Iowa football is heading to the Citrus Bowl. Here's how to get there and what to do in Orlando

Hawkeye fans will have the chance to spend their holidays in Orlando as the Iowa football team moves on to the Citrus Bowl  for a New Year's Day showdown with Kentucky . 

Despite Iowa's regular season ending on a sour note Saturday night, losing 42-3 to Michigan in the Big Ten championship game, they still got in the Big Ten's second-highest bowl affiliation outside of the College Football Playoff (which included Michigan). At one point, the Hawkeyes were ranked No. 2 in the country. Iowa recorded 10 regular season wins for only the fourth time in Kirk Ferentz's tenure. 

For many Iowa Fans, travel plans start as soon as the bowl game is announced. Here is some travel information to help you get there:

Bowl Packages

Camping World Stadium features several premium options, including luxury suites, midfield loge boxes, indoor club seating and on-field bunker suites. If you're planning to travel with friends or family, group tickets are available at a discounted price, according to the Citrus Bowl website . 

ADA tickets are also available to purchase on the Citrus Bowl Website. 

The Vrbo Citrus Bowl Pep Rally will be on New Year's Eve from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Pointe Orlando. The band and cheerleaders from the participating team will perform and the head coach will make a special appearance to fire up the crowd before game day. 

Vrbo Citrus Bowl FanFest will be on New Year's Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tinker Field next to Camping World Stadium. That will feature interactive games, inflatables and face painting. Admission is free and local vendors will sell a wide selection of food and beverages.

Iowa fans who drive to Orlando will be faced with an 18-hour drive from Iowa City. For those who opt to fly, a round trip flight between Dec. 27, 2021 to Jan. 3, 2022 from Des Moines to Orlando starts at $650.

Flights from Minneapolis or Chicago are less expensive. A round trip flight from Minneapolis to Orlando between Dec. 27, 2021 to Jan. 3, 2022 starts at $500. The cost from Chicago starts at $430. 

Camping World Stadium is an 11-minute drive from Orlando Executive Airport and a 22-minute drive from Orlando International Airport.

Prices for hotels shoot up for dates around game time. Lodging near Camping World Stadium ranges from $50 to $300 per night. Hotels near the Orlando Executive Airport range from $195 to $350 a night. Near Orlando International Airport, prices range from $50 to $300 per night. 

Here's where to eat and drink in 

For meat-lovers, Priceless Bar-B-Que By Ray , a food truck located at 1831 West Central Blvd, is a five minute walk from Camping World Stadium. It offers chicken sandwiches, wings and ribs — meals starting at $7.

For those who are craving some seafood, Notcho Momma's Seafood is a 10-minute walk from the stadium and located on 18 North Dollins Ave. It offers fish baskets, shrimp or you can build your own platter — meals starting at $7. 

What else is there to do?

Orlando is home to Walt Disney World and its four theme parks, the Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom. Iowans seeking a respite from the cold winter could cool off at Disney's Blizzard Beach Water Park or Disney's Typhoon Lagoon Water Park. 

Movie fans can head to Universal Studios' Parks and Resorts where they can go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, fly with E.T. to his home planet on E.T. Adventure or crash through Krustyland on the Simpsons Ride.

Fans seeking an underwater adventure can head to SeaWorld and watch playful groups of bottlenose dolphins, explore an Empire Penguin habitat or pet stingrays in a stingray lagoon. Thrill seekers can  "soar like a ray" at 55 mph on the Manta coaster or ride the Mako "hyper coaster" with nine zero-g sections and speeds up to 73 mph. 

Football fans who want turn want to take in some NBA action could catch the defending NBA Finals Champion Milwaukee Bucks take on the Orlando Magic at 7 p.m. Dec. 28 and Dec. 30. Their home, the Amway Center, is just a mile east of Camping World Stadium. 

Fans who want to stay away from theme parks or other sports can find plenty of things to do in Orlando's downtown. The Thornton Park District offers an array of shops and shops on a cobblestone street. Lake Eola Park in Orlando's downtown could be a perfect place for a peaceful stroll before the game. CityArts Factory and the Orange County Regional History Center could be two more artsy stops on a sports-heavy trip.

Membership FAQ

Where are the member seats located.

Member tickets are primarily in the Field, Plaza and Club levels of the stadium (lower bowl). However, members may elect to select some tickets in the Terrace Level (upper deck).

Do I get to choose my own seats?

All seating for members will be done with consideration given to stated preference provided in the renewal process and your priority level based upon years of consecutive membership with Florida Citrus Sports. All seating is subject to availability in respective sections.

How can I sit with my friends?

We will do our best to accommodate these requests subject to availability in the locations included in each respective membership package. If the two packages are at different levels, the member at the higher level would have to forego their place in the priority seating order and wait to be seated when the other member’s place in the order comes up.

Can I upgrade at a later date?

Of course! Upgrades are always available, though the availability of seating options may vary later in the year.

Where is ADA seating?

Along the Sideline Goal areas at the Field level (100 sections) and all around the bowl at the Plaza level (P sections).

When do general public tickets go on sale?

Any tickets still available after the sale of membership packages will go on public sale in the Fall.

Which side of the stadium does each conference sit on for the bowl games?

For the Citrus Bowl, the Big Ten will be on the west sideline while the SEC is on the east sideline. In the Cheez-It Bowl, the Big 12 is on the west sideline while the ACC is on the east sideline.

Does my club ticket give me access to other stadium events?

Members with club seats will be given the right of first refusal (ROFR) to purchase tickets for most stadium events. The ROFR window will be determined by the promoter of the event and will be communicated to club members by Florida Citrus Sports.

Where can I use my parking passes?

Parking will be assigned in a fashion similar to stadium seating. We will do our best to assign parking spaces as close as possible to seating locations according to membership priority and available lots.

If I’m unable to use all of my tickets, is there somewhere I can donate them?

Through Florida Citrus Sports Foundation’s Dream Ticket Clearinghouse, members may donate their unused tickets to economically disadvantaged children in the Central Florida community, and in the process, you may receive a tax-deductible charitable donation. To take advantage of this program, contact Florida Citrus Sports at 407-423-2476.

Heading to Orlando to watch Kentucky in the Citrus Bowl? Here's ticket and travel info

Kentucky coach Mark Stoops will face a familiar foe when the Wildcats play  Iowa, his alma mater, on Jan. 1 at 1 p.m., and it’ll be in a familiar destination for UK fans: the Citrus Bowl in Orlando.

Three years ago, UK beat Penn State in the program’s first-ever visit to the Citrus Bowl.

Here’s your travel guide for this year’s matchup:

How To Get to Orlando

It isn’t cheap to fly from Lexington to Orlando for New Year’s weekend. There are round-trip options from United, American and Delta — with a one-stop layover — but not for under $600 as of Dec. 7. Returning on Monday, Jan. 3 is cheaper than on Sunday, Jan. 2, the day after the game.

Flying out of Louisville is more affordable with some round-trip fares at or below $600; there are even a couple of direct flights, although they are through discount airlines Frontier and Spirit. Cincinnati also has direct options through Delta.

Camping World Stadium, where the game is played, is about a 20-minute drive from Orlando International Airport.

Driving is also a possibility for those up for a road trip. It’s a 12 or 13-hour trek from Lexington and Louisville, respectively, and a stop in Atlanta is about halfway.

Where To Stay in and near Orlando

VRBO  is the sponsor of the Citrus Bowl, and there are homestays available through the online site, as well as its competitor,  AirBnb . There aren't an abundance of options right next to the stadium, but there are plenty in the Orlando-area, with various price points depending on size, location and quality.

There also numerous hotels , many of which have available rooms. As expected, some are several hundreds of dollars a night while others are closer to $100.

How To Get Tickets for the Citrus Bowl

The cheapest ticket available as of Dec. 7 was listed at $67 — plus fees — and could be purchased at CitrusBowlOrlando.com/tickets . A ticket in the lower bowl starts around $100.

Kentucky fans will largely be on the east side of the stadium.

Capacity at the game was limited a year ago, but two years ago, Alabama and Michigan played in front of a near-capacity crowd of 59,746.

Things To Do in Orlando

Aside from attending the game at Camping World Stadium — a venue which was first constructed as part of a Works Progress Administration project by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1936 — there are famous parks in and near Orlando: Disney World, Universal Studios, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and so on.

The Citrus Bowl Pep Rally will take place at 4 p.m. on Dec. 31, and a FanFest will occur from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Jan. 1.

Disney’s Magic Kingdom, EPCOT and Hollywood Studios are all staying open until midnight on Dec. 31 and there are plenty of other New Year’s Eve festivities throughout the city. Check out VisitOrlando.com for a list of possible outings.

Fans wishing to watch some NBA action can do so in the days prior to the game, as the Orlando Magic  is home on both Dec. 28 and Dec. 30. Former Wildcat Mychal Mulder, who played 56 games for UK from 2015 to 2017, is a member of the Magic.

In both games, the Magic will host the defending NBA-champion Milwaukee Bucks, who recently signed former UK center DeMarcus Cousins.

Penn state announces official citrus bowl travel packages.

Various travel packages are now available on Primesport for fans heading to Orlando for the Citrus Bowl.

The Penn State Alumni Association, Nittany Lion Club, and Penn State Athletics collaborate each year to offer the packages, which provide everything from airfare and hotel reservations to official tickets to the game.

Here are the specifics for each of the available packages:

3 Night Air & Land

The premier package offered by Primesport, this deal includes roundtrip airfare, game tickets, and a hotel reservation from December 30 through January 2. Starting at $1845 per person, this package also includes transportation to Camping World Stadium as well as admission to the official Penn State pregame tailgate and a Penn State welcome reception.

3 Night Land Only

Exactly what it sounds like, this package is basically the same as the previous arrangement — without the airfare. Game tickets and a hotel reservation from December 30 to January 2 are still included in this $895 combination, as is transportation to and from the stadium and admission to the pregame tailgate and Penn State welcome reception. 

2 Night Land Only

At a (slightly) modest $675 per person, this package includes a hotel reservation from December 31 to January 2 as well as game tickets. Game day transportation is provided, as is access to the pregame tailgate.

Travel plans for Citrus Bowl games are underway

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - The Iowa Hawkeyes are headed to the Citrus Bowl, and the Iowa State Cyclones are headed to the Cheez-it Bowl in Orlando, Florida. Both games have fans already making travel plans.

Destination Unlimited has a location in Cedar Rapids and Coralville. Owner Duane Jasper said the next 24 hours were going to be the busiest time for people booking their trip. They expect to be busy until Thursday. Jasper said they have a variety of different packages that vary in price from $800 to the most expensive being $3,300. Jasper said the most expensive package includes a hotel, a flight, and travel back and forth to the various events.

This would be Iowa’s first bowl game in 2-years after the Music City Bowl was canceled last year.

“We haven’t been to the Citrus Bowl or Orlando in the last 15-years,” he said. “I think there’s going to be a lot of enthusiasm to go to Orlando.”

Jasper said this trip has also been impacted by COVID-19. He said there is a shortage of pilots at this time to make the flight.

The Hawkeyes play the Kentucky Wildcats on January 1st, and the Cyclones play the Clemson Tigers on December 29th.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 29:

• Depart for Orlando, Florida!
• Arrivals and Registration with the Varsity Spirit Staff
• Group Orientation and Rehearsal

*PLEASE NOTE: Travel arrangements to Orlando are NOT INCLUDED in the cost of the performance package. You are responsible for transportation from the airport to the hotel.

SATURDAY,  DECEMBER 30:

• Breakfast at the Hard Rock Café
• After breakfast, head to the parks where you can fight villains on The Incredible Hulk Coaster™ or laugh along with Gru on the Despicable Me Minions Mayhem™.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 31: Happy New Year!

• Buses will be shuttling off property for group rehearsal
• The remainder of the day can be spent enjoying the Universal Studios Resort Theme Parks!

MONDAY, JANUARY 1: Cheez-It Citrus Bowl Game Day!

• Dress rehearsal followed by your Cheez-It Citrus Bowl  Halftime Performance!
• Enjoy lunch on your own
• The rest of the day will be spent enjoying the Universal Studios Resort Theme Parks!

TUESDAY, JANUARY 2:

• Check out of your hotel and depart for home.

*You are responsible for providing your own transportation from the hotel back to the airport. 

Please note: One (1) chaperone 21 years or older is required per 10 participants. 

This is a team event, but there is not a minimum number of team members that need to register. For example, if only 1 or 2 members are able to attend, they are welcome. If the whole team is able to go, that is also allowed.

TOUR COST, RESERVATIONS & PAYMENTS : The total number accepted for the tour is limited. Completed reservation application and $200.00 (non-refundable) per person deposit MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE VARSITY SPIRIT LLC OFFICE on or before the dates listed below: (This deposit is credited towards your total cost.)  

HOW DOES PRICING WORK? Pricing is per person based on the total number of people in the room regardless if they are a participant or a spectator. For example, 3 participants and one spectator would be the quad rate per person. The participants would each pay the participant quad rate and the spectator would be the quad spectator price. All prices listed are per person.

Event Payment Deadlines:

  $200 per person deposit due by the following dates below.*

• If you attended camp in June, your deposit is due on July 13, 2023 .
• If you attended camp in July, your deposit is due on August 17, 2023.
• If you attended camp in August, your deposit is due on September 14, 2023.  

FINAL PAYMENT IS DUE IN THE VARSITY SPIRIT LLC OFFICE ON OR BEFORE OCTOBER 26, 2023. UNIFORMS WILL NOT BE SHIPPED UNTIL THE BALANCE OF PAYMENT IS MADE.  

*Trips may sell out prior to deadlines. Registrations are taken on a first come, first served basis with deposits.  After September 14, please call the Varsity Spirit LLC office for availability at 800-238-0286 (option 2) for availability.  

Cancellations on or before October 26, 2023 will receive a full refund except for the $200 deposit. Cancellations between October 27, 2023 and November 9, 2023, an additional $100 per person penalty will apply. Starting on November 10, 2023 there will be no refunds.

Extra Nights: A limited number of rooms are available for December 28, 2023 and January 2, 2024 at an additional charge per room per night. Please indicate on your registration form if you would like to purchase an additional nights. Adding an extra night does not automatically upgrade your park ticket.

Additional Park Tickets:  Discounted park tickets are available to purchase for any family members not attending on a Varsity Spirit travel package. Please indicate on your registration form if you would like to purchase any additional tickets.  Rates for passes are below.

• 3 Day, 2 Park Ticket: $370
• 4 Day, 2 Park Ticket: $399
• 5 Day, 2 Park Ticket: $419

Confirmation:  After completed reservation application is received, a reservation confirmation will be sent to you via email. If paying with credit card you will need to call into the office once this confirmation email is received.

Cancellations & Refunds:

FINAL PAYMENT IS DUE IN THE VARSITY SPIRIT LLC OFFICE ON OR BEFORE NOVEMBER 10, 2023. UNIFORMS WILL NOT BE SHIPPED UNTIL THE BALANCE OF PAYMENT IS MADE.  

CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS: Cancellations on or before October 26, 2023 will receive a full refund except for the $200 deposit. Cancellations between October 27, 2023 and November 9, 2023, an additional $100 per person penalty will apply. Starting on November 10, 2023 there will be no refunds.

FINAL PAYMENT: If final payment is not received on or November 10, and special written arrangements are not made and approved with Varsity Spirit LLC, you will automatically be removed from the tour, which will result in a complete forfeiture of all monies paid.  

CHAPERONES: EACH participant MUST HAVE AT LEAST ONE ADULT CHAPERONE. However, if there is more than one athlete attending from your school, you may have one chaperone for up to ten event participants. Adult Chaperones must be 21 years of age or older. Varsity Spirit LLC is not responsible for supervising the All-Americans.

For cancellations received starting on November 10, 2023, there will be no refund .

CONFIRMATION:  After completed reservation application and deposit are received, a reservation confirmation will be sent to you via email. Information regarding the performance and confirmed rooming list will be sent to you in late September. A link with your routine and your uniform will be sent to you two weeks prior to the event.

RESPONSIBILITY DISCLOSURE NOTICE: VARSITY SPIRIT LLC, D.B.A. UNIVERSAL CHEERLEADERS ASSOCIATION, UNIVERSAL DANCE ASSOCIATION, NATIONAL CHEERLEADERS ASSOCIATION, NATIONAL DANCE ALLIANCE, UNITED SPIRIT ASSOCIATIONAND URBAN CHEERLEADING EXPERIENCE, divisions of VARSITY SPIRIT LLC, act only as an agent in connection with the tour offered herein and its liability is limited. The travel services including air transportation, carriage by land, hotel accommodations, restaurants, and related services are provided by independent third parties not under the control of VARSITY SPIRIT LLC. VARSITY SPIRIT LLC shall NOT bear any liability to the passenger or any third party for any injury, damage, loss, accident, delay, or irregularity which may be occasioned either by reason or any defect, through the acts of defaults of any company or person engaged in conveying the passengers or in carrying out the arrangements of the tour and/or performance events, venues, etc. as a direct or indirect result of acts of God, dangers incident to fire, breakdown in machinery or equipment, acts of governments or other authorities, acts of terrorism, civil disturbances, strikes, riots, theft, unhealthy conditions, pilferage, epidemics, quarantines, medical, or customs regulations, or from any other causes beyond the control of VARSITY SPIRIT LLC. VARSITY SPIRIT LLC shall not be liable for any losses or additional expenses due to delay or changes in schedule or any other causes. The right is reserved to decline, to accept, or to retain any tour passenger should such person’s health or general deportment impede the operation of the tour to the detriment of other passengers. No refunds for tour portions or unused services can be made unless agreed prior to the scheduled deadlines. Your retention of tickets, reservations, or bookings after issuance shall constitute a consent to the above and agreement on your part to convey the contents herein to your traveling companions. Payment of any deposit of final payment shall be deemed to constitute consent be each passenger to these terms. Baggage is carried at the owner’s risk and baggage insurance is strongly recommended. It is also recommended that each participant in this tour have his or her own attorney review this RESPONSIBILITY DISCLOSURE NOTICE before indicated his or her consent by signing the reservation form.

Q:  How much spending money should I bring with me? A: That’s up to you. You will only need money for meals not included in the package and miscellaneous items such as snacks and souvenirs.  

Q:  What happens if I get injured or become ill during the event? A: We will have first aid staff on duty throughout the event. Additional medical treatment is at the expense of the participant.  

Q:  When do we need to arrive to Orlando? A: Normal arrival day is December 29. We do offer a limited number of extra nights on December 28   for those requesting an early arrival. Be sure to check the cost of an extra night room.  

Q:  My participant already has a uniform from the 2019, 2021 or 2022 Citrus Bowl Pre-Game Performance or Orlando Thanksgiving Tour. Is the uniform the same and do we get a discount? A: If your participant already has the uniform from the 2019, 2021 or 2022 Citrus Bowl Pre-Game Performance or Orlando Thanksgiving Tour , please indicate this on your uniform sheet and you may deduct $40 from your cost.  

Q:   We missed our deadline for registration and deposit…Are we too late? A:  Please call Customer Service at  800-238-0286 and select Option 2  for availability.  

Q:   How do we know what size uniform to order? A:   Watch this short  video  with instructions on how to properly measure for your uniform.  *Please note: Your current Varsity uniform will more than likely be a different fit than the uniform we use for Special Events.  

Q:  Can we visit both Universal parks? A: Yes! Your tickets allow you to visit both Universal Studios and Universal Islands of Adventure!  

Q:   What is the difference between Participant and Spectator pricing? A:   The uniform and pre-game performance is the only difference. Everything that is listed as INCLUDED in the tour package is available to everyone.  

Q:   Does everyone with the tour group have to stay for the entire game? A:   We schedule our buses to take everyone back to the hotel immediately following halftime.  However, if you would like to stay for the entire game you may sign up to do so. We will have a signup sheet available during registration in Orlando.  

Q:   I have males on my cheer squad.  How will they be incorporated into the performance? A:  All male cheerleaders and their cheer partner will perform with the Varsity staff.  Their routine will be taught during rehearsals in Orlando.  

Q:   What does the Mascot’s performance consist of? A:   All Mascots will perform on the field with the cheerleaders and dancers in their own school mascot costume.  

Q:   When will the mascots learn their routine? A:  All Mascots will receive a link to learn a portion of the performance.  The remainder of their routine will be taught to them during rehearsals in Orlando.  

Q:   Is the Mascot All-American pullover that’s included in the tour package meant to be worn over the mascot costume? A:  No. The pullover is for you to wear anytime.  Be sure to measure for your jacket without your costume on as exchanges are very limited.  

Q:   If we are flying to Orlando, how do I get my mascot costume there? A:  Check with the airline you are flying on in advance to find out their regulations and restriction on oversized luggage.

Ingredients:

• Crushed ice
• 2 ounces (¼ cup) vodka
• Juice from ½  Bee Sweet Citrus Navel Oranges
• 4 ounces (½ cup) ginger beer
• Champagne float
• For the garnish: orange wheel/wedge, fresh mint

Directions:

• Add ice to a copper Moscow Mule Mug

Alright, y’all, I had to squeeze in one last recipe before Christmas and why not let it be a cocktail recipe?!

I love this recipe you guys. It’s SO simple and extra fun (Hello champagne!) 

You can drink it on Christmas Eve, Christmas evening or whip one up to watch the ball drop on New Year’s! 

Why This Recipe is the BEST: 

I feel like Moscow Mules were one of the first cocktails that I ever drank and truly fell in love with. If you know me, you know that I’m more of a dry red wine type of gal but this one stole my heart! 

It’s made with just one type of liquor, vodka! – you guys know from my recipes like my Cranberry Orange Bourbon Fizz or my Simple Lemon Lime Margaritas that I always like to keep my mixed drinks simple and try to stick with one liquor only! 

It’s mixed with a generous squeeze of fresh lime which gives it a nice citrus kick and of course the best – GINGER BEER! I love ginger beer so much. It’s my go-to cocktail mixer. I love the spiciness that it adds to the drink. 

Side note: my favorite Ginger Beer to buy is the Trader Joe’s brand – it’s so affordable and it has extra gingery goodness in it! 

And you could just stop there with the ginger beer…but let’s end the year 2020 with a bang and add in a generous pour of fresh bubbly champagne! 

The champagne gives it SUCH a fun twist – it truly makes this drink shine!

The extra carbonation just adds such a lovely taste and it makes it extra festive – especially if you’re drinking it while celebrating the New Year! (Because let’s be honest, i think we are all ready for the New Year!)

No crazy cocktail shakers required – this drink is easy, breezy and so delicious! 

In your favorite copper mug (or just a normal cocktail glass!), add in the ice. 

Add in the vodka (I did around 2 oz). 

And then top with 3-4 oz of spicy ginger beer! 

Next, top it off with that freshly popped champagne! This is completely up to your preference – you can put as much or as little as you’d like in there. I put a generous pour for extra fun! 

Lastly, garnish with a fresh squeeze of lime, a lime wedge and if you’re feeling extra fancy, some fresh mint! 

Or, if you’re like us and your mint plant is invasive and won’t ever go away – go outside, pick a sprig and you’re ready for a cozy drink!

This Champagne Moscow Mule is a fun twist on a classic cocktail! With a generous pour of bubbly champagne to top - it’s the best drink to ring in the New Year! 

Ingredients

• 3-4 oz ginger beer
• 1/2 lime, squeezed
• champagne to top
• fresh mint/lime to garnish

Instructions

To a copper mug (or your favorite cocktail glass), add ice. Add in the vodka, top with the ginger beer and then top with the champagne! Squeeze with lime and then garnish with mint. Enjoy!
