Establishing a goal for each run (even if it’s just to not walk!) creates benchmarks of your progress and a sense of accomplishment. “I used telephone poles when I was getting started,” says Feller. “Each time I ran, I told myself to make it to ‘one more pole.’” Eventually, you might find yourself setting even crazier goals, says Elizabeth Maiuolo of Running and the City, “like running over all of the NYC bridges or covering three different parks in one run.”

“Don’t even think about pace at the beginning,” says Amanda Loudin, the voice behind Miss Zippy. “Many people get discouraged at first because they want to run ‘fast.’ So they go out and kill themselves, then feel dejected and discouraged.” Coach Ryan Knapp of Out and Back emphasizes running at a conversational pace, meaning you should be able to talk on-the-go. While it may go against the “No pain. No gain.” mentality, it “ensures you are building your aerobic endurance and teaching your body to become more efficient, which is the key to running,” he says.

Yes, it can be isolating to run alone, but we say there’s plenty of road to share. “Ask a friend you haven’t seen in a while to run with you,” says Jocelyn Bonneau, better known as Enthusiastic Runner. “Catch up while running and the miles will fly by as you chat!” Julie Curtis of ROJ Running adds that your date could also be a romantic one. “Studies have shown couples who run together, stay together,” she says. “Take your crush out for a little jog or reignite passion in your long term relationship. That post-workout glow could lead to a few  more  calories burned — if you know what I’m saying.”

Treat Yourself

We hate to sound shallow, but sometimes there’s nothing like some new gear to get us going. “A flashy training outfit will make me want to run faster and longer,” admits Maiuolo. Michelle Roos of Pawsitively Delightful also abides by this approach. “If I have time (and money), I will buy either a new pair of shorts or a tank that will act as a reward for all of the hard work that I’ve done up until then,” she says. “If it’s something I know I’ll want to race in later, I can test it out!”

Maybe running isn’t for everyone, but you won’t know until you try — and these are some ways to at least have fun while doing so. But according to Feller, the best tip we can offer is to power through. “When you’re getting started, the fight is as much mental as it is physical,” she says. “You want running to be fun right away? I assure you, it’s not going to be. But once you can find the mental strength to push through the initial tough ones, the runs that follow will truly be a blast.”

Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu 4 days

Peru - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Machu Picchu, an ancient Inca city in the Andes of Peru

You might only know about Machu Picchu , but the fabled city is just the beginning. Peru was once home to a thriving pre-Columbian civilization that dominated the region before the Spanish. The Incas were responsible for creating some of the most beautiful archaeological wonders, combining striking architecture on the land of great natural beauty. To this day, Peru retains its alluring and enchanting features that were carved by the ancient Incas.

Tour Highlights

  • Hike the Inca Trail , or its other famous alternative routes like the Lares Trek or Salkantey Trek .
  • Visit Machu Pichhu
  • Go sandboarding in the Peruvian desert
  • Look for macaws in the Amazon jungle
  • Explore the deep canyons of Colca
  • Visit the floating islands of Lake Titicaca
  • Trek the Cordillera Blanca, the highest range of the Peruvian Andes

Travel Tips

  • Machu Picchu can become very crowded during high season. Beat the crowds by staying nearer the site the night before your visit, and be sure to book your tickets ahead of time to avoid disappointment.
  • Stores often shut down for the afternoon siesta, so always plan your meals in advance.
  • It's advisable to not drink the tap water. Many hotels provide bottled water, which should also be used for brushing your teeth.
  • Altitude sickness can be a real issue for some people visiting Peru. Try combatting it with coca leaf tea, a Peruvian remedy that is readily available across the country. Chewing the leaves can have the same effect.
  • On a holiday to Peru, don't skip a visit to Lima . Peru's largest city is often overlooked for hotspot tourist destinations but is full of great food and interesting museums that you'll regret missing out on.
  • Always carry cash when travelling through Peru as many shops will not accept credit cards.

Peru has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Peru before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Peru, do check out our Peru Travel Guide for more information.

Peru - Top Destinations to Visit

  • Summit Machu Picchu : The pièce de resistance of Peru has to be the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu. One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the 15th-century archaeological site is a sight to behold and should not be missed. One of the most popular ways to get there is a multi-day trek along the Inca Trail from the city of Cusco. Another exciting way to head to the citadel is on a two-hour train ride from the Sacred Valley town of Ollantaytambo. The best time to visit the magical city is in April and May when the rainy season has passed, and the surrounding mountains are vivid.
  • Discover the Sacred Valley :  Once the beating heart of the Incan Empire, the Sacred Valley is still a magical place to explore. The valley is home to quaint villages, and ancient archaeological sites, and is, of course, the gateway to Machu Picchu. If you are not sure whether you should be looking for a budget tour, a luxury tour, or perhaps a completely customized tour, check all our Peru tours at the top of this page. Peru is an amazing country to visit, and there may be other key factors that you wish to consider before traveling. So please check our “ Peru travel guide ” that offers a lot of relevant information about traveling to the country.

Tours in Peru - Questions and Answers

The best time to visit Peru is between the months of May and September. Corresponding with the dry season, temperatures in the country at this time hover between 16°C to 22°C. But more importantly, traveling to Peru during this time means that there is little fear of getting caught in the country’s torrential monsoon. Another less popular but still good time to visit Peru is between October and December. A shoulder period between dry and monsoon seasons, the climate during this time of year is generally fine, although skies are cloudier and you might have to dodge the odd shower. The wettest months are January and February. It is still possible to visit destinations such as Lake Titicaca during the rainy season, but the Inca Trail is closed for travelers. Find more information here .

Given its wealth of attractions, there are many reasons why you should consider Peru trips that last between ten days and two weeks . This will give you enough time to see top-rated sites, such as Manu National Park, while also discovering the country’s history and culture in more far-flung and as-yet-unknown destinations. You can still take in a number of attractions even if you can only spare one week in Peru , however, the time constraint would mean that you will have to limit your exploration to a destination or two. For a more detailed rundown, check out our travel guide on how many days to spend in Peru .

Personal contact is an important part of Peruvian culture. Not only do Peruvians tend to stand closer to each other than you might at home, but physical contact (especially on one’s arms and back) is also common. You should avoid the desire to step away, as this is considered offensive. Greetings are important, with handshakes along with a few words of greeting being common. Give the elderly your respect if you are young and leave your seat on public transportation for them.

If you live close to sea level, then you will realize what a significant effect higher elevations can have on your body upon arriving in Cusco. Doctors recommend at least two days of acclimatization before considering any strenuous activities, such as going for the popular two or four-day hikes to Machu Picchu. A nice way to spend this time would be by exploring the historic center of Lima or taking one of the many less-demanding day hikes that are available in the country. If you plan on trekking, you can read our article on the ultimate trekking guide in Peru .

You should ensure you are up to date with any vaccinations that are standard in your home country, such as those providing protection against tetanus and measles. A medical professional may suggest boosters for these vaccinations. Other diseases they may suggest vaccinations for are hepatitis B, diphtheria, and rabies, all of which are potentially deadly. Yellow fever, transmitted by mosquitoes, is a risk in the country’s east. There is a risk of malaria in the country’s northeast, around Iquitos and the Peruvian Amazon. Since there is currently no vaccination against this disease, prophylactic drugs are recommended. Find more information here .

Peru is not expensive for travelers and we recommend it as a top pick for visitors on a budget . Most travelers can get by on USD 30 to USD 40 per day, including transport, accommodation, and food. Tackling the Inca Trail and exploring Machu Picchu are must-do attractions but also relatively costly. ATMs are the quickest way to withdraw neuvos soles, as the country’s currency is called, on the road and visa cards are easily accepted. Many ATMs have an English language option, too. They can be found in some airports, inside banks, and as stand-alone units in major towns and cities. If you are looking for other destinations to visit on a budget, find more information here .

Spanish is the most-spoken European language in Peru, alongside several local languages like Quechan and Aymara. Those involved in the tourism industry and those in popular destinations such as Lima and Cusco will speak some English, while guides leading tours for English-speaking travelers will have a good hold of the language. However, knowing a few words of Spanish is always useful.

Do Inca Expert tours have specific start dates?

No, our Peru tours can start any day of the year. Our trips are fully customizable; you can choose the start and end date of your trip, the specific destinations you want to see, the hotels you prefer, and the tours you want for a unique experience.

How much time do I need to see Peru?

Give yourself at least 4 days in Peru to avoid being affected by altitude sickness when visiting Machu Picchu. Most visitors exploring the iconic sites of Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu spend between 7 - 10 days in Peru. If you want to add destinations like the Amazon Rainforest, Lake Titicaca, Arequipa, or the Nazca Lines, allot 2-4 days for each destination depending on the destinations and tours you want.

How do I get to Machu Picchu?

After arriving at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport, take an hour and a half flight from Lima to the city of Cusco. In Cusco, a scenic train ride will transfer you 3 hours and 15 minutes to the quaint town of Aguas Calientes at the base of Machu Picchu. A 30-minute shuttle bus ascends you to the main entrance of the Machu Picchu citadel. You can also opt to hike one of the famous treks to Machu Picchu from Cusco or the Sacred Valley like the Inca Trail, Lares Trek, or Salkantay Trek instead of the train.

We recommend you pace yourself and arrive at Machu Picchu gradually to avoid being affected by altitude sickness. Spending one or two nights in Cusco will acclimate your body to the high altitude and result in a more enjoyable experience at Machu Picchu.

When is the best time to travel to Peru?

The best time to visit Peru is during Peru's winter months between May and September. This is the dry season in the Andes which offers favorable weather patterns for the most popular sites in Peru like Machu Picchu, Cusco, the Inca Trail, and the Amazon Rainforest in Puerto Maldonado. The prime time to visit coastal Lima is during Peru's summer months between December and April to enjoy the warm summer sunshine and coastal beaches.

Do I need a visa to enter Peru?

Travelers from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the European Union, and select other countries do not need a tourist visa to enter Peru. Do note that all travelers must have a passport that is valid for more than six months after your departure date. Upon arrival at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport, Peruvian Immigrations will stamp your passport and mark the number of days you are permitted to stay, typically 90 days.

For specific information about visa requirements for your country, visit VisaHQ.

Is Peru safe?

Yes, Peru is a safe tourist destination to travel to. Travelers should exercise regular caution by keeping expensive items in your hotel safety box, keeping an eye on personal belongings, and being aware of your surroundings in crowded areas like markets.

Our Top Pick hotels are all located in safe, convenient locations and come equipped with safes for storing your valuables.

For safety information regarding Covid-19, please review our updated post about coronavirus in Peru.

Consult your doctor and visit the CDC Peru website for more information about vaccination recommendations and requirements in Peru.

Should I go to Lima?

We think - yes! Lima houses something for every kind of traveler, world-renowned gastronomy that brings travelers specifically to Lima, a UNESCO downtown historic center, top museums like Larco Museum, art galleries, shopping malls overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and adventure activities like paragliding over the Lima skyline or surfing. Since you'll be landing at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport anyway, why not add on an extra day in Peru's capital?

Contact an Inca Expert travel advisor to see if Lima would be worth adding to your Peru trip.

What language do Peruvians speak?

Spanish is the primary language spoken in Peru as a result of being colonized by Spain in 1533. The indigenous languages of Quechua and Aymara are also official languages of Peru that can be encountered more often in rural areas. Even though English is not widely spoken in Peru, your guides, hotel personnel, and the use of a language translator like Google Translate will make your time in Peru easy.

All Inca Expert tours are done in private with English-speaking local guides.

Can you drink the tap water in Peru?

No. Tap water in Peru is not safe to drink unless purified or boiled. Travelers should purchase bottled water. You can also utilize refill stations with boiled or filtered water often available in your hotel lobby. Boiled drinks like coffee and tea are safe to drink.

What is transportation like on Inca Expert's Peru tours?

Inca Expert prearranges all transportation for your Peru tour to give you complete peace of mind. Private, clean, and roomy H1 or Sprinter vans will meet you at your hotels or airport and bring you from A to B. Choose between the Luxury Hiram Bingham train or Vistadome Train to Machu Picchu. If traveling from Lima to the Nazca Lines or Paracas, a VIP bus with large seats and ample leg-room will be reserved in your name.

Do I need to buy a voltage converter/plug adapter for my Peru trip?

You may need to bring a voltage converter and electrical plug adaptor for your electronics when traveling in Peru. Peru uses 220-volt electricity, instead of 110-volts. If your device does not have built-in dual voltage (110V/220V) you will need an adaptor so your electronics do not surge. Most mobile phones, laptops, and cameras have this built-in, but be sure to double-check before plugging in. Most electrical outlets, like the ones in top-rated hotels, are now designed to support both the American flat-pronged plug and the European round-prong plug, but if you plan to charge your devices offsite from your hotel, it will be handy to have a Type C plug adapter just in case.

Can I use ATMs and credit cards in Peru?

Yes. ATMs are abundant in major cities but generally charge a $3-$6 fee to your debit card to use the machine. Locations include BCP, Scotiabank, Interbank, BBVA Continental, and more. Credit cards are widely accepted in Peru with VISA being the major credit card provider. Always keep some Peruvian soles on hand because some locations offer discounts for cash, and local markets and street vendors only accept soles.

How much do I tip?

It is customary to tip in Peru for exceptional services as you'll receive on a tour with Inca Expert. The exact amount is up to your discretion, but we recommend:

Guide: Half-day private tour - 30-35 soles ($8-$10 USD) Full-day private tour - 50-60 soles ($14-$16 USD)

Driver: Half-day private tour - 5 soles ($1.50 USD) Full-day private tour - 10 soles ($3 USD)

4-Day Inca Trail/ Multi-day Trekking tour: Guide: 60-80 soles per person ($16-USD 22) Chef: 115 soles collective tip (USD 30 collective tip) Porters: 100 soles per porter collective tip (USD 25 per porter collective tip)

Servers: 10% of the total bill

What is the exchange rate?

The exchange rate for US dollars (USD) to Peruvian Soles (PEN) is currently $1 USD to 3.77 PEN. Money can be exchanged at an exchange house (casa de cambio) in any destination in Peru though bigger cities like Cusco, Arequipa, and Lima will have more options to find the best rates.

Will I experience symptoms of altitude sickness on my Peru tour?

40-50% of travelers experience minor symptoms of altitude sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness, like shortness of breath, fatigue, and dizziness when traveling in high altitude destinations in Peru such as on the Inca Trail, in Cusco, Arequipa, and Lake Titicaca. Symptoms of altitude sickness generally alleviate after 24-48 hours in altitude. Best practices for minimizing its impact on your trip include taking the time to acclimate, drinking lots of water, resting, avoiding alcohol, and eating light non-fatty foods upon arrival at altitude.

Consult with your doctor before traveling to high altitude destinations.

Ancient, Intriguing, Amazing!

Peru is one of South America’s premier destinations and not just because of its status of the land of the ancient Incas, the ruins of Machu Picchu and the Peruvian Andes; it’s also full of many cultural, historical and archeologically significant sites. But it is also known for its world-renowned food scene. Higher end restaurants are popping up everywhere with cuisine influenced by Latin America, Europe and even the Amazon and everyone is taking notice.

Destination Must-Sees

Peru ms1

Machu Picchu:

Peru’s impressive 15th century Inca ruins are located high in the stunning Andes Mountains. Much is still unknown about this site that is the most well-preserved evidence of the urban Inca Empire. The Incas were without a written language, therefore, there are no records left behind on how it was created, its uses or why it was abandoned.

Peru ms2

Lake Titicaca & the floating islands:

This area is home to the Uros people, a group of indigenous people (pre-dating the Incas). They live on breathtaking Lake Titicaca’s 42 floating islands. They believe that the lake was where the world was created and consider it sacred. Recently a large temple was discovered submerged in the lake, and the Uros people are fighting exploration for fear of the effects of disrespecting the temple will bring.

Peru ms3

This capital of the republic of Peru was originally named the ‘city of kings’ after the three wise men of the Bible, and later changed to Lima. You’ll find ancient sites and colonial architecture in this now modern city. The people are warm and hospitable and the food is delightful. The city has been awarded the world’s top food travel destination four years in a row.

jenly peru tours

The former capital of the Inca Empire, and was considered at that time to be the center of the world. The city is now an urban center of religion and government with charming streets, historic buildings and bustling squares. The most fascinating building in Cuzco is the Coricancha, known as the golden enclosure and the most sacred of all Inca sites.

Destination Must-Dos

Peru md1

Ollantaytambo:

A little, ancient town in the western end of the Sacred Valley, it is the best surviving example of Inca town planning. The town is divided into blocks of homes with only one entrance that leads to a central courtyard. This town was a great feat for ancient times as the stones used to build the town came from the opposite side of the river, requiring massive efforts from the people.

Peru md2

Sacsayhuaman:

Located on the outskirts of Cuzco, these ancient ruins sit atop a mountain leveled by the people of the period. Massive walls surround this sprawling complex. In the center lies a mysterious circular stone structure thought to be a solar calendar. The complex surprisingly has a water reservoir, storage cisterns, ramps, citadels, and underground chambers. Experts believe it was a fortress or former home of royalty.

Peru md3

The Sacred Valley:

Also known as Urumbamba Valley, the Sacred Valley of the Incas contains many intriguing remains of Inca villages – including mummies! Its climate and fertile plains have drawn settlers to this rare fruitful location in the high Andes since ancient times. This former route to the Peruvian jungle was also a buffer zone protecting settlers from incursions from the Antis jungle tribes.

Peru md4

Plaza de Armas:

In ancient times, this city square was home to an Incan palace and a venue for festivals and religious ceremonies. After the Spanish took over in the 16th century, the palace was demolished and two churches were erected here flanking the square, which was then used to conduct military exercises. Now, it holds a historic charm as most of the buildings you will see here date back to the 1700s.

Expert Advice

PaulVieira

Go shopping in the world renowned Pisac Market. Open every day, you will find hundreds of individual vendors from the local villages who sell everyday products and unique handmade items you won’t find anywhere else.

Peru e2

Taste the amazing ceviche. This popular Latin American dish of marinated fresh raw fish spiced with varied peppers and seasonings is “cooked” with citric juice (lemon or lime). Simply divine!

Peru e3

Sit down for a traditional meal. At a Pachamanca (earth oven) dinner that was popular with the Inca people, the food is layered, placed over hot stones and buried in the ground to cook for hours. It is a true cultural experience.

The enormous Sacred Rock (also called a Wank’a in Quechua) bears a striking resemblance to the mountain peaks behind it, and is considered a powerful spiritual symbol of Machu Picchu.

Temple of The Three Windows

One of Machu Picchu’s most iconic places, the Temple of the Three Windows overlooks the Sacred Plaza and consists of three windows in the typical Incan trapezoidal style.

Inca Bridge

A popular additional hiking destination inside Machu Picchu, The Inca Bridge (Puente Inca) is a thin wooden plank crossing a mile-high precipice found at the end of a narrow stone pathway. Designed as a secret exit, its precarious nature helped to limit access to the citadel.

Temple of the Condor

This natural rock formation which was carved by the Incas into the shape of an Andean condor was an object of worship and represents one of the most striking examples of Inca stonemasonry.

“Stairway of Fountains”

The engineering ingenuity of the Incas can be seen in the 16 fountains built within the Machu Picchu citadel. Likely used by the residents of Machu Picchu, these Incan water fountains still flow with water sourced from a spring near the Sun Gate or Inti Punku.

Temple of the Sun

The Temple of the Sun is a semicircular ruin within the Machu Pichu citadel. This site was one of the most sacred temples within the fortress. The trapezoid window is positioned so that on the winter solstice (June 21st), the sun’s rays shine directly into the temple.

Temple of the Moon

You’ll have to hike Huayna Picchu mountain, within the Machu Picchu citadel, to see the Temple of the Moon. This shadowy temple contains a throne carved into the stone and was used only by the Inca priests for ceremonial purposes.

Intihuatana

The famous Intihuatana, whose Quechua name is often translated to English as “The Hitching Post of the Sun,” is a carved stone which is thought to have possibly been used as a type of sundial.

What people love about Peru Tours in July

Amazing experience! The tour moves quickly so you see a lot in a short amount of time, which is exactly why I love these types of tours. I couldn't of asked for a better guide or group.
Great tour meeting some awesome people, seeing beautiful sights, great food and unforgettable experiences
Loved Peru. I found the people take great pride in their cities, culture and history and it shows in how clean the streets are, how great the food is and how wonderful the guides are. Loved the wildlife, the scenery and archeological sites too. My only downside was the airport.. Delayed flights and when trying to return home, no signage to show the directions from domestic (Cusco to Lima) to international section of airport. When I asked for help, I was told to go out the door, come back in the door next to it, only to find out that I needed to go outside, go to section adjacent and then go upstairs to departures which also had no sign there for "international departures". The LATAM staff gave me the run around on my luggage. One person said it would go automatically to Newark another said pick up your luggage in Lima and transfer to United. My luggage never arrived in Lima nor in Newark. When I arrived in Newark the United people said that LATAM was lying as it is never sent on directly and had to be collected and transferred by hand in Lima. I had to file a lost baggage claim upon final arrival in Canada . Still waiting for news.

During Pride Month, people from all walks of life around the country can come together as activists and allies. It’s during this time that many celebrate the progress made so far by the LGBTQIA community, as well as continue to spread the message of equality and work toward a better future.

In an interview with WTOP, Sahand Miraminy, director of operations at Capital Pride Alliance , said that this is a very important time for pride.

“There’s times where people often asked if pride is still necessary, and I think with a lot of the legislation going on around the country, and certainly around the world … [it] not only reminds us that it’s important to have pride, and important to sort of make our community visible, but it’s also important to celebrate the rights that we are currently enjoying. Certainly more than what those who have come before us have experienced,” Miraminy said.

For those in search of pride events coming up in the D.C. area, check out this varied list of parades and parties, book talks and art exhibitions as well as trivia events and walking tours.

There’s so much to do in the D.C. area in the coming days, and WTOP has you covered with our weekly roundup of area events worth anticipating. This week, WTOP covers a wide variety of LGBTQIA events around the region and throughout the month of June.

Check back every Thursday for a roundup of Things to do in the D.C. area .

On June 9, the Capital Pride Festival will have over 300 participating organizations, social groups, businesses and more along Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Expect two food courts and three beverage gardens, plus live entertainment.

PERU — A woman was shot and killed in her car allegedly by her husband Tuesday evening after a crash on Route 108, according to police.

David Gaudreau

David Gaudreau, 60, was arrested late Tuesday evening and charged with murder, said Maine State Police Lt. Aaron M. Turcotte.

Gaudreau, of Greenwood, made his first appearance in court at 1 p.m. Wednesday and was represented by attorney of the day A. Tucker Derstine. Derstine did not challenge probable cause for the murder charge and reserved argument on bail. Judge Andrew Robinson ruled Gaudreau is to be held without bail pending a future hearing.

Derstine floated the possibility of a mental health examination for Gaudreau. Robinson asked Derstine to communicate the possibility to Gaudreau’s appointed attorney Justin Leary for his consideration.

Police responded to several reports of a motor vehicle crash on Route 108 at approximately 7:10 p.m. in the area of 106-109 Auburn Road, Route 108 in Peru. Callers also reported that a truck stopped next to the vehicle and fired shots into the car, Turcotte said.

When first responders arrived, they discovered a blue Hyundai on the side of the road with a deceased female in the driver’s seat.  The female was later identified as Dale Gaudreau, 59, Turcotte said. Advertisement

Police arrest suspect in Peru car crash and gunfire incident

The Oxford County Sheriff’s Department requested the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit-South to assist with the investigation.

David Gaudreau had reportedly called several family members and told them that he shot his wife.

At 11:34 p.m., David Gaudreau surrendered himself to the Maine State Police and the Oxford County Sheriff’s department.  He was transported to Cumberland County Jail.

Earlier Wednesday, the Dixfield-based Regional School Unit 56 closed district schools in the aftermath of a vehicle crash and shooting Tuesday night on Route 108 near the entrance to Dirigo Elementary School.

According to a message from school officials, Route 108 was still closed at 5 a.m. Wednesday when the decision was made, prompting the decision to close all schools. Officials added that the closure will not affect the last day of school.

Route 108 has now reopened.
