My childhood was spent in the Blue Ridge Mountains — camping in the Peaks of Otter and canoeing down the James River — and my college years brought me to Williamsburg, where history and higher education go hand in hand with waterfront views. Now, I’m a resident of Charlottesville, a small city within driving distance of Shenandoah National Park and Virginia’s Wine Country.

Smith Mountain Lake

Reuter Engle, whose family has been in Middleburg for generations, admits that while she may be biased, the historic town has plenty to do and see in every season. Her must-experience list includes: “ Christmas in Middleburg’s traditional hunt parade that draws thousands each year; the Middleburg Film Festival in the fall; Historic Garden Week in the spring; and equestrian activities galore in the fall and spring, such as the Middleburg Spring Races, the Virginia Gold Cup, and the Upperville Colt & Horse Show.”

Travelers may know Lexington for its association with Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and Washington & Lee University, but it also boasts one of the most interesting outdoor entertainment venues. Virginia has some of the country’s oldest mountains, but you can’t forget about its oceanfront destinations — namely, Virginia Beach. “I grew up a surfer kid at the beach, and I feel so at home there,” says Hodson, sharing that the ViBe Creative District , in particular, is notable for its “great coffee shops and restaurants.” He recommends grabbing a drink or a bite at Three Ships Coffee and The Pink Dinghy, which sit right next to one another.

“Just about an hour outside of Washington, D.C., these two spots on either side of Paris, Virginia are perfect for experiencing the natural beauty of our state with a good hike or walk outside,” explains Reuter Engle. Sky Meadows State Park is especially beautiful during the fall when foliage is at its peak. While in the area, she recommends stopping at The Ashby Inn for lunch and picking up local produce at Hollin Farms .

Just like the city of Bath in England, Bath County, Virginia gets its name from its natural healing waters. You can experience them for yourself by making a reservation at the recently renovated Warm Springs Pools , part of The Omni Homestead Resort . Travelers interested in the more agricultural side of the county can opt to stay at Apple Horse Farm , a sustainable cattle and pig farm with a standalone cabin available for short-term rentals.

Shenandoah National Park

Reuter Engle says travelers can expect “picturesque hiking” in Shenandoah National Park, where 500 miles of trails lead hikers to waterfalls, scenic landscapes, and remnants of pioneer history. One of the most popular paths is Old Rag, a 9.1-mile loop trail that’s labeled as “difficult.” If you can handle a bit of rock scrambling, though, the views are completely worth the climb.

Richmond is officially on the radar for travelers seeking great food and beer, cultural attractions, and outdoor adventures – all without the crowds and price tag of more established tourist towns. 

Once you’ve had your fill of Virginia’s capital city, you’re also in the perfect position to explore the rest of the Commonwealth. From its convenient location smack in the center of Virginia, Richmond is an easy drive – or train ride – from the coast, the mountains, and the countryside. Here are the seven best day trips from Richmond , Virginia.

1. The Historic Triangle

Why go?  To take a step back in time to the earliest days of the American colonies.

Virginia’s Historic Triangle – Jamestown, Yorktown and Williamsburg – is located less than an hour away from Richmond, making this an ideal day trip. Follow the scenic Colonial Parkway to explore historic sites including the first English settlement at Jamestown and the Yorktown battlefield where the Revolutionary War ended. Wrap up at the world’s largest living history museum in Colonial Williamsburg , where you can see what life was like in colonial times before grabbing a bite to eat in the nearby Merchant’s Square.

How to get to Virginia’s Historic Triangle: Follow Interstate 64 east for about 50 miles (under an hour) to reach Williamsburg. Yorktown and Jamestown are about 10 minutes farther on. Public transportation is limited, so a car is recommended to navigate this area.

2. Virginia's Northern Neck

Why go?  Because you don’t have to drive all the way to Virginia Beach to find sandy shores and briny oysters.

Virginia’s Northern Neck region follows the western shores of Chesapeake Bay, with tiny fishing villages and historical sites scattered throughout. Start in charming Irvington for a cup of coffee at The Local and then head over to the Tides Inn for lunch with views over the water at Fish Hawk Oyster Bar. Choose from state parks like Westmoreland and Belle Isle for walking and biking trails through the scenic wetlands. On your way back to Richmond, swing by Merroir Tasting Room to sample oysters from the celebrated farms of Rappahannock Oyster Company .

How to get to Virginia’s Northern Neck: Head east of the city on Interstate 64 and then hop on Route 33 to reach the remote wilds of these wetlands. You’ll reach Irvington in about an hour, but you could spend an entire day getting lost on these pretty country roads if you wanted.

Why go?  To stroll across Civil War battlefields and sip award-winning bourbon.

Fredericksburg is a quaint college town about an hour north of Richmond. The 40-block historic district is brimming with charming shops and restaurants. Try to snag a spot at the seasonally inspired Foode , located in a restored bank building. Just outside of town, you can tour numerous Civil War battlefields; visit George Washington’s boyhood home at Ferry Farm ; and get a taste of another sort of history at the A. Smith Bowman Distillery , the oldest bourbon in Virginia.

How to get to Fredericksburg: Fredericksburg is a straight up Interstate 95 about an hour’s drive from Richmond. You can also reach the city via Amtrak train. There’s a direct route from Richmond’s Main Street Station to downtown Fredericksburg.

4. Virginia Wine Country

Why go ? To sample wine from one of the East Coast’s buzziest growing regions.

More than 300 wineries are located in 10 distinct growing regions in Virginia, and those in the central part of the Commonwealth are known as the Monticello AVA (American Viticultural Area) . This pastoral region located on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains is known for its fertile clay soil and long growing season. With roots reaching all the way back to Thomas Jefferson’s early experimentation with European grape varieties, wines in this region tend to have a complex old-world flavor with a modern twist. From stately Barboursville Vineyards and picturesque Pippin Hill to the quirky Merrie Mill Farm and Vineyard in Keswick, there’s a winery to suit every style of sipper.

How to get to Virginia Wine Country: Head west from Richmond to find some of Virginia’s top wineries, many of which are scattered around the rolling countryside about an hour from the city. You’ll need a car to navigate these country roads, but wine tours are available (and a safer bet than driving).

5. Appalachian Mountains

Why go?  To see why this part of the Appalachian Mountain range is known as the Blue Ridge.

If you’re craving more dramatic landscapes than Richmond’s gentle hills, head west toward the Appalachian Mountain range for miles of hiking trails, picturesque parkways and breathtaking vistas. Point your GPS toward Rockfish Gap – from this point you can drive north into the Shenandoah National Park on Skyline Drive or head south onto the Blue Ridge Parkway . On either of these scenic drives, you’ll find numerous hiking trails and overlooks where you can pull off to enjoy the views. If you’re road tripping in the winter, you may want to pop down to Wintergreen Resort for a day of skiing.

How to get to the Appalachian Mountains: Drive west of Richmond and you’ll see mountains appear on the horizon within about an hour. You’ll be right in the midst of those mountains not long after that. You will need a car to navigate this rural region.

6. Washington, DC

Why go? Because it’s totally doable to hit up DC’s highlights in just one day.

Sure, the nation’s capital warrants a proper visit of its own, but at just about two hours from Richmond, it’s also a very manageable day trip, especially if you take the train and bypass traffic. Leave Richmond early in the morning and you’ll have plenty of time to visit your favorite Smithsonian museum and walk or bike around the monuments. Depending on the season, you may prefer to schedule in some sports:  D.C. United , the Washington Nationals and the Washington Capitals are just a few of the teams based here. Grab some grub at a food hall like Union Market or The Roost before hopping back on the train to return to Richmond.

How to get to Washington, DC : If you’re driving up Interstate 95 to reach DC from Richmond, you’ll want to time your trip carefully – traffic can be brutal in northern Virginia. To make the trip easier, take an Amtrak train from one of Richmond’s two train stations. Two hours later, you’ll be right in the heart of the city at Washington DC’s Union Station.

7. Charlottesville

Why go?  To experience a small Southern city that balances modern innovation with history and heritage.

Home to the University of Virginia, Charlottesville is a historic town with a refreshingly youthful energy. Visit the pedestrian-friendly Downtown Mall to explore the local shops and restaurants, many of which offer outdoor seating on the shady sidewalk. Nearby Monticello offers a fascinating glimpse into the life and mind of Thomas Jefferson, while Carter Mountain Orchard is a favorite stop for apple-picking and cider-sipping in the fall. 

How to get to Charlottesville: The city is about an hour’s drive west of Richmond on Interstate 64. You’ll need a car to get here.

Narrowing down fun Virginia Day Trips can be difficult because there are so many historic places and beaches too. Excursions, adventures and historic places abound in Virginia, a state rich with history. T he best way to enjoy day trips in Virginia is to make them throughout the year and visit as many places as you like.

As one of the 13 original colonies, history is at every turn in the beautiful state of Virginia. The first permanent English settlement was at Jamestown. in 1607.

Virginia Day Trips to historic places

Located in Coastal Virginia; Jamestown, Yorktown, and Williamsburg together are called the Historic Triangle for their historical significance and close proximity. Jamestown Settlement and Historic Jamestown are two separate places. Williamsburg and Colonial Williamsburg are two places. Colonial Williamsburg is a recreation for tourist of the original settlement. Jamestown Settlement is a recreation of the place the original English settlers landed and made their fort and home near the port. You can take day trips from Williamsburg to visit all three places in one day.

Virginia is home to eight U.S. Presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor and Woodrow Wilson. We have included a visit to the home of George Washington, Mt. Vernon in our list of day trips in Virginia .

Fast forward a few years to around 1781 at Yorktown where General Cornwallis surrendered to General George Washington. We visited Yorktown on our vacation to Williamsburg and stood on the spot where the battle took place. We were there on a Day trip with the Oleta Bus Tour which is listed below. I highly recommend it as the drivers are well informed of the history and will tell you so many interesting facts.

It’s where the first English settlement was built and is now home to various ancient artifacts, live reenactments, educational classes, and so much more.

Visitors can explore the ruins of James Fort and the Jamestown Church, see significant structures like the Ambler Mansion ruins and Governor Harvey House, and learn about the site’s history and preservation efforts at the Voorhees Archaearium.

The site also offers monuments, including the Tercentenary Monument, General Assembly Monument, and John Smith and Pocahontas statues.

And since it’s just a 15-minute drive from downtown, it’s an excellent addition to 5 days in Williamsburg itinerary !

2. Yorktown, Virginia

Just a 20-minute drive east of Williamsburg, Yorktown makes up the third point of the Historic Triangle of Virginia and is a great place for a day trip for those interested in the American Revolution.

Yorktown was the location of the final battle of the Revolutionary War, which led to the surrender of the British army. 

Today, visitors can explore the  American Revolution Museum at Yorktown , the  Yorktown Victory Monument , and the  Yorktown Battlefield  to learn about the town’s role in the war. 

The town also offers charming colonial-era architecture, including nine pre-Revolutionary buildings, shops, and restaurants in the Riverwalk section along the waterfront. 

This is a great place for those who enjoy learning about history and those looking to gain some knowledge and insight into the American Revolution’s final battle!

3. Newport News, Virginia

Newport News must be on your bucket list for those looking to escape Williamsburg and explore an area known for its outdoor recreational activities and countless parks.

Newport News is only 30 minutes away from Williamsburg and is a great place to visit on a day trip for those looking to stroll around parks, bike rides, or even go camping. 

One of the most popular parks in the area is  Newport News Park , and it’s a great place to spend several hours outdoors enjoying different activities.

4. Richmond, Virginia

Richmond is Virginia’s capital and home to a vibrant art scene, countless museums, and several parks and botanical gardens. The city has great shopping and restaurants throughout. 

For those looking to escape Williamsburg for the day and would like to experience a lively city, head to Richmond. 

When visiting the area, check out the  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens . These gardens are whimsical, to say the least. This is a great place to take in the sights of countless plants, vibrant flowers blossoming, and butterflies roaming throughout. 

Once you have finished up at the gardens, head over to one of the many popular museums in the area. There are countless to choose from, including the  Virginia Museum of Fine Arts , the  Virginia Holocaust Museum , and the  Science Museum of Virginia . This is an excellent way to spend some time in the Richmond area and expand your knowledge on your particular interest!

For those interested in shopping in the area, head to the  Short Pump Town Center  or  Stony Point Fashion Park . Both of these areas have countless stores to stop by and check out!

5. Norfolk, Virginia

As one of the oldest cities in America, Norfolk offers visitors a glimpse into the colonial era and the city’s pivotal role in American history.

The city is home to the largest naval base in the world, as well as numerous museums, galleries, and performing arts venues, including the renowned Chrysler Museum of Art and the Norfolk Botanical Garden.

And it’s unique architecture, from Federal rowhouses to Art Deco buildings, provides a visual feast for architecture enthusiasts.

Visitors can enjoy the city’s parks and recreation areas, catch a game at Harbor Park or explore the city’s waterfront, where you can go boating, fishing, and beach lounging.

The city’s revitalized downtown area is filled with restaurants, bars, and shops, making it the perfect place to spend a day or evening.

6. Virginia Beach, Virginia

Virginia Beach is another great beach area to check out within a short 1 hour and a-10-minute drive of Williamsburg! 

Virginia Beach is an excellent place for a day trip. It has a fabulous boardwalk, great beaches, and delicious eating places. 

We recommend heading to Virginia Beach for a laid-back day relaxing by the ocean! Once you are tired of soaking in the beach sun, head to the  Virginia Beach Boardwalk,  where you can stroll down its 3-mile path. 

When you are ready to grab a bite to eat, stop by  Waterman’s Surfside Grille  for their infamous orange crush drink and scrumptious crab cakes or she-crab soup!

Distance:  1 hour and 10 minutes

7. Charlottesville, Virginia

Charlottesville, Virginia, is just under 2 hours from Williamsburg and is a great place to visit for those looking for beautiful mountain views, incredible wineries and breweries nearby, awesome hikes close by, and the town is full of history. 

One of the best activities to do in the Charlottesville area is to hike and take in the stunning views of the Appalachian Mountains. 

Check out the  Ragged Mountain Natural Area Trail  for a moderate hike less than 7 miles long. This is a great trail for those looking to spend a few hours outside burning calories before heading to breweries or wineries for the day!

Be sure to pack your  favorite energy bars for hiking  to stay healthy and happy while on the trails. 

If hiking isn’t your thing, check out  Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello ! Thomas Jefferson designed and built this charming property and lived there until he passed away. This is a great place to learn more about our 3rd President and marvel at his beautiful home.

Once you have finished your morning activity, head to one of the popular breweries or wineries in the area for delicious drinks and a memorable experience. We recommend checking out  Starr Hill Brewery  or  Gabriele Rausse Winery !

8. Winchester, Virginia

As the county seat of Frederick County, Winchester has played a pivotal role in American history, from its early European exploration and settlement to its involvement in the French and Indian War, Revolutionary War, and Civil War.

Visitors can explore the seven major battlefields in the original Frederick County and nearby areas, as well as other historical sites such as Fort Loudoun, built under the supervision of George Washington, Stonewall Jackson Headquarters Museum, and the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District. 

Winchester also boasts a thriving arts and culture scene, with the annual Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival and National Skirmish competitions.

With its charming downtown area, museums, and historical sites, Winchester offers a unique and educational day trip for visitors to Williamsburg.

Great Day Trips from Williamsburg Outside of Virginia

9. georgetown, d.c..

Another of the best day trips from Williamsburg, VA, is to Georgetown in Washington D.C. This area is extremely popular because it is home to Georgetown University, one of the oldest Catholic colleges in the United States.

Besides its famous college, Georgetown is popular for its awesome shopping, restaurants, and lively nightlife. 

For those looking to get out and explore the area, stop by  Clyde’s of Georgetown  for unforgettable cocktails and delicious American bites.

10. Annapolis, Maryland

Annapolis, Maryland, is another great day trip from Williamsburg. This town is known for its coastal views, home to the United States Naval Academy, its colonial architecture, and terrific seafood. 

For those visiting the area for the first time, head to  The Colonial Annapolis Historic District , where you can take in the charming colonial architecture and learn more about this town’s history and roots. 

Once you have finished learning about colonial America and the city of Annapolis, head to one of the most popular restaurants in the area, the  Boatyard Bar & Grill . This is a great place to grab delicious seafood and sip cold drinks!

11. Raleigh, North Carolina

For those looking to head on a day trip out of state and would like to explore a city in North Carolina, you must check out Raleigh. 

Raleigh is known for its awesome museums, fantastic bars and restaurants, many places to shop, and for being the state capital of North Carolina. 

If you are interested in museums, check out the  North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences  or the  North Carolina Museum of Art . Both of these are great places to spend a few hours learning about various subjects and exploring exhibits that enthrall you. 

For those interested in eating and drinking your way through the city, check out some of Raleigh’s most popular establishments, such as the  Morgan Street Food Hall ,  Beasley’s Chicken, and Honey , or the  Raleigh Beer Garden !

If you would like to stay in the Raleigh area for a bit longer to explore all the city offers, stay at the  Renaissance Raleigh North Hills Hotel  for its incredible aesthetic and amenities.

12. Baltimore, Maryland

One of the furthest day trips from Williamsburg destinations is Baltimore, Maryland. This city has a handful of professional sports teams, delicious food, and many incredible landmarks and attractions. 

For sports lovers, the city of Baltimore is home to the Baltimore Ravens football team and the Orioles baseball team. This is a great place to catch a live game and cheer on Baltimore teams with the locals. 

Stop by the  National Aquarium  or the  Baltimore Museum of Art  if sporting events aren’t your thing. Both of these attractions are very popular amongst visitors and locals alike. They are great places to visit for those looking for a fun and unique experience. 

After you have hit a sporting event or gone to one of Baltimore’s top attractions, head to  G&M Restaurant  for crab cakes that will blow your mind.

We rounded up 10 of the best destinations for you to discover this spring—and offer up insider tips on how to make the most of your day.

Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards

Go if you like … Pretending you’re part of the landed gentry. 

The Details

One of the first things you’ll notice about this boutique vineyard found along the Monticello Wine Trail in North Garden, Virginia is the imposing mountains that command your attention. After they’ve been paid their due respect, you’re most likely to notice the abundance of gorgeous flowers, herbs and kitchen-ready fruits and vegetables surrounding the gorgeous house that looks like Martha Stewart’s vision of a farm. If weather permits, ask for a seat on the veranda terrace overlooking the vines and valley, work your way through tastes of the excellent wine and order from the seasonal small plates—which might include fried oysters and a smoked fish board—to pair with those wines. (Just be sure to book a car service if you plan to do anything more than sip.) After enjoying all the food and drink you can handle, take a walk around the grounds to see if you can spot any familiar plantings, appreciate the heirloom apple orchards and check out the chicken coop.

New This Year

For a quick bite on your way out of town, stop in at Modern Nosh, a new Jewish deli that not only makes your tummy feel good with its housemade brisket and corned beef, but also donates all profits to local charities. The four-diamond Boar’s Head Resort also underwent a major refresh in the past year and will reveal its fully renovated Old Mill Room restaurant, bar, main entrance and lobby this spring.

• Before or after your visit to Pippin Hill, plan to spend some quality time at Monticello, which greatly expanded its exhibits on slavery and Sally Hemings last year.
• Exploring the open-air, pedestrian Downtown Mall is another great way to get to know this college town. You’ll find great shopping, galleries, the Virginia Discovery Museum for children ages 1–8, restaurants and live music.
• To get the full Pippin Hill experience, make time for a meal and a cocktail at its sister restaurant, Red Pump Kitchen.

If You Spend the Night

The Clifton might have originally been built in 1799 for Thomas Jefferson’s daughter and her husband, but the delightfully ancient property reopened last summer following a major facelift that modernized the rooms and shared spaces in the most lovely, luxurious way. The restaurant—now dubbed 1799 and helmed by a Michelin-starred chef—also received an overhaul.

Go if you like … A Gilmore Girls level of small-town quirkiness, history, art and shopping.

Frederick, Maryland is really a place that has it all—an adorable historic downtown chock-full of fun shops, corner buskers and museums, all surrounded by picturesque countryside dotted with breweries, distilleries and wineries. Aside from choosing among the oddball things to check out, like the National Museum of Civil War Medicine or the wildlife preserve and zoo, the most difficult task is figuring out where to eat. Try Pistarro’s for family-friendly pizza, Glory Doughnuts for vegan treats, Firestone’s for upscale comfort classics or local celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio’s Family Meal.

TreeTrekkers aerial challenge park is set to open this spring, as is the farmer-owned fast and casual Hometown Harvest Kitchen.

• Explore the three great shopping areas in town—Carroll Creek Park, a shallow channel lined with shops, water features, bridges, an amphitheater and public art; Everedy Square and Shab Row, an area filled with locally owned shops selling things like handcrafted pottery and folk art; and the stretch of North Market Street that acts as the town’s Main Street, lined with shops like Zoe’s Chocolate Co., Muse, which offers colorful handmade housewares, and Dancing Bear toy store.
• Beer, wine and spirits enthusiasts will want to chart a path around the many breweries, vineyards and distilleries in the area.
• Art buffs will delight in the Downtown Frederick Public Art Trail, a self-guided 2-mile excursion that shows off the town’s diverse outdoor artworks, such as murals, sculptures and an iron bridge.

Book a room at bed and breakfast 10 Clarke Place and walk to dinner at the celebrated Volt or take in a show at the Weinberg Center for the Arts, which might be offering a showing of It’s A Wonderful Life, a silent film accompanied by a live organ, a concert by a Beatles cover band or a talk by a big name like David Sedaris. The newish Inn at Springfield Manor Bed about 15 minutes outside of town also features a winery, brewery, distillery and lavender farm.

Go if you like … Pretending you’ve stepped back in time while shopping at chic, modern boutiques.

There’s a reason Architectural Digest recently named Culpeper as the prettiest town in Virginia, and it becomes obvious as soon as you turn onto the city’s main drag—East Davis Street. The colorful buildings lining this 200-year-old historic shopping district harken back to a time of huge windows, striped awnings and locals chatting at tables set up in front of cafes. The food scene ranges from old-timey diners and snack shops to globally inspired white-tablecloth spots serving seared foie gras. Set in the Piedmont River Valley, the town also offers plenty of opportunities to explore the Civil War battlegrounds to the east and the rolling hills of horse country to the west. Wineries and cycling routes provide further excuses to get in the car and explore the countryside.

B&Bs aren’t for everyone. For those who prefer a brand-new sleep situation, a Hampton Inn  & Suites opened last month.

• We mentioned the shopping, right? Stores along East Davis Street that would pique the interest of even the most discerning of shoppers include Harriet’s General, featuring American-made goods, the eco-friendly and socially responsible Green Roost, plus Homeconomics and Latchkey Mercantile for furniture and home accents.
• Billed as a triple threat, Old House Vineyards can be found roughly five minutes outside of downtown, where the Kearney family turned an 1800s farmhouse with views of Shenandoah National Park into a Shangri-La of wine, craft beer and spirits. Further solidifying the town’s love of all things liquid, 2019 marks the seventh year of the Gnarly Hops & Barley Fest (April 27) featuring more than 50 beer varieties, local food, craft vendors, live music and games.
• And for those sultry Virginia days, seek out Lake Pelham Adventures located in The Ole Country Store & Bakery for canoe, kayak, paddle board and paddle boat rentals starting in April.

On the flip side, getting away from it all in the countryside at Walden Hall might be your cup of tea. Sitting on 10 acres, the B&B offers a farm-to-table breakfast, a retro arcade with 1980s games, a 2-acre fishing pond with complimentary rods and lures, a helipad and high-speed Wi-Fi if you can only unplug and unwind for so long. Thursday through Saturday evenings generally bring free movie nights at the Packard Campus Theater, an AV conservation center with a massive collection of film, television and video items. Showings might include Charlie Chaplin comedy shorts, the more modern Akeelah and the Bee or a 1940s murder mystery starring Claude Rains shown in an art deco-style theater. Saturday mornings bring a popular and well-stocked farmers market from 7:30 a.m.-noon, May through November.

Chesapeake Beach

Go if you like … Low-key family fun for kids who aren’t quite ready for body surfing, fresh seafood or the flash of a slot machine.

This unpretentious Maryland town—so closely tethered to adjacent North Beach that they are often referred to as the Twin Beaches—served as an entertainment playground for Washingtonians in the early 1900s. Back then, a train conveyed city folks looking to exchange downtown heat for bay breezes, a boardwalk, gaming and a ride on the Great Derby Roller Coaster that careened over the bay. The surf here is gentle enough for littles, and all ages will appreciate the abundance of shark-tooth fossils that wash up from the Miocene era, when various shark species swam in the warm, shallow sea that used to flood the area.

Chesapeake Beach Resort & Spa is a hub of the town’s activity, and the hotel plans to roll out new restaurants, a parking garage and commercial areas throughout 2019, with a grand reopening scheduled for 2020. This year also happens to be the town’s 125th anniversary of incorporation, so check the town’s website for special events. In addition, the water park and railway museum are both receiving upgrades this year.

The beach is obviously a huge draw, even when it’s too chilly to appreciate the family-friendly amenities like rentable chairs, umbrellas and inner-tubes. In fact, hitting Bay Front Park (aka Brownie’s Beach) or Breezy Point Beach the morning after a storm is the best time to spot those coveted shark’s teeth. Still, in spring you’ll likely find yourself plotting a time to come back and enjoy the gentle surf during warmer months.  Fishing and crabbing should be next on your list, with plenty of charter boats waiting to help you snag your own catch of the day. Nature nuts will want to plan a stroll along the peaceful, scenic Chesapeake Beach Railway Trail, a boardwalk that meanders over marshland dotted with osprey nests, bald eagles and oyster spats.  If you have time, we’d like to add a quick-yet-quaint visit to the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum to your itinerary. The former depot is located right in the parking lot of the Chesapeake Beach Resort & Spa, and you can learn about the folks who partied here during the town’s heyday.

Chesapeake Beach Resort & Spa completed a full renovation of its rooms, which now feature chic teal and bold flower accents. This is the best option for accommodations in the area, with the added bonus of putting guests right in the middle of everything fun. If you can work in a Friday-night stay, don’t miss the evening farmers market that winds through several blocks of North Beach and includes a classic car show, local produce, baked goods and brews, along with a few food trucks. (Try the ultra-popular Filipino grill that turns out wonderful lumpia.) Lunch at Abner’s for Maryland crab right on the water is a must.

Go if you like … Cities—but have done DC to death.

The nickname of Charm City is truly more than some slick marketing campaign. Baltimoreans are still liable to call you “hon;” they embrace the magic of eccentricity, as evidenced by the city’s love of local artist and director John Waters; and will put Old Bay on darn near everything (not that there’s anything wrong with that). The food and drinks scene here is as vibrant and exciting as anything you’d find in other cities of its size—perhaps more so thanks to its affordability, which fosters a creative class that definitely inspires what ends up on the plates in Baltimore restaurants. Gastronomes will also appreciate the abundant local seafood, which includes oysters, fish and some of the finest crab in the world, and of course, the popular Little Italy neighborhood, where pasta lovers can also indulge in subs at Isabella’s Pizza and cannoli at Vaccaro’s Italian Pastry Shop. There’s plenty of history, from the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine to the cobblestone streets of Fell’s Point (learn more about the neighborhood through a fun ghost tour) to the “other” Washington Monument.

Let’s go ahead and assume you’ve been to the National Aquarium. (If you haven’t, go there first!) Aside from the aquarium, the American Visionary Art Museum is a special place that exhibits original works by self-taught artists. Compelling exhibits this year include the well-received Parenting: An Art without a Manual, which closes Sept. 1, as well as a collection of intricate needlework and fabric collages depicting the survival of the artist and her sister during the Nazi invasion of Poland, which will be on view for five years.  After such heavy topics, you might need a pick-me-up. Guinness Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House—one of only two experimental Guinness breweries in the world, and the only purpose-built Guinness brewery in America—recently joined the lineup of craft brewers in the Baltimore area. The Guinness Draught is brewed in Dublin, but here you’ll find original brews like a Black IPA or a Hibiscus Wheat along with live music, bar snacks, brewery tours and a patio. An Uber ride from downtown Baltimore will run you about $20 roundtrip, but it’s worth it.   Lastly, Charm City Helicopters offers the chance to cross “take helicopter ride” off your bucket list for around $150 per person. It’s an awesome way to view the city while upping your annual quota of adrenaline in 20 minutes.

If the Charm City Bluegrass Festival (April 26–27), Flower Mart (May 3–4), Kinetic Sculpture Race (May 4) or Preakness (May 16-18) inspire you to get a room, book at the ultra-cool Sagamore Pendry or Hotel Revival, two new boutique hotels with jaw-dropping design and excellent service.

Rehoboth Beach

Go if you like … A picture-postcard boardwalk scene by day, and a beer-fueled bar crawl by night.

Most people consider Rehoboth a weeklong endeavor, but there’s no need to sign up for the Saturday-to-Saturday schlep along with hordes of other drivers making the trip from the DMV. Since the Delaware beach sits only 2.5 hours away, it’s completely doable as a day trip—just leave the house around 8 a.m., and you could have your toes in the surf well before lunchtime. The rides at Funland, an amusement park on the boardwalk, don’t start to run until 1 p.m., but the games open at 10 a.m. Our usual itinerary is to park the car as close to the boardwalk as possible, buy a tub of Thrasher’s fries, play a few rounds of Whac-a-Mole and Skee-Ball at Funland and hit the beach for a few hours, with one parent eventually making a Grotto Pizza run at lunchtime. After you’re all sunned, sanded and surfed out, shower off and wander along the boardwalk for frozen custard at Kohr Bros. and maybe a round of mini golf at the rooftop course. Then it’s hours of fun on the rides at Funland, dinner at one of the nicer restaurants in town, and then the whole family piles back into the car with pink cheeks, sandy shoes, big smiles and fervent hopes that the children sleep all the way home.

The Pines recently opened its doors, offering a new fine dining experience to Rehoboth travelers. If rosemary-smoked grilled oysters and ginseng honey-brined pork chops sound good to you, this could be your new go-to spot at the beach. Delmarva Discovery Tours has also launched a new option that allows folks to experience life on the farm, including a ride on a combine during harvest season.

Funland, filled with adorably (and Instagrammable) retro rides and games, should be at the top of your list. Well, maybe right under hitting the beach for swimming, skimboarding or chilling in the sand.  Cruising the boardwalk for epic people-watching and getting suckered into buying a hermit crab seems to be the thing for families to do.  Singles and couples without kids might want to check out the vibrant bar scene including Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats or take advantage of Delaware’s tax-free shopping.

There are perfectly fine hotels farther away from the water, but you’re here to be in the action, right? Newish boutique Hotel Rehoboth sits only about four blocks from the beach, other spots close to the water include Boardwalk Plaza, Avenue Inn & Spa and The Bellmoor Inn & Spa. While some include breakfast, those in the know head over to The Royal Treat for no-fuss, yet incredibly satisfying plates of eggs, pancakes and creamed chipped beef.

Luray Caverns

Go if you like … A little bit of kitsch and a lot of nature, served alongside jaw-dropping geological wonders. 

For most Virginians, searching for the fried egg formation and listening to the Stalacpipe Organ in these underground caverns of stalagmites and stalactites are a rite of passage. Designated a U.S. Natural Landmark by the Department of the Interior, it really is a marvelous sight to experience cathedral-sized rooms with ceilings 10 stories high, filled with dripping columns frozen eons ago, reflected in shimmering pools. Located about 10 minutes off Skyline Drive—another must-do for every Virginian—each ticket to the otherworldly caverns includes entrance to the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, which features transportation exhibits with items dating back to the 1760s, as well as entrance to the Luray Valley Museum documenting local history. Tickets also include a peek at Toy Town Junction, a train collection that began with one boy in 1941. Each of these extras is located on the same property as the caverns.

Luray debuted an arts festival last year, and 2019 will see that festival expand into all of Page County (April 12-15). And for those 100-plus-degree days, Luray recently opened its first escape room, dubbed Escape 211, which features rooms inspired by local attractions (Luray Caverns and Skyline Drive, perhaps?), Luray Caverns also expects to debut a new stair-free entrance by late spring, intended to greatly improve accessibility.

Aside from exploring the caverns and museums, you’ll want to head into the town of Luray for nostalgic charm that could include a peaceful walk along the Hawksbill Greenway Trail, a visit to the Warehouse Art Gallery and a craft brew at Hawksbill Brewing Company.  Proximity to Shenandoah National Park also begs for exploration of the hiking trails, scenic drives and an opportunity to take in the stars from the 4,000-foot elevations of Skyline Drive.  And if the aforementioned kitsch is your thing, pull into Cooter’s Place, an ode to all things Dukes of Hazzard curated by Cooter himself—actor Ben Jones. There’s a museum, a replica of the garage with the General Lee, plenty of merch for fans of the late ’70s/early ’80s TV show and weekly live music performances from Jones.

Located in downtown Luray, The Mimslyn Inn is a member of Historic Hotels of America and embodies the classic charm of its 1931 opening date.

St. Michaels

Go if you like … To look at the water, get out on the water, eat things that come from the water, visit museums about water … 

Often lumped together with Talbot County’s two other beloved towns—Easton and Oxford—St. Michaels nevertheless asserts its own unique personality. Perched on the edge of the Miles River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, this picturesque town of about 1,000 residents loves its maritime history, and if ever there was a place to embrace your inner sea captain, it would be here. Shops that line Talbot Street keep visitors and locals happily pulling out their credit cards for sea-themed gifts, jewelry and home goods with a hefty coastal accent.

The wildly popular Sea Glass Festival has outgrown its original location and will move to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Meanwhile, the Inn at Perry Cabin has opened tennis courts and an 18-hole championship golf course.

Visit the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, which pays homage to the area’s history and culture through exhibits, with a climbable historic lighthouse and a working boathouse that offers hands-on restoration opportunities for visitors.  In addition to learning about it, locals firmly believe that a visit to St. Michaels isn’t complete without getting on the water in some sort of vessel, be it a kayak, paddleboard, sailboat or sunset cruise on a yacht. If the maritime museum has floated your boat with its history lesson, you can also book passage on a 1930s steam ferry or a 1950s skipjack.  There are two springtime festivals you should mark on your calendar as well: WineFest at St. Michaels (April 27–28) and the Sea Glass Festival (April 6-7).

The Inn at Perry Cabin is reason enough to plan an overnight in this adorable town, and the luxury property recently refreshed its rooms—some of which offer water views. The idyllic grounds feature Adirondack chairs overlooking the water, gardens and complimentary bikes for riding into town, and the staff can arrange for you to arrive by boat or will cook your catch of the day if you go fishing or crabbing. If you’re not driving home, that gives you the perfect excuse to check out Eastern Shore Brewing Company, St. Michaels Winery and Lyon Distilling Co.

New York City

Go if you like … Frenetic energy and the thrill of having the world at your fingertips.

We don’t really need to introduce you to New York City, do we? Even if you grew up in South Dakota, you’ve seen movies and lived in the world, right? More likely than not, you’ve done NYC with the spouse and then later with kids in tow, so now it’s time for a girls getaway with your closest friends. Even if you haven’t got the partner or the family, it’s still a great time to plan a Broadway day trip. New York is never the same city twice. It’s constantly changing and always luring us back with new reasons to adore the Big Apple.

This season’s Broadway debuts include Ink, which chronicles a “young Rupert Murdoch on the verge of founding the U.K.’s most influential newspaper,” according to Playbill, and Tootsie, a musical based on the classic 1982 movie. This spring, several new restaurants by superstar chefs like Thomas Keller, José Andrés and David Chang are set to open in Hudson Yards, a huge mixed-use development with shops, residences and a handful of eateries.

It’s impossible to distill New York into just a few must-dos, but if we take it from the angle of a girls trip to blow off some steam, a good place to start is scoring tickets to whatever musical you’ve been dying to see—anything from Aladdin to Wicked.  If the weather’s nice, plan a walk along the High Line, an elevated public park built along a historic freight rail line that combines art, design and nature. Reward yourself after the nearly 2-mile trek with caviar and Champagne at Bagatelle New York.  If the weather’s not so great, take a vote on which amazing art museum the group should take in, or duck into Chelsea Market for outstanding nibbles, drinks, gifts and vintage finds.

The Crowne Plaza HY36 is about a 15-minute walk (less than 10 minutes by car) to the Marquis Theater, where Tootsie is playing. It’s also within walking distance of the High Line and adjacent to Hudson Yards.

Kings Dominion

Go if you like … Speed, heights and face-melting roller coaster drops.

This beloved amusement park has been thrilling Virginians since 1975. It now encompasses 400 acres loaded with more than 60 rides, shows and attractions, including a large Peanuts-inspired little-kid zone called Planet Snoopy and a 20-acre water park perfect for counteracting those swampy, humid summer days. For roller coaster enthusiasts, there’s not much that can top the park’s newest ride, a steel-wood hybrid called Twisted Timbers that debuted last season. Other favorites include the foot-dangling, corkscrew-filled Dominator, which tops out at 67 miles per hour, or the impossibly tall Intimidator 305. Guests who aren’t as into the speed thing can have a decidedly different day at Kings Dominion by taking part in the shopping, watching one of the live shows or riding the elevator to the top of the Eiffel Tower, a third the size of the original, but still affording great views.

Kings Dominion wasn’t ready to reveal any details about this year’s new experience or ride by the time we went to print, but fingers crossed for something epic.

Even if there’s a line, you must try the newest roller coaster, Twisted Timbers, if you’re a coaster fan. It’s awesome.   If you’ve been eyeballing that Xtreme Skyflyer contraption but didn’t want to shell out the extra $20 or so to experience it—do it. It’s like skydiving from 17 stories up without having to jump out of a plane.  Park admission includes access to Soak City, a 20-acre water park filled with two wave pools, more than 20 slides and splash pads for little ones. This section of the park opens for the season May 25.

To really get your money’s worth out of the park, stay until closing time and book a cabin at Camp Wilderness, located less than a mile from the park and featuring a shuttle to and from the park—which is great because your feet will ache. Season passes are another great way to get the most bang for your buck, and serve as further incentive to spend the night.

5. Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge

The vast refuge encompasses 113,000 acres and is located in both Virginia and North Carolina. It marks the site of what was once a swamp that covered over a million acres!

Richmond National Battlefield is one of the main sites to visit. This park commemorates 13 different sites across Richmond from the Civil War. 

Another can’t-miss historical site is St. John’s Church where Patrick Henry gave his “Give me Liberty or Give me Death” speech. 

Other historical sites include the White House of the Confederacy, the Virginia State Capitol Building, the Virginia Executive Mansion , the Maddie L. Walker National Historic Site, and the John Marshall House.

If you’re a history buff, one of the best day trips from Virginia Beach that you shouldn’t skip is historic Fredericksburg.

Located about 158 miles from Virginia Beach, Fredericksburg is typically about a 2.5-hour drive up I-64W and I-95N. Because of its central location, this is also one of the best day trips from Washington DC for those visiting the nation’s capital. 

Once you’re there, park the car and enjoy walking around Downtown Fredericksburg . This 40-block area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its hundreds of 18th- and 19th-Century buildings.

You can stroll the downtown streets to enjoy shopping in antique or boutique shops, get a bite to eat at a variety of locally-owned restaurants, check out various art galleries, or just take in the atmosphere.

For Civil War history enthusiasts, walk up to Marye’s Heights where you’ll find what remains of the Fredericksburg Battlefield . While much of the terrain has been built over, the Sunken Road and Marye’s Heights are two iconic locations that help tell the tale of one of the worst Union defeats during the war.

Be sure to stop by the statue of the Angel of Marye’s Heights to pay tribute to a man who helped a great many wounded and dying soldiers that day.

Beyond the battlefield, you can continue your walking tour of the city by heading over to the pretty campus of the University of Mary Washington to admire its many Jeffersonian-style buildings of red brick with white columns. 

While on campus, you should also seek out the bust of James Farmer , a former professor at UMW and one of the Big Six Civil Rights leaders alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

After all this walking, you have to stop at Carl’s for ice cream before you head back to Virginia Beach — it’s a Fredericksburg institution!

11. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Shenandoah National Park is one of the best day trips from Virginia Beach that offers stunning natural scenery, many hiking opportunities, the chance for wildlife sightings, waterfall viewing, and a relaxing escape. 

Shenandoah National Park extends across 197,411 acres in the state of Virginia through the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The trip from Virginia Beach to Shenandoah’s Rockfish Gap entrance is just over a three-hour drive and just under 200 miles, making it easily reachable for a day trip. 

While you could spend days exploring the park, easy access to the park’s main features and stunning views makes it a fantastic option for a day trip.

Once you reach Shenandoah, there are tons of options for outdoor adventure and scenic drives. A drive along Skyline Drive is one of the best things to do in Shenandoah. 

The 105-mile Skyline Drive through the park takes a minimum of three hours to complete, so if planning a day visit you will need to add an additional three hours on your way back to Virginia Beach. 

A better option may be to drive from the Rockfish Gap Station to the Thornton Gap Station, which has a driving time of an hour and a half.

There are tons of overlooks that you can stop at with stunning views, so even if you are not a hiker you can still enjoy the stunning natural beauty of the area.

If you are a hiker, you will find many hikes for any skill level. The Frazier Discovery Trail and Blackrock Summit Trails are easy hikes that can be done on a day trip. 

From the Thornton Gap entrance, you can also take the short drive outside of Shenandoah National Park to Luray Caverns to enjoy a self-guided tour through columns of stalactites and stalagmites. 

So, whether you are an avid hiker or not, Shenandoah National Park will not disappoint!

12. Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

Tucked 4 hours away from Virginia Beach sits a gem of many sorts: Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. But it’s only KIND of in West Virginia!

The Point at Harper’s Ferry is known as a triangle to view three states: Virginia, West Virginia, AND Maryland! It’s not every day you can hit a unique landmark like that on a day trip.

Aside from the fun facts, Harpers Ferry is surprisingly beautiful. Historical architecture is pleasant to admire on a stroll, or for longer stops at museums such as the John Brown Wax Museum . This is one of the most highly-rated museums in Harpers Ferry.

Surrounding all of this history is the Blue Ridge Mountains . Visitors can enjoy active hikes, especially the famous view from Maryland Heights Overlook . It’s crazy to know you are in such a historical town surrounded by a dramatic mountainous landscape.

Conveniently, the C&O Trail runs through Harpers Ferry to downtown D.C., so if you are looking to extend your day trip longer, this may be a unique option for you!

Parking lots fill quickly in Downtown Harpers Ferry so visitors may benefit from the shuttle service, included with the entrance fee per vehicle. The National Parks pass can alternatively be used (and I recommend it!! Bang for the buck.) Shuttles do not run 24 hours, so check the website in advance when planning your trip. Weekends at Harper’s Ferry draw high crowds.

Harpers Ferry is 252 miles from Virginia Beach and approximately 4 hours by car. Though it’s a little further away, it is one of the best weekend trips from Virginia Beach.

For a change of pace, the Outer Banks is a perfect day trip from Virginia Beach. It’s loaded with history, unique landscapes, and beautiful beaches. Not to mention wild horses! And it’s less than a two-hour drive, making it easy to visit some notable sites before you return to Virginia Beach.

As you drive down Croatan Highway, you’ll notice the giant sand dunes of Jockey’s Ridge State Park . This area is famous for flying kites, so bring one if you can. You can always climb to the top of the dunes to take in the gorgeous views of the bay and ocean.

History lovers will want to visit the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kill Devil Hills. It’s one of the most popular things to do in the Outer Banks . There, you’ll learn about the many trials and tribulations the brothers faced when creating the first airplane and can see where the first flights took place!

The Outer Banks is well known for its wild horses in Corolla . They are descendants of the Spanish Mustangs brought by the explorers over 500 years ago! Although it’s illegal to be within 50 feet of wild horses, several companies offer tours where you can take pictures of the horses while learning more about their history.

There are plenty of public beach access points with parking areas along Virginia Dare Trail if you’re interested in comparing Outer Banks beaches to Virginia Beach. You can even rent kayaks or stand-up paddleboards or go parasailing.

15. Rocky Mount, North Carolina

While you have probably driven by Rocky Mount a dozen times while traveling on Interstate 95 in North Carolina, it is well worth checking out. There are a ton of fun things to do in Rocky Mount from outdoor adventures to foodie fun and more!

Start your day with a little outdoor fun at Battle Park . Explore the paved trails along the Tar River, immerse yourself in nature, and be sure to check out the beautiful waterfall located right beside the parking area off of Falls Road.

Beaufort, NC is a destination worth the short drive from Virginia Beach! Although it’s only 3 hours and 45 minutes south (215 miles), a visit to Beaufort is a charming coastal town that will make you feel like you’ve truly escaped! 

As the third oldest town in North Carolina, Beaufort has a rich history including early settlers, pirates, and time as a fishing town. The town has a well-preserved historic district with quaint streets that are perfect for an afternoon stroll. 

There are many beautifully restored homes and buildings that you can tour with the Beaufort Historic Society. A visit to the NC Maritime Museum is another great option that explores some of the unique shipbuilding and pirate history of the town’s maritime heritage, and best of all, it’s free!

Beaufort also has stunning natural coastal beauty. The town is situated on the waters of Taylors Creek , which feeds directly into the Atlantic Ocean. From downtown, there are breathtaking views of the barrier islands that help to protect the waterfront. 

If you’re lucky, you can even spot wild horses on the neighboring Carrot Island ! Beaufort also has easy access to the nearby beaches of the Crystal Coast, and many state and national wildlife refuges.

15 Best Day Trips from Roanoke, VA

Roanoke, Virginia , is a charming city with beautiful views. It is situated between Smith Mountain Lake and Virginia Tech in Southwest Virginia. Roanoke is also referred to as the “Magic City” or the “Star City of the South”. Roanoke is the cultural hub of Southwest Virginia and has good food, great people, and diverse outdoor adventures. The experiences here are unmatched – you have to come here to see it for yourself because Google Earth can’t show this to you!

Buildings around Roanoke are constructed in the Appalachian building style. A major attraction site here is the overlook that features dramatic views of the Roanoke Valley and provides the perfect spot to photograph Roanoke. If you would like to step out of Roanoke to explore, we have compiled a list of 15 best day trips to make from the city.

1. Blue Ridge Parkway

This 469-mile scenic byway goes through the spine of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. A day trip to these scenic mountains will provide you with the opportunity to enjoy spectacular views.

The most visited part of the Parkway is the National Park System. While traveling along this world-famous road, tourists get to enjoy some amazing experiences such as the Mabry Mill.

The Parkway is America’s longest linear park and connects to the Shenandoah National Park to the north and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to the south. In most places, the Parkway is bordered by United States Forest Service property.

2. Town of Vinton

This town shares a substantial border with the neighboring city of Roanoke. You will find that most of the neighborhoods in the Town of Vinton are bisected by the border between the two territories.

To the south of the town, there is a 1.5-mile long lakefront in the Roanoke River Gorge that is totally worth visiting. This lake was created in 1904 during the construction of the Niagara dam. Visitors come to this side of the lake to experience the steep and wooded cliffs that offer magnificent views of the neighboring city of Roanoke.

Another highlight of your trip to Vinton is the highly-coveted Vinton War Memorial. This landmark sits atop a picturesque 11.5-acre park in the town.

3. Brushy Mountain

These mountain ranges are an isolated spur of the Blue Ridge Mountains and are located in the northwestern end of North Carolina. The most incredible thing about these ranges is that they cross a total of five counties – Yadkin, Iredell, Wilkes, Alexander, and Caldwell.

Brushy mountain ranges are approximately 45 miles long and about 6 miles wide. On your trip to these mountain ranges, ensure that you get to the highest peak, which rises to a height of 2,680 feet. This point is referred to as Pores Knob

There is an abundance of apple orchards in the region. Every year, celebrations are held to celebrate the harvest.

You should also pass by the Brushy Mountain Penitentiary, which was reopened as a historic tourist destination. Tourists get the chance to tour the infamous former maximum security prison and buy some memorabilia at the nearby gift shop.

4. City of Salem

The City of Salem is located in Roanoke County, bordered by the city of Roanoke. Salem was officially founded in 1802.

Salem’s earliest history exists as archeological evidence showing the existence of Native American Tribes, dating from as far as 8000 B.C to the 18th century. There is so much to explore on a day trip in this historically rich town that was initially named “Totero Town.”

Within the City of Salem, you will find a fort which was named after Andrew Lewis – Fort Lewis. The fort was built in 1752. Another must-visit site on your day trip to Salem is the Salem Public Library, which was founded in 1937.

5. Mill Mountain Star and Park

This star is the largest freestanding illuminated man-made star in the world. The colorfully lit 88-foot Mill Mountain Star sits majestically on Mill Mountain. Since its construction in 1949, the star has been lit with neon.

The Mill Mountain Star is the Hollywood sign of the East Coast. It soars up to a height of 1,045 feet and is visible for 60 miles from the air. The best time to see the star is at night, before midnight – this is when the star is usually turned off.

The beautifully landscaped Mill Mountain Park boasts biking and hiking trails. These trails are some of the best in the area. This area has some of the best scenic overlooks and picnic areas.

6. Virginia Museum of Transportation

This historic freight that doubles as a museum houses many Norfolk and Western Locomotives. Some of the collections that are part of the nostalgic show at this museum include electric and diesel locomotives, antique automobiles and trucks, aviation, and vintage steam.

Inside the Virginia Museum of Transportation, you will find the Class A locomotive that is known for its durability and power, and the Class J locomotive that is the only one of its kind still in existence.

You literally need to stand beside the finest rail collections in the US to fully appreciate them; the locomotive wheels alone are as high as the average man.

7. Virginia’s Explore Park

The park is located at Milepost 115 on Blue Ridge Parkway. It features homes and re-enactors from different periods in history.

The mostly-wooded 1,100-acre park provides nature lovers with a great opportunity to enjoy nature’s beauty and wildlife as they stroll through the area. There are over 14 miles of walking and biking trails that are bound to keep you occupied on your day trip from Roanoke.

There are dozens of buildings from the past that reflect the history of southwest Virginia, and a wide range of past cultural experiences to relive. This will allow you to be immersed in the culture to bring the past to life in a way that history books never can.

8. Science Museum of Western Virginia

This museum exhibits themes that include the environment and its health, computer coding, healthy bodies, scientific methods of engineering, healthy earth and how it works, and science through toys.

The museum was chartered in January 1970. Originally, it was housed in the 400 square foot basement of Cherry Hill but was moved six years later, to the abandoned 3,000 square foot Tinker Creek School building.

The Science Museum of Western Virginia features a tropical butterfly garden that has butterflies from all corners of the world. The garden changed from a habitat for exotic butterflies to a garden for pollination.

9. Green Ridge Recreation Center

This recreation center is built with family fun in mind. The 76,000 square foot facility offers great attractions in one convenient location.

There is the indoor center that offers family-friendly facilities such as a swimming pool, a gymnasium, and a fitness area. The outdoor area features an outdoor aquatic area with 34 foot high slides, a spray-ground, and a current river.

Green Ridge Recreation center also has an indoor track with beautiful mountain views. If you are looking for a place to hold your kid’s birthday, this would be an ideal spot.

10. Bottom Creek Gorge

Bottom Creek Gorge has beautiful trails and amazing falls. Among these falls is the second highest waterfall in Virginia

Visit Bottom Creek Gorge to enjoy a quick hike through some old farmsteads with lots of woodland flowers. There is also a wide variety of beautiful plants, wildflowers, and wildlife on this creek that is a hotbed for rare species. There are three trail options – Red, Blue, and Yellow.

Do not miss out on the great photo opportunities provided by the powerful streams of Bottom Creek – a beautiful site to see.

11. Read Mountain Preserve

This preserve contains 243 acres of forested land and aims at preserving a natural environment so that future generations can enjoy it years from now. The day trip to Read Mountain Preserve is appropriate for all ages, so make sure you bring your entire family along – including the dog.

If you are willing to take on a pleasantly challenging yet rewarding day hike, you need to make your way to the top. This strenuous yet enjoyable hike will offer you peaceful panoramic views.

The main feature of this hidden gem is a 1.9-mile moderately rugged trail that takes the average hiker approximately 2.5 hours to get to the top.

12. Rock Castle Gorge Trail

This trail boasts beautiful colors, from the wide array of wildflowers, trees, and other plant life.

Take a stroll through the trail as you enjoy the wonderful views of the gorge. There is a lot to learn about the families that used to live here in the past. They used water from Rock Castle Stream to provide power for their mills.

Rock Castle Gorge boasts over 200 species of wildflowers, 45 species of trees, and 28 species of ferns. All these are sheltered within the deep, narrow confines of the gorge. This botanical haven is almost untouched by man.

13. Peaks of Otter

The Peaks of Otter are well known for their exceptional hiking trails that challenge fitness enthusiasts. The three peaks are perched on top of a dense forest along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The Peaks of Otter are a haven for recreational activities and covers acres of steep topography. There are numerous hiking trails and abundant wildlife, including rare species of birds that can be spotted around the Peaks of Otter.

If you like to fish, you should do so at Abbot Lake; it has catfish, sunfish, and bluegill. This 24-acre lake is the biggest attraction in the Peaks of Otter Park.

14. Buck Mountain Trail

The Buck Mountain trail takes you into a virtually untouched spot in nature. There are numerous rocks to climb and amazing spots to sit and listen to the birds around you. This experience is enough to help visitors savor the wildwood flavor.

The trail is surrounded by trees and these limit the views around. If you would like to get excellent views, you ought to climb to the summit.

The trail is not as long, but it’s totally worth it, as there are plenty of places to sit and read as you reflect.

15. Bedford County

This county was created in 1753 and was named in honor of the English statesman and fourth Duke of Bedford, John Russell. Bedford County became an independent city in the year 1968 and covers an area of 769 square miles. Of these, 753 square miles are land, while the remaining 16 square miles are water.

The area is largely inhabited by indigenous people who are mostly Siouan-speaking tribes. The county is surrounded by the Rockbridge County to the north and Campbell County to the South.

16 East Coast Day Trips and Weekend Getaways

As my kids get older, it becomes more challenging to find long periods of time when we can get away for family vacations. Weekends and school vacations have become filled with sports, school activities, theater, and more. Day trips and quick weekend getaways are sometimes the best way to explore a new area on vacation without the commitment of a full vacation.

Living in the Northeast, we are lucky that there are so many options for fantastic East Coast day trips and weekend getaways. Depending on where on the East Coast you live, some of these can be easy road trips for a quick getaway.

You can always find enough things to do for an entire vacation, however, there are also some activities you may prioritize for a day or weekend trip. Some of the attractions you’ll find at these beautiful places include beaches, National Parks, restaurants, shops, museums, tourist attractions, and more.

East Coast Day Trips and Weekend Getaways

Portland, Maine

The small seaside city of Portland Maine is one of my favorite small cities on the East Coast. This beautiful, charming city includes a historic district along the waterfront.

While you can visit Portland at any time of year, I especially love visiting in the warmer months when you can take advantage of the water for activities like boat cruises . It’s really one of the best weekend getaways in New England .

Portland offers museums, delicious local restaurants, breweries, and shopping. We typically spend about three nights there every time we visit, but you could pick a few things to do on a day or weekend trip.

Acadia National Park

Located on Maine’s Mount Desert Island along the Cadillac Mountains and the beautiful town of Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park is one of the most popular summer destinations in New England. Acadia offers outdoor activities like bicycling, birdwatching, hiking, swimming, boating, and more. It’s the perfect place in the summer months for nature lovers.

Camping is also available at Acadia, but be sure to make those reservations in advance. You’ll also need to purchase an entrance pass to enter the park for any of the activities. If driving up Cadillac Mountain , there’s a separate road vehicle reservation that you’ll need to have before you go.

North Conway, NH

I love visiting the White Mountains in the summer. The crisp mountain air, the gorgeous green mountains, and this beautiful small town combine to create a great summer vacation destination. Of course, if you enjoy skiing, there are also several ski resorts.

Within North Conway, there are several fun things to do, including hiking, swimming, outlet shopping , and more. There’s also Story Land , a theme park for young children, which is located in the nearby town of Glen, NH.

It’s a popular place for young families. You can also enjoy a scenic ride on the Conway Scenic Railroad. If you are planning on staying overnight, there are lots of great hotels in the area .

Newport, RI

Newport is a beautiful, waterfront town located on the tip of Aquidneck Island in Rhode Island. There’s so much to do there, including scenic cruises, beautiful beaches, sailboat rides, the Tennis Hall of Fame, the Newport Mansions , Fort Adams State Park, the Cliff Walk, and more.

Here are some of the tours you can book while you are there .

If you enjoy shopping, visit the waterfront shopping area in Brick Marketplace and along America’s Cup Avenue. Newport has some great hotels within walking distance of many of the attractions. Or, if you are in the area, you can also enjoy a day trip to the area.

One of the best summer getaways on the East Coast is Cape Cod. This region of Massachusetts has lots of small towns offering shops, beaches, museums, restaurants, and so much more.

Whether you are visiting Cape Cod for a day trip or a weekend, it’s best to choose just one or two towns to focus your visit. In the summer, it can be especially difficult to get around the different towns, because traffic can make commute times longer.

I especially recommend visiting the beaches on Cape Cod, including the ones that are part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. They are usually not too overcrowded and are really beautiful. They offer various amenities depending on location.

While you are there, be sure to try some of the fantastic Cape Cod seafood . Here are the family hotels in Cape Cod that I recommend.

Plymouth, MA

As you travel down to Cape Cod, you’ll pass Plymouth, MA, the site of the first Pilgrim settlement. This town is home to several historical sites, including Plymouth Rock, Plimoth Patuxcet Museums , and the replica Mayflower. They can all be visited in one day.

If you plan to visit Cape Cod and love history, you may want to stop in Plymouth on the way to the Cape. It’s an easy stop off Route 3 as you drive to the Cape from Boston and is a pretty short drive.

Martha’s Vineyard/Nantucket

These two islands located off the coast of Cape Cod are extremely popular with seasonal guests. They are beautiful, with gorgeous beaches, fantastic summer restaurants, shops, and more.

Because they are islands, you’ll either need to take a ferry or a flight to get there. Therefore, unless you are staying on Cape Cod, they probably aren’t great day trips.

However, many families enjoy long weekend getaways on both Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. It’s best to choose one of the two because it’s not easy to get between them.

Book your accommodations and ferry well in advance – things book up early for summer vacations. Here are some tours you can book .

The historic city of Boston should definitely be visited at least once by families. I generally recommend spending more than a few days in Massachusett’s capital. However, if you live in the area and can make more than one visit, a weekend getaway could be perfect.

There are many different neighborhoods in Boston, so you can choose your preferred location based on where you plan on spending much of your time. We love the waterfront area, the Back Bay, and the Faneuil Hall area. But there are other great spots for a family vacation as well.

If you are only in Boston for one day , we recommend this itinerary, so you can see many of the historical attractions and learn more about American history. Of course, you could also plan your Boston day trip around a Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park, or take a tour of the park .

Depending on your plans, you may be able to save money on attractions by purchasing a Boston CityPASS .

Rockport, MA/Gloucester

One of our favorite day trips from our home West of Boston is Rockport and Gloucester MA. These two beautiful towns offer great views, shops, restaurants, and much more.

For a day trip, you’ll probably have to choose between a beach day or a shopping/walk-around town day. Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester is one of my favorites, with lots of amenities for families.

If you’d prefer to walk around town, shop at quaint stores, and see art galleries, head to Bearskin Neck in Rockport. Find parking along the street and walk around the pedestrian streets.

Mystic CT was popularized by Julia Robert’s movie Mystic Pizza. However, it also offers some fantastic activities for families.

We love the Mystic Aquarium, which has both indoor and outdoor exhibits. Don’t miss the Beluga Whale exhibit, which is very popular with children.

Adjacent to the aquarium is the Olde Mistick Village, an old-fashioned shopping area with restaurants, boutiques, and more. It’s a fun place to walk around. There’s also Mystic Seaport Village , a recreation of an old seaport village.

Mystic is a convenient location between Boston and NYC. It’s also a stop on the Amtrak Northeast Corridor.

New York City

New York City certainly needs no introduction in this post. I recommend that every family visits at least once. No matter how long your visit is, it’s nearly impossible to see everything in one visit. So, you’ll need to prioritize based on your interests.

Some attractions to consider are the Statue of Liberty , Empire State Building , One World Observatory, Circle Line boat tours, Times Square, the Museum of Natural History, MoMath, the Central Park Zoo, and the Ride NYC. It’s also fun to get tickets for a Broadway show. If you have younger kids, think about going to a matinee.

You may need to make reservations for activities in advance, so it’s good to plan your itinerary before you go. Depending on which attractions you want to visit, a NYC CityPASS could be a great option.

Washington DC

Like NYC, Washington DC is one of those places where you can spend weeks and still not see everything. Many of these attractions in our nation’s capital do have to be planned in advance because you’ll have to request tickets from your United States Congressperson.

The Smithsonian Museums, including the National Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of Natural History, offer free admission (but may require timed entry tickets). There are also many monuments and memorials, as well as the popular International Spy Museum.

While city hotels can be expensive, there are lots of places to stay in the nearby suburbs. See Washington DC hotels here .

Virginia Beach, VA

Virginia Beach isn’t just a famous beach, it’s also the name of a coastal town. It’s located on the coast of Virginia, in the area where the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean meet. While Virginia Beach, with its 3-mile boardwalk, is the most famous of beaches, there are other beaches in the town.

In addition to visiting the beaches, there are other fun activities for families in the area. I especially love the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, a world-class aquarium with lots of exhibits. There’s also an adventure park, with zip lines and ropes courses, located adjacent to the aquarium.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

These North Carolina barrier islands are popular weekend vacation destinations. They offer over 100 miles of beaches (including the Cape Hatteras National Seashore). It’s a quiet destination, with vacation homes and resorts for overnight stays.

There are several towns that comprise the Outer Banks, including Nags Head and the historic city of Kitty Hawk. If you enjoy vacationing on the beach, this is a great option, especially if it’s within driving distance of your own.

Savannah, GA

Savannah is a gorgeous southern city offering beautiful sites, great museums, shops, and wonderful restaurants. A few years ago, I had the opportunity to visit for two days, and I think it would be a great day trip or weekend getaway. The two days weren’t quite enough time – I think you’d probably want to plan for a long weekend if you want to see several different attractions.

To get a good feel of the city, consider taking an Old Town Trolley Tour . It’s a hop-on, hop-off, tour, so it’s a great way to get around and learn about the different attractions. Current or past Girl Scouts will also want to stop by the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace.

If you want to visit the beach, Tybee Island is a great option. It’s located not too far from Savannah on the coast of Georgia.

Clearwater Beach, FL

This gorgeous beach has been named one of the best beaches in the United States. It’s a lively area, with lots of waterfront restaurants and resorts, as well as boat tours of the area. It’s also home to the popular spring Sugar Sand Festival.

While you are in Clearwater, I recommend visiting the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. This famous aquarium focuses on rehabilitation and education and is a great place to learn about various marine animals.

Clearwater is a great day trip for a beach day or weekend getaway from other Florida cities. It’s also a great destination on its own.

Saint Augustine, FL

Saint Augustine, the oldest city in the United States, is a charming city with lots to do. In addition to a fantastic shopping and restaurant downtown area, St. Augustine is also located near several beaches. It’s a great day trip or weekend getaway from Orlando Florida, especially if you’d like to visit the beaches. Here are some tours you can book .

Downtown Mall Downtown Mall free

Charlottesville's popular shops, restaurants and ambiance converge in one main area, known as the historic Downtown Mall. Located, as you would imagine, on Main Street, this thoroughfare is home to more than 120 shops, 30 restaurants (many with outdoor seating), art galleries, multiple performance venues and a Saturday farmers market. Stretching for eight blocks, this pedestrian-only area is popular with both visitors and locals, who say it's the perfect spot to shop, eat or simply people-watch.

In the spring, summer and fall, the mall's Sprint Pavilion hosts musical acts like Modest Mouse, Wiz Khalifa and Alabama Shakes. You can also catch free concerts at the pavilion every Friday from mid-April to mid-September as part of its Fridays After Five concert series. The mall's historical Paramount Theater is a great space to catch fine art performances from ballets to operas to musicals to films.

University of Virginia University of Virginia free

A little trivia for you: Did you know the University of Virginia is the only university in the United States to be designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO? And it's not hard to see why – it's a bastion of U.S. education, and it holds an unofficial reputation for containing the country's most magnificent campus grounds. It's also historically significant, as it was founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819 as the first nonsectarian (or nonreligious) university in the country. Charlottesville visitors don't just tour UVA as prospective students, they also come just to relish in its spectacle.

Recent visitors gushed about the gorgeous grounds and highly recommended taking a tour. Historical tours begin in the Lower East Oval Room of the Rotunda and are offered daily during the academic school year (except on football game days at the university); hourlong tours start at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The university also offers specialty tours which expand on singular aspects of the university's past, such as the history of African Americans. These tours run at various times (guides are all students and therefore the schedule changes to accommodate class schedules). You can request different specialty tours using a form on the school's website .

Monticello Monticello

Monticello is more than just Thomas Jefferson's former living quarters; it's also an architectural masterpiece. First-time visitors are amazed by the majesty of the mansion and the 5,000-acre grounds and frequent guests like to return for in-depth history lessons on the American Revolutionary period, the role of slavery in the prosperity of the United States and more. Over the course of some 40 years, Jefferson incorporated touches of Italian and Parisian architectural styles into the building of his home. He also employed a few custom-made designs to facilitate house operations. Most recommend giving yourself plenty of time to explore all that's in store (a minimum of three hours is recommended). But prepare to pay handsomely – day passes cost $29 for adults online and $33 at the ticket office. Admission for children 12 to 18 is $10 and free for those younger than 12.  

In addition to the guided tour of the first floor of the house (you'll have to pay extra to see the upper floors), day passes also include tours of the gardens and grounds, and a guided outdoor tour detailing the experiences of the 400 enslaved people who lived and worked on the plantation. Visitors interested in a complete picture of life at Monticello will also want to make time for the two-hour Hemings Family Tour, offered daily at 1:35 p.m. The tour aims to tell the story of Sally Hemings, an enslaved woman who bore at least six of Jefferson's children. There is also a digital exhibit within the house, "The Life of Sally Hemings," that relies on the son of Hemings and Jefferson, Madison, to tell his mother's story and provide a broader context about the legacy of race and slavery in the U.S.

According to recent visitors, fall is the best time to visit Carter Mountain Orchard, and it's not just because it's prime apple-picking season. The sweeping views of Charlottesville's autumn colors as seen from the orchard's overlook are not to be missed. In fact, some recent visitors said the views alone are worth the trip to Carter Mountain Orchard.

When you're not ogling the panoramic views, browse the country store for goodies like homemade apple cider doughnuts, apple pies and apple butter. It also sells decorative baskets, ornaments and other home goods.

Shenandoah National Park & Skyline Drive Shenandoah National Park & Skyline Drive

Ask any recent, frequent or past visitor, and they'll tell you the same: Taking the leisurely Skyline Drive through Shenandoah National Park and the Blue Ridge Mountains is nothing short of divine. Stretching for 105 miles north and south along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Skyline Drive is the only public road through the 200,000-acre park. When you're not gazing at the Shenandoah Valley, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife: deer, black bears, wild turkeys and a bevy of other woodland animals are known to cross Skyline Drive, which is why the speed limit is only 35 mph. 

Reviewers gushed about simply rolling down the windows and taking in the breathtaking scenery, but they also recommended pulling off the road to admire the view from one of the drive's 75 overlooks. The scores of fans do offer words of caution, however. For one, you'll have a more relaxing trip if you visit on a weekday. Fill your tank before you enter the park, because gas stations are few and far between. And if you want to hike some of the Shenandoah trails, they suggest you visit in fall when the air is crisp and less muggy. Lastly, there is food in the park, but it's park food in every sense. You'll save your taste buds (and your spare change) if you pack your own goodies.

Highland Highland

Did you know that James Monroe and Thomas Jefferson were neighbors? It's true – and while many travelers delight in learning about Jefferson and his life at  Monticello , few realize that 3 miles south is Highland, the home of our fifth president. The original residence was built in 1793, but was destroyed in a fire in the mid-1800s. Though the structure visitors see today is not the original, it still manages to offer a glimpse into the life of Monroe, his family and the enslaved people that resided on his property and maintained the plantation's crops.

Historians say that Monroe enslaved as many as 250 people in his lifetime, despite supporting abolition. During the property's guided tour, you'll learn about some of the individuals forced to work at Highland. The slave quarters on display today are reproductions of the originals, which remained on the site until the 1920s. Travelers can see the recreated quarters and view demonstrations of chores that were part of the daily lives of enslaved people at Highland. As part of an initiative by William & Mary – Monroe's alma mater and the institution charged with maintaining the property – the biographies of the men, women and children enslaved at Highland will soon be presented, along with oral histories of the descendants.

Jefferson Vineyards Jefferson Vineyards

Jefferson Vineyards is one of Charlottesville's favorite wineries for several reasons. One, its heritage (commissioned by Thomas Jefferson who donated this part of his land to a viticulturist for the purpose of producing wine); two, its size (it boasts 22 acres of vines); and three, its low tasting fee (only $12 to taste eight wines, and you get to take your tasting glass home). Its convenient location, a little more than a mile southeast of Monticello , isn't too shabby either. 

It's for these reasons that travelers highly recommend stopping at the vineyard. When you're not sampling the wine in the tasting room, grab a bottle and park yourself on the outdoor lawn space or indoor seating area for some truly spectacular views. You're also welcome to bring your own picnic. Aside from the quality of the wine, recent travelers were also impressed with the knowledgeable staff, who visitors said provided a wealth of information about the wine and the vineyard's far-reaching history. Reviewers do recommend visiting early, however, as the winery closes its doors early.

Blenheim Vineyards Blenheim Vineyards

Blenheim Vineyards is yet another Charlottesville site where Thomas Jefferson left his mark: TJ and his wife, Martha, regularly sojourned here. In more recent history, Dave Matthews (of the Dave Matthews band) purchased the land in 2000 and later decided to plant vines and thus a popular Charlottesville vineyard was born. Now, travelers make a point to stop at Blenheim Vineyards for its history, its picturesque surroundings and its novelty.

Though Dave Matthews fans are united in their love of Blenheim, they're not the only ones offering praise for this vineyard. Recent travelers highly recommended adding Blenheim to your itinerary. Though reviewers do note that it's smaller than the area's other vineyards, they rave about the views from the tasting room and the outdoor terrace.

Michie Tavern Michie Tavern

Michie Tavern certainly has nostalgia in its favor. Originally erected in the late 1700s in Earlysville, Virginia, this historic landmark was once the hub for that town's passersby, providing food, drink and a cozy bed if necessary. In present day — and relocated about 17 miles south in Charlottesville — the tavern still serves up southern comfort for its guests in its dining room, with a staff donning colonial garb. It also has a separate pub that serves snacks and locally made wine, beer and cider.

Michie is more of a novel historic house than a foodie sensation. In fact, there are several recent visitors who left unimpressed with their meals, particularly given how much it costs. But according to some travelers, the grounds' general store, gift shop and metalsmith shop are worth your notice and make the trip here worthwhile.

The U.S. Department of State runs each passport agency and center. An agency and center is different than acceptance facilities which may include post offices, libraries, and local government offices.

Avoid the stress of needing to visit a passport agency or center for urgent travel. Apply early at an  acceptance facility  or  renew by mail .

Steps to Make an Appointment for Urgent Travel

Follow these steps to make an appointment:

• Go to our  Online Passport Appointment System .
• Enter information about your travel plans to see if you qualify for an appointment. You may make an appointment for up to seven members of your household.
• Enter your email address. We will email you a code which you must enter to continue making an appointment. Check your junk or spam folder if you do not see the code in your inbox.
• Enter your mobile phone number. We will send you a text message with another code you must enter to continue making an appointment.
• Complete the process of scheduling your appointment. 
• Check your email for a message confirming the details of your appointment. The system will hold your appointment for 15 minutes. If you do not confirm your appointment within 15 minutes, you will need to start over.

We sent you a letter : If we need more information to process your application , we will send you a letter in the mail. Send the information to the full mailing address in Sterling, VA listed on your letter. Do not send information to the agency’s physical address.
