Best Hvar boat trips to the Blue Cave

The Blue Cave , also called the Blue Grotto, is a famous natural wonder in Croatia. Inside, the cave glows with a beautiful blue light, creating a magical atmosphere. It’s truly breathtaking and hard to put into words.

There are plenty of boat tours from Hvar to choose from. Here are my top picks for incredible Hvar boat trips to the Blue Cave.

Tour duration: full day Tour type: group Best for: nature lovers

The highlight of this boat tour is visiting the mesmerizing Blue Cave. On the way, you’ll explore other beautiful coves, beaches, and bays like the Green Cave and Stiniva Cove.

I love that there is enough time to swim in the crystal-clear water and explore each sight. With plenty of time in Vis town, this is a fantastic Vis day trip from Hvar.

Antonia, Dario, and the rest of the crew are knowledgeable about the places you visit and go above and beyond to make the trip memorable.

Tour duration: full day Tour type: private Best for: flexibility

Explore some of the most impressive sights near Hvar like the Blue and Green Caves, as well as Stiniva Cove where you can use the provided snorkeling gear to explore the underwater life.

If you want the comfort of a private Blue Cave tour from Hvar , this is a fabulous option. Since there aren’t other tourists on the boat, the captain, Daniel, is usually quite flexible if you want to make minor changes to the itinerary.

Tour duration: full day Tour type: group Best for: variety

If you want to visit several islands, this is a great option . You’ll visit the Blue Cave on Bisevo, Stiniva Cove on Vis Island, Green Cave on Budikovac Island, snorkel in the turquoise waters off of Ravnik islet, and finish it all off with lunch on the Pakleni islands.

If you tend to get hangry like me, make sure you bring some snacks as the lunch stop is quite late in the day. The skippers Bozo and Tony bring lots of joy to the tour and they are knowledgeable about the places you visit.

hvar island boat trip

Best Boat Tours from Hvar to the Pakleni Islands

Just a quick boat ride from Hvar town lies the Pakleni Islands. Despite their name, which translates to Hell Islands, they’re nothing short of paradise. A day trip to this stunning archipelago is a must-do while in Hvar!

Tour duration: half day Tour type: group Best for: relaxing adventure

Explore stunning coves, hidden caves, and breathtaking beaches on this intimate and laid-back yacht tour . You’ll get to explore the coast of Hvar Island and the Pakleni Islands, a rocky archipelago just off the coast of Hvar town.

Enjoy jumping off the boat, swimming, snorkeling, and stand-up paddleboarding in idyllic surroundings.

While I love that this boat tour allows plenty of water activities, it is also a wonderful boat to just relax on and enjoy the views of the mesmerizing Pakleni Islands. You can even bring your own food and drinks to store in the fridge onboard.

Tour duration: half day Tour type: group Best for: active day on the water

A great way to see the Pakleni archipelago and the waters surrounding Hvar is by kayak. You get plenty of time for swimming, snorkeling, and even grabbing a coffee at one of the beach bars in Zdrilca Bay on Pakleni Islands.

I love that this kayak tour from Hvar follows a loop route so you get to see so much more than if the return was the same way.

Ivan and the other guides are friendly and easygoing making the kayaking pleasant no matter your level. The kayaks are also good quality and you get a proper safety briefing before the tour.

I’ve already mentioned this tour above but if you want to visit several islands, this 5 island tour really is a great option.

Explore the Blue Cave on Bisevo, unwind at Stiniva Cove on Vis Island, and discover the Green Cave of Budikovac Island. Dive into the crystal-clear waters near Ravnik islet and cap off your day with a delectable lunch on the Pakleni islands. You’ll get to visit the renowned Palmizana beach with its array of bars and eateries.

Pack some snacks to keep hunger at bay, as lunchtime comes fashionably late in the day. And fear not, with skippers Bozo and Tony at the helm, you’re in for a journey filled with laughter and enlightenment.

Best Hvar tours for Foodies and culture

Dalmatian culture is rooted in food and drinks which you can dive into through Hvar’s best foodie and culture tours.

Hvar is home to the UNESCO-listed Stari Grad plains where you’ll find olive groves, lavender fields, and vineyards. Given Hvar’s most famous local wine is named Bogdanuša, which means Given by God, there is no doubt a wine tasting is a must.

Wild boar also roam freely in the area and are used in local delicacies in selected restaurants like Konoba Kokot .

Hvar Google Map

Save hours researching and planning and get access my private Hvar Google map with 100+ pins to the best of Hvar !

Tour duration: 2.5 hours Tour type: group Best for: culture, cousine

Going on a wine tasting tour is a lovely way to learn more about the local wines in Hvar. This tour takes you to the Tomic winery in Vrboska or the Dubokovic winery in Jelsa where you get an insight into the wine production and the grapes they grow.

At the winery, you will get to sample some of their best wines in one of the wine cellars accompanied by bread and olive oil.

The highlight of this tour (besides the wine, of course!) is the drive across the island to and from the winery. You’ll even get to stop at Napoleon Fort to take in the views over Pakleni Islands on one side and the Kabal Peninsula on the other.

The guides are knowledgeable and eager to share information about the island and places you drive by, so this is a great opportunity to learn more about Hvar and the culture from a local’s perspective.

Tour duration: half day Tour type: group Best for: hidden gems

Explore Hvar beyond the trodden path and try true local food, on this tour of the island’s hidden gems . Experience the real Hvar outside the tourist traps venturing inland, taking in the views, and exploring rustic villages.

Get ready for spectacular views of Hvar and the surrounding islands From Napoleon Fort. In the season, you will also stop by the lavender fields in Brusje. But the local meal, set in an abandoned village, is truly the icing on the cake.

Best Adventure Tours of Hvar

If you like to fit a little adventure into your vacation, this section is for you. From cycling to kayaking, there are so many wonderful ways to explore Hvar while staying active. Here are the best adventure tours of Hvar.

hvar island boat trip

Tour duration: half day Tour type: self guided Best for: hidden gems, flexibility

Exploring the island by e-bike gives you so much freedom to see parts of the island you otherwise wouldn’t. Hvar is hilly, so getting the support of an e-bike ensures you get around even if you aren’t used to biking.

When you pick up your e-bike, you get a map with points of interest to follow so you easily find the hidden gems of Hvar like Velo Grablje.

Make sure you bring swimwear for the beach stops and cash to grab a drink or a bite to eat during your excursion. In summer double down on sun protection and bring plenty of water, things tend to heat up fast!

Jure and the staff at Antonio rent will give you plenty of tips before your ride, but if you prefer the convenience of a guided e-bike adventure, book this guided bike tour .

Tour duration: half day Tour type: group Best for: slow eco travel

Cycling around Hvar with a local gu ide is one of the best ways to see the island at a slow pace. As opposed to the e-bike tour above, this is by push bike and there is no cheating when going uphill!

You will explore hidden gems and learn about history from a local’s point of view as you cover the northern part of Hvar with your guide.

The guides, including Grgo, make you feel like family and the ride is relaxed and friendly. Grgo and his family also run the winery where you will end the tour and sample some of their wines.

Tour duration: half day or full day Tour type: self guided Best for: hidden gems, flexibility

Renting a quad is a great way to see the less touristy parts of Hvar island and you get to access places that are not reachable by car.

I highly recommend going to the Kabal Peninsula which is one of the most underrated places in Hvar. Covered in pine forest and home to some of the most breathtaking coves and beaches it is almost unbelievable that there aren’t more people there.

With a quad, you can easily get to beautiful Hvar beaches at the end of dodgy roads, like Gromin Dolac and Lucisca.

Before you start you will get a proper walk-through of how to operate the ATV, so even if it is your first time quad biking, you will feel safe. And they also provide a map of sights to see. But if you ask me, just head off to the Kabal Peninsula.

Best day trips from Split to Hvar

If you are based in Split, your itinerary should include a day trip to Hvar and surrounding islands.

The crystal-clear water dotted with picturesque islands can easily turn a boat trip from Split to Hvar and the Pakleni Islands into your best memory from Croatia. Here are the best Hvar tours from Split.

Tour duration: full day Tour type: private Best for: nature lovers, flexibility

If you want to prioritize Hvar on your day trip, this speed boat tour is the best option giving you meaningful time to explore the island. The boat stops at the Red Rocks on Hvar where you can swim in crystal-clear water, the Pakleni archipelago, and plenty of time in Hvar Town.

Being a private tour , it allows for customizations in the itinerary if there are some places you want to spend a longer or shorter time at.

If you prefer a relaxing catamaran cruise from Split to Hvar where you get plenty of time onboard with food and drinks included, this tour is for you.

The itinerary is jampacked with beautiful nature, activities, and sightseeing and I can’t recommend this tour enough, especially for the friendly and knowledgeable crew. You’ll get to visit several islands like Hvar, Brac, Pakleni, and Solta. You’ll stop for swimming and snorkeling in secluded bays along the way and even a guided tour of Hvar Town.

hvar island boat trip

Getting to Hvar, Croatia

There is no commercial airport on Hvar and in order to reach the island you’ll have to take a boat or a ferry from Split, Drvenik or one of the surrounding islands.

Most visitors come to Hvar from Split, and if that’s the case with you, make sure to check out my Split itinerary to make the most of your time in Split Old Town and its surroundings.

There are two ferry lines connecting Hvar to the mainland; Split – Stari Grad and Drvenik – Sucuraj. While you can usually just rock up at the port and get a ferry ticket there, in high season it’s better to book it ahead of time.

Book your car ferry.

The passenger ferry is much faster than the ferry and it will drop you off in the centre of Hvar town. This is the best option if you do not have a car.

Book your boat trip to Hvar.

Private transfers by speedboat are the fastest way of getting to Hvar and often include pick up from the airport.

They’re a fabulous option for bigger groups, late arrivals and anyone wanting to take some extra precautions with social distancing and Covid safety. Private transfers are also a lot more flexible in terms of drop off points and can get you much closer to your chosen accommodation on Hvar.

Book your private transfer here.

hvar island boat trip

Getting around Hvar in Croatia

Hvar is almost 70 kilometres long and as soon as you venture past Jelsa the roads get narrower and windier. And parking is an issue in most of Croatia.

There is also plenty of places on Hvar that are only accessible over gravel or dirt roads. Most rental car companies won’t allow you on gravel or dirt roads and these are often the most beautiful places you won’t want to miss out on!

Despite exploring the island by car ourselves, this would not be our first choice if we had to rent one on the island. Some roads (if you’d like to explore deeper) are just too narrow for two way traffic and parking is an issue in most places in Croatia.

That being said, a lot of people explore the island by car since it’s cost effective and very easy to get it over by ferry and there certainly is something to be said about AC!

A scooter is a fabulous way to explore Hvar! It’s easy, affordable and the island is just small enough that you can get almost anywhere by scooter. OK, maybe not Sucuraj or you won’t be able to feel your ass by the end of it.

Navigating the narrow roads and parking is a lot easier when you have a scooter, just make sure you get one that’s strong enough to get you over the hills before you get old!

Hire a 125cc scooter

As we mentioned before, there’s plenty of gravel and dirt roads on Hvar d certain areas are better explored with a 4×4!

We’d recommend you rent an ATV for the Kabal Peninsula and to take the shortcut (past Zi’s favourite beach ) to Sveta Nedilja. On top of that you’ll be able to discover loads of other bays and beautiful viewpoints you can’t access otherwise.

Rent an ATV

There are several busses per day that connect the main towns and villages on Hvar island as well as water taxi services you can use.

hvar island boat trip

The best time to visit Hvar is in the shoulder season which runs April till mid-June, and September to October. This is when the crowds are manageable, the weather is warm and pleasant, and the prices more affordable. If you visit in Autumn you’ll also have the benefit of the warmer sea.

Hvar claims it gets the most sunshine of all the islands and it is a popular summer holiday destination that becomes very crowded, loud, and expensive in the peak of season which is late June till the end of August.

As a rule of thumb, we would advise you to avoid Croatia in the peak of summer. It just gets too hot, too crowded, and too expensive. You’ll have a much better experience visiting in late spring or early Autumn.

During the winter months, Hvar is very quiet and most bars, restaurants and shops are closed.

Hvar is a beautiful island and we’re sure you’ll love it! To help you plan your trip to Hvar Island we’ve prepared a series of travel guides for you to help you dig deeper into each of the above mentioned locations.

  • Blue Cave & Hvar ~ 5 Island Tour

~ Experience your own slice of paradise on this full day island hopping trip that will introduce you to the wonders of Adriatic sea. Fall in love with the glistening light inside Blue cave, snorkel in the glittering azure waters of Blue lagoon and discover why everyone is so enchanted with island Hvar! ~

  • Good to know

Meet your host and the group at 07:30 AM on Riva (main waterfront).

Heard the stories about long waiting lines to enter Blue cave? This is exactly what we are trying to avoid by doing check in early.  Even this way, we can not guarantee there will be no waiting line once we arrive to Blue cave. What we can guarantee is that our crew will never allow you to be standing in line for longer than 10 minutes! Depending on the situation on site, your tour guide will either point you towards a bar so you can enjoy a coffee with a view or add a surprise destination after purchasing your tickets (entrance tickets are included in the price). Your only concern is to relax and enjoy your day!

Hop on our brand new luxury speedboat and soak up the sun as you ride towards Biševo island to visit our first stop of the day, amazing BLUE CAVE !

This rare natural phenomenon will take your breath away after you see its mesmerizing blue light.

The cave has two openings; a smaller one artificially made in order for boats to be able to pass through, while the other, a much wider arch, lies beneath the sea level on the south side of the cave.

Sunlight that penetrates through this underwater entrance reflects from the bottom of the cave creating the silvery blue magic we all came to see.

TIP – Try to put down your phones or cameras just for a second to fully experience this Mother Nature’s awe-inspiring masterpiece!

Following our visit to Blue cave we will sail along the southern coast of island Vis built mainly of limestone and enjoy the captivating views of the monumental cliffs and many small caves carved by the waves.

One of the main attractions this island has to offer is famous STINIVA BAY . After being voted best beach in Europe, Stiniva became very crowded which is the reason why we will just make it a short sightseeing stop here and continue to a much less crowded place.

BLUE LAGOON on island BUDIKOVAC – here we come! You will have approximately one hour for swimming and snorkelling in this idyllic turquoise lagoon!

We will provide snorkelling gear as well as some cool inflatables 🙂

Make sure your sunscreen is on by now and you’re all set to enjoy the sun and the crystal clear waters .

Fun fact: there is only one resident living during the whole year on Budikovac, Mr. Andro, who runs a small restaurant on the beach with the coolest local vibe!

The adventure goes on with the thrilling 40 minute ride from almost uninhabited Budikovac to our next destination; charming, rich in history, voted number one island in Europe with a record 600,000 plus votes by the readers of Conde Nast in 2019 – HVAR ISLAND !

This Croatian gem deserves every minute of 3 hours of free time which you will have here. Choose a beach bar to chill out, try Mediterranean cuisine in one of its many restaurants ( by the time we arrive to Hvar you will be hungry and here you will have plenty of choice to endulge yourself – in case you are uncertain where to go feel free to ask the crew for recommendations ) and roam its charming narrow streets!

TIP: Make the slow , uphill climb to 13th century fortress ( known as Fortica or Spanjola ) with the best views on the island. Having 3 hours of free time is more than enough to include this amazing spot in your day.

Last but not least, PAKLENI ISLANDS  is the perfect place to chill out and have one more refreshing swim before we had back to where this all started, our lovely Split!

The Complete Hvar Island Travel Guide

This Hvar Island Travel Guide will help you plan a visit to this great Croatian island whether you plan a short day trip from Split or a longer stay in Hvar, Croatia.

Hvar is the most famous of all Croatian islands . It is best known for its turquoise waters, lavender fields, 2.800 hours of sunshine a year, good nightlife, and as a summer refuge for the rich and famous.

We also like it for its history and culture, lovely countryside, hidden bays, tasty food, and great local wines.

With a surface of 300 m2, it is the fourth-largest Croatian island.

A complete travel guide to Hvar Island Croatia, Illustration

Hvar Island is located in central Dalmatia, off the coast of Makarska Riviera on the mainland, and between the islands of Brac, Vis, Korcula, and Peljesac peninsula.

Hvar Town, Vrboska, Stari Grad, and Jelsa are the most popular towns on the island. Beautiful nature, a good tourist infrastructure, lovely beaches, tons of history, and good nightlife are some of the reasons to visit Hvar. From historical old towns dating back to ancient times to lovely pebbly beaches, and natural beauties, Hvar Island is a wonder to be discovered.

Table of Contents

Map & location

The island stretches for just over 68 km from northwest to southeast. And, it’s the longest Croatian island.

Hvar Town is the largest settlement on the island and the island’s administrative center.

The northwest part of the island is rich in freshwater springs, and thus fertile, while the rest of the island is rather dry.

Below you’ll find a google map of the island.

Best Time to Visit Hvar Island

The best time to visit Hvar is from June through October.

While July and August are the peak season in entire Croatia, Hvar is particularly crowded and accommodation prices are quite high. The average sea temperature is 25°C / 77°F, and the air temperature is 30°C / 86°F.

If you visit Hvar in June or September, you will be able to enjoy swimming and sunbathing with the sea temperature above 20° / 68°F (the average is usually around 22°-23° / 72°F-73°F) and the average air temperature is around 26° / 79°F.

Hvar Island Travel Guide: Best towns

Hvar Town, Vrboska, Stari Grad, and Jelsa are the most popular towns on Hvar Island. Choosing the best place to stay on Hvar island depends on multiple factors, like how many days you plan to stay here, how budget-minded you are, whether would you travel by car, do you plan on staying in one place, or traveling around, and so on.

If you want to see and be seen and don’t mind paying a premium for that pleasure, choose Hvar Town. Otherwise, choose Vrboska, Stari Grad, or Jelsa if you prefer a quieter, more laid-back vibe that is also lighter on your wallet.

Air view of Jelsa

Hvar Town is the largest, best-known, and most-visited town on the island. The most attractive destination on the island, it is also the most expensive place to stay. The town boasts a myriad of beaches, hotels, restaurants, historical buildings, and cultural monuments, as well as the best nightlife on the entire island.

Stari Grad is the oldest settlement on the island. The town is located along the long, deep bay with the old town at its end. The old town consists of traditional stone houses, cobblestone streets, and numerous churches. The most interesting monument is Tvrdalj Castle, a palace from the 16 th century. Beaches aren’t Stari Grad’s forte, but nevertheless, it’s a popular summer destination.

Located in the center of the island’s northern shores, Jelsa has lovely beaches ( some of them sandy! ), a good choice of private accommodation, and a variety of sports facilities, restaurants, and bars. It’s a good alternative to Hvar town for those looking for more affordable accommodations and a quieter vibe.

If you fancy quaint villages, consider Vrboska, Milna, Sveta Nedjelja, or Sućuraj.

Reasons to visit the Island

Hvar is one of the most visited Croatian islands for a reason. It’s stunningly beautiful, with good tourist infrastructure, lovely beaches, tons of history, and good nightlife.

The first thing you’ll notice on the island is its breathtaking nature and the scents of wild herbs filling the air. Island’s beaches are one of a kind, and a great reason to visit Hvar. And so is the island’s rich historical and cultural heritage, including churches, palaces, plains, cobblestone streets and squares, and fortresses. People make places, and one of the reasons to visit Hvar is its warm and friendly people.

Natural beauty

After hearing of so many celebrities visiting the island, you might imagine it all glitz and glamor, but it’s far from the truth. Our number one reason to visit the island is actually its stunning nature.

The island, out of the main tourist resorts, is pretty intact. Wild herbs perfume the air wherever you go. The wild oregano left the deepest impression on us on our last visit here, back in May. We even brought some home and planted them in our garden. Fingers crossed they survive Istrian winter [2021 Update: it didn’t survive – *sad face*].

Island’s beaches are one of a kind. And if beach hopping is your kind of vacation, then Hvar might just be the right destination in Croatia to visit.

With a length of 250 km, the island’s coastline offers ample possibilities for swimming, and a wide range of beaches: rocky, pebbly, and even sandy beaches.

And while the island is super-popular, and gets loads of tourists over the summer, you can still find your little (semi)private spot by the sea.

Obviously, this won’t happen on the most popular beaches in and around main towns, like Jelsa, Stari Grad, and Vrboska. But take a drive east, to less popular corners of the island, and you’ll discover many coves, bays, and beaches where very few fellow tourists wander.

Also, the sea here is so clean and has a special glittering color.

History & Culture

Illyrians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Croatians, Venetians, Austrians, French, and Italians, all ruled the island throughout history, and they all left a trace in the island’s architecture, culture, and food.

Agricultural land in Stari Grad plains, UNESCO World Heritage Site , is still divided following the same pattern that the Greeks laid down almost 2500 years ago.

Hvar theatre, constructed in 1612, is one of the oldest theatres in all of Europe.

So, wherever you go on the island, you’ll encounter something of historical value.

Cobblestone streets, centuries-old squares, churches, and palaces dotting major towns and villages on Hvar are all witnesses of the island’s long history.

There is a common belief among Croatians, that people living on islands are special. Not in a bad or good way, just simply different than people living on the mainland.

However, for some reason, I found people on Hvar, to fit me perfectly. I found them warm, welcoming, open, funny, and very direct in communication. People make places, and one of the reasons to visit Hvar is its warm and friendly people.

What to see in Hvar, Croatia

From historical old towns dating back to ancient times to beautiful pebbly beaches, and natural wonders, Hvar Island is a wonder to be discovered.

Hvar Town is the most popular town on the island and a must-see place. Dubovica Beach is a lovely cove with clear water perfect for snorkeling. Stari Grad Plain is a historical landmark set by the Greeks in the 4th century BC, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. An archipelago of twenty-something islands, Pakleni islands are a true wonder of nature and an inevitable stop when in Hvar, Croatia. Established in 384 BC by Greek colonists, Stari grad is one of the oldest continuous settlements in all of Croatia.

Hvar Old Town, bell tower, church and stone houses

The most popular town on the island, Hvar is simply gorgeous and a must-see on your trip here. Dominated by a large town square that features an Arsenal building, St. Stephen Church, and a small port, the old town is encircled by protective walls from the interior and overlooked by the 16 th -century Spanish Fort ( Fortica ). Today, Fortica is a popular tourist spot, and it offers lovely views over the town, the sea, and the Paklinski Islands. For even better views (and fewer tourists), hike or drive up to Napoljun fortress atop Saint Nicolas hill.

Dubovica Beach

Dubovica Beach is a lovely cove with clear water perfect for snorkeling. This lovely beach is a must-visit! The parking, aside from the main road, is limited, and you need to walk to reach the beach from the road. However, it’s well worth the effort. The beach is secluded, made of small rounded pebbles, and while it is off-the-beaten-path, it still gets quite busy. There are two beach bars/restaurants serving drinks and food. The shade is limited, but dips in clear blue Adriatic should keep you cool. It gets crowded in high season.

Stari grad Plain

Unesco World Heritage Site since 2008, this fertile agricultural land, east of Stari Grad, has been cultivated since ancient times. In fact, it still keeps the same layout, as set by the Greeks in the 4 th century BC. Cycle or take a ride through this maze of plots, planted mainly with grapes, olives, and veggies, and divided by dry stone walls.

Pakleni Islands

An archipelago of twenty-something islands, Pakleni islands are a true wonder of nature and inevitable stop when in Hvar, Croatia. The islands are gorgeous, surrounded by turquoise waters, and full of hidden beaches, calm bays, and a few restaurants and bars here and there – a perfect spot to spend a day swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, or just chilling by the sea. The most popular places include Palmižana, located on St. Clement Island, Jerolim Island with its nude beaches, and Marinkovac with the famed Carpe Diem Beach Club.

Established in 384 BC by Greek colonists, Stari grad is not only the oldest settlement on the island, but one of the oldest continuous settlements in all of Croatia, and even in all of Europe. The old town is lovely, with its rich history, numerous churches, palaces, and cobblestone streets. Don’t miss a visit to the Tvrdalj, a former summer residence of a renaissance poet Petar Hektorovic dating back to the 16 th century.

Things to do

The majority of tourists visit Hvar to enjoy water activities including swimming, snorkeling, boating, SUP, kayaking, and other fun-under-the-sun things to do in Hvar. Hvar offers many things to do for curious travelers.

Plan a half-day or full-day wine tour of the island! Take some time to explore abandoned villages in Hvar’s interior. Go hiking and immerse yourself in the scents of rosemary, lavender, and wild oregano. Sample local cuisine!

There are many ways to get to know Hvar Island and one of them is to get to know it through its wines. Wine has been a major part of the island’s economy and lifestyle ever since ancient Greeks arrived on the island, back in the 4 th century BC. And it’s as important today, as it was back then.

Plan a half-day or full-day wine tour of the island! You can easily do it on your own, but we believe having a local guide/driver makes it so much better. A guide can give you an introductory tour, answer all your questions, and best of all, you can indulge in wine tasting all you want as you won’t need to drive. Check out this 3-hour wine-tasting tour!

Popular wine producers are Zlatan Otok, Tomić Wines, PZ Svirce, Plancic Brothers, and others. Popular sorts include red Plavac mali (Zinfandel’s offspring very popular in mid and southern Dalmatia), and pošip , a white grape native to the island of Korcula, but planted now all over southern and central Dalmatia.

Abandoned villages

Abandoned house in a village of Malo Grablje, Hvar Island

Like in other Croatian coastal regions, the locals haven’t resided in coastal towns back in the past. Believe it or not, our ancestors preferred the safety, and coziness, of mountainous interiors. They were farmers who lived off livestock, and crops. And the villages developed around fertile interiors.

But first with phylloxera, and later with industrialization and development of the modern-day tourism industry, people started migrating to the coast (or further away), abandoning their old villages, and the old way of life.

Today, these villages, although abandoned, and for a major part uninhabited, still, witness our past. When on the island, take some time to explore some of those villages. Our favorite places include Malo Grablje and Humac.

Chase authentic island scents

I’ve visited many Croatian islands, including Brac , Vis, Korcula, Elafiti , Mljet, Cres, Krk, Lošinj, Murter, Pag, Kornati, and Lastovo, but I have never felt such wonderful scents as I did on Hvar Island. Maybe it was a time of the year we’ve visited that contributed to this (we’ve been there in May when all nature awakens), or it’s really a “Hvar thing” , but I highly recommend everyone visiting the island to take a hike in nature immersed in the scents of rosemary, lavender, and wild oregano.

This small group tour takes you through Hvar’s lavender fields.

Sample local cuisine

Typical dishes here don’t differ much from the rest of Dalmatia, with few exemptions, like gregada , a fish stew typical for Hvar. Island’s dietary pattern is simple: based on boiled veggies, fresh fish, and everything soaked (yes, soaked. not sprinkled) in olive oil. For typical comfort food, head to Kokot in Dol, Stori Komin in Malo Grablje, or tavern Kod None in Svirče.

Sail to Paklinski Islands

A wonderful archipelago just off the coast of Hvar Town, Paklinski Islands are a must-visit natural site on Hvar Island. Explore hidden coves and beaches, hop from one islet to another, stop for a dip in the sea, snorkel, sunbathe, have a picnic, or chill out in one of the beach bars. Paklinski Islands are easy to visit from Hvar, just hop on a taxi boat, rent a kayak, or for the ultimate experience book a half-day sailing tour to Paklinski Islands .

Visit Vis Island and Blue Cave

Croatia has so many islands that it would take a lifetime to properly visit and experience them all. So, if you have a chance to easily visit more than one island while in Croatia, just do it! If you are staying in Hvar for more than a couple of days, visit also Vis and Bisevo’s famed Blue Cave. Many local companies offer a speedboat tour to Vis and Blue Cave . Although a visit to Blue Cave is short, just a couple of minutes, it is well worth a trip. The color of the water is mesmerizing, and it is just an overall amazing feeling to go inside the sea cave. Vis Island, on the other hand, is a wonder on its own, full of hidden coves, small pebbly beaches, amazing food, and historical intrigues.

Accommodation

Swimming pool in front of the Grand Hotel Amfora, Hvar Town

Hvar is a popular tourist destination with good infrastructure and a variety of accommodations: from hotels to private apartments, villas, youth hostels, and even camping.

The main tourist season stretches from late June to early September, with the last week of July, and two weeks of August being the peak season.

Accommodation prices skyrocket at this time. So if you want to stretch your dollar, our suggestion would be to visit the island in the second half of September or early October , when the weather is still nice, the sea is warm enough for swimming, and crowds are fewer.

Another piece of advice we can give you is to book your accommodation as early as possible . Similar to airline tickets, accommodation prices also increase with the demand, as there is less inventory on the market. This means that the earlier you book, the cheaper price you will pay.

The most popular booking site in Croatia is Booking.com . You can search for your accommodation there, as they have the largest inventory for short-term rentals and hotels in Croatia .

If you book using Booking.com, book a room with a flexible cancelation policy . This way, if your plans change, you can simply cancel your booking. Also, if for some reason, at any time, your hotel runs a promotion, you’ll be able to cancel your previous booking and secure a better deal.

For private apartments, besides Booking, check also Airbnb.

Best places to stay

Amfora Grand Beach Resort is the largest hotel on the entire island (330 rooms). Overlooking the sea, and Beach Club Hvar, this 4-star hotel features a large outdoor swimming pool, onsite buffet, a la carte restaurants, a beach, and pool grill and bar, as well as Sensori SPA center. The rooms are a bit dated, and on the smallish side, but nevertheless, they are comfy and clean. Not all rooms feature a balcony, so paying extra for the sea-facing room with the balcony is worth the money. Prices range from 155 € in the low season to 400 € in the peak season.

Adriana Spa Hotel , run by the same hotel company as Amfora, is a small, boutique hotel located in the center of Hvar Town, at the seaside promenade.  Hotel Adriana features 62 rooms, and excellent wellness and spa facilities including a seawater rooftop indoor swimming pool. Views from the rooms on higher floors are awesome. Daily prices for a double room with breakfast range from 173 € in April and November to 500 € from June to September.

B&B Heritage Villa Apolon

A lovely B&B Heritage Villa Apolon , housed in a historical villa in Stari Grad, features six rooms, an onsite restaurant, and a wine bar. The rooms are very spacious, well-equipped with all mod cons, and beautifully restored keeping many original elements like wooden beams, exposed stone walls, etc… Expect to pay for a double room with breakfast anywhere between 180 € to 240 € a day.

Villa Riva , a seafront property in Jelsa, features one double room and two studio apartments. Apartments are modern, stylish, and comfy but they still maintain the character of this traditional stone building. Prices start at 95 € per day for a double room.

If you like unique accommodation, Heritage Suites Zanini delivers it! Studio and apartments are housed in a beautiful 15th-century palace. Both, the interior and exterior are wonderful. The units feature a fully-equipped kitchen, living and sleeping area, and a full bathroom. Exposed wooden beams, brick walls, and ceramic floors only add to the Heritage Suites Zanini charm. Prices start from 180 € in the low season to 390 € in the peak season.

Food and Restaurants

If you spent some time here on our blog, you already know that we love food. Whether we eat at top-notch fine dining restaurants or humble local eateries, they all have one thing in common: they use fresh local ingredients to turn them into divine dishes.

We find that on the island of Hvar, your best bet when it comes to food is to go with traditional-dishes, and more often than not to look for traditional eateries called “konoba”; this means grilled fish, and meat with side dishes like Swiss chard, zucchini fritters, or French fries; octopus or meat with veggies, baked in a pot covered with embers, called peka ; gregada , a typical fish stew from the island.

Below you’ll find a few recommended restaurants, and more to follow in a separate blog post.

Must-try restaurants

Konoba Kokot, Dol: This family-run tavern is best-known for meat dishes, particularly for lamb meat. It’s a place to try peka , one of the most popular dishes in Croatia . But also don’t miss on yummy goat cheese made by the owner’s mum.

Stori komin, Malo Grablje: tucked away at the edge of the abandoned village of Malo grablje, Stori komin is a great place to unwind, and taste traditional Dalmatian comfort food. You can hike there, or take a small road from the village of Milna to reach Malo grablje. The food is honest, well-prepared, and tasty. Try their veal and lamb chops.

Konoba Vrisnik, Vrisnik: This family-run tavern is one of our favorite places to eat on the island. The food is authentic, freshly made, and super tasty, and the service at this local tavern is superb. Here, people come for grilled fish and meat, but also for some old island’s dishes that you can hardly find anywhere else anymore. Vrisnik, along with the neighboring villages of Vrbanj and Pitve, is also the home of some good Hvar wineries. Combine a visit to the tavern tavern Vrisnik with a visit to a couple of local wineries like PZ-Svirce, or Plancic Winery.

Oaza in Milna: Just a stone’s throw away from the beach, Oaza is a true gem meant for hedonists. The food is always fresh, tasty, and the restaurants offer great value for money. They serve anything made on a wood-burning grill, from meat, fish, and seafood, to yummy veggies soaked in olive oil. Love their zucchini fritters!

Konoba Zbondini, Velo Grablje: Once the center of rosemary and lavender production on the island, Velo Grablje today is almost completely abandoned. However, a few years ago Tudor family returned to the village to open konoba Zbondini. This lovely tavern with rustic interiors and a breezy terrace offer traditional Dalmatian dishes prepared using only fresh, local ingredients.

Where to find the best beaches

Dubovica Beach, Hvar, photo taken from the road above

When I think of Hvar, I can’t but think of the gorgeous sea, limpid, and calm, with lovely turquoise colors that simply draw you in to take a few laps or to just float endlessly.

Gromin Dolac, Jagodna, Mekicevica, Pokonji Dol, Zecja, Veliki Pokrivenik, Dubovica, Ivan Dolac, and Vela Stiniva might sound incomprehensible to you, but they are some of the most beautiful beaches on the island, and you better learn these names fast.

Just like elsewhere in Croatia, Hvar beaches are mostly rocky, and pebbly. The nicest secluded bays take a boat ride to reach or a walk in the heat, but they are all worth it.

The southern side of the island is home to some of the best beaches on Hvar island. South-east of Hvar Town, the steep shores of Zaraće, Sveta Nedilja, Ivan Dolac, and Gromin Dolac, all abound in lovely pebbly beaches; some with pebbles so tiny that they almost feel like sand.

Pakleni Islands consists of many small islands and lovely bays that make for favorite swimming spots among locals and tourists alike.

Hopeless sand beach enthusiasts head either to Jelsa  or to Sucuraj . Both towns have sandy beaches in the vicinity.

Bars, Clubs & Nightlife

The island has an infamous reputation for offering a restless, fun, crowded, and wild nightlife. In reality, this only happens in Hvar Town. And it only happens in the high season.

Carpe Diem, Hula Hula, Kiva, and Ka’Lavanda all offer day and night partying, cocktails, DJs, and good vibes. They are also all pricey. Many Hvar beach clubs are popular spots for after-beach parties.

And if your ideal holidays don’t include a load of the loud, overexcited alcohol-infused twenty-something years old, head somewhere else on the island like Jelsa or Stari Grad.

Traveling to Hvar Island

Split and Dubrovnik airports are the closest airports to Hvar island. However, regardless of the way you travel to and around Croatia, sooner or later you’ll need to board a ferry or catamaran, or just a boat, to reach the island.

If you travel to Hvar from other parts of Croatia, like Zagreb, Istria, or Zadar, you’ll need first to reach Split, Drvenik, or Dubrovnik to catch the ferry for the island.

And finally, you can book a private or shared boat transfer. For more information check the Bookaway or Get Your Guide .

The easiest way to reach Hvar Island is from Split. The Split ferry port is conveniently located just across the bus station, a few minutes walk from the old town. Three ferry companies connect Split with Hvar Island by ferry and fast-speed catamarans: Jadrolinija, Kapetan Luka, and TP Line. A car ferry, operated by Jadrolinija, sails exclusively from Split to Stari Grad on Hvar Island, and the journey takes approximately 2 hours. Fast-speed catamarans connect Split with Hvar Town, and the journey lasts around 50 minutes. You can check availability and book your tickets online here.

We have the complete guide on how to reach Hvar from Split !

A Day Tour from Split to Hvar

Many readers ask us if it’s worth taking a day tour from Split to Hvar . The answer is Yes! You can do it on your own, especially from June through September when there are many ferry crossings between the two throughout the day. However, it might just be easier and more convenient to book a small group tour from Split. Below you can find a few boat tours that we recommend.

From Dubrovnik

In high season Dubrovnik serves as one of the main gateways to Hvar Island. The best way to reach Hvar from Dubrovnik is by catamaran that runs daily from April through October.

Catamarans are operated by Jadrolinija and Kapetan Luka companies, and each has a slightly different route.

Jadrolinija’s catamaran runs daily from the second week of June to the last week of September. It departs from Dubrovnik at 7 am and arrives at Hvar at 10.30 pm. It also stops in Korcula, and after Hvar, it continues to Bol on Brac Island, and further to Split. The return trip departs from Hvar at 5.55 pm and arrives in Dubrovnik at 9.25 pm. A one-way ticket costs 45 € per person.

Kapetan Luka’s catamaran runs daily from April through October. It departs from Dubrovnik at 4.15 pm (Sept., Oct.: 4 pm) and arrives in Hvar at 7.30 pm (Sept., Oct.: 7.10 pm). This catamaran also stops in Pomena on the island of Mljet, and Korcula before arriving at Hvar, and then continues further to Milna on the island of Brac, and Split. The boat leaves Hvar for Dubrovnik at 8.40 am, and it arrives in Dubrovnik at 11.55 pm. A one-way ticket costs 45 € per person. You can book a seat online here!

From other places

Car-ferry also connects Sucuraj on the island with Drvenik near Makarska, Croatia . A car ferry runs 6 times a day in winter and as many as 11 times a day in summer. Sucuraj is at the far end of the island compared with other towns. Jelsa is approx. 50 km away from Sucuraj, and  Hvar Town is almost 80 km away.

However, a ferry crossing from the mainland takes only 35 minutes (compared with 120 minutes from Split to Stari Grad). A one-way ticket costs 3.99 € per adult and 18.96 € for a car.

Besides the mainland, you can also reach the Hvar from other islands, including Brac, Korcula, Lastovo, Mljet, and Vis Island. However, island hopping within one day is rarely done. If you plan to hop from one to another island, plan to spend at least an overnight in each of them.

The only international ferry line serving the island of Hvar is one from Ancona in Italy to Stari Grad. It’s an overnight ferry that runs year-round from Split to Ancona, but the stop in Stari Grad is only scheduled during the first two weeks of August.

Getting around

The most convenient way to travel around the island is by car, or by scooter. The main island’s road D116 runs from Hvar Town to Sucuraj and connects all major towns on the island, like Stari Grad, Jelsa, and Vrboska.

The western section of this road, around Hvar, Jelsa, and Stari Grad, is in good condition. However the more east you go toward Sucuraj the worse it gets. It becomes narrow, with patched asphalt at many places, a lack of safety barriers, and some curves especially once you pass Jelsa.

If you travel by car from the mainland, make sure you fill up gas prior to crossing onto the island. The island disposes of just three gas stations for motor vehicles: one in Hvar Town, and two in and out of Jelsa.

Another way to travel around the island is by bus. The island is served by Cazmatrans (t: +385 21 765 904), one of the national bus operators (don’t bother trying to book through their website, or just trying to retrieve the bus timetable – it simply doesn’t work). Buses connect all major towns on the island (Jelsa, Vrboska, Stari Grad, Stari Grad ferry terminal, Hvar, Sucuraj). Unfortunately, Cazmatrans doesn’t sell tickets through the GetByBus website, but it’s still a good place to check the bus schedule. You can also check the updated bus schedule in the image below.

Bus timetable for the island of Hvar valid from October 2022

There are a few things to consider if you plan to use a rental car on the island. The main consideration is whether should you rent a car on the island, or on the mainland, prior to crossing over. This decision is not always evident, and more often than not it depends on personal preferences.

Car rental in Split Airport, or elsewhere on the mainland, can provide you with a better choice of cars to hire, cheaper rental prices, and an overall better supply of rental cars.

On the other hand, hiring a car on the island gives you the opportunity to rent only for the days you will actually use it (even if the price per day comes as more expensive; you will perhaps still spend less money in total on car rental).

It also gives you a chance to skip the lines on ferries. Queues on ferries only form for the cars, and sometimes you are so far away in a queue that you need to wait for the next car ferry. This never happens if you cross on foot to the island.

Crossing to the island on foot will also give you a chance to travel directly to Hvar Town, as car ferries don’t dock in Hvar Town, only in Stari Grad or Sucuraj. Passenger-only catamarans dock in downtown Hvar Town.

Also, worth mentioning is the fact that the majority of car rental companies in Croatia will charge you a one-time fee for taking a car on ferries.

The downside of renting a car on the island is the shortage of available vehicles in the high season.  Make sure to book your car on time and well in advance.

Hope you’ve found someone, Akshata! We aren’t licensed guides.

I am looking for a local guide who can show me around Hvar Town for a group of 40 people. Can you please contact on the email

We are in the throws of planning a trip to Croatia in September 2022 and your website and guides have been invaluable :)

After several days in Dubrovnik, we are staying on Hvar in Old Town. Considering renting a car in Dub and driving to Drvenik, crossing with the car on the ferry, then driving from Sucuraj to Old Town.

Just wondering if there are any current updates on the road conditions between Sucuraj and Old Town?

So excited to go!!! Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated :)

Please read our post on visiting Croatia during Covid: https://www.frankaboutcroatia.com/visiting-croatia-during-covid-19-pandemic/ We have explained everything there.

Hi, I am hoping for a bit of current advice. Im planning a stag do for my friend for a long weekend in September. We are travelling from England, and there are 16 of us. With regards to COVID, what is the current situation for attending nightclubs? I have seen all the festivals in Pag island have been cancelled but couldn’t find any specific information for anywhere else. Also with us being such a large group are we likely to struggle with entry into bars and clubs? Finally, the group is interested in r&b music but a lot of the clubs are advertised with house/techno music – is there any city you’d recommend for that kind of music? I apologise for so many specific questions, I am struggling to find any information on this anywhere. Many thanks

You can take a rental car with you on the ferry. Make sure to mention this when renting a car as you are supposed to pay an extra insurance for the ferry transfer.

Hello! Me and my friends are travelling to Croatia this month. We are buying the ferry tickets to go from Split to Hvar, but we can’t find the option to take our rental car with us (we saw some people doing this in several vlogs). I don’t know if you know any information about this! Thank you for your attention and help!

Hi Victoriya, hm, you can do it both ways, crossing over to Hvar with a car, or without. It all depends what you want to do. Having a car on the island gives you opportunity to visit places beyond main port city (Hvar Town in your case, I suppose). You can discover all major villages on the island, visit hidden beaches, and visit the interior of the island (and eat in some traditional taverns like ones in Dol). Many hotels and private accommodation have parkings, some don’t. Check before booking. If you decide to travel with the car all the time then I wouldn’t take the ferry from Hvar to Dubrovnik. Instead I would go back to mainland and take a coastal road from Drvenik to Dubrovnik. It’s really nice and scenic. You can book tickets online on Jadrolinija website.

Hi. I am planning a trip to Croatia for group of 4, Can you suggest please. We will have a rental car and will arrive to Split by car. the next we plan visit Hvar for 2 days, and then Dubrovnik and Mostar and Montenegro. The questions is: Should we return the car in Split, and take Ferry to Hvar, and then to Dubrovnik, OR better to keep car and take a Ferry with car to Stari Grad at Hvar, use the car in HVAR (do we need car in Hvar) , and then take Ferry with car to Dubrovnik ? A 1.If we take a car to Hvar , what we going to use it for, do Hotels have parkings. and how to take car back to Dubrovnik? 2. How to plan and book tickets for Ferry , September 26. for 4 people and car, and how much it will cost, and the same thing September 28, to Dubrovnik? B if we return the car in Split, how we will be able to explore HVAR , and we would need to rent car again in Dubrovnik to travel Montenegro.

Appreciate your response.

yes, there are taxis on the island. It is more expensive than in bigger towns. You can check http://www.hvartaxi.com/ .

Is there a taxi on the island?

I’ve been to Island Hvar, Stari Grad this summer. It was just amazing! (This was my second time to visit Stari Grad) Beautiful place for charging your batteries. people are great, Croatian cuisine also and everything feels just astonishing and beautiful, There is Maslinica sand beach and we went there every day for swimming, diving and relaxing. Water is crystal clear and at the entrance, there is a lot of little natural sources of water so the water feels little cold first 10 steps but when you get in, it is real refreshment. I will definitely visit Hvar, Stari Grad again! I can write about it till tomorrow and will not be able to express myself how great it is.

Our 1st stop is the Green cave situated on the island of Ravnik, near Vis. The emerald green color comes from the sun reflecting on the stones covered with seaweed at the bottom of the cave.

Stiniva is great for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing, or if you prefer you can have a drink and relax at the beach bar.

How To Take The Ultimate Vacation On The Island Of Hvar

Take A Break  is your ultimate guide to the perfect trips to recharge, rediscover yourself and your relationships and reengage with the world. We’ll cover shopping stops, great bars, restaurants worth your money, photo opportunities, memorable experiences and other important details you need before you book.

Once a quieter, cheaper alternative to overcrowded European destinations like Italy and France, Croatia has, in recent years, become a tourism hot spot in its own right. And it’s easy to see why.

The stunning blue hues of the Adriatic Sea, impressive historical sites, abundant national parks and pop culture cachet are all part of the draw. And then, of course, there are the islands.

Often called “the Land of a Thousand Islands,” Croatia has about 1,200 islands, islets, rocks and reefs. This summer, I had the opportunity to visit one of the more popular ones ― Hvar.

Although famous for its nightlife, Hvar is about so much more than partying. Below, I’ve compiled some favorite dishes, attractions and more highlights from this Croatian paradise.

Where To Stay

I hadn’t originally planned to go to Hvar during my time in Croatia, but at a friend’s insistence that I visit the island, I booked a hotel somewhat last minute.

Although many hotels were full for the summer season, I found a great rate at the Hotel Park Hvar . It was well located near plenty of restaurants, bars and attractions, and my room had a lovely view of the Adriatic.

Another hotel-related highlight of my time in Hvar was having sunset drinks and dinner on the terrace of Palace Elisabeth . Built on the site of the former royal palace, the five-star hotel is named after the famous Austrian Empress Sisi, who was an avid traveler and helped fund the construction of an earlier iteration of the property.

While those two properties are centrally located in the hustle and bustle of Hvar Town, you can find more tranquil accommodations away from the main harbor. Some friends enjoyed their stay at Maslina Resort  in Stari Grad on the northern side of the island.

What To Eat

Fresh seafood abounds on the island of Hvar, and the offerings at Palace Elisabeth’s restaurant, San Marco, were delicious and beautifully plated. The prices made it more of a splurge meal, but that’s the case for many of the area’s dinner spots.

Gariful is another seafood restaurant that came highly recommended. Black Pepper serves classic local dishes with a contemporary twist. Don Quijote and Alavia boast breathtaking dinnertime views. And Bacchus Palmizana , which is on a nearby island, is a popular meal stop for tourists enjoying a boat day.

Keep in mind that many of Hvar’s best restaurants are only open during peak tourist season, so if you’re visiting during the winter, you’ll have fewer choices.

If seafood’s not your thing, you can skip the many fresh grilled fish, scampi, black risotto and fish stew options and opt for pasta or some traditionally prepared Croatian meat dishes with beef or lamb.

As for dessert, you’ll find lots of gelato shops as you stroll the streets after dinner. Two favorites were Aroma Gelato and Sweet Republic .

What To Drink

As noted earlier, Hvar is famous for its nightlife, so you’ll find ample bars, clubs and beach parties to check out after the sun goes down.

If you’re looking for a daytime libation or something a little more relaxed, however, don’t miss the island’s impressive wineries. One was even built in a cave and is only accessible by boat.

For a romantic candlelit tasting, there’s Dubokovic Wine . Zlatan Otok Winery  is quite picturesque. And, of course, you can also schedule a guided wine tour that will take you to multiple wineries and tasting rooms.

There’s plenty to fill your Hvar itinerary even beyond wine tours, epic restaurant meals and club nights. When I first arrived at the port, I got a taste for the area by climbing the clock tower and visiting the arsenal building, which contains a theater built in 1612 and exhibits about the history of the island.

The next stop was a hike up to the Spanish fortress, which featured gorgeous views of Hvar and the Adriatic Sea (and plenty of old cannon photo-ops). Also known as Tvrdava Fortica or Tvrdava Spanjola, the structure was built after a gunpowder explosion destroyed the original fortress in 1579.

Visitors can also hike up farther to a second fortress constructed during the Napoleonic Empire’s rule. Other historic buildings worth a visit on Hvar include the Renaissance-era Tvrdalj Castle and 15th century Franciscan Monastery.

You might prefer biking to hiking as a way to see the island, as there are many  bike routes . Renting a scooter or ATV is also an option. Don’t forget to stop and admire the beautiful lavender fields along your ride (or better yet, time your visit to coincide with the annual lavender festival ).

Still, no visit to Hvar is complete without some time spent relaxing on the stunning beaches and swimming in the sea. You can make your relaxation mobile by scheduling a boat day to explore the coasts of the nearby Pakleni islands. Palmizana is particularly popular.

Whatever you plan for your trip, don’t fret too much about fitting in every little thing. Remember to breathe and enjoy the island magic that’s drawn visitors to Hvar for centuries.

More than we could imagine

‘’Fantastic… highly recommend! The day planned was more than we could imagine (Vis tour, Roiki restaurant, swimming, caves…. ahhhhh). Listen to all the advice Ines has to offer about your trip 🙂 ’’

Carla Sakrison

Rated 4.5/5

Really fun, great staff

‘’ We did a visit to Blue cave and green Cave and it was really fun. Great staff, you can book online, and it does not feel like the other companies always stopping you on the streets to buy. I would do more things with them if I come back to Hvar. Nice island!!’’

A great day at the sea

‘’ We had a wonderful day with Hvar Tour team Rocco and Josip … Green Cave and then Blue Cave (one of the most amazing nature surprises we’ve ever seen) and stopped in Komiza for a short sightseeing and quick swim… they took us to the beach who was voted by travelers as the most beautiful one in Europe: Stiniva … A full day off land that’ll not forget and, very important, no sunburns because the boats have shade.’’

Beautiful tour, great service

‘’We had a great tour to Vis and all its beautiful beaches with the skiper Hrvoje. Concierge Ana recommended this trip to us and it was a really great experience … Would definitely recommend!’’

14 of the best beaches in Croatia

Lounge by the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic on Croatia's best beaches © Antonio Batinic / Shutterstock

First-time visitors to Croatia are often startled by the striking turquoise hue of its sea and see-straight-to-the-bottom waters.

This Mediterranean sun destination certainly has no shortage of beaches – thanks to its 1,777-km-long (1,104 miles) Adriatic coastline and close to 1,200 islands, there’s a beach for everyone. The question is, do you prefer sandy or pebbly?

The pros and cons of each are a topic of debate – some swear by the crystal-clear waters of a pebble beach not clouded by sand, while others need to feel the soft powder between their toes. In Croatia, you’ll mostly find pebble beaches nestled in the coves of rocky shorelines, but there are also many sandy exceptions.

And did you know that all beaches in Croatia are public? It’s the law! You can lay down your towel where you please – there’s no such thing as a private beach here.

Whether you’re looking for pebbly or sandy, family-friendly or sporty, we have the beach for you with our handy guide to the best beaches in Croatia.

1. Zlatni Rat, Brač Island

Croatia’s most photographed beach, Zlatni Rat , does not disappoint. Follow the pine-scented promenade from seaside Bol to this gorgeous expanse of fine, soft pebbles lapped by inky blue waters. Its astonishing V-shape changes and shifts with the tide and currents of the Adriatic Sea. The beach’s windy eastern side is a top spot for windsurfers, while the cool kids hang out at beachside Auro .

Planning tip: It’s a 30-minute stroll from Bol. An alternative is to park at Parking Zlatni Rat, a 10-minute walk away.

A small beach at the foot of a large hill backed by turquoise ocean

2. Dubovica, Hvar Island

Hvar Town revelers recover from their boozy nights at Dubovica , a tiny cove swathed with a beach of dazzling white pebbles 10km (6 miles) east of town. At its eastern end, look out for the small cave hidden in the rocky shoreline. When you’ve had enough sun, lounge under the pines at Duba Beach Bar , where cold drinks come with a chilled soundtrack.

Planning tip: After a 15-minute drive east from Hvar Town, it’s a 10-minute trek downhill along a stony zig-zagging path from the main road. Or just catch a taxi boat.

3. Sveti Jakov, Dubrovnik

It’s a 30-minute walk from the Old Town and a hike down – and back up – 160 stone steps, but Sveti Jakov gives you some breathing space from the busyness of Dubrovnik ’s main beach. And you get sublime views of the walled Old Town, which are even more spectacular as the sun goes down. Secluded it might be, but you can still rent sunbeds and umbrellas and grab a bite at the beachside bar.

Planning tip: From Pile Gate, take bus no. 8 to Sveti Jakov church. Behind the church, you’ll see steps down to the beach. Or take a taxi boat from the Old Town port.

4. Stiniva, Vis Island

Off the southern coast of Vis Island lies striking Stiniva Bay , surrounded by a near-circle of rocky cliffs with only a narrow opening to the sea. Part of its appeal is its inaccessibility – you can try to brave the steep downhill footpath from Žužeca, but most visitors arrive by boat and swim through the passage to the white pebble beach.

Planning tip: Set out early to avoid the worst of the boat traffic.

Partying at Hideout Festival on Zrće Beach

5. Zrće Beach, Pag Island

Zrće Beach is large, easy to access, amped up and offers little shade. If you’re ready to party, this is absolutely the place to be. In recent years, Zrće’s open-air beachfront Papaya Club has taken up residency on DJ Mag ’s prestigious annual Top 100 Clubs list. From June to September, the “Ibiza of Croatia” fires up with festivals, themed party weekends and guest slots from superstar DJs.

Planning tip: Zrće Beach is 3.5km (2 miles) from the port town of Novalja on Pag Island , which is linked to the mainland via a bridge.

6. Šunj, Lopud Island

One of Croatia’s loveliest sandy beaches is a dreamy day trip from Dubrovnik by boat to chilled-out Lopud Island in the Elaphiti archipelago. Walk from the main port through the pine woods to the wide sandy beach at Šunj, where you can set yourself up for the day on the soft sands or on a shaded sunbed. The shallow waters here make this a favorite of families with small kids, while the eastern end of the beach is reserved for naturists. There’s a simple restaurant, too, and if you don't want to walk 25 minutes from the harbor, hire one of the golf cart taxis to take you there.

Planning tip: The ferry trip from Dubrovnik's Gruž port takes just under an hour and stops at Sipan island on the way.

7. Stračinska, Šolta Island

Šolta is so close to Split , but it seems to slip under people’s radar in the headlong rush to reach Hvar and Brač . But this wonderfully laid-back island has a deeply indented coastline sheltering tiny beaches, including the pebbly cove at Stračinska Bay. It’s a tiny, secluded spot lined with fragrant pine trees and rocky shores – and that’s about it. No bar, just sparkling blue-green waters perfect for lazy swims and snorkeling.

8. Cape Kamenjak, Istria

The shoreline of this rugged and rocky peninsula on Istria 's southernmost tip is traced by quiet bays and coves. Its western coast is ideal for swimming and snorkeling, while its breezy eastern side is where the windsurfers congregate. When it's time to seek out some shade and refreshments, head to the quirky Safari Beach Bar , a local favorite.

9. Plaža Ušće (Delta Beach), Neretva Delta

Kitesurfers and windsurfers – you’ve found one of the best beaches in Croatia to fly across the sands and waves of Plaža Ušće. Delta Beach, as it’s known in English, is the wide sandy expanse that hugs the delta of the Neretva River as it empties into the Adriatic. Gaze at the beautiful mountains of the Pelješac peninsula in front of you as you flop on the sands and order a cold drink in the simple little beach bar.

10. Lopar peninsula, Rab Island

The Lopar peninsula is where you can find some of Croatia’s best sandy beaches. Just over a mile long, half-moon-shaped Paradise Beach is the biggest and most family-friendly, thanks to its shallow waters. For something more secluded and untamed, head to the beaches on the northern edge of the peninsula. Here, rocky outcrops stretch like long fingers into the sea with sheltered coves and swathes of golden sand nestled in between.

Planning tip: Ciganka and Sahara beaches are “clothing optional” – ideal for those who like to take it all off before diving in. Stolac beach is exclusively nudist.

Families enjoy the dappled sunshine on a stony beach

11. Punta Rata, Brela

The rocky coastline around the town of Brela , on the stretch of the Dalmatian mainland known as the Makarska Riviera, is made up of a succession of pretty, pebbly beaches. This 300m (1,000ft) pebble beach with see-right-to-the-bottom waters is popular with local families. Its Aleppo pines provide some welcome shade from the scorching summer sun. Take your mask and snorkel to the waters around the tree-covered Brela Stone at the beach’s western end to explore the underwater world.

Planning tip: This is a good spot for some water sports, with stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, pedal boats and jet skis available to rent. There are also outfits offering parasailing experiences.

12. Lubenice, Cres Island

From Lubenice , a scenic hamlet perched on the edge of a 378m-high (1,240ft) cliff, Cres Island 's most idyllic beach seems tantalizingly close but can only be reached via a steep and demanding one-hour descent along a rocky path. The intrepid are awarded by pristine white pebbles and turquoise waters, but so are those arriving by boat – a much better idea. Half a mile southwards in nearby Žanje Bay is the magical Blue Cave with a small pebble beach tucked inside.

Planning tip: There are no beach bars or food stalls – bring food and sufficient water.

13. Sunčana Uvala, Lošinj Island

On Lošinj Island ’s western coast lies Sunčana Uvala (Sunny Cove), skirted with white pebble beaches and impossibly turquoise waters. Shadowed by a large hotel, lovely Veli Žal beach can get busy with families. In this case, follow the promenade southwards along a rocky coastline to the smaller but just as pristine Borik beach, a favorite with local beachgoers. Afterward, kick back with a cocktail as you ogle the sunset from Borik Mediterranean Bar .

14. Veruda Island beach, Istria

Hop on a boat from Pula for the short ride to tiny Veruda Island – known by locals as Fratarski Otok (Friar's Island). This is home to Croatia’s only “eco-beach” thanks to its undeveloped and unblemished landscape, as well as local efforts to protect its plant, sea and animal life. It’s also delightfully car-free.

Planning tip: Bunk down for the night at the tourist camp and wake up to the sound of water lapping the shore.
