The Very Best Time to Visit New York (by a local!)

When’s the best time to visit New York? New York experiences all four seasons, and often temperature extremes — but I think the best time to visit New York is in the fall from September to November.

That said, that’s just one small part of the year — and it could be completely different for you. You might hate that time of year if you came for festivals, or outdoor dining, or the cheapest prices. (And if you have kids or work in education, you might not be able to come then at all.)

So I set out to create the best guide on the best time to travel to New York, completely with temperature, atmosphere, crowd level, and event information.

I lived in New York for several years until recently, and living there was one of the great joys of my adult life. I know the city extremely well, and this guide is full of tidbits that you only get after living awhile in New York.

Like just how hot the 96th St. 1-2-3 platform gets in August. Or just how bad the crowds are on Fifth Avenue in December.

Or the incredible feeling you get when taking part in an activity with a huge crowd of strangers, whether it’s a rare eclipse or a surprise Janet Jackson concert in your neighborhood.

In short — New York is a one-of-a-kind city, and you are going to have a wonderful time here, not matter what time of year you decide to go to New York. Let’s get to the guide!

Best Time to Visit New York

The best time to visit New York is during the fall months: late September, all of October, and early November. This is for three main reasons:

The weather is fantastic. Nice, warm and cool temperatures that are perfect for strolling around outdoors. Some days you need no jacket; some days just a light jacket is perfect. One big difference from spring is that it doesn’t rain as often during the fall.

Crowds have thinned out. New York’s busiest seasons are from June through August and Thanksgiving through New Year’s. Kids are back in school and many families are averse to traveling so early in the school year, and families comprise a decent percentage of New York tourists.

Prices have dropped. New York is always expensive, don’t get me wrong, but hotel prices are much lower in the fall lower than during the summer months and the peak season between Thanksgiving and New Year’s.

And a bonus reason: fall colors. That’s just a bonus, in my opinion! You see the best fall colors in New York from mid-October to early November, peaking in late October. Don’t miss the fall foliage in Central Park, Prospect Park, and Fort Tryon Park and the Cloisters.

I recommend visiting New York during the fall months , from late September through early November. May and June are nice, too.

In my opinion, the best month to visit New York is October , for beautiful weather and gorgeous fall colors.

There’s lots to do in New York year-round, but we love September for family trips because most kid-friendly Big Apple attractions are empty.

In the winter temperatures are frequently below freezing, especially in January , but usually hover between 28-45 F (-2-7 C).

Festivals occur year-round in New York but there are many great ones in the summer, especially June , as well as between Thanksgiving and New Years’.

New York Weather

New York gets every kind of weather you can imagine . It experiences all four seasons and the weather fluctuates throughout the year.

In the winter you have plenty of subzero days and major snowstorms; the spring growsinto warmer and warmer temperatures, but with decent rain; summer is very hot with high humidity, and the fall is warm-to-cool with mostly clear skies.

There are pros and cons to each season in New York. Let’s break down each season one by one.

New York in Spring

Spring in New York is absolutely beautiful and a great time to visit . As long as you come during actual spring: early April through early June. March is still very much winter temperatures here.

Yes, New York has cherry blossoms, and they tend to bloom at the end of March or the beginning of April. They symbolize the beginning of warmer months ahead with their bright spring colors. Some of the best places to see cherry blossoms in New York are Central Park, Roosevelt Island, and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, which has a cherry blossom festival in April.

One of my favorite things to do in New York in the spring is to wake up early and take a long, leisurely walk through Central Park, enjoying the fresh cool air and the dogs enjoying off-leash hours.

It can be a cheerful time to visit after a cold winter, but many days can be rainy. The temperature is comfortable for walking around and not too hot or too cold. It’s good to have a light jacket and umbrella with you.

Also, you have those exceptionally warm days that pop up every now and then, usually in mid-April. I live for the first hot day of the year in New York because everyone empties into the parks and enjoys the glorious sunshine!

If you have a genie and can predict the future, THAT is the best time to go to New York — the first hot day of the year. But if you’re feeling lucky, aim for the last week in April.

New York in Summer

Summer weather in New York is very hot and humid, which can be glorious, but also difficult to handle. Ah, New York in the summer is quite the contradiction.

On one hand, summer is when New York explodes into festivals and events, from Pride to the Mermaid Parade to the Jazz Lawn Party on Governor’s Island. There’s outdoor dining, rooftop parties, street festivals, and even time on the beach at Jacob Riis or the Rockaways.

On the other hand, summer can be miserable. The smell of garbage is particularly pungent in New York at this time of the year. Waiting for the subway can be on a platform 10+ degrees hotter than the temperature outside. And subway cars that have lost AC are their own brand of hell.

Honestly, I’m a big summer fan, but in New York I spend a lot of time visiting museums and doing indoor activities. I recommend doing the same, finding lots of places you can escape to if it gets too hot.

One of my favorite things to do in New York in the summer is to take the Staten Island Ferry. It’s the best free activity in New York City, and standing outdoors on the ferry will give you some lovely breezes.

Yellow Leaves behind a lamppost in Central Park, NYC.

New York in Fall

Fall is a spectacular time to visit New York. It’s the best of every world, as I mentioned above: comfortable temperatures for walking around and exploring; mostly clear skies and limited rain; colorful fall foliage; and smaller crowds and lower hotel prices than peak season.

One thing I’ve noticed in my years as a travel writer is that September and October are MAGICAL. This is when kids go back to school and parents don’t want to travel that early in a new school year — so places are marvelously empty of kids.

Every fashionista knows that fall is the best season of the year for fashion — and New York is one of the most interesting fashion cities on the planet. Whether you go to Bryant Park for the shows or stroll through the streets of SoHo, fall is THE time for exploring fashion in New York.

One of my favorite things to do in New York in the fall is to get out my camera and explore different neighborhoods and their local cuisines: Prospect Heights for Caribbean curries; Flushing for Hong Kong egg tarts; Arthur Avenue in the Bronx for Albanian burek.

(Pretty different than the Times-Square-Empire State Building-Brooklyn Bridge-High Line tourist attractions route, don’t you think?)

New York in Winter

When you live there, winter in New York sometimes feels eternally long and bleak, but there’s nothing like the city under a fresh snowfall.

New York gets several major snowstorms during the winter months, most of them between early January and late March. (Though it’s not unheard of to have a snowstorm in December or even as early as November.)

This is absolutely gorgeous — New York under a fresh snowfall is so lovely to photograph, especially Central Park and any neighborhood with brownstones. But that only lasts a few hours, and if the snow is deep, the city can grind to a halt.

Should you visit New York in the winter? I always say that you should only come here if you know what our winters are like. If you’re from Chicago or Minnesota, come on in! You know what you’re getting into. Good winter boots are BEYOND essential.

But if you’re from Florida or Texas, I strongly urge you to come at another time. On the NYC subreddits there are always posts by travelers from warm climates who don’t know how to deal with the cold and aren’t enjoying their trip. (If this is you, go to Uniqlo or H&M and buy a bunch of winter gear. It will make it easier.)

Winter is also the cheapest time of year to visit New York — specifically early January through late March.

One of my favorite things I’ve ever done in winter is the no-pants subway ride! This event in January is organized over social media. Groups of participants ride a set route of the NYC subway together in full winter gear except pants, ending up in Union Square. Somehow it always ends up being the coldest day of the year, but that adds to the fun.

High Season and Low Season in New York

Generally speaking, high season in New York is during the summer months, from June through August. This is when you have the biggest crowds and the highest prices. There is also a second high season in New York between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, when New York goes all out for Christmas and the holiday season.

Some peak days in New York, when accommodation is at its most expensive, are New Year’s Eve, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

There are also some paradoxes during high season. On Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day, the city empties out as New Yorkers head for the beach. This can be a very pleasant time in local neighborhoods that don’t get a lot of tourists.

Low season in New York is from January to March. During this time you have winter weather and lots of unpredictable snowstorms. If you’re used to cold winters, this can be a great time to visit, as you’ll be able to enjoy lower hotel rates, visit uncrowded museums, and get cheap Broadway tickets.

Best Month to Visit New York

What’s the best month to visit New York? Usually I say October, but that’s not the whole story.

It depends on who you are and what kind of trip you want to have.

I’ve broken down every month in New York into atmosphere, weather, and events.

New York in January

January is the coldest month in New York and other than New Year’s, it’s not a busy time to visit. After the holiday season, prices drop and it’s one of the cheapest times of the year.

The average temperature in New York in January can range from 27 to 39 Fahrenheit (-3 to 4 Celsius). You can also expect snow in January, and likely multiple major snowstorms, in between a variety of sleet, rain, and wintry precipitation.

Events in New York in January include the Three Kings Day Parade in East Harlem, the world-famous Westminster Kennel Dog Show , and Broadway Week , when Broadway shows have 2-for-1 tickets.

New York in February

February is a slow month in New York and one of the cheapest months out of the year. The cold, snowy weather of February keeps tourists away.

Average temperatures in New York in February range from 28 to 41 Fahrenheit (-2 to 5 Celsius) and you can expect a few major snowstorms, along with various other wintry weather.

Events in New York in February include the Lunar New Year Parade in the city’s numerous Chinatowns, the beginning of the multi-month Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Gardens, and NYC restaurant week , when restaurants offer low-priced specials.

New York in March

March is the last of the cold months in New York and much more winter than spring. It’s still a cheaper time of year with fewer tourists because it’s too cold for spending much of the time outdoors.

You can expect average temperatures in New York in March to be 36 to 50 Fahrenheit (2 to 10 Celsius). There is usually at least one snowstorm in March as well, sometimes more than one, and the weather still feels like winter through the end of the month.

Events in New York in March include the St. Patrick’s Day Parade along Fifth Avenue, the New York International Children’s Film Festival , and the Macy’s Flower Show in their flagship store on 34th Street.

New York in April

April is when New York starts to awake into spring, which makes it a lovely time to visit New York. In the early days of April, you can find cherry blossoms blooming and colorful flowers all around. Temperatures are moderate, though you may have a few cold and hot days mixed in.

Weather-wise, it can be a bit all over the place — some rainy days, some sun, some foggy mornings, a lot of cloudiness — but the weather is warming up and spring has sprung.

Average temperatures in New York in April range from 45 to 61 Fahrenheit (7 to 16 Celsius), though you’ll probably enjoy one or two super-warm days near the end of the month!

Events in New York in April include the New York Easter Parade along Fifth Avenue, Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden , and Earth Day , which brings in a variety of events.

New York in May

May is a great month to visit New York, especially if you like flowers. Spring is in full effect, the flowers are lovely and temperatures are comfortable for being outside. It’s just before summer begins and tourists make their way to the city, so May is the perfect time to beat the major crowds.

You can expect the average temperature in New York in May to be around 54 to 72 Fahrenheit (12 to 22 Celsius).

Events in New York in May include Bronx Week , celebrating everything about the northernmost borough; NYCX Design , showcasing interesting designs of all kinds, and the Ninth Ave International Food Festival in Hell’s Kitchen.

New York in June

June marks the start of summer in New York, and if you have your heart set on a New York summer trip, we recommend June over hotter, more humid July and August. Early June is much more spring-like and you’l experience more rain, but by late June, sizzling summer has set in.

You can expect temperatures in New York in June to be around 64 to 79 Fahrenheit (18 to 26 Celsius), and for it to be much warmer toward the end of the month than the beginning of the month.

Events in New York in June include NYC Pride , a full and boisterous celebration of all things queer; the costume-filled Coney Island Mermaid Parade , and the New York Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors’ Island.

New York in July

July is the hottest month in New York, and there are plenty of tourists in the city at this time. You can expect humid, sticky weather that can get uncomfortable for spending much of your time outdoors.

The average temperature in New York in July ranges from 68 to 84 Fahrenheit (20 to 29 Celsius), and the humidity can make it feel even hotter.

Events in New York in July include the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island; Shakespeare in the Park , with performances in Central Park, and Harlem Week , a monthlong celebration of New York’s coolest neighborhood.

New York in August

August in New York is another hot and humid summer month. It’s also a month when many New York’s escape the city, so it might have a less-crowded feel in less-touristy neighborhoods. Tourist crowds begin to slowly disperse by the end of the month.

The average temperature in New York in August can range from 68 to 82 Fahrenheit (20 to 28 Celsius).

Events in New York in August include the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival on Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadows in Queens, the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival in the East Village and Harlem, and the US Open in Flushing Meadows, Queens.

New York in September

September in New York marks the start of fall and is one of the best months of the year to visit NYC. The air is a comfortable temperature, there are fewer tourists in the city, and the leaves start changing color. It’s a wonderful time of year and when New York is at its best.

Average temperatures in New York in September range from 61 to 75 Fahrenheit (16 to 24 Celsius). Early September is much more like summer than fall.

Events in New York in September include the Festival of San Gennaro , the patron saint of Naples, in Little Italy; the Armory Show , one of the world’s major contemporary art shows; and the fall edition of Broadway Week , when Broadway shows have 2-for-1 tickets.

New York in October

October is the best month to visit New York: full stop. It’s at the peak of fall, the leaves are all different colors, and everyone seems to be in a great mood. Prices and tourist levels begin to slowly drop and it’s the perfect weather for walking around outdoors.

You can expect average temperatures in New York in October to be around 50 to 64 Fahrenheit (10 to 18 Celsius).

Events in New York in October include the New Yorker Festival , where intellectual leaders come to give talks; New York Comic-Con , celebrating all things geeky; and of course Halloween, including the world-famous NYC Village Halloween Parade .

New York in November

November in New York is very much an in-between time of year. Fall is ending and winter is just beginning. You won’t really need to worry about snow at this point, unless there’s a rogue flurry, but it will start cooling down fast.

November can be a good time of year to visit New York because it’s not quite too cold to spend time outdoors. The Thanksgiving holiday, however, brings peak crowds and pricing.

You can expect the average temperatures in New York in November to range from 41 to 54 Fahrenheit (5 to 12 Celsius).

Events in New York in November include the New York City Marathon , which draws runners and spectators from around the world; the NYC Comedy Festival , which draws tons of big names; and of course the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade .

New York in December

December in New York is cold, but rarely very snowy. Some people think the best time to visit New York is during the Christmas season, so get ready for high prices and huge tourist crowds! If you enjoy the holidays, it can be a great time to visit New York, but it will be too cold to spend all of your time outdoors.

You can expect average temperatures in New York in December to be around 32 to 43 Fahrenheit (0 to 6 Celsius).

Events in New York in December include the Rockettes’ Radio City Christmas Spectacular ; the Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting ; and New Year’s Eve in Times Square .

Best Festivals in New York

New York throws some great festivals, especially in the summer and during the holidays. People from all over visit New York just to experience some of the festivals that take place each year.

Honestly, there are so many different festivals that we couldn’t possibly include them all in this post. Instead, here’s an overview of the best and biggest events of the year:

NYC Pride : In June, millions of people take place in NYC Pride, a series of events celebrating the LGBTQ community, culminating in a parade through downtown Manhattan. Nobody does pride like New York City!

Halloween: The New York City Village Halloween Parade takes place on Halloween night, October 31st, each year in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Lower Manhattan. It’s a great opportunity to get creative and dress up in costumes and enjoy the parade and parties all around New York.

Jazz Age Lawn Party : Located on Governors Island in June, this weekend-long event celebrates New York City’s prohibition era. It’s a fun opportunity to travel back in time, dress as someone from the 1920s, and enjoy an exciting and informative event related to American history.

Coney Island Mermaid Parade : Held in June on Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York, the Mermaid Parade is the largest art parade in the United States. It’s an unforgettable event and a great place to let loose and discover your inner sea creature.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade : Occurring on the fourth Thursday in November, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is the world’s largest parade and famous for its enormous balloons and performances on parade floats.

Christmas: New York gets into the holiday spirit from Thanksgiving to New Years’ Day. Around Thanksgiving, you can find Christmas markets, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, shows, lights, and displays throughout New York. (Pro tip: the best place to see Christmas decorations is Dyker Heights in Brooklyn. They go ALL OUT.) The events that take place make it an exciting time to visit.

Best Time to Visit New York with Kids

Is New York a good destination to visit with kids? Absolutely. New York is one of the safest big cities in the US and it’s unparalleled in terms of fun kid-friendly activities. If you take your kids here, they will remember it forever.

The great thing about New York is that it can be fun to visit any time of year! The best time to visit with kids is either in the spring or fall when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold and there are fewer tourists.

Here’s a New York family travel hack: if you homeschool or follow a non-traditional school schedule, September is when the rest of the world is back at school. Get ready to enjoy kid-friendly attractions without the crowds.

Cheapest Time to Visit New York

The cheapest time to visit New York is during the winter months: January, February, and March. Accommodation are at their lowest prices. Flights and trains tend to be cheap, too, outside of holiday weekends like Martin Luther King Day. And a lot of Broadway shows have cheap tickets available (nope, not Hamilton so much, but pretty much anything else).

However, keep in mind that New York is cheap for a reason: winters here are harsh. As I wrote in my What NOT to Do in New York post, if you’re from Minnesota, you know what you’re getting into. If you’re from Texas, you’re going to struggle.

Overall Best Time to Go to New York

Overall, I think October is the best month to visit New York — but if you have leeway, late September, all of October, and early November are the best time to go to New York. You will absolutely love the big city at this time of year.

Pride parties dancing through the streets in the summer, Broadway shows bringing the magic of the stage in the fall, holiday lights and magic in the winter, cherry blossoms galore in the spring…there’s no such thing as a bad time to visit New York City .

This abundance of seasonal activity means it’s hard to decide when to plan your trip. So whether you’re looking to nab a deal, go ice skating in Central Park, avoid the crowds or join them, here’s our guide to the best times to visit New York.

December to February is a holiday season like no other

During the holiday season, New York City is a beautiful sight covered in twinkling lights. Instead of snow-capped mountains or wooden ski lodges, visitors can enjoy the magnificent Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree , plus a mixture of goodwill and retail madness – Fifth Ave department stores (as well as Macy’s ) create festive, elaborate tableaux within their storefront windows. You don’t have to look far to find a concert or religious service packed with holiday tunes. The downside to all this festive cheer is that hotel prices skyrocket to summertime levels.

However, if you don’t mind risking a winter blizzard, there are deals to score during the long, cold winter months of January and February. Though the winter doldrums arrive after the frenzy of Christmas and New Year’s Eve, New Yorkers take advantage of the frosty weather, with outdoor ice skating and weekend ski trips to the Catskills . The odd blizzard and below-freezing temperatures make February a good time to stay indoors nursing a drink or a warm meal at a cozy bar or bistro. The fashion industry A-list descends on Manhattan for New York Fashion Week , while (most years) Lunar New Year celebrations make the city’s Chinatowns (there are many!) the places to be.

March to May is a great time for budget travelers

Springtime is another great season to try to score hotel deals. The summer crowds have yet to descend and the weather is generally pleasant this time of year (but there are no guarantees). The odd warm spring day appears and everyone rejoices – though that’s usually followed by another week of subzero dreariness as winter lingers on. Wearing green is essential on St Patrick’s Day, when a huge parade makes its way through Midtown.

Spring finally arrives in April, and the city’s new outdoor dining program officially opens for the season. Tree pits, window boxes, squares and parks abound with bright tulips and cherry trees start blooming – a spectacle you can enjoy at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden , on Roosevelt Island and throughout Central Park.

The weather becomes warm and mild, usually without the unpleasant humidity of summer – May is perhaps the best month for New York City weather. Broadway perks up again as shows open in advance of the June Tony Awards. In late May, uniformed sailors fan out on the town as Navy vessels dock on the Hudson for Fleet Week .

June to August is the perfect time for enjoying the outdoors

There’s nothing like summertime in New York City. While the weather often gets hot and sticky, the city also comes alive with a host of festivals, parties and events throughout the five boroughs. There’s the Mermaid Parade in Coney Island , the Puerto Rican Day Parade and the Pride March in Manhattan and the US Open in Queens . This is also the ideal time to check out the local beach scene .

The warm temperatures in June tempt New Yorkers out of their office cubicles and WFH setups to lie out in the city’s green spaces. Parades roll down the busiest streets and portable movie screens are strung up in several parks. SummerStage offers exciting programming after dark in Central Park all season long.

As the city swelters in July, locals escape to Long Island  or to beaches just a subway ride away . Still, it’s a busy month for tourism, as vacationing North Americans and Europeans fill the city. The Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks dazzle, while Shakespeare in the Park serves up some drama – for free.

Thick waves of summer heat generally set in between the skyscrapers in August as everyone heads to the seashore or gulps cool blasts of air-conditioning. Myriad outdoor events and attractions add life to the languid urban heat. The US Open kicks off at the end of the month. Hotel prices are at their highest in the summertime as the streets fill with tourists from all over the globe. If the humidity becomes a little too much, you can always take a day trip to recharge and renew – before heading out for another night on the town.

A traffic-filled street and above, neon signs of Broadway shows in New York City

September to November is the best time for cultural events and openings

After Labor Day, New Yorkers return to the city en masse and the city is abuzz with events, Broadway openings and new art exhibitions. Revelers dance down Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn in the West Indian American Day Parade , and festival-goers eat up sausage and peppers at Little Italy ’s Feast of San Gennaro . Hotel prices might dip a bit from the summer’s peak but don’t expect incredible deals.

As the season progresses and “sweater weather” sets in by October, the air gets crisper and the leaves start to turn. Brilliant bursts of color blossom across the city's parks as temperatures cool, ushering in one of the most pleasant and scenic months to visit NYC. Cultural delights continue, Comic Con invades the Javits Center and normally private sites open their doors for one weekend only during Open House New York . The Village Halloween Parade closes out the month with a creative bang.

As the leaves tumble, light jackets are replaced by wool and down. The headliner NYC marathon is tucked into the final days of pre-hibernation weather before families gather to give thanks – and perhaps watch the giant balloons pass by at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

NYC is a destination that you can visit all year round. Whether it is summer, winter, fall or spring, there is something for every traveler who wants to explore New York City, and its surrounding areas, too.

Our favorite time (we both agree) in NYC is May and June or September and October. When the summer is beginning, everything has bloomed from the spring and the air has mostly cleared of the allergies.

In the spring, it’s not super hot, yet, and the attitude in the city is nice and friendly. And, the days are still getting longer until June 21, so you’ll get some of the most daylight to get out and explore.

A white flowering tree in front of a house in NYC.

We also like September and October in autumn because it’s a nice cool after a hot summer has left us sweaty and sun-kissed. It’s very pleasant to walk around when the leaves start to change and the nights are crisp and cool.

Before daylight savings time in November, the sun will set around 6-6:30 pm, so there’s still plenty of daylight to walk around in and explore before dinner. Note, though, that after we change the clocks in late October or November, and we “fall back” until mid-March, the sun will go down between 4:30 and 5 pm.

Let’s talk about how all these factors affect your choice of when to make a trip to NYC, especially if you’re into seeing the sights, taking photos, hitting up your bucket list items and making the most of a trip you’ve been waiting for!

When is the cheapest time to visit NYC?

If I wanted to be half-joking, I’d say … never. New York City is notoriously an expensive place to travel (which is why we recommend so many free things to do in NYC .

Given NYC’s bountiful array of four very different seasons, along with some lovely holidays to celebrate in the city, the cheapest times to visit NYC are going to be the off season , and non-holiday weekends . I will explain.

When is the off-season for visiting NYC?

Given that the most popular times to visit NYC are May, June-July-August and September-October, due to gorgeous weather, long days and tons of things like events and concerts taking place outside, you’ll find that these months are typically high season.

High season is also any holiday weekend, when domestic travelers have three-day weekends fro work and make trips to NYC. Included in these weekends are the popular travel weekends of MLK Day weekend, Presidents’ Day weekend, Memorial Day weekend, July 4th weekend, Labor Day weekend, Veteran’s Day weekend, the second half of December leading up to Christmas week and New Year’s, and then New Year’s Day weekend.

You will find most off-season deals between January and April, save for those holiday travel weekends mentioned above! You may find deals on tours and other types of excursions in the less popular travel months. As always, the best deals are found in the middle of the week, which was what we learned and proved in our mid-week trip to nearby Montauk and the Hamptons.

Most expensive time to visit NYC

The most expensive times to visit NYC are during the beautiful and hopping spring, summer and early fall months, along with Christmas and New Year’s. Between Christmas and New Year’s Day, many Americans are on vacation from work, school and university, and it’s a great time to see NYC at holiday time.

The other expensive times to visit are popular holiday weekends like I noted above. If there is a three-day weekend, hotels can apply weekend rates to the Sunday night of the holiday weekend if the holiday falls on a Monday, for example. With Labor Day always on a Monday, hotels can apply an inflated rate for all three nights of a holiday weekend, from Friday to Monday.

Where to stay in NYC

NYC is home to LOTS of excellent hotel options. When traveling to NYC, where you stay is less important (in my opinion), unless the hotel is part of the thing that you want to experience. Because your days will be jam-packed, and NYC hotel rooms are known for being small, pick a place that is somewhat central and has a lot of different train options near by.

Explore NYC by month and season

New York City does have all four seasons. You get summer, winter, fall and spring, and they’re all very different.

Depending on the year, sometimes the seasons are more of a suggestion, as they start to blend together. You may get days in fall that warm back up to summer temperatures, or days in spring that wind back to winter temperatures. It’s a grab bag, and it is difficult to predict.

Each month does feel very different, as there are certain things the city offers. This is what makes New York City such a dynamic place to visit for traveling within the US, whereas places like Los Angeles and Miami are warm all year and you can always wear a T-shirt.

If you visit NYC in the summer, and then again in the winter, you will find incredible diversity between those two travel experiences. You’ll also remember how you were able to cool down with ice cream on the Hudson River Greenway in July, or see the Christmas displays at big department stores on Fifth Avenue in December as you’re warming up with hot cocoa in hand.

In fall, you’ll want to explore fall foliage and beautiful colorful views in Central Park, and in spring, look for cherry blossoms at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden or start attending outdoor festivals as the weather warms up for everyone.

A bee is sitting on a white flower in NYC.

Keep in mind that NYC also hosts other events that fall throughout the year, or one-off events like the Super Bowl or World Series (or other large events that bring in tens of thousands of visitors). These may affect the supply of hotel rooms, so book early.

NYC Special events by month

When NYC has a big event, like a parade or some big can’t-miss event, it is very exciting!

There will be special one-time occurrences that happen only every few years, but as for events and festivals that take place every year, here are a few cool things to do that are unique to each month.

Not a lot happens here during the first month of the year, in January. Most people are coming back from their Christmas through NYE trips and there are a lot of things closed on NYE and New Years Day.

January is one of the coldest months here and if it’s a snowy year, you can expect snow. If there is no snowfall, you can probably expect ice, nights that fall below freezing and days that are pretty short with sunsets around 4:30 pm.

Most people consider January as the worst time to visit NYC, but if this is your only chance, see below for what you can do!

Consider also that due to snowfall and ice, flights in January (and February) can be delayed or cancelled. If you’ll be flying into NYC, read more about all three airports for flying into .

Times Square on New Year’s Eve

Some travelers come to experience Times Square on New Year’s Eve, but we wouldn’t responsibly recommend that to you because it’s so, so cold.

Annual NYC No Pants Subway Ride

There’s a really funny thing every January in NYC called the No Pants Subway Ride and it’s a stunt put on by Improv Everywhere. Hundreds of people take off their pants and ride the subway all at the same time. Maybe you’ll run into this NYC phenomenon.

We personally like to take a trip to escape the cold during February, because February is typically the coldest month and we can find great deals to travel in the off-season, elsewhere.

We usually expect one or two of the coldest weeks all year to be in February. For this reason, people tend to also say February is the worst month to visit NYC, but … check out the ideas below for how to snaz up a February trip to the city.

Chinese & Lunar New Year Celebrations

What you can look forward to in February is Lunar New Year (Chinese New Year) celebrations in NYC!

The festivals usually happen in the beginning or middle of February, and depending on the year, they could be toward the end. Celebrations happen usually on the weekends with parades in Chinatown (Manhattan) and Flushing, Queens.

February Restaurant Week in NYC

February NYC Restaurant Week is another annual event in February for travelers who love restaurants. You can get a fixed meal from a special menu for a super low price at 500+ restaurants around the city! The details change every year, so be sure to surf this website .

March is hopeful because we know that the coldest months of winter are behind us. There can still be snow in March and depending on the year, most of the month is still pretty cold. We always forget that.

Things start to bloom with flowers, but you won’t see a lot of green, yet. This can be a good time to do a trip that has a mix of indoor and outdoor attractions.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade in NYC

The annual NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade is an excellent NYC tradition that takes place every March. Check the website to see when it will be held.

In April, the weather starts to get warmer and it makes us happy! The sun will also set later, the nights will be a dab warmer, and spring will have sprung.

TriBeCa Film Festival

In April, you can look into the TriBeCa Film Festival as something to do if you are a movie and film lover. Check back at the FAQ page for more about ticketing.

Cherry Blossoms at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Second, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden opens for viewing the annually-blossoming cherry blossom flowers in April every year. This is a great place in Brooklyn that’s worth a photo or Instagram and you can learn more about the annual BBG events here at their website .

In May, things really start poppin’ in NYC and it’s one of our favorite months to stay in the city, rather than travel elsewhere .

Five-Boro Bike Tour

If you are a biker, travel into NYC for the Five-Boro Bike Tour, a 40-mile “race” (it’s just for fun) where you will bike through all five boroughs of New York City, with stops along the way for snacks! If you don’t plan to bike, note that this event will close a lot of streets , so look closely at updates if you plan to drive into NYC.

Here is the official website .

Fleet Week takes place around Memorial Day, and in my own words, this is when lots of sailors and naval people come into NYC for a huge gathering. If you’re in Midtown Manhattan, Times Square or anywhere above 14th Street, you may see LOTS of sailors wearing white, taking photos and reveling in bars and restaurants!

Time Out New York provides a pretty good disclaimer about Fleet Week that you can read.

Smorgasburg

Smorgasburg is NYC’s greatest continual food festival of local vendors with treats, snacks and meals from around the world. The festival closes for winter and reopens in spring at various locations around the city. For food lovers, check the Smorgasburg site here .

Manhattanhenge May Edition

Manhattanhenge is one of our favorite secret things to do each year (twice a year, if you see July below). I’ll explain.

Because the Manhattan street grid falls at an angle and not an exact east-west directional, the sun will set with a huge glare and an amazing photo to take, on select days in May (before the summer solstice) and in July (after the summer solstice).

You can read about it in Gothamist , and please note that the dates are typically the same each year.

June is a joyous time in NYC before it gets too hot, and as the days are at their longest, with a sunset close to 9pm. Check out the things to do each year if you visit NYC in June.

Central Park SummerStage

Central Park SummerStage is a great time to see live music in NYC and it will be unforgettable. Check out the website to determine which venues will have shows during the year you visit! Performances start in June.

PRIDE Parade

“PRIDE” is a month-long fun month in June every year, culminating in a huge PRIDE parade that you won’t want to miss. It takes place in Midtown Manhattan. See more about NYC PRIDE here .

Puerto Rican Day Parade

Puerto Ricans are a huge community in the diverse communities of NYC, and each year on the second Sunday in June, the Puerto Rican Day Parade is a huge hit. Learn more about the Puerto Rican Day Parade here.

July starts to get hot in NYC, but the party is still on! With festivals, holidays and lots to see and do, July is an excellent time to plan a trip (although it is certainly high season for tourists).

July 4th Fireworks

The Independence Day Fourth of July Fireworks in NYC are a big deal, and everyone usually gathers on rooftops or spots along either the Hudson or East River to see them, depending on the year. Where will the fireworks be held when you visit? Check out this NYC Insider Guide for updates .

Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest

If lots of food grosses you out, stay away from the annual Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest, but if you love this type of stuff, then head to Coney Island, Brooklyn, for a very lively day of the year. To see photos of Coney Island, see our photo gallery .

Shakespeare in the Park

Theater lovers, listen up! Shakespeare in the Park takes place in Central Park (Manhattan) in July, and it is a wonderful thing to do during a trip to experience the arts and culture of this fine city. Check out the Central Park website for details.

Manhattanhenge II

Like we mentioned above, Manhattanhenge takes place twice a year. The second set of days for this natural and photographic phenomenon is usually around July 12-13, and yes, we know that by heart. Grab a camera, look up the sunset time, and plant yourself on 57th, 42nd, 34th or 23rd Street on a bright sunny day to see something really special in July.

August is a steamy month in NYC, so the city enjoys the outdoors, breaks a sweat and also has tips for how to cool down during the exciting month of August.

Summer Streets

NYC opens its streets and blocks them off to cars during Summer Streets, an annual event where people can play in the streets and enjoy the outdoors in an urban environment. There are performances, areas for playing, ways to run and bike, and more. See more about New York City Summer Streets here .

The US Open is a great way to see live tennis, and tickets are pretty affordable (if you can stand the heat). Get tickets in advance at the ticketing website .

NYC Beaches

August is high time to lay on the beach at any of NYC’s great beaches. You can swim in the water with no problem! August is when the water will be warmest. Think beyond Coney Island and check out some great beaches in our NYC free things to do guide .

A beach with a lot of people on it.

September is an absolutely perfect time to visit NYC and we would strongly recommend it. In the beginning of September, you’ll run into Labor Day weekend, a very popular three-day holiday weekend, and toward the end of September, it’ll feel more like low season.

Our secret is to plan your trip to NYC at the end of September so that you’re slightly toward fall. You’ll get some great weather, as seen in our photos of NYC taken on a sunny September day.

NYC Fashion Week (Fall/September)

NYC Fashion Week is a big draw if you’re into designer fashion or just a huge scene with lots of style. Check this website to see when dates are updated for the coming year.

Feast of San Genaro

Completely the opposite of the polished event above, the Feast of San Genaro is a ruckus of a street fair in Little Italy (Manhattan) and it’s when this neighborhood is brimming with people and street vendors with food. Wow! See more at the website .

West Indian Day Parade

Did you know that a million people take part in the West Indian Carnival, in Brooklyn, every year in September? This is a huge cultural experience to be a part of, celebrating this rich heritage of the Caribbean community in NYC. Don’t forget to see more on the website .

In October, many neighborhoods have beautiful fall decorations with pumpkins and deco, especially in the historic neighborhoods with gorgeous brownstones like the West Village and Fort Greene, which you can check out in our NYC neighborhood guide .

Viewing fall foliage in NYC (free!)

NYC has beautiful fall foliage, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! Take for example the neighborhood where we used to live, Fort Greene, Brooklyn . If you love the magic of trees turning red, orange and yellow in autumn, this is a can’t-miss off-the-beaten path neighborhood to visit for photos in October.

A red brick building with ivy growing on it in New York City.

Halloween Parade (West Village)

As for events, Halloween Parade (in the West Village) is one of the most important fall events in the city. With a huge parade of floats, costumes and entertainment, this is a parade to write home about.

Open House New York (OHNY)

OHNY is one of my favorite new events in NYC to attend, and I always mark my calendar as soon as the weekend is announced. During OHNY, NYC literally “opens its doors” to spaces that are regularly off-limits to the public, like historic spots, interesting public locations (recycling plants? Who knew!) and scenic spots (floating gardens in Red Hook, Brooklyn? Yes!). Check out the website at [OHNY.org]https://ohny.org/).

Comic Con NYC

We don’t have much experience with Comic Con, but it is certainly a draw for travelers who are into comics, anime and dressing up or being in a crazy scene. You will see some wild stuff at Comic Con in October! Check out the Comic Con website .

The first thing that comes to mind for November is that we fall into Daylight Savings time, so the sun starts setting at 4:45pm, not at 5:45pm. Keep this in mind if you book a trip in November and you plan to do a lot of outdoor stuff. The days will feel shorter.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

You can look forward to the Thanksgiving Day Parade if you come to NYC in late November. This is always a big parade on Thanksgiving morning and has lots of Broadway performers, huge themed balloons and floats and a bunch of celebrities!

If you need the up to date info, see the official website .

NYC Marathon

Recently, the NYC Marathon has become one of our favorite days of autumn. While it may sound funny to watch lots of people run 26.2 miles, the truth is that every neighborhood along the race route comes out to cheer, play music, sell cookies and wear funny costumes. It is such a sight to see!

See the NYC Marathon website to check out the route, and note that if you plan to drive into NYC on marathon weekend, it is recommended to avoid road closures.

A blue sky with white clouds in NYC.

The obvious thing to think about in December is the holiday season. Holiday markets in large spaces like Union Square Park and Bryant Park pop up as soon as Thanksgiving ends.

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

The first week of December will already have the holiday spirit, with the “Big Christmas Tree” at Rockefeller Center, ice skating rinks in public parks to skate at and festive themes in many neighborhoods. Rockefeller Center also hosts the Christmas Tree Lighting , which is a big draw for visitors.

Dyker Heights Christmas Houses

Another thing you can do in NYC in December is visit the Christmas Lights Houses in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn. It’ll be a trek, especially if you are staying in Manhattan, but you can see more about that here, at our guide of free NYC things to do and also our best photo spots in Brooklyn .

Best Time to Visit New York City - Full Month by Month Guide

New York is one of the world's most iconic cities – with its instantly recognizable views, world-famous museums and galleries, colorful neighborhoods, countless events, and the beautiful open spaces of Central Park. With so many sights and things to do, it is important to know the best time to visit NYC.

The best time to visit New York is from April to May or September to November. The weather is perfect for exploring Manhattan on foot or walking through Central Park, and there are plenty of events and festivals. It's also not as expensive as the peak summer months.

Whether you want to deep-dive into the city's impressive museums, hit the fabulous foodie scene, or immerse yourself in an unforgettable Broadway experience, keep on reading to find out more about what makes each season in New York so special and to help decide when to take your trip.

When should you go to New York City?

New York is a popular destination all year round, and you'll find plenty to enjoy whatever time of year you visit. The major attractions remain accessible, with dozens of festivals and other events, meaning that you can look out for new experiences even if you've visited the city before.

The seasonal weather changes and the busy peak season can make for a very different experience throughout the year. The city is cheaper and less crowded in January and February, and you can take advantage of 2-for-1 tickets to some attractions and shows, too. Many visitors prefer to wait for warmer spring days, though, when you can spend more time outside.

Fall is a popular time to visit as the weather stays relatively warm through October, and you can combine visits to city attractions with walks through Central Park in its stunning seasonal foliage.

From Thanksgiving to New Year, visitors flock to NYC's festive parades and events. The city is packed full of festive decorations, and you might also get lucky and catch Central Park in the snow for the ultimate in seasonal charm.

It's also a really popular destination during the summer vacation – this is more because it's a convenient time to travel than anything else – unless you want to see a specific seasonal event, then there's no particular reason to visit in the hot, humid NYC summer.

When to visit New York City - Summary

Best Time for Good Weather: Spring and fall see the best weather for exploring the city. Both seasons are mild, so it's no problem to spend time outdoors - although rain is possible throughout the year - and you can often enjoy bright spring blossoms or glorious fall colors under a beautiful blue sky. In contrast, the city can feel very hot in summer, amplified by the intense humidity New York is famous for. It often snows in NYC between December and February, and low temperatures mean you'll have to wrap up warm, so this won't be everyone's preferred time to visit.

Best Time for Saving Money: If you're willing to brave the wintery weather, you can save money on a January trip. Thanks to NYC Must-See Week and NYC Broadway Week, you can get 2-for-1 tickets to top attractions and shows. NYC Restaurant Week also takes place in January, so you can enjoy fixed-price menus at some of the city's top establishments. Hotels and flights are often at their cheapest in January, too. If the cold puts you off, Broadway Week returns for a second run in September!

Best Time for Restaurants: NYC Restaurant Week in January cuts the cost of touring some of the city's top establishments, so it's a great time to visit if you don't mind wrapping up warm. Later in the year, there's also the International Food Festival in May, which takes place on Ninth Street, the Big Apple BBQ Party at Madison Square Park in June, and a big Oktoberfest celebration. Don't worry if you can't make it to the city for any of the main foodie events - there's never really a bad time of year to indulge in New York's culinary scene, and any time between April and October, you can also head across to Brooklyn to visit Smorgasburg, the huge weekly open-air food market.

Beautiful colorful spring flowers with the famous Gapstow Bridge in the distance

Best Time for Families and Kids: If you're on spring break in April, then NYC is a great destination, as the weather should be good enough to spend time outside. The spring flowers in Central Park will be blooming, so head there to run off some energy and check out Central Park Zoo. The holiday season in November and December can also be a fabulous time for families to visit. Book a trip to Santaland at Macy's, where you might be lucky enough to get a slot to meet Santa himself. As we've mentioned, summer gets extremely hot, so it's not the ideal time to bring young children to New York, but you can enjoy the 4th of July fireworks or fit in a day trip to the beach at Coney Island or Jersey Shore - perfect if you need a break from quieter indoor attractions.

Best Time for Concerts and Live Music: In early summer, you can enjoy a huge range of outdoor concerts, including a free series by the New York Philharmonic in June, plus Shakespeare in the Park. There's a varied program of events at Summer at Lincoln Center in July, plus Broadway in Bryant Park performances. Highlights at other times of year include military bands and other live events at the Intrepid Museum during May's Fleet Week, with the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival taking place in August.

Best time to Avoid Crowds: January and February are the quietest times to visit the city. If you'd prefer to get the best combination of weather and crowds, then early May or November might be better. They're still popular times to visit the city, but just outside the main visitor peaks.

Best time to visit New York City

One of the great things about New York is that you can shape your visit to suit you and your travel companions. Whether you're in the city to shop, sightsee, or check out some of the world's coolest bars, there's something for everyone in NYC.

Best time to visit New York City for shopping

NYC is legendary for its department stores and boutiques, so whenever you visit, you can shop until you drop. On certain days in August, Summer Streets sees closures on Park Avenue, making it easier to enjoy this shopping mecca on foot.

For a different experience, seasonal farmers markets spring up across the city in October, including New York Botanical Gardens (Wednesdays) and the organic rooftop farm at Brooklyn Grange (Sundays).

Flagship store on busy crossroads in New York, with a big red and white sign that reads "The World's Largest Store"

Shopping in New York's huge department stores can be a spectacular experience in the run-up to Christmas. Macy's Herald Square puts on an unforgettable display, including beautifully dressed windows and the lavish Santaland.

Wrap up your day with a trip to Bryant Park Winter Village, where you'll find more than 100 kiosks showcasing small makers and boutique brands, followed by a spin on the iconic ice rink in Bryant Park.

Roll forward a few weeks, and many of the major department stores have huge sales as they head into the new year. Led by the big stores, big sales usually run at other points in the year, aligning with major holidays, including Memorial Day weekend (late May), Independence Day (4th July), Labor Day (early September), and of course Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

Best time to visit New York City for museums

New York is home to some of the world's best museums, with extensive and varied collections that you can often explore on an informative guided tour if you want to learn a little more about what you're seeing.

The downside to this is that they can often be very crowded since New York residents, tourists, and school groups all visit in high numbers. With fewer people visiting the city in January and February, the museums are usually a little quieter, and they're a great way to escape the cold.

Several museums also participate in January's NYC Must See Week, including MoMA and the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum - check online for details of 2-for-1 tickets.

For another chance to visit for free, head to the Upper East Side Museums in June for the Museum Mile Festival. For one night only, Fifth Avenue museums, including the Met, the Jewish Museum, the Smithsonian Design Museum, and the Africa Center, open up for free.

It's only a short event, so you won't be able to see any of the museums in depth, but with live music and other entertainment in the surrounding streets, it's an interesting way to get a taste of some of the world's best museums.

Come September, when the summer vacation period ends, many museums, galleries, and theaters launch new exhibitions, events, and shows after Labor Day. If you want to be the first to see new displays or catch the informative events that often accompany the opening weeks of an exhibition, then this is a great time to schedule your trip.

Best time to visit New York City to explore its neighborhoods?

Manhattan is famous for its diverse neighborhoods, which include Midtown, the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Hell's Kitchen, Greenwich Village, the Meatpacking District, and Chelsea. Plus, there are some great places to explore in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.

NYC is a great place to explore on foot - you can really feel the differences between the neighborhoods this way - so we'd suggest visiting during spring and fall when the weather is best for spending time outdoors.

Throughout the year, events take place that let you experience a neighborhood at its best, and these are also great times to visit. In June, you can see the Coney Island Mermaid Parade - a really unique celebration - or catch the annual Pride March at the end of the month.

You'll also find a host of linked events taking place across Greenwich Village. Later in the summer, Harlem Week is a 10-day event in August that includes live music and varied events to celebrate the neighborhood's multicultural community.

Little Italy is a must-see in September, when San Gennaro Festival brings elaborate parades, live music, foodie celebrations and even a meatball eating contest.

Head back to Greenwich Village at Halloween for the biggest Halloween parade in the world. Come in costume, and you can join in – no registration is (currently) required.

Best time to visit New York City for events and festivals?

New York City is famous for its parades and multicultural events – with so many taking place throughout the year, you have a good chance of being able to see one during your trip.

The festival year kicks off in late January or February with Lunar New Year. Events take place across Chinatown and the spectacular parade runs between Mott Street and Manhattan Bridge.

You can also see colorful parades if you're visiting over St Patrick's Day in March or Easter, when a parade of beautiful bonnets heads along 5th Avenue towards Central Park.

The city's large Mexican population celebrates Cinco de Mayo in style in May. There are celebrations across the city, but one of the main events is the parade, which runs near the northern end of Central Park.

If you're in the city over the Memorial Day holiday at the end of the month, head to Flushing, Queens, for the largest Memorial Day celebrations.

Held in Brooklyn in September, there's a huge celebration of Caribbean culture to coincide with Labor Day, which includes the famous West Indian Day Parade. And, of course, to round up the year, you have the huge Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, which is always a major event in the city.

There are several arts festivals throughout the year for a culture fix during your trip. Some of the biggest are the Tribeca Film Festival in April, the Queens World Film Festival in June, and September's Brooklyn Book Festival.

Best time to visit New York City for sightseeing?

We've already mentioned the hot-and-cold New York climate, which can really impact your sightseeing experience. For most people, a trip to New York will be packed full of unforgettable experiences despite the season, so it's often a case of packing for the time of year.

Tourist boat near the Statue of Liberty on a sunny day with some clouds

Even so, you can enjoy some parts of the city more easily at certain times of the year. Central Park is stunning in the spring and fall, when you can enjoy long, relaxed walks, stop to watch a street performer in the sunshine, and enjoy iconic views of the city and its famous green space.

To appreciate the Manhattan skyline at its best, an evening boat trip is an amazing addition to a city break, but visit in late spring or early fall so that the temperatures stay pleasant even after sunset.

Worst time to visit New York City

As you've already discovered, July and August are hot, humid and crowded, plus you'll run the gauntlet of sudden summer rain storms.

Since it's such a popular destination for families during the school vacation, hotel rates, and flight prices are even higher than at other times of the year. You're likely to pay a premium if you opt to stay in one of the few hotels, especially if you are after one with a pool.

We'd recommend taking a trip at other times of the year if you have the option, but if you do find yourself heading to the Big Apple in the hot summer months, you'll still be able to enjoy all of the city's main attractions. Just make sure you add in extra stops to cool down and stay hydrated.

New York travel seasons

Yellow cabs driving through New York's Times Square with advertising billboards and bright lights all around.

High Season for Tourists

Summer is peak season in New York, but although there are plenty of festivals and events to enjoy, it's not necessarily the best time to visit the city if you have other options.

The heat and humidity can get in the way of enjoying the city at its best; many of the attractions are very crowded, and hotel prices are at their highest.

Shoulder Seasons

Shoulder seasons are spring and fall, which, in our view, are the best seasons to visit NYC. Temperatures in April and May, and from September to November, are perfect for exploring the city. Plus, crowds are lower, and there are sometimes better prices on hotels.

Low season is January and February, mainly due to the colder weather and the fact that all the fabulous holiday displays have just closed down for another year.

It's the cheapest time to visit the city, and you'll still have a great time, but you'll be able to enjoy more of the city's outdoor attractions at other times of year.

Weather in New York City across the year

Average monthly temperature and rainfall for new york, new york city weather by month.

  • New York City weather in January: January is the coldest month of the year, with temperatures dropping as low as 26 degrees Fahrenheit. There are an average of 4 snowy days throughout the month, with over 8 inches of snow expected. It's down to luck whether it's heavy enough to turn the city into an Insta-friendly winter wonderland. The average high temperature is a chilly 39 degrees Fahrenheit so pack accordingly.
  • New York City weather in February: February sees the least rainfall, on average, but makes up for that by being the snowiest month in NYC. Heavy snowstorms are possible, and if you're not used to these conditions, it's important to check for local advisories. Even if it doesn't snow, February is cold, with average lows of 29 degrees. In fact, it's possible for temperatures to drop much lower throughout the winter – so check the forecast before you travel in case you need to pack extra layers for a super-cold snap.
  • New York City weather in March: The temperature starts to rise in March, with average highs up to 52 degrees Fahrenheit and average lows now hovering just above freezing. There's still a small chance of snow, but you're much more likely to encounter rain. Between March and December, average rainfall sits consistently between 4.1 and 4.6 inches.
  • New York City weather in April: Although there's still a very slim chance of snow if you catch a late cold spell, April is usually a much warmer month. The average high temperature is 64 degrees, but if you're lucky, it can peak at around 10 degrees higher still. The nights will still feel much cooler, so pack accordingly.
  • New York City weather in May: May is usually one of the best times to visit NYC for the weather. The average temperature is a very pleasant 72 degrees, which you can often enjoy under a clear blue sky. It's still a little unpredictable – there are often cooler days and, as summer approaches, higher temperatures are possible too.
  • New York City weather in June: By June, the NYC summer will be starting to take hold. The temperature sits around 80 degrees Fahrenheit but can feel much warmer when you factor in the warming effect of being in such a built-up environment. Thunderstorms are possible, but so are cooler periods when the temperature drops.

  • New York City weather in July: July is hot and humid in NYC, with temperatures often exceeding 90 degrees. If a heatwave is going to hit, it's most likely to be in July, so be prepared for several days of non-stop sweltering weather. Across the month, there's an average total rainfall of 4.6 inches, but the daily rainfall is very small – it's the chance of a sudden and heavy thunderstorm, which increases the average!
  • New York City weather in August: The average August temperature remains around 84 degrees, which can still feel very uncomfortable. Fortunately, the chances of a heatwave are lower in August compared to July. Night-time temperatures stay high, which can make it difficult to sleep if you're staying in accommodation without air conditioning.
  • New York City weather in September: As fall approaches, temperatures decrease during September. The average daytime high is 76 degrees Fahrenheit, but this will be closer to 70 degrees by the end of the month, and summer thunderstorms evolve into a few days of persistent rain. Night time temperatures will be much more comfortable by the end of September.
  • New York City weather in October: With an average daytime temperature of 64 degrees, October can be a very pleasant time to visit New York. The evenings are cooler, as you might expect, but rarely fall below 50 degrees. There's a much higher chance of rain getting in the way of your plans, and with the falling temperatures, rainy days will feel much cooler at this time of year.
  • New York City weather in November: Daytime highs of 55 degrees Fahrenheit mean you can often enjoy time outdoors all through November. There's a very low chance of snow, although early wintery spells can make the temperatures drop much lower.
  • New York City weather in December: The weather in December is variable so it's best to plan for some indoor activities during your stay. Some days will be bright and mild, with temperatures occasionally reaching well beyond the average high of 44 degrees. There's also a chance that you'll end up visiting during an early cold spell - temperatures can fall below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, particularly later in the month, and there's the first significant chance of snow.

Getting to New York City used to be notoriously expensive, but we've been seeing more and more good deals on airfare in recent years. The key is to avoid peak season which, usually, is May through August, with a bustling holiday period from November until the end of the year.

Analysts at Hopper and Skyscanner in 2019 determined that you can typically find the best deals on domestic flights to New York City right after the holidays, with prices in January and February the cheapest you can get all year. Hopper found that during these early-year winter months, domestic airfare costs under $200 round-trip, on average, from destinations across the U.S.

September will usually yield good deals, too, right after the back-to-school rush, when round-trip tickets average $224. In order to score the best deals, Hopper says you should plan to book your tickets between four to nine weeks in advance. Skyscanner also recommends booking at least a month in advance.

You can expect hotel rates to fluctuate as well, though demand tends to be high throughout the year because New York gets so many business travelers. According to Booking.com , the best deals on hotel rates can usually be found in February, when you can expect to pay 50% less than in October, which has historically been the most expensive month of the year.

According to Hopper, Sundays are generally the least expensive day to check into a hotel in New York. Planning to spend a weekend in the city? You can expect to pay an 18% premium at hotels. Hopper recommends booking your hotel just one to two weeks in advance, when prices begin to drop, but warns there will be less availability, so you might not get the exact room or hotel you want.

Because of the global climate crisis, the weather in New York seems to be getting more unpredictable every year. Generally, however, you can expect frigid temperatures and snow in winter (December through March) and sweltering heat in the summer, especially July and August, coupled with severe thunderstorms.

For comfortable weather, your best bet is to visit the city in the spring (April and May) or fall (September through November), when you can enjoy the fall foliage in the city's parks while sipping a spiced seasonal latte.

In terms of cultural events and happenings, the months of October through May would normally have the busiest calendars. That's when major museums mount blockbuster exhibitions, new Broadway shows debut and the opera, ballet and concert seasons are in full swing. Cultural institutions tend to have less programming in the summer, when many New Yorkers escape the city on weekends, but there are street fairs, outdoor concerts and film screenings, as well as Shakespeare in the Park and other events.

When to visit New York City for events and festivals

This is the City That Never Sleeps, so when life returns to normal, you can expect to find festivals and events worth traveling for all year long. New Yorkers tend to go all-out for holidays such as Independence Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve. There are also tons of niche festivals, parties and events throughout the year.

Winter events

New York can be quite magical over the holiday season , when the streets are decked out in lights and garlands and department stores put up their most elaborate window displays. The giant Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center is usually lit in front of a live audience each year at the junction of West 49th and 50th Streets as well as Fifth and Sixth Avenue and is broadcast on NBC as well. And every New Year's Eve, the Ball Drop draws approximately 1 million people to Times Square (though we expect it might look a little different entering 2021).

From November through January, the Rockettes would usually perform their Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall with the New York City Ballet performing The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center. There are winter markets with vendors selling gifts and seasonal specialties at Bryant Park, Union Square, Columbus Circle and even inside Grand Central Station. Many hotels, restaurants and bars deck their halls for the holidays and offer seasonal specialties, too. If you're planning ahead for 2021 and beyond, these are some of the classic New York festivities to expect.

Spring events

After a long, cold winter, New Yorkers tend to come out of hibernation in the spring and many outdoor bars and restaurants reopen for the season. The Tribeca Film Festival draws actors, directors and their fans to the city in Aprill for a series of film premieres, red carpet events and parties. And the first Monday in May brings the biggest star-studded event of the season: The Met Gala, whose theme coincides with the exhibit at the Met's Costume Institute.

Summer events

June is Pride Month in New York City, with events and festivals usually taking place almost every day and culminating in the world's largest Pride Parade. In July, New York puts on one of the best Independence Day celebrations in the country, with a spectacular fireworks show and parties across the city.

There are fun seasonal activities too, like the annual Summer Streets celebration, Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacourt Theater in Central Park, outdoor concerts and film screenings at Bryant Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park and other green spaces. You'll also find plenty of food trucks and festivals such as Smorgasburg — a series of open-air food markets with specialties from local vendors in Brooklyn and beyond — on weekends during a typical New York City summer.

Fall events

Fall not only brings some of the best weather but also some of the best holidays and events. Archtober is celebrated over the entire month of October, with hundreds of architecture-focused tours, exhibits, talks and events like Open House New York, which throws open the doors to some of the city's most incredible off-limits sites. October also brings Halloween, which is a big deal in New York City. The Greenwich Village Halloween Parade draws New Yorkers of all stripes to march through the streets in elaborate costumes.

In November, it seems like the whole city comes out to cheer on more than 50,000 runners who participate in the New York City Marathon. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is one of the world's largest parades and is broadcast all over the country.

For travelers who prefer something off the beaten path, there are plenty of other, more niche events, such as New York Fashion Week, Pickle Day — a Lower East Side tradition — the Brooklyn Book Festival, the New Yorker Festival, the New York Comedy Festival and the Festival of San Gennaro.

Bottom line

There really is no "best" time to go to New York City, because every time of year has its own charms and novelties. But first-time visitors generally get the most out of a visit in the spring or fall. January and February offer the best deals, but those are also the coldest months, so you have to decide if the trade-off is worth it. (And you'll need to pack your puffiest winter jacket.)

The best day to check into a hotel is on a Sunday, and, if you're flexible about where you want to stay, you're more likely to get a good deal on a room if you wait to book until a week or two ahead of time. Just be sure to book your flight at least a month in advance.

The Best Times to Visit New York City for Lower Prices, Fewer Crowds, and More

These are the best times to visit New York City — and the worst.

cheapest time to visit new york

Between the mouthwatering food (pizza and bagels, anyone?), glimmering skyscrapers, and vibrant arts and culture scene, it’s safe to say New York City offers something for everyone, regardless of age or interest. Don’t believe us? Just take it from travel advisor Rachel Soleil Lerch of Jetset World Travel , a Virtuoso agency, who tells Travel + Leisure , “The convergence of cuisine, art, and cultural experiences creates an atmosphere that crackles with a raw energy that has to be experienced to be believed.” Fora co-founder and travel advisor Henley Vazquez echoes these sentiments, describing the city as “a true melting pot of cuisines, architectural styles, and things to do.”

Valerie de Leon/Travel + Leisure

Before you jump into trip-planning mode, keep in mind that the best time to visit New York City ultimately depends on what you’re looking for, be it nice weather, fewer crowds, or lower prices. Ahead, find a brief breakdown of New York City’s tourism seasons:

  • High Season: Late May through early September and November through December
  • Shoulder Season:  April through mid-May and September through October
  • Low Season: January through March

Best Times to Visit New York City for Smaller Crowds

According to Soleil Lerch, the best times to visit New York City for smaller crowds are mid-winter (January and February) and late spring (late March through late April). “In these quieter periods,” she says, “slip on a cozy jacket or a stylish rain poncho and take the opportunity to see a more intimate side of NYC.” What’s more, visiting during these times affords you the incredible opportunity to experience New York City like a local. As a bonus, you can also take advantage of lower rates on lodging, which means you can score incredible deals on some of New York City’s best hotels — but we’ll dive deeper into this in a bit.

Best Times to Visit New York City for Good Weather

Per Vazquez, the best time to visit New York City for good weather depends on what you’d consider “good weather.” For example, says Vazquez, “I love the summer because there are outdoor concerts and you can walk everywhere.” However, the travel advisor is also quick to note that many people may not like the heat. In this case, it’s best to visit in the fall, when “the leaves are changing and the air is crisp.” During this time, travelers can still partake in outdoor activities and cozy up inside the city’s best restaurants and bars. Soleil Lerch also tells T+L that fall is a great time to visit for good weather — though she also recommends springtime, with the “delightful weather” being “ideal for immersive exploration on foot – the best way to experience its vibrant neighborhoods.”

Best Times to Visit New York City for Lower Prices

Budget-conscious travelers — or pretty much anyone who loves a good deal — should plan on visiting New York City in mid to late winter. Not only can travelers snag great hotel rates, but they can also enjoy lower airfare and cheaper tickets to attractions like Broadway shows. Don’t feel like bracing for the cold but still want to enjoy an affordable vacation to one of America’s top cities ? If the answer’s yes, then consider a late summer trip. “Particularly in late summer,” explains Soleil Lerch, “locals seek respite from the city's heat, creating more breathing space (and walking room!) for visitors, resulting in more favorable rates.”

Best Times to Visit New York City for Festivals and Events

New York City is renowned for its many year-round events and festivals, which rightfully attract travelers from across the globe. Movie buffs of all ages should plan their trip around the city’s most renowned film festivals such as the Tribeca Film Festival (which takes place each June) and New York Film Festival (which occurs every fall). In springtime, travelers can admire blooming cherry blossoms as part of the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens’ Sakura Matsuri Brooklyn Cherry Blossom Festival . Culinary connoisseurs, on the other hand, may opt to visit in October so that they can attend the famous Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival .

Visit during the summer months to enjoy a plethora of outdoor activities, events, and concerts, including SummerStage, which offers nearly 80 free concerts in Central Park and other parks throughout the five boroughs. Bryant Park will also host over 20 free outdoor performances as part of its Picnic Performances summer program. Theater-goers, on the other hand, will love Shakespeare in the Park .

Travel to New York City during the holiday season and prepare to be dazzled by the festive event programming, including the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting , incredible Christmas light displays, cheery holiday markets (including Bryant Park’s Winter Village and Union Square’s Holiday Market ), and ice skating opportunities all throughout the boroughs.

Worst Times to Visit New York City

New York City offers an abundance of things to see and do all year round, meaning there is no “bad” time to visit. However, if it’s warm weather you’re after, steer clear of the city in the winter. What’s more, says Vazquez, “a snow-covered city is only beautiful for a few moments before people and cars mess it up” and that “it’s not usually pleasant to be out and about.” However, that’s not to say the city isn’t worth visiting then — especially if you’re craving an affordable and (virtually) crowd-free escape. With this in mind, Vazquez recommends counteracting the cold weather by taking advantage of the city’s many museums, shops, and indoor spaces like the Oculus and Brookfield Place, which are connected underground. Conversely, while a summer trip to New York City means warm, sunny weather, you can certainly expect to pay significantly higher rates for hotels and attractions — plus lots (and lots) of tourists.

The Best Time to Visit New York City: The Fall

Daily Average Temperatures: September (76°) | October (64°) | November (55°)

I’m not usually one for definitive statements, but in this case it applies: Fall is the best time to visit New York City. New York in autumn a sight to behold. From the fall foliage engulfing Central Park to businesses getting ready for the holidays, the city is so charming it’s surreal!

Fall is also the best season in NYC thanks to the pleasant weather. A sweater is more than enough to stay warm, which leaves the door open to being both stylish and comfy. Not to mention fall is when the holiday celebrations kick off, Halloween and Thanksgiving blanket the city in decor.

When to visit New York City, Central Park bike riders

Great Weather: Temperatures in New York City can be deceiving because many first-time visitors don’t take walking into account, which makes it feel warmer. A brisk 60°F (15°C) might be cold if you’re standing in place. But after a few minutes of walking it’s easy to start shedding layers.

The Foliage: There are more than 5 million trees in New York City, and during the fall they turn the city into a vibrant canvas full of vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. The colors make a casual stroll through a neighborhood a memorable experience.

The Kickoff to the Holiday Season: Fall is like a Friday before the weekend, the lead-up to the holiday season. Depending on when you visit New York City in the fall, storefronts, homes, and restaurants begin decorating and putting the holiday season front & center.

Early Sunsets: Sunsets in early September are around 7:30 PM, but come late November they’re hovering around 4:30 PM. Getting dark early puts a time-constraint on certain outdoor activities, which is a con for visiting NYC in the fall.

Dipping Temperatures: Folks who get cold easily might think fall is the worst time to visit New York City, especially later in the year. So long as you’re bundled up it’ll be okay, but for some folks it can be a deterrent to visiting in autumn.

The Second Best Time to Visit New York City: Spring

Daily Average Temperatures: March (52°) | April (64°) | May (72°)

Spring might be the best time to travel, period. It’s also one of the best seasons to visit New York City. Mild temperatures give way to perennial blooms that cover the city in color and trees begin to grow back their canopies offering shade from the glistening sun rays.

Not to mention, winters in New York City can be brutal (more on that later), so locals are excited to leave the confines of their apartments in the spring and give the city a contagious energy. Outdoor dining begins to surge in popularity, and NYC’s 1,700+ parks become teeming with life.

Beautiful Blooms: Between the resurgence of tree’s green canopies, the pink hues of cherry blossoms, and the inspiring display of tulips, the best time to visit New York City might be the spring! The blooms begin as a slow trickle in early spring before drenching the city in color come late spring.

Outdoor Activities: With the warmer weather, spring is one of the best times to visit NYC for outdoor activities. You can take a bike ride along the Hudson River Greenway, go for a hike in the Ramble in Central Park, or rent a paddle boat in Central Park Lake.

Lower Hotel Rates: Hotel rates are typically lower in the spring (especially in March) than they are in the summer, which makes spring an affordable season to visit New York City.

Allergies: Spring blooms are both a blessing and a curse, because allergy season follows the flowering foliage. Those who suffer from allergies should come prepared with allergy-alleviating medicine, or swing into a pharmacy upon arrival.

Unpredictable Weather: Spring weather in New York City can be fickle, with occasional days of rain, wind, and (rarely) even snow. When deciding what to pack for NYC in the spring lean towards layers.

Take a free ferry to Staten Island (even if you just take the ferry back), or visit Ellis Island and climb the Statue of Liberty. Don’t forget to check out the cherry blossoms on Roosevelt Island or the hammock grove on Governors Island!

Third Best Season to Visit New York City: Winter

Daily Average Temperatures: December (44°) | January (39°) | February (43°)

Winter in New York City is notorious for its bitter cold, but the holiday season in December picks up the slack for January and February. The romance of Christmas lights around every corner, decorated restaurants and myriad of Christmas shows give the city a Hallmark movie like vibe.

Come January and February flights, hotels, and attraction prices plummet, so budget travelers will rejoice hearing that the winter is the most affordable time to visit New York City. So long as visitors come prepared with winter coats and warm layers, NYC in winter is a viable option.

Holiday Decorations: Holiday revelers will agree that winter is the best time to visit New York City thanks to an over-the-top array of decorations in December. They cover storefronts, restaurants, neighborhoods and more.

Less Crowds in January & February: Those who hate crowds will think winter is the best season to visit NYC, so long as they steer clear of December. More than 6.5 million tourists visit NYC between Thanksgiving and Christmas, but come January the city becomes barren.

Inclement Weather: New York winters are notoriously cold, with average highs hovering around freezing (32°F) and lows dipping into the teens or even single digits. Wind chill can make it feel even colder, so be prepared to bundle up in layers.

Early Sunsets: Winter days in NYC are shorter with fewer hours of sunshine, which can affect mood and energy levels. Make sure to plan indoor activities and pack accordingly for the limited daylight.

Have to Pack & Carry Layers: Bundling up when visiting New York City is a necessity, but during the times folks step inside to shop or eat the layers start to come off and become annoying to carry.

Best Time to Visit New York City: Summer

Daily Average Temperatures: June (80°) | July (84°) | August (84°)

I take no joy in ranking summer as the worst time to visit New York City, but one of the seasons had to come in last. Although the city is at its most accessible (rooftop bars, outdoor dining, bustling parks) the heat can be draining, and the crowds can be frustrating.

And if you sweat easily like I do? Lord, have mercy. In the suburbs it’s easy to jump from an air-conditioned house to an air-conditioned car to an air-conditioned store, but in New York? We walk! Carrying water and stopping for breaks are paramount while visiting New York City in the summer.

Outdoor Activities Galore: In the summer, NYC becomes a haven for picnics, sunbathing, and outdoor concerts. Rooftop bars buzz with life, street performers add vibrancy to sidewalks, and various outdoor festivals, from Shakespeare in the Park to Pride celebrations, fill the calendar with entertainment.

Longer Days: With ample daylight it’s easy to pack more into your itinerary , spending more time exploring neighborhoods, visiting iconic landmarks, and enjoying evening strolls through the city.

Vibrant Events and Festivals: Summer marks the peak season for outdoor events and festivals. From vibrant street fairs to the annual traditions like the Macy’s Fourth of July firework show, there’s something for everyone.

Humidity and Heat: Summer temperatures can be pleasant, but the humidity can make it feel hotter, especially in crowded areas. Pack light, breathable clothing and stay hydrated to combat the heat.

Higher Travel Costs: Flights and hotels are generally more expensive during peak season (June-August). This is especially true around major holidays like the Fourth of July.

Crowds and Congestion: Expect larger crowds at popular attractions, museums, and even on public transportation. Be prepared for longer lines, limited space, and a bustling atmosphere, which can be overwhelming for some visitors.

If you’re NOT looking for in-depth explanations and just want a quick summary of the best time to visit NYC , then here it is.

Generally speaking, the best time to visit NYC is between April and June or between September and early November . Not only is the weather still warm(ish) and pleasant, but you’ll also avoid the intense crowds (and high prices) associated with peak tourist season.

In contrast, the cheapest time to visit NYC is between mid-January and the end of February . Not only are flight and hotel prices super cheap, but there are a ton of great discount events that take place at this time of year, including restaurant week, hotel week, Broadway week, and more.

What is the cheapest month to visit New York?

The cheapest months to visit New York coincide with the low tourist season. So, for those looking to visit New York on a budget, be sure to plan your visit any time between January and March.

See, after the peak holiday season prices drop, on things like hotels and flights into New York City. Plus, in January, you’ll still find many Christmas decorations on display, just waiting to be enjoyed.

Another bonus of visiting in January is that the first of two Broadway Weeks kicks off. During this week, you can score two for one tickets to many popular shows. You also won’t have to contend with the masses that visit during peak season.

So, you’ll find more tickets available to the year’s top shows! However, keep in mind that the cheapest month to visit NYC does not mean it’s the best time.

In fact, January in NYC is actually the coldest month of the year and routinely sees the most snow. Accordingly, average temperatures include daytime highs of 36.5°F and nighttime lows of 26.1°F.

Therefore, pack plenty of warm clothes if you plan to visit New York during the cheapest month there.

How many days do you need in NYC?

Many locals (me included) will say that even after years of living in the city there are still so many things to do and see! So much so that there is no right answer to how many days you need in New York.

That said, if you’re looking for a quick trip, two days in NYC will allow you to see the highlights. However, I recommend at least a f our-day NYC itinerary. Within four or five days you’ll be able to see the main sights without rushing.

If you have limited time, it’s best to plan ahead of time to help maximize your trip. Decide on the top places you want to visit and book your accommodation close to these sights to make the most of your time.

It also helps to book tickets to top attractions well in advance so that you can avoid long lines upon arrival.

What time of the year is best to go to New York?

So, you’ll still find the warmth of the sun but the humidity will be waning. Rain and storms are also much less frequent than in the summer.

Plus, visiting in September means you’re avoiding the summer vacationers. So, the crowds and wait lines are more manageable. Scoring reservations for top restaurants is also more attainable too.

So, if you’re looking for great weather and plenty of things to do then September is the best month to visit New York City!

The Wonder Wheel in Coney Island is perfect to see when you understand the best time to visit NYC.

For warm weather and plenty of things to do outdoors, August is a good month to visit.

However, many would argue that it’s the worst time to visit NYC! And that’s because June through August is peak season, which means prices are higher and crowds are at their most intense.

Plus, with temperatures hitting 84°F and higher, it’s also the hottest time to visit. Add in an insane amount of ambient humidity and you have a challenging time to visit NYC.

November – The holiday season in NYC begins to kick off with the Radio City Christmas Spectacular and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

December – Christmas in NYC is in full swing with Christmas markets and holiday lights. Quite possibly the biggest event in the city is the notorious New Year’s Eve at Times Square! Along with a host of performances and fireworks comes the famous ball drop at midnight.

Is NYC Expensive to Visit?

View of the Manhattan Bridge in between two buildings in DMUBO.

Yes. There’s no denying that NYC is an expensive place to visit.

With hotels in Manhattan ranging from $200 and up to $1,500 per night it can be overwhelming. However, the average cost for a one-week New York City vacation is roughly $1600 per person.

One thing to remember is that the cost of a NYC trip can be as little or as high as you want! If you want to stay at luxury hotels, dine at top restaurants, and see all the sights, it will be expensive.

Yet, for those looking for a cheaper vacation, there are plenty of ways to shave off spending. You can visit during the low season when prices are more affordable. Consider dining at budget-friendly restaurants where you’ll find meals for under $15. Plus, there’s a long list of free things to do in NYC!

When Is The Rainy Season In NYC?

NYC has a 5 month long wet season which could be called its rainy season. Usually this starts off around the end of March and winds up somewhere mid August. The wettest time of the year however is bang in the middle of June, so if you are visiting during this time of the year make sure that you come equipped with rainwear.

It is also interesting to note that by default NYC is a wet city. That means that you can expect the heavens to open and drop a bucket of water on you at almost any time of the year.

January, February, September and October are generally exceptions to this rule. With global warming however things aren’t as predictable as they used to be. Despite this, if you are looking for the best time to visit NYC without rain, you are safer off visiting during these months.

Honestly, it is always best to use water resistant items when traveling the city. That way neither you nor your belongings get wet during the event of a downpour. Don’t worry about it too much though. If you have reached NYC without rain gear, you’ll find that there are numerous great cafes in the city that you can chill in while the storm clears.

What Are The Busiest Times Of The Year In NYC

The busiest time of the year in NYC is during summer. The warmer temperatures make it the perfect time to explore the city and that draws in people from across the country and even the world. I mean at the end of the day, NYC is a pretty epic city. If you are going to visit it, you may as well head to it at the best time to visit NYC.

The downside to the great weather is that the queues for all the attractions are insanely long. The usually crowded city is bursting at the seams and the cost of accommodation skyrockets!

Winter is also another busy time in NYC. This is because November and December draw in crowds for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Yes! We can’t forget about the New Year’s countdown at Times Square too! That is another event that everyone wants to experience firsthand.

Best Times to Go to NYC Explained

cheapest time to visit new york

If you are planning to visit New York City, deciding when to go can be a challenge.

Like anything, what works best for you is largely up to you. When is the weather the best? When are hotels the cheapest?

I am a local tour guide and I've written this post with years of experience listening to tour guests about their experiences.

Here are some quick answers.

The best time to go to NYC depends on what "best" means to you.

If by best you mean the cheapest times to visit, then that's simple to answer. Come just about any time between January and February .

However, there are also relatively cheap times to visit during periods of the high season. Read our section below explaining when is the cheapest time .

If your definition of "best" mostly concerns the weather, then that's also an easy answer.

You should visit between May and June or between September and November.

This is when it is the warmest with the least amount of rain. Learn more about why .

Each month can be the best for certain individuals. Therefore, I also created a section in this post summarizing what each month has to offer .

Because there's no point visiting in October if your dream is to ice skate on the Rockefeller Center ice rink.

This post is a guide to choosing the best time to go to NYC on a visit, and by extension, the worst time to visit.

I include when it's the cheapest and when to expect the best weather and a month-by-month comparison.

As a walking tour company offering tours every day of the year, I have a lot of experience with visitors to NYC.

And every day, I hear what our guests have to say about visiting at that time of the year, the good the bad, and the indifferent.

I've led thousands of guests through the streets of NYC in all types of weather, during peak tourism seasons, as well as the slow season.

We also run the popular NYC Travel Tips Facebook group, where one of the most frequently asked questions we get has to do with when to visit NYC.

Best Times to Visit NYC

As you can see, many of the 225k members love to provide their opinions on the pros and cons of visiting NYC at different times of the year.

Our group is comprised of locals (like our tour guides), expats, veteran visitors to the Big Apple, as well as newbies.

Consider checking the group out when you finish reading this post.

You don't need to be a member to read the posts, comments, and recommendations.

CHEAPEST TIME TO GO TO NYC

The following is a summary of a more in-depth post on visiting NYC during the  least expensive periods of the year, where I also cover the cheapest times in the high season.

The short answer though is that early January until early March is clearly the cheapest time to visit NYC.

This period contains the best combination of low prices and offers on flights, hotels, and Broadway-types shows and musicals.

The second cheapest period is from early November until about the first week of December.

In addition to the information below, you may want to read our post, How Much Does It Cost To Visit New York City?

Cheapest Hotel Prices

Average hotel prices, which approach $300/night for the year, drop to around $190/night city-wide during this low tourism period.

Our post on where to stay in NYC gives affordable options throughout NYC based on feedback from our Facebook group members.

And although the graph doesn't show it, there is a period between November 1st and early December that is also relatively inexpensive to visit NYC.

According to Google Flights, the average 5-day round-trip, non-stop flight from London to NYC can reach £1200 during the peak Christmas rush.

The Types of Travelers Who Should Benefit

Museum Lovers

It's cold outside, but who cares?

During the slow seasons, museums and other indoor attractions are operating as usual and they are much less crowded.

NYC Museums in Winter

Not to mention, many museums and attractions are either free (or pay-what-you-wish) every day of the week or on select days and times or included for free with a tourist attraction cocnession pass.

broadway week

Theater Lovers

Fewer tourists mean getting tickets to shows in NYC are easier to come by, especially on websites such as StubHub and TodayTix.

Late January is also Broadway Week, which is actually 2 weeks long when you can get 2 for 1 tickets to many popular Broadway shows.

I also have some general tips on how to get your hands on cheaper theater tickets .

Jan until early March is also a great time for dining out. As for Broadway shows, dinner reservations are much easier to come by.

There is Restaurant Week , which like Broadway Week lasts for 2 weeks in the 2nd half of January and offers deep price cuts.

BEST TIME TO VISIT NYC WEATHERWISE

Much like in the previous section, the answer to the question of when is the weather best is subjective.

But the short answer is that for most people, the best times to visit NYC weatherwise are the roughly 2-month periods of May and June as well as September and October.

Best Months for Weather in NYC

It's during these 2 periods that the weather (both day and night) is stable and warm, without the humidity of the dead of summer as well as very little rain.

Late April and early July, as well as late August and early November, could also apply here.

NYC Climate and Temperature Table

Which Month is the Hottest in NYC?

The hottest month in NYC is July, but really it's the second half of July and the first half of August.

And while these months can be downright hot and humid in NYC, this isn't always the case.

And if you come from a hot and humid climate, such as Florida or Queensland, then you should easily acclimate yourself to NYC's summer climate.

And, as I alluded to in the previous section, if you are a museum lover, then when you come to NYC isn't very weather-dependent.

After you read this section, check out our section on things to do by month .

Which Month Gets the Most Rain in NYC?

April gets the most rain on average, but as you can see in the chart below, several other months come close.

Average Monthly Rainfall NYC

April through July could be considered the rainy season in NYC, but this could be a bit deceiving.

There aren't so many rainy days. When it rains in NYC during this period, it's often a lot of rain at once, which means there are plenty of good days.

Which Month Gets the Most Snow in New York City?

The month with the most snow is February, but January can get as much or more snow. It depends on the near.

When does it snow in NYC

Although NYC isn't a particularly snowy city, you should be prepared to deal with snowy conditions.

Read our post on planning for snow in NYC for more information.

Weather Overview by Seasons

Winter (Dec-Feb)

This is the coldest time of year. Early December is relatively mild but can be quite cold as well.

Daily afternoon high temperatures in January and February will be mostly in the upper 30’s F to near 40 F (3-5 C), with evening and morning low temperatures around the mid to upper 20s F (-2 to -3 C).

As I mentioned above, snow is most likely in January and February but it can certainly snow in December and March.

As I also alluded to earlier, this is also the cheapest time to visit NYC  (with the exception of Christmas and New Year's) and is great for those who love museums, indoor attractions, Broadway shows, and fancy dinners.

But it's also a great time for people who like to go ice skating or just don't mind the cold (Canadians?).

Spring (March-May)

At the start of March, average high temperatures will reach into the mid-40s F (6-7 C).

By the end of May, average daily high temperatures will reach the mid-70s F (22-24 C) by the end of the month.

The photo was taken on May 23, 2019, on the Brooklyn Heights Promenade

May is a Great Time to Visit NYC

You should expect some snow at the start of March, but significant snowfall after this time occurs seldom in NYC.

And if NYC has a rainy season, then it's this 3-month period. However, no month in NYC sees more than 4 in. (10 cm) of rain a month on average.

Average Monthly Rainfall NYC

The weather isn't very stable, particularly in March and the 1st half of April with frequent temperature and precipitation changes, though May is more pleasant.

More outdoor activities are taking place, especially starting in April. Professional baseball, basketball, and hockey are all happening now.

Summer (June - August)

June is still a great time weather-wise, with average high temperatures around the mid-70s F (22 -24 C) at the start of the month and ending the month just a tad warmer.

Average Monthly Temperatures NYC

July is when things start to warm up, with average high temperatures in the mid-80s F (26-29 C).

About 1/4 of the days will exceed 90 F (32 C) along with high humidity.

In the past, July has seen temperatures rise to as high as 106 F (41 C).

The good news is that evening and morning lows average around the mid to upper-60s F (17-21 C), which means taking advantage of things to do outside at night.

July Night Tour NYC

The summer is a great time for a night tour.

August is similar to July with the end of the month seeing partially cooler temperatures than the first half of the month, particularly at night.

All 3 months bring lots of sunshine, and while there aren't many rainy days, when it does rain, it's often significant (if short-lived).

Expect thundershowers any day of the week.

Autumn (Sept-Nov)

If you can come during this time period, I recommend this as the best time.

As I mentioned earlier, September and October are two months when the weather (both day and night) is stable and warm, without the humidity of the dead of summer as well as very little rain.

Daily high temperatures in September average between 70 – 8o F (21 – 26 C) with October seeing average high temperatures between 60 - 70 F (16 - 21 C).

Things will start to cool off in November when light jackets are required, but the weather is still pleasant.

Daily average high temperatures range between 50-60 F (9 - 16 C).

BEST MONTHS TO VISIT NYC

January is a great month for bargain hunters. Post-holiday shopping means big markdowns. And hotels and flights will generally cost less.

Until mid-month, some holiday lights are still up and you can enjoy them without the crowds. You can also enjoy winter sports like  ice skating .

Two annual January events can save you some serious money.

One of these is Broadway Week, where you can get two tickets to Broadway Shows for the price of one!

The other money-saving event is Restaurant Week (actually two weeks long) you can dine at over 300 of NYC’s best restaurants with more than an affordable prix-fixe set menu.

This event occurs again in late July.

January is also a great month for fans of professional ice hockey and basketball as both sports are active.

And NYC's Chinatowns are buzzing with Lunar New Year celebrations.

Similar to January, you can get good deals on hotels and flights. You can see ice hockey and basketball games.

Best of all, you can visit NYC attractions without the crowds.

Both Broadway Week and Restaurant Week are still going on in early February.

Mid-February offers Off-Broadway Week with two-for-one tickets for high-quality shows at smaller theaters.

Chinatown is filled with celebratory spirit as Chinese New Year takes place with parades and festivals.

You can also see dogs and supermodels on the catwalk as both the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and New York Fashion Week takes place.

Early March is still off-peak season and flights and hotels may cost less.

Towards the end of the month, NYC sees signs of springtime with the Orchid Show and the Macy’s Flower Show.

You can celebrate St. Patrick's Day when much of New York seems to turn green for the day, including green bagels!

Basketball fans will love March Madness and can see the Big East Tournament.

March is really when temperatures start to get warm in NYC .

Another month filled with flowers, April brings the Easter Parade, the Cherry Blossom Festival, and flower bulbs in Central Park.

April is also a great time to visit the New York Botanical Garden and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden.

You can see the best new movie makers at the Tribeca Film Festival.

In addition to basketball and ice hockey, soccer, and baseball startup, so you have a choice of four professional sports to go see.

In May, baseball is in full swing. The High Line and Central Park are blooming.

This is a great month to spend outdoors and also at indoor attractions and museums before the summer crowds arrive.

Some special events are Fleet Week at the Intrepid Museum and the Annual 9th Avenue Food Festival.

Memorial Day is the start of beach season in NYC , and believe it or not, we have some pretty nice beaches!

Summer is here, and though it does bring more tourists (June and July are the busiest months to visit), there are also more fantastic annual events!

Two major free performance series start in June: Shakespeare in the Park and Summerstage .

You can purchase affordable art at the NYC perennial favorite, the Washington Square Outdoor Art Show.

There is a lot of dancing in the streets since June brings the Dance Parade, the Gay Pride Parade , the Puerto Rican Day Parade, and the one-of-a-kind  Mermaid Parade at Coney Island .

The free fun continues with loads of free concerts and outdoor movie series , and both Shakespeare in the Park and Summerstage  are still running.

Restaurant Week returns for two weeks at the end of the month with amazing price cuts at over 300 restaurants.

Independence Day brings Macy’s unbelievable Fireworks show and French Independence Day (Bastille Day) brings great food and music festivals.

August does heat up a bit, but this is a bonus for visitors as many New Yorkers flee the city meaning an easier time to visit museums and enjoy otherwise packed restaurants.

At the end of the month, the world’s top tennis players arrive for the US Open Tennis Championship.

You can also see professional baseball games and soccer matches.

In the evenings you have almost too many choices of free entertainment from outdoor movies and plays to concerts and festivals.

August is also Harlem Week - which lasts the whole month!

September is great for those who like warm days and cool nights.

The city is yours to explore without the summer crowds as school and summer vacations are over.

School kids are back in the classroom so lines at family-friendly attractions are shorter.

Broadway Week returns with two-for-one deals on theater tickets. Baseball’s still happening and football season begins.

The month is filled with festivals and parades with the highlights being the Feast of San Gennaro in Little Italy, the Caribbean Day Parade, and the Atlantic Antic.

You can pretty much count on the tourist crowds being gone giving you more time and space to visit the city’s top attractions.

Central Park’s trees' leaves change colors and it's a great place for a fall foliage tour.

Lots of fun ‘spooky’ events are put on, including Ghost Tours !

There are lots of family-friendly festivals celebrating the harvest season.

The culmination of the month is the Annual Village Halloween Parade, a one-of-a-kind experience.

Early in the month can see top comedians at the New York Comedy Festival and all month long you can see a basketball, football, or ice hockey game.

The city will be full of runners as the New York City Marathon takes place in early November 2024.

Later in November, you can see the giant floats at the incredible Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade .

Towards the end of the month, the holiday spirit starts up, holiday lights and markets appear and you can even ice skate!

Best Time to Visit for Christmas

The Christmas holiday season brings tourists back for the festive environment and plenty of lights and decorations.

The holiday lights , special Christmas markets , and the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree are highlights.

You have many holiday shows to choose from including the Radio City Christmas Spectacular and the Nutcracker ballet, and you can spend New Year's Eve watching the ball drop in Times Square .

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on the last Thursday of November is the unofficial start to NYC's Christmas season and many decorations are already up by then.

However, the best time to visit NYC for Christmas would be the 2nd and 3rd weeks of December, when all decorations are up and the city is full of Christmas spirit.

Hotel and flights are reasonably priced, at least compared to Christmas week to New Year's Eve.

When is the best time to visit New York?

cheapest time to visit new york

New York does everything well. It even seems to have perfected its seasons. The city starts to stir in the spring, whilst the summer’s heat is nearly perfect until it gets quite hot (but who cares, as there’s a lot you can do indoors). Fal l then arrives in a blaze of hues. Even winter is great; who doesn’t like a snowstorm?

This begs the question: what’s really the best time to visit New York? The answer of course is any time is a good time to visit New York; each season has something for everyone. Here are some of the things that each season has to offer, to help you decide on the best time to go for you.

Is spring the best time to visit New York for you?

cheapest time to visit new york

New York in the spring is absolutely beautiful. As the city stirs to life, there is a spring to everyone’s step in anticipation of warmer weather and things to come. The city is adorned in shoots and blossoms, and even the birds seem to get in on the act. This is the perfect time for sightseeing when the weather is pleasant and the city is still quiet.

During the warmer months, things begin to pick up, both in terms of visitors and weather. There are also lots of street parades and festivities, such as the St Patrick’s Day Parade, Harlem Cultural Festival, and the Brooklyn Folk Festival.

Sakura Matsuri Blossom Festival

cheapest time to visit new york

As spring settles in, the cherry trees start to blossom. They’re in full season towards the end of March and beginning of April, so head to the Botanical Gardens for the Sakura Matsuri Blossom Festival. For a small fee and with canopies and carpets of pink petals, you’ll see performances from J-rock bands,

Taiko drummers, and samurai sword masters, as well as a mini flea market and a Japanese tearoom. Other great places to witness this spectacle of pink clouds are Central Park, The High Line, and Bryant Park.

New York in summer

cheapest time to visit new york

The summer months in New York see the pulse pick up a beat, and the heat follows suit, with longer days of up to 11 hours. If you are a fan of music, this is the best time to visit New York because the whole city is bathed in festivals and concerts. Many of these are free yet feature incredible artists and bands.

August is the best time to head indoors to some of the city’s museums or head to one of the nearby beaches; yes, you heard that right.

Rockaway Beach

cheapest time to visit new york

One of New York’s fun beaches, Rockaway Beach, is only about 45 minutes from the hustle and bustle of the city. Hop on the OvR Rockaway Beach Bus, which runs every weekend to one of the most laid-back and friendly beaches around. Entrance to the beach is free, where you will find some of the best tacos and lots of cool outdoor bars and vintage shops.

Governors Island

cheapest time to visit new york

One of the coolest and most luxurious spas in NYC has opened its doors on Governors Island and is the place to head for a relaxing and rejuvenating time from the heat. The spa is open from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm Sunday to Thursday and 10:00 am to 11:00 pm Friday to Saturday. You pay a one-off fee that gives you access to all the facilities (but treatments cost extra); included is your round-trip ferry ticket – what’s not to like?

SummerStage

cheapest time to visit new york

As the heat of the summer cranks up, so does the anticipation of one of the biggest New York summer events: SummerStage. This free festival is hosted in Central Park and amongst other parks across the city, with a big-name lineup of hip-hop artists, indie-rock bands, dance performers and even screen films. The festival usually runs from June through to October.

Central Park

cheapest time to visit new york

Right in the middle of Manhattan is Central Park, a whole 843 acres of it. You could spend days here and still not exhaust everything. The key to exploring this historic landmark is using the right entrance, so you are not exhausted before you see anything of importance; head to the entrance at 72nd Street and Central Park West. T

he park has everything from an ice-skating rink to a swimming pool and hosts various events throughout the year, so it’s a perfect place to visit any time you are in New York – don’t miss out on the iconic Bethesda Fountain.

New York in the fall

cheapest time to visit new york

It could easily be said that fall is the best time to visit New York. The weather is as pleasant as it is in the spring but without the rain. Head to Central Park, Prospect Park, or Fort Tryon Park to witness the most beautiful natural canvas of gold, yellow and brown shades you’ll see.

October is also one of the best times to beat the queues at New York’s city attractions, with fewer crowds. Get the New York Explorer Pass, which will give you entrance to most of them at a fraction of the cost.

New York in winter

cheapest time to visit new york

Winter in New York starts off gently, and as seen in recent years, heads into proper snowstorms. But if you bundle up and expect traffic delays, you are in for a fabulous time. Most of the tourist attractions empty out as visitors head home, whilst the city becomes a gigantic snowball, complete with twinkling lights. This makes winter one of the best times to visit New York for a romantic break.

Winter skating

cheapest time to visit new york

Nothing beats New York in winter with a mug of hot chocolate. The Rink at Rockefeller Center is a classic ice-skating experience, along with the famous Prometheus statue and Christmas tree. Others worth noting are LeFrak at the picturesque Prospect Park, which has both indoor and outdoor skating and other winter sports, and of course the Wollman Rink in Central Park.

cheapest time to visit new york

The city that never sleeps knows how to put on a show, and where better than Broadway. Whilst you can get a ticket any time of the year, some of the most discounted tickets are during Broadway Week, in January, when you can get 2-for-1 tickets.

cheapest time to visit new york

January, February and October are the best times to visit museums in New York because you can find reasonably priced tickets. There are also fewer visitors around. It’s a good time to head indoors to avoid the cold outside.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

cheapest time to visit new york

Fifth Avenue is home to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the largest art museum in the Western Hemisphere, with a collection of over two million works. It’s open every day except Wednesdays from 10:00 am to 5:00pm and closes at 9:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Otherwise, take advantage of the LES Gallery Nights, which offers free self-guided tours of some of the coolest galleries on the Lower East Side. Check the website for current scheduling.

cheapest time to visit new york

Of course, it makes sense to combine your holiday with a shopping spree. Most high-end boutiques in New York have sales twice a year, in November and December or April and May. You can also get discounted summer clothes in July.

Bagels at Russ & Daughters

cheapest time to visit new york

And now for the quintessential NYC experience that you can partake in any time you are in New York: the New York bagel. Where better to have yours than at Russ & Daughters? Opened in 1914, this bakery on the Lower East Side, with a newly opened branch in Brooklyn, knows how to do their bagels. They offer classics from bagel and lox to a caviar cream-cheese bagel – doesn’t that sound good with some smoked salmon?

What to pack?

cheapest time to visit new york

New York experiences the extremes of all seasons, so be savvy with your packing.

Spring in NY

Take a jumper and pack an umbrella for the spring. It’s bound to rain sometime, and the weather fluctuates from cold to warm.

Summer in New York

The summer calls for very light clothes, as it does get sweltering. Don’t forget your walking shoes, as this is the season you are likely to put in a lot of sightseeing.

What to pack: Fall

Fall is beautifully pleasant, but again you may require a light jacket for when the temperature dips.

New York: Winter

Because the winters get extremely cold, make sure to take a warm coat and some thermals.

The Best Time to Visit New York City

cheapest time to visit new york

TripSavvy / Brakethrough Media

The best time to visit New York City is in December when the city is lit up with holiday lights and decorations. You'll find elaborate light displays wherever you look, festive food and drink menus at restaurants, and themed activities every day of the week. While it's more crowded, it's also fun to be part of the holiday cheer. Everyone is in a good mood and ready to make the most of the city. The weather is cold but not as freezing as January and February.

If good weather is your priority, then fall is the best time to visit New York City. The weather is mild, and the leaves are changing. Walking down a street turns into a nature walk. July and August bring sweltering heat even though the city is less crowded. In the summer, there are free outdoor activities like movie screenings and kayaking.

Use this guide to determine what New York City offers every month of the year. You'll never run out of things to do regardless of when you are visiting.

Popular Events and Festivals

New York City has a constant flow of special events and festivals. There is something for everybody: design, food, music, theater, etc. The city is so big you can find diverse events happening on the same day in different neighborhoods. For example, in September there is Labor Day weekend , fashion week on the west side of Manhattan and downtown and the United Nations General Assembly in Midtown East. If you want to avoid the crowds you can simply head in the opposite direction. For a complete list of what's happening check out New York City's official guide .

Three-day weekends and other public holidays are a good time to visit New York City as the locals leave, and the city has more room for visitors. It's often easier to find a reservation at a popular restaurant, and the subways are emptier.

The Weather in New York City

New York City summers are hot and humid with temperatures reaching as high as 90 degrees F. Most of the city is covered in pavement, which absorbs the heat making it feel even muggier. There are public pools and boating options, both great ways to cool off.

Many locals believe fall is the prettiest time to visit New York City. The leaves change color and fall to the street, making the city feel more naturally beautiful. Central Park is a great place to head during the fall; you'll see plants of every color.

The winter can be very cold in New York City with average temperatures ranging from the 40s degrees F as a high and 20 degrees F as a low. When it snows the streets get covered in piles of slush making it harder to walk around. Waterproof boots this time of year are essential. The flip side is New York City bars and restaurants really know how to get cozy; you'll find fireplaces burning at many spots.

In the spring, the city comes alive. Flowers bloom on every street and the city has many festivals including the Cherry Blossom Festival in Brooklyn, which is officially called Sakura Matsuri. Temperatures hover in the 50s and 60s making it pleasant to walk around and see the sights.

January is the coldest month in New York City but also the cheapest. While the holiday lights are still up, there are bargains inside most stores after the holiday season has passed. Hotels are also cheaper, which means you'll have a great place to stay while you explore these events:

  • Winter Jazzfest : The world's best musicians come to New York City and play over 100 sets at diverse venues including speakeasy bars, churches, and iconic concert halls.
  • NYC Must-See Week : To entice New Yorkers outdoors every January the city's best attractions, museums, tours, and theaters offer two-for-one admission for one week only.
  • NYC Broadway Week : This week lets you purchase two-for-one tickets to some of New York City's best productions. It's a great chance to see hits from "The Lion King" to "Kinky Boots" without breaking the bank.
  • NYC Restaurant Week : Twice a year New York City's finest restaurants make their menus more affordable with three-course prix-fixe lunches and dinners. There are over 400 restaurants participating so come hungry.

February continues to be cold, but special events warm the hearts of both locals and tourists, especially those who like fashion and Broadway shows:

  • Lunar New Year Parade & Festival : Across New York City Chinese communities celebrate their New Year with dancing dragons, martial artists, and colorful parades. The best places to head are Chinatown, Flushing, Queens, and Sunset Park. However, it's important to note that the Lunar New Year sometimes falls in January.
  • New York Fashion Week (Fall/Winter) : If you've always wanted to watch models in elaborate designs walking the catwalk here is your chance. In addition to the main event, there are smaller pop-up parties and runways taking place all over the city.
  • NYC Off-Broadway Week : This month is a chance for off-Broadway stars to shine. For one week each year, productions offer two-for-one tickets to their jaw-dropping spectacles.

March tends to warm up, making the city alive with activity. It just might be rainy, though, so pack your sturdiest umbrella to fight off the wind and rain while you enjoy these events:

  • St. Patrick’s Day Parade : This parade that marches down Fifth Avenue was first held in 1762. Organized by the archbishop of New York, it's still going strong. Dress in green and get ready for Irish music, dancing, and other Celtic traditions.
  • Macy’s Flower Show : What a better way to celebrate the coming of spring than heading to the Macy's Annual Flower Show. All over the department store you'll see impressive displays made entirely of exotic and colorful flowers.
  • Big East Tournament : Ten schools head to Madison Square Garden to compete for the Big East Men's Basketball Championship. It's truly March Madness at this annual sporting event.

April is the month when spring finally hits New York City. Everyone is outside enjoying the sunshine and the blooming flowers, but be sure to pack a jacket as it can still be a little chilly. Events you should check out this month include the following:

  • Mets  and  Yankees  Season Openers: Calling all baseball fans! April is when the Mets and Yankees open their seasons at their iconic stadiums. New York City makes it easy to reach both of them by public transportation so leave the car at home.
  • Cherry Blossom Festival : Walking amongst the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's cherry trees can feel like a dream with pink, fluffy flowers everywhere. The entire family will love concerts, dance performances, and other cultural celebrations.

Many New Yorkers say May is perfect for enjoying all the city has to offer. The sunshine is out, the weather is warm, and it's before summer, so the crowds haven't descended upon the city yet. This means you'll have plenty of room to enjoy these great events:

  • TD Five Boro Bike Tour : For one day New York City shuts down its main streets so 32,000 cyclists from around the world can ride to all five boroughs, taking in the city's best views. Sign up early to participate or simply head to the side of the route to cheer on the riders.
  • Frieze New York : For this art festival, Randall Island gets transformed into an artist heaven. An outdoor sculpture park is created, and a tent full of masterpieces is set up on the green space.
  • May is the start of many programs that last throughout the summer. Highlights include SummerStage , a free performance series in Central Park, and Summer on the Hudson  , a festival that brings wellness activities, movies, kids' shows, kite-flying, concerts, and other fun events to Riverside Park.

In June, summer has officially arrived in the city, but it's not too hot yet. Many festivals bring people outdoors into the sunshine, as do special events that take place all across the city:

  • Tribeca Film Festival : Robert De Niro's film festival is one of the best in the world. Actors from all over the globe head to this beautiful neighborhood to debut their latest work. Be prepared for lots of celebrity sightings.
  • Museum Mile Festival : For a few days the country's best museums located in the Upper East Side (including the Metropolitan Museum of Art) open their doors to the public for free. On the street is a full-blown block party with food, music, and lots of activities for kids.
  • Big Apple Barbecue Block Party : The country's top barbecue chefs take over New York City's Madison Square Park and cook their specialities on the street. Live music and lots of beer are also available.
  • Pride Week : Every year the city celebrates its gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities with a festival just for them. It culminates with a parade at the site of the Stonewall Riots of 1969.
  • NY Philharmonic Concerts in the Parks : Pack a picnic, grab a blanket, and enjoy some of the city's greatest music under the stars. The New York Philharmonic does a free concert in all five boroughs including Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx and the Great Lawn in Central Park.

July is going to be hot, but you can get your mind off the heat with fun activities and programs. From celebrations of the birth of the United States to Broadway shows in public parks, there are plenty of great events worth discovering in July:

  • Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks : There is no better place to be for the Fourth of July than New York City. The best firework show in town is the Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks. You can even see them surround the Statue of Liberty.
  • Broadway in Bryant Park : Why see Broadway shows in an indoor theater in the summer when you can head to the park? Set up a picnic at lunchtime in Bryant Park and watch the stars entertain you for an hour.
  • Summer at Lincoln Center : New York CIty's legendary music establishment invites its greatest performers to entertain you under the stars. One night there is a swing dance party. The next, a family show or a Mozart concert.

While most locals head to the closest beach in August, you'll have the city all to yourself most of the month. However, while it will be oppressively hot in the concrete jungle, sticking around might just be worth it for these events:

  • Summer Streets : On three Saturdays in August, sections of Park Avenue are closed to traffic so walkers and bikers can have all the lanes to themselves. It's an amazing feat to be able to journey down one of the city's biggest streets without any cars getting in your way.
  • US Open Tennis  (through September): In tennis there are four grand slams every year, and the final one is at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens. Tickets to early matches in August let you walk around the stadium viewing smaller matches on side courts. You might discover the next great star.

In September , everyone in New York City is back at work and school, but the city is still buzzing with activity. The weather is also cooling off, making it enjoyable once again to be outdoors for these great events:

  • New York Fashion Week (Spring/Summer) : New York Fashion Week returns with designers showing off their spring and summer collections. Celebrities from other industries including film and sports also make an appearance at these shows. Fashion parties last all night long.
  • Commemorating 9/11 : Every September 11th the city remembers the victims of the World Trade Center attacks. It's a solemn day, but an important one. Religious groups hold events to pray for peace, and the Freedom Tower beams lights around the city.

October is the heart of fall, and New Yorkers relish the changing colors of the leaves in parks across the city. From the New Yorker Festival to Oktoberfest and Halloween celebrations, there are also many fun events and festivals for locals and visitors to enjoy this month:

  • Open House New York : This design festival allows you to go behind the scenes of the city's greatest buildings that are normally closed for the public. You can tour private brownstones in Brooklyn and see the mechanics of vast skyscrapers. Sign up early to get a spot.
  • New Yorker Festival : This is a three-day festival all about enriching the mind. Leaders in politics, journalism, arts, media, and more hold panels and lectures to teach you something you didn't know.
  • Rangers  and  Islanders  Openers: New York City loves its two hockey teams, and October is the start of the season. Get a ticket to an early game where the athletes are fresh and ready to rumble.
  • Village Halloween Parade : One of the greatest parades in New York City, this event brings thousands of people to Greenwich Village. The streets are swarmed with elaborate costumes, huge puppets, bands, and party-goers. It's crowded, but that's part of the fun.
  • Oktoberfest : New Yorkers love an excuse to party, and they go all out for this German celebration. At venues across the city, you'll find huge pretzels, lederhosen, and pints of beer.

During the month of November, the days get shorter and colder, but New Yorkers concentrate on preparing for Thanksgiving and appreciating all they have to be thankful for. You'll also find a number of great events like marathons and parades in the city this month.

  • TCS New York City Marathon : Hailed as one of the greatest days of the year, everyone in New York City rallies around the marathon. You'll find spectators cheering on strangers at every mile. At some viewing spots loud speakers blast loud music and vendors serve treats.
  • New York Comedy Festival : Comedians from all over the world journey to New York City for this festival. It's where they try out their latest material and crack up audiences with improv nights. There are both small, intimate shows at bars and large-scale events in arenas.
  • Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade : Thanksgiving wouldn't be the same without the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Thousands of spectators wake up early to see their favorite balloons and floats journey down the streets of New York City. Don't miss seeing the balloons being blown up the night before.

December is all about the winter holidays in New York City . Every street is lit up with creative light displays, and stores go all out to welcome busy shoppers. It can be cold, but the air is crisp and full of the promise of snow. Check out these great activities to get you in the holiday spirit:

  • Holiday Shopping: At four iconic spots in New York City (Union Square, Grand Central Terminal, Bryant Park, and Columbus Circle) local artists and merchants congregate to sell gifts for the holidays. Buy a hot apple cider and walk around to see the treats on display. Also head to Fifth Avenue to see the famous department store windows at Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman.
  • Times Square New Year’s Eve : Millions of people from all over the world tune into Times Square to watch the famous crystal ball drop at midnight. While seeing it on television is special, viewing it in person is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Join people from all over the world to bring in the new year. Just don't forget to kiss at midnight!
  • New York Road Runners Midnight Run : If crowds and parties aren't your things, head to Central Park to race through Central Park at midnight. Runners wear costumes and carry festive accessories like horns and confetti.

New York City sees a fairly constant level of precipitation throughout the year, including at least a couple of snowstorms in the winter months. However, summer storms are common and July or August is usually the rainiest month in the city.

Things to do in New York New York Travel Guide Best Time To Visit New York

New York City or The Big Apple, truly experiences the full swing of all four seasons, each one offering its own unique charm and array of cultural events. After speaking to a few local friends, I can vouch for the incredible diversity that characterizes the city—not just in the people, but also in the activities, the arts scene, and let's not forget, the epic food scene in NYC . The city can be quite overstimulating for newcomers, with its plethora of attractions that cater to every taste and interest. So, let's dive into the ins and outs of the city's weather patterns to figure out the best time for you to plan your visit.

Best time to visit New York: Know before you plan your trip

Fall in New York is absolutely magical and by far the best season to visit if you're looking for that quintessential NYC experience. The temperatures are comfortable, neither too hot nor too cold, making it perfect for long strolls through Central Park to watch the leaves change color. May and late October are particularly delightful months to be in the city. In May, the weather is pleasant, and you can catch the fascinating Manhattanhenge, where the sunset aligns perfectly with the east-west streets. Come late October, the fall foliage is in full swing, creating a colorful backdrop for Halloween festivities, and the air is brisk but not yet the biting cold that winter brings.

Best time to visit New York City for backpackers

February to March is a great time if you want to avoid crowds and travel on a budget. The winter would be retreating and you'll find great deals on hotels and shopping.

Best time to visit New York City for families

If you're considering a trip with the family, summer months like June through August are ideal. The city buzzes with energy and outdoor activities, from free concerts in the park to exciting baseball games.

Best time to visit New York City for art enthusiasts

For those with a love for the arts, fall or spring are the best seasons to immerse yourself in New York's vibrant art scene. In fall, the New York Film Festival takes the spotlight, while spring brings the buzz of the Tribeca Film Festival and a flourish of gallery openings.

Best time to visit New York City for culture vultures

If you thrive on the cultural pulse of the city, then there's no better time to visit than during September and November. This is when the city's cultural calendar is jam-packed with events, from the illustrious Fashion Week to the enchanting holiday markets.

When to avoid New York City?

January and February are often considered the least favorable months to visit New York City. You'll encounter some of the coldest temperatures of the year, which can dip below freezing point. The winds are extreme and can chill you to the bone. You can barely visit any attractions. Additionally, these months follow the holiday season, so the city is in a sort of hibernation with fewer events.

New York City through the year

Over 8.5 million people call New York their home and while that’s a mind boggling number, imagine over 62 million visitors throng the city each year! Many of these tourists arrive in high season and here is what you can expect.

  • High Season in New York extends over two periods, in summer from June to August and in winter from November to December. Summer attracts a lot of international tourists and you will experience great crowds and queues at all attractions in the city. Thanksgiving and Christmas period also witnesses a lot of domestic tourists who are there for the festivities. Airfares skyrocket and accommodation runs out soon, so it’s best to book in advance.
  • Shoulder Season in New York is the spring and autumn seasons, and while there is a drop in tourist numbers special events or festivals can witness a spike in crowds. April to May and September to October are shoulder tourist seasons where you can manage to get special discounts on events and even accommodation. The temperature is pleasant and a great time for walking tours and visiting attractions which witness shorter queues.
  • Low Season in New York is for a limited period from January to March when winter has a stronghold over the city. Due to climate change, the city is experiencing higher frequency of snow storms but the city never stops! It is a good time to get cheap bargains on airfares and accommodation, and for Broadway shows and the best perk of all are low tourist crowds at museums and attractions. Just make time for transport delays and dress up comfortably in layered jackets and good warm boots.

More of a mountain person than beach, more of a culture-trip person than just visits! Having travelled to most of North India when I was a kid to backpacking across South India in my adulthood, I learnt that you often find your 'self' in the most unpredicted of places. And that is my inspiration to travel. To connect with nature, people and cultures. Books are my companion and I find my soul in trees. Music, yoga and literature is my passion. I often dream of attending a Peruvian wedding or living in a quaint Hungarian town for a while. When I am not writing, I would love to go hiking or explore the hidden valleys of Himalayas. Until then, some running and some literature is enough for me to get by!

Want To Buy a New Home and Keep Your Current Low Interest Rate? Try ‘Porting’ Your Mortgage

High interest rates are one of the most significant hurdles buyers face when jumping into the housing market right now. As anyone who purchased a home in the last few years knows, interest rates have more than doubled since 2020. For a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage , you’re looking at an average interest rate somewhere between the mid-6% and +7%  as of late.

So if you need to move, you might feel financially overwhelmed by the prospect of giving up your low, locked-in interest rate for a new rate that could be twice as high.

Enter “mortgage porting,” the practice of transferring the terms of your existing mortgage over to a new property. But how exactly does it work, and what will you need to qualify? Here’s some expert advice on what you’ll want to know before you consider porting your mortgage.

What is porting a mortgage?

Porting a mortgage essentially means transferring your mortgage to a new house. This will include the current terms of your loan, such as the interest rate and payment schedule.

But you can’t simply take your loan and plop it onto your new home. Instead, porting a mortgage often involves reapplying for your current loan, even though you already qualified once.

The only catch? You have to find out whether you and your mortgage are eligible.

How to determine if your mortgage is eligible

The thought of saving tons of money over the life of a new loan is a game-changer if you’re currently shopping for a home and facing high interest rates. But make sure you can port your mortgage before diving too deeply into your new home search.

“Eligibility for porting a mortgage is varied—you never know what you’re gonna get,” says financial advisor James Allen , of Billpin . “Some lenders allow it, others don’t. And not all mortgages are portable.”

For example, most variable-rate mortgages (a type of loan where the rate is not fixed) can’t be ported at all.

Another thing that will affect your eligibility is the amount of your mortgage as it compares to the home you want to buy.

“You can’t port if you’re moving into a less expensive home and don’t require the entire existing mortgage,” says Dennis Shirshikov , of real estate investment company Awning.com .

However, you might be able to port your mortgage if you’re moving into a home with an asking price equal to or higher than your current home loan.

“If the mortgage you’ll need for the new property is larger, your lender may offer you a ‘blend and extend,’” says Allen. “It’s like mixing the old and new, where you end up with a rate that mixes your old and current rates.”

Are you eligible?

Another thing to consider is whether you, as a borrower, are eligible for porting.

“The standard requirement is an excellent repayment history and meeting your lender’s affordability criteria for the new property,” says Shirshikov.

Your lender will likely want you to complete an entirely new loan application, including  affordability checks and  a credit check for you and your co-applicant.

Some lenders may even impose additional conditions, such as asking you to top-up your mortgage (i.e., borrow against any equity you have in your home) if the new property is more expensive.

When porting is a good idea

Porting your mortgage makes sense if you secured more favorable loan terms in the past and won’t be able to replicate them without porting.

“Porting is most advantageous when your current mortgage rate is significantly lower than market rates,” says Shirshikov. “However, if the current market rates are lower or the same, it might be worth exploring a new mortgage instead.”

How to port your mortgage

The first step in porting your mortgage is talking to your existing mortgage team.

“Speak with your current lender to confirm portability and understand the process,” says Shirshikov. “Remember to consider all costs, including potential penalties or fees associated with porting, to make sure it makes sense financially.”

While lenders usually make eligibility decisions promptly, processing time can still take up to several weeks. So it’s a good idea to start the process early.

“The timeline depends on factors like the real estate market and your personal circumstances, but typically it aligns with the closing date of your new property,” says Shirshikov.

The final word

Before settling on porting your mortgage, be sure to shop around the market and confirm that your current interest rate is still the best one out there.

Depending on the kind of loan you need, the amount, and any other life circumstances that might have changed since you last took out a mortgage—there could be better rates on the market.

The bottom line? Porting a mortgage is about as much work as applying for a new one, so always make sure it’s a deal worth securing.

Tips for cheaper travel

If you’re looking to travel on a budget, it’s a good idea to shop around. Experts have previously told USA TODAY that the more flexible you can be with your travel dates, the easier it will be to find deals. Going places at off-peak times, especially when school is in session, can help make tickets and accommodations more affordable and are likely to attract fewer crowds, too.

With the dollar still strong, it’s also a good time for U.S. citizens to consider traveling abroad. Favorable exchange rates mean your budget could stretch even further overseas.
