How to Save the Most on an Amtrak Trip If You're 65+

Retirement is the perfect time to see the U.S. by train — here's every Amtrak discount seniors can take advantage of.

cheap rail travel for over 50s

Traveling by train around the United States is romantic, convenient, and comfortable — but it's not always cheap.

Booking a trip on Amtrak can be an expensive proposition, but it doesn’t always have to be if you take just a few minutes to dig around for discounts, sales, and other savings options. Deals abound for certain routes, groups of people, and even booking windows. But they are especially generous for one demographic, in particular, and that's the senior crowd.

From deals on routes along each U.S. coast to a widely applicable markdown just for older riders, these Amtrak travel discounts are just a few of the many perks that come along with age.

10 of the Best American Cities to Live Comfortably on $40,000 a Year

Amtrak's standard senior discount.

Amtrak always offers specific discounts to the senior set, including the regular 10% senior discount it offers on most rail fares and routes. The minimum age for this discount is 65 on domestic routes, but it applies to riders age 60 and older “on cross-border services operated jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada," the train company says. The discount can't be used for class upgrades or in conjunction with other discounts. Check the website for more restrictions and to see whether the route you're eyeing qualifies.

Amtrak Downeaster Line Discounts

Amtrak offers even bigger savings for seniors on specific routes, including a 50% discount on Downeaster line tickets .

The Downeaster line runs between Boston , Massachusetts, and Brunswick, Maine , calling at 10 New England destinations along the way. Passengers can head to Portland, Maine, to sightsee in Old Port, or they can disembark at Old Orchard Beach to take advantage of seven miles of coastline. A one-way journey takes about three and a half hours from start to finish, and Amtrak operates five round trips daily.

15% Off California Routes

Amtrak's three main California rail lines — Capitol Corridor, the Pacific Surfliner, and the San Joaquins — are arguably some of the most scenic in the country. The former two hug the coast, offering views of the sprawling Pacific, while the latter route is sandwiched between iconic California national parks ( Yosemite , Death Valley, Kings Canyon) to the east and the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains to the west. Passengers go for the picturesque scenery as much as they do for the convenience of car-free travel to busy areas like San Diego , Los Angeles , Fresno, Sacramento, and Santa Barbara. Those 62 and older get 15% off select California routes , including these lines.

Early Bird Discount on Acela Routes

Before settling for a smaller discount, check that you don't qualify for Amtrak's ongoing early bird deal. Travelers — regardless of age — who book a trip on Amtrak's high-speed Acela train at least 14 days in advance get up to 30% off. Acela travels along the East Coast from Boston to Washington, D.C. , stopping at Providence, Rhode Island ; New Haven, Connecticut; New York City ; Philadelphia ; and Baltimore, to name a few notable destinations. With the discount, a sample one-way fare from Boston to NYC is $58 and from NYC to Washington, D.C., $71. Beware of blackout dates around the holidays.

Can I Get a Senior Discount on Rail Passes?

cheap rail travel for over 50s

You probably remember those glorious college days, when summers were spent working just long enough to save up some money for a long backpacking trip around Europe. Whether the backpacking days are far behind you or you still bunk at youth hostels to save money, it's nice to know that rail passes are still around in Europe and can also be found in the U.S. and Canada. Best of all, some rail system operators offer senior discount on rail passes depending on where you go.

Senior Rail Pass Discounts in the U.S.

Although Amtrak offers 10 percent discounts for seniors aged 60 years of older on some fares, this does not include their selection of rail passes. Senior discounts are quite limited in the U.S. and are not applicable to discounted fares, first class tickets, or on high-speed Acela service. However, if you are traveling with a child under 12, it is possible to get a discount on their rail pass ticket and children under 2 years old can ride for free when accompanied by a fare-paying adult.

Senior Rail Pass Discounts in Canada

On VIA Rail , seniors over 60 years of age can receive 10 percent discounts throughout the year on Economy Plus, Sleeper, Sleeper Plus, and Touring Fares. However, the discount is not available if you're booking a seat in Prestige or Business Class. Every rail pass is different , so you'll want to be sure that the pass you purchase includes the area you wish to travel to:

  • Multi Pass: 10, 20 50, or 100 travel credits available to use in zones one through five.
  • Leisure Pass: Six travel credits available to use in zones one through five.
  • Canada Pass: Six, 12, or unlimited travel credits to use in Zone 6.
  • Commuter Pass: 20 travel credits available to use between only two cities within Zone 5.

Detailed information and maps of each zone is available on the VIA Rail website .

Senior Rail Pass Discounts in Europe

Senior discounts for travelers from North America age 60 and older are available on rail passes in the UK, Ireland, France, and Romania. You can save 10 percent on the price of your pass, but you'll need to purchase it before you leave home. You may want to book seat reservations once you arrive, particularly in high season; the pass alone does not guarantee you a seat and standing in a train corridor is not fun.

It's worth noting that the rules for obtaining a senior discount for the Eurail pass can be particular. For example, you must be at least 60 years or older on the first day of your trip. Even if you turn 60 in the middle of the week, you will have to buy an Adult pass without a discount. Generally, this is not a huge inconvenience, but anyone celebrating their 60th birthday with a train trip to Europe will want to keep this in mind when making arrangements.

The Global Pass will give you access to 33 different countries in Europe and you can book a first or second class pass that will last anywhere between 10 days to three months. The more expensive passes allow for unlimited travel, which is a great option if you want the freedom to make side trips and detours. The least expensive passes will limit you to predetermined number of travel days, but there is no limit to how many trains you can take on these days or when you can use them. If you purchase a global pass, you will be able to visit the United Kingdom via the Chunnel, the underground tunnel that connects the the British Isles to Continental Europe . You'll be able to take the Eurostar train, but your seat reservation must be made in advance through Eurail and they may charge you for a booking fee in addition to a reservation fee.

8 USA Train Trips for Solo Women Over 50

Do you like traveling by train? Do you enjoy multi-day train trips? I recently started obsessing about train trips and went into a rabbit hole of research, and I am now more excited than ever to plan my next train trip in the USA.

In this article you will learn about:

  • The California Zephyr – Cross the country on this multi-day trip from Chicago to Los Angeles.
  • The Coast Starlight – Ride on this scenic train trip that runs along the west coast from Seattle to Los Angeles.
  • The Rocky Mountaineer – This train route takes you on a stunning journey through the American Southwest
  • The Empire Builder – Another Amtrak train journey that takes you from Chicago to Seattle, passing through the stunning Glacier National Park and the Columbia River Gorge.

There’s just something about traveling by train. It evokes a time gone by when rail travel was luxurious, and the carriages were elegant and festive. There is part nostalgia and part slow living that I enjoy about train voyages.

Continue reading to discover more USA train trips.

How to Prepare for a Multi-Day Train Trip

Train travel is generally slower than air travel, but it allows you to relax and enjoy the scenery, which is a big part of the experience. Many train trips offer sleeper cars where you can rest and sleep during the night and wake up at a new destination in the morning.

Some train trips also have stops along the way where you can get off and explore the local area before getting back on the train. Depending on the train trip, the duration can range from a few hours to several days. It’s always best to check the specific itinerary and schedule of the train trip you’re interested in to plan your journey accordingly.

Preparing for a multi-day train trip involves some planning and preparation to ensure that you have everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable journey.

Check the Train Schedule

Before departing, check the train schedule to plan your journey and know when you’ll be arriving at your destination. Familiarize yourself with the stops (if any) along the way.

Know What Is Included

Find out what is included and what is not included in your package or ticket purchase. Things like snacks and meals may or may not be part of the deal.

Pack Light and Accordingly

Since space is limited on trains, it’s best to pack light and bring only the essentials. Bring comfortable clothes, a few changes of clothing, and toiletries. Most train trips have a baggage limit, so be sure to check the specific requirements before packing.

Bring Entertainment

For the longer multi-day trips, it’s a good idea to bring some entertainment. This can include books , magazines, music, podcasts , or movies on a tablet or laptop. Don’t forget to pack your chargers for your electronic devices.

Check the Weather

Depending on the season and location of your train trip, the weather can vary widely. Be sure to check the weather forecast and pack accordingly, especially if you will be doing some excursions off the train.

Bring Snacks and Drinks

While most train trips offer dining cars or food service, it’s always a good idea to bring some snacks and drinks, especially if you have any dietary restrictions.

How to Choose a Train Trip

Several personal factors would make you pick one train trip over another. Here are a few things to consider.

Scenic Beauty

Do you enjoy nature and panoramic landscapes? If so, choose train trips that offer stunning views of mountains, forests, and coastlines.

Comfort and Convenience

Choose train trips that offer comfortable seating and modern sleeper cars for multi-day trips. Check the photos of the accommodations on the website.

Safety and Security

Look into train trips that are known for being safe and secure, that are reliable and that have a good reputation for customer service.

Accessibility

If you have mobility issues or other disabilities, research train trips that have accessibility and accommodations that suit your needs.

Cultural and Historical Significance

Do you love history and culture? Look for train trips that pass through areas with significant cultural or historical significance, such as national parks, historic landmarks, or iconic cities.

Read Reviews from Fellow Travelers

Read comments and ratings on websites like Tripadvisor and Lonely Planet to learn about others’ first-hand experiences.

Perfect Train Trips for Women Over 50

It will be a fun adventure regardless of what the point of it is.

Tina

I’ve been on several of these train trips multiple times. I think it’s important to distinguish between Amtrak and other private RRs such as Rocky Mountaineer and Silverton Durango. That affects price and available amenities. I love train travel but this article is incomplete in that way.

Nancy

These will be fun adventures for me. Thank you.

Karen

Thank you for this information on my favorite way to travel. When I moved to the West Coast many years ago, I had a sleeper on the Empire Builder and loved all of it. The only thing I wish I could’ve changed was the timing – it was autumn and by the time we reached Glacier National Park in Montana, it was dusk and too dark to see much. I’m looking forward to some of the other trips you mentioned.

Historically, travel suppliers have often courted senior travelers with special discounts. But the current status across travel types is uneven: Some supplier groups offer senior discounts almost entirely; others, like airlines hardly offer them at all anymore. Often, you need to know where to look to find them and how to secure one—but sometimes all it takes is asking for a senior travel discount to be applied.

The Best Senior Discounts in Travel:

Some suppliers offer percent or dollars-off discounts to senior travelers, typically starting at age 60 or 65. Here’s my take on the best brands for senior discounts, plus some great overall senior-focused brands, for every type of travel—from airlines to tours, cruises, rail, and more.

Airline: British Airways via AARP

Once common, senior discounts on airline tickets have virtually disappeared from the marketplace. Southwest, the last holdout among U.S. lines, discontinued its special senior fares in 2019.

One of the last remaining airline senior discounts is the AARP discount on British Airways , which is available to just about any senior as $65 off any economy or premium economy ticket, and as $200 off any business class ticket. Discounts apply to any ticket purchase, including flash sales. Seniors need to buy directly from British Airways through its AARP portal to get the discount.

While $65 may not be a game changer, you don’t sacrifice anything to get it. And $200 off a business class ticket is especially good when you start with a flash-sale fare. However, the main caveat is that British Airways’ business class on most planes isn’t typically anything special. Your best bet might instead be to use the discount for a true business class ticket on a code-shared flight: British Airways flights operates by American Airlines or Iberia have a more competitive business class right now.

(Note: Throughout 2020 British Airways is rolling out new business class suites on some international routes .)

Hotel: No Clear Winner

Most major international hotel chains offer modest senior discounts, typically of five to 10 percent, to seniors at various ages (usually 50 through 65). In some cases, discounts are available through AARP; in others, no membership is required. And the AARP deals are seldom any better than those offered to members of AAA and many other organizations. Senior discounts at hotels are most prevalent in the U.S. and Canada. Typically, local chain and independent hotels in Asia and Europe do not offer senior discounts.

Over the years, my conclusion about AARP or other senior discounts has been that they’re good for at least a small price cut when you can’t find a better deal through some other source available to travelers of any age. Among the ones to check first are: Opaque rates through Hotwire or Priceline (which reveal the specific property after purchase), flash-sale rates, and air/hotel packages for your destination.

Rental Car: Avis and Budget via AARP

Just about anyone can qualify for a typical rental car discount. But the AARP deal with Avis and Budget is different because, in addition to a 30-percent discounted rate, the base rate includes better liability coverage than almost all other rates.

Seniors with car preferences should also consider National. With its Emerald Aisle program , National pioneered the approach of allowing each renter to choose a preferred car from those available. For those seniors who are fussy about which model they drive, National’s system works especially well.

Rail: Amtrak, VIA Rail Canada, and Eurail Pass

The best rail brand depends on your destination. Amtrak currently offers 10 percent discount on coach class travel for travelers age 65 and over—or age 60 and over on cross-border travel with VIA Rail. That’s on most trains, but not the high-speed Acela, the Auto Train , Saver Fares , or on business class or sleeper-accommodation trains. Although Amtrak has been doing senior discounts for many years, it has in the recent past listed senior discounts as “ending soon,” with neither a specific cutoff date nor any suggestion of what might come. Amtrak also offers time-limited special senior discounts. Current offerings include a 50 percent discount on Downeaster trains and a 15 percent discount for seniors age 62 or over on Capitol Corridor , Pacific Surfliner , and San Joaquins lines.

Canada’s VIA Rail goes a bit further than Amtrak. It offers discounts around 10 percent on all trains, including sleeper accommodations as well as coach. But the very best deals are the weekly discount promotions , where cuts are far deeper on selected routes. Note: At this writing, the VIA Rail website says: “Discount Sleeper Deals will return in early January 2020.”

In Europe, you have a bunch of choices: No one line is “best” for everyone; but here’s how you can choose the one that’s best for your trip:

The Eurail Pass now offers senior passes for travelers age 60-plus at 10 percent off. The discount is available for both first- and coach-class travel throughout Eurail’s 31 countries. But there’s a big catch: high co-payments for travel on almost all of the top international high-speed trains—the ones most tourist visitors want to use. Several single-country passes also offer senior versions, typically at about 10 percent less than any-age passes. Eurail passes work best if you concentrate long-haul travel on a few days during your stay in Europe.

If, instead, you plan a lot of short trips, you might prefer a senior card that offers discounts to seniors age 60 or over on all applicable train tickets for a full year: The most popular are the U.K Senior Railcard for 33 percent off most fares, the French Advantage Senior Card for 30 percent off most fares, and the Italian Silver Card for 15-25 percent off most fares (free for travelers age 70 and over).

Outside of Europe, it’s hard to find other senior discounts. The most popular railpass outside of Europe is Japan Rail Pass, which doesn’t offer any senior deals.

Tour and Cruise Provider: Collette via AARP

The AARP deal with Collette Travel features discounts of $50 to $100 per person on most tours and river cruises , and discounts up to $450 person on some sale deals. Colleette provides good value overall for its many destinations, so the discount makes it even better.

Public Transit: Philadelphia and Pittsburgh

Seniors age 65 and over travel free in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh—a deal that’s really hard to beat. Most large public transit systems throughout the U.S. offer senior fares, typically about half off. Senior discounts typically apply to multi-ride and all-day pass tickets as well as single ride. Some systems require that you show a Medicare card or increasingly, a special senior ID. Some allow you to purchase online; others require that you show up at a local office. (Very few cities outside the U.S. offer similar senior deals.)

Best Travel Brands for Seniors Overall:

Not all the best senior deals are discounts: Some outfits tailor their products and services to the needs of senior travelers without actually discounting any prices.

Road Scholar and Grand Circle, for Packaged Tours

Formerly known as Elderhostel, Road Scholar excels at offering seniors an unbeatable combination of outstanding travel experiences with continuing education, and at a good value. It focuses on travelers age 55 and over, offering thousands of tour options designed for senior travelers in more than 90 countries. Tours of varying physical requirements are offered, from mild to rugged. Road Scholar does best with tours in the U.S. Its overseas tours and cruises, although excellent, typically do not offer quite as good values as its domestic offerings. Even so, Road Scholar is hard to beat for any senior who wants to broaden his or her horizons through travel.

If you’re looking for a more conventional tour, consider Grand Circle Travel , a tour company that focuses on travelers age 50 or over. Tours are paced for seniors; they’re offered worldwide, from the U.S. to Antarctica to Wales. Grand Circle also features no-cost or low-cost single supplements to serve the ever-increasing demand from seniors who travel solo.

Viking for River and Ocean Cruises

I agree with SmarterTravel sister site Cruise Critic ’s judgement that the best cruise line for seniors is Viking Cruises . Viking targets “well-traveled adults 50 years of age and older.” River cruises are generally more interesting experience to seniors than the mass-market Caribbean, Mexican, or Mediterranean cruises.

Set on an ocean cruise? Cruise Critic also favors several ocean cruise lines, the best of which include such luxury-level outfits as Oceana, Regent Seven Seas, and Silverseas. They’re clearly great for seniors—but expensive. Cruise Critic does not include any of the three giant mass-market lines—Carnival, Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean—in its “best for seniors” compilation, but it does include two notch-above cruise lines, Celebrity and Holland-America.

Off Season Travel Deals

Off season travel discounts are among the best senior discounts.

Taking advantage of your time flexibility can give older travelers great savings on rental accommodations.

Many tourist locations have off-season rates. You will have a better chance of avoiding the crowds of the main season and often get better service at hotels and restaurants.

Your trip will include a less crowded visit to a beach, a museum, a golf course and basically your entire itinerary.

If you visit Costa Rica, you will benefit from low season rates during May or November. We found that the sunny skies will be complemented by 10% to 40% lower rates.

Here is an example of a beautiful sunny 82° day on North Beach in Ogunquit, Maine in September. When the "Summer Crowds" have gone!

Group and club travel.

Another alternative for some of the best senior discount is to take advantage of the group rates available to members of travel groups for seniors   and travel clubs for seniors .

Solo travelers, traveling in a group receive socialization as well as discounts. Group travel hosts have senior vacation packages and vacations for seniors on a budget.

The groups can be free but the clubs charge a small fee for membership.

Receiving the club's discounts can more than make up for the cost of membership.

Home and Abroad Tours

Many companies offer Tours customized for seniors.

Since these companies can generally get the best flight deals as well as a number of other discounts, these tours can be a bargain. There is a huge variety of senior tours.

Walking International Adventures has walking tours suitable for seniors and  offer a pre-registration discount on their tours.

Adventures Abroad even has custom a custom walking tour for grandparents and grandchildren.

US Air

British Airways doesn't offer a direct senior citizen discount but AARP members can save when booking through AARP.

Low cost airlines such as JetBlue, Spirit, Frontier and Virgin airlines do not age related discounts but offer various discounted specials on their websites.

It is worth checking airlines around the world for senior discounts if your travel includes those destinations.

Please understand that these airline deals are not always available on-line. They do not always apply to every flight destination. Always call the airline directly if interested in receiving this type of discount.

Booking flights on Monday through Wednesday will save on airfare.

6 Airline Travel Tips to Save Money

Why not list your house with a house exchange?

A house or home exchange is a mutual exchange of homes for a set period of time between two home owners.

Both parties can enjoy totally free vacation accommodations rather than staying in expensive hotels.

Choose a reputable company for the safety of your property. You shouldn’t have any problems because they have regulations. The benefit of free rent is huge.

Stay at a Hostel

You can save a lot of money by staying at a Hostel.

An older friend recently returned from Italy. She stayed at a Hostel located in a beautiful location and it was quiet in regard to the guests.

However, young people who enjoy a party often frequent Hostels. So, if you like quiet, be aware when inquiring about a Hostel.

Vacations for singles over 50s & 60s

Group laughing at a bar at sunset

Traveling single? Small group travel could be just the ticket

Is a  Japanese  onsen calling you? Or maybe a flavor-packed taco in the streets of  Mexico City  has your name on it? Whether you’re traveling solo, single or simply can’t be labeled, our small group tours are the perfect way to explore a destination and meet like-minded people. While our trips aren’t exclusively for single travelers in their  50s or 60s , you'll be part of a small group of intergenerational, adventure-hungry individuals who are just as keen to explore as you are. From swapping anecdotes over Aperols on the  Amalfi Coast  to late-night chats under the desert skies of Wadi Rum, it’s often those moments of connection – big and small – that are most memorable.

Let's create an exclusive trip for your group.

Our trips can be great for singles over 50 and 60 as we take care of safety, logistics and transport so you can focus your time on the joy of travel. We don’t offer the classic ‘singles-only’ tours, but we do provide the perfect base for people looking to get to know others, usually a varied mix of ages, nationalities, cultures and more. Since our trips are so diverse, this could mean you’re with couples in their 40s, singles in their 20s, family groups or people traveling on their own in their fifties and beyond. Our trips aren’t specifically designed for making perfect matches, but hey, if it happens, it  happens .

The best part of traveling in a small group is the friends you can make in the most unlikely of places – we’re talking while hiking the  Inca Trail  or cooking dhal in  Sri Lanka . It also means a bunch of new faces to share the world’s most epic experiences with and a few people around to watch your back (especially when walking through a traffic crossing in  Vietnam ). No matter who you’re sharing your trip with, you’ll be docking at unbelievable sites, meeting local people and getting a one-of-a-kind journey - single or not, we think that's pretty epic.

Traveling solo at any age can feel like a big deal, especially when venturing to far-off places. That’s why small group trips are the perfect fit, no matter if you’re traveling alone at 25 or 65. We’ll do the planning, manage the itinerary, handle the transport and keep  safety  in mind - all so you can immerse yourself to the max. Not to mention, your guide will be able to support you with potential language barriers, give recommendations, show you the best spots for photos and so much more. Don’t just take our word for it; find out for yourself.

Maybe you’ve already seen the big sites and now looking for a different experience or new perspective. That’s where we come in. Our trips are led by our Local Leaders, all of whom are experts in their corner of the world and are out there showing it to others right now. Their knowledge of their country’s attractions, delicacies, cultures and communities is something you probably won’t get to experience elsewhere. Find yourself ducking into unknown hotspots and learning more than just the basics when you’re on one of our trips.

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid travelers are connected more by attitude than age. They’re a friendly, open-minded and curious bunch, and many elect to travel solo. Our small groups are a mix of genders and ages between 18 and 70, with like-minded travelers from all over the world.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips (excluding family trips), the minimum age for travelers is 15. An adult must accompany all children under 18.

Our overland trips have a minimum age of 18.

Kiddos younger than 15 can join us on our family trips and Short Break Adventures , but make sure to check each trip for its minimum age.

Most trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a self-assessment form is required for all travelers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes to a minimum. Small groups allow us to remain flexible with itineraries, use public transportation wherever we can and visit communities without intimidating the locals.

Most Intrepid trips run with an intimate group of 12-16 travelers, though they usually average around 10 people.

Our overland trips use purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed in the description of each trip.

Is it okay that I'm travelling alone?

Absolutely! The beauty of the Intrepid style of travel is that many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. Please carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips, you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can, we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical, we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact us for further information on any of our itineraries.

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation, but minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

For travelers who reside within the European Union, Switzerland or the USA, the requirement to purchase travel insurance cannot be compulsory. However, the purchase of travel insurance is still highly recommended, and travelers from these regions who decline travel insurance when traveling outside their home region must sign a Travel Insurance Waiver Form at the Group Meeting, recognizing personal responsibility for emergency medical and repatriation costs should they arise.

Will I have my own room?

It’s completely up to you. On our trips, rooming is organized on a twin-share basis, and we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. But if you'd like your own room, an individual room is available on the majority of our trips (it’s just a small extra charge). Just mention this to our  customer service team  when booking your trip and they'll arrange it for you.

As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please  contact us  so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open gender, multi-share basis (for example on a felucca in Egypt or an overnight train in Vietnam). In those instances it will clearly be stated in our Essential Trip Information prior to booking and traveling.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling solo or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). The amount of free time depends on the  travel style  - you can ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.
