Today marks the public launch of a special virtual tour of the historic Washington D.C. Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The tour, now available online, takes visitors on a guided journey of the interior of the temple led by Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and his wife, Lesa, along with Elder Dale G. Renlund, also of the Quorum of theTwelve Apostles, and his wife, Ruth. “A temple is the most sacred place of worship in our Church, and we are delighted that you would join us for a tour,” said Elder Renlund. The tour comes as the committee overseeing the ongoing public open house of the temple announces an important milestone: 100,000 visitors have visited the temple since it opened its doors to the public on April 18, 2022. Since that time, groups including national media outlets, invited guests from government and embassies in Washington, friends and neighbors and local members of the Church have been able to tour the interior of this landmark located just outside the nation’s capital.
“Jesus Christ is the central focus of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and our temples,” says Sister Stevenson in the video. “We regard the temple as ‘the house of the Lord.’ As you enter the temple, you will notice the beautiful paintings and other artwork that turn our hearts and thoughts towards Christ and His gospel.” This is the first opportunity in 48 years that this temple has been open to the public. The temple was originally dedicated by Church President Spencer W. Kimball in 1974. For those unable to attend in person due to scheduling or traveling constraints, this video allows the two senior Church leaders to virtually take visitors through the temple. This nearly 12-minute virtual tour is the first time the Church has made a tool of this kind available to the public since the Rome Italy Temple opened its doors in 2019. The Church has 282 temples in operation, under construction or announced around the world. Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are the most sacred places of worship. Prior to the dedication of a temple, the public is invited to attend an open house to see the beauty of the temple and learn about the commitments Church members make with Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. The Washington D.C. Temple in-person open house will continue through June 11, 2022. Open house ticket information is available at dctemple.org . See the video below.

Frequently asked questions.
This sacred building was often called the “Mormon Temple.” However, in 2018, the Prophet and President of the Church, Russell M. Nelson, offered correction to any inaccurate name of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including improper reference to the “Mormon Church.” Mormon was a great prophet, whom we honor, but the Church was named after our Savior Jesus Christ. The correct name of the Church is: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Thus, the proper name of the Temple is the “Washington D.C. Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”
The reference to “saints” in the name of the Church references the Apostle Paul’s use for people who try to follow Jesus Christ’s teachings.
In-person tours of the interior of the Washington D.C. Temple officially ended on June 11, 2022, but there are still many ways to see the temple. You can take a 360 degree virtual tour of the interior here, take the virtual tour here, or view pictures of the temple interior here . You can also see come and see the temple exterior and grounds and enjoy an inspiring reproduction of the Christus statue, interactive exhibits, activities, and events that are family friendly and free of charge at the temple visitors’ center. The visitors’ center is open to the public, year-round from 10 A.M. to 9 P.M., seven days a week.
At Christmastime, the grounds are set aglow during the Festival of Lights, which offers nightly concerts, a life-size nativity scene, and international nativity displays.

Visit our About page to learn all about why temples are built and what happens inside.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been building temples since the 1830s. Latter-day Saint temples are considered houses of God, a place of holiness and peace separate from the preoccupations of the world. They provide a place where Church members make formal promises and commitments to God. They are also the place where the highest sacraments of the faith occur — the marriage of couples and the “sealing” of families for eternity.

Watch a virtual tour of the Washington D.C. Temple led by two Latter-day Saint apostles
More than 100,000 have already toured the historic temple outside the nation’s capital.
By Trent Toone
As the Washington D.C. Temple opens its doors for public tours, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released its first virtual tour of the historic temple.
The virtual temple tour, now available online, is led by Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles and his wife, Lesa, along with Elder Dale G. Renlund , also of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles, and his wife, Ruth.
“A temple is the most sacred place of worship in our church, and we are delighted that you would join us for a tour,” Elder Renlund said.
“Jesus Christ is the central focus of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and our temples,” says Sister Stevenson in the video. “We regard the temple as ‘the house of the Lord.’ As you enter the temple, you will notice the beautiful paintings and other artwork that turn our hearts and thoughts towards Christ and His gospel.”
The release of the virtual Washington D.C. Temple tour comes as more than 100,000 visitors have already walked through the Washington D.C. Temple since tours began on April 18. National media outlets, invited guests from government and embassies in Washington, D.C., friends, neighbors and local church members have been among the groups invited to visit the renovated temple outside the nation’s capital.
This is the first time the Washington D.C. Temple has been open to the public in nearly 50 years. The temple was originally dedicated by President Spencer W. Kimball in 1974.
The virtual temple tour, nearly 12 minutes in length, allows those unable to attend in person the opportunity to watch a tour guided by two Latter-day Saint apostles. A similar tour was made available to the public during the Rome Italy Temple open house in 2019 .
There are 282 temples in operation, under construction or announced around the world.
The Washington D.C. Temple in-person open house will continue through June 11, 2022. Open house ticket information is available at dctemple.org .
