Police ask for tips as new video shows Idaho students hours before their deaths

by Hannah Everman, KOMO News Staff

MOSCOW, Idaho — Two of the four slain University of Idaho students were seen hours before their deaths ordering food from a late-night food truck in Moscow, Idaho, giving investigators new clues into the timeline leading up to the quadruple homicide on Nov. 13.

Madison Mogen, 21, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, are heard on the video from Grub Wandering Kitchen ordering food at about 1:40 a.m. Sunday.

They wait about 10 minutes for their food. Video shows them chatting with each other and other people standing by the truck.

Joseph Woodall, 26, who manages the food truck, told CNN the two students did not seem to be in distress or in any danger.

RELATED: No suspect or motive identified in killing of University of Idaho students

During a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Moscow Police Chief James Fry confirmed his department was aware of the food truck footage, which was livestreamed on Twitch, and asked for the community to send any other media to build a more robust timeline for investigators.

According to Fry, Mogen and Goncalves were at a downtown bar Saturday night before arriving at the food truck.

The other two victims, Ethan Chaplin, 20, of Mount Vernon, Wash., and Xana Kernodle, 20, were at a party on campus.

They went home sometime before 2 a.m. The police chief said the group was murdered during the early-morning hours Sunday. There were no signs of forced entry into the apartment where their bodies were found later Sunday afternoon.

Fry also clarified an earlier statement about the dangers his community still faces with no suspect information or motive .

"We cannot say there is no threat to the community, as we’ve said please stay vigilant, report any suspicious activity and be aware of your surroundings at all times," Fry said.

He confirmed a knife was used to kill the four students. Investigators have not found that murder weapon.

Grub Wandering Kitchen, also known as Grub Truck, has been serving the city of Moscow since 2013. But owner John Fletcher had a rocky road to travel before it's opening.

"I had just had my second restaurant fail miserably up in Spokane so I was broke," said Fletcher.

Broke, back at square one working for a friend at South Fork restaurant in Pullman, and a whole lot of adversity of face. But as you've probably heard, out of adversity comes opportunity.

"I found a box truck on craigslist for fifteen hundred bucks, I just kind of bought it on a whim. Two years, two months later I had it finished so...that's what I could do. You know wasn't so much a choice but like if I wanted to stay in the industry, stay an owner I had to scale down," explained Fletcher.

A mobile food truck seems like the perfect recipe for operating during a pandemic, but not necessarily.

Fletcher noted, "Well we decided to close down for the couple months that the bars were closed."

Grub truck parks right outside of the Garden Lounge in Moscow targeting late night bar-goer's passing by as his customers, but John wasn't in as much of a rush to re-open as other small business owners.

"Honestly I feel a little guilty about trying to like you know slam my business over the top during these times. You know I don't want to try and talk people into going out when they don't want to be out in public," said Fletcher.

With this in mind, after Grub Truck shut down for four month, John made sure to make everyone feel as safe as possible.

"We've also required masks from everyone who stops by. Because even though it is outdoors, once you're up there paying your face is about a foot or two from the cashier's face so six or eight hundred people come through over a course of a week, that makes the cashier feel pretty unsafe," added Fletcher.

After experiencing going out of business with one of his restaurants, which went under during the recession, John learned his lesson and was prepared for whatever the pandemic was going to bring this time around. He survived this time because...

"Probably you know keep a good cash reserve. And yeah don't live to close to the edge of your means financially," concluded Fletcher.

Grub Truck as we said earlier is located outside of the Garden Lounge in Moscow, located at 313 S Main St. You can checkout their full menu of nine different mac and cheese flavors and other menu items on their website, www.thegribtruck.com. Their current hours during the pandemic are Wednesday through Saturday from 10 P.M. to 1:30 A.M.

We appreciate everyone's efforts to support their local small businesses during these trying times. If you would like to get your business featured on our newscast, send us an email at [email protected], we will get back to you as soon as possible.

A late-night food truck camera appeared to show 2 of the Idaho victims hours before they were found dead

MOSCOW, Idaho — A livestream from a late-night food truck appears to have recorded two college students ordering food hours before authorities found them and two others fatally stabbed at an off-campus home , video obtained Wednesday by NBC News shows.

The video appears to show the University of Idaho students ordering “mac of the week” and carbonara at the food truck amid a rush of customers early Sunday. The livestream was broadcast on the platform Twitch by Grub Wandering Kitchen, which owns the food truck.

Joseph Woodall, who manages the truck, said they appear to have been there between 1:30 a.m. and 1:40 a.m.

A video still appears to show two of the Idaho victims at a food truck before the incident.

Woodall described the downtown food truck as one of Moscow’s only late-night options for hospital workers and students going to house parties or bars.

It is not clear where the pair went after they left the area, roughly 10 minutes after they appear to have arrived. Moscow Police Chief James Fry told reporters Wednesday that the four victims —  Ethan Chapin, 20; Madison Mogen, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Kaylee Goncalves, 21 — were most likely killed in the "early morning hours" Sunday.

Fry did not identify which two victims were seen in the video. He said the livestream had helped provide investigators with “a time and space where two of our victims were.”

NBC News has not identified which victims were apparently seen in the video.

Two of the victims — Chapin and his girlfriend, Kernodle — had been at a party that night, Fry said. Mogen and Goncalves had been at a downtown bar. Fry said the four friends arrived at the off-campus home where they were found slain after 1:45 a.m.

Kernodle, Mogen and Goncalves lived at the house, which is about a mile from the food truck, said a neighbor and friend of Chapin's, Ellie McKnight.

Authorities found their bodies after a 911 caller reported an "unconscious" person just before noon Sunday, police have said. No suspect has been identified, and the murder weapon has not been found.

Investigators have found no evidence of forced entry, Fry said.

Authorities believe that two other roommates who also lived at the home were there when the killings occurred and that they were not injured. Fry declined to provide additional details about the roommates, citing the investigation, and he said he did not know why no one called 911 until 11:58 a.m.

"Wouldn’t we love for that to have happened?" he told reporters. "Yes. But that’s not how it took place. So we’re — that’s why we’re investigating everything still to try to pull all the pieces together."

Autopsies are expected to be completed this week, police have said.

The video surfaced as Fry walked back previous comments that there is no ongoing threat after victims' families criticized how authorities have handled the investigation.

Slain Idaho Students Appear to Be Seen on Twitch Video at Food Truck Hours Before They Were Murdered

Four University of Idaho students were found stabbed to death in an off-campus home on Sunday. No suspects have been named or arrested at this time

grub wandering kitchen

As investigators piece together a timeline of the hours leading up to the killings of four University of Idaho students , two of the victims appear to be seen ordering food from a late-night food truck in a livestream video.

In the video, which was has been shared widely on social media , it appears that Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves order food from the truck. The video was broadcast on Twitch — a live-streaming platform — by Grub Wandering Kitchen, which owns the food truck, NBC News reports.

After waiting for the food for around 10 minutes, the two women — who are believed to be Mogen and Goncalves — leave the area. When they leave, an unidentified person who appeared to arrive at the food truck with the two women, but did not order food, raises his hand in their direction, then also walks out of frame quickly.

During a Wednesday press conference, Moscow Police Chief James Fry said authorities are aware of the video — and said it has helped in the investigation.

"It gives us a time and space that we knew where two of our victims were, and that helps us a ton and we'll continue to follow up all leads we can and continue to gather those," Fry said.

The food truck manager, Joseph Woodall, told CNN that the two women did not seem to be in distress or danger when he saw them.

Around noon on Sunday, Madison Mogen, 21, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Ethan Chapin, 20, and Xana Kernodle, 20, were found dead from apparent stab wounds in an off-campus apartment.

No suspects have been named or arrested at this time.

Fry said that before the killings, Chapin and Kernodle were at a party on campus while Mogen and Goncalves were at a bar downtown. They all returned home around 1:45 a.m. on Sunday, police said, and their bodies were discovered around noon after a call came in about an unconscious person at the residence.

Two additional roommates were home during the attack but were unharmed, Fry said, but he declined to label them as witnesses. Fry said there was no sign of forced entry at the apartment, and nothing was missing from the home.

Chapin did not live at the home, but was sleeping over with his girlfriend Kernodle, Chapin's mother Stacy Chapin told KING 5 .

Fry also walked back earlier statements by authorities that said there was no threat to the public because this was an "isolated, targeted attack."

"We do not have a suspect at this time, and that individual is still out there," Fry said during the news conference. "We cannot say there is no threat to the community."

He stressed that the community should "remain vigilant."

The Moscow Police Department is asking anyone who may have information about the killings to call 208-883-7054.

How did things unfold before, after University of Idaho killings? A timeline of events

The Moscow community is still reeling as police say there is no suspect in the killings of four University of Idaho students near campus.

Police said they are investigating any leads that might help them find who committed the crime.

Police Chief James Fry said law enforcement hopes to retrace the steps of the victims the night leading up to the killings and find out who had contact with them.

“Investigators are working to develop a timeline of relevant events,” Fry said at a Wednesday news conference.

Fry said that a timeline, along with evidence at the scene, can help find leads to point them toward a suspect.

The victims were U of I seniors Madison Mogen, 21, of Coeur d’Alene, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum; junior Xana Kernodle, 20, of Post Falls; and freshman Ethan Chapin, 20, of Conway, Washington.

The Idaho Statesman has put together relevant events from Saturday and Sunday that have been disclosed so far by Fry, other authorities, and family members or others with reliable information, and also included some things of note from this week. We’ll update this timeline as more information becomes available.

Saturday, Nov. 12

Starting at 8 p.m.

Chapin and Kernodle, who were dating, were at a party at the Sigma Chi fraternity on campus Saturday night. Chapin was a member of Sigma Chi.

10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.

Mogen and Goncalves were at the Corner Club bar in downtown Moscow, which describes itself as “dive/sports/local bar.” They took an Uber to the bar, according to Alivea Goncalves, one of Kaylee’s sisters, and also home from downtown.

All arrived home sometime in the neighborhood of 1:45 a.m. Sunday, according to a map provided by the Moscow Police Department.

Sunday, Nov. 13

Twitch livestream appeared to show Mogen and Goncalves buying food at a downtown food truck called the Grub Wandering Kitchen, also known as Grub Truck.

Grub Wandering Kitchen usually parks on North Main Street in front of the Garden Lounge, about 0.2 miles south of the Corner Club.

“We are heartbroken, and sending our love to the family and friends of Kaylee, Madison, Xana and Ethan,” the food truck posted on Twitter.

1:45 a.m. to 2 a.m.

All four students were back at the six-bedroom house on King Road.

The three women, Kernodle, Mogen and Goncalves, lived there with at least two other roommates. Chapin was staying the night with Kernodle.

2 a.m. to 5 a.m.

This is when Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt said the homicides occurred. Moscow Mayor Art Bettge previously told the Statesman that police told him they believed the deaths were 3-4 a.m.

Two roommates were home at the time of the killings, police have said. The roommates heard something, according to Chapin’s mother, Stacy, though she did not get into details.

Idaho State Police spokesman Aaron Snell told ABC News on Thursday that the roommates were being cooperative and may be “key” to solving the crime. “Potentially they are witnesses, potentially they are victims,” Snell said. But he added: “We’re not focusing just on them. We’re focusing on everybody that may be coming and going from their residence.”

Moscow police received a call about an unconscious person at a home on King Road near the University of Idaho. Police arrived and found the four students dead.

A friend made the phone call, according to Chapin’s mother. Police have not said who called 911.

The university posted an alert on social media that said police were investigating a homicide on King Road. The post said the suspect was not known and advised students to stay away from the area and shelter in place.

The school put out a second alert saying police did not believe there was an active threat, and the “shelter in place” advisory had been lifted. The alert warned students to “remain vigilant.”

Police confirmed the homicides for the first time in a news release.

”This is an ongoing investigation,” the release said. “Information will be updated as soon as next of kin is notified and we have information we can share. The Moscow Police Department gives our heartfelt condolences to family members, friends and the Moscow community.”

Monday, Nov. 14

The Moscow Police Department identified the four victims and confirmed that all four were students at the University of Idaho. The department said in a news release that no one was in custody and repeated that it did not believe there was an ongoing risk to the community.

Moscow Mayor Art Bettge called the event a “senseless act of violence” in a press release. A couple of hours later, Idaho State Board of Education President Kurt Liebech said in a statement that the students were murdered. Around the same time, Idaho football coach Jason Eck spoke about the students and also said they were murdered during a press conference with associate athletic director Jerek Wolcott.

Tuesday, Nov. 15

Moscow police confirmed in a press release that an “edged weapon such as a knife” had been used to kill the victims but the weapon had not been located. The department continued to tell the community that there was “no imminent threat.”

Ethan Chapin’s mother, Stacey Chapin, told the Idaho Statesman that the four victims died in a stabbing.

“They were stabbed. We got the call,” Chapin said. “I don’t want people to make assumptions about our kids. It wasn’t drugs and it was definitely not some passion thing between these kids. Someone entered the house.”

Latah County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Mikolajczyk told the Statesman community members were leaving town as a result of the incident. Mikolajczyk said he’d seen students leaving as early as Monday, a week before Thanksgiving break.

Katelyn Hettinga, a senior at U of I, told the Statesman that many university professors canceled classes for the rest of the week and postponed homework assignments.

The FBI confirmed that it was assisting Moscow police with the investigation. An Idaho State Police spokesperson confirmed that the FBI had arrived on Monday and that state police had been assisting Moscow police since Sunday.

Wednesday, Nov. 16

Latah County coroner Cathy Mabbutt told Spokane’s KXLY-TV that preliminary investigations showed the four victims had been stabbed to death.

The Statesman reported that police were searching for a “Rambo-style knife” and had visited several Moscow-area stores inquiring about a variety of combat knives. One of the knives police were asking about was a Ka-Bar, which is a military-grade blade .

“They were specifically asking whether or not we carry Ka-Bar-style knives, which we do not,” said Scott Jutte, general manager of Moscow Building Supply, in an interview.

Moscow and state police, along with university officials, held a joint press conference addressing the media for the first time since the bodies were found Sunday. Moscow Police Chief James Fry said he “probably should have been standing here a day or so ago.”

Fry backtracked on the possibility of ongoing danger, saying he could not confirm there was no threat to the community and that residents should “remain vigilant.”

A handful of new details emerged during the press conference, including that there was no sign of forced entry into the house and that two other women in the house were home and were not injured.

Thursday, Nov. 17

Moscow School District superintendent Greg Bailey told the Statesman that ISP officers had replaced Moscow Police Department officers patrolling the area to free up the Moscow police to work on the investigation. The district announced the news in a Facebook post .

County coroner Mabbutt told the Moscow-Pullman Daily News the weapon used would have had to have been a “large knife.”

Mabbutt confirmed the DNA samples from clothing, bedding and nail clippings still needed to be tested at a forensics lab.

A report on the autopsies posted to Facebook listed “Homicide — Murder” as the cause of death.

Hundreds of students, staff members and Boise residents gathered for a vigil at Boise State University to honor the lives of the four victims.

Boise State invited students who personally knew the victims to speak. One student read a statement on behalf of a student named Carly, who was said to be a friend of the three female victims.

Snell, the Idaho State Police spokesperson, told the Statesman the autopsies were complete, but the report would not be released to the public.

Friday, Nov. 18

The Moscow police said in a  press release  that detectives do not believe the two surviving roommates or a male seen in food truck surveillance video are involved with the crime.

Police said “online reports of the victims being tied and gagged are not accurate,” adding that autopsy results showed no sign of sexual assault.

The Moscow Police Department said detectives have seized the contents of three dumpsters on King Road to locate potential evidence, and have received nearly 500 tips and conducted 38 interviews.

Tips on relevant information

The FBI, Latah County Sheriff’s Office and the Idaho State Police are assisting the Moscow Police Department, which has at least 25 investigators working the case.

They ask anyone with information about the victims’ whereabouts the night of their deaths or other relevant information to call the case’s tip line at 208-883-7180. The University of Idaho announced on Twitter that tips can be emailed to the Moscow police at [email protected] .
