What an amazing experience onboard the Navigator for a Doubtful Sound overnight cruise. Thanks so much!!The best boat trip I’ve ever taken! Thanks also for giving us glorious sunshine and the atmospheric clouds the next day 😉 The views, the staff, the food and the comfort were all outstanding. We got the luxury of exploring the sound by kayak, and experiencing an amazing sunset over the Tasman. Shout out to Brock for his amazing insight and commentary. Lauracmilner83, Via TripAdvisor
This was a fantastic highlight of our south island tour. After a very enjoyable boat ride across the lake, we boarded one of 2 coaches taking us over the pass to the mooring of the Fjordland Navigator. A great crew on board, enthusiastic and very informative about the background and flora/forna of the sound. We saw dolphins and shearwaters at close quarters. The food was excellent, our cabin was comfortable and the whole experience was unforgettable. The highlight was probably the sound of silence, where the engines and generator were stopped, so you could hear nothing but the birds and the breeze! Awesome. martinlL633EU, Via TripAdvisor
What a wonderful trip, I'm SO glad we decided to take an extra day to do the overnight. The whole area was stunningly beautiful (I actually liked it better than Milford). The transition from boat to bus to ship was seamless, and everyone involved was friendly and knowledgeable. The ship was great, our room (a double) was cozy and the bed was really comfortable. The food was excellent and they had a bar for drinks. It was one of our favorite experiences in a month-long trip and we would definitely recommend it!
Wonderful experience aboard the overnight vessel. The extra time is really the best way to take in how amazing and vast Doubtful Sound is. Great good, super nice accommodation & communal areas and a wonderful & informative nature guide in Brock! Thanks RealNZ for an amazing experience.

A double room is a private room for two people, with one bed to share. A twin room is a private room for two people, with two single beds.

Overnight Cruises and Quadshare - We are a group of three people and would like to book a shared quad-share room. Will this mean we would be sharing with another person?

What is the difference between Milford and Doubtful Sounds?

doubtful sound overnight cruise prices

Our places. Our experiences. Milford and Doubtful Sounds, NZ.

Milford Sound at the mountainous north end of Fiordland National Park is the classic fiord - a deep water inlet between steep sided high mountains.  Milford Sound is a middle-sized fiord at around 13 kms in length and it is famous for its dramatic scenery, especially Mitre Peak.  This fiord is the most accessible of Fiordland National Park’s 14 fiords and it can be reached by bus, car or flight connections from Queenstown.

Doubtful Sound is located in the heart of Fiordland National Park where the mountains are still very impressive but not as high as Milford Sound.  Doubtful Sound is three times longer and  has a sea surface area roughly ten times larger than Milford Sound.  Its three arms are Hall, Crooked and First Arm.  It is famous for its wilderness scenery and wildlife sightings.  To get to Doubtful Sound visitors first take a launch trip across Lake Manapouri and drive over Wilmot Pass.

Visitors with enough time choose to visit both fiords as they have different characters.

What weather can I expect in Fiordland?

Fiordland’s weather is what gives the region its unique character. Rainfall is what makes Fiordland a land of lakes, rivers, streams, waterfalls and fiords. Visitors should always be prepared to enjoy some rainfall during their stay. It is recommended to bring sensible clothing for cool and wet weather to fully appreciate your stay.

The temperatures you can expect in the different seasons are as follows:

  • Summer  (December-February) 19-23 Celsius / 66 - 73 Fahrenheit
  • Autumn  (March-May) 8-18 Celsius / 46  - 64 Fahrenheit
  • Winter  (June-August) 5-9 Celsius /  41  - 48 Fahrenheit
  • Spring  (September-November) 10-19 Celsius  / 50   - 66 Fahrenheit

Is it worth going to Milford/Doubtful Sounds on a wet day?

Many say you have not seen Fiordland unless you have seen it in the rain.  When it rains in Fiordland the landscape is dramatic - rock faces stream with waterfalls, mist hangs around the tops of the mountains and rivers and streams rage.  From a dry comfortable vantage point on the bus or boat, this landscape is spectacular for sightseeing.

How much luggage can I take on my overnight cruise?

We recommend each passenger brings no more than a carry-on sized bag due to space restrictions in the cabins. For a list of what to bring please see the 'more info' section or your booking confirmation.

While we cannot guarantee you will see wildlife, sightings of fur seals are reasonably common in both Doubtful and Milford Sounds.  A pod of bottlenose dolphins resides in Doubtful Sound so you have a good chance of seeing these fascinating mammals, and in Milford Sound dolphins are occasional visitors.  In both sounds the rare Fiordland crested penguin can at times be observed.

Throughout Fiordland the fiords are officially mapped as sounds.  Strictly speaking, they should be called fiords.

A fiord is a glaciated valley - typically narrow and steep-sided - that has been flooded by the sea after the glacier’s retreat.  A sound, on the other hand, is a river valley flooded by the sea following a rise in sea levels or depression of the land, or a combination of both.

Is the Manapouri Underground Power Station accessible?

The Manapouri Underground Power Station visit is CLOSED indefinitely due to maintenance by operators Meridian Energy. We are not permitted to access the Power Station for tours during this time. The Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise tour will still operate without the visit underground to the Powerstation.

Online transactions/prices are conducted in what currency?

All prices and transactions on the RealNZ website are in New Zealand dollars (NZD).  This is specified on the Terms & Conditions page.

What happens if there is an emergency?

Our staff are trained to deal with incidents and in case of an emergency you should listen to their instructions. We have a portable defibrillator on each of our overnight cruise vessels (Milford Mariner, Milford Wanderer and Fiordland Navigator). In addition to this we also have portable defibrillators at the following locations: •    Milford Sound Visitor Terminal •    RealNZ Visitor Centre, Manapouri •    Cavern House (Te Anau Glowworm Caves) •    Colonel’s Homestead Restaurant, Walter Peak •    TSS Earnslaw Vintage Steamship •    Stewart Island Ferry (Bluff - Oban - Bluff)

Can my dietary requirements be accommodated?

Yes, dietary requirements can be catered for. Please provide detailed information regarding your dietary requirements when making a booking.

Will I be sharing a quad room?

There is a possibility that you might share a quad room with other customers, and it’s important to note these rooms are equipped with a curtain partition instead of a door. Please be aware of this configuration when booking and please contact us if you need further clarification.

Is the boat accessible for individuals with impaired mobility?

When we are informed in advance about guests with hindered mobility, we make every effort to mitigate the impact by assigning rooms in proximity to the main areas. However, it’s important to note that our vessels are not optimally equipped for potential needs. While we extend a warm welcome to individuals with impaired mobility, all our vessel’s doorways feature a sea sill, there are no ramps within the boat, and a flight of stairs separates rooms from the main saloon.

What is the best room type for families or children on an overnight cruise?

Our t win sleeping compartments provide the best privacy for travelling with your family and children. A twin room is a private room for two people with two single beds.

What happens if my travel is disrupted by COVID-19?

If your travel plans are disrupted by COVID-19, our standard cancellation policy applies. This includes flexible cancellation options designed to accommodate unexpected changes. To ensure you are fully covered for any unforeseen circumstances, we strongly encourage you to obtain travel insurance. Travel insurance can help cover any costs incurred from having to cancel or reschedule your trip due to COVID-19, giving you peace of mind.

What our guests say.

We had the most AMAZING time on our overnight cruise on Southern Secret. The transfers with Nadine were wonderful (great combination of personality, warmth, knowledge, smile) and the information and commentary provided by Clint in his own inimitable, Kiwi way, was just wonderful. We loved spending a night on the boat, hosted by Clint and Jenny. We marvelled at Jenny’s competence, and Clint’s competence and ease with both his boat, and the passengers walking all over it. The boat cruise epitomised everything that is great about New Zealand. Nothing was a problem to either Clint or Jenny. The cabins were comfortable, the food was superb, the fishing was fantastic. There was nothing not to like. Yes, it rained, but it’s Doubtful Sound, after all, and so all is forgiven, rain wise, when you have an experience like that, in a place like that. I would recommend this trip to everyone: nobody should have any hesitations at all about this cruise. All in all, a perfect getaway for us, provided by an outstanding company and its people. Thank you.

Could be the best thing we did while in New Zealand. This experience is so unique and provides a much more intimate experience vs a crowded day tour. We saw tons of dolphin, caught fish we ate that night, prepared by the best chef it was so delicious. So many waterfalls. Kayaking as well. Just unbelievable. The boat was so comfortable for the amount of people. I sometimes get seasick and the water was so calm you sometimes forgot you were on a boat. You really have to make this part of your trip while in NZ. Thank you to the crew for everything!

Southern Secret is a wonderful way to see the fabulous scenery and miss the crowds. In addition you get a ride over Lake Manapouri one of NZ’s largest and most stunning lakes. Everything is managed with efficiency and care from start to finish. We were looked after by skipper Jason who shared his enthusiasm for the natural world with us all ... He also taught us how to fish and we caught dinner - blue cod and Jock Stuart - expertly cooked by Kirsten.

Before I went on this cruise, i had read so many wonderful reviews and was getting worried about how these great reviews would set my expectations too high. But in the end, our Skipper Jason and our Chef Caleb lead us on a unforgettable and fun journey through Doubtful Sound... The level of experience they had and the amount of effort they put in to ensure that everyone had a great time is unparalleled. My only complaint is that the whole cruise is too short.

From start to finish this cruise exceeded our expectations. Definitely recommend the small boat - we had 8 people. A great group and we all felt relaxed. Fishing, kayaking, pulling up cray pots - and the food - Kristen your food was out of this world! Dish after dish of yummyness. Jason thank you for going the extra mile to ensure this was indeed the trip of a lifetime.

Every aspect of the trip was well organised. Would have like a little bit longer for the Kayak and swim but otherwise it was the highlight of our trip and would love to do it again. I did particularly like the moment when we stopped on the way back and were able to be present in our surroundings with no sound or human element. The guide was excellent and had vast knowledge of all the different aspects about the Doubtful Sound. Thanks.

Absolutely amazing! Everything about the cruise was awesome, and I would highly recommend the doubtful sound overnight cruise to anyone. The only very minor improvement would just be that on the kayak section it felt a little rushed and for those who don’t kayak much the pace was a little tiring without time to rest. A slower group or pace would have been helpful. Thanks though!!

The overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound was fantastic. It was wet and cloudy providing plenty of amazing waterfalls and great scenery. We’re so glad we included this trip in our NZ itinerary.

One of the best ways to experience Doubtful Sound is on a day or overnight cruise with Real Journeys, and includes a cruise across Lake Manapouri and a visit to the underground Manapouri Hydro Power Station New Zealands largest power station.

Doubtful Sound Cruise:

The day begins with a scenic cruise across Lake Manapouri, which is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in New Zealand.

The journey takes you through some of the most stunning scenery in the country, with snow-capped peaks and crystal-clear waters. As you sail across the lake, you’ll see the spectacular landscape surrounding you and take in the fresh, crisp air.

Once you reach the western shore of Lake Manapouri, you’ll disembark and board a coach for a short trip to the Manapouri underground hydro power station.

Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruise Guide: Tips and Review!

Want to find out what the Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruise is really like… and if it’s worth it?

Please note that this blog post most likely contains affiliate links to products or services I use and love! If you click on the links, it means I get a little extra pocket money at no additional cost to you. This is what keeps my website ticking over – thank you!

I’d long heard the South Island travellers’ hot tip: Doubtful Sound is THE place to go if you ever make it to Fiordland National Park. Lauded as the most beautiful, extraordinary experience many have had in New Zealand, the expectations were sky-high.

At 421m deep and 40km long, Doubtful is the deepest and second longest fiord in South Island. This means there are many magical corners to explore! And gosh, did my experience exploring them only exceed my expectations?

Read on to discover exactly what made my Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruise experience so enchanting and unforgettable.

Table of Contents

Where does the Doubtful Sound overnight cruise depart from?

The Doubtful Sound cruise departs from Lake Manapouri .

How to get to Lake Manapouri:

You will need to make your own way to Manapouri. Most visitors do this by self-driving.

However, if you’re not renting a car in New Zealand, then the best option is to get a coach ticket. Real Journeys (who run the cruise) also run several shuttle services – you will need to book this in advance to make sure you arrive on time. Some shuttle services from Queenstown go directly to Te Anau. If necessary, you can take a taxi from here to Manapouri, as they’re fairly close.

Alternatively, make things easier and book a tour that includes transport from Queenstown, such as this Doubtful Sound day trip from Queenstown , or this 3 day Doubtful Sound adventure from Queenstown.

It’s also possible to take a scenic flight from Queenstown.

Your tour will begin from the RealNZ visitor centre at Lake Manapouri. From here, you’ll take a cruise across Lake Manapouri, followed by a magical bus ride to West Arm where you’ll board the ship.

Which Doubtful Sound cruise should you pick?

There are three main options for the Doubtful Sound cruise, all of which are run by expert tour operator RealNZ (previously named Real Journeys). If you’re wondering what the best Doubtful Sound overnight cruise is for your needs, this is my advice:

  • One-day Doubtful Sound cruise: This option is best if you only have time for a day trip. However, if you only have one day, you might also consider doing to Milford Sound cruise instead. Milford Sound is smaller, so you won’t feel like you’re missing out on anything by exploring it one day. (Of course, you could also do one of each… but in that case, I’d recommend doing two days in Doubtful Sound, below, to make the most of your time.)

See prices or book tickets: One-day Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise

See prices or book tickets: One day Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise from Queenstown

  • Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruise (one night, two days): If your South Island itinerary allows for two days in Doubtful Sound, I highly recommend it. Since Doubtful covers such a large area, in one day, you simply won’t have time to discover how huge and breathtaking the fiord is. Staying on the boat overnight and being able to watch the sunset over the water is an unforgettable experience.

See prices or book tickets: Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruise

  • Two days, three nights (WINTER ONLY): in this tour option, you’ll have a whole day on the water without having to travel by land to get there and back. This is undoubtedly the best way to immerse yourself in the beauty of Fiordland.

See prices or book tickets: check the RealNZ website for more details.

If you have the time and budget for an overnight option, I highly recommend it. If I had to pick the single best and most memorable thing I did in New Zealand, then this would be it!

SUMMARY: the basics – what to expect on your Doubtful Sound Cruise

Read my full overnight cruise review below, but here’s an overview of what you can expect to see and do on the cruise.

Exploring the ship: get behind the captain’s wheel, watch the anchor go down at night, and climb the ladders and staircases to get different perspectives of the magical Doubtful Sound. You can also curl up in your private or shared cosy cabin each night.

Wildlife: Alongside an abundance of native birds, including albatrosses and the elusive Fiordland Crested Penguin, you might also see bottlenose dolphins, whales, fur seals and whales. While fur seals are a common sight, you’ll have to get lucky to see the whales and penguins!

There’s a wildlife guide on board with you the whole time, so don’t worry about missing out on anything as they’ll keep their eyes peeled for you. (Read more about the wildlife I saw during my trip in the detailed review section below!)

Food and drink: Food comes as buffet options at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Dietary requirements are catered for (phew, as I’m a vegan traveller!) but make sure you let the crew know in advance. Tea, coffee, juices, and water are covered, but you can also purchase additional drinks from the bar.

Activities: I go into more details about onboard activities below, but one of the best is the opportunity to kayak on the sound!

MY DOUBTFUL SOUND OVERNIGHT CRUISE EXPERIENCE + personal review

My memories of Doubtful Sound remain very special to me, so below are my personal experiences. Read on to find out what the overnight cruise is really like, and things you can expect to see on the way. If you want general travel tips, rather than my personal Doubtful Sound review, then skip to the end of this article and check the FAQ below.

THE JOURNEY TO DOUBTFUL SOUND FROM TE ANAU

Reaching Doubtful Sound is a journey in itself.

The tour began at the RealNZ office at Lake Manapouri. As I boarded our first ferry on Manapouri Lake, I was excited, and from the offset, things were off to a promising start. This first hour-long cruise glided through breathtaking Fiordland mountain scenery towards our connection at West Arm.

After arriving on the other side of Manapouri Lake, we boarded a 45-minute bus journey that manoeuvred around the twisty mountain road that formed the Wilmot Pass. This 671m high pass was completed to assist the construction of the Manapouri Hydroelectricity Project, connecting the power station at Lake Manapouri’s West Arm to boats offloading equipment at Doubtful Sound’s Deep Cove.

Lake Manapouri cruise review

After passing waterfalls, rivers, and scenic viewpoints, we arrived at Deep Cove, where the Fiordland Navigator was waiting for us.

There was a hum of anticipation as we boarded the ship. And, following a brief introduction on how to safely make the most of our adventure , we were given the keys to our cabins and time to investigate our home for the next two nights.

I wasn’t aware before boarding that the RealNZ Doubtful Sound cruise takes a different route every time. Depending on weather conditions and potential wildlife sightings, the ship will take the smoothest yet most exciting route possible. This means every trip is unique!

Waking up in a different part of the Sound each morning is a treat. During my trip, we began the second day at Crooked Arm and the third at Bradshaw Sound. Each spot has unique views, all seemingly more spectacular than the last.

OUR SHIP – THE FIORDLAND NAVIGATOR

Fiordland Navigator is a purpose-built ship ideal for Doubtful’s distinct balance of soothing exploration. While the exterior and dining saloon possess the allure of a bygone era, this charm matches perfectly with cosy cabins and comfortable inside and outdoor observation decks.

But the best part of the ship was the crew – from the hardworking chef to the friendly staff, you always felt in great hands.

Even the bridge was accessible, meaning you could chat with the skipper as he drove the ship. This, along with the commentary from the onboard nature guide, means visitors are always invited to learn more about the area and feel involved. Even the youngest kids on board got a chance to drive!

We also got to watch the crew raise the anchor. But don’t worry if you miss it; you’ll definitely hear it! Fortunately, the crew calls out all events, so you can unwind in the warmth, knowing you won’t miss anything.

the epic Fiordland Navigator on Doubtful Sound

On a side note, dietary requirements were accounted for throughout the day, from breakfast options to numerous choices at the 3 -course buffet dinner – including vegan and gluten-free alternatives. This was a relief, as I know from experience how hit and miss it can be travelling with a dietary requirement!

Visitors could freely wander the ship, building our day with spectacular views from every corner of the vessel.  With spacious outdoor or indoor viewing decks, I never felt crowded trying to see the views. This only added to the peaceful and secluded setting. With no other boats on the water, it felt like a very rare opportunity to gaze upon an otherwise untouched land…

THE WILDLIFE OF DOUBTFUL SOUND

If you’re a wildlife lover or birding enthusiast, you will be spoilt on your Doubtful Sound cruise. Many seabirds and marine life are home here, although no specific individual animal spotting is guaranteed. This makes sense for a company committed to conservation – this is generally the sign of an ethical animal encounter. When animals are wild and free, they appear as and when they wish. (For me, this is essential to truly enjoy a wildlife experience, so I really valued this.)

Among the common sightings are fur seals and albatross, and I loved seeing the fur seals relaxing on the rocks.

I was also lucky enough to see bottlenose dolphins swimming in the Sound! Seeing them swimming and breaching alongside small waterfalls and crooked trees was amazing. Best of all, it began to snow. Imagine that – watching dolphins jump through a flurry of falling snow!

pod of bottlenose dolphins in Doubtful Sound in the snow at Winter

Unfortunately, I didn’t see any Fiordland penguins during my trip, though I wasn’t disappointed since they are one of the world’s rarest penguin species. On occasion, whales are spotted as you sail into the Tasman Sea!

At this point, I must shout out Div, our onboard wildlife expert. His passion and fascination with the wild was contagious, and despite his keen interest, he remained very accessible and perceptive. Respected by children and adults alike, both long-term nature lovers and the vaguely curious were able to gain something from his commentary and willingness to answer questions.

ACTIVITIES DURING THE DOUBTFUL SOUND OVERNIGHT CRUISE

While impossible to get bored of the everchanging scenery, there are also various ways to thoughtfully plan activities throughout the cruise. Participation is not mandatory, but everyone was keen to join in during my trip! The second day’s kayak and tender boat adventure was the most notable activity. Whether paddling your kayak or relaxing in a tender boat, there’s no better way to get up close and personal with flora and fauna. Doubtful Sound looks immense from afar, but when you get close, you notice all the distinctive plants, rocks, and trees growing in the valley. The birch trees, who were the inspiration behind Lord of the Ring’s Treebeard, looked particularly characterful when dressed in a fresh suit of snow.

visiting Doubtful Sound in Winter

After climbing back aboard the Navigator, those brave enough took the ‘Polar Plunge’ and jumped back in the Sound’s cold water from the deck!

On board, there are various board games and books to enjoy, though my favourite discovery was the piano! The guests still lingering in the dining saloon post-breakfast were courteous enough to not only accept my request to play the piano but to politely applaud after. I very seldom get the chance to play music, and having the opportunity to unexpectedly practice in such a welcoming, unique environment (on board a literal ship in the wilderness!) remains a very special memory.

For a restful after-dinner activity, I headed to the viewing area for a nature talk by Div (our resident nature guide). This was a fab way to get the lowdown on this wild region of New Zealand. From clips of previous animal encounters and fascinating facts to learn about conservation efforts and what we can do to help, the talks were the perfect way to conclude each day.

THE MANY MOODS OF DOUBTFUL SOUND

I soon came to realise that climbing aboard the Fiordland Navigator was a gateway to more than just one mysterious fiord. In fact, cruising Doubtful Sound is like setting sail upon the waters of a thousand worlds at once.

The changing weather conditions mean one hundred different experiences of one location – or ‘the Many Moods of Doubtful Sound, as Div fondly called it. There is no ‘wrong way’ to see Fiordland, with the landscape transforming anew with each day or hour.

Famously stunning in rainfall, some say ‘you haven’t seen the Sounds before you’ve seen it in the rain’! Stormy weather brings the landscape to life, creating hundreds of waterfalls in just a few hours. Only a few of the falls are permanent, such as the aforementioned Brown Falls.

That said, stormy weather will make you reluctant to voyage into the Tasman Sea, where you feel the waves at their most choppy.

During my trip on fortunately calm seas, Div pointed out the Hares’ Ears – two rocks reaching 18m out of the water. Div told us he’d seen waves crashing the entire way over the formation, rendering them barely visible! Usually a calm, slow trip, the Tasman Sea is the only time you’re warned to sit down or hold onto the railings.

albatross Doubtful Sound wildlife 1

During my visit, our lucky conditions led to a vibrant double rainbow majestically arching over the entrance of the Doubtful Sound as we returned from the sea – a very inviting return!

The staff were also excited by the double rainbow on the first evening – just as they were by the serene, reflective sunset on the second. It reminded me, once again, that every trip to Doubtful Sound is unique, and there are always more natural treasures to be found in the skies above to the waters below.

The reflective scenery on our final night was otherworldly, with snow hanging low on the mountains and a calm sky painting the water with its changing colours.

A rainbow over doubtful sound

On that final day, we were all invited to listen to a natural concert – the so-called Sound of Silence – where we each put down our phones and cameras, and even the ship’s engine went quiet. The calm waters respected the natural symphony and joined us almost in stillness, with the waves and winds only at a whisper. I listened to the melody of a single, distant waterfall and the strumming of rain upon the deck. This was peace, or as close to it as I have experienced.

And then, the sun descended as our route switched directions, and guests’ excited murmuring and motions returned. The brightly humming engine serenaded us into the night.

REALNZ DOUBTFUL SOUND OVERNIGHT CRUISE FAQ

Best time of year to visit doubtful sound .

Autumn (March to May) is a special time in New Zealand in general, since the Autumn leaves bring a little seasonal much of the country’s woodland. However, in Fiordland, many of the trees are evergreen. No matter – Autumn brings mild weather to Fiordland, although things begin to cool down towards the end of the season.

Summer (Dec to Feb) is the best time if you want sunny weather, late evenings, and less chance of rain and wind. (Though, in Fiordland, you might have rainy weather at any time of year!) Temperatures can reach up to 30 degrees Celcius / 80 degrees Fahrenheit, so it’s a great time to take a dip in Te Anau Lake during your trip to Fiordland!

Spring (March to May), while pleasant in much of the country, brings unsettled weather to Doubtful Sound, with high chances of wind or rain. On the bright side, you’ll see vibrant wildflowers and, if you’re planning Fiordland as just one stop on your itinerary, it’s a great time to visit NZ in general, with cute lambs frolicking around the fields and cherry blossoms blooming.

Winter (June to August) is an epic time to visit Fiordland, as long as you don’t mind the cold and shorter days! The weather is more settled than usual, with snow topping the mountains. If you’re very lucky, like me, you’ll even get to see it snow in Doubtful Sound! Very occasionally, the Wilmot Pass is closed to high levels of snowfall or flooding, when cruises are cancelled. I adored my Winter Doubtful Sound cruise, and don’t think I’d change my experience for the world.

What to pack for Doubtful Sound overnight cruises

In the summer, bring shades, a sun hat and sunscreen and in Winter, you’ll definitely need a warm winter coat, layers, and a hat and gloves. (I had proper ski gloves with me as I get cold easily.)

At any time of year, you’ll need a raincoat. Doubtful Sound receives, on average, 3000-6000 millimetres of rainfall a year!

I recommend bringing a warm layer even in summer as the weather is unpredictable. Bring comfy shoes as the deck could get slippy if it rains, and don’t forget a reusable water bottle. (This is the filter water bottle I use for travel – use my discount code HAG15 for 15% off!)

Also bring a comfortable change of clothing, personal toiletries and overnight clothes such as pyjamas, insect repellent, cash for the bar, and a camera. Oh, and swimwear… just in case. Trust me.

How big is Doubtful Sound?

Doubtful Sound is 421m deep and 40km long, making it the deepest and second longest fiord in South Island.

Doubtful Sound cruise 3

Why is it called Doubtful Sound?

Back in 1770, Captain Cook named it ‘Doubtful Harbour.’ He actually didn’t enter the inlet he saw from the ocean, as he wasn’t sure if he would be able to navigate it via sailing.

In later years, it was renamed ‘Doubtful Sound’ by whalers and sealers.

Interestingly, Doubtful Sound is not a Sound at all, but a Fiord. A Fiord is a deep and narrow sea inlet, usually characterised by long corridors of water flanked by high cliffs. Fiords were originally formed by glaciers.

What is Doubtful Sound’s Māori name?

Doubtful Sound’s Māori name is Patea. Patea aptly translates to ‘the place of silence,’ and to this day remains free of noise pollution, staying true to its peaceful name.

Is Doubtful Sound worth visiting?

Yes, Doubtful Sound is absolutely worth visiting! From the magical sights and abundance of wildlife to the memorable experience of staying on board a ship, this is one of the absolute best things you can do on the South Island.

In the two and a half years I lived in New Zealand, this is the best thing I did alongside volunteering at an animal sanctuary.

All you need to know for your Doubtful Sound overnight cruise

Doubtful Sound is one of the most remote places in NZ, located in the South Island’s Fiordland National Park It is part of Te Wahipounamu – one of three sites in NZ given UNESCO World Heritage status. This must surely give you an indication of just how special this area is, and why YOU should experience a Doubtful Sound overnight cruise. Let me share why it will create an indelible memory for you.

This post may contain some affiliate links. This just means if you click on them and decide to purchase I will make a small commission from the sale. This does not affect the price you pay. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Doubtful Sound is an area where it appears time has stood still. To describe the scenery as spectacular seems to do it a disservice. Words cannot aptly describe the wealth of what you’ll see, which could vary from intensely serene, to majestically moody, or frantically exciting. Whatever the weather does, it is a landscape that will take whatever weather is thrown at it, and enhance it.

Tehnically a fjord rather than a Sound, you will sail on the deepest green waters, surrounded by incredible fjord walls, cascading waterfalls, and dramatic peaks. The view will be at one moment intimate, and the next vast.

Let’s start at the beginning.

A little history of Doubtful Sound

Doubtful Harbour was ‘discovered’ by Captain Cook in 1770, who did not actually enter the inlet as sailing past, as he was uncertain whether it was navigable under sail. It was later named Doubtful Sound by the whalers and sealers who lived there. And just like Milford Sound, neither of these is actually a Sound, but rather a Fiord.

It’s Maori name is Patea – which translates to the “sound of silence”. You’ll understand the significance of this on your trip.

It is the second-longest Fiord in NZ (approx 40kms) and the deepest (up to 421 metres). It receives rainfall on average 200 days of the year.

How to get to Doubtful Sound

Getting to Doubtful Sound is a journey in itself. Remember I said it is one of the most remote parts of NZ? That’s because it’s not easy to get to!!

Your journey begins in Manapouri. So if you’re self driving, you’ll drive to Manapouri and park there (overnight parking is available).

If you don’t have a car, you can choose a pick up through Real Journeys from Queenstown or Te Anau.

The fun begins at Pearl Harbour, in Manapouri. You’ll jump on a boat and head across Lake Manapouri to West Arm. (This is the site of the Manapouri Hydro Station, the largest in NZ.)

Here, your coach is awaiting. Jump on board for a fun and informative trip through lush rainforest, over the Wilmot Pass (NZ’s most expensive road). At the top of the pass the bus will stop so you can look down over the Sound – it’s one spectacular view, so you’ll want to ensure your camera is handy.

Each of these journeys takes about 45 minutes.

After your very picturesque journey, you arrive at Deep Cove where your boat awaits.

How long is the cruise?

Our pickup was in Manapouri at 12:30 pm, and we were returned there at 12 noon the following day. This includes approximately 2 hours of traveling each way to and from Deep Cove, so you’re actually only on the cruise ship for around 20 hours.

Your cruise ship

The details of your ship will depend on which company you choose to travel with. But all the ships sailing in the Sound are small. You are asked to just bring enough luggage for your overnight trip, and as you’ll be carrying this on the boat I highly recommend just a ‘carry on’ sized bag.

We booked with Real Journeys, and travelled on the Fiordland Navigator, which takes a maximum of 72 passengers.

Upon boarding, we were given a run down of where things were etc on the boat, and then handed the keys to our cabin.

On the Navigator all cabins are either double, twin or quad share. Our twin share cabin had an ensuite, two super comfy beds, and two good sized windows. I was pleasantly surprised by how well it worked. (Double cabins sell out fast.)

Our twin cabin for our overnight cruise

You are encouraged to roam the ship, and there are lots of areas for you to hang out with the crew and other passengers. Of course, the Fisherman (aka hubby) made a beeline for the bridge to chat to the captain.

The dining room has booths down each side, and large tables in the centre, so you’ll be sitting and eating with other passengers. This is a nice way to get to know other travelers. There’s also a hot drinks section that is available 24/7, and an onboard bar to purchase from.

In the main room / dining room of the Fiordland Navigator

The Cruise itself

In all honesty, with the word ‘cruise’ in the title, I expected to have a little relaxing time on the trip. I’d taken a book, because I thought it would be quite lovely to be able to plop myself somewhere peaceful, and read with a view.

How wrong was I!

Our cruise was exciting and engaging from the minute we left the dock, and I didn’t want to miss a minute of the everchanging landscape.

We encountered an unusual weather pattern, where we had extremely strong, gusting, warm wind. (It’s not usually warm). Forget about the beautiful serene image that’s often captured in Doubtful Sound pictures, ours was the opposite.

The wind ricocheted off the cliffs, creating mini tornados that danced across the water in front of us. It was utterly mesmerising. Every way we turned was a new dance, and we couldn’t stop looking. Despite the wind, the boat was surprisingly stable, so thankfully we didn’t feel any seasickness from it.

Wind dancing across the water on our Doubtful Sound overnight cruise

Watching the wind from the bridge was fascinating, but stepping outside onto the deck into the wind was ….. invigorating. It was so unusual because it was warm (it would have been bitter had it been cold). It was Mother Nature showing off, showing just how powerful she can be. Honestly, you had to hold on tight to maintain your position. Taking a photo was a huge challenge, and of course, photos cannot do the sights’ justice.

At one stage our views were disrupted by a pod of bottlenose dolphins who decided to play in our bow waters.

We traveled along the dancing waters to the mouth of the Tasman Sea. Here seals lay on rocks, seemingly oblivious to the wind. This is where Captain Cook first viewed the entrance to the Sound, but chose not to enter because it was ‘doubtful’ he’d be able to navigate the channel.

Seals on the rocks at the mouth of the Tasman Sea on Doubtful Sound overnight cruise

We retreated from here to cruise to calmer waters. It seemed unthinkable in these winds that we’d find them, but the Captain knows all the secret spots, and delivered the goods.

We anchored, and were offered the opportunity to explore the shoreline in kayaks, or in a tender boat. We chose the kayaks, and loved being on the water like that.

Kayaking on our Doubtful Sound overnight cruise

After everyone was back on board, there was then the chance for any hardy souls to jump into the water. I say hardy, because the water sits at a stable 13-15C (around 60F). A few took the chance to plunge into these special waters. (Although the Sound is obviously sea water, it has a layer of fresh water on top (2-10 metres), fed from the high rainfalls that the surrounding mountains receive).

Hot soup and freshly baked rolls was offered for all, as a starter while chef prepared our delicious buffet dinner.

After dinner, the onboard nature specialist delivered a presentation about the area. This is a wonderful way to learn more about the history, and the flora and fauna that you’re seeing. Our guide was available for questions throughout the journey, which really adds to the value you get from this trip.

Sadly for us, there was a lot of cloud cover, so star gazing was not an option. Probably just as well, as for some reason we were exhausted, and happily head to our cabins for the night.

I’m an ‘early bird’, and hoped this habit of mine would reward me with a beautiful sunrise. However, I hadn’t factored on the sun coming up so much later this far South, AND the rain. I think other than the chef I was the first one up on the boat, so got to enjoy a coffee in the lounge, staring out at the inky black. As the sun rose, the rain started, and so began the next transformation of our view.

It started with a moody, misty mysteriousness, with peaks receding into grayscale shadows.

Moody scenes on our Doubtful Sound overnight cruise

Then the rain developed, and turned on the waterfalls. We had seen a few beautiful falls as we explored the Sound yesterday, but nothing can prepare you for what happens when it rains in Fiordland. You almost feel sorry for those who only have sunshine and calm.

Thousands of waterfalls appear, you’ll be busy pointing out this one and that one, and this one and that one, and on it goes.

Waterfalls spring up everywhere when in rains in Doubtful Sound

We tore ourself away only to devour our hearty cooked breakfast.

Then it was time for a special moment on the cruise. We traveled up Hall Arm, to find an incredible scenic spot to stop.

The captain turned off the engines, and we had 5 minutes to experience the ‘sound of silence’. No talking, no whispering, no camera clicks, no noise. Just 5 minutes, being with yourself in the environment. For many this is a very profound moment. It’s certainly very special to be so still, in an area where the only noise was the waterfalls entering the sea, and birds singing in the rain.

As we motored back to Deep Cove, we passed a small island where rare crested penguins were spotted. How special it is to see them was evident in every crew member stopping what they were doing, to join us all in viewing them.

And then just like that, we were docking, and jumping back into a bus to head back over the Pass.

What’s included in your overnight cruise?

Our fee with Real Journeys included the boat trip across Lake Manapouri, the coach trip over the Wilmot Pass, the cruise, activities (kayaking, tender excursion, nature talk), a 3 course dinner, hot cooked breakfast, and the hot drink station available 24/7.

The only thing not included in the fee was purchases from the onboard licensed bar. (You will need cash or a credit card to make purchases).

It’s obviously not a ‘cheap’ cruise, but once you’ve experienced it, you’ll know it was money well spent.

Should I do a Doubtful Sound or Milford Sound overnight cruise?

Gosh, this is a hard question to answer.

In a nutshell, I’d recommend you do the DAY trip on Milford Sound , and the overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound.

Getting to Milford Sound is a journey in itself. There are lots of places to stop along the way, and it is a stunningly beautiful drive, with scenery you won’t see anywhere else.

The peaks in Milford are higher and more dramatic than Doubtful, and the open sea areas larger.

So if you’re short on time, my recommendation would be Milford.

But if you’re tossing up between a cruise on either, then Doubtful is the way to go.

Doubtful Sound is a much larger area to explore by boat, so the environment you’re sailing in has much more diversity. And because it’s so remote, you’re likely only see another boat or two whilst on your trip. You’ll see a landscape not many get to see and experience.

How much does it cost to cruise on Doubtful Sound?

Depending on when you go, and who you choose to travel with, will determine how much you pay.

If budget is a consideration, you can bring the price down by sharing a quad share cabin. This really is a good option, as you’ll likely spend very little time in your cabin anyway.

Prices start from around $300 and go up to around $700.

There is the chance for a day trip on Doubtful Sound also, but I can’t help but think you’d miss out on so much only doing the day trip.

When should you book your cruise for the best weather?

In short, anytime and any weather is a good time for your cruise.

This area in Fiordland receives on average 200 days of rain a year – so there’s a good chance it could rain on your cruise. Trust me – this is a good thing! It’s probably one of the few trips you’d ever do where you want rain. I almost feel sorry for the people who only get to experience Doubtful on a sunny day.

When it rains in Fiordland, it turns on the waterfalls, and it is truly spectacular.

When it’s sunny in Fiordland (and calm), the reflections on the water are inspirational.

When it’s misty and moody in Fiordland, it’s extraordinary.

And when it’s snowing, I can only imagine how magical it is.

In short, don’t worry about the weather, it will be perfect and special whatever you get, and will add to your experience of an overnight cruise in Doubtful Sound.

What companies offer an overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound?

This was a trip I’d been lusting after for a while.

We booked it when NZ came out of their first Covid lockdown, and struggled to get a booking. In fact, I’d picked a date, but when I went back into book, it had sold out, as had 5 days either side of my original choice.

When I finally found a date that worked, we couldn’t get a double cabin.

This trip is very popular, whether or not NZ is open to international tourists. So make this the first booking you make if you’re planning a trip in the area, then work everything else around it.

At the time of writing, these are the companies I found that offered the overnight cruise option;

  • Real Journeys
  • Southern Secret
  • Fiordland Discovery
  • Fiordland Expeditions

What should you take on your overnight cruise?

As mentioned at the beginning, it is recommend you only take what you’ll need for your overnighter, and nothing else. You will be required to carry your bag up and down stairs, so you don’t want it to be too heavy.

My usual roll on cabin bag for flights was the perfect size.

These are what I’d suggest you put inside it;

  • rain proof jacket
  • personal toiletries
  • comfortable flat footwear
  • insect repellant
  • cash for the bar/snacks
  • change of clothes
  • warm sweater

So – don’t delay, book today.

And let me know how much you enjoyed it when you get back!

This looks amazing Megan. I want to do it!!

I am very certain you would LOVE it!

What a fabulous trip. And thanks for the advice on doing day trip to Milford Sound and overnight to Doubtful Sound. I’m hoping to get to NZ soon and both are on my radar.

This area looks so serene! I love the mist atop the water. The kayaking looks like great fun, too.

This looks so cool. I had no idea Doubtful Sound even existed. My husband and I are planning a trip to NZ and I will check on adding this to the list! Thanks for sharing. 🙂

We did a day cruise on Milford sound and it was just absolutely stunning…I now need to come back to NZ to do a night cruise on doubtful sound!

You do! They’re similarly stunning, but oh so different.

This looks like such a unique trip! Doubtful Sound wouldn’t have been on my list if I hadn’t checked out your blog. Thanks for sharing your recommendations and tips!

Thanks for giving me a taste of home! I grew up in NZ, but have never cruised on Doubtful Sound (all those things you don’t do if you live in a place, right?!). At least the pandemic taught us to appreciate our own countries a bit more!

You’re so right!

I don’t know how I haven’t heard of this place before. This sounds incredible and is exactly the type of trip I love. Thank you for sharing!

I will definitely look at a one night cruise in Doubtful Sound when I travel to NZ!

I’ve never heard of Doubtful Sound! This cruise seems like such a fun adventure. Thanks for putting this spot on my radar!

NZ is on my bucket list (I’m in US) but I didn’t realize some areas had so much rain. We love cruising but have never done a small one like this. If I was there, I would surely look into it. Loved all the waterfalls from the rain.

Such a great guide! I’ve always wanted to visit New Zealand so even better getting around by boat and seeing so many amazing things. Definitely on my bucketlist!

Absolutely stunning views everywhere! And so great you got visited by dolphins. I would love to kayak there, but a little too cold for swimming IMO

I’ve only visited Milford Sound years ago as a broke backpacker but it’s been a dream to return back to NZ in the next couple of years. Milford Sound was incredible, and I can only imagine how amazing Doubtful Sound is. Also, isn’t that one of the greatest names for a place? Spending a night cruising sounds fantastic, and as you said every type of weather makes the Sound appear differently. Great post!

I hope you’re able to get back here, and explore more! Thanks!

Kia Ora Megan!

Thank you for your wonderful description! Although I booked before I read your post, it helped me get all excited again. My son and I are going on August 11th….for a TWO night cruise! 2 sunsets, 2 sunrises… I’ll let you know what it is like if we get snow.

Take Care! Mary

Lucky you! A 2 night cruise will I’m sure double the joy and experiences. I’ll look forward to hearing exactly what it’s like. 🙂
