Known for its coffee, salsa, jungles, and fascinating landmarks like the Zipaquira Salt Cathedral and Penon del Guatape, Colombia isn't popular with tourists without reason. If you're planning to visit the country soon, it should come as no surprise that you won't be able to call, SMS, or access the web on the go with your smartphone as you usually would at home, and if you do manage to get connected via roaming, it can result in hefty additional charges.

However, none of this means you should leave your smartphone at home. If your device is a newish model (i.e., from 2019 or later), there's a good chance it'll support an eSIM. These nifty digital SIM cards can be downloaded and installed before you travel, promising blazing-fast internet in Colombia at a very low cost compared to roaming and great convenience compared to physical SIMs. In this guide, we explore everything you have to know about eSIMs in Colombia and what the best deals might be for you.

Dodge sky-high roaming costs, unexpected data charges, or spotty service on your trip to Colombia by using an eSIM from Airalo to connect directly to local network providers like Movistar. ✨ If you're a new customer, use code MONITO15 to get 15% off your first Airalo eSIM, and if you're a returning customer, use MONITO10 to get 10% off today! Go to Airalo now to get started.

As we'll explore in more depth in this guide, when choosing an eSIM, you have two options. The first option is for you to go through a digital eSIM provider, and the second option is to purchase an eSIM directly from your network provider or carrier. We strongly recommend the first option. After all, with reputable online providers, you can always be sure you'll get good support, excellent rates, and quality instructions that normally exceed those of the big carriers.

According to our review and comparison of the best options on the market, here are the three best eSIM providers for Colombia and other countries worldwide:

Best Overall: Airalo

Airalo  is an excellent eSIM provider for Colombia . Its online platform offers global access to eSIMs through collaboration with big local telecom providers. In Colombia, for example, Airalo works directly with Movistar, one of Colombia's mobile largest network operators, to provide you with high-speed coverage directly from their networks across all cities and most popular tourist spots across the nation.

Once-off prices for eSIMs in Colombia range from $8 to $32.50 and include between 1 GB and 5 GB of data. Depending on your plan, that's just $6.50 to $8 per gigabyte, which isn't bad for a country like Colombia. Most travellers should be able to get by with these amounts without any problems. Setting up and activating your eSIM happens entirely on your smartphone, and it's very quick. In our test, we just took two minutes (watch our how-to video on YouTube to see how it's done). Moreover, you can easily top this up via the Airalo app if you start running low on data during your trip. This saves you time and hassle compared to buying a physical SIM, where you'd usually need to stand in line at the counter to buy or top up your card or package.

We also recommend Airalo in general, especially if you travel overseas often. The service provides an excellent connectivity companion while you're abroad in dozens of countries. To find out more about this excellent eSIM provider, take a look at our in-depth Airalo review .

Considering Airalo? Take advantage of the following special offers until the 31st of December 2024:

  • New customer? Use the code   MONITO15   to claim a 15% discount on all Airalo eSIMs.  Ts & Cs  apply.
  • Returning customer? Use the code  MONITO10  to claim a 10% discount on all Airalo eSIMs.

Best For Unlimited Data: Holafly

Holafly  is another trusted eSIM service which also offers eSIMs for Colombia. The remarkable thing about Holafly is that it only provides packages with unlimited data for Colombia and other countries worldwide. Although these packages cost quite a bit more than the smaller Airalo packages, in return, they offer the certainty that you'll never use up all your data.

Holafly's data packages cost between $19 and $54 once off for trips to Colombia and are valid from five to 20 days. Like Airalo, Holafly's plans in Colombia give you data via local carriers, although this time through Telefónica networks. This means you'll get coverage like a local no matter where you travel in the country (however, coverage can still drop in large parts of Colombia like the Andes or Amazon, as we'll see later in this article.)

Although Holafly's packages are generally great if you'd like uncapped access to the web, it's worth remembering that most travellers don't usually need such a large sum of data and that normally, 5 GB to 10 GB, at most, should be enough for everyday travel needs in Colombia like navigating, browsing, and using social media. Moreover, your speeds might be temporarily throttled if you use a very extensive amount of data (e.g., for non-stop HD streaming or downloading large files). During our test in the UK, this happened to us at around 4.5 GB of usage. Sadly, Holafly's fair use policies don't clearly outline when networks throttle speeds since it comes down to the individual network or carrier and the country you're browsing in.

If you're curious, we tested Holafly extensively to see if its data plans really live up to their 'unlimited' promise. The short answer? Yes, but there are a few things you should know. Take a look at our Holafly review to find out what they are.

Considering Holafly? Use the code  MONITO  at checkout to claim a 5% discount on all Holafly eSIMs. Go to Holafly now to get started! ✨

Best For 10 GB Package: Yesim

colombia travel esim

A smaller and newer company than Airalo and Holafly, Yesim  is a Swiss-based eSIM provider offering highly-rated eSIMs for Colombia and other countries around the globe. Its website and app are simple, straightforward, and easy to use, and over 300,000 customers have chosen Yesim's eSIMs so far.

Like its larger competitors, Yesim gives you an eSIM card connecting to local carriers while you're in Colombia (specifically Claro networks). It can be installed quickly and effortlessly right from the app or via a QR code sent to your email after purchase. Interestingly, alongside its eSIM service, Yesim also offers a virtual number service that allows you to get an online-only US (+1), Canadian (+1), or Israeli (+972) mobile phone number to use for apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, OpenAI, Binance, Tinder, or TikTok. These virtual numbers can be used for a flat fee of $2.75 per month.

Going back to eSIMs, Yesim's packages cost between $14.30 and $37.40 in Colombia for 1 GB to 10 GB (that's just $3.74 to $14.30 per gigabyte), with contract durations lasting from seven to 30 days. Yesim also offers three unlimited packages in Colombia for seven- and fifteen-day durations, although the upfront cost is higher at $31.90 and $51.70, respectively.

Although well-priced, we still think that Yesim's data packages are ever-so-slightly less attractive than Airalo's when traveling to Colombia. However, it's worth remembering that, depending on your plan, Yesim's prices can sometimes be fractionally lower per gigabyte than Airalo's, so if you're looking for the best deal, make sure you visit Yesim's website and compare their prices to Airalo's directly.

How Do They Compare?

In the chart below, we've compared Airalo, Holafly, and Yesim based on a few factors you might find important on your trip to Colombia or anywhere else in the world. As you'll see, the three are very competitive, with differences normally being slight. If you'd like to compare Holafly and Airalo directly, take a look at our side-by-side review of the two too.

Which Colombian Carrier Is Best?

Sunset over the jungle surroundings of Minca, Santa Marta, Magdalena, Colombia.

Colombia has only a few major mobile network operators, which we've listed below:

  • Avantel/WOM

No matter which of these networks your eSIM connects to, you can rest assured that you'll enjoy good coverage in pretty much all cities and tourist destinations in Colombia , including Bogotá, San Andres, Cartagena, Medellin, Santa Marta, and other cities and popular tourist spots. However, Colombia is an enormous country, and much of the nation's landmass is covered by remote jungles, deserts, and mountains. Accordingly, your coverage will probably become spotty or even nonexistent if you travel to a more remote region of Colombia, particularly the eastern side of the Andes in the Cordillera Oriental region, large parts of the border regions with Venezuela, including the Guajira Desert, as well as (of course) the vast Amazon rainforest in the country's interior, including most of the Amazonas, Vaupes, Guiania, Guiaviare, Caqueta, Meta, and Vichada regions.

If you'd like to double-check if the region you're traveling to is covered by the various carriers, take a look at this handy map . According to their website, the three biggest private networks (Claro, Movistar, and Tigo) all offer pretty similar levels of coverage across Colombia.

💳 Planning to use your credit or debit card on your Colombian trip? You'll probably pay much more than you think in hidden exchange rate fees every time you tap your card or withdraw cash. Do I Need a SIM Card in Colombia?

Cars parked in front of green and white concrete building in Getsemani, Cartagena, Colombia.

No, you don't need a SIM card as a tourist in Colombia, but having one will enable you to access useful travel apps like Google Maps, social media, Uber, or Airbnb without having to rely on WiFi.

A good place to start would be to review your contract from your mobile network provider before you travel to Colombia. Most contracts are limited to use just within your home country (or within the European Union if you live in an EU country). For all other countries, so-called 'roaming charges' typically apply. However, there is one exception: specific contracts sometimes allow you to use your data worldwide. If you have a global internet contract, you can also use it in Colombia without unexpected roaming charges.

Otherwise, although precise roaming charges differ according to your network provider, the fees for using mobile internet in Colombia are typically around $2 or $3 per 6 MB (six megabytes) of data used, though they could still be higher. For example, if you wanted to download an average-sized app from the Google Play Store onto your Android smartphone, you'd use around 24 MB and pay $8 to $10 in roaming charges. It should, therefore, be clear that roaming with your regular SIM card in Colombia is generally not worthwhile and can lead to enormous costs. As we saw earlier, purchasing a local Colombian SIM card once you arrive or, better yet, an eSIM before you travel is significantly cheaper.

What Are eSIMs, Anyway?

A cathedral rooftop in Barichara, Colombia.

Simply put, eSIMs are regular SIM cards that don't require inserting an actual microchip into your device while providing the same benefits. Newer smartphones (but also smartwatches, tablets, and other devices) can be equipped with eSIMs, and since you don't need an actual SIM card to install an eSIM, you can also get one before your trip to Colombia. To do this, all you have to do is visit an online eSIM service, purchase the eSIM you want, and follow the instructions to download and install it onto your device.

Like regular SIM cards, prepaid eSIMs come bundled with a certain fixed amount of data, SMSes, or telephone minutes, which you can use at your leisure while travelling. You get to choose the package you want, and you can generally also extend your eSIM's validity easily right from an app.

Pros of Using an eSIM

In general, eSIMs have numerous advantages and are often a better alternative to regular SIM cards for most tourists. In our opinion, the most significant advantages include:

  • internet immediately upon arrival in Colombia,
  • no negotiating with SIM card sellers at the airport,
  • transparent and fair pricing,
  • online extension is often possible,
  • credit card payment is possible,
  • local telecom provider networks are used.

In our opinion, there are only a few reasons against using an eSIM when travelling to Colombia (which we'll discuss below). In most instances, we're sure that it's a far better deal than using your normal SIM card from your home country on Colombian networks.

Cons of Using an eSIM

As we've already seen, eSIMs have very few drawbacks and are an excellent option for accessing mobile internet on your Colombian vacation.

However, one disadvantage is the slightly higher upfront cost than physical SIM cards. That said, eSIMs are still comparatively cheap, especially for use in Colombia from abroad. In our opinion, the significantly higher level of comfort and the possibility of having access to the internet immediately upon arrival are worth the extra pennies. Another disadvantage is related to installation, where the process may be unfamiliar to you if you've never installed an eSIM before. However, if you follow the instructions carefully, you'll be fine.

Finally, there's a compatibility issue: not all devices support eSIMs . If your device was released before late 2019, we recommend double-checking on the internet or contacting a representative from an eSIM service to confirm whether your device is compatible before you purchase an eSIM. In general, the following devices will support eSIMs though:

  • iPhone 11 or later
  • iPhone XS, iPhone XR, or iPhone SE
  • iPad 7th generation or later ,
  • Galaxy S20 or later
  • Google Pixel 3 or later
  • and many other devices (see our full list of compatible devices )

Can I Call From Colombia With an eSIM?

Fruits in an indoor market in Los Mártires, Bogotá, Colombia.

Yes, you can call abroad from Colombia with an eSIM , but once again, using your regular network provider and SIM card could result in surprisingly high calling charges at the end of the month (we've personally encountered as high as $4 per minute!). Fortunately, you can call abroad without the high costs, and there are three ways of doing this. We go through each below:

1. Voice-Over-IP (VoIP) With Data

In most cases, eSIM packages are loaded with mobile data, not with minutes or airtime. However, using your data, you can use web-based apps like WhatsApp, Google Meet, Skype, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, FaceTime and others to stay in touch with family and friends abroad while in Colombia.

2. eSIMs With Airtime

Some eSIM services offer talk and text packages alongside normal data packages. These allow you to make direct phone calls or SMSes via local networks in Colombia to your home country for only a slightly higher fee than regular data packages. Not all eSIM services offer this service though, but some, like Wraptel , do.

3. International Calling Apps

If you plan to make calls from Colombia (or anywhere else abroad) fairly regularly, then your most reliable and affordable option will be to use a third-party app. In our opinion, Rebtel is by far the best service out there , offering low rates and providing you with local Colombian phone numbers with which you can make calls abroad as though they were completely domestic.

Although it's popular, we typically don't recommend using Google Fi for this purpose unless you plan to go back and forth from the United States regularly (since Google Fi is only available to Americans and will not work if you spend over 90 days abroad yearly). In general, Rebtel's rates are more affordable than Google Fi's too. Look at our in-depth review to learn more about our first-hand experience with Google Fi.

Recap: All About eSIMs in Colombia

A view over the city skyline at night in Medellín, Colombia.

Are you planning a trip to Colombia, and do you have a modern smartphone? Then, you should certainly at least consider getting an eSIM. In our opinion, they offer almost nothing but advantages and are generally far superior to using your regular SIM card.

You should compare the available options to find the right provider for eSIMs in Colombia. As we've seen, we recommend looking primarily at the network provider and the price. Airalo, Holafly or possibly Yesim are the best choices, depending on how long you want to stay in Colombia. To recap, here are what each can offer you:

  • Airalo : Best eSIM for Colombia overall,
  • Holafly : Best eSIM for unlimited data in Colombia,
  • Yesim : Good alternative to Airalo.
  • Wraptel : Best eSIM for airtime and SMSes.
  • Rebtel : Best calling service for international calls.

FAQ About The Best eSIM For Colombia

Yes, eSIMs are safe to use in Colombia. That's because commercial eSIM technology adheres to international security and encryption standards to store and securely access your mobile network information.

Generally, yes, but it depends on your individual needs. While eSIMs offer the advantage of remotely purchasing a SIM before you travel, making them convenient for frequent travellers, physical SIMs might still be preferable for you if you have an older smartphone model, for example.

No, eSIMs generally aren't free, with the cost in Colombia varying based on mobile service providers and their pricing plans. However, you can generally expect to pay upwards of $8 to purchase an eSIM with a minimal data package for Colombia.

Yes, you can use an eSIM on a locked phone, provided your phone is compatible with eSIM technology.

Yes, an eSIM can generally be used for calling from Colombia, especially when paired with voice-over-IP services that connect to the internet, like WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Google Messenger. If you'd like to call or SMS, consider finding an eSIM deal that includes airtime or minutes or use a service like Rebtel , which, for a tiny fee, provides you with a local number in place of your overseas contact's foreign number, making calling abroad significantly cheaper.

Best eSim for Colombia (Stay Connected Anywhere)

Want to get an eSim for an upcoming trip to Colombia? You’ve come to the right place because this detailed guide will tell you everything you need to know about the best Colombia eSim providers.

At A Glance: Best eSim for Colombia

  • BEST SHORT-TERM DATA PACKS Airalo
  • BEST VARIETY OF REGIONAL PLANS Flexiroam
  • BEST UNLIMITED DATA PLAN Maya Mobile

I’ve listed the available data plans from all the most popular eSim providers, and they include anywhere from 500 MB to unlimited eSim data. Whether you’re staying in the country for a few days or a few months, you’ll see at least a couple of embedded sim plans that are just right for you!

ESIM Product Comparison

Airalo is a popular eSim provider known for affordable data plans. They’re not the cheapest option out of the bunch for Colombia, but their Hartonet plans are worth considering if you’re looking for short-term plans or just data packs with a smaller allowance:

  • 1 GB / 7 Days for $8
  • 2 GB / 15 Days for $15
  • 3 GB / 30 Days for $21
  • 5 GB / 30 Days for $32.5

All of Airalo’s Colombia eSims connect to the Movistar Colombia network. This provider offers the fastest Internet in Colombia and it has excellent 4G LTE coverage throughout the country.

Airalo eSims are easy to top up, should you need to purchase more data. You can top-up the eSim on their website or through the Airalo app, which is why I would recommend going with a smaller data pack first.

Additionally, Airalo also offers a more expensive regional eSim plan for South America , and it’s an option worth considering if you have plans to travel outside Colombia.

  • Good value for money
  • Access to Movistar network
  • No plans larger than 5 GB

Nomad is an international eSim provider with mobile data eSim plans for many countries in the world. While they offer eSims for Colombia, the data packs from Nomad aren’t necessarily great value for money because they’re among the priciest options out of the bunch:

  • 1 GB / 7 Days for $25
  • 3 GB / 30 Days for $40
  • 5 GB / 30 Days for $45

Airalo, Maya Mobile , and Flexiroam all offer more affordable data plans than Nomad, so they’re not even among the top three providers for Colombia. Also, all the eSims are operated by Truphone, which is an international network provider.

Truphone partners with local network operators, but there’s no information on which local providers they partner with in Colombia.

  • Short-term data packs
  • Trusted provider

Holafly is an eSim provider best known for unlimited data plans, which they offer for most worldwide countries. Unfortunately, Colombia isn’t one of the destinations where the provider is able to offer unlimited data. Instead, Holafly only has one data pack for Colombia and it’s 6 GB / 15 Days for $44.

That’s fairly expensive, considering that you can purchase the same amount of data from Airalo for less money, and have the eSim valid for more than a month. Holafly eSims access the Internet through the Colombia Móvil network, which is only the third largest provider in the country.

Also, it’s worth noting that Holafly doesn’t allow hotspots or tethering with their eSims, so you won’t be able to share your data with fellow travelers. In my opinion, the cons outweigh the pros, and I wouldn’t recommend Holafly for a Colombia eSim.

  • Generous data allowance
  • Trusted eSim provider
  • Expensive plan
  • Data sharing is not allowed

Flexiroam is one of the best eSim providers for countries in Latin America. They don’t have any single-country plans for Colombia, but they do have more than a dozen plans that offer coverage in 12 countries in South America, Colombia included:

  • 500 MB / 3 Days for $3
  • 1 GB / 3 Days for $6
  • 1 GB / 8 Days for $6.5
  • 1 GB / 15 Days for $7
  • 3 GB / 8 Days for $17
  • 3 GB / 15 Days for $17.50
  • 5 GB / 15 Days for $28
  • 5 GB / 24 Days for $29
  • 7 GB / 15 Days for $40
  • 7 GB / 24 Days for $41
  • 10 GB / 24 Days for $56
  • 20 GB / 30 Days for $100
  • 50 GB / 90 Days for $200

The eSims from this provider connect to the network with the strongest signal, so you should have excellent coverage and a stable connection throughout Colombia. If you were hoping to get a regional data plan for South America, this is by far the best provider.

It’s worth noting that Colombia is also included in the regional Americas plan, as well as Flexiroam’s Global plan. Both of those are significantly more expensive than Latin American plans, and they’re not worth considering if you’re staying only on the southern continent.

  • Cheapest data plans
  • Best value for money
  • Coverage in 12 South American countries
  • No individual plans for Colombia

Maya Mobile

Maya Mobile is one of the best providers for a Colombia eSim. The provider offers 5 different eSim plans for Colombia, as well as an unlimited data plan for the entire Latin America region. The Maya Mobile plans are:

  • 1 GB / 30 Days for $8
  • 3 GB / 30 Days for $18
  • 5 GB / 30 Days for $28
  • 10 GB / 30 Days for $54
  • Unlimited Data / 30 Days for $129
  • Unlimited Data (Latin America) 30 Days for $129

A Maya Mobile eSim provides you with access to Movistar and Tigo mobile networks, so you should have a stable Internet connection everywhere in the country. The eSim plans from this provider are some of the cheapest you can buy, so they’re definitely worth considering if you want a data pack with a smaller allowance. Especially because all their eSims are valid for 30 days, which is longer than what most other providers offer.

Additionally, Maya Mobile is the only provider that offers an unlimited data plan for Colombia. There aren’t any restrictions on data sharing, so you can split the cost of the eSim with your fellow travelers and set up a hotspot so that everyone in your party has Internet access.

  • Great value for money
  • Access to two network operators
  • Unlimited data plans
  • Only long-term data plans

GigSky is an international eSim provider with regional plans for South America. They don’t offer an individual plan for just Colombia, and their regional plan offers coverage in 9 different South American countries. GigSky’s eSim plans for this region are:

  • 1 GB / 7 Days for $8.99
  • 5 GB / 30 Days for $39.99
  • 10 GB / 30 Days for $74.99
  • 50 GB / 90 Days for $349.99

This is only the second provider to offer a 50 GB plan for Colombia, so it’s worth considering if you need a large data allowance for your trip to the region. However, I must point out that Flexiroam offers the same mobile data allowance at a much better price, plus they include coverage in more countries. GigSky’s mobile data plans for Colombia are among the priciest, and I wouldn’t recommend them instead of Flexiroam, Maya Mobile , or even Airalo.

  • Large data packs
  • Regional coverage (9 countries)

Benefits of Getting an eSim in Colombia

The main benefit of having an eSim in Colombia is that you can access the Internet whenever and wherever you want, without paying for any data roaming charges. There’s also the fact that you can purchase an eSim before your trip and then just activate it once you arrive in the country, eliminating the need to walk around a foreign city and look for a place where you can purchase a traditional sim card.

There are also pros to purchasing an eSim as opposed to a physical sim card. It’s more convenient, you can’t really lose it, and you don’t have to worry about packing tools or where you’re going to keep your original sim card while you’re using a local eSim. Colombia has pretty good eSim coverage, and it’s certainly one of the most convenient ways to have Internet access while traveling the country.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSims in Colombia

Claro is one of the best local providers in Colombia. They offer eSims to all their existing customers, but you will need to purchase a physical sim card first and then go to a Claro store and ask to have all your data transferred to an eSim. Consider doing this if your phone supports physical sim cards because Claro prepaid plans are incredibly cheap. You can get 3 GB of mobile data for less than $1.5, and 10 GB for around $3.

Movistar is a popular provider in Colombia with a wide variety of prepaid packages. This provider offers eSims, but just like with Claro, you need to purchase a physical sim card first and ask them to transfer your data to a virtual sim card. It’s worth it because Movistar’s prepaid plans are ridiculously cheap – you can get unlimited data for 15 days for as little as $6.1.

Devices Compatible with eSim in Colombia

All the devices that support eSim technology are compatible with eSims in Colombia. This includes all Apple phones from the iPhone XS and later, third-generation Google Pixel devices and newer, and Samsung Galaxy S devices from the S20 onwards. Some smartwatches, tablets, laptops, and other Android phones are compatible with eSims, and it’s usually best to double-check if you’re not sure if your device supports embedded sim card technology.

You can dial *#06# to check if your phone supports eSims. After you dial the number, you will see a list of unique serial numbers for your cell phone. An EID number indicates that your device supports eSims.

Data Needed When Traveling to Colombia

How much data you need for a trip to Colombia depends on your data usage habits and the length of your trip. A data allowance of up to 3 GB can be enough for trips up to two weeks, and approximately 5 GB for a trip of up to a month. But that’s only if you monitor your data usage, and use mobile data only when you want to check maps directions and some social media.

Avoid streaming videos and the smaller data packs will get you through your trip. On the other hand, if you want to use mobile data more liberally, you want to work, or you want to set up a hotspot and share the Internet connection with your friends, look into data packs that include 5-20 GB. Unlimited data packs are also a great option, especially for travelers on business trips or those who are traveling in larger groups.

Understanding eSIM Technology and its Benefits

The advent of eSIM technology has brought about a revolution in the way we connect during our travels. In case you’re wondering, an eSIM – short for electronic SIM card , is a virtual version of the traditional physical SIM card. The beauty of it is that it eliminates the need for physical SIM cards entirely or dealing with regional telecom providers while traveling abroad. In terms of convenience and flexibility offered, nothing beats an eSIM when it comes to international roaming. This latest innovation in telecommunications technology allows travelers to switch between networks without having to replace or insert a new SIM card every time. However, do bear in mind that not all smartphones support this feature as yet. It’s therefore always prudent to check your device compatibility before jumping into the eSIM activation process .

Top Recommended eSIMs for Colombia: Airalo, Holafly and Nomad

When it comes to recommendations on the best esim for Colombia , research suggests that Airalo, Holafly and Nomad are your top three contenders. Airalo has earned its position at the very top because of its simplicity, practicality and affordability – qualities every globe trotter appreciates. What’s more, Airalo boasts an extensive network spread across over 190 countries! Holafly isn’t far behind either with its comprehensive services inclusive of 24/7 customer support in multiple languages and unlimited data plans. Nomad eSim has also earnt high praise from users thanks to its lightning-fast connection speeds with no roaming charges. This makes Nomad a particular favorite among cost-conscious travelers.

Exploring Other Promising Options: Alosim and Maya Mobile

While it’s easy to be swayed by all the fanfare around the three eSIM giants, we should also consider two other promising contenders: Alosim and Maya Mobile. These not-so-famous names have been making waves in their own right, with commendable coverage scope and user reviews. Airalo also offers prepaid data plans that range from 1GB to 20GB.

Local Carriers Providing Coverage in Colombia: Claro, Avantel, Movistar and Tigo

Now that I think about it, if you’re planning a trip solely within Colombia, local may be the way to go. Colombia telecom providers such as Claro, Avantel, Movistar and Tigo offer some great eSIM options. It could work out cheaper for you to opt for a local eSIM specific to Colombia.

Considering Cost-Effectiveness: Physical SIM Cards vs eSIMs

In any case, some users suggest an even more cost-effective route – buying a physical SIM card upon arrival. For instance, Tigo reportedly offers a prepaid plan priced at just $0.50 per GB. However All things considered , it’s worth noting that while physical SIM cards may be cheaper upfront the long-term benefits of eSIMs (convenience being chief among them) are hard to ignore.

This article will explain why an eSIM is the most suitable SIM card for Colombia for tourists and travellers alike. It will benefit you in numerous ways.

Avoid the hassle of changing out those tiny SIM cards in your device, and switch to eSIM instead! Thanks to technology, eSIM has made our travelling lives so much easier.

eSIM Colombia is the best choice; let me explain why:

Table of Contents

What is an eSIM?

eSIM is a digital version of your material SIM card already encrypted in your phone or device. An eSIM enables you to activate a cellular plan from a phone carrier without using a material SIM.

Getting an eSIM is effortless; download the eSIM or data profiles to your device.

Most phones and devices already contain a microchip that allows you to install multiple eSIM profiles. It’s comparable to having several physical SIM cards with phone numbers and data packs loaded into your device simultaneously.

Colombia eSIM – Small or large data pack?

How long you wish to spend in Colombia and whether you will use wifi when available will determine which eSIM data plan you should choose.

If you plan to use wifi during your time in Colombia (cafes and hotels usually offer this option at no additional charge), then you should go with the small plan, 1GB for $8 , valid for 7 days, or the 2GB for $15 eSIM , valid for 15 days.

And, if you mainly rely on phone coverage for your data, buy the largest plan that includes more data, the 5GB eSIM for $32.50 , valid for 30 days.

How to Download an eSIM for Colombia

eSIM Colombia - Girl with Airalo Plans on phone

Buying a SIM card in Colombia is straightforward (and affordable). The eSIM data plans are easy to download to your device.

Download  the Airalo app , purchase the most suitable data pack for Colombia from this list , and follow the steps to activate the eSIM just before you arrive in Colombia.

Note:  The eSIM validity data starts from the date of activation. So, you can purchase the eSIM beforehand but wait to activate it until just before you arrive in the country .

Important:  Your device must be compatible with eSIM. Please  check this list to see if your device supports eSIM   before purchasing any Airalo eSIM.

Here are a Few Tips:

  • Before you arrive in Colombia, switch from your current mobile provider to the Colombian eSIM provider. Don’t worry; a step-by-step guide is available to help you during installation.
  • Once your eSIM card Colombia is activated, I recommend you turn off data for all apps you don’t use, including those that can use a lot of data. Find this in the ‘settings’ tab on your device. Apps such as Netflix, Instagram, and YouTube will eat up your data quickly, so only access that once you reach your hotel and access the complimentary wifi.
  • And, if you want the freedom to instantly send those videos home to friends and family of the highlights of your Guatape Tour , just outside of Medellin or the incredible food you enjoyed on that street food tour of Cartegena , Colombia eSIM works like a treat.

And, if you use your data quicker than planned in Colombia, it’s easy to get more. Open your  Airalo App  and top up with more data; simple.

It’s essential to add that Airalo sends you an alert message when you’re running low on data, reminding you to buy more. A helpful feature, wouldn’t you agree?

Is eSIM plans the cheapest Colombia SIM cards?

Once you arrive in Colombia, of course, you still have the option to purchase a physical SIM card at any major airport or phone store.

A local SIM will allow you to call and send local texts in Colombia. And, depending on the plan you purchase, it will also give you access to local calling rates and data.

Many local carriers in Colombia claim to have the best sim card in Colombia, the most reliable connection, etc. And, with so many phone plans and carriers, prices tend to change regularly.

Consequently, you will find that the price comparison for eSIM Colombia is highly competitive with a physical SIM card.

You can choose one of Colombia’s local physical SIM cards and try and arrange one once you arrive, or switch to eSIM and be ready for your well-earned vacation time!

What we like most about buying an eSIM is its affordability, no hassle, and zero fuss. And we love that you get to keep your original number.

Physical Sim vs eSIM

I explain in this post why  eSIM for all international travel  is my only choice for staying connected worldwide.

I used to be one of those travellers, but since switching to eSIM and enjoying the many pros (which far outweigh the cons), I can’t imagine returning to physical SIM cards now.

It’s a reasonable question that many people who travel regularly have asked.  “Which is better, physical sim or eSIM?”

Keep your initial SIM card in your phone

Another perk of downloading an eSIM for Colombia is that you don’t need to remove your physical SIM card from your phone. An eSIM is virtual, so it’s all embedded inside your device; it’s fantastic.

We adore technology!

It’s relevant news because you avoid the risk of losing your tiny SIM card (as it stays inside your device), and it also means you can receive your messages from home.

A bonus for eSIM users is that you don’t need to change your original mobile phone number; it stays the same. Convenient, especially when connecting with family and friends back home, as they don’t have to try and message you on a foreign number.

Oh, and once you buy an eSIM, you can navigate the Airalo app in English. So it’s much easier than decoding the Spanish language on your device.

So there you have it – The Airalo Colombia eSIM is a wise choice for staying connected in this country.

Comparison of eSIMs for a trip to Colombia

Before deciding on any eSIM company, it is recommended to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each of them to know which one best suits our needs. That’s why we have prepared this table with all the essential information about Holafly, Maya Mobile, Airalo and Truephone to help you choose. We’ll delve into each eSIM brand in more depth below so you won’t be missing any of the information.

1. Holafly, eSIM with 24/7 customer support for Colombia

Holafly is one of the best options to buy eSIM cards and travel without any worries, as it has a 24/7 customer service in Spanish, English, German, French, Italian and Japanese that responds in less than a minute by chat or WhatsApp. It is also one of the most reliable eSIM companies today with the best rating, scoring 4.6 on Trustpilot.

At Holafly you can find its eSIM plan for Colombia of 15 days with 6GB for 47€.

In addition, it is important to note that Holafly has an eSIM card data plan for Latin America that covers 15 countries , including Colombia. So, if you plan to take a trip across several countries on the subcontinent, you won’t have to worry about signing up for a different data plan for each country. The features in terms of price, days, amount of GB, installation, etc. are exactly the same as those of the plan for Colombia .

The Holafly eSIM cards can be installed easily by scanning the QR code that you will receive by email once you have completed the purchase. The installation can also be done manually without the need for a computer, simply writing a code in the settings of your mobile that you can consult in the mail or in your App, which is very convenient to control the duration of the data plan.

eSIM Colombia

After analyzing and testing Holafly eSIM cards, Passporter can confirm that, despite being one of the most expensive, they are very worthwhile as they allow worry-free travel thanks to their impeccable customer service, the most efficient of all the eSIMs we have tested. Here we leave you this ranking where we evaluate from 1 to 5 all the features of the Holafly eSIM cards for Colombia based on our experience.

In this post you can read about our experience with Holafly eSIM cards and some users’ opinions: Our review of Holafly eSIM: is it worth it?

2. Maya Mobile, 30-day data plans for your trip to Colombia

This company offers eSIM card plans for 30 days in Latin America including Colombia and 15 other countries. In total it has 5 packages of 1GB, 3GB, 5GB, 10GB and another with unlimited GB. The plans with unlimited GB of Maya Mobile are relative as they have a speed limit of 5Mbp, which drops to 1Mbps after having used 30GB. The price ranges from €9 to €119.

eSIM Colombia

Maya Mobile stands out like Holafly for its quick and simple installation and contracting process, through a QR code sent by email. In addition, it has a 100% refund policy in case the data does not work, although this is rare since they have at least two data providers in each country where they offer their services.

In the case of Maya Mobile we consider it a disadvantage their plans being very inflexible and only having a duration of 30 days. In Trustpilot you can see that the brand has an average score of 4.4, but there are hardly any comments. Here the table with the score for each of the features of their eSIM cards.

3. Airalo and their eSIM cards in Colombia

This company, founded in Singapore in 2019 by Turkish entrepreneurs Abraham Burak and Ahmet Bahadir Özdemir, was one of the first to offer these services, and has a wide coverage of countries where they offer eSIM cards.

eSIM Colombia

The Airalo eSIM card data plans for Colombia have a duration of 7, 15 and 30 days, and prices range from 7,34€ – 29,8€. The truth is that Airalo is one of the companies with the lowest prices on the market, which can be worth it if you do not plan to use the internet connection more than at specific times of your trip. However, if you don’t want to worry about running out of data, this is not the company for you. Moreover, their customer support takes a long time to respond and is only in English.

We should add that Airalo has one of the lowest ratings on Trustpilot, with only a 3,4 score, compared to other companies such as Holafly, with a 4,5 score.

Here you have the ranking of each aspect of Airalo and in this post you can also read about our opinion of the brand: Our review of Airalo eSIM: is it worth it?

4. Ubigi and their eSIM cards for Colombia

Ubigi offers only few data plans with 4 plans of 30 days with 500MG, 2 plans of 1GB (one of them includes USA) or 3GB; and 1 plan of 1 day of 500MB. As you can see, none of them has a lot of GB and the prices range from 12€ (one day) to 39€. On the other hand, it offers a plan of 5GB per month for unlimited time that costs 68€ per month and is valid worldwide.

Despite that, one of Ubigi’s positive aspects is its good reputation, with a 4,3 rating on Truspilot. And something curious about its eSIM cards is that they also work for smart cars including some models of Jaguar, Fiat, Land Rover, Alfa Romeo or Jeep .

eSIM Colombia

In this table you can see how we evaluate each feature of Ubigi’s eSIM cards. And if you want to know our opinion about Ubigi eSIMs, check out this post: Our review of Ubigi eSIM: is it worth it?

5. Truphone, eSIM with the worst score on Trustpilot

Truphone is a UK company that offers eSIM cards to connect to the internet in over 160 countries. It was a pioneer in the industry and the first global operator to launch eSIM for iPad, Apple Watch and Google Pixel devices . In addition, it has been a technology partner of Apple since 2016, which gives it a great competitive advantage and makes it easier to install eSIMs on their devices.

According to reviews from over a hundred TruPhone customers on Trustpilot, their customer service leaves a lot to be desired, and the company’s final rating is a 2/5. These are the plans it offers:

The installation and activation processes are done through the App , so you will not need to scan any QR code. Just keep in mind that you will need internet to perform the operation. In addition, the plans cannot be purchased through the web, it is only possible to do it from the app that you have to install on your phone or iPad.

eSIM Colombia

Our conclusion about TruPhone is that it has important advantages and disadvantages to consider before signing up for its plans. On the one hand, it is a quite cheap company which can be positive for smaller budgets. But on the other hand, its technical service is unreliable and it is not at all certain that they will solve the problem in an emergency.

If you want to know more about our experience with Truphone eSIM cards and the opinions of other users visit this post: Our review of Truphone eSIM: is it worth it?

Conclusion: what is the best eSIM for Colombia

After this assessment, we came to the conclusion that price is not the only important factor to consider when contracting an eSIM for a trip to Colombia or anywhere in the world. The number of days you are going to travel, and therefore the number of days when you will need connection, the amount of data and the customer support, are other factors that can determine which eSIM is best suited to your trip.

eSIM Colombia

Depending on your budget and the use you are going to give to the internet connection, you will probably be better off with one plan or another, but what is always a safe bet is to opt for a technical service available 24/7 and in your language. Therefore, we highlight Holafly as a reliable option that will ensure that your connection and your trip will always go smoothly. This is confirmed by thousands of positive customer reviews and a Trustpilot score of 4.6.

We know it can be difficult to calculate how many GB you will need during your trip, so here’s a table so you can calculate it based on what you normally use. Easy and hassle free!

Other options to have internet o your trip to Colombia

If your cell phone is not compatible with eSIM cards or you want to investigate other ways to have internet on your trip to Colombia, keep reading, as below we show you some alternatives to this card.

1. SIM cards

SIM cards are one of the most widespread options today, but that does not imply that they are the best option because as we show below they have quite a few drawbacks.

The main operators offering SIM cards in Colombia are Singtel, StarHub and M1 . All of them have very good coverage and offer a wide variety of data plans with different durations and GB, ranging from 2GB to 30GB . The prices range from €10 to €20.

SIM cards can be purchased at the airport as well as in the shopping areas, but keep in mind that in these places, being touristy, they are more expensive. If you can, buy it online before you set out on your trip.

internet abroad with Holafly

2. Rent a Pocket WiFi

Another alternative for connecting to the Internet in Colombia is to rent a Pocket WiFi, that is, a portable router that you can use to access the Internet wherever you go.

In Colombia there are several brands that rent pocket Wi-Fi, such as Travel Wifi or Wifivox . The rental price ranges from €4 to €15 per day, and Travel Wifi also offers the option to buy it at a price starting from €160.

It should be noted that to the original rental price must be added shipping costs and extras, such as car charger, extra battery or insurance.

This option is interesting when we only need internet in a very specific space, for long periods of time or when we travel with more people, since everyone can benefit from the connection and share the costs. In general, the same portable router can connect between 5 and 10 people and has an autonomy of about 6 to 12 hours, so you will have to charge it every day of your trip.

3. Search for free WiFi networks in Colombia

As you can imagine, this is the cheapest option. However, as you may already know, it is also the most frustrating alternative in most cases. Slow connection, time limit or eternal forms that promise WIFI after you submit all your data.

This is an option that should be used with caution for security reasons. Public WiFi hotspots are very vulnerable to hacks or cyberattacks, providing access to private data. It is therefore recommended to spend as little time as possible connected, use it for specific queries and do not expose your personal data.

These are some places where you can find WiFi on your trip to Colombia in case of a need: airports, museums, subway, parks, cafes, restaurants and hotels. There are also APPs that tell you where to find WiFi hotspots, as well as Facebook, which also offers this service.

4. Activate roaming for Colombia

One of the options that is losing more and more popularity due to its high costs is roaming, also known as data roaming. It is the simplest option as you can receive calls and connect to the Internet without having to install anything or change your phone number, however, the bills are very high.

If you travel from Spain, for example, there are several companies that offer roaming service abroad. Some examples are Movistar, Jazztel, Yoigo, Vodafone or Orange . Before embarking on a trip it is recommended to ask your current carrier the cost of roaming to compare to other services such as eSIM cards. Generally the MB in Colombia Roaming ranges between 6€ and 12€ . Think that Instagram consumes between 0.12GB – 0.18GB per hour of use.

If in the end you decide to use another option, remember to turn off data roaming on your cell phones or change the main line in the case of using an eSIM.

Frequently asked questions about eSIM cards in Colombia

Most models of popular brands such as Apple, Samsung, Motorola, Huawei or Google are supported as long as they are recent models. Several iPads are also compatible. However, it is best to consult the website of each provider, where they will indicate all the compatible models.

eSIM cards allow you to have internet on your cell phone when you travel abroad without having to remove your regular SIM card, as is the case with SIM cards. This is possible thanks to a chip that is incorporated in the latest generation of cell phones. The purchase of the eSIM data plan can be done through the web or the App of some brands. Choose your destination, the duration and the gigabytes of the data plan and pay securely.

The installation and activation of the eSIM is a really easy procedure that will only take a few minutes. Once you have verified that your cell phone is compatible with the product and chosen the data plan that best suits your needs, go to the mobile data settings on your smartphone and select “add data plan”. Then the camera will open so you can scan the QR code that you will have received in the mail after the purchase. The installation and activation of your card will then begin. This process must be carried out with an internet connection, so it is recommended to do it before starting the trip or as soon as you arrive at the hotel.

SIM cards can be purchased in physical stores or online, with delivery times ranging from 48 to 72 hours. There are also companies that offer same-day express shipping.

Most carriers offer packages with data limits. Holafly , unlike the rest, offers a wide variety of unlimited data packages.

To activate the eSIM card it is necessary to have internet connection, so it is recommended to do it before starting your trip.

Data packages usually last for weeks or months, however, there are providers such as Holafly that offer more flexible packages between 5 days and 3 months.

Unlimited data plans do not normally allow data sharing, but plans with a specific number of GBs included do.

The data of the unlimited plans is really unlimited. Note in any case that local mobile operators may temporarily reduce the speed if you make a very intensive use of applications such as Netflix or Youtube. These limits are more intended to avoid network saturation by a few users.

Holafly is a Spanish company launched in 2018 that you can trust, it has been tested by more than 400,000 customers, travel blogs and Youtubers. Holafly markets eSIMs since 2019.

Holafly has more than 10,000 positive experiences published on Trustpilot, with an “Excellent” rating and 4.6 average score.

Maya is owned by a U.S. company, Maya Virtual Inc. Reviews of Maya on Truspilot are good, with an average score of 4.5.

Truphone is a UK company and Google technology partner. On Trustpilot they have a score of 3.1.

Airalo is a company founded in Singapore and owned by Airgsm Pte Ltd. Airalo’s Trustpilot rating is 3.4.

Sightseeing

These are 5 of the top sites to visit in Colombia:

Cartagena de Indias is one of the oldest cities in Colombia. Founded in 1533, Cartagena is a well-preserved touristic site, with its historic walled center being protected by UNESCO since 1984. With tropical weather and wonderful beaches, the city is a great vacation destination.

Fuerte San Felipe de Barajas, built by the Spanish in 1657 as a defensive fortress, is considered one of the seven Colombian wonders. Torre del Reloj (Watch Tower) is a 30 m-high beautiful monument from the early 17th century. Do not miss Las Bovedas, a colonial construction originally used as a refuge for Spanish troops, and now home to art galleries and bars. Enjoy Cartagena´s nightlife by visiting Plaza de Santo Domingo, with plenty of cafes and restaurants, along with colorful street musicians.

In 2021, Medellin was declared a Special District of Science, Technology, and Innovation. Founded in 1616, the City of Flowers, as Medellin is known, has developed a system of cable cars connecting the valley where is set, to the hills around.

Medellin is a great touristic site, offering plenty of interesting places worth visiting. The Antioquia Museum holds national and international exhibitions, along with paints and sculptures by Fernando Botero. Medellin Botanic Garden is home to over 1,000 species of flora, and it is a center for environmental education. Botero Plaza is a park open in 2004, showing several artworks donated by Colombian artists, including 23 sculptures. Scientific Parque Explora welcomes the whole family with interactive experiences.

Eje Cafetero

Eje Cafetero (Coffee Axis) is a Colombian region known for its coffee great production, in a country placed among the top coffee producers in the world. The axis includes the Departments of Risaralda, Caldas, and Quindio, along with sectors of Tolima, Antioquia, and Valle del Cauca. Several coffee plantations are welcoming visitors for guided tours, showing the whole process, from collecting the coffee bean, roasting it, grinding it, and turning it into a nice and hot cup of coffee you can enjoy right there.

The town of Salento, west of Bogota, is a great place to base yourself, to visit not only the nearby plantations but the snowy heights of Los Nevados National Park, as well.

The only way to arrive at Leticia, the capital of the Amazonas Department, is by plane from Bogota. This town is a port on the impressive Amazonas River, and it is also on the Colombian border with Brazil and Peru. Leticia is surrounded by mostly impenetrable jungles but is home to several parks and gardens.

Parque Santander shows endemic vegetation, and it is located in front of the Amazonas River. Parque Mundo Amazonico offers an aquarium, aside from natural trails. Do not miss Victoria Botanic Garden, with the majestic flower Victoria Regia, and the curious Squirrel Monkey.

Bogota is one of South America’s most beautiful capitals. The city offers visitors lovely Equatorial-mountainous weather due to its geographical altitude (2,600 m). Founded in 1838, Bogota is a combination of colonial attraction and modern architecture.

Colombia National Museum, since 1823, holds national and international art, history, and archeology expositions. The historic center of Bogota, La Candelaria, is home to Museo Botero, with works donated by the artist; and the Museum of Gold, showing over 30,000 Pre-Columbian pieces of gold.

The Metropolitan Cathedral, from the 19th century, and San Francisco Church, built in the 16th century, show incredible architecture.

What you should know about the eSIM card Colombia

The first thing to know about virtual SIM card technology, better known as eSIM, is that despite being a useful and convenient option for travelers , currently, many mobile devices do not have the necessary functions and tools built-in to run an eSIM. Therefore, keep in mind the following requirements when purchasing and installing one of these virtual cards:

  • You must have a cellphone compatible with eSIM technology . In addition to that, check that your mobile is supported by the operator or eSIM card provider you are contacting.
  • On the other hand, it is essential to have an email address to register and receive your eSIM.
  • Remember that you must have an internet connection to scan the QR code or installation code to download your eSIM profile from the provider’s servers.
  • Some providers will ask you to install their App to download the eSIM.

Comparison of eSIM providers for Colombia

What you should know about esim cards for traveling to colombia.

To better understand everything about eSIM cards, here are some crucial features you should know to have the best time on your trip to Colombia. In the same way, you can know the differences between these virtual SIM cards and the traditional physical ones.

  • Most eSIM cards do not offer analog calls, only data. For voice communication, you can use Apps like Skype or WhatsApp.
  • Some eSIM cards will set up an automatic APN for you.
  • With your iPhone dual SIM, you can keep your local SIM without changing it when you travel to Colombia. Remember to configure your iPhone to avoid surprise bills.
  • eSIMs can only be installed once, so if you are experiencing problems with your virtual card, the best thing to do is to contact your eSIM provider. We recommend that you do not remove it.
  • Some eSIMs allow you to share data.
  • You can add several data plans on your iPhone. This depends on the available memory, although using one at a time is possible.

eSIM coverage for traveling to Colombia

Another thing you should take into account when purchasing or choosing an eSIM is to know the coverage it offers. Sometimes, a cheap eSIM card may not provide good coverage at your destination.

Therefore, keep in mind that the best eSIMs are those that have the most significant number of roaming agreements in Colombia. In this case, the carriers with coverage in the coffee-growing country are Claro, Avantel, Movistar, and Tigo.

Below, we share with you the coverage map of each of these operators so that you can get an idea of the extension of each of these servers in Colombia.

In Colombia, two national companies currently offer Colombian residents the option of having or changing their traditional SIM card to an eSIM . Also, remember that users who opt for this alternative and can activate a plan with an eSIM must comply with specific requirements and carry out the procedures stipulated by these carriers.

Among the companies Claro, Tigo, Movistar, Wom, Avantel, Virgin, ETB, Flash Mobile, and Móvil Éxito; those that offer Colombian residents the possibility of acquiring or changing the physical chip to an eSIM are:

eSIM Claro Colombia

Claro Colombia’s eSIM is currently only compatible with Apple Watch. That means that you will not yet be able to replace your physical card with the eSIM. The operation of the eSIM on Apple Watch allows you to continue using your smartwatch without the need to be near the iPhone.

It is important for you to know that the Huawei P40 Mini and Huawei P40 Pro Plus do not support eSIM. Huawei phones that are dual SIM can only have 2 cards in operation at the same time. This means that if you activate eSIM, the physical slot 2 will be deactivated.

Where to get the Movistar Colombia eSIM?

The Movistar Colombia eSIM is available at customer service centers or physical branches. It is available for prepaid, control and postpaid customers . In the experience center they will give you a printed QR code, which you must scan with your compatible cell phone. The activation path is very similar if you do it on iPhone, Samsung or Huawei.

How to activate the Movistar Colombia eSIM on my iPhone?

Once you have the printed QR code in your hands, you just need to scan it to install and activate the Movistar Colombia eSIM. It is very important that you are connected to the internet (WiFi or cellular data) to activate your eSIM. After checking the above, follow these steps:

  • Go to Settings > Mobile Data
  • Select the Add data plan option
  • Your cell phone camera will now be activated.
  • Scan the QR code
  • Your phone will recognize the eSIM profile for you to download.
  • Accept and that’s it, in a few minutes it will be ready.
  • Your cell phone will now have two network indicators.

It is not necessary to present a passport; some providers do require your address. This applies only for the tourist eSIM. Not for Claro or Movistar eSIM, who will ask for your information.

After installing the virtual SIM profile you must choose it as the default cellular data medium, turn on data and roaming and your virtual SIM should be working.

Yes, just like physical cards, virtual SIM cards also have an expiration date.

The days start counting from the moment you activate your eSIM by scanning the QR code on your phone.

Cell phones compatible with eSIM Colombia are increasing every day. Remember that if you reside in a European or Latin country and plan to travel to Colombia, you must carry a cell phone compatible with both eSIM and its bands, because if you do not, you will be left without service in this country. You will be forced to rent or buy a new cell phone. These are the cell phones on which you will be able to install and activate an eSIM Colombia. Make sure first that the eSIM provider supports it .

The eSIM is the evolution of traditional SIM cards. The eSIM works thanks to a chip inserted inside the cell phone, which allows storing and configuring the profile. To learn more we encourage you to read: what is eSIM and how does it work?

Quick Summary: Best eSIM for Colombia

As a home base of ours, we’ve worked our way through the travel eSIMs available to find the best eSIM for Colombia. We think that Airalo offers the best mix of speeds, signal and competitive prices. GigSky comes in a close second, offering slightly cheaper, but slightly slower plans than Airalo. In third place, we have Saily , with an all-round decent offering.

The best of the rest

AloSIM – Reasonable, middle of the road prices with reasonable speeds to boot. Signal on Movistar is strong.

Instabridge – Just below average pricing and fast top-end speed, but poor signal doesn’t allow you to reach top speeds very often.

Nomad – Global plans are cheaper than Colombia-only plans, but still not the cheapest. Reasonable speed and signal

Ubigi – Only 3 plans available in Colombia, all too expensive to recommend.

Holafly – Unlimited data options available but not a great track record with speeds.

MobiMatter – A few additional packages available to those listed above, mostly regional or global

  • Travel eSIM in Colombia: An introduction

Travel eSIM Expert Best eSIM for Colombia introduction image

Known as the “country of beauty”, Colombia offers everything from sunny weather and stunning landscapes to delicious food. It’s a place where the warmth of its people can transform a visit into an experience, making every traveler feel like a part of their extensive, welcoming family.

Colombia is one of our home countries and it’s not a surprise that we spend a lot of time here visiting our family (we’re actually writing this article live from Bogota, in our local Juan Valdez coffee shop). So, whether you’re planning to visit Valle del Cocora or dance the night away in Cartagena, there’s always something new to discover. But to really enjoy Colombia, you need to stay connected, not just for sharing photos, but also for moving around and experiencing the country to the fullest. And don’t forget to try an arepa with tamal for breakfast – it’s a treat! In this guide, we’ll help you find the best travel eSIM for your trip to Colombia, so you can stay online easily and enjoy every bit of your journey.

Now, let’s speak facts. Unfortunately getting online in Colombia is a bit difficult. Like many South American countries, prices per GB of data are higher than the rest of the world. You’ll find that all options are not perfect, for example:

  • Colombia eSIMs are expensive; world or regional plans may even be cheaper, depending on the provider.
  • eSIM speeds are mostly limited to one network (Movistar) on 4G.
  • If you decide against travel eSIMs, buying a physical SIM card can require Colombian ID and bank accounts, alongside a command of the Spanish language and waiting in long lines in stores.

Fortunately we’ve paid the prices, run the numbers and found what we believe to be the sweet spots. Here’s what we think…

  • Best eSIM for Colombia: A breakdown

Airalo-Logo-Thumbnail

The best speeds in Colombia and about average pricing versus the competition. Full review here .

Things to know

  • Prices: 1GB: $8 / 2GB: $15 / 3GB: $21 / 5GB: $32.50
  • Discounts: Yes
  • Services included: Data only
  • 4G or 5G: 4G
  • Cell providers: Movistar
  • Hotspot : Yes
  • Amongst the best speeds in Colombia in our testing
  • Less expensive than some other carriers
  • Strong signal
  • Functional app with strong loyalty scheme
  • Expensive versus elsewhere in the world
  • Not the fastest speeds vs other carriers globally

What you need to know

We think that Airalo just about strikes the right balance between strong performance and decent pricing for South America. Speeds are the best we encountered in our testing and performance in general day to day usage is decent.

In Colombia, Airalo partners with Movistar to offer 4G signal which we generally found to be good. More often than not, we had at least 3 bars of signal throughout our time in Colombia, which usually centers in and around Bogotá and Santa Marta, with trips to other cities as well. Another thing worth mentioning is that Airalo/Movistar were able to maintain decent signal outside of cities too, which is really useful when you need to navigate on road trips, for example. Remember that this is a data only SIM, so no SMS or calls.

Unfortunately as with all Colombian eSIM plans tested, you don’t have the option to switch networks when you require another option to get signal. Unfortunate, but just how it is here.

Airalo is the second fastest travel eSIM provider that we tested in Colombia. We were able to get online and use our phones as normal, including being able to stream, Whatsapp call and generally browse. In our speed tests, we saw download speeds of: 71 Mbps, which is pretty decent. Interestingly, we also saw upload speeds of 31.4 Mbps, not amazingly quick but actually one of the fastest upload speeds we’ve ever seen on a travel eSIM, and that’s all on 4G. We don’t tend to upload much over mobile networks, but it will help your social media content upload just that bit quicker.

Speed Comparison:

Screenshot: Airalo speed test score in Colombia: 71.1 Mbps

Price, value and offers

Airalo pricing breakdown is as follows:

Screenshot: Airalo 1 GB eSIM plan for $8 in Colombia

There’s no getting around the higher price points of data in Colombia versus most of the world. Airalo’s pricing is just about middle of the pack, a lot cheaper than Nomad and Ubigi, slightly more expensive than Gigsky and almost exactly the same as AloSIM.

As always the price per GB decreases the more you purchase so if you think you’ll use it, we think 3 GB or more makes sense as the optimal choice. The 5 GB option at $6.50 per GB is definitely not the cheapest, but in the context of Colombia, we think it’s one of the better options bearing in mind the speed and overall usability.

Airalo often runs discounts, find the latest here .

Airalo’s app is one of our favorites of all travel eSIM apps. It’s simple to use and generally works exactly how it’s supposed to, with quick purchasing and faultless activation. You’re also getting the direct from app install method which is always the simplest in our book.

Anything else?

Airalo has the best loyalty scheme in the market right now, offering up to 10% credit to use on your future purchases, depending on status. This can help bring down your costs in Colombia.

Best value for money in Colombia, but not quite as fast as Airalo.

  • Prices: 1GB: $6.99 / 3GB: $19.99 / 5GB: $29.99 / 10GB: $55.99
  • Discounts: No
  • Solid speed
  • Good signal
  • Good value in Colombia
  • Still expensive versus other countries
  • Sometimes problematic app

We think GigSky offers the best value in Colombia with the cheapest pricing we’ve seen. Speeds aren’t quite as fast as Airalo, so it narrowly loses out on our number one spot.

GigSky is an interesting one in terms of signal as they do not make it clear which network you are actually using, either in your phone settings or on their website, it will only ever say “GigSky”. If we had to guess based on speeds and comparing bars of reception with another eSIM provider, we think that they use Movistar in Colombia.

As with the majority of travel eSIMs in Colombia, signal is generally pretty good in and out of the cities. The only time we have issues is on road trips isolated in the middle of nowhere or underground in parking garages.

With GigSky we were able to browse online with little to no lag on their 4G service. Calling, streaming and more were mostly without hiccups, which is the important thing. GigSky also scored well in our speed tests, coming in third overall, only 6 Mbps slower than Airalo. Upload speeds of 28.1 Mbps are relatively quick and right in line with the other eSIMs tested in Colombia.

Gigsky speed test score in Colombia: 65 Mbps download, 28.1 Mbps upload

GigSky pricing breakdown is as follows:

Screenshot: Gigsky 1 GB eSIM plan for $6.99 in Colombia

GigSky delivers value in Colombia thanks to low prices at almost every level of data. Generally, Gigsky is the second cheapest of all eSIM providers we checked in Colombia after Saily, beaten by a few dollars on their 3 GB and 5 GB plans and the same price for 1 GB. However, their 10 GB price of $55.99 is a full $10 more than Saily.

However with speeds running a whole lot faster than Saily and just a little slower than Airalo, we think that makes for strong value in Colombia. We will be using GigSky on our travels to Colombia again as a result.

Generally the GigSky app is fine, but we have encountered a few issues. The main issue is pages either not loading, which happened to us once, or taking a long time to load, which unfortunately happens more frequently.

This is not ideal, especially when you’re on the move and just looking to get online or check your data usage as quickly as possible.

GigSky has a loyalty scheme that isn’t thoroughly explained, but seems to be 5% of your purchase value as credit to use on future purchases.

Check out their site to stay connected on your travels.

colombia travel esim

The cheapest travel eSIM we’ve found in Colombia now has reasonably quick speeds vs competition. A good value option. Hands-on review here .

  • Prices : 1GB: $6.99 / 3GB: $17.99 / 5GB: $27.99 / 10GB: $45.99
  • Best prices we’ve found
  • Simple, efficient app and activation
  • Solid signal
  • Great live chat customer support
  • App lacks plan details
  • No loyalty program

Saily is a new, 2024 entrant into the eSIM space with a lot of potential. In Colombia prices are low, signal is strong and speeds have improved since we first started using it. We think that the app could be more detailed and there’s still some work to be done in a few areas.

Saily’s reception in Colombia is solid. As with most, their plans connect you to Movistar on 4G with no option to switch to any other plans. We’ve found Movistar to be reliable when moving in and around the country and generally much better than Claro.

We do test our travel eSIMs extensively and for good reason. When we first started using Saily, every day usage was slow, regardless of what we were trying to do. The speed tests backed this up, we were seeing 16 Mbps results. However, in the past week or so, that has improved quite a bit. We are now seeing speeds in the late 20s, specifically 28 Mbps. This puts Saily outside the top tier of eSIM provider speeds (Instabridge, Airalo and Gigsky) but in the mix of the tier 2 providers.

Screenshot: Saily eSIM speed test score in Colombia. 28.0 download, 30.2 upload

Saily pricing breakdown is as follows:

Screenshot: Saily app showing different plans available in Colombia

A big advantage for Saily is the cheapest travel eSIM in Colombia and with prices as they are out here, it’s not that close. With speeds as they now are, we think that Saily offers decent value for money, but is still just about bettered by GigSky for the best value for money in Colombia.

Saily’s app is simple, fresh and easy to use. We particularly liked the installation and activation checklist to get you up and running quickly. Improvements could be made by offering network information prior to purchase, such as mobile network and whether the plan is 4G or 5G. Finally, it seems like a lot of the app is handed off to their internet site via in-app browser to complete, not an issue, we just wonder if this will change in the future.

There’s no loyalty scheme from Saily at the moment, another thing we hope that will change in the future.

AloSIM Logo Thumbnail

Strong signal, average pricing, underwhelming speeds. Full review here .

  • Prices: 1GB: $8 / 2GB: $15 / 3GB: $21 / 5GB: $32.50 / 10GB: $55 / 20GB: $99
  • Competitive Pricing
  • VOIP calling and texting included
  • Easy and functional app and activation
  • Inconsistent speeds

AloSIM offers a reasonable service in Colombia. Signal is good, pricing is competitive enough, but it’s let down by inconsistent and sometimes slow speeds. A shame as we love the addition of VOIP calling and SMS with plans.

AloSIM is another eSIM that makes use of Movistar and guess what, it’s also on 4G only. Again there’s no option to switch to any other networks here. That’s not too much of an issue however, Movistar generally has strong coverage in and out of the cities except in certain circumstances.

Speed is the interesting one with AloSIM in Colombia. In our usage we found speeds to be a lot more up and down than with the other eSIM providers, something we wouldn’t say is very typical. Generally loading speeds were just okay, sometimes delayed, sometimes buffering but ultimately loading content.

Our speed test result came in at only 21 Mbps, which is disappointing and surprising considering that AloSIM uses the same network as for example, Airalo. We’d really like to see this improve.

Screenshot: AloSIM speed test score in Colombia: 20.9 Mbps

AloSIM pricing breakdown is as follows:

Screenshot: AloSIM 1 GB eSIM plan for $8 in Colombia

As it seemingly always is, AloSIM comes in at the exact same price as Airalo. We call that middle of the pack: more expensive than GigSky and cheaper than Nomad and Ubigi.

Comparing value directly with Airalo, we’d have to say that Airalo offers the better value overall as speeds are over 3x as fast according to our tests.

The AloSIM app is one of our favorites. It’s slick, visually appealing and your important information is front and center. You can switch currencies to a number of different options and you can install via a number of options, including direct from app. The only thing we’re not massive fans of is that older SIM packages seem to disappear from your My eSIM page once expired.

AloSIM offers a 5% cashback on all purchases loyalty scheme.

Best of the rest: Other options in Colombia

Instabridge esim logo

5. Instabridge

Fast speeds if your signal is strong, reasonable pricing

  • Prices: 1GB: $7.50 / 3GB: $20 / 10GB: $52
  • Cell providers: Claro
  • Fast download speeds possible with strong signal
  • Slightly cheaper than most other plans
  • Signal on Claro network is weak
  • No traditional loyalty scheme

Instabridge is an intriguing option in Colombia. We’ve been impressed by fast speeds when the signal is strong, but the problem is that the signal from the local network, Claro, is generally weak.

The only one of the eSIM providers tested that uses the Claro network and it certainly makes things more interesting. Unfortunately we’ve found Claro’s signal to struggle in and around the city as well as outside of it. This is often highlighted to us when we have both Claro and Movistar networks active at the same time from different eSIM providers and we see Movistar sitting on 3 or more bars out of 4 and Claro moving around 1 and 2 bars regularly. The screenshot below is an all too familiar example of the difference in signal performance.

Screenshot showing Claro with 2 bars of signal vs Movistar with 4 bars out of 4

Speeds on Instabridge and Claro are inconsistent but generally trend towards being very slow. The inconsistency is highlighted by Instabridge actually hitting our top recorded speed in Colombia of 98.1 Mbps, while mostly offering very slow speeds due to weak signal. This results in web pages and social media loading very slowly most of the time. We’ve been very frustrated trying to load pages up to show friends and either not managing to, or having to wait a long time. With speeds being slow more often than not, we’ve generally been left quite disappointed with speed performance.

Screenshot: Instabridge speed test score in Colombia: 98.1 Mbps download, 4.24 Mbps upload

Instabridge pricing breakdown is as follows:

Screenshot: Instabridge eSIM Colombia 1GB data for £6

Instabridge is one of the cheaper eSIM providers amongst the above average prices charged in Colombia. However, we think that Instabridge generally offers below average value due to weak signal and slow speeds.

The Instabridge app is definitely a looker, we appreciate the design. We take more of an issue with the functionality and amount of information available. For example, whereas with most apps you’ll be able to see what mobile networks the plan is on and whether it’s 4G or 5G, Instabridge doesn’t give you any of these details.

Instabridge does not offer a traditional loyalty/rewards program.

Instabridge

colombia travel esim

A reasonable but expensive option if you go for the right package. Very unreasonable pricing otherwise. We break it down below. Full review here .

  • Prices (Colombia only): 1GB: $25 / 3GB: $40 / 5GB: $45
  • Prices (Global Plan): 1 GB: $12 / 3GB: $26 / 5GB: $36
  • Reasonable speeds
  • Efficient app & activation
  • Global plan is feasible and cost-efficient
  • Very expensive plans, especially Colombia plan

Nomad’s pricing for a Colombia only eSIM is extortionate, fortunately the on-sale 106 country global plan saves the day and offers a reasonable(ish) cost and service for a price that is competitive in Colombia. For the sake of this guide, we’ll be reviewing the global plan that we purchased.

Like almost all Colombia eSIMs we get the Movistar network, on 4G, without the option to switch to any other networks. Like the other Colombia eSIMs, signal on Movistar is generally strong, as you’d expect from one of the biggest networks in the country.

Nomad served us quite well in Colombia, loading up pages and content relatively quickly, without any major delays, though streaming could be quicker. The speed test scores back that experience up with Nomad’s 30.2 Mbps download speed enough to get you by, but not as impressive as Airalo or GigSky, for example.

Screenshot: Nomad speed test score in Colombia: 30.2 Mbps

Nomad Global pricing breakdown is as follows:

This is certainly more reasonable than the Colombia only plan, which costs:

Screenshot: Nomad eSIM Global 3 GB, 1 GB, 5GB plans

Price Comparison: The 106 country global plan, cheaper than the Colombia only plan

Where to begin with Nomad’s pricing in Colombia – Let’s start with the Colombia only plan. Amongst all Nomad plans worldwide, it’s tied second as the most expensive, behind only Bolivia. Why this is, we’re really not sure, what we are sure of is that we definitely couldn’t recommend it as it doesn’t offer any kind of value.

However here at TEE we always dig a little deeper to see what we can find. In doing so, we found the Global 106 countries plan that includes Colombia and costs significantly less than the Colombian plan. Does it offer value? The global plan is still more expensive than Colombian plans from Airalo, AloSIM, Instabridge, Saily and GigSky but it’s a global SIM, so if you are heading to a number of other countries, we think that it could be a strong choice.

The Nomad app is fresh and modern with a permanent dark mode style design. Functionally, we’ve had no issues at all with payment, activation, installation and best of all, it includes the direct install from in app option. One cool feature that we always like to see is that you’re able to switch currencies if you wish, Nomad offers pricing in CAD, CHF, EUR, GBP and USD.

Nomad also has its own loyalty scheme which gets you Nomad Points with every purchase. They also have their own Telegram group with 200+ members, if that’s your thing.

Instabridge is the fastest eSIM tested in Colombia at 98.1 Mbps. The major caveat is that you’ll need strong signal for these speeds and that isn’t always the easiest to find. Airalo comes in second place at 71Mbps and Gigsky a close third with 65 Mbps. We think that you’re more likely to get faster speeds more of the time with Airalo and Gigsky.

  • What eSIM is cheapest in Colombia?

The cheapest eSIM in Colombia for almost every level of data is Saily. Their 1 GB plan is the same price as Gigsky but their 3 GB, 5 GB, 10 GB are the cheapest that we’ve seen in Colombia.

  • What eSIM is the best value in Colombia?

With the cheapest prices at almost every level of data and competitive speeds, we think GigSky is the best value eSIM in Colombia.

🏅 Winner: GigSky

  • What eSIM is the best for short-term travel in Colombia?

Airalo is our winner for the best eSIM for short-term travel in Colombia. Their 1 GB offering is fast and competitively priced and they also offer a 2GB plan for additional flexibility.

🏅 Winner: Airalo

  • What eSIM is best for heavy data users in Colombia?

There’s really only one option feasible for the best eSIM for heavy data users in Colombia, that is AloSIM’s $99 for 20 GB option. The price per GB is $4.95, somehow the lowest we’ve seen in Colombia.

🏅 Winner: AloSIM

  • What eSIM is best for budget travelers in Colombia?

You can’t look past Saily as the best eSIM for budget travelers in Colombia. Their plans are cheaper than the competition at almost very level of data.

🏅 Winner: Saily

  • What eSIM is best for travelers needing calls and SMS in Colombia?

We are yet to come across many travel eSIMs that offer calls and SMS in Colombia. With that in mind, we recommend AloSIM’s Hushed service, which offers a limited amount of calls and SMS over data.

  • Why choose travel eSIMs?

Travel eSIMs are transforming how we connect abroad, offering a seamless transition to local networks the moment you touch down, without the hassle of finding a local SIM. They tend to be more budget-friendly than the high costs associated with roaming charges. Plus, they’re flexible, allowing you to switch data plans or providers easily, without dealing with the inconvenience of changing physical SIM cards. Essentially, for convenience, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility in your mobile data needs while traveling, eSIMs are the smart choice.

How I Discovered eSIMs to Be the Smart Choice for Travelers

So long, roaming hassles! Using an eSIM for roaming is the best travel decision I've made in a long time.

colombia travel esim

Want to carefully manage and minimize roaming charges? An eSIM could be ideal.

Back in 2010, I took a backpacking trip around Indonesia for two months. I didn't travel with a mobile phone. All I had was my trusty Lonely Planet guidebook for recommendations, and the occasional stop at an internet cafe to email location updates to my parents.

Now, in 2024, I can't fathom how I managed to travel without the internet constantly at my fingertips. A phone is a travel essential and roaming while I'm overseas is non-negotiable -- and if I listed the reasons why, I'd be here all day. But roaming, if you're not careful, can also get expensive.

No matter where you're coming from or where you're traveling to, ensuring that you have internet access without running up a scary bill is a travel essential , and something you should ideally look into before you leave on your trip.

Carriers know how important it is for you to stay connected while you're traveling, and most have some kind of roaming deal you can take advantage of. But what happens when your network's roaming offering doesn't meet your data requirements for your destination, or is just too expensive?

Discovering the brilliance of eSIMs

Turns out, there's a very simple, practical solution if you have an unlocked phone like me: the eSIM. It's an electronic form of a SIM card embedded into your phone, which allows you to switch between carriers and data plans without the faff of removing and replacing physical SIM cards. The result is that you can have several SIM cards associated with your phone at once, allowing you to easily switch between plans and carriers as you travel.

In the past I'd opted for a Mi-Fi device equipped with a local pay-as-you-go SIM card when I touched down in a new country. This let me keep using my phone number and ensured I had internet access when I was out and about during the day. It's a fiddly solution, though, which usually involves finding somewhere to buy a SIM card immediately after getting off a long flight, and then remembering to charge the Mi-Fi every night.

I turned to eSIM as a last resort, but I won't be going back. I'm based in the UK, and my operator GiffGaff only allows limited roaming in select European countries. While planning a trip to the US and Canada last year, I was once again about to reach for my trusty Mi-Fi when I remembered something I'd heard about eSIM roaming operators.

From attending mobile phone events over the years, I had a vague understanding of eSIM technology, but I'd never considered using it personally for travel before this trip. It's not unusual to have a lack of awareness about how eSIM technology could benefit you while traveling. According to research due to be published this month by tech analysis firm CCS Insight, only 37% of Americans have heard of eSIM and only 8% have used an eSIM roaming provider.

One of the biggest challenges for eSIM providers is that most people are still unaware that eSIM exists as an option for them, says CCS Insight Director Kester Mann. Even if they have heard of it, less technically savvy customers may be put off by the installation instructions. Plus, it's often another thing to add to a long prevacation to-do list (although you can also do it when you arrive).

Another obstacle is that a lot of the names in eSIM game are new, said Mann. "People perhaps are a little bit nervous around signing up to the company they haven't heard of, or one that perhaps hasn't got an established reputation."

How I used Airalo's eSIM for traveling

There are a number of roaming eSIM providers that you can use, all offering competitive rates on data bundles, and different benefits across different regions. There's scope for many more providers to pop up in the near future, but for now some of the biggest names include Airhub, EasySim, Holafly and Airalo.

iPhone showing instructions in Airalo app

All the instructions you need can be found in Airalo's app.

In my research I couldn't find much to separate them and decided to take a chance on Airalo due to the diverse range of countries it supported. Installing an eSIM and getting it up and running isn't an entirely frictionless process, but by carefully following Airalo's in-app step-by-step instructions, I got it right the first time.

Each country requires a different eSIM, and you can have multiple eSIMs installed on your phone at once. After you've installed your first eSIM, adding more is pretty intuitive -- everything can be done from within the Airalo app.

For a trip at the end of 2023, I activated two eSIMs, one for the US and one for Canada, buying 20GB of data for $42 and 3GB of data for $15 respectively. I was pleased to find when I returned to Canada this year that I could simply reactivate the eSIM I'd installed and upload more pay as you go credit to see me through my trip.

As I landed in Canada from the US, I switched my primary data plan to my preinstalled Canada eSIM in my iPhone settings and I was good to go immediately. It was so frictionless that I even decided to plump for eSIM on my trip to Barcelona for Mobile World Congress in March. My UK plan allows me to use 5GB of data while roaming in Spain, but for an intense week at a conference I knew this wouldn't be enough. Instead I spent $12 on a 10GB eSIM, and even though I had to top this up during the week, it remained a bargain.

Like me, most people who try eSIM roaming have a positive experience, says Mann. But he advises people to do their research and compare costs with their domestic provider before they head off on vacation to ensure it makes sense for them. Opting for eSIM might be especially good if you're traveling to "more far-flung destinations that aren't typically covered in operators' roaming packages," he adds.

Which phones have eSIM capability?

Another key thing to bear in mind if you're considering an eSIM for roaming is to check whether it's available on your phone. Not all phones are currently eSIM-compatible, but if you have an iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR or any post-2019 Apple phone, you'll be able to take advantage of the technology. Some Samsung, Motorola and Google phones also have eSIM compatibility, but you'll have to look up your model individually if you're not sure. You'll also need to make sure your phone isn't locked by your carrier.

Something I discovered on my eSIM journey so far is that it's a fairly low-stakes technology to experiment with. It's affordable, flexible and temporary. If I find a better deal on another provider later, it'll be easy for me to switch.

The market is booming right now, with about 700 million people in the world owning eSIM-compatible devices and as many as 10% of people in some countries purchasing an eSIM before they travel, according to CCS Insight. If you're traveling abroad this summer, whether it be to Europe, Asia or just over the border to Mexico or Canada, why not join us?

eSIM in Colombia: best mobile data plans

Owners of modern smartphones and tablets can make their journey through Colombia more comfortable, because they have the opportunity to install their eSIM and activate a profitable plan for permanent access to the Internet. The built-in communication module has become the real deal for people who spend a lot of time on business trips, as they have begun to pay less for communication and avoid spending their free time trying to connect to local operators.

Which eSIM to choose in Colombia?

The main requirement for a modern traveler is a stable mobile internet connection in Colombia. You can use mobile traffic in roaming, but the cost of such services will not please you in the end. If you want to use all online services in the usual mode without having to count every penny, we advise you to purchase an eSIM plan in Colombia with just the needed services.

For a week-long business trip that will take place in the city, you can connect a package with a small volume of mobile traffic. You won't have much traffic for social media, but you will always be able to connect to public Wi-Fi networks for free. If your journey involves constant movement around different cities and regions, it is better to choose a plan with an increased volume of mobile traffic. On the road, you will not have the opportunity to use public networks, but for the sake of safety and comfort it is important to provide yourself with stable access to the Internet.

Benefits of using eSIM in Colombia

An embedded SIM card is a great way to make your journey comfortable, safe and profitable. To activate the eSIM plan in Colombia, you won't have to visit the local store, where not every manager speaks English. Instead, you can pick up a data package long before the journey and activate it right at the airport. The updated communication module can be programmed for any network parameters. For this purpose, the built-in options of the device itself are used, so that you do not have to visit a support department.

If you plan to travel to several neighboring countries, it is best to activate the built-in module and connect several plans at the same time. You can use mobile data in Peru at one rate and switch to another package when you get to Colombia. You do not have to change SIM cards, just switch from one plan to another in the menu of the device.

The lack of physical media increases the degree of protection of your personal data, since no one will be able to use your SIM card to access bank card information. More and more experts agree that the built-in communication module will become a must in any mobile device, and right now you have the opportunity to try all the positive aspects of this technology on your own.

This South American City Is One of the Best Places to Travel in 2024 — Here's How to Visit

Cartagena, Colombia, has something for everyone.

As the boat sped away from Cartagena, I held on a little tighter to the handrails, watching the city line quickly diminish on the horizon. In a matter of minutes, I could only see the Caribbean Sea and lush mangroves lining small undeveloped islands. When I finally got to my destination — a private beach in Isla Barú —  I was in a beachy oasis with no signs of Cartagena de Indias, the bustling city I was actually visiting.

Piero Damiani/Getty Images

It's exactly this juxtaposition that makes this Colombian city — named one of the best places to travel in 2024 by Travel + Leisure editors — so special. If you want a beach vacation, you can visit white-sand beaches and turquoise waters that the Caribbean is famous for. If you want more culture, the walled "Old City" — a UNESCO Heritage Site — is teeming with history. Elsewhere in Cartagena, towering new buildings spotlight just how much the area has modernized and its potential for growth. (Colombia, as a whole, saw a 222% increase in international tourists between 2010 and 2022.)

In Cartagena, growth in 2023 included the debut of Casa Pestagua , a historic 17th-century mansion that underwent a $15 million renovation in the Old City. The owners also opened up overnight bungalows at Acasi — a private beach in Barú that is a popular day-trip spot. In 2025, Disney's "Encanto"-themed tour of Colombia will include a stop at Cartagena, and the city is slated to welcome a Four Seasons hotel.

Susmita Baral/Travel + Leisure

"Cartagena has something to offer everyone," Boris Seckovic , a T+L A-List advisor and co-founder of Amakuna , said. "There's ample architecture and history, and high-end dining, Cartagena being home to some of Colombia's leading chefs. Cartagena is also known for its nightlife, particularly around the holiday season."

Back in the Old City, I couldn't get enough of the charming cobblestone streets lined with colorful walls, quaint wooden doors with whimsical doorknockers, and diverse architecture. (According to Seckovic, the city has a mix of classicist, baroque, neoclassical, and republican architecture.) Vendors set up shop on the corners, selling the likes of arepas , limonada de coco , and fresh coconuts. Even while aimlessly roaming the area, I stumbled upon street performers, vibrant murals, the iconic "La Gorda Gertrudis" sculpture by Colombian artist Fernando Botero, and countless boutiques.

Susmita Baral/Travel + Leisure

During my visit, I went on a walking tour of the city with Galavanta , which offered both fun tidbits of trivia and important historical context about how Cartagena became the city it is today. I learned that the aforementioned whimsical doorknockers that I couldn't stop taking pictures of symbolized the resident's profession back in the day. A lion, for example, meant the home belonged to a military family.

I also learned that Cartagena was once Spanish America's largest slave port. David Wheat, an associate professor of history at Michigan State University, told T+L that at least 100,000 were trafficked through the city between 1570 and 1640 from the likes of Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Jose Palacios Preciado, the former director of the Colombian national archives, told The Atlanta Black Star that 1.1 million Africans were trafficked through Cartagena.

After learning about the city's history, it became hard not to see Afro-Colombian culture in everything from the music to the art. "The music we listen to is called champeta , and it is African beats-based," Alex Rocha, an Afro-Colombian who owns Experience Real Cartagena , shared. "We have poets like Candelario Obeso and writers like Manuel Zapata Olivella , the author of ' Changó, el gran Putas .'"

Rosie Irene Betancourt/Getty Images

I would soon learn that even the eye-catching palenqueras , who sport bright dresses with bowls of tropical fruit on their head, were instrumental in rebelling against slavery. Fernando Rivera, a guide working with Galavanta, told me that many enslaved people ran away to create their own villages that the Spanish government called palenques . "Women were crucial in aiding in the escapes. They knew the enslaver's lifestyle and were able to time the best moment for the escapes," Rivera said. "Women could also move throughout the city, which made them the perfect messengers and guaranteed the palenques would be safe."

These contributions led to the formation of San Basilio de Palenque , which made history in 1713 as the first free town for Africans in the Americas. Today, centuries later, palenqueras sell fruit throughout the Old City. (Though, they likely sell more photo-ops to tourists than actual fruit — a clever pivot amid the city's growing tourism scene.)

Both Rocha and Rivera noted there are plenty of sites and landmarks to experience and honor Cartagena's Afro-Colombian culture, including Plaza de San Pedro Claver, San Basilio de Palenque, La Ruta del Esclavo, Monumento a la Palenquera, Mercado de Bazurto, Plaza Joe Arroyo, and Plaza Benkos Bioho.

Even Cartagena's food scene carries strong influences of the past. "Our African ancestors left the legacy of the various foods such as coconut rice; patacones (fried plantains); and different types of fruit-based sweets like dulce de papaya, dulce de coco, dulce de yuca," Rocha said. "There's also sancocho , which is a stew cooked in a pot with vegetables, plantains, potatoes, corn, yuca, and fish or beef." (Pro-tip: Roche recommended dining at La Cocina de Socorro , La Picúa , Kiosko El Bony , and La Mulata to explore Afro-Colombian cuisine.)

Don't miss popular mainstay restaurants like Celele , Alma , La Cevicheria , Carmen , and Donjuán Cartagena . In 2023, chef Heberto Eljach, the brains behind Alma, debuted Ánima in Casa Pestagua , focusing on the ancestral traditions of Colombian cuisine. "Ánima's relationship with Colombian cuisine is focused on ancient techniques of traditional cooking — this includes preservation methods (cured, salted, fermented, canned, smoked, pickled), the use of local products, artisanal fishing, organic products from the Montes de Maria, Amazon, and other regions of Colombia," Eljach explained.

And, of course, no culinary tour of Colombia is complete without a coffee experience. After all, Colombia is the leading producer of wash Arabica coffee .

My first visit to Cartagena entailed daily visits to Epoca Coffee , coupled with a desperate impulse purchase of coffee beans so I could attempt to replicate this tradition back home. But during my second trip, I joined a coffee experience at  Café San Alberto . Here, I learned about Colombia's coffee scene and explored the flavor notes of different beans — I left with a greater appreciation of all the elements at play in making a batch of coffee beans.

At the end of my recent visit, I couldn't help but compare my two visits to Cartagena. So much had changed in the four years between my trips — and yet, there was still a rich culture that permeated throughout the city. I found that I was able to relive what I loved from my first visit while also dabbling in new experiences, and ultimately, I was able to curate a trip that had a little bit of everything.
