Former cruise crew member sentenced to 30 years in prison for secretly filming children

A former Royal Caribbean International crew member was sentenced to 30 years in prison for filming guests with hidden cameras while they were naked, including young children.

Arvin Joseph Mirasol, 34, was sentenced Wednesday after he previously pleaded guilty to producing child pornography, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida said in a news release .

Mirasol was arrested on federal child pornography charges in March and charged with six counts of video voyeurism in Florida after a guest reported a hidden camera under the sink in their bathroom on the Symphony of the Seas ship. Mirasol, who is a citizen of the Philippines, worked on the vessel as a stateroom attendant.

Law enforcement found “numerous videos of children in various stages of undress” after searching Mirasol’s electronics, including one that showed him placing a camera in a passenger’s bathroom, prosecutors said. The children shown in the footage ranged from 2 to 17 years old.

“According to the agreed upon factual proffer, Mirasol had been placing cameras in passenger cabins since December of 2023,” the news release said. “Mirasol would enter the guests’ rooms while they were showering and hide under their beds so he could secretly record them exiting the shower.”

An attorney for Mirasol declined to comment on the sentencing. Royal Caribbean Group, the cruise line’s parent company, previously told USA TODAY that the company had “immediately” reported the crime to law enforcement and fired Mirasol.

“We have zero tolerance for this unacceptable behavior,” the company said in a statement following his arrest.

Mirasol is among a number of cruise line crew members arrested on pornography charges in recent months, including workers for Carnival Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line .

But Anthony Salisbury, special agent in charge at Homeland Security Investigations Miami, told USA TODAY in August that child exploitation is "significantly higher across the board," not only in the cruise industry.

"If it's up across the board, you're going to see it up across the cruise ships," he said.

PORT EVERGLADES, FLA. (WSVN) - A 34-year-old man was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to producing child pornography while working aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship , according to officials.

Arvin Joseph Mirasol, a stateroom attendant on the Symphony of the Seas, was sentenced in Miami federal court on Wednesday.

Mirasol, who is a citizen of the Philippines, was detained after a guest discovered a hidden camera in their bathroom on Feb. 25 and reported it to ship security, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a news release.

Authorities said that upon the ship’s arrival at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale on March 3, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents searched Mirasol’s electronics, uncovering numerous videos of children in various stages of undress. One video reportedly showed Mirasol installing a camera in a guest’s bathroom.

Investigators revealed that Mirasol had been secretly recording passengers, including children as young as 2 years old, since December 2023, the USDOJ said.

According to investigators, he would enter guests’ rooms while they were showering and hide under their beds to record them exiting the shower.

Jim cramer says he likes royal caribbean cruises ltd. (nyse:rcl): here’s why.

We recently published a list of  Jim Cramer’s Latest Lightning Round: Top 10 Stocks .  Since Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) ranks 7th on the list, it deserves a deeper look.

Jim Cramer in a latest program on CNBC said that the market has already priced in the expected positive comments from the Fed Chair Jerome Powell at the Jackson Hole event in Wyoming. Cramer said some bulls might be hoping for an indication of “multiple rate cuts,” but that’s “not gonna happen.”

Cramer talked about the latest 8-day winning streak of the market which he called a “resurrection.” He said that almost “anything” during these days went up. Even the companies with “bad” results went up because investors thought they would improve once the Fed begins to cut interest rates, Cramer said.

“But that was then, this is now. Since the winning streak ended we are starting to get into what I call the buyer’s remorse phase of this move. Stocks have had a nice run based on nothing more than hope are now rolling over hard.”

Jim Cramer also pointed to the possible events in the coming months that could keep the markets depressed:

“Maybe the Fed is already too late and the economy will get real ugly or maybe traders are beginning to fear the possibility of a democratic sweep in November which could lead to higher corporate tax rate, bad for earnings. And a potential witchhunt for price gouging in the aisles of the supermarket and the drug stores.”

For this article we picked 10 stocks Jim Cramer talked about during his latest programs on CNBC. With each company we have mentioned the number of hedge fund investors. Why are we interested in the stocks that hedge funds pile into? The reason is simple: our research has shown that we can outperform the market by imitating the top stock picks of the best hedge funds. Our quarterly newsletter’s strategy selects 14 small-cap and large-cap stocks every quarter and has returned 275% since May 2014, beating its benchmark by 150 percentage points  ( see more details here ).

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE: RCL )

Number of Hedge Fund Investors: 48

A caller recently asked Jim Cramer about his thoughts on Norwegian Cruise Lines. He instead recommended Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) as a better buy.

“I like Royal Caribbean Cruises because every time that stock is down there are like thousands of buyers come in, every time Norwegian is down, nobody cares.”

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) is benefitting from strong demand from younger customers as people around the world continue to spend on experiences despite inflation. Secular growth trends are expected to keep boosting the company.  The global cruise passenger numbers hit 31.7 million last year, a 7% increase over pre-pandemic levels. Projections suggest this figure could approach 40 million by 2027, highlighting the robust demand for cruise vacations.

Amid the after-effects of the pandemic, cruise companies have been reluctant when it comes to expansion of capacity and new orders. This resulted in a shortage of ships, which gives giants like Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) a space to raise prices. Royal Caribbean saw its net yield—revenue per passenger per cruise day—rise 13% in Q2 2024 year-over-year.

The company raised its full-year EPS guidance to $11.25-$11.45 per share, reflecting 68% year-over-year growth, surpassing the consensus of $11.07 per share. Additionally, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) reinstated its quarterly dividend at $0.40 per share, the first since its suspension in 2020.

Ariel Fund stated the following regarding Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE:RCL) in its  Q2 2024 investor letter:

“Global cruise vacation company,  Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.  (NYSE:RCL), advanced on another quarterly earnings beat and subsequent raise in full-year guidance. Stronger than anticipated consumer demand, healthy onboard spend, robust pricing and solid cost containment lifted recent results. Additionally, RCL is benefitting from several new megaships, more island destinations and re-entry into the China market. The resiliency of the core cruise consumer, in combination with management’s superior operational expertise and revised earnings outlook, lays the foundation for RCL to exceed its three-year strategic imperative, the Trifecta Program, a year earlier than expected.”

Overall, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) ranks 7th on Insider Monkey’s list titled  Jim Cramer’s Latest Lightning Round: Top 10 Stocks . While we acknowledge the potential of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL), our conviction lies in the belief that AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns, and doing so within a shorter timeframe. If you are looking for an AI stock that is more promising than RCL but that trades at less than 5 times its earnings, check out our report about the  cheapest AI stock .

Royal Caribbean Cruise Deals Guide

When it comes to planning the ultimate getaway, there are so many reasons why cruise vacations rank among the most popular travel options. First of all, they’re completely stress-free. On a cruise vacation, all the planning is taken care of by the cruise line — from the destinations you sail to and the shore excursions available at each port, to a full range of entertainment and activities happening onboard every day. If you’re not a planner, or if the only things you’re looking to focus on during your getaway is savoring great food, relaxing, and soaking up the sights, cruise vacations are the way to go. A cruise vacation is also a great option if you’re traveling with the whole family, especially when you opt for a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the ships in this cruise line’s fleet offer family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages. Even little ones will find plenty of ways to play with spaces and activities designed for tots to tweens. One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers. With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard. If you want to make your experience even more all-inclusive, you can opt for beverage and specialty dining packages that cover drinks and dinner at some of the most exclusive restaurants in the fleet. On top of all that, the cruise line presents frequent limited-time offers and seasonal sales, making it easy to score big savings when booking your vacation.

I’m ready to start planning my cruise — how can I score the best deals?

Whether you’re looking to book a short getaway or a longer adventure to far-flung destinations, Royal Caribbean makes it easy to save big on everything from your cruise fare to special experiences onboard and onshore. The first step to making sure you get the best deals is to join the cruise line’s email list. Once you’ve signed up, you’ll receive regular updates on all the latest offers, like deals by destination , kids sail free promotions and flash sales. The savings don’t end when you book your cruise, though. Once you’ve made a reservation, you’ll also receive notifications about special offers for onboard experiences — like discounts on beverage and specialty dining packages, shore excursions, spa services, and more via My Royal Cruise .

Does it pay to plan ahead, or should I wait until the last minute?

It’s an age-old question — does the early bird really get the worm, or are there perks to taking a “wait-and-see” approach? If you’re booking a cruise vacation, you’ll find there are benefits to both strategies. Planning ahead is a great way to score big savings , as Royal Caribbean often runs early saver deals to guests booking well in advance. It’s also pretty safe to assume prices usually go up as availability goes down the closer you get to your sail date, so booking ahead is a surefire way to lock in a great rate. That said, booking a cruise at the last minute can also yield some unexpected savings — but only if the itinerary you’re interested in hasn’t sold out yet.

If you can be flexible when it comes to your travel dates, you’ll have your pick of unbeatable savings. Popular vacation dates — like the holidays , spring break , summer vacation and week long cruises — sometimes see the highest prices (though you might get lucky with a seasonal sale). If you have the flexibility to travel during the shoulder season or off season, you’ll likely enjoy big savings on popular stateroom categories , like Balconies and even Suites. The deals don’t only apply to your cruise fare, though. Once you’ve booked your vacation, you could easily unlock discounts and specials on add-ons, including beverage and dining packages , Voom® high speed internet, shore excursions, and amazing experiences not included in your cruise fare — like a day of pampering at Vitality SM Spa, a behind-the-scenes tour of the ship’s galley followed by brunch, VIP seating at shows, and much more.

How can I maximize the value of my cruise vacation?

There are plenty of ways to get more bang for your buck when you sail on a Royal Caribbean cruise. Every ship in the fleet offers a range of delicious complimentary dining options , but you can dig into even more crave-worthy flavor by purchasing a Specialty Dining Package for less ahead of your cruise. Add a Specialty Beverage Package — which includes unlimited alcoholic beverages, soda, and more — and your experience is as close to all-inclusive as it gets. And with so many complimentary shows and attractions onboard, you can easily fill every sea day without spending a single dollar extra.

Royal Caribbean also offers deals based on departure ports  and destinations, so if you’re a flexible traveler looking for great savings, you can plan your next vacation around which itineraries are on sale. Just check your email or visit RoyalCaribbean.com/cruise-deals to stay up to date on promotions, sales and special offers. You can even browse sailings and deals by homeport, destination and season, so you can rest assured you’re getting the best possible deal no matter when or where in the world you choose to set sai.

Should I book my flight through my cruise line?

Erica Silverstein

Editor's Note

If you choose a cruise deal with airfare included or book an air-cruise package, your cruise purchase can really be one-stop shopping. You always get transportation, food and lodging all at one price with a cruise; so if you also book your airfare through your cruise line, you'll take care of the majority of your travel plans in one transaction.

Should you book your flights through your cruise line, though? Doing so can offer various benefits, but you will want to consider whether the pros outweigh any cons. The answer will depend on your particular travel situation. It'll also depend on whether you're contemplating a cruise with flights included in the deal or simply paying for flights through your cruise line.

Learn more about the benefits and drawbacks of cruise and flight packages to determine whether it's a smart move to book your flights via your cruise line.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

5 reasons why you should book your flight through your cruise line

The airfare can be a good deal.

Some high-end cruise lines include flights as a booking perk. Oceania Cruises offers economy airfare with its Simply More program, while Regent Seven Seas Cruises lures travelers with free business-class flights to Europe. It's hard to find a better deal than free, even if you might not have as much control over your booking as you'd like.

Even cruise lines selling flights claim to have low rates. Royal Caribbean claims that its airfares are so competitive that it will refund you 110% of the difference in onboard credit if you can find a cheaper flight. It makes sense that cruise lines' in-house travel agencies can get access to the lowest rates or bulk fares not available to the general public.

You'll still earn points and miles

Buying a cruise line air package is similar to purchasing flights through a travel agent. You can add your frequent flyer number to the reservation to earn miles and access your elite perks — but watch out for extremely discounted fares that might not qualify. Plus, if you pay with a rewards-earning credit card, you'll also get points or miles for your purchase.

TPG pro tip: Look for credit cards that earn extra points on travel purchases , so your cruise-and-flight purchase can earn you free travel faster. Among our top-rated credit cards for travel are the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card (see rates and fees ), which gives you 3 points per dollar spent on air travel purchases; the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , which gives you 2 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on travel purchases; and the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , which offers 3 points per dollar on travel.

The cruise line will assist you with travel disruptions

The cruise line's travel department has the backs of all cruisers who purchased flights through them. If your flight is delayed due to weather or a mechanical problem, agents will assist you with rebooking. Should the flight issues make you miss your ship, the line will make arrangements to get you to the next port of call.

The same is true if your cruise ends unexpectedly early due to weather, mechanical issues or an illness outbreak. The cruise line's air department will rebook cruise passengers who booked their flights through the cruise line. Independent travelers will be left to fend for themselves.

You can book now and pay later

Are you a planner and book your cruise a year in advance? Some airlines still impose change fees, so you might not want to pay for airfare months in advance, in case your plans change. Some cruise lines' air-cruise packages — such as Carnival Cruise Line 's Fly2Fun Air Program and Holland America 's Flight Ease — allow you to pay for your flights when your final cruise payment is due (typically about 90 days prior to sailing) rather than at the time of booking if you choose a "flexible fares" option.

Cruise lines don't charge booking fees

Cruise lines will not charge you service or convenience fees to book your flights through their air departments. You only have to pay the airfare and the applicable airline taxes and fees.

5 reasons not to book your flight through your cruise line

You can't pay with miles.

If you'd love to book your flights with credit card points or airline miles, you'll need to do that through the airline, not the cruise line.

You might also want to watch out if you hope to pay for economy airfare through your cruise line and then upgrade with miles. As cruise lines often negotiate special low rates with the airlines, these fare classes are often ineligible for mileage or elite upgrades.

Cruise lines charge deviation fees for custom itineraries

Some cruise line air bookings come with restrictions around when you can fly. Should you wish to arrive several days early or spend a week in the area after your cruise, perhaps even flying home from a nearby city, you might need to pay the cruise line a deviation fee.

A deviation fee lets you choose your airline and flights prior to making your final payment. The nonrefundable fee can cost anywhere from $50 to a few hundred dollars (per passenger).

Related: 11 extra charges on cruise ships that will drive you nuts — and what you can do about them

You can't always pick your airline, schedule or flight routing

Many cruise lines now offer choice and flexibility with airline arrangements, letting you pick your airline, travel time and routing. However, some cheaper, more restrictive options leave the booking exclusively to the cruise line's air department. This gives you no say in your flight route — unless you pay the aforementioned deviation fee or pay more for a flexible booking option.

For example, with Viking , you'd need to upgrade from its base Inclusive Air option to the pricier Viking Air Plus fares in order to choose your specific flights through Viking Air.

Free airfare isn't free

Remember that free airfare perk? It's not actually free. The cruise lines increase the base cruise fare to cover the extra perks. Decline the airfare, and they will reimburse you with an air credit or charge you a cruise-only rate. If you can find fares cheaper than the credit, you'll save money by not booking your flights through your cruise line.

This advice especially applies to travelers flying from smaller airports that aren't among the major ones covered by the free airfare deal. Most cruise line airfare fine print states that passengers flying out of other airports will pay an additional fee. If you can book flights that are cheaper than the fee plus the air credit, you should do that and skip the not-actually-free airfare.

The cruise lines can charge service fees for changes

Cruise lines can add their own fees and surcharges on top of the typical airline charges. Some lines, such as Carnival, charge a flat fee for flight changes in addition to the fees and fines imposed by airlines. If saving money is the most important consideration, you might want to book independently to avoid any extra surcharges.

Can you use points to upgrade when you book air through your cruise airline?

Maybe — it will likely depend on which cruise line you book with.

For instance, you can use frequent flyer miles to upgrade your seat from bookings through Royal Caribbean's Air2Sea program. However, the line cautions that its airline partners determine the flight categories that qualify for mileage upgrades and warns that you must "contact your preferred carrier for the specific flight category information prior to confirming your reservation with us."

Additionally, Viking passengers who book through Viking Air can contact the airline after their flights have been ticketed to see if they are able to upgrade with miles. While Viking can't guarantee your success, many guests "were able to do so previously," according to a Viking representative.

Bottom line

Sometimes booking your cruise with airfare included makes sense. It's convenient and essentially takes care of most of your travel plans with one transaction.

While one-stop shopping is attractive, you should weigh the pros and cons of booking your flights through your cruise line. Once you do, you can determine whether it's best to let your cruise line do the legwork or make your own flight arrangements for your cruise vacation.

Why you should book a Royal Caribbean Fly Cruise in 2024

The difference between booking a Royal Caribbean fly cruise package holiday and a cruise only holiday is that you can experience more than just the cruise itself. Even though your cruise itinerary is full of amazing destinations, why not extend your time away and design yourself the holiday of a lifetime to explore countries and discover once-in-a-lifetime experiences?

Pre-cruise: Fly to your destination a few days early and relax in stunning, luxurious hotels before preparing to board your cruise ship. In the meantime, why not book an excursion or do some sight-seeing? The choice is yours.

During the cruise: Our cruise concierge can recommend some amazing shore excursions and activities that you can pre-book so you can make the most of each destination you visit while on the cruise.

Post-cruise: This is ideal if your cruise itinerary ends at a different port and destination from where you originally departed. Pre-book your post cruise hotel and finish your holiday the way you began. Relax and take in the sights for a few days before you return home.

Transfers: Don’t worry about how you will get to the hotel, the cruise ship, or the airport . We’ve got this covered. Our Cruise118.com concierge will take care of everything for you, so you can sit back and just enjoy every second of your Royal Caribbean cruise holiday.
