How to set up and use Google Voice, Google's free phone call and texting service, on your mobile and desktop

  • Google Voice is a service that lets you merge multiple phone numbers into a single number.
  • You can make free calls or texts from your Google Voice number within the US and Canada.
  • To get started with Google Voice, you need to have a Google account and an existing phone number.

Insider Today

Google Voice is a free internet telephone service that allows you to combine all your cellular services and forward calls to several devices at a time.

Google Voice was launched in March 2009, after Google acquired the communications startup GrandCentral. Today, some 15 years later, Google Voice is part of Google Workspace, alongside other core services like Gmail, Google Calendar , Google Drive, and Google Meet .

This internet telephone service remains free for almost all calls placed within the United States and Canada, with varying international rates.

While you do have to have at least one existing phone line in order to use Google Voice — and a Google account, of course — there are still many good reasons to use the service.

And that's especially true if you have more than one phone number, such as a cell number, a work number, and a home landline. Google Voice can streamline your calls and texts, helping ensure you never miss an important communication.

Google Voice has a fascinating history — it was at the heart of a major spat between former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and the late Apple founder Steve Jobs .

Google sought to bring Google Voice to the iPhone as an app, but Apple rejected the move amid Google's growing forays into the telecommunications market. The tensions culminated with Schmidt's resignation from Apple's board of directors in 2009. Apple ultimately relented, adding Google Voice to the App Store in 2010.

But controversy around Google Voice continues today: in 2024, a federal jury ordered Google to pay $12 million in damages for infringing on internet voice-calling patents with Google Voice. It's one of several major federal lawsuits Google has faced throughout 2023 and 2024.

Why would someone use a Google Voice number?

Google Voice allows you to combine all your phone services and forward calls to several devices at a time. So, if you have a landline at home, a business phone, and your personal smartphone, rather than bouncing people between three different numbers and devices, you can give out one simple Google Voice number. When someone calls, you'll be notified at all three numbers simultaneously.

You can also use Google Voice on a computer to place and receive calls. But before you can use any of Google Voice's features, you'll need to have a Google account  first. As noted, you'll also need to have an existing US-based mobile or landline phone number, so in that sense, Google Voice is not a free phone service but rather an add-on to your extant services.

For users who simply have too many phones and numbers to manage, Google Voice is a great resource for merging multiple communication channels. It's also good for regular travelers who are forced to bounce between carriers because you can use your Google Voice number internationally. However, it does not work in all countries, and rates vary by location.

If you find yourself changing phone numbers and paying a fortune for international calls, or for those users who are looking to record incoming calls for free , it's also a great option.

What are the disadvantages of Google Voice?

Google Voice works well throughout much of Europe and Latin America, but it's not usable in many other parts of the world, not without upgrading to a Google Voice plan offering access to a Google SIP (Session Initiated Protocol) that enables VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol).

And if you are setting up Google Voice for a small business, it's not free even for domestic calls and calls placed to Canada, though the monthly plans are hardly prohibitively expensive.

People will not know that you are using Google Voice when you call or text them unless they are already aware of your Google Voice number; it will be displayed as a number separate from any phone lines you attach to the account, as Google Voice issues you a new number. This can be a benefit if you want to preserve some anonymity, but it's a drawback if people screen your calls for not recognizing you.

Also, Google Voice cannot be used with a classic landline — not completely, anyway. While it can be set up to forward calls to your landline, you can't call out from a landline phone via your Google Voice number.

All that noted, there are more pros to cons to using Google Voice for many people. So, here's a step-by-step guide to getting you started using Google Voice.

How to set up Google Voice on a computer

1.  Go the  Google Voice website .

2.  Sign into your Google account if you aren't already.

3.  Enter your area code or city in the Google Voice text box.

4.  In the drop-down that appears, select a phone number.

How to use Google Voice

You can treat Google Voice just like your normal phone app but with even more flexibility.

To make a call through Google Voice, simply go to Calls , hit the dialpad icon, and type in the number. In the Settings menu, you can set up and listen to voicemail, block numbers, and customize other preferences.

You can also send and receive text messages through Google Voice using WiFi or cellular data, but there are  certain restrictions . Texts are free if you're sending messages to anyone in the US or Canada, but when you're outside the US and not using WiFi, you might get hit with extra roaming fees.

And on your computer, simply go to the Google Voice page while you are signed into your Google account and use the keypad at the bottom right corner of the screen or use the number keys on your computer to type in the number you want to call, then hit the phone icon near the top right corner of the screen. Google Voice will place a call, and you can use your computer's speaker and microphone to listen and talk.

On February 28, Axel Springer, Business Insider's parent company, joined 31 other media groups and filed a $2.3 billion suit against Google in Dutch court, alleging losses suffered due to the company's advertising practices.

Google Ruined It !! Now It's Back !!

The latest version has some nice improvements but added some other issues. I like the ability to send photos and use emojis. I don’t like that it no longer recalls and suggests the numbers that you have sent texts to. Because I don’t link my iPhone contacts to it, If I delete a text string I now have to look up the number to start a new one. It should suggest numbers that have been used even if the archives are deleted and allow us to delete a suggestion we no longer need. The opposite is true for phone calls. It not only archives the phone numbers of calls you make but there is no way I have found to remove them from the archive. If these two issues were resolved I would rate it 5 stars. I'm updating my previous negative review to a positive 5 stars. Defects have been corrected and it is easier and more reliable to use. I especially like the ability to easily and permanently delete conversation and call history. Thank you Google !! Totally non functional for texts. Used the prior version all the time now there is no way to send a txt because the ">" that used to be there to send is missing. Also, after you enter the destination number you cannot get back to the message without starting over. This is a total train wreck. (Using iPhone 6s with latest iOS update).

Mobile data calling is broken

Google Voice claims you can make and receive VOIP calls using WIFI and mobile data, provided you configure that you prefer this option versus using your mobile phone number. However whenever you are off WIFI and on mobile data, the app says your “Internet Connection is unstable” so it’s going to use your mobile phone number anyway as a fallback. I assure you my LTE service is excellent and I have no trouble with Zoom and Skype and WhatsApp video calls over LTE, so a voice only call on GV should be a piece of cake. By saying your “Internet Connection is unstable” Google is just making up an excuse for their app being broken. It’s actually Google’s app that is unstable. Too bad they killed making and receiving calls in Hangouts because that worked perfectly all the time. UPDATE: Lowering rating to 1 star. Google contacted me to say I should test my Internet bandwidth while on LTE. Obviously the developers didn’t read what I wrote above about other voice and videoconferencing applications working fine. They simply cannot believe they have a bug and they’re going to blame it on something else. What hubris! And by the way I see similar replies to other poor reviews of this App. Google, Ookla Speedtest shows 11 Mbps down and 3 Mbps up under the worst of circumstances. If that isn’t enough for a phone call, I don’t know what is.

Developer Response ,

Hi there. Please check your internet connection by doing a Google search for 'internet speed test' as connection may be poor. You may also use a different network (mobile or WiFi). Could you try uninstalling and then reinstalling the app itself? Follow the steps here: https://goo.gle/2SoitJl. If this doesn't help, please visit our Community Forum for any additional assistance: https://goo.gle/34DGfqR.

Decent, but could use some work

I use Google Voice as a work number so I don’t have to give out my personal one. I love that it’s free and that I’m able to keep my work life and personal life separate. I also love that you can record as many voicemail messages as you want; when I’m out of the office, I just switch it to a different voicemail and I’m good to go. Having said that, there are a couple features I’d like to see/bugs that need fixing. I’d love to see more options for the display when someone is calling through Google Voice. As it stands, you can either have the name “Google Voice Call” scrolling on the screen without knowing who is calling, or you can “screen” the call so you know what number is calling, but you don’t know if it’s a Voice call or a normal call from your personal number until you answer and hear the “call from Google Voice” lady. Can there be a way to see that it’s a Voice call and also see who’s calling? I’d really like that feature. One of my biggest complaints is that do not disturb doesn’t seem to work. When I’m on vacation, I don’t want any work interruption whatsoever. I was visiting a childhood friend in another state and kept getting calls from clients despite do not disturb being on in the app. Texts, calls, voicemails, everything just kept popping up on my phone; it drove me nuts! Please fix this feature!
Hi there. You can screen your calls to hear the name of the caller before you answer the call. To set it up, check this article: https://goo.gle/2I4hueo. Cannot select google voice as the default calling option instead of Facetime. Open facetime>Preferences, scroll down to default for calls and can select: Facetime, Zoom, Microsoft teams, Skype for business but NO GOOGLE VOICE. I NEED click to call to default to google voice and this is where that would be set.

Google Voice makes acquiring and managing personal and professional VOIP service lines simple. It can be an ideal solution for everyone, from your average Joe to freelancers and large-scale companies. If you’re wondering what Google Voice is and how to set it up, don’t worry; we’ll cover it all in this article.

QUICK ANSWER

Google Voice is a voice-calling and text messaging application. It provides you with a phone number, making it simple to separate your lines. The app is free for personal use in the United States. Business plans start at $10 per user per month, and three plans are available.

How to set up Google Voice

Google Voice stock photo 1

Google Voice first became available way back in 2009. It’s one of the many VoIP services that lets users make calls via the internet. Yet, unlike Whatsapp and Telegram , Google Voice provides a separate number from your standard network provider.

One of the main perks of using Google Voice is that you don’t need to purchase a separate mobile device, as all its functionality works through the mobile app. It’s also available to use via a desktop application and through supported web browsers. These include Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, and Apple Safari.

The app is especially useful for organizations that require multiple users to answer calls from the same number, like customer service departments and sales teams. Team members log into a shared Google Voice account and instantly gain access to all the available features.

Currently, Google Voice isn’t widely available and only accessible in 14 countries across North America and parts of Europe. Single users can use it as a standalone app, while those on a business plan must create a Google Workspace account to access the app.

Before highlighting Google Voice’s core features, we should mention that it isn’t built for video calls. If that’s a feature you need, it’s worth checking out our selection of the best video calling apps .

Calls and text

The bread and butter of Google Voice is its calling and texting capabilities. Users can call other Google Voice numbers, standard network numbers, and landlines. Messages work like any other messaging app; beyond text, it’s possible to send photographs and videos – you get unlimited text messages per month across all plans.

Spam calls filtering

Though not unique to Google Voice, one of the stand-out features is the app’s ability to filter out spam calls. Using Google’s AI technology, the app will alert you if it believes an incoming call is spam, like a cold sales pitch. You still have the option to take the call if you wish, and you can block numbers to prevent receiving future calls.

Despite being a VoIP service, setting up a voicemail in the Google Voice app is still possible. It has some cool features too, like listening to a caller leave their voicemail in real-time. Alternatively, you can ask Google Voice to transcribe your voicemails so you can read rather than listen.

Compatibility

For desktop, Google Voice is compatible with ChromeOS , Windows, and macOS. You can download the app on Android and iOS, and it’s available for iPadOS. As for browsers, the app is compatible with Chrome, Safari, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge.

Is Google Voice free

?Google Voice is only free for single users making calls and sending texts to numbers in the United States. Remember that if you intend to make international calls, charges will apply, and the cost depends on which country you are calling. You can learn more about international rates here .

Business users can choose from three paid plans, with Google offering more features for those on a higher paid subscription. Calls to numbers inside the United States are part of the cost of your subscription, but you’ll pay extra fees if you make calls abroad. Learn more about business plans here .

Another benefit of using Google Voice is that it’s relatively easy to use the service. We’ve broken down how to create accounts for personal and business use, as the process differs slightly.

Setting up Google Voice for personal use

  • Visit the Google Voice homepage .
  • Select For personal use .
  • Next, choose which platform you would like to use Google Voice.
  • If you skip this part, you won’t be able to send and receive calls and messages.
  • Add your current telephone number to receive a verification code via phone call or text.
  • Once you have verified your account, you can use Google Voice and its features.

Why choose Google Voice?

Google Voice hardly offers groundbreaking features, which may leave some readers asking: What’s the point?

The app is an excellent addition for those already using Google Workspace, as it integrates with other apps like Google Calendar and Google Meet . Plus, it removes the need for a third-party voice calling solution.

It’s also one of the quietest and easiest ways to get mass business communications up and running. We also shouldn’t underestimate how invaluable it can be to make calls over Wi-Fi, which becomes even more important if you ever find yourself in areas with lackluster mobile coverage.

And even if you don’t care for business use, I find that Google Voice is a great tool to keep my personal and professional lines separate. I usually use my Google Voice number to communicate with businesses, stores, banks, etc. Meanwhile, only close friends and family have my personal phone number.

If Google Voice does not convince you, we recommend checking out the best free calling apps .

All Google Workspace apps can be compliant with HIPAA regulations. Users who are subject to HIPAA must first sign Google’s Business Associate Agreement (BAA).

Yes. Users can receive text messages through the Google Voice mobile app and the desktop web-based versions.

Yes. Google Voice allows you to make international calls. These calls are charged separately to your monthly subscription and the cost of the calls depends on which country you are calling. In terms of roaming outside your country, Google Voice will work anywhere as long as you have a data connection.

Google uses industry-standard encryption to secure your data. This, along with Google’s other security features, should be enough to fend off middleman attacks. Note, however, that Google Voice doesn’t have end-to-end encryption, which means Google employees could potentially access your data.

Voice search icon in Safari is missing on MAC and iPhone

Is the voice search option in Safari no longer available? I noticed recently that I'm no longer seeing the mic icon in the google search window, only the "camera" icon to search for images (see snapshot below). I do know that I have voice control always enabled on my Mac, but have never had an issue with not seeing voice search in Safari until recently. The icon is no longer in Safari on my iPhone either, which suggests to me that it may no longer be available. I've gone through several troubleshooting tips and nothing seems to work. Thanks for any assistance!

Hello GoodeTeam,

Based on the app developers support website, you'll need to be using Google Chrome to have this option. See Use "Hey Google" voice searches & actions - iPhone & iPad for more information.

"Turn on voice search

  • On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google app .
  • At the top right, tap your  Profile picture or initial   > Settings  > Voice and Assistant .
  • From here, you can change settings like your language and whether you want to have a voice search start when you say, "Ok Google.""

If you have feedback or questions for the developer of this feature, you'll want to contact them directly: Google Search Help

Google docs and slides finally bring their new voice tools to edge and safari.

Better browser support benefits more users

  • The Google Docs and Slides voice typing feature is now available on Safari and Edge browsers for all users, not just Chrome.
  • Voice typing allows for hands-free editing and captioning in documents, and drafting speaker notes in presentations.
  • Users can control browser-level access to voice data collected for Docs and Slides, with rollout for all account types by June 14.

As Android enthusiasts, as much as we like to think Google products and services are not a walled garden like Apple tech, there are several services and features available exclusively to Pixel users, paying Workspace customers, and Android users in general. However, one such feature on Google Slides and Docs just shed its Chrome exclusivity to benefit scores of people using these services on Apple’s Safari browser and Microsoft’s Edge pre-installed on Windows machines.

Google Docs tips and tricks: Make the most of the Microsoft Word alternative

Google Docs and Slides have a few features tucked up in the menus, even if you exclude all the new Gemini-powered features added in the past year. I often use voice typing in Docs , available under Tools → Voice typing , or with the quick keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+S (on Windows). The feature also allows editing the document without touching your keyboard, as long as you give the browser tab access to your device mic. Similar controls can be used to add captions to images in your documents.

On Slides, this voice typing can be used to draft and edit speaker notes for your presentation. However, the feature has only been available to Chrome users, and people on a Mac are forced to install the browser if they want it. However, Google has finally expanded support to Edge and Safari.

Desktop users can use voice typing, irrespective of browser preference

In a Workspace Updates blog post explaining what’s changing, Google says the web speech API used controls the feature and users will have browser-level controls for it. This speech-to-text service manages voice data and sends just the text data to Google Docs and Slides for input in your document. If you’re paranoid about voice data collection in the background, just make sure to deny microphone access to tabs where Docs and Slides are open, and your browser should remember the preference.

Workspace administrators can still control which browsers support these features, because only some may offer bowser-level API management controls. That said, Google is not restricting the expansion of these features by account type. The rollout is underway and should reach Workspace, Workspace Individual, and personal account holders by June 14.

Google Workspace brings voice typing to Edge and Safari

Aditya Tiwari Neowin @TheLazyAvenger · May 24, 2024 03:48 EDT with 1 comment

Microphone in front of a monitor

Announcing new features for Workspace users, Google said it's bringing voice typing and captions support to more browsers, such as Edge and Safari, in addition to Google Chrome. The features are rolling out to all Google Workspace users over the coming weeks, including those with personal Google accounts.

You can already use voice typing on Google Docs to edit your documents or edit speaker notes in Google Slides. Meanwhile, you can enable automatic captions to display what the speaker is saying in real time in Google Slides.

"Starting today, we’re expanding support for voice typing and captions features to additional browsers, such as Edge and Safari. When a user turns on voice typing or captions, the web browser controls the speech-to-text service, determines how speech is processed, and then sends text data to Google Docs and Google Slides," Google said in a blog post .

Google Docs voice typing

The feature, accessible via Tools > Voice typing, offers a platter of voice commands you can use to edit and format your documents in Google Docs. For example, you can say, "Go to the end of the line," "Select paragraph," and more. You can use different voice commands to start/stop voice typing, select items, format text, copy-paste content, edit tables, add punctuation, and turn on the screen reader, among various use cases.

Voice typing is available in multiple languages, but you can only issue voice commands when the account language and document language are both English. Before using voice commands, you need to make sure the microphone on your Windows PC or Mac is in working condition.

Google said that support for voice typing and automated captions is only available on desktop versions of the web browsers. Admins managing a workspace can disable voice typing and captions altogether and control which web browsers are supported in their organization.

Apple Shortcuts and ChatGPT for Mac

Avatar for Zac Hall

OpenAI recently launched their official ChatGPT app for the Mac (before Windows). The macOS app brings most of the functionality from the iPhone version to the desktop — no web browser needed.

Option + Space

Hands-down, the best function of the Mac app is instant ChatGPT access from anywhere with a simple keyboard shortcut. Option + Space is the default, or you can assign your own. Before ChatGPT came to the Mac, I kept a Safari tab pinned to OpenAI’s website. Since I spend the majority of my work week on the Mac, my ChatGPT usage has skyrocketed beyond a few times a day to dozens of instances throughout the day.

Anyway, today I realized that the same Shortcuts supported by ChatGPT on iOS also work with ChatGPT on macOS! In my case, they synced over and just worked. You can also set them up from Shortcuts on the Mac. (Create a new shortcut, select ChatGPT from apps, and add which action you’d like to assign.)

ChatGPT offers two shortcuts: Ask ChatGPT , and Start voice conversation with ChatGPT .

Using the iPhone, I’ve used Ask ChatGPT as a lock screen launcher and occasionally assigned Start voice conversation with ChatGPT to the Action button on my iPhone 15 Pro Max. (I primarily use the Action button to launch Camera. It can get awkward when I forget I changed it, go to take a photo, and ChatGPT opens a voice conversation…)

ChatGPT voice

The system-wide keyboard shortcut fulfills my need for Ask ChatGPT . I’m sure more savvy Shortcuts users could cook up some useful versions of it. It’s the Start voice conversation with ChatGPT action that I think has potential on the Mac. See below:

The only tweak I needed for the Mac is to include it in the menu bar folder and assign Control + Space as the keyboard shortcut to run the action. You can also add an icon to the Dock for initiating a voice conversation. The shortcut even works when the ChatGPT Mac app is closed.

Assistant to the voice assistant

People have already been using ChatGPT voice on iOS to create a generative AI version of Siri. Having this same capability on the Mac enhances voice assistant features on the desktop too. I’ll have to spend more time with it before I determine whether or not actually using ChatGPT voice on the Mac is a good fit, but I think it has potential.

Of course, Siri itself will hopefully learn a thing or two with OpenAI’s help in iOS 18 and macOS 15. We’ll find out for sure on June 10 when Apple unveils its upcoming software improvements.

Oh, and lastly, there’s another way to use ChatGPT and Shortcuts. It turns out ChatGPT is pretty good at giving you step-by-step instructions for how to make a shortcut based on what you’re trying to do. Now imagine a world where Siri and the Shortcuts app itself uses generative AI to integrate that sort of feature directly and with more system access.

Note that OpenAI is still in the process of rolling out its Mac app to all users.

Google messages noise cancellation sees wider rollout.

Avatar for Abner Li

Earlier this month, Google Messages more widely rolled out a redesign of the voice recorder , but not all users got the new noise cancellation feature. That’s now seeing broader availability.

  • Related : Google Messages rolling out 15-minute RCS editing

After launching the new pane UI and tapping record, a “Noise cancellation ON/OFF” pill appears at the bottom of the waveform window.

While there’s the option to disable for the current recording, we’ve noticed that noise cancellation automatically turns back on for your next session. It’s also enabled by default when you’re using the long-press shortcut/activation method.

Earlier this month, not all Google Messages users — across Pixel and Samsung — that received the voice redesign got the new noise cancellation capability. In recent days, more people are seeing it, especially after today’s beta (version 20240523_04_RC00).

It’s appearing on all the phones we checked this afternoon. This is also the case on the stable channel.

Google Messages noise cancellation

With this update, Google said it “improved the overall audio quality of voice messages by increasing the bitrate and sampling rate.”

Checking in on other features, not all users are seeing Voice Moods just yet.
