In case you want to close an entire Chrome window, then press Ctrl+Shift+W (Windows) or Command+Shift+W (Mac).

On a Linux or Windows PC, you can close an open Firefox tab by pressing Ctrl+W.

On a Mac, the keyboard shortcut to close an open Firefox tab is Command+W.

To close an open tab in Safari, press Command+W on your keyboard. To close your Safari window, press Command+Shift+W instead.

And, if you end up closing an important tab, there's a way to restore closed Safari tabs in your browser.

I have the same problem. Command Q does not work either.

I have Safari 5.1 running on 10.6.8 on a white MacBook. Since updating to 5.1, Safari will not close. It will also prevent the Mac from closing down. The only way I can close it is going to Force Quit in the Apple menu.

This problem does not arise on my iMac with the same software and configuration.

It only arises after using Safari for a little while. For example, I can quit normally now. But will probably not be able to quit later today.

Seems like a bug in 5.1.

The quit selection in the File menu is greyed out.

Have to force quit... don't like doing that.

Click your Apple menu / Force Quit.

You can force quit apps if necessary that way.

Yes, I believe everyone in this thread understands how to Force Quit applications is OSX.

This thread is discussing what is certainly a bug in Apple software.

I would estimate that the "Quit Safari" menu option is grayed out

3 out of every 5 times I use it (and no, COMMAND Q doesn't work either). There doesn't seem to be any common pattern between the instances.

Folks, what, if any, Safari extensions are you running?

"Auto Update" extensions is enabled.

I've submitted a bug report to Apple already.

Or are you simply trolling for cheap points at 4am?

I don't want to force quit Safari every time I use it, and I shouldn't have to.

I was using a gmail notifier extension. I unloaded it and it seems to have solved the issue at least for now.

Happens frequently for me (I'm emotionally inclined to agree with the "3 out of 5" comment above, but haven't done the research to affirm this intellectually).

Additional Information

1. When this happens, I also cannot close a tab. The "button" to close a tab never appears in the tab.

2. Everything else in Safari functions perfectly. Safari is, for example, in this state right now, but I'm typing this comment in a tab that I created to search for answers to this problem.

3. I'm running Safari 5.1.5 with no extensions (so that's not the problem) on a 2-week-old Macbook Pro 2.2 GHz Core i7 running Lion 10.7.3.

I went on a 2-week safari in South Africa's famous Kruger National Park for just $50 a day

• I went on an epic two-week safari in South Africa's famous Kruger National Park for about $50 a day.
• I camped beneath the stars and saw elephants right from my tent.
• Driving our own car, camping, and preparing our own food saved us money. 

The idea of a South African safari often conjures up images of five-star lodges and luxury game drives — but a holiday in the bush doesn't have to be out of reach for travelers on a tighter budget.

According to a data analysis from Go2Africa , the average traveler heads on South African safaris with a medium-high budget, meaning they spend $5,500 to $6,000 on a trip, an increase from last year.

But, on a recent trip, I found that I was able to have an incredible two-week safari trip in Kruger National Park for about $50 a day.

Here's how I did it and how travelers can save money when planning their safari.

I saved by buying an annual pass

The biggest savings at Kruger National Park can come from buying a Wild Card, an annual pass that gives you a year of access to 80+ parks in southern Africa, including Kruger.

The Wild Card is discounted for South Africans but it cost me 3,780 rands, or about $200, as a foreigner.

Without a Wild Card, I would've had to pay over 486 rands a day to visit Kruger, meaning this pass pays for itself in just over a week.

Overall, my pass came to about 270 rands a day for the two-week trip.

We also stayed in one of Kruger's many rest camps

One of the most immersive ways to experience Kruger is by camping in the South African bush. We saw elephants near our camp and woke up to the sounds of warthogs and hyenas in the distance.

We live in South Africa , so it was easy enough to bring our own camping gear, though travelers can rent a tent, sleeping bags, chairs, and cooking basics from nearby rental companies for a few thousand rands for two weeks.

Kruger National Park has a range of rest camps for different budgets and preferences, whether you prefer to use your own tent or stay in a bungalow with your own kitchen and bathroom.

Prices also vary depending on the season, so it's wise to avoid really busy months, like September and December. I found that around mid-January to mid-March, two people can camp at Punda Maria, one of Kruger's cheapest camping options, for just 285 rands a night. During high season, prices go up by about 100 rands per night.

My husband and I visited during a less busy season. We camped at Maroela Satellite Camp and Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp for 331 to 349 rands a night.

Cooking our own food saved us money …

We chose to prepare our own meals and braai (a type of South African barbecue) beneath the stars.

Fortunately, most campsites have plug points, braai stands, shared bathrooms, shared kitchens, and shops selling everything you need to braai.

The park also has restaurants and coffee shops scattered throughout it, which is helpful for anyone who wants to purchase food and drinks without leaving the property.

But there's nothing quite like braaiing beneath the stars, watching for the occasional hyena along the fence line.

… and so did doing a self-driving safari

If you don't have your own car, you can rent a sedan for just over 4,000 rands for two weeks. Fortunately, though, there are enough tarred roads in Kruger that you don't need a special 4x4 to enjoy the park.

We ended up self-driving our own car in Kruger National Park, which allowed us to choose our own adventure and be our own guide.

Rest camps have sighting boards on which visitors pin their major animal sightings from that day and the previous day. This makes it easy to follow trends and choose where to search first. There's also an app where visitors post their sightings.

On our last self-drive safari in Kruger, we saw cheetahs and all the Big Five (leopard, elephant, rhino, lion, and African buffalo).

Overall, our trip was affordable and dreamy

We saved money throughout our trip and managed to go on a two-week safari in Kruger National Park for just under $50 a day per person.

This price includes two Wild Cards, petrol for our vehicle, and our camping fees and expenses — and our trip was well worth it.

Apple Releases Safari Technology Preview 195 With Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements

Apple today released a new update for Safari Technology Preview , the experimental browser Apple first introduced in March 2016. Apple designed the ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.

The current ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ release is compatible with machines running macOS Ventura and macOS Sonoma , the latest version of macOS that Apple released in September 2023.

The ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ update is available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences or System Settings to anyone who has downloaded the browser . Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website .

Apple's aim with ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.

Local News | Free admission for military, veterans to African Safari Wildlife Park on Memorial Day

A valid military identification card is required to redeem the offer, the release said.

The African Safari Wildlife Park will offer its full suite of animal experiences and attractions that day, including the Drive-Thru Safari, Walk-Thru Safari, Dinosaur Takeover and educational animal programs, according to the release.

“We invite all of our service members and veterans to join us for a day of animal adventures,” said Park director Kelsey Keller in the release. “This is our way of saying ‘thank you’ for the sacrifices you have made for our country.”

The Ohio Safari Park, African Safari Wildlife Park, is located at 267 S. Lightner Road in Port Clinton.

Google docs and slides finally bring their new voice tools to edge and safari.

Better browser support benefits more users

• The Google Docs and Slides voice typing feature is now available on Safari and Edge browsers for all users, not just Chrome.
• Voice typing allows for hands-free editing and captioning in documents, and drafting speaker notes in presentations.
• Users can control browser-level access to voice data collected for Docs and Slides, with rollout for all account types by June 14.

As Android enthusiasts, as much as we like to think Google products and services are not a walled garden like Apple tech, there are several services and features available exclusively to Pixel users, paying Workspace customers, and Android users in general. However, one such feature on Google Slides and Docs just shed its Chrome exclusivity to benefit scores of people using these services on Apple’s Safari browser and Microsoft’s Edge pre-installed on Windows machines.

Google Docs tips and tricks: Make the most of the Microsoft Word alternative

Google Docs and Slides have a few features tucked up in the menus, even if you exclude all the new Gemini-powered features added in the past year. I often use voice typing in Docs , available under Tools → Voice typing , or with the quick keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+S (on Windows). The feature also allows editing the document without touching your keyboard, as long as you give the browser tab access to your device mic. Similar controls can be used to add captions to images in your documents.

On Slides, this voice typing can be used to draft and edit speaker notes for your presentation. However, the feature has only been available to Chrome users, and people on a Mac are forced to install the browser if they want it. However, Google has finally expanded support to Edge and Safari.

Desktop users can use voice typing, irrespective of browser preference

In a Workspace Updates blog post explaining what’s changing, Google says the web speech API used controls the feature and users will have browser-level controls for it. This speech-to-text service manages voice data and sends just the text data to Google Docs and Slides for input in your document. If you’re paranoid about voice data collection in the background, just make sure to deny microphone access to tabs where Docs and Slides are open, and your browser should remember the preference.

Workspace administrators can still control which browsers support these features, because only some may offer bowser-level API management controls. That said, Google is not restricting the expansion of these features by account type. The rollout is underway and should reach Workspace, Workspace Individual, and personal account holders by June 14.
