Important information concerning travel to the Turkish-occupied area of Cyprus

Ever since the illegal Turkish invasion of July 1974, over 36% of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus remains unlawfully occupied by the Turkish army (for more information click  here ). As a result of this, the Government of the Republic of Cyprus which is the sole legal and internationally recognized government on the island, is not in a position to exercise effective control over the occupied areas of its territory.

If you intend to travel to Cyprus, you should be aware that the so-called “trnC”, the secessionist entity unilaterally declared by the occupation regime, has been condemned and declared illegal and invalid by the International Community through United Nations Security Council Resolutions 541/83 and 550/84.

Currently, and subject to any temporary COVID-related restrictions, it is possible for foreign visitors who visit the government-controlled area of the Republic of Cyprus, to cross to the occupied areas.

You should be aware, however, that staying in properties owned by Greek Cypriot refugees who have been forced by the occupation army to flee, including hotels in the occupied area which are being illegally exploited, would put you at risk of possible legal action on the part of the owners.

Travelers entering the Republic of Cyprus via any illegally operating airport or port in the occupied area that has been declared closed in accordance with International Law, will be in breach of national legislation of the Republic of Cyprus. You are therefore urged to travel via the legal points of entry to the Republic of Cyprus, so as to avoid the risk of facing the consequences of the law.

The legal points of entry to the Republic of Cyprus are the intenational airports of Larnaca and Paphos and the ports of Larnaca, Limassol, Latsi and Paphos, which are situated in the area under the effective control of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus. Entry to the territory of the Republic of Cyprus via any other port or airport in the area of Cyprus in which the Government of the Republic does not exercise effective control (Turkish occupied area) is illegal.

5. Travel Information

A passport is required, except for holders of:

  • Laissez-Passer issued by the United Nations.
  • Travel Document issued to stateless persons and recognised refugees in accordance with the Geneva Convention of 1951.

The processing time of a visa application is approximately 15 working days, so applicants are advised to leave enough time - between the appointment date and travel date - for the Mission to process their visa application; no guarantees can be given on the visa application’s return date as delays may occur.

In order to avoid any delays in the visa application process, it is paramount that the visa application is complete and its documents submitted are as per the Mission’s requirements.

Applicants also need to be aware that, especially during busy season around Eid, Summer holidays (July and August) and Christmas, the appointments are being booked very quickly as the Mission only processes a fixed amount of visa applications on a daily basis.

Furthermore applicants need to consider that VFS/Mission’s closures and holidays may extend the visa application processing time.

Therefore VFS recommends all applicants:

  • To book their appointment as soon as they know they’ll be travelling
  • To ensure that their visa application’s documentation meets the Mission’s requirements
  • To leave enough processing time for the Mission

Please be advised that due to the above mentioned minimum processing time, we are not able to guarantee the return of passports by specific dates for travel.

This visa is for people wishes to travel to Cyprus for Business/Conference purpose or the same.

Things to consider when applying for a Cyprus visa

When an Indian citizen is applying for a Cyprus visa, there are several crucial points to remember to ensure a smooth application process:

  • Determine the correct visa type: Cyprus offers various visas such as tourist, business, student, and transit visas. Choose the one that accurately matches the purpose of your visit.
  • Gather necessary documentation: The required documents usually include a valid passport with at least six months remaining before expiration, a completed visa application form, passport-size photographs, proof of accommodation (like hotel bookings), travel itinerary, return flight tickets, and proof of financial means (such as bank statements or a letter from a sponsor).
  • Provide proof of travel medical insurance: You must have travel medical insurance that covers the duration of your stay in Cyprus. The insurance should cover emergency medical situations and repatriation in case of illness or death.
  • Check for employment or study details: If travelling for work or study, additional documents like an employment contract, invitation letter from the company, or admission letter from an educational institution in Cyprus will be necessary.
  • Prepare for a personal interview: While not always mandatory, some visa applications may require an interview at the Embassy or Consulate. Be prepared to answer questions about your travel plans and reasons for visiting Cyprus.
  • Respect application deadlines and processing times: Submit your visa application well in advance of your intended travel date. Visa processing typically takes about 15 days, but times can vary depending on the specifics of your application and the time of year.
  • Follow Cyprus’s entry requirements carefully: Cyprus is not part of the Schengen Area, so even if you have a Schengen visa, you will need a separate visa for Cyprus unless exemptions apply.

Keeping these points in mind will help Indian citizens navigate the Cyprus visa application process more effectively and increase the likelihood of a successful application. However, for a safe tour, go ahead consider getting travel insurance .
