Corsair Flash Voyager GTX USB Flash Drive Review

flash voyager gtx

Corsair has recently released the Flash Voyager GTX flash drive, which is optimized for speed and hailed as their fastest USB drive yet (with reported transfer speeds approaching 450MB/s read and 350MB/s write). Corsair designed this flash drive for professionals in mind, but casual users too can revel in the high-speed transfer of large data collections like operating system images, game installs, video and music production projects, and large media libraries.

flash voyager gtx

The Flash Voyager GTX makes use of SSD technologies like TRIM support to provide enhanced flash drive durability and ensure that users can continue writing to it for years despite heavy use. Voyager GTX is backed by a five-year warranty and carries a price of $119.99 and $239.99 for the 128GB and 256GB model, respectively. Our review is of the 128GB capacity.

Specifications

  • 450MB/s and 430MB/s (ATTO and CDM, respectively)
  • 350MB/s and 190MB/s (ATTO and CDM, respectively)
  • Random 4K: 30kIOPS (read) and 5kIOPS (write)
  • Operating System: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X
  • Compatibility: USB 3.0
  • Weight: 0.03kg
  • Warranty: 5 years

Design and Build

The Flash Voyager GTX has a standard capped USB drive design and is mostly black with red trimming and white branding in an aluminum chassis. It is wider than some other compact flash drives due to its 8 channel design (which is used to optimize speed).

The rear of the device has a rectangular recess that can be used to connect the flash drive to a keychain, but it is also formed so that the cap can be stored there during use (it just snaps on and off).

Performance

In this review, we include the following comparables from our database of recent USB flash drive reviews:

  • Patriot Supersonic Magnum USB Flash Drive – 256GB
  • SanDisk Extreme PRO USB 3.0 Flash Drive – 128GB
  • Lexar JumpDrive P10 – 64GB
  • Toshiba TransMemory Pro USB 3.0 Flash Drive – 128GB

Using our HP Z620 Workstation Testing Platform running Windows 8.1, we measured transfer speeds from the Corsair Flash Voyager GTX with IOMeter. Its sequential transfer speeds were measured to be 286.5MB/s and 63.47MB/s for read and write, respectively. It was the top performer in read activity, the next closest being the Patriot Supersonic Magnum which measured 275.8MB/s read and 149.3MB/s write. The SanDisk Extreme PRO was the top writing performer with 233.1MB/s read and 172.4MB/s write. The Toshiba TransMemory measured 216.1MB/s read and 123.3MB/s write while the Lexar JumpDrive P10 measured 220.7MB/s read and 133.2MB/s write.

When we switched to random large-block transfers the Flash Voyager GTX dominated in read performance with 282.9MB/s and was the second fastest in terms of write activity with 57.5MB/s, beaten out only by the SanDisk Extreme PRO which got 200.1MB/s read and 65.1MB/s write. The Toshiba TransMemory Pro was the slowest flash drive in read activity with 146.8MB/s and the second slowest in terms of write activity with 3.24MB/s. The Patriot Supersonic Magnum was the second-fastest flash drive in terms of read activity with 246.9MB/s but the slowest in terms of write activity with 1.76MB/s. The Lexar JumpDrive P10 was in the middle of the pack in both read and write, with 213.5MB/s and 11.9MB/s, respectively.

In our last flash drive benchmark which measures 4K random transfer performance in IOPS, the Flash Voyager GTX was the top performer in both read and write by far, achieving 6,711.4IOPS and 1,784.1IOPS, respectively. The next closest flash drive in read activity was the Lexar JumpDrive P10 with 4,645.8IOPS (30% slower than the Flash Voyager GTX) and the next closest in write activity was the SanDisk Extreme PRO with 479.9IOPS (75% slower than the Flash Voyager GTX). The Toshiba TransMemory PRO, SanDisk Extreme Pro and Patriot Supersonic Magnum scored 275.5IOPS, 1,493.4IOPS, and 2,013.8IOPS, respectively, in read operations. The Toshiba TransMemory PRO, Patriot Supersonic Magnum, and Lexar JumpDrive P10 showed write speeds of 5.02IOPS, 0.949IOPS, and 6.67IOPS, respectively.

The Flash Voyager GTX, Corsair's newest and fastest USB 3.0 flash drive to date, could satisfy the needs of just about anyone transferring of large data files like operating system images, games, and large media libraries; though clearly the performance of the drive slants more toward professionals. It is available in capacities of 128GB and 256GB carries a five year warranty.

flash voyager gtx

Although its performance in our benchmarks fell short of Corsair's reported 450MB/s read and 350MB/s write, the Flash Voyager GTX still proved to be a very fast flash drive among the market's other top-end products. The Voyager GTX almost always found itself in the top two for read and write, usually battling with either the Patriot Supersonic Magnum or the SanDisk Extreme PRO. The Flash Voyager GTX was the top performer in sequential read, random read, and random 4K read and write.

  • Excellent random 4k speeds
  • Less expensive than many competing top-tier flash drives
  • Big 256GB capacity
  • Somewhat slow random write speed
  • Wide design that doesn't fit in some USB ports

The Bottom Line

The Corsair Flash Voyager held its own against other top-spec flash drives and would be an excellent, lower-cost alternative for professionals and those who want high-speed access on the go to large sets of data.

Corsair Flash Voyager GTX 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Review

Tyler tests the new flash voyager gtx pen drive from corsair. it even includes trim and smart support since internally it uses an ssd controller. read on..

Tyler Bernath

It has been a few months since we have had any new storage solutions come through the lab here at TweakTown from Corsair. However, today that streak comes to an end, as the new Flash Voyager GTX comes to market.

The latest flash solution from Corsair is available in both 128GB and 256GB capacities. Marketing dictates performance of 450 MB/s read and 360 MB/s write depending on the benchmark used, while compatibility ranges from modern Windows operating systems to OS X and Linux. A unique feature of the new Flash Voyager GTX is the device supports TRIM and SMART commands due to its internal SSD controller.

MSRP of the Flash Voyager GTX in the 128GB flavour is listed at $129.99 with a five-year warranty.

In the previous image, we have our first set of tests with IOMeter. The Voyager GTX came in at 413 MB/s read and 192 MB/s write.

Corsair Flash Voyager GTX 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Review 12

Next up we move to 4K with a QD of 8. As you can see above, the GTX did quite well pushing 27608 read IOPS and 7046 write IOPS.

Corsair Flash Voyager GTX 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Review 13

Price/Performance again has us changing out the top spot. As you can see thanks to the great performance of the drive and excellent MSRP of $1.02 per GB, the Flash Voyager GTX takes top spot.

The Flash Voyager GTX is certainly among the top USB flash drives on the market today. While it isn't the quickest, as that honor goes to the Ventura Ultra from Mushkin, this drive is right there with it. Build quality seems to be top notch; the aluminium exterior holds internal components tight via plastic end caps, and the cap itself when placed on the drive is held tight as well.

Performance of the Flash Voyager GTX is quite good. As you could see in our testing with IOMeter, we were able to touch 413MB/s read and 192 MB/s write. On the other hand, we also found the Voyager GTX to take the top spot in price/performance.

MSRP for the Flash Voyager GTX in the 128GB capacity is set at $129.99 with a five-year warranty. Current market pricing can be found below.

Corsair’s Flash Voyager GTX is basically a full SSD disguised as a pocketable flash drive

Forget the pokey transfer speeds and rinky-dink storage capacities of yesteryear’s flash drives. Corsairs mashing up SSDs with USB at Computex, with the announcement of the Corsair Flash Voyager GTX USB Flash Drive—a flash drive that is, for all intents and purposes, a modern SSD in an ultra-portable flash drive package.

Corsair says the Flash Voyager GTX offers 450MB/sec read and 350MB/sec write times on paper, putting it nearly on with the SSDs found in proper computers  if reality matches those on-paper specs. The tech inside the drive mirrors SSDs as well, with support for TRIM, which improves performance over time by telling the drive when blocks of data can be erased or consolidated, along with USB Attached SCSI and SMART monitoring technology to keep an eye on the storage’s health.

The resemblance carries over to the sheer size of the flash drive: 128GB and 256GB versions are planned for $120 and $200, respectively. (Yeah, that’s an SSD-style price, too.) With a flash drive that large and that speedy, this thing seems ideal for carrying full operating systems and gigabyte-gobbling PC games around in your pocket, or simply boosting the storage capabilities of your current PC without having to plop a bulky external drive on your desk.

As you’d expect, Corsair’s Flash Voyager GTX supports USB 3.0 and 2.0, and plays fine with Windows, Linux, and OS X alike. It’ll hit the streets in July with a five-year warranty.

Corsair Flash Voyager GS USB 3.0 512GB Flash Drive Capsule Review

  • Flash Drive

flash voyager gtx

The ubiquity of USB 3.0 as a high speed interface for PCs and the increasing affordability of flash memory has led to some very interesting products. USB flash drives are a dime a dozen, but there is scope for manufacturers to differentiate themselves. High-performance flash drives have traditionally employed a SATA SSD controller behind a USB 3.0 - SATA bridge. However, this increases the drive cost in what is essentially a price-sensitive market. Controller vendors have recently started to introduce native high-performance USB 3.0 flash controllers. Today, we look at two products from the Corsair stable - the Flash Voyager GTX and the Flash Voyager GS. While the GTX is the high performance play (topping out at 256GB), the GS is more of a capacity play (the top end version has 512GB of flash memory).

Corsair is one of the very few vendors to have a 512GB thumb drive in their product portfolio. In fact, the only other vendor with a 512GB flash drive is Kingston (I am not considering SSDs in an external enclosure like the Samsung Portable T1). This makes the Flash Voyager GS one of the unique products in the market right now. Users looking at the currently available Flash Voyager GTX will find that the same casing is used for the Flash Voyager GS also. The Flash Voyager GTX 256GB was one of the earliest flash drives that we evaluated with the new methodology. Since then, Corsair has changed the casing while retaining the same internals and model name / number. In addition to evaluating the performance of the Voyager GS, we will also be looking at the new Voyager GTX (referred to as Voyager GTX v2 hereon).

Hardware Design and Internals

The housings of both the Corsair Flash Voyager GS and GTX are made of a zinc alloy with aluminium accents. There is a small loop at one end for attaching to a keyring. An activity LED is also near the loop. While the previous generation Corsair Voyager GTX's external design was not as stylish, it at least allowed the protective cap to be securely placed at the other end during active usage. This is not possible in the current housing design. The photographs below show the Corsair Voyager GS and GTX v2 as well as the the old and new Voyager GTX versions side by side.

flash voyager gtx

We already know from our previous review that the Voyager GTX comes with the Phison S9 SSD controller behind a USB 3.0 - SATA bridge. The Voyager GS is a native USB 3.0 flash drive, and the internals (Phison PS2251-01 with Toshiba MLC flash) could be determined without looking at the unit.

Testbed Setup and Testing Methodology

Evaluation of DAS units on Windows is done with the testbed outlined in the table below. For devices with USB 3.0 connections (such as the Corsair Voyager GS and GTX that we are considering today), we utilize the USB 3.0 port directly hanging off the PCH.

The full details of the reasoning behind choosing the above build components can be found here . The list of DAS units used for comparison purposes is provided below.

  • Corsair Voyager GS 512GB
  • Corsair Voyager GTX v2 256GB
  • Corsair Voyager GTX 256GB
  • LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt 500GB
  • Patriot Supersonic Rage 2 256GB
  • VisionTek Pocket SSD 240GB

Synthetic Benchmarks - ATTO and Crystal DiskMark

Corsair claims read and write speeds of around 290 MBps for the Voyager GS. ATTO reports only around 160 MBps for writes and 270 MBps for reads with our standard test settings. For the GTX v2, the results are in the same ballpark as that of the original GTX (around 375 MBps writes and 460 MBps reads).

Corsair Voyager GS 512GB Corsair Voyager GTX v2 256GB Corsair Voyager GTX 256GB LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt 500GB Patriot Supersonic Rage 2 256GB VisionTek Pocket SSD 240GB

flash voyager gtx

CrystalDiskMark, despite being a canned benchmark, provides a better estimate of the performance range with a selected set of numbers. These numbers seem to back up Corsair's performance claims. As evident from the screenshot below, the performance can dip to as low as 0.8 MBps for 4K random accesses at low queue depths for the Voyager GS. For the GTX v2 / GTX, these tests show around 400 MBps reads and 180 MBps writes - the two versions don't differ much in the artificial benchmarks, as expected.

flash voyager gtx

Benchmarks - robocopy and PCMark 8 Storage Bench

Our testing methodology for DAS units also takes into consideration the usual use-case for such devices. The most common usage scenario is transfer of large amounts of photos and videos to and from the unit. The minor usage scenario is importing files directly off the DAS into a multimedia editing program such as Adobe Photoshop.

In order to tackle the first use-case, we created three test folders with the following characteristics:

  • Photos: 15.6 GB collection of 4320 photos (RAW as well as JPEGs) in 61 sub-folders
  • Videos: 16.1 GB collection of 244 videos (MP4 as well as MOVs) in 6 sub-folders
  • BR: 10.7 GB Blu-ray folder structure of the IDT Benchmark Blu-ray (the same that we use in our robocopy tests for NAS systems)

robocopy - Photos Read

For the second use-case, we take advantage of PC Mark 8's storage bench. The storage workload involves games as well as multimedia editing applications. The command line version allows us to cherry-pick storage traces to run on a target drive. We chose the following traces.

  • Adobe Photoshop (Light)
  • Adobe Photoshop (Heavy)
  • Adobe After Effects
  • Adobe Illustrator

Usually, PC Mark 8 reports time to complete the trace, but the detailed log report has the read and write bandwidth figures which we present in our performance graphs. Note that the bandwidth number reported in the results don't involve idle time compression. Results might appear low, but that is part of the workload characteristic. Note that the same testbed is being used for all DAS units. Therefore, comparing the numbers for each trace should be possible across different DAS units.

robocopy - Photoshop Light Read

Performance Consistency

Yet another interesting aspect of these types of units is performance consistency. Aspects that may influence this include thermal throttling and firmware caps on access rates to avoid overheating or other similar scenarios. This aspect is an important one, as the last thing that users want to see when copying over, say, 100 GB of data to the flash drive, is the transfer rate going to USB 2.0 speeds. In order to identify whether the drive under test suffers from this problem, we instrumented our robocopy DAS benchmark suite to record the flash drive's read and write transfer rates while the robocopy process took place in the background. For supported drives, we also recorded the internal temperature of the drive during the process. The graphs below show the speeds observed during our real-world DAS suite processing. The first three sets of writes and reads correspond to the photos suite. A small gap (for the transfer of the videos suite from the primary drive to the RAM drive) is followed by three sets for the next data set. Another small RAM-drive transfer gap is followed by three sets for the Blu-ray folder.

An important point to note here is that each of the first three blue and green areas correspond to 15.6 GB of writes and reads respectively. Throttling, if any, is apparent within the processing of the photos suite itself. The Corsair Voyager GS and the new GTX don't suffer from any such issues.

flash voyager gtx

The surprising results in the above graphs involve the GTX v2 and GTX. While the original GTX took around 1900s to finish the benchmark, the GTX v2 took around 2200s. The reason behind this is evident in the robocopy benchmarks also - the write speeds of the new GTX seem to be a tad lower compared to the original GTX even though CrystalDiskMark and ATTO seem to indicate that both should have comparable performance. Corsair assured us that nothing had changed internally, but we did see that our original results were with firmware version S9FM01.7, while the GTX v2 came with S9FM02B1. Corsair indicated that S9FM02B1 is the best firmware to use for both the GTX and GTXv2.

Concluding Remarks

Coming to the business end of the review, the Corsair Voyager GS continues Corsair's leadership in the USB flash drive area. With a 512GB capacity, the Voyager GS is one of only two high capacity thumb drives available in the market. We have already talked about the GTX, and, as mentioned before, the availability of a real SSD controller in the form of the Phison S9 makes it one of the drives we would recommend for portable OS installations.

The Corsair Voyager GS doesn't support TRIM or any SMART commands. The Voyager GTX, on the other hand, supports both. Corsair's SSD Toolbox removed support for the Voyager GTX sometime last year. However, with 1.2.3.5 (released last week), support for the thumb drive is back. The SSD toolbox allows setting of software overprovisioning on the drive, something important to ensure performance consistency when used as a portable OS drive.

Price per GB

In terms of pricing, the Voyager GS 512GB retails for $315 , while the GTX v2 256GB comes in at $185 . These come in the middle of the pack in the price per GB graph above. As discussed earlier in this section, the GS and GTX v2 have different claims to uniqueness as justification for the slight pricing premium.
