If you're already considering doing this tour, just book it now - you won't be disappointed. We're locals and booked the downtown food tour with our team to have some quality time together, eat delicious food, try some new places and just have a nice day out. This tour delivered all that and more! Victoria was our guide and was such a great host. She was so friendly and nice, but also introduced each stop and shared lots of great info about the places we were going, SLO, history and more. She also gave us space to chat between ourselves, took great photos and just made sure we were well taken care of everywhere we went. She even arranged for a tour of one of the stops that was really interesting, and was a joy to be around. Also, if you're wondering if this is a good amount of food and drinks - the answer is YES! We were all stuffed after our first stop already, and every place we visited was very generous with the portions as well as the drinks. Not to mention everything was delicious and very well made with fresh local ingredients. We had one person who was driving and didn't do any alcoholic drinks, but every stop had a great non-alcoholic option that was also creative and flavorful (not just water or soda...) The tour focuses on visiting smaller family owned gems with great stories and history, so whether you're visiting the area or a local looking for a great way to spend the day, I would highly recommend this tour!

Angee & Taste of SLO were amazing. We did the new MoJo tour, and she setup a great intro to San Luis Obispo's delicious foods, drinks & treats. We went to four different, unique spots and tasted delicious pastas, rotisserie chicken, locally caught fish, amazing local made chocolates and craft cocktails, beer & wine. Each place had a totally different and fun vibe, and were very welcoming and interesting. We didn't do a ton of walking, but got to try new places we wouldn't have found on our own - plus, how often do you actually hit up 4 spots just for lunch in one day? That's one of the things that makes this so great - you get to try more, learn something and have fun meeting new people. Would definitely recommend Taste of SLO when you're in the area!
Really fun activity to do if you are visiting SLO or even if you are a local. Have done two different tours with this company and both were great. The walking tour downtown is a lot of fun, and there actually is not too much walking to do. The tour at the Public Market is super low-key. Great diversity of delicious foods that is brought to you. How can you beat that? And both tours had a nice selection of adult beverages. Angee and her team are super fun, would highly recommend taking a tour with them.
Plenty of taps to pick from. Not just beer but wine and cider as well.
Fun public market with a great selection of tasty food.
We had an amazing afternoon with Angee of Taste of SLO! I bought this as a surprise for my boyfriend and it did not disappoint! We went to 5 different stops and learned about the history of San Luis Obispo along the way. The food was delicious and plentiful; a meal and beer to begin with followed by wine tasting & snacks, a cocktail and some brunch food, desserts and lastly macarons! I was so pleased with how Angee accommodated my dietary needs. When we arrived at Old SLO BBQ, there was a box clearly labeled "No Pork" and when we went to the Granada, she made sure I had my own salad since I wouldn't be eating the Cuban sandwich. It was extremely thoughtful and didn't feel like my dietary needs were an inconvenience. The tour was incredibly dog-friendly - my pup joined us the entire time and each stop offered him water and some even had dog treats. This was an awesome experience - highly recommend!!
this was a 12 out 10!! perfect blend of amazing food, great drinks, history and we had the most amazing group!! thank you ange & jenny! you made our visit to slo!! this tour is highlyyyy recommended!!
The fiancé and I just left and OMG!! We had the best group ever!! This is such a when strangers become friends type or deal. Story telling, food telling, the excitement and nervousness of what's next are all wrapped in this tour.. I love any small business that supports other small business and shares history about the restaurant location, culture creating the dish, and dish itself. A highly recommended activity for locals and visiting folks let me tell you!

Thank you for the lovely review Nick! Businesses supporting one another is what we’re all about in SLO. Cheers!
We have lived in SLO county for 13 years and somehow never done this tour! Victoria, our guide, was entertaining and informative and the food was awesome. What a great way to experience SLO and learn a little more about our town! Will definitely join them again for another tour in the future.
Having never been to SLO and looking at my agenda.. dumbfounded.. I didn't know where to start in planning this trip. Hello Google! I came across this through tripadvisor and all the good reviews...what a beautiful gem this activity was! First thought.. Hey.. That's a little expensive... Buut I'll 1. Treat myself, explore, and just try it. When in SLO! 2. Get to visit 5 restaurants... Food costs included in the ticket price! If you're going to eat in SLO, AND eat WELL... why not hit them up at the same time, with the same cost, with a tour guide/enthusiast?! (I thought it was great too ;) ) So.. Yesterday I participated in this tour. Angee was our food consultant- vibrant, enthused, and ready to show us this beautiful city and its gems by foot! She formulated this tour with the right balance tending to each course and flavor... Basic to exotic to nostalgic. We got to visit one of the popular BBQ stops followed by fresh breads to flavorful vegan and vegetarian food at vegetable butcher (which was surprisingly very very good!!!), all the way to a candy/gelato store and polishing off with the easiest drinking cocktail!! The foods were all remarkable and i would definitely be visiting each stop again... Especially the bakery for some loafs and sweet treats before leaving! Overall, i believe this tour was valuable and a great deal. For about $85/person, one can see and experience it all with an experienced local SLOby. Everything was very well thought out to the adventurous explorer who is open to trying something new! Don't worry- the foods weren't weird and fit the norms of food. I.e. BBQ looked like It's supposed to ;)
A snippet of some of the great foods we got to try!!!
Spent a wonderful Monday afternoon in San Luis Obispo with Angee. She is knowledgeable not only in the food and drink spots but also in new developments in the city and the general history of SLO. The tri tip, pulled pork and corn pie at Old San Luis BBQ were on point, the bread and pastries at House of Bread and the salads at Nourish were delish!! The finish at McConnell's ice cream and sangria at Luna Red hit the spot. Thank you, Angee. Highly recommend this intro to SLO food and drink!
Awesome experience at Taste of SLO-Walking Tour! We got to experience some of the delicious foods from SLO Public Market. Angie and Victoria were perfect hostesses! They were very knowledgeable about the food and even gave us background on the vendors. I highly recommend taking one of their tours. It's an experience you don't want to miss!
I participated in the Public Market tour. It was an amazing experience. We got to have food from 10 different locations with a choice of beer float or wine. The best part... I didn't even have to leave my seat!! The amazing and attentive tour guides just kept the food coming. There was a large variety of food from cheese, cookies, pad thai, pizza, ice cream, plantains, and my favorite the BAO BUNS from the highly demand Bing's Bao Buns. It really covered the whole spectrum of food from sweet to savory and I will most likely be doing this tour again with friends to experience eating from each of those great places again. Not only was all of the food amazing, but the knowledge of the food and businesses shared by the tour guides makes me want to support these local businesses even more. I will be a regular at the Public Market.

The Ultimate San Luis Obispo, CA Bucket List
Reading Time: 9 minutes
Located between the lush green peaks of mid-California lives San Luis Obispo, or SLO for short. Near the coast and with a vibrant downtown scene, SLO offers the perfect balance of outdoor and indoor activities for all. Whether you’ve lived in SLO for years or are looking to buy a home or rent an apartment here, below you’ll find a compilation of the top San Luis Obispo bucket list items. Ranging from downtown activities to cafes to hikes and bikes to restaurants, this bucket list has it all.
1. Check out a trendy art cafe
If you’re like many of us and you can’t start your day without being properly caffeinated, SLO has an abundance of local coffee shops to choose from. One of the more uber-cool spots is The Bunker which not only serves coffee from the Nautical Bean, another local coffee spot, but also acts as an art gallery/event space/artist studio. Even cooler, The Bunker “has a new art exhibit every month with an ‘all are welcome’ opening on the first Friday of the month and tons of live music, workshops and events during the evenings.”
Your future home is just a tap away
Located on one of SLO’s more ‘happening’ streets lives the weekly Downtown Farmers’ Market. The San Luis Obispo Guide boasts of the lively event: “Every Thursday evening, Higuera Street comes alive with live music and entertainment, the friendly chatter of locals and visitors alike, and the enticing aromas of delicious BBQ, fresh local produce from over 100 vendors, gourmet treats, and artisan goods.”
The Downtown Farmers’ Market is a great way to get involved with the community and support local businesses whether you’re grabbing a bite to eat, produce, or a handmade good. Shelby, from the travel blog Sedation Vacations , claims “There’s no better way to experience the vibe of the city than by going to the Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market!…[T]his bustling market spans five blocks and features over 100 local vendors starting at 6 pm every Thursday night. Whether you’re looking for fresh produce, hand-crafted goods, delectable bread and pastries, or just want to be entertained by live music while enjoying some famous Central Coast BBQ, there’s something for everyone at the Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market!”
3. Shop ‘till you drop
A San Luis Obispo must is exploring Downtown SLO and stopping at many – if not all – the cute stores. Although not in the Downtown area, one of the best is the SLO General Store which is located inside the SLO Public Market and is a one-stop shop for local gifts. Not only do they have a variety of great gifts, but the shop was “created with the mission to provide opportunities for local artisans and makers to connect with local consumers, the SLO General Store features over 80 local artisans, growers, and makers” and is definitely worth a visit.
4. Take a trip to Morro Bay
If you’re looking for an escape to the water, Morro Bay is the perfect little trip and is only a quick 20-minute drive from SLO. The Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce recommends three main activities: the Lost Isle Adventures tour to learn about the history of the bay, Morro Bay Boat Rentals for those wanting to captain their own 10’ boat, and Morro Bay Sub Sea Tours which features a harbor cocktail cruise, glass bottom boat, and whale watching. If you time it right, you’ll get to sea (get it?) whales on the bay as “Morro Bay is on the migration pattern to two different whale species, gray whales and humpback whales.”
5. Take the scenic route—by bike!
One of the main draws of SLO is its beautiful outdoors and “access to an incredible range of roads and trails” for a nature walk, run, rollerblade, or our recommendation — a bike ride! Whether you have your own bike or plan to rent one at a local bike shop, we recommend taking one of Cycle Central Coast’s routes to challenge elevation and descents amid the incredible coastal views. Specifically, their “endurance cycling excursion through our Morro Rock Descent route ” is a great one to climb the dirt paths and grit-testing inland hills of the Central Coast, or sample their range of long-distance routes. No matter your bike level, you’re sure to find the perfect scenic route.
6. Take a hike
There’s so much gorgeous scenery to explore in SLO, and much of it can be seen on a hike. Artist Bobby of Bobby Boss Art finds much inspiration from SLO’s gorgeous landscapes and recommends finding “a hiking buddy and explor[ing] a trail like the “M Trail” on Cerro San Luis” for “amazing views of the city, and quintessential nature experience for SLO.” In fact, the M Trail is just one of the three stops of the SLO “Tri Tip Peak Challenge.” This physical challenge includes hiking the M Trail, Bishop’s Peak, and California Polytechnic University’s “P” in one day, and ends at local eatery, Firestone Grill, for a tri-tip sandwich reward.
7. Try new cuisine
If a tri-tip sandwich isn’t your cup of tea, SLO has several incredible restaurants to choose from. If you’re looking to try a new cuisine, like Ethiopian, Ebony SLO is one of the best, and is both minority- and women-owned. Created with the goal of bringing community together over food, Ebony has indoor and outdoor seating which is perfect for those sunny California days, Ethiopian music, and “[It’s] a must visit for the amazing, vegan, organic and gluten-free food cooked with love and care.” according to the place itself. If you’re looking for unique fusion food, another great restaurant option is Todo Bueno All Good Grill , a wok-seared, California-Mexican joint. This place has balcony dining with a view of the SLO Public Market and a great selection of draft beers and local wines.
8. Sample wine with a side of adventure
Speaking of wine, if you’re of age, Uncorked Wine Tours offers a unique wine tour that combines a zipline excursion and tastings of local wine. If you’re curious about the day’s itinerary, they’ve outlined it for you: “[You’ll] begin your day soaring through the picturesque landscapes on a zipline excursion over lush vineyards at Margarita Adventures. Afterwards, immerse yourself in the region’s rich viticultural heritage with wine tastings and a delectable lunch at a charming winery. Finally, unwind with handcrafted spirits and a visit to a local brewery, completing an unforgettable exploration of SLO’s vibrant culture, and natural beauty.”
9. Soaring through SLO via helicopter
If you’re in the mood for even more adventure, add flying a helicopter to your San Luis Obispo bucket list. Helipro offers an introductory flight where you take the controls (with experienced instructors of course) to experience SLO from a new perspective. Helipro says this experience is for all levels: “Whether you’re a budding aviator or simply seeking an unforgettable adventure, this is your chance to elevate your senses and create lasting memories.” This unique experience provides hands-on experience for those wanting to soar through the skies and take in the picturesque SLO nature from a bird’s eye view.
10. Visit the lavender
Beyond the bay, Downtown, and the several peaks, SLO is also close by to beautiful farms. From mid-May to the end of June, luscious fields of lavender bloom at Hambly Farms . This farm features three football fields filled with various types of lavender, which is perfect for a late spring/early summer stroll. You can harvest a fresh bouquet, relax in the scent and enjoy the view, pack a picnic, visit the friendly farm animals, and check out “the farm store loaded with estate grown and crafted products like lavender essential oil and sachets and lots of treats to eat too – charcuterie boxes, gelato, and more” as Hambly Farms recommends.
11. Stop by a local bakery for a sweet little treat
If you’re in the mood for a treat after all those activities, or just have a bit of a sweet tooth, SLO is home to several tasty local bakeries. An SLO staple is SloDoCo, a donut shop featuring several flavors, seasonal specials (I love the worms n’ soil donut in the fall!), and options for different food preferences. Jackie, the gluten-free food blogger of Gluten Free Follow Me , recommends SloDoCo, especially for gluten-free eaters: “I’m gluten-free so I was excited to discover that they make GF donuts! I’ve tried the GF chocolate, lavender, vanilla, and maple donut flavors, and you can’t go wrong with any of them.”
Another great place for a treat, especially on a warmer day is The Creamery Marketplace , a marketplace located behind the intersection of Higuera and Nipomo streets. A best-kept local secret, the open-air market merges the Central Coast’s storied dairy history with a modern experience with several “diverse eateries, artisan handiwork, and a bustling culinary community – all hidden in plain sight” according to The Creamery.
12. Tour the SLO coast
Besides Morro Bay, SLO has its very own bay with equally great tours. SLO Tours offers boat adventures in the San Luis Obispo Bay to “explore Fossil Point Sea Caves, Otter Town, Pelican Jetty, Sea Lion Rock, Smith Island and views of Point San Luis Lighthouse in just one tour” says owner and captain Micheal Brink. The animal sightings and beautiful views make an excursion on the bay more than worthwhile, along with a great way to get familiar with the surrounding nature.
13. Experience the local art scene
SLO is also home to a vibrant art scene with a special local tradition that occurs on the first Friday of every month and spans across several neighborhoods in SLO. Art After Dark is a self-guided art walk where “the SLO community is welcome to enjoy visual, literary, and performing art at local businesses and galleries” according to SLO County Arts . Not only is this a unique opportunity to support local artists and businesses and get connected with the community, but what better way to get immersed in SLO culture than through art?
14. Go on a food tour
SLO has proven to be a hub for great food, but if you’re looking for a special foodie experience, add this culinary journey to your list. Taste of SLO – Walking Food Tour offers a one-of-a-kind experience that takes users through Downtown SLO streets to sample foods “from locally sourced artisanal cheeses to mouthwatering farm-to-table dishes” for the ultimate taste of SLO’s thriving food scene. This tour really is for everyone whether “you’re a seasoned foodie or just discovering your palate, our expert guides will lead you to hidden gems and iconic eateries that will leave you craving more” says Taste of SLO.
15. Hang out with animals
SLO is also close to animal sanctuaries like the Greener Pastures Farm Sanctuary in Arroyo Grande, which is just a short drive from Downtown SLO. This is the perfect activity for animal lovers of all ages as the farm has a variety of animals to meet from miniature donkeys to goats to sheep to geese to name a few. Since this is a sanctuary, Greener Pastures invites the public to “meet the rescued animals up close and hear their stories of triumph and forgiveness from docents who work with them weekly.” This experience is guaranteed to warm your heart with the cute animals and inspiring recovery stories.
Thinking about moving to the area?
16. mission san luis obispo de tolosa.
The ultimate SLO bucket list wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. As the first mission founded in the land of the Chumash Native Americans, this place is a special piece of SLO history. Michael of MK Library recommends grabbing a coffee or bite to eat downtown and taking a stroll along the San Luis Obispo Creek Trail. “There are plenty of spots to sit and enjoy a bit of greenery, with quick access to the local and very unique artistically boutique shops. If you time it right, you can experience the bells from Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa” says Michael. If you want to hear the bells ring up close, we recommend visiting the Mission’s garden for an up-close look at the beautiful architecture to really absorb SLO’s historic roots.

Slo cal blog, 12 iconic eats every visitor should try.
The best vacations leave a smile on your face and a good taste in your mouth. Smell the tri-tip sizzling and savor a hot bread bowl of clam chowder. With so many famous SLO CAL (San Luis Obispo County) foods to devour, put your diet aside. Make your Instagram followers drool with these iconic bites that taste as good as they appear (#nofilter). Looking for the best food in SLO CAL? Wondering where do the locals eat? Here's your must-munch meal plan of the most iconic SLO CAL eats every visitor should try:
Pink Champagne Cake
Santa maria style tri-tip, morro bay oysters, classic california clam chowder, endless deli sandwichs, legendary beef jerky, almond brittle & local produce, big, hot & juicy burgers, brown butter cookies, olallieberry pie, unusual pizza, sheep's milk ice cream, 1. madonna inn cake.
The Madonna Inn's classic Pink Champagne Cake might have been initially whipped up by angels—if angels lived in the Malibu Barbie Dream House. From the fluffy, cloud-like white cake to the scrumptious champagne filling to the undeniably eye-catching hot pink white chocolate curls on top, this famous slice of sugary sin must be on your radar. Of course, there are plenty of desserts to choose from in the Copper Cafe (cookies, black forest cake, carrot cake, plus a slew of pies), but if you want to really experience the Madonna Inn's mid-century hospitality in style, ya better think pink.
📍Madonna Inn Bakery: 100 Madonna Road, San Luis Obispo
2. Tri-Tip - A Cut Above the Rest
It's a cut of beef that plenty of well-meaning Americans may scratch their heads at. In fact, many folks across the globe have no idea that SLO CAL's classic Santa Maria style tri-tip (a triangular cut of beef from the bottom sirloin subprimal cut consisting of the tensor fasciae latae muscle) is the best cut of the entire cow. When seasoned and prepared just right, a SLO CAL tradition happens. Cut into this slab o' love and find tender, juicy beefiness marbled for your pleasure. Wondering where do the locals eat? Try it at Jocko's Steakhouse in Nipomo (a tri-tip stable since the 1940s) or, if in a rush, grab a tri-tip sando from where the locals eat: Firestone Grill , Old San Luis BBQ Co. or at The Ribline . Many other SLO CAL restaurants serve some variety on their menu, so be on the lookout wherever your adventure takes you.
📍Jacko's Steakhouse: 125 N Thompson Ave, Nipomo
📍Firestone Grill: 1001 Higuera Street, San Luis Obispo
📍Old Sand Luis BBQ: 670 Higuera Street, San Luis Obispo

3. Pacific Gold & Grassy Bar - Morro Bay Oysters
Did you know that oyster farming in Morro Bay has been a tradition since the 1930s? The calm, protected bay isn't just the perfect place to raise millions of oyster babies. The estuary's mix of salt and freshwater help bring out the unique terroir (or merroir, as the foodies call it) in these meaty mollusks. Head to the coast and see for yourself. Fresh shucked or with a squeeze of lemon, morsels raised by Morro Bay Oyster Company and Grassy Bar Oyster Company taste distinctly of the SLO CAL seascape. Find them at high-end restaurants across the US, but these taste especially best local. Check out restaurants, farmers markets or straight from the source along Morro Bay 's Embarcadero.
📍Morro Bay Oyster Company: 1287 Embarcadero, Morro Bay
📍Grassy Bar Oyster Co: 1215 Embarcadero Suite D, Morro Bay
4. Splash Cafe Clam Chowder
Pismo Beach is often called a “Classic California” beach town, and for good reason. With surfboards bobbing in the water, a bustling pier and mom and pop shops galore, this sunny untouched paradise feels plucked straight from a old California postcard. But if you traveled to Pismo Beach and didn't try Splash Cafe's rich clam chowder, you would miss out on the full SLO CAL experience. Of course, you can grab a bowl from a local grocery store's soup bar, but there's always something special about enjoying this steamy meal in its OG stomping grounds. Bikini or not, we recommend grabbing the bread bowl, which becomes even more delicious as the hot soup soaks into all that bubbly sourdough goodness. Super clam chowder tip: consider a cup and opt for the grilled sourdough slice.
📍Splash Cafe: 197 Pomeroy Avenue, Pismo Beach
5. Deli Subs in SLO
San Luis Obispo is known for deli culture. Maybe it's due to the college-aged, grab-and-go crowd, but check out a deli grinder (or sub) while you're here. The hard to deny High Street Deli is piled high with delectable goodness that is customizable, or select one of their top-selling subs. These sandwiches are some of the best food in SLO. This must-see spot has merchandise galore, and after 4:20pm, check out their half-off deal for the last hour they're open. Pro tip: call ahead or order online, the wait can really crowd up a sidewalk, but then again, does it matter when you're relaxin' on High Street? Plenty of other sandy snacks are available around town if you're not a wait-in-line type of person. Jaunt around town to sample more deli life, like the grungier Gus's Grocery , lettuce-piled Ben Franklin's , Hawaiian sweet rolled Kona's Sandwich or also in-demand Lincoln Market and Deli .
📍High Street: 350 High Street, San Luis Obispo
📍Gus's Grocery: 1638 Osos Street, San Luis Obispo
📍Ben Franklin's: 313 Higuera Street, San Luis Obispo
📍Kona's Deli: 977 Foothill Boulevard, San Luis Obispo

6. Cattaneo Brothers Jerky
SLO CAL residents will tell you, there is no better snack to munch on during a movie, ballgame or wine tasting excursion than Cattaneo Brothers jerky and sausage. This locally made, grass-fed beef jerky is legendary, available in flavors like sea salt, cracked black pepper, chipotle and cayenne. Yes, it's a whole lot different from what you might find at your average gas station pit-stop, and yes, you can visit their production facility, located just a few blocks from downtown San Luis Obispo . After you gnaw on these dried SLO CAL strips, any ole jerky simply will not do. So go ahead, spoil yourself with this addiction, we want you to come back for more!

7. Fruits and Nuts - Nature's Candy
SLO CAL has a bounty of harvest to enjoy. We know the beautiful terrain for wine now, but Paso Robles was once the almond capital of the world. Hearken the days with the delectable Paso Almonds . Available in brittle, corn or hots, you'll love this nutty delight any way it comes. Especially pair with the hots with jerky (above). Though, our favorite will always be the one that brought us to the dance—brittle. Never leave your sweet tooth unsatisfied with either candy sugar, or natural sugar. SLO CAL is home to the best strawberries you've ever tasted. Local Hayashi Vegetable Stand strawberries are also available during farmer's markets alongside many other vendors. We've got a bevy of these farm stands , and CSA boxes to reward yourself once you make yourself a SLO CAL local. That's right...you're getting weak. Give in to our sugar!
8. Best Burger Options
A burger is just a burger, right? Not in SLO CAL. Head to Sylvester's Burgers in Atascadero is famous for its “big, hot, 'n juicy” burgers, too. Grab a one pound behemoth in any style, including wild boar, elk, turkey, beef, or “hippie black bean.” Sylvesters also has locations in Los Osos and Oceano . San Luis Obispo 's The Brewery has taken many forms over the past few years since its current move out to The Rock. Try out their selection of top-notch burgers against a backdrop of another SLO CAL staple, mountains. Okay, this "rock" may not qualify as one of the Nine Sisters in the mountain range, but it does cast a shadow on you when you dine beneath. Other options to try is Linn's Hearst Beef burger (for the local, grass-fed fans) or Flavor Factory and Wee Shack in Morro Bay .
📍Sylvester's Burgers: 6544 El Camino Real, Atascadero
📍 1099 Santa Ynez Avenue, Los Osos
📍 1875 Front Street, Oceano

9. Brown Butter Cookie Co.
Love a salty yet sweet flavor combo? Check out Brown Butter Cookie Company in Cayucos , Paso Robles or San Luis Obispo . Wise locals know that you should save your pennies, because you'll always end up purchasing two bags at a time; one of the bags never makes it past the car ride home. While the original Brown Butter cookie is certainly a fan favorite, their other flavors like cocoa, almond and citrus (heck of all of them) are definitely worth giving a try.
📍Brown Butter Cookie Company: 98 N Oceano Avenue, Cayucos
📍 801 12th Street, Paso Robles
📍 897 Higuera Street, San Luis Obispo
10. Linn's Olallieberry Pie
Seasonal pies procured from Avila Valley Barn are just better (maybe it's the assortment of cute farm animals). Olallieberry filling is a fabulous regional treat, so although you might be tempted to go with a fruit you already know, we say throw caution to the wind, especially when ordering from the original Olallieberry enthusiasts, Linn's Fruit Bin in Cambria . Somewhere between blackberries and raspberries, seedy and tart with flavorful juice to spare, you may dribble down your shirt, but by golly—it will be worth it! Consider this the ultimate foodie souvenir.
📍Avila Valley Barn: 560 Avila Beach Drive, San Luis Obispo
📍 Linn's: 2277 Main Street, Cambria
11. Pizza by the Slice or Pie
Nardonne's Pizza in Baywood and Atascadero is a staple of family dinners, drive-in movies and little league games here in SLO CAL. Why? Well, when you bake copious amounts of toppings under (yes—under) oodles of bubbling cheese, dinner is served, sometimes for days. These delish pan pizzas are a lot to handle, so expect leftovers. Arroyo Grande is home to a hole in the wall joint that might not be friendly to those with peanut allergies. Klondike Pizza lets you walk over the peanut shells you enjoy while waiting in line for this in-demand Alaskan themed restaurant, complete with reindeer sausage on the menu. Their edgeless creations are agreeable for the whole family, but you might not want to tell the kids about the reindeer part during the month of December.
📍Nardonne's Pizzeria: 715 Santa Maria Avenue A, Baywood
📍8501 El Camino Real, Atascadero
📍Klondike Pizza: 104 Bridge Street, Arroyo Grande
12. Negranti Sheep's Milk Ice Cream
Looking for a unique sweet treat? This creamy and cold dessert is the perfect treat for an after-lunch stop or a mid-day pick-me-up! At Negranti Creamery in Paso Robles, Templeton and Atascadero you can try sheep’s milk ice cream- yes, ice cream made from sheep’s milk! This ice cream is just as tasty as your typical ice cream made from cow’s milk, but its more lactose-friendly. As one of the first ice cream companies in the country using sheep’s milk, Negranti is making sweet strides with its fresh, local ingredients and tasty flavors. Stop in to try a scoop, a milkshake, an ice cream sandwich, an affogato or more!
📍Negranti Creamery: 1211 Pine Street, Paso Robles
📍2989 Limestone Way, Paso Robles
📍6090 El Camino Real, Atascadero

Massive ranch is where the buffalo roam in slo county. but how did they get there.
The Camatta Ranch has been in the news with a landmark preservation deal announced with the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County.
With that deal, an area in eastern San Luis Obispo County nearly the size of San Francisco has been placed under a conservation easement.
If you have seen American bison grazing beside Highway 58 on the way to the Carrizo Plain then you are at the Camatta Ranch.
This story by Chuck Bolcom was published in the then Telegram-Tribune May 6, 1993. Unfortunately the original images from that story are lost in the files, but there are images from more recent times.
Where the buffalo roam
The image is so startling people pull off the road and stare.
They point.
They snap photos.
They can’t believe they’re seeing a herd of buffalo grazing on the green hills of San Luis Obispo County.
This is, after all, the Central Coast, not the great plains of South Dakota.
But if you head out on Highway 58, at the right time, you’ll see them yourself: 16 North American bison, munching on the green grass of the Camatta Ranch.
Some motorists are so shocked they don’t even bother to pull off the road.
“I’ve seen people park in the middle of the road and take a picture,” said ranch manager Mark Morrison.
Morrison acquired his first bison about six or seven years ago at the Templeton Livestock Market. A buffalo for sale is unusual and as soon as he saw the male yearling, Morrison knew he had to have him.
“I wanted that buffalo,” Morrison said. “It was something different, and you have to remember, this is a ranch.”
Not his ranch, mind you. His parents actually own the spread.
But with 32,000 acres, the family has a little more room for their animals than most.
Morrison stated the herd because he loves animals, all kinds of animals.
His wife, Felicia, says her husband comes home with new animals all the time.
“I’ve always said one of these days I’m going to put out a sign outside that says ‘Mark’s Ark,’” she said.
Through the years, Morrison has acquired aoudad (a North African sheep), Barbado sheep, Jacobson four-horn sheep, fallow deer, Ankole-Watusi cattle, snow geese, greater Canadian honker geese, several types of ducks, various hens and birds, horses, goats, a black swan and a water buffalo named Biff.
Biff has a problem. He still hasn’t figured out who he is.
When he runs around with horses, he thinks he’s a horse.
When he runs around with the sheep, he thinks he’s a sheep.
Most water buffalo like water. Not Biff — at least, not at first.
“I remember a couple of years ago it began raining and a lot of the animals ran into the shed,” Morrison said. “When I went to check on them, there’s Biff behind everybody else trying to keep dry.”
But Biff is still in one piece, which is more than can be said for Bent Horn.
She weighs 800 pounds and she has a bent horn from running after a horse and crashing into a fence post.
“She just doesn’t like horses,” he said. “She must have been really abused by someone on horseback because none of the other buffalo hate horses.”
The other bison have their quirks. Some are friendly. Some are shy.
“Some of them will check you out, at first,” Morrison said. “They’re just as curious about us as we are about them.”
Rank has its privileges in the buffalo world. The older, bigger buffalo eat when they want. The younger ones have to wait their turn.
And one bull is boss.
Morrison doesn’t have a name for him, but he’s the largest one in the herd. All he as to do is start walking toward the younger males and “they’ll start running,” Morrison said.
Buffalo are known to be temperamental. If someone starts running around, waving their arms and making a lot of noise, they will run, Morrison said.
And when that happens look out. Bison run like deer, he says; some can outrun horses.
Morrison developed his love of animals at a young age. His mother used to give tours at the Los Angeles Zoo and he often came along.
“It was kind of like my backyard,” he said. “I was fascinated with animals.”
When he wasn’t at the zoo, Morrison was often helping out his dad, a veterinarian who ran a 24-hour emergency animal clinic in Woodland Hills.
“People would hit a deer and bring it in saying, ‘Do whatever you have to do to save it,’” Morrison said. “So my dad would take care of it. Sometimes he would bring the animal home while it was mending.”
Morrison isn’t the only buffalo owner in the county, but he may have the largest herd.
“Every once in a while, you’ll see a buffalo in San Luis Obispo,” he said. “Actually it’s kind of sad because they’re usually in a small pen and they can’t run around.”
At the ranch, the buffalo have 300 acres to roam as they please. They don’t share their space with anyone.
Morrison keeps his animals apart for good reason. He also raises cattle on the ranch and if a cow were to meet up with a male bison.
Well … the two could produce a beefalo.
There is such an animal, Morrison said, but he’s never tried to create one because the cow might have trouble giving birth.
But some people do raise buffalo for their meat. Buffalo cuisine is a growing market. McLintocks Saloon and Dining House even serves a buffalo burger.
“It’s good,” Morrison said. “It’s really hard to tell the difference between a buffalo burger and a regular burger.”
Raising buffalo isn’t cheap. Although the herd is eating of the land right now, Morrison usually feeds his bison once a day with alfalfa and oat hay.
With some bison weighing up to two tons, the food bills alone are enormous.
How much? Morrison won’t say.
“That’s between me and my accountant,” he said.
Despite the cost, the family plans to keep building the herd. They’ve got the space and they’re offering ranch tours for anyone who wants a closer look at the buffalo.
Perhaps you don’t really care about the buffalo, but you would love to see the wildflowers or the fossils at the ranch. The family will arrange for a hike and picnic.
Maybe feeding the animals sounds more exciting. You can tag along for the early morning feeding and enjoy a breakfast afterward.
Maybe a drive at sunset suits your fancy.
The point is there’s plenty to do. The family only requests you call in advance and make a reservation.
Despite the cost, Morrison says he’ll keep building his herd.
He’s got the space. Buffalo cuisine could become the latest rage.
Besides, there’s nothing quite like owning your own herd.
“They’re just part of the family,” he said. “You raise a lot of animals and they grow on you. And then you want more and more.”
