary. I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again," Lopez wrote. "I love you all so much. Until next time..."

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

USA TODAY has reached out to Live Nation for comment.

Lopez's first show of the tour had been slated for June 26 in Orlando, Florida.

This Is Me... Live announcement comes after seven tour dates were canceled

The announcement comes weeks after several shows on the tour were canceled without explanation. According to Ticketmaster, Lopez's scheduled performances in Nashville, Tennessee; New Orleans; Raleigh, North Carolina; Atlanta; Houston; Cleveland and Tampa, Florida would no longer take place.

"Unfortunately, the event organizer has had to cancel your event," the message for those pages reads.

This is Me...Live was a 30-date arena tour that was going to feature Lopez's chart-breakers and classic hits from her discography, like songs "On The Floor," "Let's Get Loud" and "Jenny from the Block." Her most recent tour in 2019, the It's My Party tour, sold out venues across the country.

The tour was in support of her new album, “This is Me … Now,” which released in February. The record was accompanied by an Amazon Prime musical movie, “ This is Me … Now: A Love Story ."

Speaking to USA TODAY earlier this year about "This is Me ... Now" possibly being her swan song, Lopez said, "This was going to be the quintessential thing I have been searching for and wanted to say about love."

"I’ve been on this search for so long, since people first met me and my first record came out and even before that in my first movie role, where I’ve been on this journey trying to figure this thing out for myself. This (album) kind of closed the loop in a way,” she said. “It captures this moment to really say the things I want to say about love, and that is that true love does exist and some things are forever. Please don’t give up on that because that’s all that matters in life … love.”'

Bennifer timeline: Their love story spans two decades, two engagements

Separate outings have fueled speculation about marriage with Ben Affleck

Lopez's announcement also comes amid widespread speculation about her marriage of nearly two years to Ben Affleck.

After various media reports suggested Lopez and Affleck may no longer be living together, the Hollywood A-List couple has been increasingly under the microscope, with media prying over their whereabouts and whether both are still wearing their rings.

On May 16, Lopez and Affleck were photographed together for the first time in over a month, with each spotted wearing their respective wedding rings.

The two were engaged to each other twice: first in 2002 then again in 2021. The couple got married in a late-night ceremony in Las Vegas on July 16, 2022, which Lopez called "the best possible wedding we could have imagined."

This is the second marriage for Affleck and the fourth for Lopez.

Tour refunds for JLo tickets

Tickets will automatically be refunded, according to the newsletter.

Fans who purchased from third-party sites such as SeatGeek, StubHub and VividSeats should reach out to those websites for refunds.

The first 10 days of public open house tours at Michigan Central Station, running June 7-16, are sold out . Those visits required advanced registration that is now closed.

Guests will explore the first floor of the building during an immersive experience. There will be activations, storytelling, artwork and shareable moments.

If you got tickets to this set of tours, be sure to arrive 15 minutes before your entry time. Tickets allow visitors to access the station within 30 minutes of the ticket window. Guests should expect to be in the station for no more than one hour.

Can I tour Michigan Central Station if I didn't get tickets?

Don't worry if you missed out on the first set of tours running June 7-16; public tours of the train station will resume June 21 and will run Fridays and Saturdays through the end of August.

What's the cost for weekend Michigan Central Station tours?

No registration is required. People may visit the station from 5-9 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

The building will be closed to tours on the other days of the week until September, when expanded public hours will be announced.

How do I get to Michigan Central Station?

Major events can drive plenty of traffic in the Corktown area. Several  roads will close  throughout the reopening event, but visitors can choose from nearby street parking, free parking in the 1501 Wabash St. garage on a first-come, first-served basis, riding the bus through the Detroit Department of Transportation, e-scooters or ridesharing.

What's next for Michigan Central Station after reopening?

After reopening festivities, Michigan Central will begin a "phased reactivation" of the train station for several months as restaurant, retail and other commercial and community-focused partners fill the space.

Gov. Newsom latest to tour the Siskiyou site where crews are tearing down four huge dams

lesotho travel tour

With less than four months left before all four dams on the Klamath River are removed, California Gov. Gavin Newsom visited Siskiyou County on Wednesday to check on the progress of what is being called the nation's largest-ever dam removal project.

Newsom visited what is left of Iron Gate Dam and the former locations of Copco Dams No. 1 and No. 2. He was joined by top state officials from the Department of Fish and Wildlife, the California Environmental Protection Agency and the Natural Resources Agency.

Members of the Shasta Indian Nation tribe, which once had villages on the river where the dams were located, also joined in the tour with the governor.

"It's been on our radar from day one. And so, here we are five years later and now we're just five or six months away from this thing coming out," Newsom said in an interview with the Record Searchlight.

Below the overlook at Iron Gate Dam site, heavy equipment moved back and forth, digging up and hauling away the soil and rock that composed the earthen dam.

Soil used to build the dam was taken from a nearby hill when Iron Gate was built in the early 1960s. The dirt and rocks from the dam were being excavated from the dam and returned to the hill where it came from, according to Daniel Petersen, project manager for Kiewit Corp., the contractor in charge of the deconstruction.

At Copco Dam No. 2, there was little evidence remaining that a diversion dam once existed at the location.

There were the remnants of a retaining wall, high on the walls of the river canyon, anti-erosion material and riprap rocks lining another portion of the river where the 33-foot-tall Copco Dam once stood. A tunnel that diverted water from the river was no longer visible.

The governor last visited the river in December 2022, when the $500 million dam removal project was getting underway. Half the money used to pay for the project comes from a bond being repaid by the state and the other half is being paid for from a surcharge on ratepayers that purchase utilities from PacifiCorps.

The Klamath River Renewal Corporation, which is overseeing the project, hopes to have all four dams removed from the river by the end of September, said Mark Bransom, CEO of the corporation.

Newsom said he was happy to see the project finishing up.

"That's a powerful thing at a time when we're so consumed situationally with power, dominance and aggression in our personalized politics. This is a sustainable framework that I think just sort of softens the edges a little bit for everyone," he said.

There has been some edgy opposition to removing the dams, though.

The Iron Gate Dam, Copco Dams No. 1 and No. 2 and the J.C. Boyle Dam are being removed to improve conditions on the river for spawning salmon and steelhead.

During the hot summers, harmful algae blooms in the reservoirs and in the river were not uncommon. And fish in the river were prone to infections from parasites in the water when the river level ran warm, low and slow during the hot summers, said Ren Brownell, a spokeswoman for the renewal corporation.

Native American tribes in the area — such as the Karuk, Yurok and Shasta — supported the dam removal, as the river and the fishery are an integral part of their culture.

Bransom said the river below the Copco No. 2 Dam was nearly drained, as the dam was used to divert water from the river for generating hydroelectric power.

Brownell said that in recent years the dams produced very little power and none of it was used by Siskiyou County residents.

"It's outlived its usefulness, in terms of its economic benefits. And now we're restoring it, I think, in a way where Mother Nature approves," Newsom said.

Even though the dam removal was seen as a boon to the salmon and steelhead fishery, there was widespread opposition to the project by Siskiyou County officials and residents.

"They're the ones directly impacted. I respect that. And I think what I'm hearing today — and another reason it's good to come in and hear firsthand and check in — is I think they've been hurt and they've been listened to. It doesn't mean that everybody's happy and gets everything they want. But the fact is, it's an iterative process. It's a two-way conversation, not a one-way conversation," Newsom said.

There have been reports of some wildlife incidents on the river since the dam removal project started, including reports of wildlife becoming stuck in the mud after the dams were breached and the reservoirs were drawn down.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife released 830,000 hatchery-raised salmon into the river in February, but a large number of them were killed by what officials called "gas bubble disease" when the fish passed through a tunnel at the base of Iron Gate Dam.

The Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors, which has long opposed the dam removal, passed a resolution in March declaring a local emergency and warning of the dangers in the river due to alleged toxic chemicals in the water from breaching the dams.

The resolution warns the public not to come in contact with the water and says the "increased turbidity and sediment transport occurring during the drawdown phase of the project has resulted in public and environmental health concerns related to heavy metals and other undesirable water quality constituents."

The county has also asked the state to do monthly water quality testing in the river and of residential groundwater wells in the area around the river.

Brownell said she disagreed with the interpretation of the test results the county had done, as the county obtained results from water quality testing in the river in January when turbidity was highest. But even then, water in the river was safe to come in contact with.

She also said drinking water in the river was not an issue because only the California Department of Transportation was taking water from the river for drinking, and the agency suspended pumping before the dams were removed.

Caltrans has resumed taking drinking water from the river, but treats it before it is available for people to drink, she said. All surface water from any stream or river used for drinking must be treated to make it safe and meet state and federal standards, she said.

Many of the chemicals ― including arsenic and other heavy metals ― cited by the county occur naturally in the river, she said.

Jacqueline Nushi, who lives along the Klamath River just south of the Iron Gate Dam site, said there was intense opposition to the project, but with the dam removal nearly complete, resistance seems to be dying down.

"I just feel like we all need to just take a deep breath, let nature return the way it was and move forward with what we have," she said.

Nushi said she could understand why residents who lived along the shores of the reservoirs would be upset to lose the lake access and views.

Since the reservoirs were drained, "there's nothing. It's just dirt all the way down. It actually reminds me a little bit of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River, but not as great," Nushi said.

She said the river seems murkier now that the dams have been removed and silt washes downstream, but birds, otter and other wildlife also are returning to the river.

Bransom said it will take about two years for the silt that built up behind the dams to continue to dilute and wash downstream. In the meantime, the renewal corporation also plans to replant trees and other vegetation along the riverbank to restore the stream to how it looked before the dams were built.

"In my humble opinion, when this is done. I can't conceive that it doesn't drive property values anywhere but up, ultimately," Newsom said.

Electric Buses

Big bus tours adds 40 electric sightseeing buses to its fleet.

Global open-top tour bus operator Big Bus Tours has added 40 electric sightseeing buses to its fleet in time for the summer holiday season.

Big Bus Tours is introducing 20 brand-new Ankai electric buses in Paris and Vienna and retrofitting 20 buses in London by converting 20 of the existing diesel fleet to electric.

The new electric tour buses in Paris and Vienna are purpose-built electric sightseeing buses supplied by Ankai Anhui. The buses have 315 kW battery packs, sending power to the road through a ZF hub-motor axle. The buses can DC fast charge within four to six hours, depending on the grid load.

In London, the original buses are 2012 Ankai tri-axle diesel converted to fully electric by Equipmake. The conversion entails fitting a 327 kW battery pack that sends power to a single motor driving directly into the existing axles. The buses can be charged either AC or DC. The London buses are only used during the day, so they’ll be charged overnight on 22 kW chargers.

“We are thrilled to welcome these new electric buses as part of our investment in sustainability,” said Pat Waterman, executive chairman of Big Bus Tours. “This EV expansion is a major step forward in reducing our carbon footprint and enhancing the tour experience for our customers.”

The electric buses in all three European cities will hit the road this summer, bringing the company’s total electric fleet to 51 (just over 10% of its global fleet).
