Our top 10 tips for travelling with Eurotunnel Le Shuttle

Eurotunnel Le Shuttle believes pets are part of the family and deserve a holiday too. Here are our top tips for ensuring you and your furry friend enjoy a stress-free crossing…

1. Passports please…

Thanks to the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) , travelling abroad with your pet is easier than ever! Before your pet boards Eurotunnel Le Shuttle, they will need to have a Pet Passport, up-to-date rabies vaccinations and be microchipped – which is now a legal requirement for dogs (from 12 weeks old) in the UK. Tick treatments are no longer compulsory; however, it is always advised to check with your vet regarding diseases carried by ticks and mosquitos and find out what you can do to protect your pet. Don’t forget, one to five days before you return to the UK you must visit a   vet for your dog to be checked and given a tapeworm treatment and make sure the vets signs and stamps the pet passport

Plus, with Eurotunnel Le Shuttle it’s only £18 per pet each way for the short 35 minute crossing where you are your canine companion can stay together for the entire journey. There’s also dedicated pet exercise areas with complimentary waste bags and a 24-hour pet reception with trained staff – it’s no wonder that 71% of pets entering the UK choose Eurotunnel Le Shuttle .

2. Pet holiday insurance

Just like us, our four-legged friends need some form of holiday insurance should anything happen whilst you’re away. Contact your pet insurance provider as some policies include overseas travel whereas others will require you to add in an extra clause to cover the trip. Why not check out Eurotunnel Le Shuttle’s personal travel insurance which includes up to £200 for veterinary fees.

3. Lay off the kibble

Avoid feeding your pet right before the journey. Although there is minimal movement once you’re on-board the shuttle, your furry friend’s nerves could get the better of them! Pack some small snacks for your pet to enjoy once you arrive in France and bring some home comforts such as their favourite blanket or toy.

If you know your pet gets particularly nervous when travelling or in unfamiliar environments, also talk to your vet about calming treatments before you travel.

4. Arrive early

Arrive at least half an hour early before you board. This will allow your pet time to go to the toilet and stretch their legs in the dedicated pet exercise area. On your return to England with Eurotunnel Le Shuttle, you will need to visit the Pet Reception area for the relevant pet checks before you check in. There’s a   dedicated pet area here too and on peak dates, a drive through service.

5. Have a safe trip

Whenever travelling with your pet in your car it is always a good idea to ensure they have a seatbelt, harness or pet carrier for security. During the crossing, furry friends must stay in your car. A harness or carrier will prevent your pet from putting themselves in danger if they try to make a run for it when you open the car door.

6. Keep cool

Even in the cooler months, open your car windows slightly when on-board the shuttle for ventilation and let your pet sit in the rear seats. If you have an estate or hatchback car, staff on board the shuttle are happy for you to open the boot of your car for ventilation. Remember never leave your dog unattended in the car on a hot day.

What To Pack Depending On Your Petaway

7. catch forty winks.

Whether your pet is in a carrier or just strapped to your seat, have a blanket or bed handy so they can be comfortable and warm during the crossing. They may even fall asleep for the whole 35-minutes!

8. Stay hydrated

Make sure you pack a water bottle and pop-up bowl so your four-legged friend has access to plenty of drinking water during the journey.

9. In case of an emergency…

Again, your pet’s nerves could get the better of them so always have an ‘emergency kit’ handy in case of any accidents. This should include paper towels, pet wet wipes and poo bags. And a car air freshener!

10. Always better together

Don’t leave your pet alone in your car during the crossing, especially if they’re a nervous traveller. If you’re travelling with your family, partner or in a group, take turns stretching your legs so that someone is always sitting with them.

How to Bring Your Dog to the UK using the Le Shuttle Eurotunnel 2024

The Uk Eurotunnel Le Shuttle. traveling with dog to uk eurotunnel with dog bringing dog to uk bring a dog from usa to uk bring dog from us to uk bring dog to england

What is the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle?

Le Shuttle , formerly Eurotunnel Le Shuttle, is a convenient car train service that whisks you and your vehicle under the English Channel in just 35 minutes. This speedy tunnel crossing connects Folkestone, UK to Calais, France, making it a popular choice for travelers seeking a comfortable and time-saving alternative to ferry crossings. Le Shuttle accommodates cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and even pets, perfect for your next road trip adventure in Europe.

Taking your beloved dog on adventures across borders can be exciting, but navigating the logistics can be quite daunting. However, we at The Dog Vacation, believe it’s worth it! So in this blog we’re going to outline how to bring your dog into the UK when you’re already in Europe.

The UK has different country entry rules than the rest of Europe. Why? Because they are just better than everyone else…haha just kidding! However, when we were traveling from France into the UK, we certainly felt that way. Continue reading to learn more about how to bring your dog into the UK.

Outside of the Uk Eurotunnel Le Shuttle. traveling with dog to uk eurotunnel with dog bringing dog to uk bring a dog from usa to uk bring dog from us to uk bring dog to england

The UK does not allow airlines to fly with their pets in the cabin on ANY airlines (unless they are a service animal). UK airlines will only allow pets in the hold/cargo compartment so if you can’t bear separating with your furry friend then The Eurotunnel Le Shuttle is the next best way to enter the UK. We highly recommend traveling with your dog through The Eurotunnel Le Shuttle if you plan on coming to the UK!

Why we crossed off the other “no-go” options:

The Eurostar Train might seem tempting, but it’s moot because they are not dog-friendly. Similarly, ferries are also moot as they are only available for cargo transportation, not for dogs.

For us, the best solution for bringing Bodhi into the UK was this three part system: the train, the The Eurotunnel Le Shuttle and the taxi. However, before we can get into that part of the guide, we must first learn about….

The UK's Pet Entry Requirements

1. Check if you can bring your pet:

First, you’ll have to make sure your pet is even allowed to enter the UK. The UK has two lists of countries from which you can bring your pet from. You can find these lists on the UK government website .

2. Your Dog Must Be Microchipped:

Your dog must be microchipped with a 15-digit ISO compliant microchip. You can find more information about microchipping on the DEFRA website .

3. Your Dog Must Be Vaccinated Against Rabies:

  • Your dog must be vaccinated against rabies.
  • A minimum waiting period of 21 days is mandated after your dog receives its primary rabies vaccination. Day 1 commences the day following the vaccination.
  • Booster Vaccinations : If your dog’s rabies vaccination history demonstrates no lapse in coverage, there’s no additional waiting period required after a booster shot.
  • Repeat Vaccinations: Provided your dog’s rabies vaccination remains current, repeat vaccinations are not necessary for subsequent trips to the EU or Northern Ireland.
  • You can find more information about rabies vaccination on the DEFRA website.

4. Get pet travel document(s):

You will also need a pet travel document for your pet. This can be either a EU Pet Passport or an Animal Health Certificate (AHC). We break down the difference of what those are in our previous guide here , if you want to check it out. You can find more information about pet travel documents on the UK government website .

You’ll also need a vaccination record. A comprehensive vaccination record, documented in either a pet passport or an animal health certificate. This is absolutely vital. Inaccurate or missing information might lead to travel delays or even denied entry.

The vaccination record should include the following information for your dog:

  • Date of Birth
  • Microchip details (number, implantation date, and location)
  • Date of Rabies Vaccination
  • Vaccine details (manufacturer, product name, and batch number)
  • Validity period of the vaccination
  • Licensed veterinarian’s signature and contact information

For pet passports, the rabies vaccination record must be completed by a veterinarian in a country authorized to issue pet passports or by a veterinarian in Great Britain or an authorized EU country prior to January 1st, 2021.

Outdated Pet Passports: If your pet passport lacks a current rabies vaccination record, an animal health certificate is required.

Inside the Uk Eurotunnel Le Shuttle. traveling with dog to uk eurotunnel with dog bringing dog to uk bring a dog from usa to uk bring dog from us to uk bring dog to england

5. Tapeworm treatment (for dogs only):

Your dog must be treated for tapeworm 1 to 5 days before traveling to the UK. You can find more information about tapeworm treatment from the UK’s website here . 6. Additional requirements for travel from unlisted countries:

If you are traveling from an unlisted country, your dog will also need a blood test to check its rabies antibody levels. This blood test must be carried out at least three months after the rabies vaccination and at least 30 days before travel. You can find more information about the blood test on the DEFRA website.

Now that we have figured out all the preparations and have administered all tests, the next thing is logistics planning!

First, wherever in Europe you’re at, you’ll need to find a way to come to France. You can travel to Calais from other parts of France, but Paris is the easiest and most affordable starting destination. Entering Paris with your dog is much, much easier than the UK. You’ll likely need a EU Pet Passport, or a pet health certificate and up to date vaccinations. Please check out this guide for more details.

From Paris, the general breakdown goes like this:

1. You will take a train from Paris -> Calais

We paid €123 ($134) for 2 people, and Bodhi was able to ride for free because he was in his travel carrier. Once you arrive in Calais, the Folkestone Taxi Co . will pick you up. And they provide top notch service! They handle everything for you from purchasing the Le Shuttle/The Eurotunnel Le Shuttle tickets to coordinating with our driver, and timely customer service.

Our driver was also very sweet, he allowed us to eat in the car and feed Bodhi. He also helped us with our luggage immediately and was giving us a lot of tips on what to do once we were in London. He also timed the gas station stop perfectly. We were able to use the bathroom, refresh ourselves, get snacks, and even run around the grass with Bodhi outside. Overall we can’t recommend them enough!

If you want to reach out to the Folkestone Taxi Co , then you can view more information about their fare prices here . You can call them at their UK number (+44 01303 252000) or email them ( [email protected] ). Since we were based in the US, we emailed them and they were very fast to respond!

Before reaching out to them, we recommend you get decided on the dates of your trip (arrival and departure dates) because they book out very quickly and the longer you delay locking in a date, the pricey it can get.

2. So once the Pet Taxi / Folkestone Taxi Co . picks you up, they will drive you from Calais -> Folkestone through the Le Shuttle (Eurotunnel)

The Folkestone Taxi Co . cost was €180 ($196) per car. Please note that you’ll need to book the car type that suits your luggage needs. A bigger car for example may cost more. Next, you’ll also need to pay for the Le Shuttle ticket which is also charged per car. And again, the great part of Folkstone is that they handle all the tickets so you do not have to worry about buying separate tickets. You pay them all the fees (one time) when you book with them. We paid €259 ($282) for our car, which was a normal 4 door sedan, when we went in June 2023. Note that the Le Shuttle prices will change depending on the type of car you’re in, and the day of your travel.

3. After a few hours of chilling in the car with your pet, you’ll arrive in Folkestone. This can be the end of the Pet Taxi / Folkestone Taxi Co . service. However we went from Folkestone -> London. Of course you can head to wherever your final destination in the UK is. At this point, you have the option to extend your trip to your final destination or end the taxi service here. We decided it was more convenient to have the taxi service extended and to drive directly to London. We paid an extra €200 ($218) + tip for this. Note that this fare price could change as well depending on the day and the type of car. You can also take the train for a more affordable option, but you’ll have to wait for the train schedule.

If you’re doing a roundtrip, then this will be the breakdown on how to go back.

  • Uber from London -> Folkestone €100 ($109). There are train options that would be much more affordable but the travel time will likely be an additional 2 hours.
  • Folkestone Taxi Co. / Pet Taxi will pick you up at the Folkestone train station and drive you through the Le Shuttle. We paid €180 ($196.25) for the ride. Then you’ll have to pay for the Le Shuttle ticket again to exit the country. This time around, we paid €279 ($304.19) per car.
  • Lastly you’ll arrive at the Calais train station. You can then take the train from Calais to Paris. We paid €95 ($103.58) for 2 people and our dog Bodhi rode for free again.

Important Tip!

Note that at each Eurotunnel Le Shuttle entry point (Calais and Folkestone) there will be a pet reception area, where you will have to bring your pet inside and check them into or out of the country.  Make sure you have all the following items with you on hand, to make this point of the process as stress free as possible!

Pet documents: Ensure you have either an EU pet passport or a Great Britain pet health certificate (if no passport exists). We recommend at least 1-5 days before you leave London to make a vet appointment and get your pet’s health certificate. They are usually able to issue you this right away. Email us if you would like London vet recommendations!

Other tips to consider:

Up-to-date vaccinations and treatment: Make sure your dog’s rabies vaccination is valid (did not expire) and that your pet is fit to travel.

Booking: Train tickets, especially during peak seasons, can fill up quickly, so book in advance. While Folkestone Taxi is recommended for its convenience, consider their availability and that it aligns with your budget.

Packing essentials for you and your furry adventurer: Don’t forget to pack your own passport, your dog’s documents, tickets (mobile or printed), food for you and your pet, treats for your pup, and pet wipes for any unexpected messes. These items we recommend packing in your backpack or bag that you can easily access.

And there you go, we hope you found value out of this and that you and your pet are more prepared to travel to the UK using the Le Shuttle (Eurotunnel)!

How to take your dog on Le Shuttle

Eurotunnel dog

One of the main perks of using Le Shuttle as the gateway to an awesome European holiday (beyond the quick travel time to Calais), is you can pack everything you can fit in your vehicle, including the kitchen sink, for your trip to Europe… that also includes the dog! If the family are keen to take the dog on the next holiday, you’ll need to do a few things prior to departure in order to bring your four legged pup with you. Take a look at these steps to follow.

le shuttle travelling with dogs

1. Book a Vets Appointment

Some things have changed since Brexit, the EU pet passport may no longer be valid, and your pet needs an Animal Health Certificate. What do you need to get one? Essentially what you need to do is contact your local vet to book a ‘travel appointment’, 10 days prior to travel. For more information here is a handy link

This appointment is for your vet to essentially check your dog is up to date with all their vaccinations, most importantly rabies and that your pooch has been microchipped, and is in a fit state to join you on holiday. It requires quite a bit of paperwork so it does come at a cost. Vets charge anything from £100-£200 for this service, and unfortunately, it is required each time you head over from the UK into Europe with your fur friend.

2. Get your pet ready to travel

Whilst this isn’t compulsory, having travelled with our dog on numerous occasions for long journeys, we have found she is most comfortable in her own bed. We set her up on the back seat with her special clip that goes around the seatbelt to keep her safe. If your dog gets fidgety after a while and will try to move around, there are special travel boxes that are fantastic in keeping your pup safe whilst travel. Be sure to take their bowl and a bottle of water for the journey, maybe their fave toy, and some little treats to reward good travel behaviour.

le shuttle travelling with dogs

3. Pet Reception Check-in!

Get a folder to pop all your pet paperwork into to get the Animal Health Certificate stamped, and if you do have an old EU pet passport, take it anyway as it does contain a lot of their previously completed information. When you arrive at Le Shuttle, after checking in first, you’ll notice the Victor Hugo Terminal and the ‘Pet Reception’, you must take your dog here prior to travel. Sometimes there can be a queue, so be sure to allow yourself plenty of time before your crossing. If you do get through quite quick and have some time before travel there are places to grab food, and even a specific pet exercise area (you can’t miss it there is a large archway with a bone!), whilst you wait to board.

In Pet Reception they will be needing your booking confirmation to locate you on the system, and they will be able to see you have booked your dog to join too. They will then need to see all the paperwork provided by your vet and they will hand you a device to scan your dogs microchip. As mentioned before if you have your old EU Pet Passport, take it as it does speed up the process because all your pups information is in one place.

Please remember, on the British side you pass through check in first and make your way to pet reception in the terminal, on the French side, you go to Pet reception first and check-in your pet, then pass through the main check in gates.

le shuttle travelling with dogs

4. All aboard!

You pup is checked in, you’re good to go! You’ll be given a travel information hanger for your car, this will have a paw print symbol on it show you’ve checked your dog in successfully and that you have one in the car! Firstly, be sure to utilise the pet exercise area prior to travel, trust me when I say when your dog is worn out, they travel so much better! Go have fun in the area!

Pop your dog in your car, get them settled into to their safe travel spot and then head to the lanes to be ready to board the shuttle. You’ll be given the green light (literally), to drive onto the shuttle. Once on there will be safety talks, and before you know it you’ll be making your way to France.

A quick tip if your dog is confused about going on, simply reassure them by stroking them and working on positive reinforcements with some treats. We like to give Winnie a new toy to obsess over during the initial part of the journey, because she is completely distracted and oblivious to what is going on!

le shuttle travelling with dogs

5. Returning home

Nobody likes talking about the return journey after an exciting holiday, but you do need to follow a few more steps in order to return with your dog. Up to 5 days prior to travelling home your dog needs to be seen by a local vet to be checked out and given a worming tablet.

This might sound a bit daunting visiting a vet in a different country, but I assure you, they are so hospitable and most speak English. Some have online booking systems which allow you to select ‘return to UK’ appointments. Again, you will need the paperwork from the UK vet and if you have that EU pet passport, take that too.

le shuttle travelling with dogs

This is a fairly quick procedure, you’ll be given paperwork (keep that with everything else), and you’re good to go. This can cost around 40 Euros. A big tip is to get to where you’re going at the start of your trip, then locate a vet and book an appointment in advance, this will help you to avoid not getting an appointment as they can easily get booked up.

6. Pet Check-in

Time to check le chien in again. Just like the UK system, over in France you’ll see signs for the Pet Reception, and you simply need to provide all the paperwork from UK, France and your booking confirmation. Your dog will have their micro-chip scanned again, and if all is okay you’re good to go. Super easy!

In France you will spot lots of little pet exercise areas to use, perfect to get your pup ready for another journey. Then it’s home we go!

Travel for a Living

My experience taking the eurotunnel leshuttle.

le shuttle travelling with dogs

Have you ever taken the Eurotunnel LeShuttle? Over the years, we’ve driven from the UK to mainland Europe many times. And would usually take the ferry from Dover to either Calais or Dunkirk. However, with Frank the pup joining us on our travels, we have switched to the Eurotunnel instead. We’ve used it for three return trips so far and have already booked our next trip in a few weeks’ time. So, I thought I would share my experience taking Eurotunnel LeShuttle with you all. In case you wondered what it is like on the Euroshuttle. Or are thinking of booking the Eurotunnel yourself for a trip to mainland Europe.

I will do my best to answer the most common questions about taking the Euroshuttle first, before sharing with you my experience of taking the Eurotunnel LeShuttle:

What’s it like on the Eurotunnel LeShuttle?

How long does it take to go through the Eurotunnel?

How much does it cost to take LeShuttle?

Which tickets are available for the Euroshuttle?

How does boarding work for the Euroshuttle?

Can I get out of the car during the LeShuttle journey?

Can I take my pet with me on the Eurotunnel LeShuttle?

What is better, Eurotunnel or ferry?

What is the eurotunnel leshuttle.

Before I share my experience of taking the Eurotunnel LeShuttle, it is probably worth clarifying what the shuttle actually is?

The Euroshuttle, or correctly named the Eurotunnel LeShuttle, is a shuttle train that operates between Folkstone and Calais, going through the Eurotunnel. But this is no normal passenger train, instead you board with your car (or van or motorhome or even lorry). So, they are a bit bigger (and not quite as sleek looking) than normal passenger trains.

Don’t confuse the Euroshuttle with the Eurostar. They both go through the Eurotunnel, but the Eurostar is the  high-speed passenger train connecting London with Paris , Brussels and Amsterdam. And believe me, when you see the two trains, there is no mistaking one for the other.

The actual train journey takes around 30 minutes. But you will need to be at the LeShuttle terminal a little earlier for check-in and boarding etc (more on that in a little while). So, the overall time to allow would be more like one and a half hours. At least that was our experience in taking the Eurotunnel LeShuttle.

How much does it cost to take LeShuttle? And which types of tickets are available?

In our experience, the Eurotunnel LeShuttle is slightly more expensive than the ferry. However, you do save time, as the actual journey is only 30 minutes rather than 90 minutes on the ferry. Which is definitely something to take into consideration, when deciding whether to take LeShuttle or ferry.

The lowest price I could find online, was around 79 GBP one way. Prices obviously vary, depending on time of day, travel dates and type of ticket. So, have a look around and play with the days / times before booking. You may be able to save yourself some money, if you can be a little flexible.

There are different types of tickets available for the Eurotunnel LeShuttle:

Day Trip & Overnight

This is the cheapest option (and you might be able to buy a ticket for as little as 31 GBP each way). But as the name already suggests, this is a ticket that requires you to return the same day or latest the next day. And the ticket is non-refundable.

Short-Stay Saver

Next up is the Short-Stay option. Which gives you up to five days between journeys. More expensive than the Day Trip ticket, these tickets start at 79 GBP one way. The short-stay tickets are also non-refundable.

Standard Ticket

If you are planning a week’s holiday in France (or even longer than a week), this is the cheapest ticket you could get. You can book the Standard Ticket one way or return (with as much time as you like between the two journeys). Prices start at 91 GBP one way and are non-refundable.

Standard Ticket Refundable

These are the tickets we have experience with when taking the Eurotunnel LeShuttle. Starting at 131 GBP each way, you will get a refund, should your travel plans change. Given the rather disastrous two years we all had when it comes to travelling, these were the tickets we felt most comfortable with. As we could never be sure whether travel really would go ahead as planned or not. First time we booked Eurotunnel LeShuttle was Christmas 2020. Well, have a guess how that worked out. We ended up cancelling the trip a week before. But thanks to booking refundable tickets, we received the full amount back without any hassle. Same went for Christmas 2021. But I have high hopes for Christmas 2022 (dammit, there I said it and jinxed it, haven’t I?)

And lastly, the Flexiticket

Starting at 249 GBP, these tickets don’t come cheap. But they give you full flexibility and are probably the most luxurious experience when taking the Eurotunnel LeShuttle. You simply turn up and board the next available train. You have a dedicated check-in lane (so no lengthy queueing), as well as an exclusive waiting lounge with free refreshments. I have not tried this option, so I can’t tell you whether the extra money is worth it and if it really betters your experience taking the Eurotunnel LeShuttle. I would just hope it does.

Currently it is not possible to just show up at the port and buy a ticket last minute on the spot. You will have to book your ticket at least 24 hours in advance. Which I guess is fine for most of us. I mean, how often do you wake up in the morning and think to yourself ‘Oh how about a trip to France today?’ … probably not that often. But then again, I do remember one trip years ago, when we were meant to fly to Germany in the evening. And our flight was cancelled (along with many others) after hours of delay. We were unable to rebook for several days… and ended up packing the car, booking a last-minute ferry ticket the next morning and driving to Germany instead.

Little money saving tip when booking your Eurotunnel LeShuttle ticket:

If you live in the UK and have a Tesco Club Card, you can use your clubcard points to buy Eurotunnel LeShuttle tickets. Converting 50p of clubcard vouchers into £1.50 for the ticket. Which effectively means you only pay a third for your LeShuttle ticket if you have enough Tesco Club Card points. However, these tickets are always non-refundable. Keep that in mind, when you use those vouchers. There might well be offers like this available from other retailers. I am only mentioning Tesco Club Card, as that is the one, I personally have. And have seen the offer, although not used yet.

How do I board the Eurotunnel LeShuttle?

Now that we’ve covered the basics, how about I finally tell you a little about our experience taking the Eurotunnel LeShuttle.

Obviously, boarding a train by car is a little different from boarding a passenger train. You don’t just stand on the platform, wait for your train to arrive, and enter.

First up: Check-in

To check in and board the Euroshuttle, you will have to arrive at least an hour before departure. Usually, it would be 45 minutes, but since we had the dog with us, we needed a little extra time.

Once we arrived at the port, the first thing we needed was our booking reference. From there, our next stop was the pet reception, to check Frank in.

Our experience travelling on Eurotunnel Le Shuttle - Travel for a Living

For that, we needed to bring the dog, as well as his Animal Health Certificate (or EU passport, if still valid) and they asked us to scan his chip, checking the dog we were taking matched the paperwork we had. Ever since Brexit,  taking a dog abroad  has become a bit of a challenge, but I won’t go into too much detail here. After all, this post is about our experience taking the Eurotunnel LeShuttle, not the bureaucracy madness caused by Brexit.

le shuttle travelling with dogs

Upon check-in, we received a boarding pass, that needed to be displayed in the windscreen (same as you would when boarding the ferry). First time we took the LeShuttle, we got a little confused with said boarding pass. It had a letter and number on it, which we assumed would be the parking lane for boarding (as it would be when taking the ferry). As we boarded an earlier train and were asked to immediately proceed to boarding, we didn’t get a chance to look around and get our bearings on how it all works. We went straight from pet reception into our car, drove off and followed the signs to ‘France’, until we arrived at the boarding area. But whilst our boarding pass said ‘N5’, we could not find a lane N. We did find a lane 5, but that was shut. After some confusion, we decided to chance it and just take the next available lane, regardless of its number.

le shuttle travelling with dogs

Which turned out to be the right call. During subsequent trips, we worked out that the letter/number combination on the boarding pass does not indicate where to park for boarding, but when to board. Each train is given a letter and numbers 1, 3 and 5 for the three subsequent boarding times. At check in and all around the premises, large screens show you when each letter/number is due to board. And you will then just head towards the boarding area and join the queue once your letter/number is called.

At the terminal

First time we took the Euroshuttle, we didn’t actually get a chance to explore the terminal either side. As on both occasions we were allowed on an earlier train. And therefore, rushed straight through from pet reception to boarding. But on subsequent visits, we had a little spare time and were able to explore the terminals a little.

Both Folkstone and Calais have customer terminals with a few restaurants, shops, duty-free shopping and restrooms. First few times we’ve taken the Euroshuttle, dogs weren’t allowed inside the terminals, making it a little awkward when travelling with pets.

However, during our most recent trip (yes, we did actually make it home for Christmas this time), Folkestone had updated their terminal and now has a pet lounge. Calais still has a sign outside saying ‘no dogs’ but more and more people were taking the dog inside and no one moaned. But even though dogs are allowed inside the building, they are still not allowed into the actual shops. So, no duty-free shopping.

Border control

Once you are due to board, you will first have to pass border control. But no worries, just follow the signs to ‘France’ or ‘UK’ and you will automatically arrive at border control. Occasionally we had a bit of a queue at border control, but most times this was quick and easy. Along with the passport check, you may also be asked to park up for customs checks. So far, we have not been checked even once, but last time they did ask the two cars ahead of us to go to customs.

Our experience travelling on Eurotunnel Le Shuttle - Travel for a Living

Boarding the Eurotunnel LeShuttle train

Border control cleared; we arrived at the boarding area. As mentioned before, you don’t have a dedicated lane. You just park up in the next available lane and wait for boarding to commence. Surprisingly, you can’t actually see the trains yet but trust me when I say they are near.

We had mixed experiences with boarding. Most times it started relatively quick. But on our last trip, we sat for quite a while on the tarmac here, until we were allowed to board. Annoyingly, there is no announcement if a train is delayed. All you get is the info to go to the boarding lanes. But once you are there, you just sit tight and wait. If your wait drags out a little, there are restrooms and vending machines nearby, just in case.

Once boarding commences, you will drive down to the platform and will be directed to the train. The car area of the Eurotunnel LeShuttle train has two levels. We have not yet been upstairs; we’ve always been directed to board on the lower level. But you are stuck in a car in a train in a tunnel… so chances are, the view isn’t any better up there, just saying.

Our experience travelling on Eurotunnel Le Shuttle - Travel for a Living

With all cars parked (and squeezed together really tight to allow as many cars on the train as possible), the internal section doors of the train will shut, and the journey will start.

Our experience taking the Eurotunnel LeShuttle: on board the shuttle

The journey through the Eurotunnel takes approx. 30 minutes. When parking the car, you are advised to open your windows a little, as it can get a bit warm and stuffy in the car during that time. Especially in summer. Since you are not allowed to switch on your engine whilst the train is moving, your car’s aircon isn’t much help.

le shuttle travelling with dogs

Since this isn’t your normal passenger train, there aren’t many mod cons on board. Yes, there are restrooms every couple of sections, but there is no onboard restaurant or entertainment in any way. First two trips we took, we weren’t even allowed to leave the car. But last time it was all back to normal, and the restrooms were open during the journey.

The Eurotunnel LeShuttle offers onboard Wi-Fi for free. But whilst we were able to connect, it was so slow that we eventually gave up. Instead, we made good use of the half hour journey and had our breakfast instead.

le shuttle travelling with dogs

Once the train arrives on the other side, it all goes relatively quick. The doors open and everyone drives off the train, onto the platform and out of the station. Do you actually call it a station? Or would it be a harbour? Not a Scooby Doo (clue).

There were no further controls this end, as we had already gone through passport control and customs before boarding the train.

Can I take my pet on the Eurotunnel LeShuttle?

Since I’ve been mentioning our dog about 50 times already, you have probably worked out the answer to that question. Yes, you can take your dog with you when travelling on the Euroshuttle. Which is the whole point, why we started using the Shuttle to start with. And not only dogs, you can also take cats, ferrets and rabbits.

If taking your pet on the Eurotunnel LeShuttle, you must add it to your booking beforehand. And it does come with a little price tag. 22 GBP each way. Which I do find a little annoying, given that I can add an additional person free of charge.

I have already told you about the pet reception, where your pet will be scanned, and its paperwork checked.

And whilst awaiting boarding to commence, you can visit the dog exercise area. Which is nice at Folkstone, with a relatively large run. But the exercise area in Calais is a bit dingy and small, just a fenced in piece of fake lawn, with nothing else to offer.

Our experience travelling on Eurotunnel Le Shuttle - Travel for a Living

Given our experience taking the Eurotunnel LeShuttle, I do prefer the Eurotunnel over the ferry. At least for us it works better. But both options have their pros and cons.

Yes, the Eurotunnel LeShuttle is quicker (it’ll save you a good hour over taking the ferry). But it is also more expensive than taking the ferry.

And you get less of a view. In fact, you get absolutely no view. Whereas travelling by ferry enables you to see the white cliffs of Dover as you enter or exit the harbour.

le shuttle travelling with dogs

Travelling with our dog, we prefer the train, as it means he can stay with us. If going by ferry, dog would need to stay in the car whilst we would have to go upstairs for the crossing. And since plenty of people don’t seem to know how to lock their car without switching on the alarm, this is an experience I would rather avoid for our beloved pup. We took the ferry to the Isle of Wight last year and the moment the ferry started its engines, the car alarms started, and our pup got all restless (and he wasn’t even down in the car, he was up on the deck with us).

Both ferry and train have their advantages and disadvantages. And I leave it up to you to decide which is better. But if you’ve never done it, it sure is an experience taking the Eurotunnel LeShuttle.

Have you taken the shuttle before? Did you like it?

Jodi Ziskin's picture

Le Shuttle Offers A Great Way To Travel With Pets Across The English Channel.  Eurotunnel Le Shuttle is a service that transports passengers and their cars via train between Folkestone, England and Calais, France . Faster than traveling by Ferry, Le Shuttle takes only 35 minutes to make the trip. Prices start at $35.62 or £22. All fares include the car and up to 9 passengers. There is no charge for fuel or luggage.

The best part for travelers - Le Shuttle is very pet friendly. They consider pets part of the family, so they are treated just like human passengers. They get to travel in your vehicle with you!

The fee for dogs, cats, and ferrets is $24 USD or £15 (registered guide and assistance dogs travel free). Rabbits, rodents, water mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects also travel free of charge.

Le Shuttle has a trained pet staff, offers dedicated exercise areas at their stations and even complimentary doggie waste bags.

From the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle website:

All pet dogs, cats and ferrets (including guide and hearing dogs) can enter or re-enter the UK from any country in the world without quarantine provided they meet the rules of the scheme, which will be different depending on the country or territory the pet is coming from. Please remember you are responsible for ensuring this is the case for your cat, dog, or ferret prior to travel.

Companion animals do need proper documentation for traveling, including a pet passport, a microchip, proof of rabies vaccination, and for dogs only, proof of tapeworm treatment. More information is included in the FAQ section, on their website.

According to Le Shuttle, more than 48% of the pets entering into the United Kingdom choose Eurotunnel Le Shuttle.  More than 600,000 pets have used the service to date.

How to take a Dog on The Eurotunnel [Guide, FAQ & Prices]

le shuttle travelling with dogs

Taking your dog on the Eurotunnel is very straightforward.

The Channel Tunnel is an easy way to travel between the the U.K. and France. The Eurotunnel shuttle runs between Folkestone and Calais 24/7, 365 days a year and takes around 35 minutes.

So, if you are planning on taking your dog to France or to Europe, taking the Eurotunnel is an easy and convenient way to travel.

In this article, we will talk you through how to take your dog on the Eurotunnel and answer the following questions:

What documents do you need to take your dog on the Eurotunnel?

How much does it cost to take your dog on the eurotunnel, how do i book my dog onto the eurotunnel, are dogs allowed in the eurostar terminal buildings.

  • Where will your dog travel while in the Eurotunnel?

Can I take more than one dog on the Eurotunnel?

What happens on the day of travel?

You will need to bring the following documents with you:

  • Booking confirmation;
  • A microchip;
  • A Pet Passport or Animal Health Certificate; and
  • Proof of rabies vaccination
  • Proof of tapeworm treatment administered 1-5 days before travel (Calais to Folkestone)

Microchip / Tattoo

Your dog will need to be fitted with a microchip, before or on the same day as their first rabies vaccination is administered.

The microchip number of your dog, must match the microchip number on their documentation.

If your dog was tattooed before 3 July 2011, then that will be accepted as identification.

EU Pet Passport or Animal Health Certificate

Your dog must have an EU Pet Passport, or an Animal Health Certificate to travel on the Eurotunnel.

If you are traveling from an EU country, you should get your dog an EU Pet Passport.

If you are traveling from Great Britain, and have an EU Pet Passport issued after 1 January 2021 , you will need to obtain an Animal Health Certificate. As of 1 January 2021, the UK is listed as a Part 2 listed third country under the EU Pet Travel Scheme. Therefore EU Pet Passports issued in Great Britain, are no longer valid for travel to the EU.

If your dog has an EU Pet Passport issued in Great Britain before 1 January 2021 , they will be accepted for entry into the UK .

If you are traveling from a non EU Listed or Unlisted Third Country, you will need to obtain an Official Third Country Veterinary Health Certificate.

How to obtain an Animal Health Certificate:

You will need to take your dog to the vet, no more than 10 days before your planned trip.

The certificate will need to be signed by an official veterinarian.

Your dog’s Animal Health Certificate will be valid after the date of issue for:

  • 10 days for entry into the EU, or Northern Island
  • 4 months for onward travel within the EU
  • 4 months for re-entry to Great Britain

Your dog will require a new Animal Health Certificate for each trip to an EU country, or Northern Ireland from Great Britain.

For further information, you can check Defra’s website .

Rabies Vaccination

Your dog must be at least 12 weeks old and vaccinated against rabies.

The following information must be recorded by a registered vet in your dog’s Animal Health Certificate or EU Pet Passport:

  • Vaccine name
  • Vaccine manufacturer
  • Vaccination date
  • Vaccine valid from date
  • Vaccine expiry date

Your vet’s signature or stamp are mandatory.

If you are traveling from EU and listed non-EU countries to the UK you must wait 21 days after the initial vaccination date. The vaccination date counts as day 0.

A waiting period is not required for subsequent visits to the UK, as long as your dog’s rabies vaccinations are kept up to date and recorded in your dog’s vet documentation.

Tapeworm Treatment (travelling to the U.K.)

All dogs travelling to the U.K. require a tapeworm treatment .

This treatment must be administered by a vet between 1-5 days / 24–120 hours before travel. The date and time of your dog’s treatment must be recorded on the pet passport or official third country veterinary certificate, by an official vet.

Additionally, the tapeworm treatment must contain Praziquantel to be effective against Echinococcus tapeworm.

The following treatments are not permitted :

Stronghold, Advocate, Frontline or Frontline Combo, Nexgard or Nexgard Spectra

To book your dog on the Eurotunnel, it will cost £22 each way .

It is recommended that you book your pet on the Eurotunnel in advance, which can done here .

However, there are additional costs that you should take into consideration.

These include the cost to obtain a pet passport or animal health certificate, microchip, rabies vaccination, tapeworm treatment, a dog travel carrier and supplies such as food and puppy training pads to soak up any accidents.

You will be given the option to add pets when booking your ticket for the Eurotunnel.

  • Go to fare finder and enter all of your details – date and time of travel, vehicle details and country of residence.
  • Select the specific time you would like to travel.
  • Select whether you would like to upgrade to Flexiplus or add insurance to your trip.
  • On the same page you will see the section below. Just select how many dogs you will like to take with you, and the cost will automatically be added to your basket.

take dog on eurtunnel

Your dog’s ticket will be added to your basket, so you can enter all of your details and continue to checkout.

If you have already booked your ticket, you can still add your dog to the booking. You can make amendments to your travel booking up to midnight on the day of travel.

With most bookings you can do this online using the password in your booking confirmation. However, if you paid for all or part of your booking using Tesco travel vouchers, you will need to contact Eurotunnel by phone .

Dogs are not allowed into the terminal building where the restaurants and duty free shops are located.

However, there are dedicated pet areas for your dog to stretch its legs and have a toilet break. You will find these marked in yellow throughout the terminals. You can also find an exercise area behind the fuel garage after arriving in the U.K..

All Eurotunnel pet exercise areas have complimentary dog waste bags .

Where will your dog travel while in the Eurotunnel shuttle?

Your dog must stay in the car with you for the 35 minutes you are in the Eurotunnel shuttle. Unless you are taking them to designated pet areas.

Yes. You are permitted to bring up to 5 dogs with you.

For those travelling for a competition, show, sporting or other event, you are permitted to bring up to 20 dogs with you if traveling from Calais to Folkestone. Commercial travel is not permitted from Folkestone to Calais, due to the agreement with the French Authorities.

If you wish to travel with up to 20 dogs from Calais to Folkestone, you must:

  • Sign up to Eurotunnel Pet Transporter . It can take up to 14 days for your account to become active.
  • Provide a copy of an approved Type 2 license.
  • Provide a copy of a Vehicle Approval Certificate, issued by the relevant delegated bodies in Great Britain or Northern Ireland.
  • Be registered with the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) FOR IPAFFS in Great Britain to enable notification to the UK authorities of all movement of live animals.
  • Provide a copy of your Goods Movement document, confirming your 12 digit Goods Movement Reference (GMR), required by HMRC when travelling Calais to Folkestone.

For more information check here .

In order to complete the required pre-checks, please send all documentation together with a Eurotunnel disclaimer via the Eurotunnel contact us page .

#1 Check-in

Check your dog in at least 1 hour, and no more than 2 hours before your booked departure.

If travelling from Folkestone there are automated drive through check-in gates with instructions to follow on screen. There are no pet checks, you will just need to confirm you have the dogs with you in your vehicle.

dog on eurotunnel

#2 Boarding the shuttle

Drive your car to the Departures Area and wait for your train to be called before driving onto the shuttle.

#3 On the shuttle

As mentioned above, your dog will need to stay in your vehicle while in the Eurotunnel shuttle.

  • Proof of tapeworm treatment (if traveling to UK)
  • Booking confirmation

  • Food and treats
  • Dog first aid kit
  • Travel sickness pills
  • Toothbrushes

Travelling on the Eurotunnel with a dog is very straightforward.

Just be sure to get your dog microchipped and vaccinated against rabies, at least 21 days before travel. If you are traveling from the EU you can get your dog an EU Pet Passport, and if you are traveling from Great Britain, you can obtain an Animal Health Certificate within 10 days of travel.

Subway Strays: The Dogs of Moscow’s Metro

le shuttle travelling with dogs

Despite the collapse of the Soviet Union, the stray dogs in Moscow have a surprisingly well-documented history which animal behaviorists have been paying close attention to for several decades. During the Soviet period in Russia the packs of wild (or stray) dogs in were regulated. Only the clever canines who learned to stay in isolation were able to survive. Usually, these dogs would remain on the outskirts of the city hunting in wild packs, as the living in the city was dangerous and food scarce.  After the fall of the Soviet Union quality of life in Russia began to slowly improve and with it more street vendors and food collecting in busy neighborhoods. This began to bring some the stray dogs out of the suburbs into the city.

Today, there are nearly 35,000 stray dogs that call Moscow home. Out of these 35,000 stray dogs there are about 500 that have taken to living underground. Out of these dogs, there are a few that have started thinking outside the box and inside the boxcar. They have begun the slow move underground to stay out of the cold (Russian winters reach an average of -5 degrees every day). Many of the Russian commuters embraced the dog’s underground migration by petting them or giving them food.

Though these claims may seem like the made up type of internet misinformation that we have learned to be skeptical of these days, it is actually sourced to a Russian biologist by the name of  Dr. Andrey Poyarkov , a highly regarded scientist in his field of study. As it turns out Poyarkov has been studying these dogs for the last thirty years and told news sources back in 2010 that he suspected a small fraction of these underground dogs had actually learned to use the subway in order to beg for food in bustling urban areas where food is more plentiful.

Andrei Neuronov , an animal behaviorist, says much like you train your dogs at home to respond to verbal commands like “sit” or “stay,” the Moscow metro dogs are using audio cues from the subway stops they have learned. The dogs memorize the names of the stops to navigate the subway systems in order to take them to heavily populated places during the day and get food.  Then, they return to their more secluded corners of the suburbs at night where they are less likely to be bothered by people.  Here is a story ABC did back in 2011, talking about this very thing.

Do you have any information on how to help these dogs?  Please share and comment below.
