Carnival cruise food: The ultimate guide to restaurants and dining on board

Lifestyle

On a Carnival cruise, food is always one of the highlights. From Guy Fieri burgers to fancy steaks at Fahrenheit 555, you'll find endless options to satisfy your hunger in a highly enjoyable fashion. In fact, there's often more to eat and explore than you could possibly have time for in a single sailing.

If you're planning your next cruise and want to know which Carnival restaurants to expect on board, you've come to the right place. While certain dining venues remain a standard across all ships — like the much-loved Lido Deck buffet — the options keep expanding with every new ship launch. Plus, older ships are constantly being refurbished and updated with new restaurants. That's why we put together this comprehensive list of Carnival cruise restaurants and where you can find them.

Consider this your ultimate guide to Carnival cruise food, with details about every restaurant in the fleet, as well as answers to the most commonly asked questions about dining on a Carnival cruise ship.

Carnival restaurants available fleetwide

Coffee bar or javablue cafe.

A la carte pricing; snacks

Black coffee and tea are free at the buffet and in the main dining room, but you'll want to come here for specialty coffee drinks like espresso or cold brew. You can also purchase milkshakes and baked goods when you need an extra pick-me-up (or grab free Danish pastries and croissants in the morning).

Dining room

carnival cruise miracle food

Included; breakfast and dinner

The main dining room serves a sit-down breakfast and the nightly three-course dinner that's included in your cruise fare. Even better, Carnival's chief culinary officer, Emeril Lagasse, is now behind many of the dining room's new menu items. On Carnival, the main dining room comes with less pretense than on many other cruise lines. In fact, it's not uncommon for your servers to break out in song and dance by the end of the night.

Don't miss other special dining experiences like the complimentary Seaday Brunch menu or the family-friendly Dr. Seuss-themed breakfast for an additional fee ($10 to $15 per adult; $8 to $10 per child), which includes meet-and-greets with characters.

Lido Marketplace

Included; breakfast, lunch and dinner

Carnival's buffet on the Lido Deck has all the staple stations to keep you fed from morning until night. Try the deli counter, barbecue spot, pasta bar or Asian noodle station. Don't miss the always-essential salad bar or pizza station. Finish up with soft serve ice cream, frozen yogurt or an enormous cake slice and other goodies from the dessert station.

Included; snacks

No cruise experience is complete without on-demand soft serve. Open on the Lido Deck until midnight, the Swirls station serves up frozen yogurt and soft serve ice cream in the classic flavors of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, or you can enjoy your own combo swirl. The best part is it's self-serve, so no one can judge you for how often you come back for another cone.

The Chef's Table

Fixed price; dinner

This exclusive multicourse dining experience hosted by the ship's master executive chef takes place in untraditional spaces like the galley or library to give you a behind-the-scenes VIP feel. (Some newer ships even have a dedicated Chef's Table dining room with a window into the galley.) You'll be part of a group of only 14 to 16 guests, and the evening kicks off with cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and a tour of the galley. The dinner menu itself changes based on what's in season or local to the port, but it always includes wine pairings and, of course, dessert.

24-hour room service

carnival cruise miracle food

A la carte; all-day dining

When hunger calls at odd hours of the night or you're craving a meal from the comfort of your balcony, you can access 24-hour room service on your Carnival cruise ship. Just pick up your cabin's phone and place your order. While room service is generally only available for a cost, Carnival does offer free continental breakfast delivery to your room from 6 to 10 a.m.

Pizza delivery

Fixed price; all-day dining

You can order pizza on the Carnival Hub app to wherever you are on the ship, any time of day, for a delivery fee of $5 per pie. Pro tip: Take a picture of yourself showing where you're located on board to help the pizza delivery staff find you.

Pizzeria del Capitano or Pizza Pirate

Included; lunch and dinner

The all-day pizza station is going to be your go-to option when you get back from a day at port and the lunch buffet is already closed or when you're hungry after a late night of partying. Choose from five prepared pizza options, ranging from classics like margherita and pepperoni to other delicious Italian favorites like funghi and prosciutto. Order a slice or get a whole pie delivered through the Carnival Hub app.

Carnival cruise food: Frequently asked questions

carnival cruise miracle food

How do seating times work in the main dining room?

Before sailing, you must choose your preferred dining format for the main dining room — either set dining times with assigned seating or a flexible option called Your Time Dining with open seating. If you prefer a preset dining time and a guaranteed table with the same server every night, you can choose early dining at 5:30 p.m. or late dining at 7:45 p.m.

With Your Time Dining, you can go to the main dining room anytime between 5:15 p.m. and 9 p.m. to be seated on a first-come, first-served basis. Just alert the dining room that you're coming on the Carnival Hub app so your table will be ready sooner. You can request a specific waiter, but more likely, you'll sit at a different table with a new waiter each evening. You might have to wait for a table at peak dinner times, but Carnival says the average wait time is usually less than 20 minutes, depending on your party size.

Either way, there's no need to make a reservation for the main dining room.

Do you need reservations for specialty dining restaurants?

Reservations are highly recommended for specialty restaurants, as these locations can book up in advance. You can make reservations online up to 48 hours before your cruise by visiting the "Manage My Booking/Cruise Manager" section of Carnival.com, at which time you'll also pay the cover charge for the restaurant.

Once you get on board, look for staff set up at booths to help you make specialty dining reservations. You can also call or visit the restaurant yourself to make a reservation, but seating times might be limited. Walk-ins are allowed but will get seated based on availability. If you don't make a reservation, be prepared for a wait or the possibility of being turned away if the restaurant is booked.

Can you enjoy unlimited food on your Carnival cruise?

It depends on where you eat! There are no limits on most of the included food options, and you can pretty much find free food on your cruise from the crack of dawn to late into the night. You can always eat as much as you want at the buffet in Lido Marketplace and other included food stations across the ship during their operating hours. In the main dining room, however, guests are limited to two free entrees (which, let's be honest, is still plenty!) before having to pay for additional entrees.

Is there a fee for room service?

Room service isn't free on Carnival anymore, except during breakfast. Instead, menu items are available to order a la carte. Complimentary continental breakfast can be delivered to your room between the hours of 6 and 10 a.m. For more details, check out our complete cruise ship room service guide .

Are kids menus available?

Most dining venues offer kids menus with plenty of safe options for picky eaters (think: chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, and spaghetti and meatballs). If you're dining at one of the specialty restaurants with a cover charge, there's a reduced fee for kids under 11.

Does Carnival still offer a Lobster Night?

Lobster is available for dinner nightly in the main dining room for a surcharge, but on cruise sailings of six nights or longer, Carnival offers one night per sailing (typically one of the formal nights) where a lobster tail is included as a complimentary entree option on the three-course menu. But don't expect to scarf down all the lobster you can eat. In line with Carnival's two-entree limit in the main dining room, guests now have to pay for any additional lobster past the first two entrees.

And let’s not forget the extra time you’ll have, since you won’t be waking up and spending most of the day at the office or anything like that. If those were some of your go-to excuses, we’re sorry, but we all know this is important. Why not treat yourself to some of our fitness classes — you might even have a little fun while you do something great for yourself!

Mini Golf

Deck: 11 Sports

Ah, imagine a perfect day out on the links, the golfer's zen of the ball, the hole and nothing in between but well-manicured fairway... plus one cactus, a treasure chest... and wait, is that a windmill in the way? Just who designed this course anyway? Whoever it was, they had one thing in mind — maximum fun for mini-golfers, big and small! That's precisely why you'll find a course on every Carnival ship, where you can hit the holes and take in everything you’d expect, like the sights and the sounds... plus the seagulls.

Jogging Track

Jogging Track

Jogging may not immediately come to mind when you think of things to do at sea, but it probably should. You don’t have to walk on water, you just have to get on a Carnival cruise. After all, if you’re going to jog, you’d be hard-pressed to find a place to do it with a more scenic view, or a more refreshing breeze — both of these are available in abundance when you go for an open-air jog on the upper-deck. Jogging tracks are available on all Carnival ships, and are even padded for long-distance comfort.

Sometimes you just need to get away… from all that vacation. We know — sitting at home, it’s hard to imagine that, but trust us it’s really, really nice to have a place to unwind from the day’s excitement. Escape to a world designed, from the ground up, for relaxation. Cloud 9 Spa staff are masters (or, maybe more like artists) trained in the craft of simply helping you chill. What’s their secret Massages, facials, body wraps, thermal suites and more plus, on certain ships, the amazing Hydrotherapy Pool — these are the tools of the trade. And the trade is ultimate relaxation.

BlueIguana Tequila Bar is the onboard spot to chill and enjoy a slushy tequila drink or an ice-cold Mexican cerveza. The menu offers up Mexican favorites, including several brands of tequila and a slew of Mexican brews.

Red Frog Rum Bar

Guests have told us we hit on something special with the cool Caribbean chill of the RedFrog Pub. We've taken the best parts and brought them poolside with the RedFrog Rum Bar, where the frog keeps the fun hopping day and night with all the island flava you know and love. Join the party at this poolside bar featuring a great selection of frog-approved Caribbean rum-based concoctions available by the glass or pitcher, plus plenty of Carnival’s signature private-label draft beer, ThirstyFrog Red. is the onboard spot to chill and enjoy a slushy tequila drink or an ice-cold Mexican cerveza. Food on Miracle

Cool Cruiser

My husband and I will be sailing on the Miracle in March and I'm a bit nervous with the new covid variant.  I'm a healthcare worker and while I'm not over the top and still trying to live life, I do want to be careful on this cruise.  My husband booked us one of the aft wrap around suites so we can just lounge around during the day without worrying too much about distancing etc....having said that we still want to have a good time.  We love low key lazy vacations so laying in the sun for the day when we are from the Pacific NW sounds lovely to us.  We still have to eat though...my question is what options are there on the Miracle besides the buffet.  We have traveled on Carnival many times and we are not picky with food.  We have always gone to the dining to be served by waiters for dinner (is that still happening_?) but done room service or buffet for breakfast and lunch (if not in port somewhere.  I'm not crazy about buffet style with the spike in covid cases so what other options are there?

They are still serving in the MDR.....in addition to the buffet...you can eat at Blue Iguana (burritos/tacos), the deli (sandwiches), Guy Burgers (burgers obviously), sushi ($) and of course the always 24hr pizza and ice cream.

PS...we too sail on the Miracle in March!

For our Alaskan cruise in August we had room 5466, wrap-around Vista Suite. You'll love all the room. All the eating venues are on the ship's website. We never went hungry.

Schoifmom

All eating venues are open.  I have always managed to cruise and avoid the buffet.  We will eat in the MDR for breakfast/brunch (breakfast on port days, brunch on sea days) and dinner.  For lunch, we normally hit up one of the quick-serve locations (deli, Guys, Blue Iguana, etc.).  It's easy to go the entire cruise and not eat in the buffet.

The normal options are still available for room service.

I have no fear of buffets but aside from one time when hubby went and got me fries to eat at the pool I  too have never eaten at a buffet on any cruise I have taken....I am a mom who serves food 40 some weeks a year so any chance I have to be served I take it!!!

Did you go on the Carnival site and actually look at the ship and dining options? Seems to be the first place I would look.

Yes I actually did but wasn't sure what was grab n go vs someone making you something and giving it to you or if there was still normal dining room service-not to mention what was really happening with covid protocols.   I always like to get other guests experiences which is why I posted the question.

We just booked last night...I'm excited but nervous about all the covid stuff but I'm determined not to let it stop me from having a good time.  I think this is our 8th cruise but it's been around 5 years I think since the last time!  Hoping the covid spike will have simmered down by then!  We are going 3/15-3/20...little getaway to celebrate our 50th birthdays!

Ah congrats!  I leave the following week...we sail on 3/24.....Personally I look at it like the cruise line takes way more precautions then when I visit Walmart or the grocery store...hopefully much of the current situation dies down before sail....

You can get food at the Deli, and pizza station. On the lido just off the pool area is Guys Burgers and Blu Iguana Burrito Bar. Our favorite for breakfast is sea day brunch and breakfast on port days both in the dining room. There is plenty of distancing space.

We just got off the Miracle over NYE. Let me assure you, food will NOT be an issue unless you are looking for 5-star dining (which the Steakhouse would meet that need)

In fact, we sailed the Oasis of the Seas in October, so we have a good comparison of food options and we thought the Miracle had BETTER food than the Oasis , hands down. No comparison.

Carnival had more food available more often we found. On the Oasis we constantly had trouble between meals finding "free" food options that weren't limited to a few relatively unappetizing sandwiches (always weird ones like egg salad, avacado/mushroom (I kid you not), and the decent Kimmelwick) or just Sorrentos. While Sorrentos was not bad at all, Carnival pizza is leaps better. I do LIKE the setup at Sorrento's much better vs the carnival "whole-pie" concept (just faster).  Another, at 3pm on the Oasis, ALL the lunch venues pretty much closed including the buffet, El loco Fresh and the Promenade Cafe. If I wanted a sandwich, I had to go down to the Promenade Cafe and choose from basically 1 of 3 sandwich options (which usually consisted of way too much bread and a few thin slices of meat) some cookies, maybe 1 or 2 pastries, and maybe some fruit (I will say that the fruit cups to-go were VERY nice). Or I could go over to Sorrentos and grab some pizza and some side options (which were usually not very good, but they were options). Other than that? No other options except PAY options like Johnny Rocket's, Room Service, or Playmaker's. Dinner was about the same, few options but the dining room, Cafe promenade, or the Solarium (the buffet was not open on our cruise, but this could be added into dinner now).  Now, PAY options were amazing on the Oasis, but we aren't foodies and just need the basics and we are content and I think this is where Royal does NOT do better. I will say I like the BREAKFAST options better on Royal, having the Park Cafe was SO amazing especially staying on deck 8, easy walk out to all kinds of continental options with a wonderful al-fresco dining. But all other options were worse.

On the Miracle? From 7am to 11pm there was ALWAYS a few "build to order" options and a variety of free options. Buffet hours were basically 7-12 (contintental then full), then lunch buffet until 3:30, then dinner from 530 to almost 10pm. Guy's Burger was open from usually 1145 to 615pm every day. Blue Iguana was open from 9am to 1130 for breakfast, then again from about 1145 to 330 for lunch. The DELI was open basically from early morning until 11pm every day, and this was my usual go-to spot for sandwiches (made-to-order and however/how much I wanted). Pizza pirate available ALL day (even Sorrento's closed for a few hours at night). Bonsai sushi express for some really decent sushi (added cost, but cheap $5). Carnival even opens the buffet again late at night for some additional snackage.

I gained more weight from the Miracle cruise than I did on the Oasis.  We loved the Oasis for almost everything else (entertainment, ship) but they REALLY need to step up their "casual"/included food options as they have the setup to make it amazing, but they just don't commit.

Thanks

I agree, we were on Miracle in October, and I thought the food options were great (just like before the pandemic).  Except the desserts, I always found the cakes to be dry and tasteless, but that's okay, the less desserts I eat, the better!

My wife is a nurse and we have our 2nd cruise in February on Miracle.  If you are worried about buffets, bring some nylon or latex gloves to use.  The only grab and go options on Miracle are Blue Iguana(salsa bar is serve yourself), Guys Burgers(toppings bar is serve yourself), the Deli, and pizza.  Rest is buffet style unless you go to the dining room.

Just got off the Carnival Miracle March 6 (14 day Hawaii).

Fish in the dining room was good to great every time I ordered it, it's your best bet in the dining room.  Most everything else was at least OK with a few exceptions.  There was a chicken liver appetizer I had that was inedible (and I like chicken liver).  Prime Rib was good and we had a Carnival 50th birthday dinner which included the Beef Wellington which was a nice surprise.  My son and his wife ordered the Sushi Ship for Two and said it was good.  Overall dining room food was not as good as we've had in the past.  My wife and I each ordered the Surf & Turf from the Steakhouse Selections and it was excellent.

The pizza was good.  Guys, Chopsticks (at the buffet), the Deli and Blue Iguana (for the most part) were good.  I did have a steak burrito once from Blue Iguana that was very chewy.

Some really bad things: Biscuits at breakfast (whether at the buffet or in the dining room) were rock hard.  The everyday steak option in the dining room was not good. I ordered it the first night and it tasted like a $1.99 Vegas casino steak (chewy and gross).  The salmon benedict at the buffet was gross too.

Service was overall as good if not better than ever. Georgia is a fantastic Cruise Director.

firefly333

Pretty much my experiences except I am not a fish person I guess. Surf and turf excellent. I had blt sandwiches and what was inside was good, the bread was hard as a rock like your biscuits. I thought the bread was stale. The new steak was not edible.

Pizza turned into my new favorite lol. Guys didnt seem as good but maybe it's me. I had a lot of dinners in buffet or pay options and was fine. I was disappointed overall in the food. Not as good as I remembered except pay options.

staceyglow

I am on the Miracle right now. I found the biscuits to be just fine. Steak and eggs at Seaday Brunch was good. Highly recommend the brisket, the spareribs, and the short ribs if you are a carnevore.

Yeah, we try to utilize the specialty restaurants whenever possible.  Miracle only has he steakhouse but we would go at least 2 or 3 times for a 7 night cruise.  I've always like the Pizza, Deli and Seaday Brunch but we'll see post covid what happened to everything..lol The dining room has never been our favorite and it's definitely not food or ambiance worth getting all dressed up for when they call it elegant night.

I'm glad your biscuits are good.  Keep in mind I was on for 14 days (with 5 consecutive sea days going to our first port, followed by four more coming back). They may have gotten worse over time.

I hope you enjoyed your cruise. Overall, I loved mine.  But I'll never do a 14 day cruise again. I missed my dogs too much.

Carnival cruise food: The ultimate guide to restaurants and dining on board

O n a Carnival cruise, food is always one of the highlights.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Dining room

Blueiguana cantina.

Included; breakfast and lunch

This casual poolside spot serves up Mexican favorites like tacos and burritos with fillings including chipotle chicken, roast pork and battered fish. Order your tacos or burrito to your liking, then head to the salsa bar to add all your favorite toppings. In the morning, you can order breakfast burritos or huevos rancheros as an alternative to the typical Lido buffet breakfast.

On Carnival Jubilee , Cucina Del Capitano is free for the whole sailing. On Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras, your first meal is included, with additional visits at a cost of $8 per person. The other ships with this venue currently charge a fixed price of $24 per adult.

Guy's Burger Joint

Included; lunch

Carnival's poolside burger joint was dreamt up by Food Network star Guy Fieri to feel like the kind of roadside burger shack you'd see on one of his episodes of "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives." Don't underestimate these simple smashburgers — they pack a ton of flavor.

Here, you can find everything chicken — chicken sandwiches, crispy chicken strips and fried chicken baskets (even chicken biscuits at breakfast!) — plus essential sides like potato salad and jalapeno slaw.

Bonsai Teppanyaki

Fixed price; lunch and dinner

This Japanese hibachi-style restaurant is part meal and part performance, as your chef prepares your lunch or dinner at the griddle-top table in front of you. A modern Chinese-Mexican fusion concept, Chibang! is a specialty restaurant without the specialty prices. Emeril's Bistro

Emeril's Bistro 1937 on Carnival Celebration also spotlights rotating international dishes daily in addition to these Nawlins favorites.

Carnival cruise food: Frequently asked questions

How do seating times work in the main dining room.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

carnival cruise miracle food

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

carnival cruise miracle food

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

carnival cruise miracle food

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Volga River Cruises in Russia

Volga river cruising in Russia places you in another time. The longest and largest river in Europe stretches from Ivan the Terrible to Catherine the Great. Today, live along the central artery of Russia looks like it always has - the villages, the churches, the people, just like an old painting you have seen in a gallery.

The Volga flows through central Russia into the Caspian Sea and is often called the national river of Russia. 11 of the 20 largest cities of the country, including the capital Moscow, are in Volga's watershed. Some of the world's largest reservoirs can be found along the river, which has a symbolic meaning in Russian culture, referred to as Mother Volga (Volga Matushka) in Russian folklore and literature.

Explore the land of the Tsars while sailing down the historic Volga river, typically between Moscow and St Petersburg , the traditional homeports (of embarkation and debarkation). Tour landmarks are the Red Square and Kremlin in Moscow, the Hermitage and Catherine Palace in St Petersburg.

Russian River Cruises - CruiseMapper

Once unthinkable as a cruise vacation destination, Russia is today more accessible than ever, with stops along its largest European lakes and rivers. For river travel lovers accustomed to European itineraries, the Russian experience will be quite different. Russia has a special feel of uniquely designed riverboats. Built to handle larger lakes (Lake Ladoga for example, is the largest European freshwater body of water), these vessels usually feature larger size and capacity (up to six decks), deeper draft, and most of them are refurbished instead of being newbuild.

The itineraries offered are activity-intensive in Moscow and St Petersburg, with long periods of cruising and less ashore time in the middle. Smaller "Golden Ring" cities (so named due to their historic significance) are full of icon-riddled monasteries and Orthodox churches. Most cruise lines hire local experts and fill the days of sailing along the river with lectures on country's history, cooking demonstrations and language lessons.

Most of the tours offered by the companies sailing along Volga River are identical, so customers choosing between the different itineraries should look at how the river ships spend the time within Moscow and St. Petersburg. Some lines have their guests stay onboard, which can be as far as 1 hour out of both cities. Others put their clients up at hotels near the center of the city, with several meals at customer's expense.

Compared with other river routes, Russia features a short season, between early May and late October, with high season in June (known as White Nights because of the endless daylight), July and August. Even if the weather is chilly, there are some advantages to sailing early or late: you'll beat the crowds which can make a visit to the Hermitage a bear. Most Russian museums lack air-conditioning, and while the climate is generally temperate, in the summer Moscow often experiences high humidity heat waves.

Remember to think about your Russian visa at least 2 months before your voyage, to have enough time to fill out the paperwork, including a lengthy online application. And don't forget that the Russian language uses the Cyrillic alphabet. Even in the cities, you'll rarely find signs in English, so learning some letters and a few phrases will help you get around.

Doninturflot-Orthodox Cruise Company

Orthodox Cruise Company operates a fleet of USSR-design large river ships and serves mainly foreign tourists. The parent company Doninturflot (established in 1992) is the shipowner and manages the fleet.

  • Doninturflot started operations with the ships MS Maxim Litvinov, MS Mikhail Sholokhov and MS Sergei Dyagilev.
  • Since 2002, Docturflot charters Akademik Glushkov (currently MS Igor Stravinsky) owned by OOO Rosflotinvest.
  • In 2004 was acquired MS Anton Chekhov from Yenisei River Shipping Company (Russia).
  • In 2006 were acquired MS Peter Tchaikovsky and MS Ivan Bunin from the Moscow-based cruise shipping company "Passenger Port".
  • In 2008 was bought MS General Lavrinenkov from "Ukrrechflot" (Ukraine).
  • In 2011 was bought MS Marshal Koshevoy (from Ukrrichflot, Ukraine) but in April 2013 the ship was sold to Viking Cruises (now operates as Viking Akun ).
  • In 2016, was purchased MS Tikhi Don from the UK-based Grand Circle Travel company. In 2017, the ship started operations for Orthodox Cruise Company serving international tourists.

Also offered are itineraries Moscow-Volgograd and Moscow-Rostov, roundtrips from Kiev, and even grand voyages connecting two seas - Baltic and Black. Also offered are themed cruises - especially on food and music, with live performances by grand orchestras and choirs.

Imperial River Cruises Russia has an exclusive partnership with "Orthodox Cruise Company" - one of Russia's largest tour operators. As their names suggest, both companies target mainly foreign tourists - booking in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia. Ships' capacity varies between 180-250 passengers. Russian cruise ships

Currently, in Russia is operated a huge fleet of over 200 river cruise ships. All these vessels were built during the USSR (Soviet Union) times, roughly in the period between 1950-1990. Depending on class and series, these boats differ in terms of size, equipment (different engine designs), passenger capacity, onboard facilities and venues, cabins (types and number). Amenities additionally differ by shipowner (cruise company).

Russian river cruise ship

All these old-design Russian ships were completely refurbished and rebuilt for their new shipowners, Some of these ships are operated (via partnerships or under charter) also by foreign companies (like Viking, CroisiEurope, Uniworld, AMAwaterways, Grand Circle, Nicko). During their multi-million-dollar drydock refits, vessels passenger capacities were considerably reduced to improve travel comfort and safety.

Most boats are of the following classes:

  • "Rossiya" (Project 785, 36 vessels built 1952-1958)
  • "Baykal" (Project 646, 15 units built 1953-1956)
  • "Rodina" (Project 588, 49 vessels built 1954-1961)
  • "Oktyabrskaya Revolyutsiya" (Project 26-37, 14 units built 1957-1962)
  • "Dunay" (Project 305, 47 vessels built between 1959-1964)
  • "Kuybyshev" (Project OL400, 9 units built 1975-1983)
  • "Vladimir Ilyich" (Project 301, 22 vessels built between 1975-1983)
  • "Dmitri Furmanov" (Project 302, 27 vessels built between 1983-1991)

Regardless of their age, all these motor ships undergo regular drydock refurbishments , machinery and safety checks, scheduled repairs (including annual surveys). Drydocks are every 5 years and include repairs, hull inspection, propulsion-steering inspection, general maintenance works.

Each ship is equipped with life-saving appliances (lifeboats and rafts) in amounts exceeding the boat's max passenger and crew capacity. Each cabin is equipped with lifejackets with illustrated instructions in several languages. All ships are equipped with modern fire-fighting systems. Crew and staff are experienced and highly professional certified employees.

Here were exiled the Ivan Terrible’s 7th wife and her son Tsarevich Dmitry. Soon after, Tsarevich was mysteriously murdered here. Soon after, a dedicated to this event church ("Church of St. Demetrius on the Blood") was erected. Within the Uglich Kremlin walls is the town's oldest building - "Prince’s Palace". Among the attractions are the St Ipathy monastery, an open-air museum (traditional wooden architecture- izbas, mills, churches are gathered in one place).
  • Kizhi is famous the whole world over. It has become the symbol of the grandeur of unique Russian culture. Visiting the Kizhi Islands gives a great chance to appreciate the enchanting medieval atmosphere and get acquainted with the customs and free spirit of men living in a spacious area with a rigorous climate

In the 19th century, Nizhniy became the trade center of the whole state as it was the place of the biggest fair in the Russian Empire. A proverb of that time says: "Moscow is the heart of Russia, St. Petersburg is its head, and Nizhniy Novgorod - its pocketbook". The city was renamed "Gorky" in Soviet times, in honor of the writer Maxim Gorky, born there. Until 1990, Nizhniy Novgorod was “closed” to foreigners as USSR protected its military secrets. Nizhniy Novgorod is included in the UNESCO list of 100 cities constituting world cultural and historical value.
