Top 12 Day Trips from Whistler – An Update

To get the most out of your family in Whistler, you’ve really got to get out of the Village proper. There are limitless day trips that will take you outside of the Village and into the landscape beyond. While Whistler has plenty to offer families of all ages, there is so much more to see in the surrounding communities.

The beautiful thing is, your hotel concierge will be happy to help you curate the vacation of your dreams, one day trip at a time. This makes it easy! If you’ve come to relax and get outside with your family, the area around Whistler makes the perfect destination. Day trips from Whistler are abundant thanks to the fantastic terrain which envelopes it.

Adventures start from the steps of your hotel, and they will take you outside of the resort municipality for the day.

We strongly believe that the best Whistler vacations should always include an exploration of the surrounding areas. These areas are off the beaten path and allow you to immerse yourself in the true Canadian wilderness. Everyone will return to Whistler at the end of the day rejuvenated and refreshed.

1. Hike the Chief in Squamish

Accomplish something great in half a day. Drive the quick 30 minutes from Function Junction down to the Southern end of Squamish and keep an eye out for the monolith of granite which towers over the ocean town. You can’t miss it.

Wear proper footwear, bring lots of water, and maybe a layer for the top, and you are ready to go. This hike is strenuous, so be prepared, but it’s well worth the sweat. Its roughly one to two hours of straight up, but take your time and power through.

When you get to the top, you’ll understand what we are talking about – the view of the entire Howe Sound is to die for. Usually this hike is suitable for active people, and for most children 10 years of age and older.

2. Don’t Forget to Hike and Bike in Squamish

Fun activities for the family near Whistler should always include Squamish, the outdoor capital of North America. Squamish is about a 30-minute drive from Whistler and boasts some incredible trails for hiking and biking. In fact, drive down to Squamish on any given weekend in Summer, and it’s clearly a biking mecca.

Squamish is also the kitesurfing mecca of British Columbia, which makes for great entertainment even if you don’t want to take a lesson. Although if you do want to take a turn, check out Aerial Kiteboarding School, they will be happy to show you the ropes (and the kite!)  For those less inclined to try it out, ‘The Spit’ is still a great destination to hit in Squamish. Pull out the picnic blanket and watch the pros.

3. Beer Tour Day Trip

A flight of beer samples

Try a flight of samples from one of our favourite Squamish Breweries

Find your designated driver, and buckle up because within a single day you can hit up five breweries in Whistler and in Squamish. Start around lunch time in Squamish, hit up Backcountry Brewery for a delicious thin-crust artisan pizza.

Next round at Howe Sound Brewery for their award winning beers, and before you leave Squamish for good don’t forget about the family friendly A-Frame brewery.

Next up in Whistler you’ve got two breweries on your brewery tour hit list – and both in function junction right next to Forged Axe throwing.   Whistler Brewery puts on an excellent brewery tour, samples included, followed by Coast Mountain for a potent IPA or delicious sour. And since you’re so close, why not stop by for a friendly competition of axe throwing?

If you want a deep dive into our favourite beers, head on over to our Whistler Beer Guide .

4. Pemberton for Lunch a Break

Pemberton is a little town further North of Whistler. It is a perfect farming and ranching community nestled in a valley between some pretty picturesque mountains. Like Squamish, you can hike, bike, and camp in Pemberton, but it’s also nice to just take the afternoon off from the hustle and bustle of Whistler village.

Pemberton has some great spots for lunch using much of the bounty growing locally. Some of the mentionable lunch spots include Mile One Eating House and The Pony . If you go there in midsummer, you can even take the family out to a U-Pick for some delicious family fun.

Of course, you can always stay in Pemberton for a full day –  Whistler Day Trippin’ to Pemberton.

5. Take an Epic Selfie for Instagram at Joffre Lakes

Glacier fed crystal clear lakes make Joffre Lake the perfect picnic destination

Glacier fed crystal clear lakes make Joffre Lake the perfect picnic destination. Joffre Lakes Provincial Park is 35 km East of Pemberton (but still North of Whistler) on the Duffey Lake Road. There are a total of three glacier lakes in the park.

The lower Joffre Lake is a brief walk into the park which makes its easy for the whole family, and the moment you see the glacier water, you’ll certainly be invigorated. Joffre Lakes Park has some of the most accessible pristine turquoise water available locally, plus the backdrop of the Joffre Glacier towering over you.

If you choose to see the other lakes, make sure you prepare, as you’ll need food and an adventurous group because it’s a 10 km round trip hike to the top and back. It is not for the faint of heart.

6. A Day of Adventure at Cougar Mountain

One of the best day trips in the Whistler region, suitable for the entire family, is Cougar Mountain. An easy hike in the area is The Ancient Cedars Trail; a pure scenic route through the forest. The entrance is located just North of Whistler, and the trail is named in honour of the majestic ancient cedars that exist within it.

In the end, you and your family will be in a grove of huge old growth trees. The road to get to the trailhead is located on 4.5 km of dirt road, accessible during the summer months.

Most cars can drive this road without concern. The Adventure Group offers you and your family a different way of seeing the area. You can rent an ATV, a Jeep, or even a canoe tour through the area. They tailor tours based on what your group can handle, and the guides are all fully licensed.

7. Explore Cheakamus River by White Water Raft

Wedge Rafting is the place to be when you want to get wet and wild!

Wedge Rafting is the place to be when you want to get wet and wild! Making it a perfect fit for family trips. Plus, the scenery is outstanding! The rapids are usually Class 1-2,  which means they are easy to navigate.

You won’t have to do much paddling so you can sit back and take in the stunning backdrop. A rafting trip lasts all day, beginning in Whistler. Wedge Rafting covers all your needs including transportation to where the raft puts into the water, lunch, entertaining guides, and the return trip.

8. Glacier Mountain Tours by Float Plane

If you’re looking to make some Instagram worthy memories, a floatplane tour is the way to do that. Flights leave from Green Lake which is about a 5-minute drive north of the village, and they fly over breathtaking glaciers, mountain peaks and take in spectacular volcanic formations.

One of the flyovers is to Garibaldi Lake, which takes over a day to hike to if you were so inclined. The pilots are all wonderful tour guides and provide a stream of information about all the surrounding areas. Affordable packages start at just over $100 CAD, with the flight lasting about 30 minutes.

Once you are back on the ground, you and your family can enjoy the peace of Green Lake.

9. Hot Springs in the Whistler Area

There are a fair number of hot springs in British Columbia, and a few are easily accessible on day trips from Whistler. Family activities near Whistler don’t always have to be adrenaline filled; they can also be a gentle dip in a hot natural spring.

Getting out into the forest and getting into natural hot springs is a once in a lifetime experience. While some are accessible only by 4 X 4 or vigorous all-day hikes, let’s just focus on the ones accessible to a Honda Civic. Keep in mind not all rental car companies cover dirt roads, however, a company might not insure you if something happens to the car while you’re off-road.

Skookumchuck Hot Springs

This hot spring is on the historic Harrison Lillooet Gold Rush Trail on the way to Sloquet Hot Springs . The drive is two hours with about 45 minutes on a gravel road. One hot tip from those in the know, you may want to go early and leave early if you’re bringing the family unless you’re a liberated bunch.

Locals tend to like to get down to their birthday suits and play music while indulging in the natural surroundings. While still being fed by a natural source, which is too hot to swim in itself, the caretakers have put together a series of different eclectic tubs for people to soak in. Each comes with a direct tap from the source and a cold line, making it easy to adjust the temperature to whatever you want.

Sloquet Hot Springs

When you get here, you will be blown away by the naturally fed hot springs that sit deep in the BC wilderness. You can camp overnight here if you’re prepared. The hot springs here are quite expansive and powered by a hot, steamy waterfall. While a bit of a longer trek from the village, the Sloquet Springs are quintessentially BC backcountry beauty.

These hot springs are just over 3 hours away from the main village in Whistler…. or you could just bike there with these fine folks.

10. Historical Tour of the Sea to Sky Corridor

If you’ve ever driven the Sea to Sky Highway, you probably noticed a large, looming building built against the rock at Britannia Beach. The Britannia Mining Museum one of the most surprisingly entertaining tours to explore. Besides the standard room filled with old mining equipment, rocks and place to pan for gold, there is also an in-depth mine tour.

The tour takes you deep into the mountain, on a tiny train, and provides an extremely riveting historical lesson. If trains are your thing, there is also the The West Coast Railway Heritage Park in Squamish which is where the Royal Hudson, a steam train that used to service the corridor, has retired to.

11. Lillooet and Remnants of Days Gone By

People explore first nations history on a tour

Learn about local culture in Lillooet, take a tour with the experts

If you and the family have an interest in British Columbia’s provincial history, Lillooet is a great day trip from Whistler. Just a two-hour drive but on an entirely different vibration. Be sure to stop at Seton Lake on route for a quick dip, and the kids will love Kaoham Shuttle , the short train ride that takes them from Seton Lake to Seton Portage.

It should be noted that the shuttle might be restricted to local traffic, so it’s not always a guarantee you’ll be able to catch it. In Lillooet, there is also the Xwísten Experience Tours by the St’at’imc people. The tour shows you the traditional fishing grounds and demonstrates how the community continues to preserve salmon using traditional methods to this day. The tour takes place on an archaeological village site where there is also a replica of an underground pit house. A final stop in Lillooet should include the historical home, Miyazaki House , which used to house the most prominent families that once lived in Lillooet around the time of the gold rush. There are plenty of interesting old photos and antiques to see. They also host local arts and concerts on Wednesday evenings during the summer.

12. A Round of Golf at Furry Creek

If you love golf, and have exhausted the options in Whistler, why not head down to the world renowned Furry Creek golf course , about an hour south of Whistler. It is a picture perfect community, with one-of-a-kind views of How Sound from almost ever green.

Plus, for any film buffs out there, you might recognize parts of the landscape. The cult classic Happy Gilmore was filmed there in 1996. So find your “Green jacket, gold jacket who gives a crap?” and ramp up your golf swing. Here is a reminder of what you could reenact.

When seeking out Whistler family activities, there are so many things on offer. You can play tourist in a small town like Squamish and Lillooet or head out into the wilderness. The list doesn’t stop at twelve; this is just a taste of what the region has on offer!

Solo Trips And Tips

Joffre Lakes Hike (Perfect Whistler Day Trip)

By: Author Susan Moore

Posted on Last updated: January 24, 2024

While spending a weekend in Whistler I wanted to do a hike with pretty mountain views and I found Joffre Lakes hike in nearby Pemberton BC. From Whistler it’s a 1-hour scenic drive to Joffre Lakes trailhead.

The trail gets busy, especially on weekends, so the earlier you start the better your chances of enjoying the trail with fewer hikers. On the contrary if you are hiking solo and want to meet up with other hikers on the trail, get there around mid-morning or in the afternoon.

Joffre Lakes hike is a beautiful trail and an easy day trip from Whistler.

Joffre Lakes Hike - Whistler day trip

Joffre Lakes Hike

Where is joffre lakes.

Joffre Lakes trailhead is located in the Joffre Lakes Provincial Park in the southwest region of British Columbia.

Joffre Lakes is a good day trip from Whistler or Pemberton. You could also do it as a day trip from Vancouver but I think spending a night or two in Whistler is better.

Distance to Joffre Lakes

  • 35 km (22 miles) east of Pemberton
  • 61.5 km (38 miles) northeast of Whistler
  • 180 km (112 miles) northeast of Vancouver

Joffre Lakes Day Pass

Day use pass to Joffre Lakes is required from early May to early October. You can get a free day use pass for Joffre Lakes at the BC Parks website .

Upper Joffre Lake is the trail summit with awesome mountain views surrounding the turquoise lake

Upper Joffre Lake is the trail summit with awesome mountain views surrounding the turquoise lake

Getting to Joffre Lakes from Whistler

61.5 km (38 miles) via BC Hwy 99 North – about 1 hour

Take BC Hwy 99 North and follow it for 61.5 km (38 miles) to the trailhead on the right side of the highway. Hwy 99 is also known as Duffey Lake Road along this stretch of road.

Getting to Joffre Lakes from Vancouver

180 km (112 miles) via BC Hwy 99 North – about 2.5 hours

That’s it for directions – get on Hwy 99 N and follow it all the way to the Joffre Lakes trailhead parking lot.

To get from Vancouver to Joffre Lakes you’ll take the beautiful and scenic Sea to Sky Highway which is BC Highway 99. The trip takes about 2.5 hours without making any stops. But a pit stop in Whistler to grab something to eat is my advice. You’ll need some fuel for energy to get you through the hike!

Driving from Vancouver to Whistler it’s 120 km (75 miles) and takes about 90 minutes. You’ll pass through Squamish along Hwy 99, another great place for hiking in BC.

Is the rest of the trail uphill? That is something you may wonder after reaching Lower Joffre Lake and hiking to Middle Joffre Lake. It’s a steady incline so you may want to stop for rest breaks.

On a hot sunny day I felt like I was getting a good workout as I walked steadily up the mountain trail.

Live the Adventure!

 alt=

Only two hours from Vancouver, Whistler is both an essential and easy day trip. To get there, follow the Sea to Sky Highway, which begins at sea-level and slowly winds upwards through the towering Coastal Mountains and lush old-growth forests while offering jaw-dropping views of Howe Sound along the way. If you have time, stop at Shannon Falls just off the highway. A short, 10-minute walk from the parking lot leads you to a beautiful view of the third highest waterfall in British Columbia .

The Village Stroll

After parking, begin your adventure at the Olympic Plaza. Snap a photo at the famous Olympic rings, then follow the path over the small bridge and into the village.

Boutique Shopping

What better way to stretch the legs after a long drive than shopping? The village offers many local boutiques and some of the most unique retail collectives in the country. Whether you have a proclivity for action sports gear, trendy fashion, or one-of-a-kind souvenirs, you can find it all along the village stroll.

Don’t worry, I’d never forgotten about coffee. There is a multitude of Australians that work in Whistler each year – so many that the town is playfully nicknamed “Whistralia”. And of course, a lot of Aussies means a lot of great coffee! Stop for a cup, or a handheld treat at Moguls or Mount Currie Coffee Co. along your stroll.

Peak 2 Peak Gondola

So, you’ve seen Whistler from the ground…but what about seeing it from the sky? Whether winter or summer, if there’s one thing you must do in Whistler it is the Peak to Peak Gondola . The gondola is Guinness World Record-breaking for the longest and highest lift, connecting Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. The ride offers awe-inspiring views of BC’s volcanic mountain ranges and stunning coastal rainforests. At the top, walk the Cloudraker Skybridge – a 130m suspension bridge spanning the Whistler bowl – or take in a 360-degree view of Whistler Peak from the Raven’s Eye Cliff Walk. If you enjoy your food with a side of striking mountain views, eat lunch or grab a coffee at the Roundhouse Lodge before heading back down the mountain.

Beyond the Village

If winter in Whistler is all about skiing, then summer is all about biking. After the snow has melted, the normally snow-covered runs turn into steep, gravity-fed mountain-biking terrain. Stay and watch adrenaline junkies plummet down the trails, or… Rent a bike in town and explore the areas surrounding the village which are laced with paths for walking or biking. Be sure to stop by Lost Lake – a popular local watering hole – for a refreshing dip! You can also access Lost Lake from the Village by taking the free, number eight shuttle. The shuttle runs every fifteen minutes from the gondola transit exchange.

After a busy day of exploring the mountains and village of Whistler, you’re probably hungry. For a fun dining experience, try Bearfoot Bistro: it has a sabering room for Champagne, and the Ketel One Ice Room, the coldest vodka tasting room in the world. Brrrr. Feeling French? Try Crepe Montagne, which offers both sweet and savoury crepes perfect not just for breakfast. Need a quick Canadian bite? If you haven’t tried poutine yet, now is your chance. Located near the gondola, Zogs serves up a mean plate of mouth-watering fries, cheese and gravy. (Hey, we never said it’d be healthy, we said it’d be worth it.)

I Scream You Scream

Eating ice cream every day is one of the unwritten rules of vacation. Don’t forget to stop by COWS ice cream for a sweet end to your day. For an extra Canadian treat, load up your homemade waffle cone with a scoop of Cownadian Maple (maple ice cream with maple swirls and maple cookie chunks…oh my!)

So, What are You Waiting for?

Winter or summer, Whistler is not called the “Valley of Dreams” for nothing. Even without the snow, it is a must-see destination. Whether you’re looking for nature, adventures, shopping, or straight-up spectacular views – Whistler has it all.

The Sea to Sky Highway passes by Howe Sound

Are Vancouver to Whistler Day Tours Worth It?

Not every traveller has $200.00 to head up the Sea to Sky Highway for a 10-hour tour or even more for a private tour from Vancouver to Whistler.

If these prices seem a little high, you may want to consider the Vancouver to Whistler bus then doing things on your own.

This provides a shuttle service from downtown or Vancouver airport to Whistler in as little as 90 minutes.

That said, you won’t be able to visit destinations like Shannon Falls, the Squamish Lil’Wat Cultural Centre, and the Sea to Sky Gondola along the way.

If these things are important, and you value some structure and some guidance along the way, then guided tours of Whistler from Vancouver are something to seriously consider.

Vancouver to Whistler Tours FAQ

How much do whistler tours from vancouver cost.

The basic Whistler & Shannon Falls, Whistler & Sea to Sky Gondola and Whistler trail and village tours start at around $150-215 CAD. From there, the prices can rise exponentially for Whistler floatplane tours ($473.27) and private tours ($675.00).

What are the best Whistler tours from Vancouver?

The best Vancouver Whistler tours for most travellers are the Whistler & Shannon Falls day tour and the Whistler & Sea to Sky Gondola tours .

The former offers more of a cultural experience with a visit to the Squamish Lil’Wat Cultural Centre, while the latter is catered to those more interested in the area’s natural beauty.

However, both options are reasonably affordable and provide some flexibility once you arrive in Whistler Village.

Having said that, if you’re willing to spend a bit more, the Whistler Seaplane Tour and Whistler Private Tour will obviously offer the highest degree of time, flexibility and freedom.

This will allow you to explore more of the region’s unparalleled natural beauty and outdoor activities or engage in additional Whistler day tours.

What will I see on my Whistler tour from Vancouver?

While each 1-day tour from Vancouver to Whistler differs slightly according to its focus, you’re guaranteed to encounter stunning oceanic and mountain scenery along the Sea to Sky Highway to Whistler.

From there you may stop at destinations like the Shannon Falls Provincial Park, Squamish or Sea to Sky Gondola to further hammer home the region’s cultural significance and natural beauty.

In most instances, you’ll then be provided with a few hours of free time to do as you please upon arrival in Whistler. You can engage in outdoor activities, check out the local dining scene or take in a quick tour – it’s entirely up to you.

What do I need to bring with me on my Vancouver to Whistler Tour?

Firstly, for Vancouver day tours to Whistler, I’d recommend bringing weather-suitable clothing.

Remember that there can be significant divergences in temperature between Vancouver and Whistler. During the winter, it is obviously much cooler at altitude – with a higher probability of snowfall.

Surprisingly, in the summer months, Whistler is actually a few degrees warmer.

If you plan on taking the Whistler Trail and Village tour, comfortable shoes & clothing, a sun hat, water and snacks would be recommended.

Other than that, the first thing I’d recommend for any top-day trip from Vancouver to Whistler is to bring a camera.

The alpine and oceanic scenery you’ll encounter is virtually unparalleled — and smartphones aren’t always up to the task. Most tours will also require you to bring a photo ID (passport or ID card) and your smartphone ticket in order to board.

Trump Has Been Convicted. Here’s What Happens Next.

Donald J. Trump has promised to appeal, but he may face limits on his ability to travel and to vote as he campaigns for the White House.

  • Share full article

Donald J. Trump in a dark suit, red tie and white shirt.

By Jesse McKinley and Maggie Astor

  • May 30, 2024

The conviction of former President Donald J. Trump on Thursday is just the latest step in his legal odyssey in New York’s court system. The judge, Juan M. Merchan, set Mr. Trump’s sentencing for July 11, at which point he could be sentenced to as much as four years behind bars, or to probation.

It won’t stop him from running for president, though: There is no legal prohibition on felons doing that . No constitutional provision would stop him even from serving as president from a prison cell, though in practice that would trigger a crisis that courts would almost certainly have to resolve.

His ability to vote — for himself, presumably — depends on whether he is sentenced to prison. Florida, where he is registered, requires felons convicted there to complete their full sentence, including parole or probation, before regaining voting rights. But when Floridians are convicted in another state, Florida defers to the laws of that state, and New York disenfranchises felons only while they are in prison.

good day trips from whistler

The Trump Manhattan Criminal Verdict, Count By Count

Former President Donald J. Trump faced 34 felony charges of falsifying business records, related to the reimbursement of hush money paid to the porn star Stormy Daniels in order to cover up a sex scandal around the 2016 presidential election.

“Because Florida recognizes voting rights restoration in the state of conviction, and because New York’s law states that those with a felony conviction do not lose their right to vote unless they are incarcerated during the election, then Trump will not lose his right to vote in this case unless he is in prison on Election Day,” said Blair Bowie, a lawyer at the Campaign Legal Center, a nonprofit watchdog group.

Mr. Trump will almost certainly appeal his conviction, after months of criticizing the case and attacking the Manhattan district attorney, who brought it, and Justice Merchan, who presided over his trial.

Long before that appeal is heard, however, Mr. Trump will be enmeshed in the gears of the criminal justice system.

A pre-sentencing report makes recommendations based on the defendant’s criminal record — Mr. Trump had none before this case — as well as his personal history and the crime itself. The former president was found guilty of falsifying business records in relation to a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, a porn star who says she had a brief sexual tryst with Mr. Trump in 2006, in order to buy her silence.

At the pre-sentence interview, a psychologist or social worker working for the probation department may also talk to Mr. Trump, during which time the defendant can “try to make a good impression and explain why he or she deserves a lighter punishment,” according to the New York State Unified Court System.

The pre-sentencing report can also include submissions from the defense, and may describe whether “the defendant is in a counseling program or has a steady job.”

In Mr. Trump’s case, of course, he is applying — as it were — for a steady job as president of the United States, a campaign that may be complicated by his new status as a felon. Mr. Trump will likely be required to regularly report to a probation officer, and rules on travel could be imposed.

Mr. Trump was convicted of 34 Class E felonies, New York’s lowest level , each of which carry a potential penalty of up to four years in prison. Probation or home confinement are other possibilities that Justice Merchan can consider.

That said, Justice Merchan has indicated in the past that he takes white-collar crime seriously . If he did impose prison time, he would likely impose the punishment concurrently, meaning that Mr. Trump would serve time on each of the counts he was convicted of simultaneously.

If Mr. Trump were instead sentenced to probation, he could still be jailed if he were later found to have committed additional crimes. Mr. Trump, 77, currently faces three other criminal cases: two federal, dealing with his handling of classified documents and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election , and a state case in Georgia that concerns election interference.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers can file a notice of appeal after sentencing, scheduled for July 11 at 10 a.m. And the judge could stay any punishment during an appeal, something that could delay punishment beyond Election Day.

The proceedings will continue even if he wins: Because it’s a state case, not federal, Mr. Trump would have no power as president to pardon himself .

Guilty Verdict : Donald Trump was convicted on all 34 counts  of falsifying records to cover up a sex scandal that threatened his bid for the White House in 2016, making him the first American president to be declared a felon .

What Happens Next: Trump’s sentencing hearing on July 11 will trigger a long and winding appeals process , though he has few ways to overturn the decision .

Reactions: Trump’s conviction reverberated quickly across the country  and around the world . Here’s what voters , New Yorkers , Republicans , Trump supporters  and President Biden  had to say.

The Presidential Race : The political fallout of Trump’s conviction is far from certain , but the verdict will test America’s traditions, legal institutions and ability to hold an election under historic partisan tension .

Making the Case: Over six weeks and the testimony of 20 witnesses, the Manhattan district attorney’s office wove a sprawling story  of election interference and falsified business records.

Legal Luck Runs Out: The four criminal cases that threatened Trump’s freedom had been stumbling along, pleasing his advisers. Then his good fortune expired .

On D-Day, they changed the world. 80 years later, an incredible journey takes them back.

good day trips from whistler

EN ROUTE TO FRANCE – Robert Pedigo had a hunch.

He and his bomber crew, based in England, had been flying missions against the Nazis. Then, on a late spring evening in 1944, a commander took each squadron into a nearby wheat field to give them special instruction.

“Men, go get a good night’s rest,” he said, “because we have an important mission tomorrow.”

The commander, he has always remembered, was Jimmy Stewart, the star who had left Hollywood to lead air attacks throughout World War II. Pedigo and the rest of the flight crew bedded down. The wakeup call would come at 2:30 the next morning, June 6.

Pedigo, from Indianapolis, had sold scrap metal and worked other jobs during the Great Depression to help support his family before enlisting in the Army Air Corps. Now he was a nose gunner and air bomber on a crew of 10 in the 453rd Bombardment group. Their B-24J Liberator, nicknamed the Silent Yokum, took off into the morning sky.

As they crossed the English Channel, Pedigo looked down and couldn’t believe his eyes. He had been right. It was something big.

Instead of just water, he saw ships, so many that he could have walked across the channel, using the boats as stepping stones.

Instead of just sky, he saw fighters, heavy bombers, C-47 troop transports, every kind of plane imaginable.

It was June 6, 1944, the day the rest of the world would soon know as D-Day .

From his seat at the nose gun, Pedigo could see it happening. Above, below and all around him, every boat and plane was headed in the same direction he was. Toward Normandy.

May 30, 2024: Fort Worth, Texas

With the ballroom lights dim, a 50-member choir of cadets from the U.S. military academies assembled on stage. They launched into a patriotic number, the closing event of the evening.

Spread out in front of them was a crowd of hundreds, but 66 were particularly important.

World War II veterans, each was accompanied by a family member or guardian. Eight decades after D-Day, they were gathering in Texas for the start of a new mission.

They were chosen to make an honor flight aboard a chartered Boeing 787 provided by American Airlines. The party also included six Medal of Honor winners from wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam and two “Rosie the Riveters,” women who made invaluable contributions to the war effort by working in factories and shipyards. In total, some 280 people would make up the entourage.

Together, they would be headed back to France, back to the scene of D-Day itself.

The journey would lead them to the beaches once code-named Omaha and Utah, where several of the men among the 66 had fought in some of the bloodiest combat of D-Day.

Atop the steep cliffs above Omaha Beach, President Joe Biden and other world leaders will mark the 80th anniversary of the invasion on Thursday.

The 66 vets will be there, too, at Normandy American Cemetery, where more than 9,000 fallen Americans – people who were once just like them – rest forever beneath French soil.

The trip to get there required more than a year of planning. But its official beginning was with a gala ball on May 30, the night before departure.

One or two at a time, the vets entered. People pulled out their phones and snapped pictures. David Yoho, 95, from Vienna, Virginia, did an animated bow as the crowd cheered.

Behind him, some rode in wheelchairs. Others, slightly stooped, leaned on canes. A few wore military uniforms decorated with medals.

Inside the ballroom at American Airlines’ headquarters, the veterans exchanged war stories and dined on Provencal short ribs, lump crab cakes and apple pie topped with creamy French brie. A few got up from their tables and slow danced to bands covering Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope and the Andrews Sisters.

Dan Dougherty, an Army veteran who was on the first ship to go directly from the United States to France during the war, celebrated his 99 th birthday. The entire room serenaded him with “Happy Birthday.”

The mood was celebratory, but statistics added some poignancy to the pageantry.

The youngest of the 66 making the journey was 95; the oldest 107. Their average age: 100.8.

About a third of the adult male population of the United States served at some point during World War II . The armed forces included about 16.5 million men and women in all.

Today, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, less than 1% of them are still alive.

For some of the 66 veterans, this flight would be their first trip to Normandy since the war. For all of them, it would most likely be their last.

“You launched the largest wave of freedom across our world,” former President George W. Bush said in a videotaped message. “Billions of people have lived in liberty because of what you did 80 years ago.”

Watching him was Dominick Critelli, 103, an Army veteran who landed on Utah Beach a few days after the D-Day invasion and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Critelli had immigrated to the United States from Italy when he was only 8, during the dictatorship of Benito Mussolini, “where they were shooting everybody and giving them poison.”

“I can’t forget that,” he said.

In America, he found a new home, one he would later fight for.

Finally, the choir took to the stage. The song filled the room.

From the mountains, to the prairies, to the oceans white with foam.

From his table at the back, Critelli silently mouthed the words.

1944: D-Day at Omaha Beach, France

Sid Edson got up early and went from breakfast to a briefing and then to his bomber.

“My God,” he thought just before he climbed into his plane. “Today is the day.”

Edson had been a welder in Brooklyn before he was drafted into the Air Force in 1943. He worked as a radio operator and a gunner in a B-24 Liberator as part of Bomb Squadron 491. On the morning of June 6, the squadron’s mission was to bomb a German airfield in France.

“We were hoping it would help the soldiers invading all of the beaches,” recalls Edson, who now lives  in Lake Worth, Florida.

Edson wouldn’t remember much about the flight to France that day. He was too focused on doing his job. A radio operator had to make sure the flight crew was monitoring correct frequencies. And that the bomber's complex intercom system was functioning properly so the crew could communicate with each other. Edson also doubled as a gunner. He had to be prepared, on a moment’s notice, to man the bomber’s giant machine guns and open fire.

An eerie radio silence filled the plane as it neared its target. The approaching Americans didn’t want to say anything that might tip off the Germans about what was about to hit them.

May 31, 2024: Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport

By 5 p.m. Friday, a sizable crowd had begun to form in Terminal D to watch the parade pass by.

Boy Scouts in tan-and-green uniforms waved American flags. Travelers hurrying to catch a flight slowed to check out the commotion. Others squatted beside the white-haired men and asked for permission to take selfies.

American Airlines began planning the trip 18 months ago. The Old Glory Honor Flight, a nonprofit group that has arranged other trips for veterans, helped recruit applicants, train their guardians and provide the medical staff volunteers. A foundation led by actor Gary Sinise also helped put the trip together.

Veterans selected to make the trip were required to get a medical exam to determine that they were healthy enough to travel. Seventy-five wheelchairs were available if needed – enough for every veteran on board.

Most of the veterans stayed in wheelchairs for the short ride from gate D24 to D29, where they would board a plane for the 5,000-mile, 8½-hour flight to Paris.

Willie Clemons, 96, who joined the Navy after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor , saluted the cheering crowd that swelled with each passing minute.

Passengers waiting at gate D27 for a flight to Barcelona jumped from their seats and applauded. A woman working the counter at Dickey’s Barbecue Pit collected orders while keeping her eyes on the festivities.

Andi Goldsticker of Dallas stood off to the side and held a sign thanking the veterans for their bravery and sacrifices in service to the country. “Because of YOU,” it read, “we are safe and free.”

Goldsticker’s father-in-law, Ralph Goldsticker, 102, a bombardier who flew missions on D-Day, was making the trip to France. His son, Andi’s husband Larry, was accompanying him.

As she watched, she recalled the way her father-in-law had described the war. “Every time I dropped a bomb,” he would say, “I thought I was going to die.”

At the boarding gate, the wheelchairs turned down the jetway.

The 66 made their way down the plane’s double aisles. Above them, a photo and bio of each was taped to the overhead luggage bins.

Festoons of red, white and blue stars were draped across cabin walls. Small American flags were tucked behind the passenger seat headrests.

Over the intercom, the announcements were tailored to the century-old travelers.

Take your medicines. Drink plenty of liquids. Be sure to change sitting positions every few hours.

In the rows behind the vets was a 12-member volunteer medical team. Emergency room doctors and nurses, a paramedic and nurse practitioners would roam the plane throughout the flight.

Anyone experiencing a health issue should alert the crew right away.

The orange Texas sunset glared through the cabin windows as the plane rolled, lifted off and pointed toward France.

1944: Omaha Beach, France

Dead bodies lay scattered on Omaha Beach when Vernon Mitchell landed.

Mitchell, a gunner, had known precious little about the military before he enlisted in the Army in 1940. But jobs were hard to come by in St. Augustine, Texas, after the Great Depression. After working his entire young life on a farm, he signed up for the service at age 19. A few short years later, he was wading ashore in France.

It was Wednesday, June 7. The first wave of the Allied invasion – and the most intense fighting – had taken place the day before. Over the course of the invasion, about 2,400 U.S. soldiers, more than 1,400 British and nearly 1,100 Canadians would be killed.

Countless German soldiers died, too, but the Germans had already picked up many of their corpses by the time Mitchell landed. Dead soldiers were bad for morale.

When Mitchell and other members of the Army’s 2nd Infantry Division stepped onto the shore, they were smacked by German artillery fire.

“They were still bombarding the place,” Mitchell remembers. “It was terrible.”

Mitchell and his comrades fought their way out of Omaha Beach. Days later, however, Mitchell was heavily wounded when a German shell hit his squad. Two of his fellow soldiers died.

June 1, 2024: Somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean

The overhead lights in the first-class cabin were on dim as the airliner zipped across the Atlantic Ocean at 37,000 feet. A little past midnight, there were still 2,300 miles to go – roughly the halfway point to Paris.

Several veterans dozed quietly as a medical crew roamed periodically through the cabin. John Gleeson, however, was wide awake.

A blanket thrown over his legs to stay warm, Gleeson, 100, of Honolulu, was recalling the story of how he ended up among these 66 veterans.

His midnight memories were snippets of the entire war.

How the news of the bombing of Pearl Harbor had enraged him as a teenager in Long Beach, California.

How he couldn’t pick out Oahu on a map, but the day after Dec. 7, 1941, he enlisted in the Army. How he qualified for the Air Corps.

How he was sitting on a bluff overlooking the beach three years later when the radio blared with the news about D-Day. The feeling when he realized so many of the men being killed were the same age as he was.

Gleeson recalled going to his commanding officer and asking to go to gunnery school. How he was finally sent to fly combat missions over Europe.

“I just had a feeling,” he remembered, as the 787 soared through the night. “I’ve got to do something to help save the world, or save the United States.”

1944: Utah Beach, France

The landing craft pitched and swayed on the choppy water as it approached Utah Beach. But Martin Sylvester never got seasick.

The Brooklyn native had always been prone to carsickness. Around him, other soldiers from the Army’s 4th Infantry Division had grown sick from the turbulent tossing of their amphibious military vessel and were throwing up. Not Sylvester. Maybe, he surmised in his 2009 memoir, he was just too frightened.

The son of a tailor and a stay-at-home mom, Sylvester landed as part of the third wave of Allied forces on June 7. He and the other troops could hear gunfire in the distance as they waded through 3 feet of water and approached the shore. Yet they encountered no resistance from the Germans.

They walked to the top of a hill, where they came across a cement bunker with dead Germans inside and a field strewn with the corpses of animals – cows, horses, pigs and dogs, all killed by Navy artillery fire that had overshot the beach.

The crackle of small rifle fire suddenly filled the air. The Germans were shooting at them. The soldiers quickly ducked into a patch of hedgerows about seven feet apart and fired back. “When we fired, we went from hedgerow to hedgerow,” Sylvester recalled in an interview.

Sylvester and his comrades suffered only minimal casualties. The following January, however, he was hit by a sniper and taken as a prisoner of war in Fuhren, Germany. He escaped a couple of months later and hid in the basement of a one-room schoolhouse until he was picked up by an American armored unit that came through the town. He was recuperating in a Paris hospital when, on May 8, 1945, he heard loud noises and celebrations in the street.

The Germans had surrendered. The war would soon be over.

June 1, 2024: Paris

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Paris,” a member of the flight crew announced as the plane touched down at 11:48 a.m. Saturday at Charles de Gaulle Airport, named after the French general and World War II hero. The exhausted passengers applauded and cheered.

One at a time, the veterans disembarked with the help of family members and assistants, who pushed their wheelchairs down the narrow jetway. Inside the terminal, a long line of spectators held up photos of the veterans, waved French and American flags and shouted “thank you” in French accents.

At a brief airport ceremony, a handful of veterans slowly rose from their wheelchairs as young students in blue sweaters sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” and the French national anthem, “La Marseillaise.” Others, too tired to rise, stayed seated, hands over their hearts.

In France, veterans who had a role in the D-Day landings are not only considered honored guests, but are embraced as “cherished heroes,” Denise Campbell Bauer, the U.S. ambassador to France, told the gathering.

“Your presence here reminds us that behind the monumental scale of D-Day are real people, individuals with their own stories,” she said.

The last surviving World War II veterans are “the living witnesses to an era that shaped our world,” said Philippe Étienne, the former French ambassador to the United States.

From the back row, Pedigo was overwhelmed as he silently listened to the accolades.

“I have a tremendous connection, tremendous feelings for the buddies I lost there,” he said. “Tremendous feelings for people worldwide, especially the French people.”

While in Paris, the veterans would attend a ceremony at Suresnes American Cemetery and another beneath the Arc de Triomphe. Then on Monday, they would board buses to Normandy for the final leg of their journey, to stand where thousands of other Americans – people who were once just like them – rest forever beneath French soil.

Aboard the buses would be Martin Sylvester, 98, who had endured each day as a POW on two slices of bread and a cup of watery soup.

Vernon Mitchell, 103, who survived the shelling that killed two of his comrades, and was later awarded with the Purple Heart, Bronze star and the French Legion of Honor.

Sid Edson, 100 , who dropped his bombs successfully that day and only later pondered the fact that he had been in the air the entire time – and never set foot on French soil.

And 100-year-old Robert Pedigo, who always had the feeling that on June 6, something important was going to happen.
