• Do you have firsthand knowledge about the cruise destination? The itinerary?

You will also want to ask the travel agent if they have a preferred relationship or negotiated agreement with any specific lines that could lead to special perks for you.

Be aware that not all agents work with all cruise lines; some represent only a few preferred suppliers or specialize in higher-end cruises. They get bigger commissions from their preferred lines.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, but be aware if the agent seems to be putting you off the line you were originally considering, as this could be the reason. The Business

When I became an Independent Travel Agent (ITA), my intentions were simply to save on my own travel, and that of close family and friends. At some point, it occurred to me that I could put my knowledge of the industry to greater use and help a broader clientele find and live their next adventure. So in 2020,  Journeys by Jacqy  was born.

Like a lot of you, I traveled for years never knowing ITA's existed. I never realized that for every cruise, resort, car rental, and vacation package you book, a booking agency fee is already built into the price you pay.

So for a couple of weeks or even months, you search sites like Expedia and Orbitz, only to put money in their pockets after you've done all the hard work of planning, finding and booking your perfect trip.

If you’re thinking of booking a cruise , you might be wondering if it’s better to book with a travel agent or directly with the cruise line? There are a few factors to consider, and questions to ask, before you decide.

In this post, we’ll go over the benefits of using a travel agent or cruise specialist, as well as the advantages of booking directly. When it comes to the best way to book a cruise, you may have wondered…

For most people, the benefits of using a travel agent experienced in selling cruises are well worth it. Travel agents will help you to choose a cruise, offer travel advice and answer questions, and can often find great cruise deals. Some may also provide an extra amenity, like an onboard cash credit or bottle of wine. 

However, there are some instances when some people will prefer to book directly with the cruise line. We’ll go through when and why this makes sense. I’ll also go through some of the most important and frequently asked questions about booking a cruise.

How to Book a Cruise – Travel Agent or Direct with the Cruise Line?

If you’re a first time cruiser , the process of how to book a cruise might seem confusing. However, even for repeat cruisers, some of this information may be helpful as well.

You can book your cruise with a travel agency or directly through the cruise line. This can mean using a local travel agency or booking online through a cruise vacation website.

Travel agents who specialize in selling cruises, are often referred to as Cruise Specialists or Cruise Consultants. This is important, as you will want to use a travel agent who is knowledgeable and trained in selling cruises.

Which Travel Agents Sell Cruises (examples)

• A local travel agency storefront
• A large online booking website
• Independent travel agents (who may work for cruise agency franchises)

When you do book online with a large website like Expedia Cruises or Vacations to Go, these are large travel agencies. In some cases, depending on the company, you can work with a specific cruise specialist for every cruise. For experienced cruisers, this can often be the best option.

Deposits and Final Payments

When you book a cruise several months or even a year or more in advance, cruise lines will ask for a deposit (which may or may not be refundable). The deposit secures your reservation until final payment. Cruise line final payment dates range from 120 days before your cruise, to 60 days before your cruise. Always check the cruise line confirmation and note the payment dates.

Should You Use a Travel Agent to Book a Cruise?

There are several benefits to using a travel agent to book your cruise. In fact, a majority of cruisers use a travel agent, whether a local agency or an online booking website, to book their cruise. 

According to the Cruise Line International Association , when people did use a travel agent, they reported a high degree of satisfaction with the advice, knowledge and value received.

Benefits of Using a Travel Agent to Book Your Cruise

Experience and Advice

One of the biggest advantages of using a travel agent to book a cruise is getting great advice. A cruise specialist can guide you to the right cruise line and ship based on your vacation preferences and goals for the trip.

If you’re new to cruising, using a travel agent to book a cruise is a good idea. First time cruisers need to know about travel documents, online check in, cruise line gratuities , new health protocols and more. Having a travel agent to hold your hand and answer questions, right up to embarkation day , is very helpful.

Cruise specialists are also aware of more than one cruise line, and for avid or repeat cruisers, this can be especially useful. Our tastes change over time, and we get older. What we loved about the cruise line we sailed with when the kids were young , may not be the best fit years later.

Travel agents can bring our attention to other cruise lines and travel experiences , especially as you may want to plan some of those bucket list cruises.

Service and Convenience

Travel agents can take care of the booking and making payments, and even help with booking flights and pre and post cruise hotels . Of course, if you prefer to book online with an online travel agency website, that’s a convenience too.

This will come as a surprise to many, but when you book a cruise, the service of your travel agent is free. The price will not be higher than booking with the cruise line directly. Now this doesn’t mean they don’t get paid, but rather that the cruise line pays a commission to them directly.

There can be exceptions to this, as some travel agents may charge booking or administrative fees. They should let you know if this is the case.

What to Look for in a Cruise Travel Agent

I love travel agents. In my experience, they are passionate travelers themselves, and can offer excellent first person advice. However, when it comes to cruising, you need a travel agent that specializes in cruise travel.

Travel agents who specialize in selling cruises are often called Cruise Specialists or Cruise Consultants. They are usually passionate cruisers themselves who have a keen interest in learning about cruises and sharing that knowledge with their clients.

When looking for a travel agent, make sure this person is knowledgeable and trained in selling cruises. When booking with an Cruise Agency franchise like Cruise Planners or Expedia Cruises, this should be the case. 

Questions to Ask Your Travel Agent or Cruise Specialist

When you make a payment (deposit or final payment), does the travel agent pay the cruise line directly on your behalf.

It’s best to have the travel agent make the payment for you using your credit card, directly with the cruise line. This is safer than the travel agent taking your payment, and paying the cruise line themselves. Paying directly ensures that your payment is made to the cruise line, and is standard practice for most agencies.

You can also ask to receive the booking confirmation from the cruise line, showing payments, for your records.

Do you have a back up to contact if you’re on vacation or unavailable?

Travel agents go on cruises and travel. While this is great, who is available if you have a question or need assistance? Often, those working for larger agencies or franchises will have a main contact number if the need arises.

Will you monitor my cruise fare for price drops or should I contact you?

Did you know that many cruise lines will adjust your cruise fare if it drops before final payment? Often it needs to be on the same cabin category and it won’t be combinable with past promotions, but it’s always worth checking.

While many travel agents will try to keep an eye on price drops, the reality is it can be missed. It’s a good idea to keep track yourself as well.

Are there any fees I should be aware of?

Some travel agents charge an administrative fee, or even a cancellation fee. While booking the cruise may be free, booking a flight or hotel may have additional fees. It may still be worth their service, however if you’re keeping track of your cruise vacation budget , it’s good information to know.

Do Travel Agents Get Better Deals on a Cruise?

Travel agents may have access to better deals on cruises. In most cases, larger agencies or franchises have huge influence and buying power with the cruise line. This can mean better pricing on some cruises and/or some extra perks or amenities.

The Earlier the Better

Travel agencies often hold inventory on cruise ships that are likely to be popular with their clients. They reserve several cabins at the earliest and lowest rates, and can continue to sell them even as prices increase with the cruise line.

However, these cabins can be limited, and may not be available closer to sailing. Book 6 months to a year, or more, before your cruise for access to these special rates.

Extra Perks

Travel agencies that sell cruises may also have some perks if you book with them. This can include an onboard credit (can be used on drinks, excursions and more), a bottle of wine or a plate of chocolate covered strawberries,  and even travel points.

Special Promotions

Another advantage of using a travel agent or cruise specialist, is being able to book when they have a special promotion with the cruise line. Agencies partner with cruise lines at certain times of the year and will offer a booking incentive, such as prepaid gratuities or specialty dining .

How to Get the Best deal on a Cruise

The best ways to find deals on a cruise is to keep informed. Sign up for your favorite cruise line’s emails, as well as emails from travel agencies and online booking websites.  If you get too many emails, consider working with only your favorites.

If you’re happy with the service and value of a specific travel agent, keep in touch and let them know what cruises you’re considering even a year or two down the line. This way, when she sees a new promotion or great deal on a cruise, she can let you know.

Should You use a Travel agent to Book a Group Cruise?

If you’re planning a group cruise, using a travel agent will be enormously helpful. 

Your cruise specialist will take care of everything you need, and manage all the reservations. If you’re planning a group cruise with friends or family (like a multi-generational cruise ), the travel agent will work with each party to make sure all their questions are answered. In addition, they’ll coordinate dining reservations and cabin locations.

If you’re the group leader, you can concentrate on the fun stuff, like matching t-shirts , and leave the boring details to your cruise consultant.

When Should You Book Directly with the Cruise Line?

If you know what cruise ship, itinerary and cabin you want, and prefer to do a lot of your own research, you may want to book directly with the cruise line. In addition, if you prefer to have control over all aspects of your cruise booking, and think you’ll be likely to make a lot of changes between placing a deposit, and sailing, booking direct will be most convenient.

When you book with a travel agent, they’re responsible for your booking, and all major changes need to be done through them. Things like changing cabins or requesting a price reduction, if the cost of your cruise drops before your final payment, will need to be done by your travel agent.

However, things that have to do with your own vacation planning are left up to you. As an example, reserving your shore excursions , making specialty dining reservations, and even booking your cruise line air flights are able to be done online, within your cruise reservation.

It’s worth giving this some consideration, as there are pros and cons to using a travel agent versus booking directly.

With plenty of ways to mingle with other passengers (or enjoy some quality alone time), going on a cruise alone is the perfect getaway for solo and single travelers .

However, you’ll need to do your research before booking since cruising solo can get expensive. Some cruise lines charge single supplements, which means you'll pay extra when traveling alone and staying in a room that's usually meant for two people.

Luckily, as solo cruising has become more popular, certain cruise lines have started to cater to the needs of guests traveling alone and even offer cabins specifically designed for solo cruisers.

1. Holland America Cruise Line

Known for having some of the best customer service in the industry, it should come as no surprise that Holland America Line is dedicated to providing an exceptional experience to solo travelers onboard their fleet of ships. 

The line’s newest ships—Rotterdam, Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam—have 12 single staterooms perfect for solo travelers. Each of these rooms is approximately 127-172 square feet and equipped with full-size and modern amenities. Plus, every single cabin boasts an ocean view, so you can enjoy the scenery during your voyage. 

Holland America Line also does a great job at creating an atmosphere of camaraderie on their ships. Smaller cruise lines are great for solo travelers since you’ll see familiar faces throughout your journey, which can make it easier to strike up conversations and form connections with fellow travelers. 

One of the best small cruise lines for solo travelers is Silversea Cruise Line. While they don’t offer single cabins, they have extremely low single supplements of just 25 percent on certain voyages. For reference, most cruise lines have single supplements that are 50 percent to 100 percent of the fare, so Silversea’s rate is very affordable in comparison. 

At the beginning of your voyage, there will be a champagne Welcome Reception which serves as the perfect opportunity to mingle with other solo travelers. During certain journeys, Gentlemen Hosts will be available aboard to welcome solo guests.

3. Royal Caribbean

Ship-sponsored vs. independent shore excursions on cruises: Which should you book?

O ne of the reasons why we board cruise ships is to experience the world, whether that's island hopping in the Caribbean, animal watching in Alaska or stepping into fairy-tale towns across Europe. But is it better to do your in-port exploration on a ship-sponsored tour booked through the cruise line or independently, either by booking shore excursions on your own with a third-party company or exploring the port without a tour?

There's no right or wrong approach. When I think back to my two favorite tours, one was ship-sponsored (a plant-based cooking class with a Rastafarian in Jamaica through Princess Cruises) and the other (a walking and history tour with a lifelong resident in Havana) was independently booked online. On both, I found what I was looking for — a glimpse into local culture.

Consider the pros and cons of both types of shore excursions as you're sifting through the choices on a cruise line's website. And remember: This isn't an all-or-nothing game. You might choose a ship-sponsored tour in select ports or when traveling with certain people but opt to venture out on your own on other trips or in other destinations.

Ship-sponsored tours: Pros

You'll be back to the ship on time.

Because everyone on the tour is a passenger on your ship, there is no way the ship will leave without your group back on board. Communications between the shore excursion guide and your ship are tight, and if the tour runs late due to traffic or another reason, the ship will wait for your bus to return.

If the ship's itinerary changes, you won't miss the tour

On one visit to Grand Cayman, high winds forced the ship's tender boats to shuttle passengers to a different pier than originally planned. Thankfully, my plans were fluid — take a taxi to Seven Mile Beach — but had I booked an independent tour, I might have missed the scheduled pickup time due to the new arrival location. Guests who booked a ship's tour were simply picked up at the new arrival point.

The same principle holds true for any itinerary changes that cause you to miss a port or arrive later than planned. Ship-sponsored tours either will adjust to accommodate you or issue you a refund. With independent tours, you're at the mercy of that tour operator's cancellation policies.

Changes to the tour can be made while sailing

A ship's cruise shore excursions desk is for booking — and canceling — tours. If the weather looks bad for the day of your bicycling tour or you've had enough beach time and decided you want something different, you can usually cancel your tour within 48 hours for a refund. (Be sure to check the cruise line's policies.)

It's trickier to change your mind when you have to call or email a third-party provider, and that company may have different cancellation policies.

Bottom line: It's easier to cancel tours on board.

You'll optimize a short stay in port

Ship-sponsored tours usually focus on more than one activity. There's often a restaurant or boutique stop, as well as one or two other highlights. If you're a person who likes to check off lots of boxes, this is ideal.

I recently booked an Alaska shore excursion ("Best of Ketchikan: Totems, Wildlife Cruise & Alaska Appetizers") for a visit to Ketchikan through Princess Cruises that satisfies my love for fresh seafood, sailing and local art — all in the span of a few hours.

Tours are vetted by the cruise lines

Sure, you could pop off the ship and flag down a person holding a sign advertising a tour, but how will you have time to check review sites to make sure they're legit? When booking through the ship, you know the tour has been vetted and, more importantly, endorsed.

I would have been hesitant to hop into a small van and trek up a muddy mountain to a stranger's house in Dominica to learn cooking skills if I hadn't booked through Celebrity Cruises . That excursion was an amazing glimpse into local culture that was made possible by a ship-sponsored tour.

Ship-sponsored tours: Cons

Ship-sponsored tours might offer less physical activity.

Although hiking and kayaking outings have been added to ship-sponsored shore tour rosters in recent years, these active excursions cater to the average cruiser and not athletes. What's strenuous to you and what's strenuous to the average Holland America traveler might be completely different. If you're a fitness buff or an experienced hiker, biker and/or kayaker, you might be disappointed.

When choosing tours, consult the activity level for terms like "moderate" or "strenuous," and also look for the number of miles walked, kayaked or biked. That said, I brought up the rear on a Scenic Cruises vineyard bicycling tour in Bordeaux, France, due to the ship's surprisingly active seniors. To go at your own pace, rather than the group's, you're better off on your own.

Groups tend to be large

Instead of a more personalized experience, passengers on some ship-sponsored tours are packed onto motorcoaches with little or no opportunity to engage the guide if they aren't sitting in the first few rows. If possible, look for a tour with a limited number of spots, especially if you'll be walking, so you can interact. A tour guide speaking through a microphone to a completely full catamaran or through a VoxBox headset isn't necessarily intimate.

There's a chance they'll sell out

There's a reason you're advised to pick tours early: They book up. Even if you log into your cruise line's website to book tours the second they open up (which could be at midnight), shipmates in more expensive suites or with higher loyalty program status might have snatched up all the spots on the hottest tours.

Independent options can also book up in advance, but you usually have more choices of operators and flexibility on when to book, so you can find something you like.

Cruise ship tours don't venture off the beaten path

A 5,000-passenger ship can hardly offer three tours with 15 people on each, especially when partnering with the island's most eccentric artist or chef. They have to offer tours en masse to attractions used to handling thousands of travelers each day.

When I dock in Philipsburg, St. Maarten, I hail a taxi to Grand Case on the French side and opt out of ship-sponsored tours. That means I'm not one of 50 people still in line for a pain au chocolat at a bakery while the motorcoach driver tells me I have "five more minutes."

Look to the smaller cruise lines for more options for small-group tours, and know that those excursions are likely to be expensive and sell out quickly.

You're likely to pay more for ship-sponsored tours

Speaking of price, ship-sponsored tours are often more expensive than the same tour offered directly through the operator. That's because the cruise line serves as the middleman and inflates the fees so it can take a cut before it pays the tour company.

Independent tours: Pros

Independent tours take smaller groups.

When you sign on to an existing third-party tour, instead of filling up a motorcoach, you will probably be one of fewer than 20 people hopping in a van or spreading out on a bus. Book a private tour for your travel party, and it might be just you and your group.

This small setting allows you to ask a lot of questions and even customize the day's schedule with activities for antsy kids or photo stops at sights of interest. You can slow or quicken the pace and potentially choose what you see.

They're more physically active

A rock-climbing tour probably isn't going to partner with a large cruise ship. People who wish to scale boulders are a small niche of travelers. Even that hike or bike ride offered through the cruise line will be fairly easy. If exerting adrenaline is a must, go off on your own or find a local guide. You can tailor the day's activities to your fitness level and skill and go at your preferred pace.

Independent tours can go to less touristy places

Tour buses stick to the tourist hot spots to accommodate the general interests of first-time visitors. If you've already visited a cruise port before or prefer less-crowded or gimmicky options, you might need to ditch the ship-sponsored tour for a private guide or explore on your own.

Get recommendations from a co-worker, a friend or online travel forums ahead of time. Don't be shy about asking crew members or shop, gallery or restaurant workers for the best conch salad in Nassau in the Bahamas or a locals' beach. You might find yourself gazing out to sea at a family-owned shack by the side of the road while having an amazing local meal or enjoying a quiet strip of sand while your shipmates are herded around in tour buses.

Private cruise excursions cost less or offer more value

As I mentioned earlier, going straight to the tour provider can snag you the same tour your ship is offering for a lower price. Small-group or private tours, on the other hand, tend to be pricier than large-group cruise ship excursions.

However, you'll get better value for your money when you can customize the tour to your preferences or spend more time sightseeing and less time waiting around for other people in your group. If you can get together a group of eight or 10 people, you can split the costs to make a private tour more affordable per person.

Sometimes you don't need a tour

For ports close to a downtown area or the beach, you don't need a tour to enjoy your day. Take a cab to the beach, window shop in town or grab lunch at a local eatery. All you need is a map and some cash.

After lunch on the beach in Bridgetown, Barbados, I took a short taxi downtown, stopped in the locals' version of a dime store and strolled through a farmer's market. I didn't need a guide for that, and I was happy to get away from the tour bus hordes for a few hours.

Independent tours: Cons

You might be out of luck if your itinerary changes.

Ship tours will accommodate schedule changes, but that's not always the case with private excursions.

The tour operator might not know that your ship had to head back to its departure port due to a medical emergency or that it changed its docking location or time. It might deem you a no-show and charge your credit card for the tour you missed. Even if you do manage to get in touch, your guide's cancellation policy might not allow last-minute refunds.

Most tour operators catering to cruisers understand that weather patterns can change your ship's itinerary, causing you to arrive on a different day or skip the port completely. Often, their cancellation policies cover these itinerary changes — especially if it's a group tour, rather than a private guide. However, there might not be room to accommodate you on a popular tour on the revised date or arrival.

Bottom line: Ship tours will always accommodate itinerary changes; independent tours don't always.

Unexpected problems can make you miss the ship

Most tour guides catering to cruise passengers are conscientious about getting passengers back to the ship on time, but a traffic jam, bad weather or a medical emergency can derail even the best-laid plans. If a private tour takes longer than projected, the ship likely won't wait, and you could be faced with making your own arrangements to meet back up with the ship or return home.

Independent travel can stress you out

While I love straying from the port and getting away from the hustle and bustle, independent travel can stress me out. On my own, I constantly check the time or fret that the taxi will get a flat tire and I'll miss the ship.

Some people worry when navigating a foreign language without a guide to help translate. Others are concerned about getting lost in an unfamiliar city or fear they're missing out on the cultural and historical context if they can't read signs in another language.

If independent exploration makes you anxious, by all means, sign up for that guided tour. Even if you see less, you'll be happier about the sites you do experience.

Khimki is part of the Moscow conurbation, on the banks of the Moscow channel and the Klyazma river, and one of the highest density rate in the region.

Before the city, there were several noble lands, which villages are still exist. During the late 19th century, the site of Khimki station became (and remains) the place of Muscovite dachas. Khimki was granted city status, and the Stariye Khimki development was completed. Since then, development programs have turned the countryside into an important city in the region.

Today, Khimki is not only a residential district, but also an important economic and trade center of the Moscow conurbation.

Get in [ edit ]

Since Khimki is close to Moscow, has very high population density and a lot of development projects, the city is under blockade by Moscow to protect the capital's transport infrastructure from the flood of people and vehicles migrating in and out every day. There are no ways of comfortable and fast way to get the city.

By car [ edit ]

Khimki is accessible by car via Leningradsky Hwy from Moscow. The part of this highway from Moscow till end of Khimki city limits is the busiest road in Russia.

By public transport [ edit ]

By suburban train from Leningradskii station to Khimki station or Levoberegnaya platform (a district on the left bank of Moscow channel).

A lot of buses and marshrutkas run from Rechnoy Vokzal metro station, at the north end of the Green Line. You can also reach Khimki by marshrutka, bus or trolleybus from Planernaya metro station.
