40 Minute Seal Colony Cruise

This is an exciting 40 minute cruise from hout bay harbour to duiker island the seal colony where you can view thousands of wild cape fur seals, close up in their natural habitat..

There are 35 species of seals in the world. Duiker Island is a Cape Fur Seal and bird sanctuary, home to thousands of seals and many birds such as the Cape Cormorant, the Bank Cormorants, Black Back Gulls, Kelp Gulls and Hartlaub Gulls.

It is illegal to go onto the island. The majority of the seals on Duiker Island are males waiting out their time until they reach the right breeding age, which is between the ages of 8 to 12 years depending on their size. Duiker Island is not a breeding colony as the sea can get very rough and the pups get swept off. The island is most densely populated from January through March due to the seals moulting. During this period they do not go off in search of food but rely on fats they have stored in their blubber.

Breeding is a continuous cycle and takes place in November/December in breeding colonies around the coastline of South Africa and Namibia. After fertilization there is a dormant period of 4 months and thereafter development continues, making the active gestation period 8 months. The pups are then born in late November early December. A cow usually only has one pup at a time when she reaches the breeding age which is 4-5 years old. She knows her pup by its smell and call and she will only mother her own offspring. Pups are entirely dependent on milk for the first 6 months. They are weaned between 8-10 months old.

They grow quickly and start to swim at 6 weeks old. By about 7 months they can spend 2-3 days at sea on their own and can already swim long distances. It has been noted that tagged seals have swum from Cape Town to Cape Cross in Namibia, a distance of 1600 kms at the age of 8 months. The Cape Fur Seal dives to a depth of 36m on average but diving abilities varies between species. Their ears and nostrils close tightly when they dive and they cannot breathe underwater. Even while sleeping in the water they have to surface to breathe, every 10-15 minutes for young ones and 30 minutes for the adults.

• Seals can hear quite well in the air but their hearing underwater is much better.
• Their ability to tell what direction a sound is coming from is very good.
• Their eyes are adapted to see both on land and in the water.
• They maintain a constant body temperature of 38.5 C
• Bulls can weigh up to 350 kgs and cows up to 113 kgs

In 2001, Circe Launches proudly unveiled our latest addition, the Calypso. This exceptional 82-foot passenger vessel was purposefully constructed to provide an unforgettable experience. Crafted with a robust steel hull, Calypso offers seating for over 100 passengers on deck, as well as ample indoor seating. What sets Calypso apart is its unique design, featuring two meter-square viewing ports at the boat’s bottom. Through these extraordinary windows, passengers can marvel at the enchanting kelp forests and abundant marine life that thrive beneath the ocean’s surface.

Calypso, measuring 22 meters in length and weighing 78 gross tons, was built at our workshop right here in Hout Bay. We specifically engineered our custom-built vessel to navigate the shallow waters and challenging conditions encountered during our seal island cruises. With a flawless track record spanning more than 50 years, Circe Launches prides itself on maintaining the utmost safety standards.

Being our flagship vessel, Calypso can carry up to 100 passengers. It boasts 50 comfortable seats indoors and an additional 100 seats outdoors, with 50 of them sheltered from the elements. A slow cruise or an adrenaline adventure Our boat rides are unique and can be tailored to your needs. On this trip lasting 1 hour, we take you on a cruise through the Harbour area and around the Bay, stopping at all the scenic spots along the way. We exit the Bay towards Noordhoek, where we view the highest point of Chapman’s Peak and Slangkop Lighthouse in the distance. We ride across towards Llandudno, going as far as Sandy Bay. We return via the crane wreck of the BOSS 400 in Maori Bay, and Duiker/Seal Island, where we stop and view the resident seal colony. Experience spectacular views of Chapman’s Peak, the Sentinel and Karbonkelberg and the world famous Dungeons area. We will stop to appreciate any significant sea life that we come across. Our boat is built for speed, but we will go as fast or as slow as is comfortable. We do specific speed runs for the adrenalin junkies, with high speed turns included. Our boat, CAWSAW, is an 8.5 m Gemini semi-rigid, with two 4-stroke 200 HP Yamaha Engines. It complies with all the regulations set by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA). The SAMSA approved safety equipment on board includes a radio, life jackets, a first aid kit and flares. The boat can accommodate up to 10 Passengers. There are always two crew members on board, consisting of the skipper and a deck hand. Our skippers and deck hands have over twenty years experience at sea.

We depart from and return to Millers Point near the Black Marlin Restaurant, or from Buffels Bay as part of a Beach Day in Cape point. There is no jetty at Buffels Bay, therefore, clients will be paddled out to the Power Boats in inflatable canoes.

Get Face-To-Face with Sharks

Our Shark Cage Diving excursions take place in Kleinbaai, just next to Gansbaai, famous for its high concentration of Great White Sharks.  Once aboard the boat it’s a short but beautiful cruise out to Dyer Island, home to a colony of Cape Fur Seals and hunting ground to the Great Whites.

There will be a short briefing beforehand on the history and behaviour of the infamous Great White Shark and the Crew on board will instruct visitors on usage of equipment and procedures on how to spot a shark before you don wetsuits and lower yourself into the cage.

This is a beautifully informative walking tour showcasing the unique graffiti culture in Woodstock and Cape Town.  Visitors will learn how in 2010 a street artist started a street art revolution in Woodstock. By asking residents if they would allow him to paint on open walls showing them the art before painting and getting their permission first, making this work legal.  This flipped the stereotype of this subculture on it's head and showcased the positivity of the artform.

This has inspired other local and international artists to come and work in the area. A local qualified guide will take you on a walk that takes you through this alternative art form.We meet up at the local creative shopping centre called The Woodstock Exchange and depart from there.

Sunset Cruise

Nauticat Charters offers a Sunset Cruise out of Hout Bay Harbour on the first Saturday of every month and throughout the year on special request.

A glass of Champagne is served on arrival and there is a fully stocked bar on board for you to purchase further refreshments.

minimum of 40 passengers is required for a special requested Sunset Cruise.

The duration of the cruise is 1,5 hrs and the departure time will be dependent on the season and the time the sun is setting on the given day.

Price for Adults: R 380.00 per person

Price for Children under 12: R 175.00 per person
