Heythrop Park Resort gears up for debut Tour event
Estate Manager Matthew Cropper and his 12-strong team at Heythrop Park Resort, near Oxford, have spent the last few months working closely with the Tour to produce optimal playing conditions during the forthcoming Bridgestone Challenge event, which runs from August 25th - 28th.
"I'd say it has been more of a polish than a transformation" said Cropper, aged 26, who took up his new post at Heythrop Park Resort in February of this year. "The Bainbridge golf course has been in very good condition this season anyway, and it was fundamentally designed as a Tour layout, so we have been mainly taking care of the finer details such as achieving the right green speeds and cutting heights as specified by the Tour."
Cropper, a Bristolian who previously worked at Chipping Sodbury GC and Wentworth Club, feels that the golf course is now Tour-prepared. "We had the Championship layout" he said, "and we have now taken it to Championship standard as regards course conditioning.
"We have increased our mowing regime, and have topped up bunkers where necessary to achieve the required depth of sand for the European Challenge Tour. We have also recently improved not just our bunker drainage, but our whole drainage system for a sustainable future here at the Resort."
The giant 440-acre Heythrop Park Resort keeps Cropper's team busy away from the golf course too, with extensive gardens, lawns and woodlands to maintain, as well as a FootGolf course, croquet lawn and tennis courts.
The 7,088 Par 72 Bainbridge Course at Heythrop Park Resort will be closed to all but Bridgestone Challenge competitors during tournament week, which starts on Monday 22nd August.
A strong entry is expected as European Challenge Tour golfers compete to top the Road To Oman Rankings. "We are particularly honoured to host this event when you consider that Heythrop Park Resort will be the only official European Challenge Tour venue in England in 2016" said Resort Director Paul Russell.
"It has long been our aim to host a full Tour event" he said, "and hosting the Bridgestone Challenge later this month will see the culmination of a lot of hard work by the superb team here at Heythrop Park Resort.
"We are determined to make the most of this rare opportunity, which will finally see Heythrop Park Resort join an exclusive club of fully-fledged English Tour venues. We hope to attract more Tour events in the future - but most of all, we encourage golfers from across the UK to come and sample what Tour-quality golf looks and feels like, and also stay a while to sample our renowned hotel and hospitality!"

Challenge Tour a great place to start, says cup hero Jimmy Mullen
Monday 8 February 2016 17:15, UK
England's Jimmy Mullen says playing on the Challenge Tour is a great place to start his career after failing to get his card in the final stage of European Tour qualifying school.
After turning pro in September following an heroic performance at the Walker Cup, Mullen made a big impact on his professional debut.
Having become the fourth player in Walker Cup history to win all four matches, Mullen led after the opening day of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship after posting a first-round 64 at Kingsbarns.
The 22-year-old from Devon held the lead two days on the trot before finishing tied 30th alongside South African duo Branden Grace and Justin Walters.
The year was going absolutely amazing then it all just came crashing down at the end Jimmy Mullen
Once he got through the first qualifying stage for the European Tour, it wasn't long before Mullen picked up his maiden victory. Only two months after turning professional, he won the second qualifying stage of Q-School at Campo de Golf El Slater in November. But only one week later he failed to make the cut at the final stage of qualifying school. Despite initial success, Mullen was upbeat about learning from his mistakes while on the Challenge Tour.

"I put so much effort into making the Walker Cup team and did great," he said. "I then played great at the Dunhill. The year was going absolutely amazing then it all just came crashing down at the end.
"But you've got to learn from it and move on. I've got to learn to play professional golf somewhere and the Challenge Tour is going to be a great place for me to start.

"A lot of great players started there and I don't see the problem with me starting there and learning my trade there."
The first event of the Challenge Tour is not until Marcy 17 in Kenya and Mullen has used the extra time over the winter working on his driving in particular.
"It's always been a weakness of mine," he said. "When I was at qualifying school I played with Edoardo Molinari and he told me the importance of driving. So this winter I've mainly been focusing on getting my driving in play more often as that's what lost me getting my card that week.
"I'll play the first seven or eight and hopefully I'll play well and get a good ranking. My goal is to finish top 50 so I can play on the European Tour next year.
His ambitions reach beyond the European Tour, but Mullen remains practical about the road ahead. "I really want to play on the PGA Tour but I want to learn a lot before I'm headed in that direction." he said. "I need to get my European Tour card first and establish myself, learn a lot there and one day hopefully move to the PGA Tour. "Since I was seven the one tournament I wanted to win was the green jacket so to play there one day would be amazing. But I've got a long way to go before that happens just yet." Mullen will not be without familiar company when he joins the Challenge Tour, as many of his fellow Walker Cup team-mates also hope to get their European Tour card by the end of the year.
"There's going to be six of us I think playing on the Challenge Tour from the Walker Cup so we can play practice rounds together and it will be in the same company we've had for the last three or four years," he added. "My plan is to travel a lot with Ashley Chesters this year. We've become great friends through England golf and during our first year we can travel together. It just makes it a lot easier, more friendly atmosphere and it will still feel like we are playing amateur golf which I think might help us." Jimmy was speaking at the announcement of Bridgestone UK's hat-trick of golf sponsorships at Heythrop Park. The tyre manufacturer is the official partner of the European Tour British Masters, the Bridgestone Challenge, a Challenge Tour event, and the Bridgestone DriveGuard Trophy.

Heythrop Park – The Cotswolds Playground
Published: 19 September 2023 Last updated: 22 September 2023
Enjoy a luxury stay at Heythrop Park in the Cotswolds.
Heythrop Park offers one of the best stay-and-play golf breaks in the UK.
With a superb championship golf course and a luxurious adult-only hotel, this Cotswolds playground is the ideal destination for a getaway. Whether it’s high-quality golf, incredible views, beautiful food, or the ultimate leisure and spa facilities, Heythrop has it all.
What to expect from the golf course
Heythrop Park’s quintessential English championship golf course will test your driving ability as well as your accuracy. Twisting through 440 acres of undulating terrain, the 7,088-yard, par 72 course meanders over ridges, through valleys, and is studded with ancient woodland, lakes, streams, and strategically placed bunkers, while also being surrounded by amazing views of the Cotswolds.
The Bainbridge Course was redesigned in 2009 by Mackenzie and Ebert, the architects behind recent changes at several well-known Open Championship venues including Turnberry, Royal St George’s and Royal Portrush.
Heythrop Park has also been host to numerous high-profile professional tournaments, including the English trophy on the European Challenge tour.
This challenging course provides a selection of stand-out holes. The 314-yard par-4 6th, Archer Bridge, where the green nestles beside a fishing pond, the spectacular par-5 11th, South Avenue, which heads downhill towards the old Skating Lake before turning sharply to the left to a small green that sits between the water and the woodland, and the 528-yard par-5 14th, The Glyne, which is similar to Augusta’s 13th hole in as much as it sweeps from right to left around trees to a low-lying green situated close to an 18th century stone bridge.
Last, but by no means least, is the par-5 18th, Grand Avenue. This closing hole has a strong claim to be regarded as the straightest hole in golf. Measuring close to 600 yards, it seems even longer still as the view is elongated by the majestic Heythrop Park Manor House which provides a stunning backdrop situated some 100 yards behind the final green.
What makes Heythrop Park’s hotel special?
A golf break with Warner at Heythrop Park is more than just an amazing round of golf. Heythrop Park Hotel is a gorgeously designed, adult-only hotel that’s full of comfortable lounges and buzzing bars.
Every stay at Heythrop Park includes a range of accommodation from Cosy rooms for solo travelers, to opulent Mansion rooms in the Manor House. Plus legendary breakfasts, three-course evening dining, a range of daytime activities including archery and rifle shooting, leisure and spa facilities, and live evening entertainment is all included in the price.
So after a round or two, you can sneak off for a dip in the pool, sit down for a delicious meal in a choice of three restaurants, then enjoy a night full of thrilling live entertainment – and you won’t have to pay anything extra.

What is the polished Heythrop Park Resort like?
In two weeks Heythrop Park Resort will host its first European Challenge Tour Event, the Bridgestone Challenge, which runs from August 25 th – 28 th . Bridgestone, early this year has signed a sponsorship deal with the European Tour and thus became an official partner of this year’s European Tour British Masters .
Europe’s top developmental tour will return to the UK for the first time since 2012.
Estate Manager Matthew Cropper said, “ The Bainbridge golf course has been in very good condition this season anyway, and it was fundamentally designed as a Tour layout, so we have been mainly taking care of the finer details such as achieving the right green speeds and cutting heights as specified by the Tour. ”
The 7,088 Par 72 Bainbridge Course at Heythrop Park Resort will be closed to all but Bridgestone Challenge competitors during tournament week, which starts on Monday 22 nd August.
How could create Heythrop Park Resort an unforgettable event?
I hope it is not too late to highlight for Heythrop Park Resort the importance of getting prepared for the connected customers ‘ expectations . They are those people who use their smartphones habitually (e.g. check information, take a selfie, share photos/videos etc.).
The very same people are looking for consistency of experience . When experiences are good, being always-connected means they will tell the world about it (unfortunately, also the bad experiences as well).
If Heythrop Park Resort wants to come up with a meaningful customer experience for these people, then he should think from the customer journey perspective. Since today we should not only focus on key touchpoints, but focus on the whole process from raising awareness to post-event activities .
Some important issues to consider:
- How to give them personalized experience , and deliver them the most relevant information as per their needs, desires, and interests? Let’s not forget that you are not marketing AT people , but you are influencing them in an environment where they already have information and opinion about the place.
- How could they feel more comfortable and freely enjoy themselves? (E.g. free Wi-Fi)
- How will Heythrop Park Resort nurture the relationship with the guests/participants after the event to generate extra revenues?
- Be ready for however the customer chooses to interact with you !
