Virtual Reality: Discover Vienna with the Future Bus

Dive into Vienna's history using Virtual Reality technology? Now you can with the Future Bus, which stops at important sights to bring the past to life at original settings using a VR headset.

Witness the assassination of Emperor Franz Joseph I? Look over Maria Theresa's shoulder in her study? Or perhaps go on a coach ride with Empress Sisi? All this becomes possible with the Future Bus, an exciting multi-sensory experience that plays out on multiple levels. The bus ride departs from right in front of the Albertina , behind the Vienna State Opera . But what usually happens on a normal city tour – putting on headphones, listening, and looking out of the window – takes an innovative turn on the Future Bus after the first stop.

Spectacular 360-degree view

The gong sounds, the participants put on a VR headset and dive into the history of famous Viennese places. They then become part of past epochs in a free rendering of the motto "in the thick of things, instead of just being there". Thanks to a virtual 360-degree view, Vienna's history is tangibly close – a direct and impressive encounter with the past. Because the Virtual Reality sequences are beautifully produced and have been created by professional actors, animators, directors and sound engineers. A large number of special effects also contribute to this virtual adventure.

The Ringstrasse as the central stage

The historic virtual city tour lasts one hour. It starts off along the Ringstrasse , but also visits the MuseumsQuartier , the Naschmarkt , and Schwarzenbergplatz. Tours are offered in 11 different languages. Full details on the tour can be found on the Future Bus website .

Future Bus Tours- A new way to experience Vienna’s highlights

When visiting Vienna, one of the best things you can do (Beside joining our secret walking tours of course…) is to take a bus tour and see Vienna’s highlights quickly and easily from the convenience of your bus seat. Most bus tours are quite standard, offering you an audio guide to listen to so that you can hear the fascinating stories of Vienna’s palaces, churches, gardens and other major sites.

One company that aims to revolutionise the way you enjoy bus tours is also our brand new partner- Future Bus Tours !

Future Bus Tours offers a brand new and unique way to explore Vienna. Through combining audio guide with an immersive virtual reality experience, you will get to not only see the sites but actually “visit them” and experience the historical events as they unfold.

The bus tour includes four stops nearby important sites such as Heldenplatz (heroes square), Votivkirche or the opera house). As the bus stops, you will be instructed to wear your VR glasses and enter a virtual world where you can meet Franz Joseph and Sisi, Sigmund Freud and event Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart!

We highly recommend this experience, especially for families who want to entertain their kids a bit more or want to try something less standard and more original! The tour itself lasts one hour and begins at Albertinaplatz right behind the Vienna state opera building. This spot is easy to reach and as the tour ends at the same spot, you can then easily continue your day from there and explore the places you’ve just seen in the tour.

We wish you a great time in our beloved city and look forward to welcoming you to our tours soon!

Visiting Vienna

Future bus VR tour

Front of a tour bus

Vienna has a fair few sightseeing bus tours to tempt visitors. One, however, takes you places no bus should really go, thanks to the magic of virtual reality. Here’s my review of the Future Bus tour…

  • Physical tour is relatively standard, but…
  • Travel into the past
  • Immerse yourself in historical events
  • Reach “heights” other buses can’t
  • Friendly staff, too
  • Book a Future Bus tour * online

A trip through time and Vienna

The Future Tour bus

(The stop on Albertinaplatz)

You won’t normally find me on any of the sightseeing buses, since I’ve done the routes and locations myself numerous times.

But the new Future Bus tour seemed a little different, so I packed pen and notebook and paid for a one-hour tour over a Saturday lunchtime.

Consider the experience as two parts.

The first is a sightseeing tour of the conventional kind. A pristine modern bus took us around some of the more central sights, with commentary from a live guide or through an audioguide.

So we passed the opera house , Kunsthistorisches Museum , Heldenplatz , the Burggarten park (and Mozart statue), for example, but also the Votivkirche and Karlskirche churches, and the Musikverein concert hall .

The Kunsthistorisches Museum

(The Kunsthistorisches Museum: one of the places you pass on the tour)

The live guide used German, but the audioguide comes in various languages, including English of course. The audio commentary offered much more colour and storytelling than your usual lists of names, dates, and historical facts.

I would have liked a few missing locations filled in (we passed Parliament and the Secession building without commentary, for example). I’m told the audioguide is going through refinements. A special children’s edition, for example, was due out after my trip.

So far, nothing out of the ordinary. But…

The second part is the virtual reality element, where you put on a headset at several stops and enjoy, well, quite an experience. I got goosebumps on occasion.

I really don’t want to spoil the surprise, should you take the tour. But the headset transports you into a variety of 360° environments.

Sometimes…

  • …modern-day Vienna slips back in time and you watch people in period costume walk past.
  • …statues come to life or your seat seems to take off into the air (it’s a struggle not to grip your arm rest). The VR quality has you looking over your shoulder to catch the aerial view of Vienna behind you.
  • …you end up immersed at the centre of some historical event.

Although animations and CGI play a role, the Future Bus VR includes historical reenactments with real people.

Statue of Archduke Carl

(Archduke Karl before we had VR: an equestrian statue on Heldenplatz square)

For example, you find yourself seated around a map in a field tent with Archduke Karl, back in 1809. He’s discussing tactics with his staff shortly before the Battle of Aspern and urges the officers (and you) to give Napoleon a proper slap. Spoiler: his pep talk worked .

All-in-all, the sightseeing is nice, but nothing unusual. The VR elements, however, really stand out and left me wide-eyed, smiling, and enthused.

The Future Bus tour makes a worthy addition to the sightseeing landscape. Next time, I’m taking my partner.

Tickets & tips

Buy your tickets direct from the website or an agency.

The Future Bus is also included in the Vienna All-inclusive Pass from Go City (see my review ).

If you enjoy the prospect of virtual reality, then you might like a few other related attractions in Vienna. Top examples include…

  • Time Travel Vienna combines 5D cinematic experiences, virtual reality, animatronics, and more to let you experience historical moments and themes
  • Sisi’s Amazing Journey has Empress Elisabeth take you on a fun (and often startingly unusual) virtual reality boat ride through, above, and below Vienna
  • Schloss Schönbrunn VR Experience offers a sit-down cinematic and VR journey through some Habsburg history over at Schönbrunn Palace

How to get to the bus

At the time of writing, the tour starts and ends at the very central Albertinaplatz, specifically the area reserved for buses outside the Albertina Museum (or on the right as you walk from there down Operngasse past the opera house).

Karlsplatz station is closest (U1, U2 and U4 subway lines) or take a tram to Oper/Karlsplatz (1, 2, 71, and D tram lines)

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!

Iconic sightseeing bus company makes electrifying changes to its touring fleet: 'Leading the way toward more sustainable travel'

T ootbus, an iconic sightseeing bus company in Europe, is partnering with electric vehicle company VEV to adapt its vehicles to battery electric vehicles and solar power.

Tootbus — which provides hop-on, hop-off and other tours in cities like Paris, London, Bath, and Versailles — and VEV plan to convert 30 Tootbuses to electric vehicles by 2029. Already at least three buses have been transformed into EVs.

"We recognised the enormous potential that switching to a complete end-to-end sustainable electric fleet could have in helping us achieve our emissions-reduction goals," said Gavin Brooking , managing director of Tootbus UK.

Since 2021, Tootbus has run its sightseeing fleet on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), which "reduces CO2 emissions by 90%." The new EVs for Tootbus will help achieve a reduction of 15,567 kilograms of pollution per year. Tootbus and VEV hope to achieve these goals by delivering renewable power through chargers, roof-mounted solar-power panels at Tootbus' depot, and optimized power supply.

"The bus and tourism sectors have a critical role to play in helping to decarbonise UK roads," said Mike Nakrani, CEO of VEV. "As the transition to electrification is set to gain pace over the immediate and longer-term future, leading players in these sectors have recognised that going green is not only the right thing to do, but is also a competitive advantage and are keen to make the switch as soon as possible."

Electric vehicles, which can save money and reduce harmful pollution , are increasing in popularity. In 2023, EV sales rose by 46% in the U.S., and the number is projected to increase in 2024, with one in nine cars sold to be electric.

Watch now: Danone executive shares how the company leverages 'rescued fruit' to create some of its products

For electric buses, the projections are slower, but they are on the rise. According to CALSTART , the U.S. saw 66% growth for electric buses in 2022. And there are plans to increase electric buses, with 60 new electric buses now operational in New York City and plans for fully electric buses by 2040 .

With government tax credits, international collaborations , and business innovations such as all-electric aircraft , we can see an increase in electric vehicles that help us breathe easier and lower long-term costs. The collaboration between VEV and Tootbus is one step forward in these goals.

"We're excited to be working with … Tootbus to demonstrate the invaluable impact that fleet electrification and smart energy management have in helping cities to reduce carbon emissions," Nakrani said. "We look forward to continuing to support them in leading the way toward more sustainable travel."

German tour operator FTI is filing for insolvency and canceling future trips

  • Copy Link copied

BERLIN (AP) — German tour operator FTI said Monday that it is filing for insolvency protection from creditors, and trips that haven’t yet started will be canceled or scaled back.

FTI Group, which describes itself as Europe’s third-biggest tour operator, said parent company FTI Touristik GmbH, was filing an application for the opening of insolvency proceedings at a Munich court.

Since an announcement in April that a consortium of investors would come on board, “booking figures have fallen well short of expectations despite the positive news,” the company said in a statement.

“In addition, numerous suppliers have insisted on advance payment,” it added. “As a result, there was an increased need for liquidity, which could no longer be bridged until the closing of the investor process,” making the insolvency filing a legal necessity.

The operator said it is working to ensure that trips that have already started can be completed as planned, but “trips that have not yet begun will probably no longer be possible or only partially possible from Tuesday.”

A support website and hotline were set up for customers affected.

The Munich-based FTI Group has over 11,000 employees.

Tesla drops Steam gaming support inside its vehicles

Avatar for Fred Lambert

Tesla is telling new Model S and Model X buyers that they won’t have access to Steam gaming inside their electric vehicles.

Even though Tesla has been investing heavily into integrating video games into its in-car entertainment system, it still surprised many when Tesla said earlier this year that  it planned to go as far as integrating Valve’s Steam, an online video game store and distribution platform, in its vehicles .

Steam has such a large library of games, including high performance games that haven’t been integrated into Tesla vehicles before.

In late 2022, Tesla officially launched its Steam Beta native app in new Model S and Model X vehicles.

However, we now learn that Tesla is dropping the feature. The automaker wrote to people taking delivery of new Model S and Model X vehicles:

Tesla is updating the gaming computer in your Model X and your vehicle is no longer capable of playing Steam games. All other entertainment and app functionalities are unaffected.

It doesn’t sound like current owners are affected by the change.

Top comment by Brad

Didn't they make a big deal out of this at the time? "As powerful gaming device as a PS5" etc? Since it's for new S/X buyers I suppose it's only dozens of people affected going forwards.

Tesla has been known to drop existing apps in new vehicles while keeping them in vehicles already delivered, like the Disney Plus app .

Electrek’s Take

I’m not so surprised. While it was an interesting idea, I’ve always maintained that if you want to game inside your Tesla, you’re better off with a mobile gaming device, whether it be a gaming laptop or Steam Deck or something like that.

Some games are enjoyable inside the Tesla, but it is a limited gaming rig. Maybe it is because it is a car.

I assume that Tesla saw that very few people were using Steam inside its vehicles and dropped it.

The Most Anticipated Concert Tours Of Summer 2024

Uproxx authors

Although summertime is often associated with festival season, there are also plenty of artists doing their own tours. Those artists may have some festival appearances scattered throughout their itineraries, but the sunny weather is a solid incentive to open up the outdoor amphitheaters and arenas for some memorable live music, fest or not. From Missy Elliott’s first-ever headlining tour to the indie-rock fan’s dream combo of The National and The War On Drugs , check out the most anticipated summer concert tours of 2024.

The London-born, Atlanta-bred rapper 21 Savage has been touring North America since May 1, but he has several arena and amphitheater dates left on the American Dream Tour. That includes stops in Southern cities like Tampa, West Palm Beach, Birmingham, and, of course, Atlanta. He’ll be joined by J.I.D, Nardo Wick, and 21 Lil Harold.

Following her recent solo album, the sparse, somber Bright Future , Lenker brings opening act Twain along for a slew of dates, many of which are sold out, starting June 9 in Austin.

Bryson Tiller

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bryson (@brysontiller)

Louisville vocalist and songwriter Bryson Tiller recently released his self-titled album back in April. He is currently touring behind it, and it continues through nearly all of June. Along the way, Tiller will make stops in cities like Nashville, Minneapolis, New York, Atlanta, and more.

Since her 2022 debut album, the dark, sprawling Preacher’s Daughter , Ethel Cain has steadily ascended through the ranks to become a pillar of indie-pop. Cain has hinted at new music here and there, but for now, she’s going to keep touring. That resumes with a North American tour this month following a slate of European dates. Her new schedule includes appearances at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Summerfest, Hinterland, and others.

Future / Metro Boomin

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Young Metro 3 Times 💔 (@metroboomin)

We Still Don’t Trust You unwittingly became the catalyst for the most fruitful hip-hop beef in recent memory when Kendrick Lamar dissed Drake and J. Cole during his guest verse on “Like That.” Future and Metro Boomin themselves have mostly stayed out of it — relatively, at least. After all, they do have a massive tour to focus on. The duo kicks things off in Kansas City on July 30 and wraps it up in Vancouver on Sept. 9.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Green Day (@greenday)

The Saviors Tour will travel across the globe, in which Bay Area pop-punk trio Green Day will perform their most iconic albums, 1994’s Dookie and 2004’s American Idiot , in full to respectively celebrate their 30th and 20th anniversaries. For select dates, they’ll bring along Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and The Linda Lindas.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ❕WUNNA❕🥷🏻✝️ (@gunna)

Gunna is a fixture of Atlanta rap, and he’s taking that idiosyncratic ATL style all over North America plus a small handful of European dates for The Bittersweet Tour. With opener Flo Milli, the YSL affiliate will visit cities like Miami, Orlando, and, obviously, Atlanta.

Janet Jackson

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Janet Jackson (@janetjackson)

The queen of new jack swing, Janet Jackson, will embark on a large North American tour starting June 4 in Palm Desert, California. For last year’s tour, she brought Ludacris along as her opener, and this year, she’s bringing St. Louis rapper Nelly. The Together Again Tour will make stops in Anaheim, Salt Lake City, Denver, St. Paul, and plenty more cities.

Jhené Aiko announces tour dates for ‘The Magic Hour Tour.’ She will be joined by Coi Leray, Tink, UMI, and Kiana Ledé. pic.twitter.com/WgAFyWlluF — Pop Crave (@PopCrave) March 26, 2024

From the middle of June to the end of August, Los Angeles R&B mainstay Jhené Aiko will tour North American arenas with openers Coi Leray, Tink, and Umi in tow. It kicks off at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena on June 19 and wraps up at Columbus’ Nationwide Arena on Aug. 22.

Justin Timberlake

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Justin Timberlake (@justintimberlake)

Earlier this year, Justin Timberlake released Everything I Thought It Was , his first studio album since 2018’s folk-tinged Man Of The Woods . To promote the new record, he’s currently on The Forget Tomorrow World Tour. It includes stops in cities like Tulsa, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, and many more.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Khruangbin (@khruangbin)

The Houston instrumental trio Khruangbin recently released A LA SALA , an album that leans into the group’s psych-pop proclivities. They’re touring behind it all summer in both Europe and North America, and joining them will be openers Arooj Aftab, Men I Trust, John Carroll Kirby, and Peter Cat Recording Co.

Lizzy McAlpine

View this post on Instagram A post shared by lizzy (@lizzymcalpine)

Back in April, singer and songwriter Lizzy McAlpine released her third studio album, Older . She’s celebrating its release with a summer tour that takes her all the way from Washington, D.C. to Sydney, Australia and back to the States. McAlpine has a busy summer ahead of her, but that gives you plenty of chances to catch her show.

Megan Thee Stallion

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Megan Thee Stallion (@theestallion)

Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion is bringing the Hot Girl Summer Tour all over the globe. It’s currently underway, having stopped at cities like Minneapolis and Baltimore and will soon head to places like New Orleans, Dallas, and Meg’s very own Houston. Joining her will be Memphis rapper GloRilla.

It’s hard to believe that someone as influential as Missy Elliott has never done her own headlining tour before. That is, until now. Alongside friends like Busta Rhymes, Timbaland, and Ciara, The Out Of This World Tour will start on July 4 in Vancouver and conclude on Aug. 22 in Rosemont, Illinois, right near the Chicago O’Hare International Airport. This is certainly a show you won’t want to miss.

Having wrapped up a slew of European dates, Mitski is headed back to the States in August to tour behind last year’s excellent The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We . She’ll usually be doing multiple nights at sizable theaters, such as three nights at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre and two nights at Detroit’s Masonic Temple Theatre. Joining her will be openers Arlo Parks, Lamp, Laufey, Alvvays, Wyatt Flores, Sharon Van Etten, and Sierra Ferrell, depending on the date.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ODESZA (@odesza)

Odesza is a go-to festival headliner for many booking agents, and it’s easy to understand why. Their seismic strain of EDM is perfect for big fields and arenas alike. They embark on The Last Goodbye Finale Tour with openers Big Boi, Bob Moses, and more in tow, performing multiple nights at Los Angeles’ BMO Stadium, Berkeley’s Greek Theatre, and NYC’s Madison Square Garden along the way, as well as a hometown-adjacent run at The Gorge.

Olivia Rodrigo

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Olivia Rodrigo (@oliviarodrigo)

If you managed to secure tickets to Olivia Rodrigo’s highly anticipated arena tour for her sophomore album, Guts , then count yourself lucky, as it’s completely sold out. She’ll spend June touring Europe before she returns to the U.S. with drum and bass/indie pop enthusiast PinkPantheress in July.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pearl Jam (@pearljam)

Eddie Vedder and co. have just released Dark Matter , their first album since 2020’s ill-timed Gigaton . To support the new record, they’ll perform all across the globe; the tour has currently taken them to Europe, and they’ll head back to the U.S. toward the end of August with opener Glen Hansard.

She’ll be performing in various amphitheaters with opening act Presley Regier. Her latest string of dates kicks off in her hometown of Calgary on July 5 and wraps up in New York on Aug. 22.

Taylor Swift

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift)

Cultural behemoth Taylor Swift is ready to stimulate some more local economies. The Eras Tour continues through Europe with openers Paramore all the way through late August. Fresh off the release of the messy, sprawling The Tortured Poets Department , 2024’s iteration of the tour now merges the Folklore and Evermore eras into one. But it also features a new set solely dedicated to TTPD .

The National / The War On Drugs

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The National (@thenational)

Indie dads rejoice! The National and The War On Drugs, as you’d expect, have a lot of overlap in terms of fandom. They’re both massive, beloved indie rock groups that always put on a spectacular show. Their co-headlining tour, dubbed the Zen Diagram Tour , will take them all over North American amphitheaters this September. Joining them is opener Lucius. Ahead of that, The National have a ton of dates this summer as they weave across Europe.

The Rolling Stones

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Rolling Stones (@therollingstones)

Last year, The Rolling Stones put out their first studio album in seven years, Hackney Diamonds . They’ll tour all over stadiums, including stops in Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, and more.

Now that he has finished his Las Vegas residency, he’ll kick off a run of sold-out arena dates starting with three nights in his hometown, Atlanta, on Aug. 14. It’ll run all the way through the end of November, with the three final U.S. dates in Houston.

Following a few festival sets in May, indie-rock outfit Vampire Weekend will play North American arenas and outdoor theaters all summer long. Touring their latest album, Only God Was Above Us , Vampire Weekend will take Ra Ra Riot, Cults, Mike Gordon, La Lom, and Christone “Kingfish” Ingram on the road before heading to Europe in December.

The Quittin Time Tour includes openers Sheryl Crow, Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit, Turnpike Troubadours, Sierra Ferrell, The Middle East, Levi Turner, and Matt Maeson.
