Gordon Lightfoot is recovering after a fall at his home last week left him with a fractured wrist, forcing him to postpone some tour dates.

The singer-songwriter known for songs such as  If You Could Read My Mind  has been forced to reschedule a number of upcoming concert dates after undergoing emergency surgery at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto.

Victoria Lord, a representative for Lightfoot, said Monday it's expected he will take eight weeks to recover.

"He's doing just fine," she added.

"He's still rehearsing. They're still working with the band but he obviously can't play right now."

Gordon Lightfoot on crafting his greatest hits

Most of the 82-year-old's postponed shows are in the United States, with some already rescheduled for early 2022.

A single show on Aug. 20 at Casino Rama in Orillia, Ont., has also been affected but not rescheduled yet.

Lightfoot's team is optimistic he will return to the stage early this fall, Lord said, noting that a Sept. 30 concert in Fredericton is still on the calendar.

They also anticipate he'll be back in shape for a three-night run to mark the reopening of Toronto's Massey Hall on Nov. 25 to 27.

Speculation swirled that the 82-year-old Lightfoot might have COVID when fans in Greensburg, Pa., were initially told that Lightfoot was in hospital and would be unable to make the trip south from Toronto for a show in their city on Friday night.

WARMINGTON: Surgery forces Gordon Lightfoot to postpone tour Back to video

But people close to Lightfoot told the Toronto Sun the double-vaccinated icon did not contract the coronavirus but had an accident in his home just as he was preparing to leave to perform eight shows in the United States.

Lightfoot suffered a compound fracture to his right wrist when he fell in his home Thursday evening.

He was rushed to Sunnybrook Hospital where witnesses say Lightfoot’s wife, Kim Hasse, and bass player, Rick Haynes, were helping to care for him.

“It was horrific,” said a family member who confirmed the accident.

With help from neighbours and family, Lightfoot was helped into an ambulance and later underwent surgery.

“The surgery went well and Gordon is back home and doing well,” said the family member.

However, he has had to postpone numerous shows scheduled during the next two months, including an Aug. 20 date at Casino Rama north of his hometown, Orillia.

Lightfoot, who’s known for hits such as Sundown, If You Could Read my Mind, Rainy Day People, Ribbon of Darkness, Carefree Highway and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald , is said to be on the shelf in terms of playing for at least six weeks.

But he plans to get back on the road for other scheduled dates in the United States and Canada, including at the much-anticipated re-opening of Massey Hall Nov. 25-27.

Lightfoot was the only choice to christen the newly-renovated legendary concert venue.

An insider said Lightfoot intends to make those sold-out shows at his beloved Massey Hall and will make up the missed dates in 2022.

Lightfoot’s performances last month in the United States were very well received.

“Gord had three shows that turned out amazing,” texted his wife, Kim, of July’s performances in “Chicago” and in “Davenport, Iowa, and Clear Lake, Iowa, where the Buddy Holly crash was.”

The column I was initially working on was actually about those shows when I heard about this terrible mishap.

I wish Gordon well in his recovery and send my best wishes to the superstar, who has added another chapter to a stellar career that started in the 1960s. He is a national treasure, and his pain is felt by fans across the country and around the world.

But Lightfoot can never be counted out.

He returned to the stage after suffering an abdominal aortic aneurysm in 2002.

On one occasion, he was reported to be dead. He called  AM 640’s Charles Adler to clarify he was still breathing. He also posed for a front-page picture, teasingly checking his pulse.

Lightfoot gets knocked down but seems to always get back up. His dogged perseverance is the stuff of legend.

During the pandemic, Lightfoot and his band have been rehearsing in local studios set up with social distancing protocols.

After getting his second vaccine in the spring, Lightfoot told me, “I always planned on getting it because me and the band want to get back out on the road to see our fans again. Whenever that is, we’ll get back out there and play.”

In July, that happened. Now he’s intent on making yet another comeback.

Gordon Lightfoot cancels 2023 tour dates due to ‘health-related issues’

Gordon Lightfoot

By Michael Ranger

Posted April 11, 2023 9:28 am.

Last Updated April 11, 2023 9:36 am.

Iconic Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot has been forced to cancel his existing tour dates due to health-related issues, a spokesperson for the singer says.

The remaining dates on his 2023 North American tour have been cancelled and his team is “unable to confirm rescheduled dates at this time.”

“We thank you for respecting his privacy as he continues to focus on his recovery,” reads a statement from a spokesperson.

The 84-year-old was scheduled to play in Kitchener in October, his only upcoming Canadian date.

Known for his chart-topping hits “If You Could Read My Mind” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” among others, Lightfoot is widely considered one of the greatest songwriter of all-time.

In November 2021, the singer headlined the first show at Toronto’s newly restored Massey Hall . He had the honour of being the final performance at the venue before the doors were shuttered in July 2018.

John Tory, Toronto’s mayor at the time, pronounced Nov. 25, 2021, as Gordon Lightfoot Day in the city to mark the occasion.

Lightfoot was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 1998 and made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 2003. He has also been the recipient of the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Folk singer Gordon Lightfoot cancels 2023 concert schedule, citing health

TORONTO — Gordon Lightfoot has cancelled all of his upcoming concerts due to health setbacks.

Representatives for the 84-year-old said in a statement the folk singer-songwriter is experiencing "some health-related issues," but didn't give specifics.

They asked for his privacy to be respected as he "continues to focus on his recovery," but said that Lightfoot is unable to confirm rescheduled dates.

The musician was set to play more than a dozen shows in Arizona, California and Florida in April, June and September.

His single Canadian date on the calendar was a rescheduled Kitchener, Ont. concert booked for October.

Lightfoot has been a steady presence on the touring circuit even in recent years as he faced some health complications.

In the summer of 2021, he postponed a series of tour dates after suffering a fall at his home, which led to surgery.

Hardly four months later, he returned with a three-night engagement to reopen the renovated Massey Hall in Toronto.

Within weeks, Lightfoot was back on the road with a run of tour dates that lasted through much of 2022. However, shows that were slated for last December were postponed and those dates are among the concerts that are now cancelled.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 11, 2023.

Official Statement from Family Representative May 2, 2023

Welcome to my Gordon Lightfoot fan site. Although this isn't an official artist's site, I try to accomplish the same thing, and therefore I include all the key elements of such a site. Most of the site is devoted to singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, including a biography, albums, videos, sheet music, lyrics, and information on all the available (and not available) merchandise, as well as the latest news .

The Lightfoot Band

Yes, the band members we know and love are going to tour; Rick Haynes, Barry Keane, Mike Heffernan, and Carter Lancaster will be performing with a "new guy" named Andy Mauck. Make no mistake, Andy is great! They had their first gig January 27th at El Mocambo in Toronto. That gig isold out, so they added a second one the next night. I have The Lightfoot Band Tour Schedule here on this site, and you can also find the link in the top navigation labeled "TLB Tour".

Take a look at this video from January 19th to see a preview of The Lightfoot Band: Watch CP24 Breakfsst Preview .

Click the buttons to play or pause the audio.

And here is a clip from their first show, January 27, 2024 at El Mocambo in Toronto, ON: Watch Clip of First Show (multiple songs) .

And then, there is this video. All I can say is "Wow!"

The Lightfoot Band - Canadian Railroad Trilogy 1/27/2024

Other Artists

My love of Lightfoot's music led me to discover many other wonderful folk musicians, and I include some articles about them, mostly in the Folk Notes column. One of them, Bob Gibson , influenced Lightfoot's 12 string guitar playing and the song structure for one of his most famous songs, Canadian Railroad Trilogy. Another, singer/songwriter Steve Gillette , wrote a song called Darcy Farrow (video), that Lightfoot performed very early in his career. All of these folk musicians write and play music that I enjoy, and that I think you will enjoy too. See the list below for quick links to information about them.

Grant Avenue Studio Kickstarter Campaign

January 27, 2015; updated February 7, 2015 — Grant Avenue Studio, where Lightfoot recorded his most recent albums, has announced a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to do much needed renovations on their 101 year old building.

Bob Doidge, co-founder of Grant Avenue Studio with well known producer Daniel Lanois, has turned to a Kickstarter campaign as an alternative to raising prices. The top gift is sold out; it was unaffordable for most of us, but at least one person on my mailing list was able to do it as their gift of a lifetime to themselves. What is it? A ticket to a special concert by Gordon for TWELVE people. Who wouldn't want to be there? As I always like to say, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen are not Gordon Lightfoot, but I really think you would enjoy them as much as I do. I have found that most Lightfoot fans share the same tastes in music, so I am sharing one of my favorites with you. here , for those of you who might want to see them in person (I will be at the March 22nd show in Pasadena). A webcast is a great way to see a concert you can't get to in person, but there is still nothing like being in the room!

The webcast is Tuesday night, February 25th at 8PM PDT/11PM EDT , so it will be a bit of a challenge for those of you on the East Coast, but at least you don' t have to leave home. "Tickets" are $5 and you can buy them here: bit.ly/SCwebcast2 . The webcast will be viewable on computers, iPhones, and iPads from anywhere in the world.  The show will not be recorded or archived, but you can watch it live in HD.

I can not say enough about how excellent the pair are as a duo, while their individual talents stand on their own. Steve is well known as a songwriter, whose songs have been recorded by artists like John Denver, Garth Brooks, Nanci Griffith, Ian & Sylvia, Waylon Jennings, The Kingston Trio, Anne Murray, Linda Ronstadt, Kenny Rogers, Tammy Wynette, Josh Ritter and others. You will recognize many of the songs when Steve sings them; he is a wonderful guitar player with a unique style, and a superb vocalist as well. Some of his best known songs are Darcy Farrow , Bed of Roses , Glass Houses , (That Song About) The River , and Back on the Street Again . Gordon Lightfoot performed Darcy Farrow on stage in the 1960s, but never recorded it (too bad!). If you click the play button in the image above, you'll see Steve & Cindy perform Bed of Roses , or click the following link to see them perform my favorite, Darcy Farrow . Bed of Roses is another of Steve's wonderful songs, a beautiful love song, recorded by Kenny Rogers.

Cindy is a wonderful vocalist, who performs both her own songs and traditional songs, and accompanies herself on guitar, banjo, concertina, or mountain dulcimer. Her harmonies on Steve's songs are beautiful. Here's a clip of Cindy performing a stirring renditioin of the Child Ballad, The Two Sisters .

Their web site is at compassrosemusic.com ; listen to clips from Cindy's latest CD here (cat lovers take note!), and their latest duo CD, Berrymania, here . Also, listen to clips from their live CD, Live In Concert , which includes their beautiful renditions of many of Steve's most well known songs, including both Darcy Farrow and Bed of Roses .

Steve Gillette - The Man (2010)

Steve Gillette, The Man

Most of the songs are from the 1930s, perfect for Steve's story, which mixes fictional characters with real people, while artfully taking the listener back to those times. Added to the old classics are two new Steve Gillette originals, which fit seamlessly. The CD was inspired by his father's stride piano playing, which is heard on many cuts; the same musical influence that helped inspire the way he, Steve, plays guitar.

The Brothers Four

The Brothers Four - The Beautiful World of the Brothers Four CD

The Brothers Four were pioneers of the "folk revival"; of the few groups from those times still performing today, they remain one of the best known and most popular. Their all-acoustic presentation consists of guitars, banjo, mandolin, upright bass, and of course the trademark rich blend of their four voices. Visit their new online store here: The Brothers Four . I feel privileged to have the opportunity to run their online store for them.

Check out their latest release (pictured above): The Brothers Four - Renewal . Previously, they released a CD in the Spring of 2014: "The Beautiful World of The Brothers Four" , a 19 track disc including two medleys. As a follow-up to their stellar 2010 release, "Golden Anniversary" , which has 20 tracks (and 3 medleys), it is amazing to note that there are only a few songs that appear on both collections, yet all are well loved songs from their huge performing catalogue. Both CDs can be purchased from their online store here: The Brothers Four CDs (Store) . Visit the store for the full track listings, and to listen to clips; there are clips of all the songs on "Golden Anniversary" now; I'll make clips for other CDs as soon as I can.

Their web site is at The Brothers Four .

The Brothers Four

The smooth musical sounds of The Brothers Four have delighted millions for five exciting decades.  The Brothers Four have played thousands of college concerts, serenaded four U.S. presidents at the White House, appeared at countless Community Concerts, performed with symphony orchestras and jazz stars and entertained in dozens of foreign countries.  Internationally acclaimed, they are truly "America's Musical Ambassadors to the World."

Musical million-sellers for The Brothers Four include such releases as "Greenfields," "Yellow Bird," "Try to Remember," and "Across the Wide Missouri."  Their hit recording of "The Green Leaves of Summer" from the motion picture "The Alamo" was nominated for an Academy Award and they performed the song at the awards presentation for the global network telecast.

The full-time lineup of The Brothers Four, as solid as ever, now includes; Mike McCoy , a veteran folk performer & singer/songwriter who has performed with The Brothers Four on special recording projects and occasional stage presentations since the late 1960’s; Karl Olsen , a Washington native, folk performer, choral director, writer and arranger, who is the latest addition to the group, blending his sparkling vocal and guitar skills smoothly into the sound of The Brothers Four; Washington State's Mark Pearson , guitarist, banjo player extraordinaire & singer/songwriter who has been a strong and consistent part of the group's signature sound since he originally joined in the late 1960's; and Founding Member and Seattle native, Bob Flick , bass player, group leader & singer/songwriter.

March 27, 2019 - "Family Recipe" (2018) is Michael Jerling's tenth album, a collection of twelve new original songs. Included are a country ballad, "In Lieu Of Flowers," a poignant look at family with the folky "Family Recipe," a bit of fingerpicking whimsy (and a whole lot of humor) with "That's Why Republicans Hate Trains," and a waltz-time look at European café society between the wars in with "When Words Still Mattered."

Ably assisted by many talented musicians including Peter Ostroushko (mandolin), Tony Markellis (bass) , Teresina Huxtable (reed organ, accordion, vocals), Tom Wieseler (keyboards), Danny Whelchel (drums and percussion), Kevin Maul (pedal steel & dobro), Nick Piccininni (fiddle), Orion Kribs (mandolin), John Kribs (electric guitar) and Don Armstrong, Liz Hood and Carol Christensen (harmonies). Greg Montgomery and Paula Rosenberg handled the album graphics.

This album is available on CD, and digitally as both hi-res MP3s and lossless FLACs. See more at my Michael's Fool's Hill Music online store .

2014 Chad Mitchell Trio Farewell Concert Video DVD

Since 1983 the World Folk Music Association (WFMA) has been dedicated to promoting contemporary and traditional folk music, and spreading the word to fans and folk artists — keeping everyone in the folk community involved and informed.

WFMA pulls together local and national artists for concerts and other special events that would not otherwise be availabe to folk fans, in a way that supports the intimate nature of the folk tradition.

In November, 2014, the World Folk Music Association hosted a special Chad Mitchell Trio Farewell Concert. It was the last land-based concert for the Trio, with a cruise scheduled in 2015. To celebrate the event and the Trio's career, WFMA and the CMT have released a 2 DVD set of the concert, with a full disc of the Trio's performance, as well as the first set of the show with the Gaslight Singers, Side by Side and Tom Paxton. Folk music fans will want to get their hands on this wonderful video!

Now, in February, 2016, WFMA and the CMT have released a 2 CD set, which includes most of the concert in its audio splendor.

You can read about the DVD here , and the CD here . You can order them from the WFMA online store or the Chad Mitchell Trio store , both of which I host.

Bob Gibson Yes I See

March, 2017 -

Yes I See was Bob Gibson's second album for Elektra, released in 1961. In this album, he returns to his traditional roots, following his more pop flavored first album, "Ski Songs." Sadly, both albums — released on CD by Collector's Choice in 2008 — are now out of print, but I was able to snatch up some of these and can offer them to you now. In addition to some popular traditional tunes, Bob teamed up on the songwriting with his performing partner Hamilton Camp (then known as Bob Camp) for three of the songs.

The years have rolled on, and playoff status eluded the Cubs until the Fall of 2016, when the they won the National League Championship Series to advance to the 2016 World Series, and then won the ultimate prize, the World Series itself. The CD was recorded at Grant Avenue Studios, in Hamilton, ON, by Bob Doidge and Amy King. There is a nice mixture of fingerpicking and strumming, and wonderful arrangements by the very talented Mr. Doidge, who also did the arrangements for two of the songs on Lightfoot's 2004 CD (and the recording of the entire album). Bob plays high-string guitar, bass, accordian, drums ... and sleigh bells ...

About Gordon Lightfoot

Gordon Lightfoot has recorded 20 albums and has five Grammy nominations. His songs have been aired regularly for over 50 years, earning him Radio Singles chart positions in North America achieved by few others. Lightfoot’s radio hits in both the US and Canada have earned many #1, Top 10 and Top 40 rankings.

Aside from his success in writing, singing and performing his own songs, Lightfoot has found fortune in having his songs recorded and performed by other great artists, including Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Johnny Mathis, Barbra Streisand and many more.

In June of 2012, Lightfoot was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, honored for his role in defining the folk-pop sound of the 1960s and 1970s. In his native Canada, Lightfoot has been decorated with the highest honors bestowed to a civilian including the Governor’s General Award and the Companion to the Order of Canada honor of merit. Gordon is a member of Canada’s Walk of Fame and The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. Endorsed by prominent artists like Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson and Jimmy Buffett, Gordon Lightfoot is perhaps the most prolific and greatest Canadian singer-songwriter of all time.

POSTPONED: The Gordon Lightfoot Tribute

THIS SHOW HAS BEEN POSTPONED. A RESCHEDULE DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED SOON!

Mike Fornes’ portrayal of Gordon Lightfoot is simply an honest effort to entertain with an accurate representation of a Lightfoot concert. Mike plays the role of “Gord” in first person yet avoids saying “I” or “me” in his storytelling of the songs and the circumstances of how they were written. His tireless research and personal interaction with Lightfoot have lead to accurate mannerisms, speaking patterns, clothing, and of course identical guitars used by the Canadian icon on stage. “If You Could Read My Mind”, ” Sundown”, “The Wreck of Edmud Fitzgerald”, and so many more hits!
