C&C Travel-Sri Lanka has been family owned and operated by two young brothers since May, 2009. We do not have a hundred years long history, a pretentious company name, or a postmodern synthetic office. Our team is made up of honest, outspoken people who do not over promise, do not use smoke and mirrors and do not speak in cringe-worthy public relation language. We speak with passion, belief and understanding behind us. In 2009, we incorporated as a partnership business firm and, we have newly partnered with C&C Travel in Copenhagen, Denmark as an International Strategic Business Conglomerate.

We went on a trip through Sri Lanka, bought through C&C and handled by Different Discovery. Our driver Ranjan was amazing, and gave us many great experiences. He was very kind and showed us the country’s culture, while we still could decide what we wanted to do. Throughout the trip where we went to Habarana, Kandy, Ella, Yala and Unawatuna we loved every moment of it.

We went on a two week travel through some of Sri Lanka arranged by C&C travel. We went from south east in Unawatuna to Tissamaharama, Ella, Kandy, Sigiriya and finished our trip in Trincomalee. Throughout we were pleased to have the excellent driver Ranjan Michael from Different Discovery. With Ranjan Michael driving and guiding you feel safe and are sure to see and experience all the best things Sri Lanka has to offer. He is very kind and has a good sense of humor. He has many relevant suggestions for activities and is spontaneous and quick to pull over for us to get the best pictures and viewpoints. He made sure we experienced several different tasteful fruits. We would highly recommend Ranjan Michael as driver and guide in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka travel advice

Latest updates: Editorial change

Last updated: June 4, 2024 08:03 ET

On this page

Safety and security, entry and exit requirements, laws and culture, natural disasters and climate, sri lanka - exercise a high degree of caution.

Exercise a high degree of caution in Sri Lanka due to demonstrations, the threat of terrorist attacks and crime.

Current economic situation

Sri Lanka is experiencing economic difficulties which may result in limited availability of resources, including basic necessities like medicines, fuel and specific food items. Power outages, though infrequent, may occur.

The economic situation may also impact public services, including healthcare.

If you are in Sri Lanka:

  • keep supplies of food, water and fuel in case of lengthy disruptions
  • make sure to have sufficient supply of any required medicines on hand as availability may be limited
  • avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • follow the instructions of local authorities

Demonstrations and civil unrest

Demonstrations occur frequently in Colombo, and occasionally elsewhere in the country. Security forces may use tear gas and water cannons during violent protests. Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

  • Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities
  • Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

More about mass gatherings (large-scale events)

Security forces

The Sri Lankan military continues to maintain a strong presence in the country’s North and East, including the Jaffna Peninsula. Military and police checkpoints can be established and road closures can occur suddenly.

Security forces have wide-ranging powers, including the authority to:

  • impose curfews
  • detain without charge for extended periods
  • search individuals, vehicles, residences and commercial premises

Individuals of Sri Lankan heritage, including those who don’t have Sri Lankan citizenship, have been detained on occasion by police or security forces.

  • Always carry formal photographic identification with you
  • Keep an eye out for signage warning of military or demining zones
  • Keep to well-traveled roads
  • Avoid venturing in forested areas or abandoned properties
  • Monitor local news for latest updates
  • If you’re detained, ask the authorities to contact the High Commission of Canada

There is a threat of terrorism. Past attacks have resulted in fatalities.

Further attacks can’t be ruled out. Targets could include:

  • government buildings, including schools
  • places of worship
  • airports and other transportation hubs and networks
  • public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels and other sites frequented by foreigners

Always be aware of your surroundings when in public places.

Violent crime occurs, including harassment and assault aimed at Western foreigners.

Petty crime such as purse snatching and pickpocketing is common, especially on public transportation. Theft has occurred in hotels and guesthouses.

Credit card fraud is common. Pay very close attention to your credit card when it is being handled. To minimize risks, you should opt to pay in cash whenever possible.

Ensure that your personal belongings, including passports and other travel documents, are secure at all times.

Inter-communal tensions

Inter-communal and religious tensions exist throughout the country and have led to violence. Further violent incidents could occur.

Spiked food and drinks

Foreigners have been targeted in incidents of drink spiking, often combined with sexual assault or theft. Never leave food or drinks unattended or in the care of strangers. Be wary of accepting snacks, beverages, gum or cigarettes from new acquaintances. These items may contain drugs that could put you at risk of sexual assault and robbery.

Women’s safety

Women are often the target for unwanted attention. They should exercise caution when travelling alone.

Advice for women travellers

Swimming conditions may be unsafe. Follow the advice and warnings of local authorities.

Water safety abroad

Tourist facilities

Tourist facilities are widely available but quality varies, especially inland. You should arrange travel to remote areas through a reputable travel agency.

Road safety

Road conditions are usually poor outside major cities.

Road accidents, often causing death and injuries, are common due to poorly maintained vehicles, erratic driving practices and pedestrians and roaming animals on the road.

Roads may be closed on short notice.

Public transportation

Travel by bus is generally unsafe due to aggressive drivers and the risk of theft.

We do not make assessments on the compliance of foreign domestic airlines with international safety standards.

Information about foreign domestic airlines

Every country or territory decides who can enter or exit through its borders. The Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet your destination’s entry or exit requirements.

We have obtained the information on this page from the Sri Lankan authorities. It can, however, change at any time.

Verify this information with the  Foreign Representatives in Canada .

Entry requirements vary depending on the type of passport you use for travel.

Before you travel, check with your transportation company about passport requirements. Its rules on passport validity may be more stringent than the country’s entry rules.

Regular Canadian passport

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date you expect to leave Sri Lanka.

Passport for official travel

Different entry rules may apply.

Official travel

Passport with “X” gender identifier

While the Government of Canada issues passports with an “X” gender identifier, it cannot guarantee your entry or transit through other countries. You might face entry restrictions in countries that do not recognize the “X” gender identifier. Before you leave, check with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

Other travel documents

Different entry rules may apply when travelling with a temporary passport or an emergency travel document. Before you leave, check with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

This section contains information on possible health risks and restrictions regularly found or ongoing in the destination. Follow this advice to lower your risk of becoming ill while travelling. Not all risks are listed below.

Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic preferably 6 weeks before you travel to get personalized health advice and recommendations.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary.

Yellow fever   is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

  • There is no risk of yellow fever in this country.

Country Entry Requirement*

  • Proof of vaccination is required if you are coming from or have transited through an airport of a country   where yellow fever occurs.

Recommendation

  • Vaccination is not recommended.
  • Discuss travel plans, activities, and destinations with a health care professional.
  • Contact a designated  Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre  well in advance of your trip to arrange for vaccination.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada * It is important to note that  country entry requirements  may not reflect your risk of yellow fever at your destination. It is recommended that you contact the nearest  diplomatic or consular office  of the destination(s) you will be visiting to verify any additional entry requirements.

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

In this destination, rabies is commonly carried by dogs and some wildlife, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal. While travelling, take precautions , including keeping your distance from animals (including free-roaming dogs), and closely supervising children.

If you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional. In this destination, rabies treatment may be limited or may not be available, therefore you may need to return to Canada for treatment.

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who are at high risk of exposure (e.g., occupational risk such as veterinarians and wildlife workers, children, adventure travellers and spelunkers, and others in close contact with animals).

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection that can cause swelling of the brain.  It is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Risk is very low for most travellers. Travellers at relatively higher risk may want to consider vaccination for JE prior to travelling.

Travellers are at higher risk if they will be:

  • travelling long term (e.g. more than 30 days)
  • making multiple trips to endemic areas
  • staying for extended periods in rural areas
  • visiting an area suffering a JE outbreak
  • engaging in activities involving high contact with mosquitos (e.g., entomologists)

Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.

 The flu occurs worldwide.

  •  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
  •  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
  •  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round.

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

Typhoid is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Travellers going to countries in South Asia should speak to a health care professional about getting vaccinated.

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

  • Learn more about food and water precautions to take to avoid getting sick by visiting our eat and drink safely abroad page. Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!
  • Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
  • Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs.

Travellers' diarrhea is the most common illness affecting travellers. It is spread from eating or drinking contaminated food or water.

Risk of developing travellers' diarrhea increases when travelling in regions with poor standards of hygiene and sanitation. Practise safe food and water precautions.

The most important treatment for travellers' diarrhea is rehydration (drinking lots of fluids). Carry oral rehydration salts when travelling.

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

  • Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
  • Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
  • Minimize exposure to insects
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

To learn more about how you can reduce your risk of infection and disease caused by bites, both at home and abroad, visit our insect bite prevention page.

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

There is a risk of chikungunya in this country.  The risk may vary between regions of a country.  Chikungunya is a virus spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Chikungunya can cause a viral disease that typically causes fever and pain in the joints. In some cases, the joint pain can be severe and last for months or years.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times. There is no vaccine available for chikungunya.

  • In this country,   dengue  is a risk to travellers. It is a viral disease spread to humans by mosquito bites.
  • Dengue can cause flu-like symptoms. In some cases, it can lead to severe dengue, which can be fatal.
  • The level of risk of dengue changes seasonally, and varies from year to year. The level of risk also varies between regions in a country and can depend on the elevation in the region.
  • Mosquitoes carrying dengue typically bite during the daytime, particularly around sunrise and sunset.
  • Protect yourself from mosquito bites . There is no vaccine or medication that protects against dengue.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

  •   washing your hands often
  • avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
  • avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.

Tuberculosis is an infection caused by bacteria and usually affects the lungs.

For most travellers the risk of tuberculosis is low.

Travellers who may be at high risk while travelling in regions with risk of tuberculosis should discuss pre- and post-travel options with a health care professional.

High-risk travellers include those visiting or working in prisons, refugee camps, homeless shelters, or hospitals, or travellers visiting friends and relatives.

Medical services and facilities

Medical services and facilities do not meet the standards you might normally expect in Canada.

Medical facilities in certain areas outside of Colombo are limited, particularly in the north. In the event of a major accident or illness, medical evacuation is often necessary. Medical transport is very expensive.

Medical facilities may require confirmation of insurance coverage, guarantee of payment or an up-front deposit before admitting patients.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Travel health and safety

Keep in Mind...

The decision to travel is the sole responsibility of the traveller. The traveller is also responsible for his or her own personal safety.

Be prepared. Do not expect medical services to be the same as in Canada. Pack a   travel health kit , especially if you will be travelling away from major city centres.

You must abide by local laws.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Sri Lanka.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Sri Lanka, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Sri Lankan court.

If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Sri Lanka to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies.

Top picks of 2024

Sri Lanka is packed with beauty, adventure and history, and is overall affordable for US tourists. Cash, credit cards and debit cards are all accepted, and you can exchange 1 USD for around 156 Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). That means more rupees to ride tri-shaws to explore the cities, personal tours of the mountains and of course, more to eat and drink.

With credit cards doing a lot of the heavy lifting for purchases, it pays to choose a card that waives foreign transaction fees. Let us help you figure out the right combination of cash and credit cards to bring on your trip to Sri Lanka.

ATMs accepting Visa and Mastercard are widely available in cities and towns. Be sure to notify your bank that you’ll be traveling, so they don’t flag any Sri Lankan purchases as suspicious. Because the Sri Lankan government tightly monitors money that is brought in and leaves the country, keep all certificates you get when exchanging your money. You may be asked for it when you leave.

stack of credit cards

Using a credit card

You’ll find that Visa and Mastercard are accepted in major cities and some towns. It’s best to reserve credit cards for purchases rather than cash withdrawals, as they come with hefty fees. Some credit cards charge foreign transaction fees when you make purchases abroad, so look at cards that waive those fees, like the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card (Terms apply, see rates & fees ). Some cards also offer rewards or frequent flyer programs and can be a good way to pay for flights for future vacations. Review your travel habits and compare travel cards to find one that offers the best value for your needs. And to prevent unintentional card locks, always notify your credit card company whenever you plan on using your card abroad.

  • Tip: Before you leave on your vacation, check to see if your credit card offers any travel protection or insurance.
  • Protected by PIN and chip
  • Access to a line of credit
  • Accepted worldwide
  • No currency conversion/ transaction fees on some credit cards
  • Benefits including rewards points on spending, 0% purchases and frequent flyer perks
  • Can charge high withdrawal and cash advance fees
  • Easy to blow your budget

Debit card being swiped in a POS station

Using a debit card

Debit cards can be a good way to access your bank account overseas, making it easier to stick to a budget while on vacation. If you have a bank that offers no international ATM fees, like Betterment Checking , you can save on your withdrawals. You’ll find that most banks in Sri Lanka charge a withdrawal fee, so limit the number of transactions you make. And unless your card is designed for overseas use, you’ll be charged a currency conversion fee if you use your card to make purchases.

  • Best exchange rates
  • Ideal for managing your travel budget
  • ATMs in Sri Lanka charge a service fee

person at laptop with credit card and phone

Using a prepaid travel card

No travel cards support Sri Lanka rupee, so look for a card which waives the currency conversion fee, such as Travelex, if you’re set on taking a travel card when you visit Sri Lanka. These products won’t apply the additional charge for currency conversion when you spend in rupees, which can be higher than what you’d pay if you use your regular debit or credit card. The compromise is these cards will charge you to use an international ATM withdrawal in Sri Lanka, which is a couple of dollars for each withdrawal. You can load these cards with another currency to use at some merchants— but don’t count on it. And you won’t get the best exchange rate.

  • Tip: When you get a travel card, you’ll get two for the same account. This can come in handy if your first card is lost or stolen, so make sure to keep the second card in a safe place.
  • Pre-load and secure your exchange rate in multiple foreign currencies
  • Emergency card replacement and backup cards
  • Local ATM and reloading fee
  • Does not hold LKR

Hand giving cash to other hand

Paying with cash in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is unique in that you are not allowed to bring more than 5,000 LKR, about $30, in or out of the countries without an exchange receipt. Exchange your US dollars at e xchange bureaus at the airport or at a bank. There isn’t a commission, and they offer fair exchange rates. Changing your money at a hotel is possible, but you won’t get the best rate.

  • Greater payment flexibility
  • Convenience
  • More difficult to manage expenses
  • Higher risk of theft

Using traveler’s checks

Once upon a time, traveler’s checks were a popular way to take foreign currency overseas. Today, this type of travel money has been replaced by plastic. travel cards, debit cards and credit cards offer the same security features and are more convenient. In Sri Lanka, traveler’s checks can be cashed at most banks, but be aware that you may wait in long lines and pay a commission.

  • Accepted at most banks and hotels
  • Can be costly with initial purchase charges
  • Not all merchants accept traveler’s checks
  • Takes a lot of time to cash them at banks

Sri Lankan rupees are exotic currency, and you may find it difficult to find a bank or exchange office that can sell you LKR. You’ll get a far better deal if you wait till you arrive in Sri Lanka to purchase rupees. The Sri Lankan rupee comes in the following denominations: 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000.

The official currency of Sri Lanka is the rupee (LKR). The Sri Lankan government has tight control over the national currency, and there are strict limits on the number of rupees you can bring in and out of the country (up to 5,000 LKR). Because the Sri Lankan rupee isn’t an international currency, you’ll need to change your US dollars or withdraw rupees from an ATM when you arrive.

The main banks in Sri Lanka are:

  • Commercial Bank of Ceylon
  • Sampath Bank Plc
  • National Savings Bank
  • People’s Bank
  • Hatton National Bank
  • Seylan Bank Plc
  • National Development Bank Plc
  • Nations Trust Bank Plc

Exchange offices at Colombo and Hambantota airports offer competitive rates, so don’t be afraid to get your cash changed as soon as you get off the plane. Exchange offices at Colombo airport are open 24/7.

Licensed money changers such as jewelers and designated exchange offices may offer a better rate than banks. And sometimes, the rates depend on the denominations you want to change. For example, you may be able to get a better rate exchanging $100 bills compared to lots of $20 bills.

Refreshing in: 60s | Fri, Jun 07, 06:24PM GMT

If you can, avoid changing money at your hotel, as they usually offer a worse rate than banks and dedicated money changers and charge a commission.

Street money changers may offer an attractive rate, but there’s a higher chance of being ripped off. We’ve been told that tourists have a good chance of being short-changed. So get to know the exchange rate and what the rupee notes look like and count your money before you leave the transaction.

  • Tip: Be sure to keep your exchange slip when you get money changed so you can re-exchange cash when you leave the country.

Getting your LKR from an ATM is the best option. If you make large withdrawals each time you use the ATM, you’ll save on fees charged by the ATM and your bank. You can save even more if you find a debit card that waives the international fee and withdrawal fee like a Betterment Checking account.

The banks to use to withdraw cash

Not all banks accept foreign cards. You can make cash withdrawals using your US card at these popular Sri Lankan banks:

  • Commercial Bank
  • National Bank
  • Standard Chartered Bank

You might also be interested in: Make sure you check to see whether the ATM takes your card. The Visa and Mastercard logo should be displayed on the front of the machine.

You’ll get a lot for your dollar in Sri Lanka. Though, expect to pay upwards of 10 times more than the locals for sightseeing tours and excursions. If you’re traveling on a budget, you can spend as little at $15 a day, midrange travelers can expect to spend around $35 a day, and for high-end traveling, plan to spend around $100 a day.

Based on the exchange rate of 1USD = 153.65 LKR

ATM limits in Sri Lanka depend on the ATM. Most dispense between 40,000 to 80,000 LKR at a time. Be aware of what your bank’s daily limits on withdrawals are.

What do I do with my leftover LKR?

There are restrictions on the amount of LKR you can take out of Sri Lanka, so visit the exchange counter at the airport to exchange any leftover rupees. You should have an exchange slip from when you first changed your USD to LKR. Show this slip to get your money changed back before you leave the country.

How much should I tip when I’m in Sri Lanka?

A tip can be a great way to show your appreciation for a job well done. Though tips aren’t required, they are expected in Sri Lanka for services like room cleaning, carrying bags, drink and food service and guided tours. You’ll notice a service charge is included when you dine out and settle your hotel bill.

Tip restaurant and bar staff and drivers 10% of the total bill, 100 rupees a day for cleaners and 50 rupees (per bag) for porters. If you’re visiting a temple or shrine, tip shoe minders 20 rupees. Island car tours will expect a little more, but it’s ultimately your decision.

Hi..I am travelling to srilanka from India..I have a forex card loaded with USD ..what would be the best option to get SLR in cash using the card..At the Airport, jewellers or from the ATM..

Thanks for your comment and I hope you are doing well.

Generally, the best place to exchange your currency depends on your specific situation, your destination and what you’re willing to pay for convenience.

However, if you are taking a prepaid travel money card when you visit Sri Lanka, it won’t be necessary to use exchanges or jewelers because you can use it to withdraw at any local ATMs in Sri Lank if you need cash in rupees(SLR). Although, you may be charged an international withdrawal fee which can be a couple of dollars for each withdrawal.

Using a prepaid travel card is also a convenient way to pay for your spending in rupees especially if the card you have waives the currency conversion fee. And even if they do charge, it’s usually still cheaper than using a credit or debit cards.

Hope this helps and feel free to reach out to us again for further assistance.

Best, Nikki

Will a taxi driver accept U.S. dollars for a short ride?

Thanks for leaving a question on finder.

Generally, taxis could be payed with dollars but it would be convenient for you to have some extra Sri Lankan currency on hand too. You can have your USD exchanged in the airport as soon as you arrive.

Please send me a message if you need anything else. :)

Cheers, Joel

  • traders selling travellers fake goods, especially jewellery and gems

Ask your credit card provider how to prevent credit card fraud.

Cyber security

You may be at risk of cyber-based threats during overseas travel to any country. Digital identity theft is a growing concern. Your devices and personal data can be compromised, especially if you're connecting to Wi-Fi, using or connecting to shared or public computers, or to Bluetooth.

Social media can also be risky in destinations where there are social or political tensions or laws that may seem unreasonable by Australian standards. Travellers have been arrested for things they have said on social media. Don't comment on local or political events on your social media.

  • Cyber security when travelling overseas

Kidnapping can happen anywhere, anytime, including in destinations that are typically at lower risk.

The Australian Government's longstanding policy is that it doesn't make payments or concessions to kidnappers.

  • Kidnapping

Tours and adventure activities

Transport and tour operators don't always follow safety and maintenance standards. This includes adventure activities, such as water sports.

If you plan to do an  adventure activity :

  • keep in touch with friends and family
  • consult with your tour operator about disruptions to your travel plans
  • Sri Lankan Disaster Management Centre
  • Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System

Travel insurance

Ensure you have comprehensive  travel insurance .

Your policy needs to cover all overseas medical costs, including medical evacuation. The Australian Government won't pay for these costs.

If you can't afford travel insurance, you can't afford to travel. This applies to everyone, no matter how healthy and fit you are.

If you're not insured, you may have to pay many thousands of dollars up-front for medical care.

  • what activities and care your policy covers
  • that your insurance covers you for the whole time you'll be away

  • plan any vaccinations you need

Do this at least 8 weeks before you leave.

If you have immediate concerns for your welfare or the welfare of another Australian, call the 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre on +61 2 6261 3305 or contact your  nearest Australian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate  to discuss counselling hotlines and services available in your location.

Medications

Import delays may impact your ability to access some medicines.

Not all medication available over the counter or by prescription in Australia is available in other countries. Some may even be considered illegal or a controlled substance, even if prescribed by an Australian doctor.

If you plan to bring medication, check if it's legal in Sri Lanka. Take enough legal medicine for your trip. Consider bringing an extra supply in case your trip is unexpectedly extended.

Carry a copy of your prescription or a letter from your doctor stating:

  • what the medication is
  • your required dosage
  • that it's for personal use

Visas and border measures

Every country or territory decides who can enter or leave through its borders. For specific information about the evidence you'll need to enter a foreign destination, check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.

Entry and exit conditions can change. Sri Lanka has introduced  Digital Arrival & Departure Cards , which can be completed three days prior to travel.

You need a  Sri Lankan eVisa  to enter Sri Lanka.

Tourists can't obtain visas on arrival. You need a yellow fever vaccination certificate even if you've only transited through an affected country. This rule applies for the 9 days before you enter Sri Lanka. Babies under one year old are exempt.

Border authorities and airlines may request evidence of immunisations. All travellers should carry proof of vaccination status in English.

Some countries won't let you enter unless your passport is valid for 6 months after you plan to leave that country. This can apply even if you're just transiting or stopping over.

Some foreign governments and airlines apply the rule inconsistently. Travellers can receive conflicting advice from different sources.

You can end up stranded if your passport is not valid for more than 6 months.

The Australian Government does not set these rules. Check your passport's expiry date before you travel. If you're not sure it'll be valid for long enough, consider getting  a new passport .

Lost or stolen passport

Your passport is a valuable document. It's attractive to people who may try to use your identity to commit crimes.

Some people may try to trick you into giving them your passport. Always keep it in a safe place.

If your passport is lost or stolen, tell the Australian Government as soon as possible:

  • In Australia, contact the  Australian Passport Information Service .
  • If you're overseas, contact the nearest  Australian embassy or consulate .

Passport with 'X’ gender identifier

What is a travel money card?

A travel money card is a card you can use for secure and convenient payments and withdrawals overseas.

You can use a travel money card to tap and pay in stores and restaurants, with a wallet like Apple Pay, or to make ATM withdrawals so you'll always have a bit of cash in your pocket when you travel.

Although there are lots of different travel money cards on the market, all of which are unique, one similarity you'll spot is that the features and fees have always been optimised for international use. That might mean you get a better exchange rate compared to using your normal card overseas, or that you run into fewer fees for common international transactions like ATM withdrawals.

Travel money cards also offer distinct benefits when it comes to security. Your travel money card isn't linked to your United States Dollar everyday account, so even if you were unlucky and had your card stolen, your primary bank account remains secure.

Travel money vs prepaid card vs travel credit card

It's helpful to know that you'll be able to pick from several different types of travel cards, depending on your priorities and preferences. Travel cards commonly include:

  • Travel debit cards
  • Travel prepaid cards
  • Travel credit cards

They all have distinct benefits when you head off to Sri-Lanka or elsewhere in the world, but they do work a bit differently.

Travel debit and prepaid cards are usually linked to an online account, and may come from specialist digital providers - like the Wise card. These cards are usually flexible and cheap to use. You'll be able to manage your account and card through an app or on the web.

Travel credit cards are different and may suit different customer needs. As with any other credit card, you may need to pay an annual fee or interest and penalties depending on how you manage your account - but you could also earn extra rewards when spending in a foreign currency, or travel benefits like free insurance for example. Generally using a travel credit card can be more expensive compared to a debit or prepaid card - but it does let you spread out the costs of your travel across several months if you'd like to and don't mind paying interest to do so.

What is a prepaid travel money card best for?

Let's take a look at the advantages of using a prepaid travel money card for travellers going to Sri-Lanka. While each travel card is a little different, you'll usually find some or all of the following benefits:

  • Hold and exchange foreign currencies - allowing you to lock in exchange rates and set a travel budget before you leave
  • Convenient for spending in person and through mobile wallets like Apple Pay, as well as for cash withdrawals
  • You may find you get a better exchange rate compared to your bank - and you'll usually be able to avoid any foreign transaction fee, too
  • Travel cards are secure as they're not linked to your everyday USD account - and because you can make ATM withdrawals when you need to, you can also avoid carrying too much cash at once

Overall, travel cards offer flexible and low cost ways to avoid bank foreign transaction and international ATM fees, while accessing decent exchange rates.

How to choose the best travel card for Sri-Lanka

We've picked out 5 great travel cards available in the US - but there are also more options available, which can make choosing a daunting task. Some things to consider when picking a travel card for Sri-Lanka include:

  • What exchange rates does the card use? Choosing one with the mid-market rate or as close as possible to it is usually a smart plan
  • What fees are unavoidable? For example, ATM charges or top up fees for your preferred top up methods
  • Does the card support a good range of currencies? Getting a card which allows you to hold and spend in LKR can give you the most flexibility, but it's also a good idea to pick a card with lots of currency options, so you can use it again in future, too
  • Are there any other charges? Check in particular for foreign transaction fees, local ATM withdrawal fees, inactivity fees and account close fees

Ultimately the right card for you will depend on your specific needs and preferences.

What makes a good travel card for Sri-Lanka

The best travel debit card for Sri-Lanka really depends on your personal preferences and how you like to manage your money.

Overall, it pays to look for a card which lets you minimise fees and access favourable exchange rates - ideally the mid-market rate. While currency exchange rates do change all the time, the mid-market rate is a good benchmark to use as it’s the one available to banks when trading on wholesale markets. Getting this rate, with transparent conversion fees, makes it easier to compare costs and see exactly what you’re paying when you spend in LKR.

Other features and benefits to look out for include low ATM withdrawal fees, complimentary travel insurance, airport lounge access or emergency cash if your card is stolen. It’s also important to look into the security features of any travel card you might pick for Sri-Lanka. Look for a card which uses 2 factor authentication when accessing the account app, which allows you to set instant transaction notifications, and which has easy ways to freeze, unfreeze and cancel your card with your phone.

When you head off to Sri-Lanka you can expect to find you’ll be able to use your card a lot - but not always. Some merchants still prefer cash payments - so choosing a card which is easy to pay with, but which also has simple and low cost ways to make ATM withdrawals should mean you’re covered no matter what happens

Ways to pay in Sri-Lanka

Cash and card payments - including contactless, mobile wallet, debit, credit and prepaid card payments - are the most popular ways to pay globally.

In Sri-Lanka card payments are common in most situations. You’ll be able to make Chip and PIN or contactless payments or use your favourite mobile wallet like Apple Pay to tap and pay on the go. It’s still worth having a little cash on you just in case - and for the odd situations where cash is more convenient, such as when tipping or buying a small item in a market.

Which countries use LKR?

You’ll find that LKR can only be used in Sri-Lanka. If you don’t travel to Sri-Lanka frequently it’s worth thinking carefully about how much to exchange so you’re not left with extra foreign currency after your trip. Or pick a travel card from a provider like Wise or Revolut which lets you leave your money in USD and convert at the point of payment with no penalty.

What should you be aware of when travelling to Sri-Lanka

You’re sure to have a great time in Sri-Lanka - but whenever you’re travelling abroad it's worth putting in a little advance thought to make sure everything is organised and your trip goes smoothly. Here are a few things to think about:

1. Double check the latest entry requirements and visas - rules can change abruptly, so even if you’re been to Sri-Lanka before it’s worth looking up the most recent entry requirements so you don’t have any hassle on the border

2. Plan your currency exchange and payment methods - you can change USD to LKR before you travel to Sri-Lanka if you’d like to, but as card payments are common, and ATMs widely available, you can actually leave it until you arrive to get everything sorted as long as you have a travel money card. Top up your travel money card in USD and either exchange to LKR in advance or at the point of payment, and make ATM withdrawals whenever you need cash. Bear in mind that currency exchange at the airport will be expensive - so hold on until you reach Sri-Lanka to make an ATM withdrawal in LKR if you can.

3. Get clued up on any health or safety concerns - get travel insurance before you leave the US so you have peace of mind. It’s also worth reading up on any common scams or issues experienced by tourists. These tend to change over time, but may include things like rip off taxis or tour agents which don’t offer fair prices or adequate services.

Conclusion - Best travel cards for Sri-Lanka

Ultimately the best travel card for your trip to Sri-Lanka will depend on how you like to manage your money. Use this guide to get some insights into the most popular options out there, and to decide which may suit your specific needs.

I tried Sri Lanka’s brand new highland hiking trail – here’s why you should follow me

“Just here?” The tuktuk driver seems doubtful.

Why were these two foreigners abandoning his vehicle on the corner of a steep, single-track road by the rusting, rattling hulk of a derelict tea factory?

We pay the agreed price to convey us from Ohiya station down a largely broken, bumpy road and wave him goodbye. He sputters off, clearly thinking we’re mad.

But we are, according to the map we have downloaded, exactly where we want to be: at the starting point of stage 12 of the Pekoe Trail. And there is no one else here.

After a week of finding ourselves on the conveyor belt of Sri Lanka’s tourist hotspots , we had stepped off and away, pitching up in the small, scruffy hilltop town of Haputale with the beguiling prospect of walking some of Sri Lanka’s first long distance hiking trail.

The Pekoe Trail started as the hobby of Miguel Cuñat, a Spanish-born resident of Sri Lanka for over two decades. In between putting together high-end itineraries and guiding wealthy clients to the more exclusive parts of the island, he loved nothing more than escaping to the cooler uplands and seeking out places to hike.

Sri Lanka’s highlands are where, in the late 19th century, entrepreneurial Englishman with names like Taylor and Lipton took over from the beleaguered coffee farmers who had lost everything to coffee blight and started growing tea instead. Tea remains the crop that dominates this region still: low, tightly planted bushes, transforming the steep, rugged landscapes into a rolling sea of pillowy green.

The plantations, Cuñat realised, provided a network of already established routes, connecting the harvested crop with roads and railways. What if they could be linked together, creating one long trail? The area is already famed for the dramatically beautiful railway journey that links Kandy with Ella and the “little England” of Nuwara Eliya, but rather than watching this beguiling landscape slip serenely past a train window, would people take the chance to experience it in a slower, more immersive way if they could?

It was an idea which, if dwelt upon too long, would probably never have gone any further. The obstacles were many. Multiple landowners, both government and private, needed to agree for an official trail to cut through their land.

Sri Lanka’s rains between May and September and again in December, are often heavy enough to cause landslides that wash away large swathes of hillside, and always trigger a furious growth spurt in the already verdant vegetation. Who would be responsible for the constant maintenance the route would demand?

And even if the estate owners allowed the use of the tracks that ran through their plantations, there were still large areas that needed to be explored and possibly cleared to fulfil Miguel’s vision of linking one end of the highlands with the other.

But the idea had taken hold, and with the often tireless help of many local guides and expert machete-wielders, the trail started to emerge, bit by bit. It wove its way from the slopes south of Kandy, through Indiana Jones country ( The Temple of Doom features scenes filmed against the dramatic backdrop of the earliest part of the trail), following sandy tracks running through small communities, linking bustling market towns, bus routes and railway stations.

It climbed to breath-taking viewpoints, cut through forests, past shrines and temples, village cricket pitches, rice paddies, vegetable gardens and farms. And as the 185 mile (300km) route unfurled, Miguel realised that what was being created was more than a walk. It was a means to bring opportunity and economic benefit to people bypassed by tourism.

We follow our map back up the road, flanked by vivid spikes of purple flowers, stone walls and wide blue-green views over peaks and valleys. We pass the figures of tea pickers, sacks hanging down their backs from their foreheads, swift-fingered and sharp-eyed, moving methodically between the waist-high bushes.

A narrow path leads us away from the road into deeper countryside and from here we enter the fragrant, rustling shade of a eucalyptus plantation.

We follow the contour of the hill around the ruins of an abandoned village, plunge into the shadows cast by tight-knit lofty pines, planted, like the eucalyptus, to fuel the tea factories. A scramble over fallen trunks brings us to the plantation edge and below us curves the railway line we took earlier.

A series of hooting whistles announces the imminent arrival of the train and we wait to see it come into view, chuffing sweetly beneath us, its rust red carriages sweeping around the curve of the hillside and away.

Soon afterwards we are on that same railway track, giggling as we struggle to match our stride with the distance between sleepers, feeling like naughty children doing what we have firmly been told never to do. But railway tracks double as footpaths all over rural Sri Lanka, which is why trains obligingly make their approach known so far in advance.

We join locals walking from the station along the tracks towards their homes. A cheerful group of men clearing vegetation along the line with long-handled sickles assure us it is fine to walk through the tunnel ahead. As a couple of them are unconcernedly munching roti whilst squatting in the middle of the track, we take their word for it.

The latter part of the walk follows paths through tea estates. Hillsides tamed and terraced and so uniformly green, it was like looking at an installation by the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, who famously wrapped landscapes and landmark buildings in fabric. We walk alongside women emerging from the fields with bulging sacks on their backs to the weighing stations.

At just over 13 miles (21.5 km) this section of the trail is one of the longest. “I wanted to make it possible for people to complete each section in a morning, before it gets really hot,” explained Miguel. “And also to have time to do other things in a day, not just have to walk. But of course it is possible to walk more than one section in a day, if you want to.”

The following day we walk from our guesthouse to the forest on the edge of Haputale, and climb steadily via wide panoramas, soaring eagles and troops of macaques, to the tea-workers’ village of St Catherine, heralded by a hand-painted sign declaring “The Best View Comes After the Hardest Climb”. We add an extra climb by heading on to Lipton’s Seat where the Glaswegian, whose name is synonymous with tea to this day, would sit and survey his empire.

A Tuktuk bumps us back down the long road to Haputale. Sri Lanka’s ubiquitous three-wheelers make it very easy for walkers of the Pekoe Trail to base themselves in one place for a few days to walk a number of sections, without the need to carry luggage or move accommodation every day. Trains and Tuktuks and the helpful guidance of the owner of our guesthouse allow us to walk sections 12-15 – two short sections which we joined together – from Haputale. Section 15 brings us, via the iconic Ella Rock down into Ella, our new base, whilst our luggage travels by Tuktuk and meets us there.

Miguel’s hope that the trail could open up opportunity and bring prosperity to communities along it is, even in these very early days, starting to be realised. And it comes at a crucial time for Sri Lanka. Beneath the thin patina of warm smiles and welcome drinks is a country struggling to raise itself off its knees.

Tourism, which built steadily until 2018, crashed following the terrorist attacks on Easter Day 2019, and the pandemic which followed reduced numbers even further. The EU and USAID have recognised the potential of the Pekoe Trail and, as part of a tourism resilience programme, have helped fund the administrative process of making the trail official, training for guides and business start-ups such as homestays. Sections 1 and 2 are waymarked and officially open, but waymarked or not, the trail exists, testimony to one man’s brave and beautiful vision, his love of his adopted country and its people.

We walked 9 of the trail’s 22 sections. Each one had its own character, its own charms and challenges. We had days of blistering sunshine, followed by days of gusting winds and low cloud and drizzle that was not unlike being in the Brecon Beacons (with added leeches). We saw barking deer skulking in the shadows, heard shy hellos from children and sustained ourselves on coconuts, egg roti and stumpy sweet bananas.

The walk was an ever-changing mosaic of colour, sound and beauty. This is Sri Lanka as seen on foot – off the beaten track but on a trail of wonders.

Kate Humble travelled as a guest of Wild Frontiers , which offers a 15-day itinerary including walking sections of the Pekoe Trail from £2,559 per person, including transfers, some meals and accommodation, but excluding international flights.

The best time to walk the Pekoe Trail is between January and April and September to November. The terrain is varied and good hiking shoes or boots are recommended. Walkers should carry sunscreen, insect repellent, water and a hat. A light waterproof jacket might be advisable, as the weather can be changeable. Vegetation can be overgrown in some sections of the trail and you may encounter leeches, particularly when the trail is wet.

Waymarking of the trail is a work in progress. At the time of writing only the first two sections had been waymarked. Trail routes are available on the Wikiloc App, but approved guides are also listed on the Pekoe Trail website , as well as practical information and suggestions for accommodation.

Sri Lanka obtained the second highest number of votes from the region, and seventh highest overall, and will begin its three-year term in the council on January 1, 2025.

“As a member of the ECOSOC, Sri Lanka will contribute to the Council’s efforts and programmes, which include eradication of poverty, food security, financing for development, reform of the international financial architecture to better support vulnerable countries, climate justice, gender equality and women’s empowerment, rights of persons with disabilities, science and technology, and bridging the digital divide,” the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a media release.

Book oplevelser i Unawatuna

Nyd stranden i Unawatuna

Elefantsafari i Udawalawe Nationalpark

Udawalawe Nationalpark

Andre oplevelser i Ella

Markeder i massevis

Andre oplevelser i Kandy

Træ i Peradeniya Garden

Ture tilbage i historien

Oplev elefanterne i Minneriya Nationalpark
