Pros and Cons of Driving on Cruise Control
- Monday, June 14th, 2021
What are the advantages of cruise control?
South Africans are big fans of taking a great road trip. Gauteng folks love their long drives to seaside resorts come December — whether Durban or Cape Town — plus there’s the Garden Route and even the magnificent Drakensberg, perfectly positioned between KZN and Gauteng for all to enjoy. So the open road calls no matter where you’re based and, let’s be honest, when you have a Subaru, any excuse to spend as much time in your car as possible is something we can all agree on!
It’s during those long stretches between rest-stops that you’re going to get the best enjoyment from cruise control which allows you to set the speed you’re travelling at without having to keep your foot on the accelerator. By activating cruise control, you’re able to give your right leg a break, avoid speeding fines and ensure you stick to a smooth flow within the traffic on the freeway. And while we highlight the joy of those long trips, cruise control is certainly not exclusive to those situations; any time you’re using highways or driving on a stretch of road where you’d prefer to set one constant speed, cruise control is just perfect and a perfectly safe option (specifically in a Subaru!).
To get started:
- Turn the cruise control system on
- Set the cruising speed
- Use the controls to increase, decrease or cancel the cruise control while driving
- Cancel cruise control at any time by pressing the brake pedal
While standard cruise control is best used on the open road, Subaru has got your traffic concerns covered with Adaptive Cruise Control too.
What does Adaptive Cruise Control do?
Befitting Subaru’s reputation for technological innovation, Adaptive Cruise Control is a game-changer for long trips and uses the EyeSight® system to maintain a set distance from the vehicle in front of you on the road.
Cruise control is not unique to the Subaru brand, so while taking a look at the pros and cons of cruise control, let’s do so first with a broad overview of using this innovative tech in general.
Cruise control advantages and disadvantages:
Top three pros:
- Good Fuel Economy
- Better Driving Comfort
- Avoid Speeding
Cruise Control Disadvantages
What are the disadvantages of cruise control?
Top four cons:
- Bad for Tired Drivers
- Harder to Slow Down Quickly
- Harder to Drive in Bad Weather
- Easier to Get Distracted
It wouldn’t be fair to ignore these cons in the general context of using cruise control, though we at Subaru have moved the goalposts when it comes to safety which humbly renders these cons pretty abstract as far as owning a Subaru goes. The innovative technologies we’ve curated are focussed on ensuring the safest drive possible.
You see, our Pre-Collision Braking System provides automatic braking when EyeSight detects a potential frontal impact. The Pre-Collision Braking System provides automatic braking to help avoid or reduce the severity of detected frontal accident impacts. Should the driver be distracted or not register the risk of a collision, braking will be automatically applied when it is recognised by EyeSight.
Furthermore, Pre-Collision Throttle Management reduces available acceleration in situations where the system detects objects in front of the vehicle that the vehicle is likely to hit. The engine output is restricted to reduce possible impact force and frontal impact damage, and to help prevent injury should the driver mistakenly accelerate.
When it comes to Adaptive Cruise Control, Subaru maintains the speed set by the driver, but also regulates the vehicle’s speed in order to maintain a set distance from the car in front of it. The driver can select from three different distances, based on time and speed, and then the EyeSight Driver Assist System will automatically use braking and monitoring technologies to regulate the vehicle’s speed, in line with the traffic flow.
What’s the best way to really understand cruise control and how Suabru has ticked the boxes for all the safety aspects that go with it? Take one for a test drive of course!

Cruise control is a modern in-car feature that allows you to drive with ease without keeping your right foot on the accelerator as it automatically regulates the speed of your car at a chosen setting. Consumers should also note that the cruise control system has to do with convenience and comfort and not substitute it as a safety feature.
- Better driving comfort when traveling long distances
- Saves on petrol consumption
- Helps to avoid violating the speed limit
- It allows you to maintain a specific speed at all times
- Reduces emissions released by the car
- Delayed breaking as it is harder to slow down quickly
- It is not ideal for fatigued drivers
- It is not ideal for bad weather conditions eg. wet roads after rain, as the car can be more difficult to control
- It’s easy to become distracted while on cruise control
While cruise control makes for the perfect adventure setting on longer road trips, it is essential to note that cruise control is the safest and most useful in the best driving conditions possible as listed above and should be used with caution to avoid any accidents. At the end of the day, you are still in charge of your driving experience.

TECH: We test three adaptive cruise control systems…
Adaptive cruise control is not only useful, but also an important part of the autonomous driving puzzle. However, not all systems operate in the same way. We put three to the test…
I t is early morning outside Bloemfontein on the N1 and the fog is impenetrable. If I drive too slowly, I risk getting hit from behind; up the speed and I might plough into the car in front. These are the kind of conditions where adaptive cruise control (ACC) can be a life -saving safety feature and, fortunately, my Ford Kuga long-termer is equipped with this useful tech.
I set the speed to 80 km/h and the following distance to the maximum setting. Not long after, the Kuga slows and, sure enough, two faint rear lights appear in the grey wall ahead.
While ACC was not invented primarily as a safety net, it is clear that the technology is an important building block on the way to fully autonomous driving. We decided to put systems fitted to three of our long-term vehicles to the test.
THE TECHNOLOGY
Continental manufactures not only tyres, but is one of the main ACC system suppliers, with more than 30 million of its radar sensors sold to auto-motive OEMs. We recently chatted to Norbert Hammerschmidt, Continental’s head of programme management for radar, about the technology. According to him, because it is unaffected by adverse weather conditions (including thick fog), the radar sensor is the most common component used in vehicles fitted with ACC.
Radar: Continental radar sensor tech is now in its fifth generation and is supplied as a package including a processor and software. This sensor operates at 77 GHz and employs the Doppler effect to identify objects with a relative speed difference in a 65° “V” forward from the sensor, up to a distance of 300 metres.
Early sensors could not operate at short distance, which meant that ACC systems did not work in stop/start traffic (usually below 30 km/h). This type of sensor is a cheaper alternative and is still used in some applications (our Ford Kuga long-termer is equipped with it).
Lidar: this is another type of sensor that functions similarly to radar, but uses a laser that produces pulses.
Cameras: Subaru’s innovative Eyesight dual-camera system is the third type of technology used. Our Subaru XV long-termer is equipped with this and it also formed part of our evaluation testing.
Interestingly, in some ACC systems, the radar sensors do not only pick up the immediate vehicle in front, but may also “see” the next vehicle in line as the waves move underneath the first car. This information feeds into the vehicle’s ACC algorithms in case it needs to perform an emergency braking manoeuvre that may cause a chain reaction on the vehicles behind.
These algorithms are developed to identify target vehicles and prevent “false detections” like stationary vehicles next to the road, as well as oncoming traffic in the opposite lane. Steering angle is also one of the inputs used to determine the vehicle’s trajectory when, for example, you may be following another car around a bend. As the sensor is connected to a vehicle’s CAN bus (the network linking all the electronic control units, including the engine control unit), it can control the vehicle’s longitudinal acceleration through accelerating and braking.
Minimum following distances are specified by relevant authorities in the markets where the vehicle is sold, as well as the requirements of the manufacturer. Supplier companies like Continental therefore use resident engineers to help calibrate the system for a specific supplier according to all the legal and client requirements.
Vehicle manufacturers often boast about the power output of their engines, or the size of the infotainment screen, but little information is available regarding the specification of a vehicle’s ACC system. That’s why we put three systems to the test and evaluate the differences between them.
The vehicles:
Three of our long-termers proved the perfect test vehicles, a German (Audi Q2), an American (Ford Kuga) and a Japanese (Subaru XV) manufacturer. The Audi and Ford employ radar-based systems, whereas the Subaru utilises the dual-camera setup.
TEST 1: FOLLOWING DISTANCE
The system on each vehicle allows the driver to select the desired distance to the vehicle in front, between a minimum and maximum setting. We measured the minimum and maximum distance (using a Bushnell laser range-finder) at speeds of 60 and 120 km/h (true GPS speed verified with our Racelogics VBox units) with the following results:
From the above results it is clear that the minimum distances are fairly similar, pointing to a safety regulatory requirement aimed at preventing rear-end collisions. By looking at the maximum distances however, it is clear that the Audi’s system in the Q2 has the longest range capability, with a maximum distance at 120 km/h of over 100 m.
TEST 2: DECELERATION RESPONSE
In this test, the subject vehicle’s ACC was set to 120 km/h and was allowed to catch another test vehicle cruising ahead at 60 km/h. The idea was to register the subject vehicle’s ACC system’s braking response to see if it was able to:
• Prevent a collision without driver intervention.
• Adjust the subject vehicle’s speed to match 60 km/h.
All three vehicles were able to slow autonomously, but the response times from each ACC system were vastly different.
Looking at the graphic that depicts vehicle speed against time, it is clear that the Subaru’s system was the most aggressive and took only eight seconds to slow from 120 to 60 km/h. From a driver’s perspective, it was the most uncomfortable experience of the three and a degree of courage and discipline was needed not to intervene, as it felt like the system was leaving the adjustment to the last minute.
The ACC system in the Audi was the only one that allowed the driver to adjust the response, by toggling between comfort and dynamic modes. This did not impact deceleration and in both cases it took just over 12 seconds to slow down.
The Kuga had the most linear response that subjectively felt very comfortable, completing the test in a relaxing 13 seconds.
TEST 3: ACCELERATION RESPONSE
This test placed the emphasis on the ACC system’s ability to accelerate when asked to return to the set speed.
Once again, the vehicle ahead was travelling at a steady 60 km/h, but this time it would move aside, allowing the subject vehicle to accelerate back up to the set speed of 120 km/h.
In this test, the Subaru was the least dynamic and took a leisurely 30 seconds to get back up to 120 km/h. The Ford and Audi (in the comfort setting) took around 23 seconds to complete the task. In its dynamic setting, the Audi accelerated with zest and needed just 13 seconds to blast back up to the original speed.
TEST 4: STOP/START OPERATION
Both the Audi and Subaru successfully completed the city drive test and came to a complete stop behind a stationary vehicle. The Ford Kuga’s ACC system does not function below 30 km/h, which meant it could not complete the city driving test.
On both the Subaru and Audi, if the vehicle is stationary for more than a couple of seconds, the driver has to initiate the ACC system again by touching the accelerator pedal (or pulling the Q2’s cruise control stalk). According to Hammerschmidt, this is to prevent a potential collision with a pedestrian.
Future ACC systems will have two short-range sensors on the vehicle’s front corners to monitor objects crossing its path and allowing the ACC system to pull away by itself in stop/start traffic.
Bushnell laser range-finder
We needed a way to quickly and accurately measure the distance between the subject vehicle (with active ACC) and the vehicle in front. Bushnell kindly provided its Tour-X laser range finder developed for professional golfers to measure the exact distance to the pin. With a range of between 5 and 1 189 metres (and slope technology), it was perfectly suited to our test. The unit’s suggested retail price is R8 999 and you can find more information on this useful piece of kit at bushnellgolf.com …

Cruise control can lower fuel consumption by 20% – If used correctly
According to MasterDrive, an advanced driver training company in South Africa, using cruise control correctly has the potential to reduce your fuel consumption by 20% for the duration that the feature is active.
Cruise control is a useful ability that keeps a car moving at a prescribed speed without the need for driver intervention, and on newer models, adaptive cruise control will even keep a safe following distance between two vehicles and slow down or speed up a car when needed.
However, it will only bring fuel savings when used in the appropriate conditions, this being on flat, constant surfaces where there is little change in elevation or speed, said MasterDrive.
Petrol, diesel, and hybrid vehicles are at their most efficient when cruising at consistent speeds on open, level roads, which is what cruise control was designed for.
When not to use cruise control
While cruise control is a handy feature that can take strain off a driver as well as save fuel, it’s not always the best option.
For instance, activating cruise control on uneven roads will use more fuel than if a driver was to control the speed manually.
“On inclines, cruise control is slower than a driver to react to gradient changes,” said MasterDrive.
“When a driver reaches the top of a hill, they decrease their pressure on the accelerator much faster than what cruise control can sense a change in the gradient.”
Over time, using cruise control on mountainous roads can cause a noticeable increase in consumption.
Similarly, cruise control must never be activated in moderate-to-heavy traffic or wet weather as it increases the potential for something to go wrong.
In these scenarios, constantly adjusting, stopping, and restarting cruise control as traffic slows down and speeds up will result in higher fuel usage than if the driver was to control throttle inputs themselves.
Cruise control also allows the driver to lower their attention levels and they might therefore not be able to get the car to a complete stop if traffic quickly starts piling up, which could lead to severe accidents.

Does cruise control save fuel?
By Stuart Johnston
The answer to this question is a complex one. The best way to save fuel is to drive at the slowest speed possible in the highest gear possible, at a constant throttle (accelerator) opening. The more you depress the accelerator pedal, the more fuel will be pumped into the engine.
But it is not always practical to drive, for example, at 80 km/h in sixth or seventh gear on a freeway, where most of the other traffic is doing its best to maintain or exceed our national speed limit on freeways of 120 km/h.
Good for clear, open-road driving
Cruise control is a tool best used for freeway driving , or on dual lane open road driving, when there is not too much in the way of traffic. In heavy traffic, the speeds of cars around you will often cause you to suddenly slow down and speed up, and here it is better to manually control the accelerator pedal.
The most important aspect of cruise control is that it prevents you from inadvertently increasing your speed on long open stretches of road. Today, powerful modern cars are often configured to cruise perfectly safely and effortlessly at speeds of in excess of 160 km/h. This is particularly true of the more expensive German cars, which are designed for operation on their autobahns , where speeds of up to 200 km/h are not uncommon.
Driving such powerful and efficient cars, which feel perfectly safe at speeds of 200 km/h, in South Africa, it is all too easy on long stretches of open road to have your speed creep up to considerably more than the speed limit of 120 km/h. Setting a cruise control speed of 120 km/h will prevent you from inadvertently breaking the speed limit and risking a heavy fine.
But Cruise Control doesn’t anticipate up-hills and downhills.
In terms of saving fuel, Cruise Control works best where the terrain is reasonably flat. However, on roads with major accents and descents, Cruise Control cannot anticipate the road ahead the way an alert driver can.
An alert driver will know that the best way to save fuel is to be as light on the accelerator as possible, while keeping the car in a gear as high as possible for the terrain to reduce engine revs.
In the case of undulating terrain, the alert driver will allow the car to speed up slightly on down-hills, and carry that momentum through to uphill sections, without having to alter the accelerator pedal positioning, or manually change down a gear or two.
In Cruise Control mode, the car’s computer will simply “instruct” the car to maintain a selected speed, and on downhills this can actually mean the car is braking, while on the following uphill it will then not take advantage of momentum that a driver can have dialled in.
Deciding when to accelerate harder, or downshift for up-hills
Of course in extreme up-hills, the driver will need to downshift a gear or more to maintain momentum. Here it is a judgement call on whether to simply push down the accelerator harder to maintain speed, or keep a constant accelerator position and manually downshift to a lower gear.
Tests with fuel flow meters have found that, generally, it is better to gradually depress the accelerator to maintain speed on up-hills, but not to labour the engine in a higher gear. The trick is, with speed dropping off uphill, to down-shift one gear at the optimum point, so that the engine remains in its optimum power range, at which point you can actually ease off the accelerator pedal to maintain speed in the lower gear.
In Cruise Control, the car’s electronic control units will be prioritised to maintaining that set speed regardless of fuel usage, or gear selection, and this will mean that it will actually use more fuel than necessary, in an undulating terrain.

You can now enjoy the ultimate driving experience, thrill and comfort of taking your foot off the accelerator pedal and allowing the cruise control to maintain the speed you have selected, while you have complete control over the vehicle at your fingertips. Considering the long distances we travel in South Africa and the associated discomfort resulting from having your body and foot in one position all the time, fitting an AutoCruise is a wise investment. Tests conducted on drivers that use cruise controls confirm that the reduced levels of driving stress result in a more alert, and therefore a safer driver.
How Cruise control works The cruise control system is user friendly, safe and easy to operate. Start the vehicle, accelerate and stabilise the vehicle at the required speed, press “Set” on the command and the cruise control will take over the accelerator control from your foot and ensure that the set speed is maintained. The command allows you to increase or decrease the set speed. Should traffic conditions change, the cruise control can be disengaged by switching the cruise control off or by pressing the “Coast” cruise function on the command or by pressing the brake or clutch. To return to the previous set speed after the unit was disengaged, press the “Resume” button on the command. The minimum engaging speed can be set to meet the customer’s requirements. Normally this is set at 45 km/h.
With a vehicle cruise control system you can now enjoy the ultimate driving experience, thrill and comfort of taking your foot off the accelerator pedal and allowing the AutoCruise to maintain the speed you have selected.
