Too bored with Kuala Lumpur and want to explore new places nearby?

You are at the right place.

Having been an expat residing in KL for over 2 years, I’ve uncovered a lot of fantastic places for a short getaway from KL.

In this post, I will share with you  16 ideas for a great weekend getaway from Kuala Lumpur in Selangor and other areas that I have visited.

Read until the end to get more ideas for your bucket list.

Table of Contents

Best short getaway from KL in Selangor

Places for a day trip from kl in other areas, 1. kuala selangor.

Only less than a 2-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Selangor is the best destination for a short getaway from KL in Selangor.

In this fishing village, you will have the chance to witness mesmerizing natural phenomena such as blue tears, sky mirrors, fireflies, and beautiful sunset views during eagle feeding activity.

The only way to join these activities is to book a boat tour and here below are some reliable and cheap tour packages :

  • Eagle Feeding, Fireflies, Blue Tears: link to book
  • Sky mirror: link to book
  • Kuala Selangor tour from Kuala Lumpur: link to book

In addition, if you are a big fan of seafood, then there are tons of fresh seafood restaurants in Kuala Selangor. I have tried a few of them and highly recommend Sin Hai Ping restaurant. In this restaurant, I had crab porridge for only RM55, cheaper and fresher compared to the other place.

For more details, you can read my post: KL to Kuala Selangor trip review

2. Pulau Ketam

Pulau Ketam (which means “Crab Island”) is a small island located off the coast of Port Klang, Selangor, Malaysia. To me, it looks like Venice (Italy) at some angles because of its beautifully painted houses and turquoise waters.

Besides, Pulau Ketam is also renowned for its seafood. There is a whole heap of seafood restaurants in the local market (but the price is a little high).

To see detailed reviews about Pulau Ketam, you can watch the video above or read my post: Pulau Ketam day trip: ferry price, famous food, things to do

3. Sekinchan

Another ideal destination for a weekend getaway from Kuala Lumpur is Sekinchan – a hidden gem located approximately 100 km away from KL.

Sekinchan is known among tourists for its lush green stretches of paddy fields. Taking captivating photos with the backdrop of lush green fields and a blue sky is undoubtedly one of the best things to do here.

Furthermore, Sekinchan boasts a charming wishing tree as an additional attraction. Visitors have the opportunity to write their wishes on a red ribbon and attempt to toss it as high as they can onto the tree, with the hope that their wishes will be granted.

4. Kranching waterfall

best-staycation-in-selangor-kranching-waterfall

If you are looking for a natural short getaway from KL in Selangor, consider Kranching Waterfall – a great place for hiking or a BBQ.

There are 7 cascades of waterfalls. You can either hike to the top level or just stop at the 1 st or 2 nd level and prepare BBQ there.

Be noticed that the hiking trail in Kranching Waterfall is at a medium level of difficulty. From level 1 st to level 5 th is pretty easy, it starts to be more slippery and harder from level 6 th .

For me, I only reached level 6 th because it took me a few hours and I was pretty hungry and tired at that time.

Additionally, I observed that many people bring food for a BBQ at the base of the waterfall. It appears to be a fun and relaxing experience to have a BBQ next to a waterfall

Entrance ticket: RM5/ foreigners, RM3/ local

5. Bukit Tinggi

Known as one of the best-grade rapids in Southeast Asia, the Selangor River (Sungai Selangor) is an amazing place for a white water rafting trip which is just a 1-hour drive from KL. This is a super thrilling and exciting activity to do either with family or friends.

To join the activity, you need to join a tour with a guide. Here is the link to book the tour: Click here . The tour includes snacks, lunch, a life jacket, and all the necessary stuff for a rafting journey.

11. Farm in the city

If you are an animal lover, Farm in the City would be a perfect weekend getaway from Kuala Lumpur in Selangor for you. There are over 100 animal species ranging from pets (rabbits, guinea pigs, etc) to exotic animals (the world’s smallest horse, the world’s smallest fox – Fennec Fox, white peacock, etc).

Moreover, visitors can also visit the vegetable farm with more than 60 tropical fruit trees and rare flora.

With these provided, Farm in the City is an ideal place for families with kids to visit at the weekend where your kids can learn about animals and have fun at the same time.

And do check the weather before coming here, I came here on a rainy day and could not explore much of it.

Regarding the ticket, I bought the ticket directly at the entrance at RM58/foreigner & RM39/Mykad holder. Later on, I realized that online booking is cheaper by RM2-3… too late :(. Here is the link to book tickets online: Farm in the city ticket

12. Selangor Fruit Valley

Best Family-Friendly Hiking In Klang Valley (Level: Beginner)

Maybe you just had your baby, but the adventure bug within you is already itching and you are yearning to go for a hike.

So here is my recommendation for some of the best baby-friendly hiking trails that are fairly easy for new parents that are stroller-friendly!

Some of the trails I have personally tried it myself and genuinely enjoyed it!

1. Taman Tugu

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Siti Aminah Borhan (@sitiaminahborhan)

Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, this 66 -acre Taman Tugu is truly one of the best hiking places in KL to introduce hiking to your little one as it has several hiking trails that are stroller-friendly!

If you’re not a fan of crowds, I strongly recommend that you visit this beautiful park during the weekdays as it can get pretty crowded during weekends.

Why this place is an amazing spot:

  • One of the most well-maintained natural parks for hiking in Kuala Lumpur
  • Located within the city center
  • Highly accessible to nearby amazing cafes and restaurants in the city
  • One of the best hiking place in KL

    What you need to know:

2. Bukit Jalil Park

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Carmen Len (@carmen.len_1226)

Nestled 20 km (12 miles) away from KL city, this park combines the niceties expected of a lakeside park, including picnicking spaces, a children’s playground, exercise stations, a reflexology path for the elderly, a heliconia garden, and even a dedicated area for people with disabilities.

What’s really cool about this park with regard to “hiking” is that it also has decent trails for jogging and cycling. (which is perfect for strollers too!), making it one of the kid-friendly hiking trail in klang valley.

It’s thrilling as it isn’t completely flat all the way around, and you can breathe easy all the way as you’re engulfed in the healthy amount of foliage available there.

Look out for the unique “International Gardens” here with fun country-themed gardens of different countries so your Instagram won’t feel left out!

  • Amenities that are elderly and disabled-friendly
  • Decent trails
  • Beautiful International Gardens (an underrated Instagram story gem!)

3. KLCC Park Loop

klang valley short trip

Back to KL and who says you can’t go shopping and trail-walking at the same time? Yes, the park just outside Suria KLCC has a 1.6 km (0.9 miles) rubberized jogging track and beautiful sights of fountains and urban greenery.

The backdrop of the Twin Towers ensures your picture is Insta-worthy, making it one of the best spots for family-friendly hiking in KL , whilst carrying your shopping bag!

This place is absolutely stroller-friendly, and because the track is rubberized, injury is less likely from a fall so it’s one of the safer trails in this list.

  • Twin towers backdrops makes for great snaps
  • Shop till you put on your jogging shoes and then drop
  • Awell-maintained jogging trails that can be used for strollers

What you need to know:

4. Tun Hussein Onn Lake Loop

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Young Living Silver Leader✨ (@fauziahhashim88)

What if I told you there’s a stroller-friendly park that also has a petting zoo?

This lake features an array of birds, fish, and turtles, so you and the family can stop to feed and bask in the glorious natural setting of the lake but also feed its many wildlife.

Advice: Carry mosquito repellent when you venture here.

  • Peaceful
  • Multi-purpose
  • Unique natural setting (and wildlife) mixed with concrete facilities

5. Perdana Botanical Gardens

View this post on Instagram A post shared by M. Claira (@clairaismybeautifulname)

To call this the greenest part of Kuala Lumpur is quite simply an understatement!

This iconic garden is a whopping 220 acres of sprawling green serendipity, featuring a garden with a 2.3 km (1.4 miles) stroller-friendly trail.

What makes Perdana Botanical Garden one of the best family-friendly spots?

Well, you and your family can go for a relaxing trail walk while casually learning about Malaysia’s wildlife through its unique amenities, such as:

  • Orchid Garden
  • Hibiscus Park
  • Herbarium Perdana Botanical Garden
  • The Sunken Garden
  • National Planetarium
  • Cycad Island
  • KL Deer Park
  • Butterfly Park

*Goodness, I’m already out of breath!*

I didn’t even mention that they even have museums there! Plus, it even has a Stonehenge mockup!

Once you’re done with all that, head over to the delightful Hornbill Cafe located within the KL Bird Park for an outdoor dining experience that puts the “outdoor” in the dining experience!

This makes as one of the best spots for jungle trekking in Kuala Lumpur! (especially for a family!)

6. The Central Park @ Desa Parkcity

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Wei Jun (@mercilessjun)

Planning to work out with your family in the affluent township of Desa Park City Park?

Then go for a hike in this lovely, stroller-friendly park—which is also pet-friendly!

That’s right~!

The great thing about this place is that it also has pet-friendly facilities, making this one of the best hiking spots for families who want to hike with their pets.

It even has plenty of bikes to rent so that you can stop by these brunch spots after your workout session ( Kenny Hills Bakers and Jibby by the Park ), which are within one of the best malls in Malaysia, Waterfront Mall .

  • Plenty of pet-friendly facilities (especially for dogs)
  • Health spa and beauty salon for busy moms and dads.
  • Premium bakeries, eateries and shopping.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kit Weng Yip (@yipkitweng)

If you’re not a fan of crowded hiking spots, then be sure to check out this classic park in Subang Jaya which is located a stone’s throw away from SS15.

Don’t be fooled by this seemingly short route of 1.4 km (0.8 miles), as some of its routes has elevation. This park is no flat land, and while I’m saying it is stroller-friendly, it is also definitely more of a “hike” than most of the parks listed so far.

Again, it is still a relatively easy route for the family to enjoy.

Another thing that I like about this park is that it is also nearby some of Klang Valley’s best up-and-coming eateries in and around SS15 and SS12, such as the Crocodile Farm seafood restaurant , which is located within the park for a lakeside seafood dining experience.

  • Occasional rare animal sightings such as Otters! (Great for animal-lover kids)
  • Has wide open spaces for picnics
  • Has plenty of amenities such as a jogging track, playground etc.

Best Family-Friendly Hiking In Klang Valley (Level: Intermediate)

Fasten your seatbelts (or should I say shoelaces)…

Since this is the next level up (in terms of difficulty), it goes without saying that older kids should be able to handle these upcoming trails.

Note: I don’t recommend strollers for any of the trails listed below. (especially if you want to keep your stroller long-lasting). Alternatively, you can use a carrier instead.

Let’s start!

8. Kota Damansara Community Forest Park

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Yee Yee (@orionkoo)

Ah yes, Kota Damansara…The land of kids-friendly malls, golf courses, fun theme cafes, and a huge reserve park with intricate hiking trails for seasoned hikers?

Both locals and expats can attest, this 800-acre lowland dipterocarp forest is home to not just one or 2 or 3 trails but as many as 10 to choose from.

Located just half an hour from KL and 15 minutes from PJ , this place promises a convenient thrill ride that can be a fun time for the whole family.

Fun fact, this historical forest used to engulf much of Selangor! It is actually one of Malaysia’s oldest forest reserves , as it was first gazetted as far back as 1898.

I recommend 2 particular trails, namely the Denai 3 Puteri and Unity Peak (approximately 6 to 9 km) trails as those are the trails with the beautiful view at the peak overlooking the NKVE Highway in its entire glory for your Instagramming needs!

It may be a community forest reserve, but it’s still a forest in the wild with elevation changes and unpredictable terrain that can make your hiking session intense at times.

What makes Kota Damansara Community Forest Park one of the best family-friendly spots?

  • The community-driven initiative, as locals work actively in the conservation and research of its wildlife
  • A historical forest
  • Unpredictable terrain with excellent views for your Instagram needs
  • Conveniently nearby PJ and KL

 What you need to know:

9. Bukit Sapu Tangan

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Belle Chin (@bellechin7)

It may have a pleasant sounding name but rest assured this 6.6 km (3.3 km one way) out-and-back hiking trail in Taman Botani Negara, Shah Alam will definitely make you perspire enough to reach for a handkerchief or two! (FYI, Bukit Sapu Tangan translates to “Handkerchief Hill”).

Jokes aside, I do stress that this trail really is a good warm-up hike, thanks to its steep incline on the way to the top .

Located about 40 mins from KL , do make sure to warm up with some stretches and get those leg muscles limber and ready for the intense cardio challenge ahead.

In spite of its challenging incline, the main trail is tarred out (road trail) so it makes the experience a bit more pleasant and enjoyable with consistent terrain nestled in the natural greenery of the park.

There’s even a watchtower when you get to the top, overlooking a serene view of Shah Alam town.

  • Intense but enjoyable hiking experience
  • Nice greenery along the route
  • Watchtower overlooking Shah Alam town.

10. Bukit Ga s ing

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Nan Taro (@nantaro01)

A local favorite for a group challenge or family-friendly activity, this 4.3 km (2.7 miles) loop trail located in PJ is a direct and adventurous endeavor for friends or family amongst the slew of delicious and aromatic Indian flavors scattered around the area.

Located only 15 mins away from KL, and with sufficient parking, in the area outside the trail, it is definitely one of the more convenient trails on this list.

Just make sure to arrive early at the location as the place is known to pack a crowd, especially on the weekends.

As mentioned, the trail from the main entrance is essentially a loop meaning that you will end up where you started, making this trail among the more direct hiking routes on this list besides Bukit Sapu Tangan .

With a cool viewpoint at the top, a suspension bridge, an abandoned house, and even the novelty of being at the border between KL and Petaling Jaya . This trail is off-the-wall and has unique sights and sounds to explore.

There’s even a trail that leads to an Indian Temple at the top, in keeping with the Indian flavor of this place.

What I love about this place is that it’s challenging enough for a good workout, unique enough to get cool pictures, and conveniently placed in the pocket of Bukit Gasings’ finest Indian and con tinental restaurants for a much-needed meal after the hike.

  • Cool viewpoints along the way for nice snaps
  • An especially Indian vibe with the route, the area as well as the flavors nearby
  • One of the cool spots for hiking in KL

11. Bukit Setia Alam

View this post on Instagram A post shared by MADAM NOI (@hanishamsss)

Don’t worry, I won’t be doing comedy anytime soon but I can assure you one thing: this trail right here is certainly not a joke.

Don’t be fooled by the fact that it’s a loop trail, be wary that there are 2 different loops so plan your route carefully. It’s also about a 40 mins drive from KL.

Loops can be misleading and there are known to be a few unmarked trails so observation is key here.

On the bright side of all the potential challenges, what I really love about this place is that it’s a natural wonderland within Setia Alam.

With the beautiful view atop Peak Garden, Bukit Cherakah’s highest point (Bukit Sapu Tangan at no 2 ), the calm serenity of the community trail lake, and the clear blue skies that engulf the somewhat exposed flatlands, nature photography is definitely a must-do once you’re there!

Please be mindful of the parking situation (or lack thereof). I recommend that you arrive early and try to find somewhere near Petron Setia Alam for parking and from there will be about an 800-meter (0.5 miles) walk to the starting point.

  • Challenging, adventurous trail
  • A beautiful and natural wonderland
  • Not just insta snap worthy but also serious photographer snaps worthy

12. Broga Hill

View this post on Instagram A post shared by manjot kaur (@manjxtt)

Located 45 mins from KL, this place is an iconic spot for hiking.

This is most of Klang Valley’s first foray into the hiking conversation in pop culture and it shows…Even if you’ve never hiked before, you’ve definitely heard of Broga Hill.!

At 400-meters above sea level, 3.2 kilometers (2 miles) back and forth with 3 different peaks , the route toward the different peaks is fairly direct, easy even! Follow the clearly marked route and you’re good to go.

The muddy and slippery terrain makes for an intense ride down and a very painful slip and slide if one is not careful.

I recommend the following;

  • hiking shoes with good grip
  • first-aid kit
  • hiking pole if needed

Also, a fair crowd warning is in order, as this place packs a party. What I love though about this place is a particular challenge among adventurers of Broga which is to “catch the sunrise”.

Depending on the weather, hikers usually get up as early as 4 or 5 am to reach the top of Broga Hill to marvel at the sunrise over the hill, which has been a huge hit on Instagram over the years.

  • Relatively short route
  • “Catching the sunrise” can be a highly rewarding activity

13. Bukit Kiara Hill

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Aliyyah Mohammad (@natureisourteacher)

Bukit Kiara is yet another in the “uncanny-valley” series of trails that happen to exist alongside very affluent areas ala Kota Damansara Community Forest Park.

In this case, I find myself in the pocket of Mont Kiara and TTDI, about 20 minutes from KL.

You’d be wrong if you thought this trail was as smooth as a cruising Aston Martin!

I recommend the Ayuria Kiaramas Loop , at 4.7 kilometers (2.9 miles) and approximately 1 and a half hours to complete , the distance is just half the story.

The trail is popular amongst bikers, so be careful if you hear a biker coming down your path and terrain can be shifty . There are also 3 different routes so plan your adventure carefully. Much like Bukit Gasing , the landmarks in the route are prime photography content!

Don’t worry though, overall, it’s a relatively safe and fun excursion for the whole family. The best part of all is that when you’re done, you’re in TTDI, so you may as well tuck into the many popular cafes nearby after a tiring hike!

Why this place is an amazing spot

  • Conveniently nearby KL and M ont Kiara in TTDI
  • A dichotomy of nature and “boujee” lifestyle cafes and eateries
  • Surprising wildlife (from tortoise, monkeys, etc)  to stumble upon!
  • One of the best spot for jungle trekking in KL
View this post on Instagram A post shared by KLpizzazz (@klpizzazz)

Located just 20 mins from KL, this may be the final entry on the Intermediate level, but it’s certainly not the least Intermediate. Basically, this won’t be an easy ride.

At 6.1 kilometers (3.8 miles) and approximately 2 hr 30 min to complete this trail, it’s not exactly a short hike with its 458 meters elevation gain.

A feature of this hill is also that it’s surrounded by a lake , which brings us to one of the most grueling aspects of this trail….. leeches! Crawling with them in almost every step.

  • Hiking socks (to avoid leech bites)

However, it’s only a moderately challenging endeavor and can still be an afternoon of fun for the family.

  • Challenging but serene and beautiful. (mostly untouched)
  • Has a nice photography spot
  • Features a beautiful mini waterfall!

Best Family-Friendly Hiking In Klang Valley (Level: Advanced)

group of people hiking

We’re getting into the big leagues now with these advanced trails for hiking klang valley.

I strongly advise either experienced hikers or families with kids above 16 years of age to participate on these hiking spots in Klang Valley…BUT…

If you are already a pro-hiker who just recently had your baby (congratulations, btw!), then be sure to check out these gravity-defying hiking trails by using a strong, supportive baby-carrier that are hiking-friendly!

Let’s hike UP!

15. Gunung Nuang

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dickson Tham (@dickson.ts)

Located about 1 hour+ from KL , let’s kick things off with Selangor’s third highest peak , Gunung Nuang at 1493 meters (4898 ft) high and the first of the mountains in this list.

Stretching across a village, a river, and a camp before reaching the point at which the hike towards the peak begins, it’s no wonder some have suggested that this mountain is even more difficult to climb than Mount Kinabalu!

It is recommended to start the journey early, as overall it can take from 11 to 12 hours, depending on the walking speed and frequency of rest.

  • Challenging route (great for advance hikers!)
  • It is one of Selangor’s third highest mountain
  • Relatively easy to register and affordable parking

16. Rawang Bypass Trail

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mohamad Shaiful Bahren Sharuddin (@epolmrtrex)

A quaint trail for hiking kuala lumpur, located near Rawang, that has grown in popularity over the past few months especially on social media and it’s easy to see why.

Located about 40 minutes from KL,   it’s a unique trail in that it literally goes around and then across the Rawang-Serendah Highway !

Tackling this trail is a whole other story,, as some of the inclines are so steep, ropes are needed just to scale certain parts of the trail! The route is also not for the faint of heart or those afraid of heights, as it cuts across the side of Rawang Bypass highway ( one of Malaysia’s second highest highway at 58.2 meters (190ft)

At only 3.9 kilometers (2.4 miles) an entire loop, this trail really packs a punch, considering coming down is even more intense than the way up due to its particularly slippery terrain.

There’s more than enough parking at the designated space at the beginning of the trail.

  • Overlooking view of Malaysia’s second-highest highway (Rawang Bypass)
  • Plenty of routes to explore
  • Unique Cement Tunnel to explore (perfect for the gram)

17. Gunung Hitam

View this post on Instagram A post shared by HASRRUL (@bahteratimurr)

Another Hulu Langat entry on this list is 55 mins from KL, you can find parking at a designated area between Kampung Ulu Lui and Kampung Paya Lebar.

There’s more convenient parking in the Forest Reserve area, although it is highly recommended for adventurers to use a 4-wheel drive vehicle as the terrain here is rocky, uneven, and not exactly friendly to vehicles with lower suspension!

The surprising bit about this adventure though is that it really isn’t as scary as its namesake! Gunung Hitam directly translates to “Black Mountain” – and no I can’t guarantee a Disney villain isn’t already staying there!

At about 11 to 12 km back and forth, it sits pretty average on this list in terms of distance, added to the fact that there are signboards aplenty, so you’re not likely to lose your way here either.

The killer factor here that lands it on this list is the extreme incline up closer to the peak. In fact, it is about an entire kilometer of uninterrupted steep climbing! (Definitely not for the hiking novice.)

  • Challenging 1km sharp incline
  • Plenty of signage (so easy not to get lost)
  • One of the most challenging routes for hiking klang valley

18. Lata Medang Waterfall

View this post on Instagram A post shared by 𝐌𝐄𝐆𝐀𝐓 𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐑𝐈𝐒 𝐈𝐒𝐊𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐀𝐑 (@theayisharris)

This waterfall hiking spot finally makes a debut on this list, though it is also not exactly a walk in the park to get to!  Or should I say walk in the mountains?

Located in Kuala Kubu Baru, about 1 and a half hours from KL, be mindful that a hiking permit is needed to be presented in advance before starting your hike.

This place is also essentially in an orang asli settlement and RM1 payment is expected upon parking. You may park at Tapak Berkelah Sungai Pertak or if there’s no space left you may go to Bukit Kutu parking .

The way up and back down is about 2 hours each and cuts across Lubuk Mercu waterfall also so you have an option to chill a bit here before resuming the walk to Lata Medang, although it’s really just a 5 min trek from Lubuk Mercu.

What I love about this place is that it has beautiful cascading waterfalls and a natural river (water splashing fun)!

An intense and arduous trip up but rewarded with breathtaking sights and refreshing cold ice water hitting all the right spots in your body. Now THAT’s a hike!

For adventurous hikers with pets, consider this another pet-friendly spot for hiking, Klang valley as there are several wild-friendly dogs that roam nearby the route and trailhead! (Good spot for your furry members to make new friends)

Ultimately, it is one of the best trails for jungle trekking in Selangor.

Advice: Please check the weather forecast before visiting this location, as it can be dangerous during the monsoon season.

  • A refreshing place for nice dip in nearby waterfalls
  • Luscious scenery from the landscape
  • There’s a small bridge when crossing the river
  • Plenty of friendly dogs to hike together

19. Gunung Irau

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Myzaa Sha’eb (@officialmyzaa)

Cameron Highlands is a place to relax and unwind, but if you have a hunger for something a bit more intense, look no further than Gunung Irau here in Mossy Forest.

Located about 3 and a half hours from KL, this adventure is best experienced with a tour group as you may need to navigate through the Mossy Forest.

Important : Do apply for a hiking permit in advance (to avoid any issues with authority)

Keeping in mind that this is an intense hike, I can’t stress enough how much a good camera is needed for this adventure. With its lush natural surroundings, walking here feels like you’re in the world of The Lord of the Rings.

Also, its goes without saying that thicker clothing may be helpful  for this hike as temperatures can drop below 20 or 22 degrees Celsius (especially during the monsoon season.)

  • Unique landscape (Perfect for your Instagram shot!)
  • Interesting flora abound
  • Cold chilly weather

       What you need to know:

20. Gunung Besar Hantu

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Billy Chan (@billiezai_330)

Gunung Besar Hantu, a name on this list that already sends shivers down my spine, literally translates to “Big Ghost Mountain” or “Big Mountain Ghost,” which doesn’t do much to calm the nerves!

Gunung Besar Hantu is the tallest mountain in Negeri Sembilan at 1462 meters (4796 feet) which is relatively low, considering it is one of the top 10 highest mountains in Malaysia .

However, this place, located in Taman Negeri Kenaboi in Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan, is about 1 a half hour drive from KL.

You very quickly go through a path of slippery muddy trails, bumpy random elevations, and relentless paths of tall grass and thorny weeds. Beware of the leeches in the area, as it is moist due to its proximity to Lata Kijang waterfall .

Even getting to the trailhead is a challenge on its own as it takes an experienced driver with a 4-wheel drive vehicle. For these reasons, I highly recommend booking a tour group in advance. A hiking permit can be obtained on-site at RM 5 (1.06 USD )

This is on top of the fact that there are even other activities available there such as birdwatching, caving, tubing, and other mountain trails! You may click here to find out more.

  • Has fun activities besides hiking (i.e. caving, tubing, birdwatching & etc.)
  • It has plenty of amenities for visitors; (i.e. toilet facilities, chalet, dorm, canteen, campsite, multi-purpose hall, etc.)
  • One of the most challenging hikes near Klang Valley
View this post on Instagram A post shared by FIND YOUR TRIBE | KAKI VENTURE (@findyourtribe_movement)

I’ve saved the best for last with another waterfall. In fact, there are not one, not 2, but 7 levels of waterfalls !

Located just 24km (15 miles) from KL, this place promises to be one of Klang Valley’s best family-friendly hiking trails where you can find yourself on a challenging route and be rewarded with water-splashing fun at the end.

Please keep in mind that this difficult trail is only for advanced hikers (which are accessible above the main waterfall), which is why it is ranked this high on this list.

The hike up after the second level becomes strenuous as the incline approaches vertical and you’re hiking alongside the waterfall, which means very slippery slopes. Luckily, there are ropes to cling to, so keep an eye on your step and wear appropriate footwear.

I assure you one thing, though, every view of the seven levels is something to behold in memory. Be sure to take a picture of at least one of the viewpoints.

What makes Kanching Eco Forest Park one of the best family-friendly spots?

  • Challenging for different levels (beginner to advanced depending on the waterfall levels)
  • Can be fun for the whole family as the first 2 waterfalls are easy and the children can come along
  • Fun playing in the cold chilly waterfalls
  • 7 different viewpoints (7 levels) = 7 different angles of snaps!
  • One of the best spots for jungle trekking in Kuala Lumpur!

Kids can start hiking at any time, from baby to teen. So far, I find hiking with babies fairly easy as they’ll likely cling to you most of the time

How Long Is Bukit Kiara Trail?

Bukit Kiara Trail is 2.8-mile out-and-back trail located near Kuala Lumpur. It is considered one of the easier hiking routes, though it takes an average of 1 hour and 24 minutes to complete. If you like to do other activities such as bird watching, hiking, and mountain biking, then Bukit Kiara is certainly one of the best spots to go!

How Do You Start Hiking For Beginners?

  • Start simple and pick the appropriate trail according to your fitness level.
  • Try to learn and remember the trail .
  • Monitor the weather.
  • Inform someone of your whereabouts.

Is Broga Hill Hard To Climb?

It’s actually one of the easier places to climb, and in fact, there are plenty of directions and the path is direct as well, so getting lost is very unlikely. However, one must exercise caution as the terrain can be slippery.

The Bukit Kiara’s Trail start at the eastern end of the parking lot. The trails lead right to Kiara Forest, as well as to the guardhouse and park area, which is reached by a paved path. This is the guardhouse at Kiara Hill Walk’s main entrance. In fact, there are several ways to get to Kiara trails from the park/paved walkway.

Well there you have it, 21 family-friendly hiking in Klang Valley for you and your family to enjoy!

The concrete jungle can be a fun time out, but something closer to nature is not only important for our children, but it can also be a fun way for the family to bond and get fit together.

I hope this list will help you get the thrills, and re-activate your adventurous life for your next travel trip with your family!

Fraser's Hill

Fraser’s Hill is one of Malaysia’s most unexpectedly satisfying short-stay destinations. Navigating up the tight twists and turns of the road to this hill station is a stimulating experience – in fact the uphill road is so narrow that the final eight kilometre stretch is limited to one-way traffic at any time. The direction changes every hour; odd hours are for ascending the hill, while even hours have been denoted for descending traffic.

klang valley short trip

With a majority of its buildings featuring mock Tudor-style architecture, Fraser’s Hill hasn’t changed much from its days as a British colonial hill resort. Besides the essential photo stop opportunity at Fraser’s Clocktower, a hard-to-miss clock tower which stands in the old English village square, you can head on down to Allen’s Water, a former reservoir turned into a boating and fishing attraction.

Akin to a tiny Scottish hamlet, Fraser’s Hill is one of Malaysia’s premier locations for bird-watching. Avid bird watchers can take advantage of the fact that Fraser’s is home to over 250 species of birds – the Fraser’s Hill Development Corporation and the World Wildlife Fund both run classes and excursions to see the flora and wildlife of the hill station. What's more, the Fraser’s Hill International Bird Race – a contest to document the vast variety of birdlife on the mountainside – is typically held here in June.

klang valley short trip

Spread across seven densely forested hills, Fraser’s Hill – situated 103 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur – is Malaysia’s most undeveloped hill station. Dotted with a mix of granite mock-Tudor bungalows and modern complexes, this tiny Scottish-style hamlet is one of the country’s premier locations for bird-watching. It attracts only a fraction of the visitors of Gentings or Cameron Highlands, yet there are plenty of accommodation options and weekends often see the hill station swarming with visitors.

Sitting on a portion of the Selangor/Pahang border, Fraser’s Hill’s focal point is the tiny village at the end of the golf course and its main attractions is its verdant landscape as well as abundant flora and wildlife. When the sun goes down, it goes without saying that this sleepy station doesn’t feature much nightlife – in point of fact, most people who turn up here prefer to turn in early for the night in order to be up early the next day.

Home to 265 species of birdlife, one of the high points in Fraser’s calendar is the International Bird Race – a competition in which teams of bird spotters vie to record the highest number of species on the hill station. Meanwhile, if truth be told, retail therapy options are pretty thin on the ground up at this hill station – if you’re looking for souvenirs and other knick knacks, head on down to KL.

klang valley short trip

Fraser’s Hill’s ‘alpine’ location has cooler temperatures than the rest of the country and as a result it is a popular retreat amongst naturalists and bird watchers. Featuring family-friendly jungle treks with rewarding views, the hillside is also a popular spot with hikers; there are eight nature walk trails available ranging from easy to hard. Try the Maxwell Trail – a short and easy hike that lets you enjoy the cool mountain air – or the six-kilometre Pine Tree Trail – a longer trail that takes you past some dramatic views and ends near the Jeriau Waterfall, the perfect spot for an afternoon swim. The 18-foot waterfall is located about five kilometres from the town centre and has a well-managed picnic area with pathways and shelters in the surrounding lush tropical forest. Fraser’s also plays host to the Royal Fraser’s Hill Golf Course – a nine-hole green that is one of Malaysia’s oldest. There’s also a paddock at the eastern edge of the course where you can saddle up for a horse riding session for very little money.

Why Have the Same Holiday as Everyone Else?

What to Do in Klang, Malaysia – on a One Day Trip.

Sharing is caring!

Located about 60 miles south of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, the city of Klang is an easy day trip from KL. It’s also a stop off for many cruise ships – and remarkably satisfying to say, but the big question is what to do in Klang once you get there? Here are some answers…

Klang City reflected in the towns river

  • My First Experience of Klang

I have no idea what is currently happening.

It’s just before lunchtime and I’m sitting on a blue plastic chair in a ramshackle restaurant in a backstreet in Klang.

I’ve just ordered food but the waitress has brought my cutlery over in a bowl and is now pouring tea from the teapot on it!

She then refills my teapot, leaves the cutlery soaking in the bowl – grins and walks away.

I’m obviously looking very confused as one of the old uncles sipping his own tea at the next table tells me ‘clean’ – and then I understand.

Good tea in Chinese culture (and Malaysia has a strong Chinese culture) doesn’t come from the first water poured on the leaves. Instead, you pour a little water on them, rinse them and throw the first pour away – however, that tea is boiling – and so, pouring it over the cutlery sterilises it from any germs that might have been leftover from washing it in the local water.

klang valley short trip

I’m not sure whether they do it for every customer or just the Westerners, but it was not the only surprise I was going to find on my day trip to Klang.

The cool little town surprised me at every turn.

So, if you’re wondering whether you should go to Klang on a day trip from KL. If you’re not sure if it’s worth visiting the town as an excursion if you come into the cruise centre at nearby Port Klang. Of, if you’re pretty sure you fancy a day trip and want to know what places to visit in Klang when you get there – try out our one day guide.

Fun Things to do in Klang

Eat bak kut teh, go see the bird art, check out the jewels, take the heritage walk, meet the fortune-telling parrot, see the cute fire station, walk across the old bridge., visit the snake temple, visit the blue tears, take a trip to crab island, getting to klang from kuala lumpur, getting to klang from your cruise ship, sharing is caring.

There isn’t one big attraction in Klang – there’s no shiny Petronas Towers looming over the city like there is in Kuala Lumpur, instead, it’s a great place to wander around looking at the old faded buildings, poking your noses in the small local shops and trying the local food.

Which is pretty much what we did.

So with that in mind, here’s what we did during our one day in Klang (plus three things we didn’t have time for but that you might want to add to your ‘where to go in Klang’ list.)

Faded old building in Klang with birds stuck on it.

Bak Kut Teh is probably the most famous local dish in Klang. This was what I had ordered for lunch before my strange tea experience.

It’s not the most photogenic dish as you’ll see below, but omg, it was delicious.

Bak Kut Teh is basically a pork stew seasoned with spices including cinnamon and star anise. The broth is clear but incredibly rich in flavour and the meat just falls off the bone.

Bowls of Bak Kuh Tek, rice and tea soaking cutlery in Klang, Malaysia

We ordered ours from a shop close to Klang station called Teck Teh Bak Kut Teh at 27 Jalan Stesen.

This restaurant has apparently been around for over 50 years and is still using the traditional stew recipe from way back when.

It looks like it has a lot of regulars And they couldn’t have been more welcoming.

The staff were smiley, even though we had no idea what we were ordering, and once they realised, the uncles at the table next door helped us get our meat on the bone, explained what was going on with the tea and had a bit of a chat about why we were in Klang.

The bathroom does need a little bit of attention though so you might want to skip that bit!

But, as you’ll see shortly, this helped add another surprise to our Klang trip.

Food Lovers Tour Suggestion

If you like Bak Kut Teh, you might want to check out one of the local tours, the Klang Heritage Walking Tour – and Cooking Class which includes a walk around Klang and then, the opportunity to learn how to make Bak Kut Teh yourself with a local chef.

See more about it or book the tour here.

Directly opposite the restaurant was a car park that had a wall of cool street art with birds on – but, it was only once I turned down another alley just behind it, I realised that birds are actually a theme for street art in Klang.

Mural of birds sitting on a window

The alley behind the car park (next to a shop called Sephan Awake) is lined with different bird paintings.

Apparently, Klang is home to a quite sizeable black crow community and so the city commissioned a whole load of paintings to honour them.

And yes, they also do, occasionally, have an event where people shoot them to keep the numbers down, but honestly, they love them really.

Mural of black and green birds in Klang, Malaysia

There’s also another cool piece of street art on Jalan Stesen just by the Biz Hotel. Look for the phone box.

Oh, and if street art is your thing, and you’re also going to Penang on your Malaysia trip, you might want to nip over to this piece on Penang’s lesser-known street art – there are some seriously cool murals to be found.

After Mr Differentville had been in the restaurant bathroom and come out muttering ‘you do not want to go in there’, I was in a bit of a predicament – I needed to go in there!!

I’d drunk a lot of that tea the nice lady made me.

Things were just getting a bit desperate when we passed a museum. Museums have bathrooms and, as this one also had no entrance fee, I decided to go in and find it.

It felt rude just to go in and use the bathroom though and so we also went in for a wander – and what was inside was one of the other fantastic surprises Klang had in store.

The museum in question is the Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery.

It highlights the history and lifestyle of Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah who was Sultan of Selangor for 39 years and King of Malaysia for two – and it is full of THE most amazing jewels, trinkets and treasures.

I’m not really a museum person but this was definitely a great place to visit.

If you only do one thing in Klang from this list, go to the Royal Gallery.

It’s open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm.

Sadly, you aren’t allowed to take photos and so I can’t show you any pictures.

If you’re in Klang on a Saturday, a guided walk departs from the Royal Gallery at 9-9.15 showing you some of the history of Klang.

It takes about 2.5 hours.

It starts at the Royal Gallery and includes nine historic buildings in and around Klang City centre.

These include the former Chartered Bank Building, the Royal Klang Club, Klang Convent School, the Tengku Kelana Indian Muslim Mosque and the Sri Nagara Thendayuthapani Temple.

Mosque and firestation in Klang

You need to pre-register for the walk the week before your visit. Find the details on how to do that here .

If you’re not there at the weekend, you can find a list of the buildings via the link above and map them on google maps.

Most of them have plaques outside telling you their history and why they are so important.

This was my whole reason for wanting to go to Klang.

The parrot works from the Little India section of Klang.

Apparently, he will draw a card from a tarot pack which his helper will then interpret for you.

Parrot sitting by a palmistry sight

Sadly, the day I went his human helper was not in the mood to talk to me and totally ignored me when I appeared, so I’m not sure exactly what news the feathery one would have conveyed.

You might be luckier.

The good news is that Klang’s Little India is still a fun place to wander for half an hour, parrot fortunes or no parrot fortunes.

You’ll find it on Jalan Tengku Kelana.

Little India Tour Suggestion

If you want to learn more about Klang’s Little India, you might want to check out this tour of the area.

It actually picks you up from Subang Jaya which is just outside of Klang (although you might be able to arrange to meet them in Klang).

It shows you around Little India, and many of the other ideas in this post. I also note that Bird Fortune Telling fees are not included in the price, which leads me to believe, that our feathered friend here is on the itinerary.

See more about it here.

This is one of the buildings on the Heritage Tour, but if you’re not going on that, then at least make a stop at this cute fire station.

The original building has been here since the 1890s but it’s had a bit of a red and white makeover and looks super cute.

Fire station in Klang

There is also a fire museum inside.

Klang is actually quite a large city and the north of the town is located on the other side of the Klang River.

Due to half the roads in Klang being dug up when we visited we got a bit lost and walked onto the Tengku Kelana bridge from which you at least get a good view of the gold-domed Masjid Bandar Diraja Klang.

Image: Hafiz Mustapha/Depositphotos.com

I was however supposed to be on the old double-decker Kota Bridge from which the view is even better!

I didn’t shoot the picture above (mine was rubbish) but I’m pretty sure it was shot from the Kota Bridge.

Plus, it’s a cool old bridge – by the time you read this all the work should be done and you might find it a bit easier to navigate around.

At this point, our Klang day trip was over – it was my birthday and I needed to get back to Kuala Lumpur for a night at the Helipad Bar , but, if I’d had more time, there were three other things to do in Klang I wanted to check out – and that you also might want to try.

The Tian Hock Kung Temple is a temple slightly outside of the old part of Klang and famous for its decorative snake sculptures.

A few live snakes also live in the temple, but unlike the snake temple we visited in Penang a few days later, they aren’t just snoozing around the place but in cages.

If you want to visit Tian Hock Kung, you’ll need to take a taxi or a Grab as it’s not that easy to get to, and a bit too far to walk from Klang centre – that’s one reason why it went off my list of where to go in Klang.

That, and I knew I was going to the other snake temple in Penang later that week – and if you want to see pics of that, check out this post

If you think this sounds fun, but you don’t want to have to find this post again to do it, why not check out the tour we made with FreeApps. Just click on the picture below and it’ll take you to the tour.

If you don’t have to hurry back to Kuala Lumpur, this might be a great way to extend your Klang Day Trip into the early evening

Close to Klang is the habitat of some fireflies, and river of blue algae that glows at night.

klang valley short trip

I didn’t get the chance to check this out as I had to be back in KL, but, if you can stay later, then you can book a tour that includes a walk around Klang followed by a trip to the fireflies and the bioluminesence.

See more about the tour here.

Officially known as Pulau Ketam, this traditional island is a short train, then ferry ride away from Klang.

All cute fishing boats and houses on stilts, my original plan was to go here before going to Klang but I soon discovered if you have to be back in KL for late afternoon (and don’t get up at 6am like you planned!) this might have to be an either/or outing as combining the trains from Kuala Lumpur with the ferries to the island – and getting back to Klang to explore – means a long day out.

If you want to try it though, You can also book a day trip from KL to Palau Ketam. I might try that next time I go as I really want to see it.

Click here to check out the tour.

Or, if you’re a more independent soul. you can do the journey yourself.

You get the train to the last stop on the Kommuter Line at Pelabuhan Klang (see the link to the timetable below). You’ll find the port over the road from the station and there are two ferry companies going to the island.

Here’s the timetable for boats to Palau Ketam on Ali Baba Cruises.

This website gives the other ferry timetable .

I’m not sure what that company is called, but it seems pretty easy to navigate the port once you get there – it’s not huge.

Woman standing in alley with murals in Klang, Malaysia

Where is Klang? And How Do You Get There

As I said, it’s a short day trip south of Kuala Lumpur. It’s easily reached by the KTM Kommuter train from KL Sentral station in about 90 minutes, and Klang station is walking distance from pretty much everything in this day trip.

The trains run fairly regularly and you can check out the timetable here.

If you are going to Kuala Lumpur you’ll want to read out guide to fun and unusual things to do in KL before you get there.

The other way you might come to Klang is via a cruise ship docked at Port Klang.

Port Klang is the port used when cruises come into Kuala Lumpur and most people take either an excursion or self-guided trip into KL itself (if you would like to do that you can book a Port Klang to KL transfer in advance here).

If you’ve already been to Kuala Lumpur or, don’t really want to go all that way, Klang makes a good short side trip. From what I can gather, there’s not a lot of things to do in Port Klang itself.

To get to Klang from the cruise ship terminal you’ll need to get a taxi from the Bousted Cruise Centre where you will dock to Pelabuhan Klang station (a 20-minute drive) from which it’s just six stops, or 20 minutes to Klang. You could also take a cab the whole way to Klang. It’s about 40 minutes drive from the Boustead cruise centre.

So there you have it. A few suggestions of what to do in Klang. There are probably a few more attractions in the part of town over the other side of the river, but if you only have one day, this will be enough to keep you busy.

And if that parrot does decide to do any work, please let me know what he says.
