When the Pine Needles Fall by Katsi'tsakwas Ellen Gabriel, with Sean Carleton

A book exploring gabriel, the kanien’kehá:ka spokesperson's experience during the siege of kanehsatà:ke and ka, social sharing.

A green book cover shows orange pine needles.

There have been many things written about Canada's violent siege of Kanehsatà:ke and Kahnawà:ke in the summer of 1990, but  When the Pine Needles Fall: Indigenous Acts of Resistance  is the first book from the perspective of Katsi'tsakwas Ellen Gabriel, who was the Kanien'kehá:ka (Mohawk) spokesperson during the siege.  When the Pine Needles Fall ,  written in a conversational style by Gabriel with historian Sean Carleton, offers an intimate look at Gabriel's life leading up to the 1990 siege, her experiences as spokesperson for her community, and her work since then as an Indigenous land defender, human rights activist, and feminist leader.

More than just the memoir of an extraordinary individual,  When the Pine Needles Fall  offers insight into Indigenous language, history, and philosophy, reflections on our relationship with the land, and calls to action against both colonialism and capitalism as we face the climate crisis. Gabriel's hopes for a decolonial future make clear why protecting Indigenous homelands is vital not only for the survival of Indigenous peoples, but for all who live on this planet. Michigan high school football conference picks: KLAA, LVC, WWAC, Charter, independents

carleton university tours

The Free Press begins its  Michigan high school football  conference previews with the kickoff of the 2024 season Thursday.

Below are predicted division order of finish for each conference via a coaches poll, plus the games to watch and players to know for the  2024 MHSAA football season .

This season looks a little different from a competition standpoint, with 56 teams changing divisions (1-8) from last season .

Here is part 1, breaking down the following leagues: KLAA, LVC, WWAC, Huron, Southeastern, Charter School, Independent; and the grouping of independents. All other conferences will be included in part 2, publishing Thursday morning.

Kensington Lakes Activities Association football predictions

East division.

Predicted finish: 1. Belleville; 2. Livonia Franklin; 3. Dearborn Fordson; 4. Dearborn; 5. Livonia Churchill; 6. Westland John Glenn; 7. Livonia Stevenson; 8. Wayne Memorial.

Why Belleville? Despite being stunned in last year’s Division 1 championship game by Southfield A&T (36-32), the Tigers are poised to win their third title in four years with the return of LSU quarterback commit Bryce Underwood , who has a bevy of playmakers around him in U-D Jesuit transfer Elijah Dotson (Pitt), Adrian Walker (Miami of Ohio), Antwon Thomas (Miami of Ohio) and Andre Thomas (Central Michigan). The offensive line will be anchored by 6-foot-4, 290-pound Trezelle Jenkins, while the defense is solid led by rush end Rashad Jones (Purdue), interior lineman Lamar Fairfax (Ohio) and safety Desmon Yharbrough (Miami of Ohio). Franklin, led by lineman Julian Castillo and running back/linebacker Bobby Pittenger, lost only four starters to graduation, while Fordson and Dearborn look to have bounce-back seasons. New coaches in the division include Milton Jones (John Glenn) and Jason Lamar (Wayne).

BIG PREVIEW: Bryce Underwood, nation's top QB, ready to lead Belleville on its 'revenge tour'

West Division

Predicted finish: 1. Northville; 2. Brighton; 3. Howell; 4. Hartland; 5. Novi; 6. Canton; 7. Plymouth; 8. Salem.

Why Northville? The Mustangs, who finished 10-2 a year ago, are coming off both a division and district championship, and were given the nod by the West coaches over Brighton. Second-year Northville coach Brent Luplow lost a chunk of key players to graduation, but returns five starters on offense and three on defense led by senior wide receiver/defensive back Colin Charles, who has Football Bowl Subdivision interest, along with senior defensive back/wide receiver Drew Rankin. Seniors Adam Travers and Hassan El-Zayat anchor the offensive line. There’s depth at running back but a battle for the No. 1 quarterback job. Brighton, which returns six starters on defense and six on offense, could challenge after going 5-5 in 2023. The Bulldogs will get a boost from Ann Arbor Huron transfer quarterback Lawrence Wells (CMU), while the defensive line is anchored by Army commit Jaden Rogers. Howell, led by defensive lineman Bobby Kanka (Michigan), could prove to be a spoiler. Plymouth looks to be improved led by 6-7, 290-pound offensive lineman Lucas Barnes (Miami of Ohio). Both Novi and Hartland made the playoffs a year ago. Canton will have its third head coach in three years with former Stevenson assistant Eric Newton.

Top players: Belleville QB Bryce Underwood (LSU) , DB/WR Elijah Dotson (Pitt), ATH Adrian Walker (Miami of Ohio); Franklin OL/DL Julian Castillo, RB/LB Bobby Pittenger; Fordson OL/DL Ali Hoballah, LB Ali Alziyadi; Dearborn LB/TE Mahdi Sabbah, WR/DB Hussein Hamie; Churchill TE/LB Lucas Beckham, SB/CB Emanuel Williams; John Glenn LB/TE Jermaine Gumbs, RB/CB Ethan Moore; Stevenson QB Nathan Peterson, LB Trevor Bennett; Wayne OG/C; Thomas Schroeder, RB Jordan Garner; Northville WR/DB Colin Charles, DB/WR Drew Rankin; Brighton, QB Lawrence Wells, DL Jaden Rogers (Army); Howell DL/OL Bobby Kanka (Michigan), DB/RB; Aiden Horvath; Hartland WR/LB Connor Renaud, DL/OL Ryan Buback; Novi QB/DB Johnny Aurillia, OT Gavin Przbyla; Canton RB Alex Guadagni, OG/DL Kayden Mullins; Plymouth OL Lucas Barnes (Miami of Ohio), HB/LB Cam Short; Salem RB Aiden Moore, WR/DB Rocco Spica.

Top games: Brighton will play at Saline on Friday in an early season nonconference test, while Northville entertains Lake Orion. In the Wayne State Xenith Kickoff Classic on Saturday, Belleville faces Clarkston, while another entertaining first game is Dexter at Franklin. Other key divisional matchups to watch include Brighton at Northville (Sept. 13), Franklin at Belleville (Sept. 27), Fordson at Belleville (Oct. 18) and the annual Baseline Jug game on Oct. 18 (Novi at Northville). The KLAA championship will be played in the final week of the regular season Oct. 25 with the East Division winner hosting.

Lakes Valley Conference football predictions

Predicted finish: 1. Walled Lake Western; 2. Waterford Mott; 3. White Lake Lakeland; 4. Milford; 5. South Lyon; 6. South Lyon East; 7. Waterford Kettering; 8. Walled Lake Northern; 9. Walled Lake Central.

Why Walled Lake Western? The defending champion Warriors return a veteran group, including seven starters on defense and five on offense from a squad that finished 10-2 and won a Division 3 district championship. Led by offensive lineman and three-year starting linebacker/offensive lineman Shane Rachner, Western is strong up front with good special teams. Coach Kory Cioroch said depth could be a factor, so the Warriors need to stay healthy. The biggest challenge will come in the opener against Waterford Mott (10-3), which made a run to the D-2 semifinals a year ago, but lost do-it-all All-State quarterback Kalieb Osborne (Toledo) to graduation. Another team to watch is Lakeland, which will return six starters on offense, but the defense must replace eight starters. Milford was a playoff team, and both South Lyon East and South Lyon are expected to be improved. New coaches in the conference include Jeff Penrod (Central), Mark Brimmer (Northern) and Brian Barnes (Kettering).

Top players: Western OL Liam Vaughn (Western Michigan), LB/RB Troy Temple (Lafayette), DB/WR Lucas Price (Yale); RB/DB Donovan Triplett; Mott TE/DE;SS Maximus Jansenvanvuren, WR/QB Geno Seets, OL/DL Noah Jimenez; Milford WR/DB Landon Murray, TE/LB Ike Stufft, RB/LB Tanner Petru; Lakeland RB/DB Trevor Tschudin, QB Carter Travis, DE/OL Landon Gacki; South Lyon East QB Dominic Giovannini, RB/DB A.J. Morgan LB/TE Carter Hamilton; South Lyon QB/LB Brady Shields, OG/DT Declan Scheloske, TE/LB Johnny Michaels; Northern LB/RB Jackson Ferguson, QB Alex Definis, DB/TE Landon Long; Kettering OL/DL John Regan, DB/WR Kaden Robinson, WR/DB Ryan Pacifico; Central RB/LB Corey Wahls, OL Dylan Akers, RB/DB Kayin Glass.

Top games: Perhaps the biggest showdown of the season happens in Week 1 on Friday, when defending champion Western travels to Mott, a D-2 state semifinalist from a year ago. Western also has a huge test Oct. 18 playing at D-3 runner-up Mason. It’s a rematch from last year where the Warriors suffered their lone regular season loss, 30-7. Mason also defeated Western in the regional final, 44-41, in OT. Other key games on Oct. 25 feature Lakeland at Milford and South Lyon at South Lyon East.

MHSAA FOOTBALL: Mick McCabe's top 10 teams for 2024 season

Western Wayne Athletic Conference football predictions

Predicted finish: 1. Redford Union; 2 Romulus; 3. Dearborn Heights Crestwood; 4. Redford Thurston; 5. Dearborn Heights Robichaud; 6. Garden City; 7. Melvindale; 8. Dearborn Heights Annapolis.

Why Redford Union? The Panthers have won three straight conference titles and 28 straight WWAC games under coach Ian Iler dating back to a forfeit loss during the COVID-19 season of 2020. Brandon Johnson and Julian Liddell will share the QB duties, while Devin Illard will help anchor the defensive line. With the Panthers, everything starts up front with the development of the offensive and defensive lines which will be battle tested early.  Romulus could be a sleeper and contend if they get the blocking up front. There are three new coaches in the conference including Mike Grucz (Crestwood), James Hill (Melvindale) and Ellis Slaughter (Annapolis). Grucz was elevated from the Chargers’ JV staff, while Hill, a former assistant at his alma mater Livonia Clarenceville, played at Wayne State. Ellis coached 21 seasons at Melvindale, including a one-year stint as head coach (2010) and most recently Riverview Gabriel Richard as an assistant for 11 years.

Top players: Redford Union WR/DB Jamel Belcher, OT Amere Jenkins, K/P/TE Kaemon Tijerina; Romulus WR/DB Mylek Lee, WR/DB Jamier Sullivan; Crestwood OL/DL Hashem Saleh, DE-FB-TB Tristen Vigneux; Thurston WR/DB Nicholas Warren, DT/OL Hector Barajas, DB/WR Bryce Gilmore; Robichaud QB Maurice Smith, OL/DL Elijah Ellis; Garden City DE/OT Ali Ahmad, Nick Emond, LB/TE; WR/CB Achillis Gill; Annapolis QB/LB Robert Armstrong, RB/CB Leeroy Coleman; Melvindale WR/DE Dazair McCrimon, QB Anthony White.

Top games: RU will be tested early opening the season Aug. 30 at defensive Division 5 state champion Harper Woods. Other big games for the Panthers include Robichaud (Sept. 20 at home), rival Thurston (Sept. 28 at home) and Allen Park (Oct. 25 away). Thurston opens its season Aug. 29 at Detroit Mumford, which features alleged Michigan sign stealer Connor Stalions, the Mustangs’ new defensive coordinator. Another key early matchup is Aug. 29 with Robichaud at Detroit Communication & Media Arts.

Charter School Conference football predictions

Gold division.

Predicted finish: 1. Warren Michigan Collegiate; 2. Romulus Summit Academy North; 3. Detroit Edison; 4. Ecorse; 5. Detroit Voyageur; 6. Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy; 7. Detroit University Prep Science & Math; 8. Detroit University Prep.

Why Michigan Collegiate? The Cougars are coming off another outstanding season after going 10-1 and winning the Gold Division before being ousted by Almont in the Division 6 district final, 40-38, in overtime. Coach John Guth has another outstanding team led by Saginaw Valley State commits Caleb Moore and Jacob Moore, both of whom will man the backfield at the QB and RB positions, respectively. They are complemented by senior wide receiver and defensive back Damarion Johnson.  Newcomers to the Gold Division include Detroit University Prep, Detroit University Prep Science & Math and Ecorse, all formerly with the Michigan Metro Athletic Conference. New coaches include Marlon Baker (Chandler Park), Al Demps (University Prep) and Andre Harlan (Science & Math).

Top players: Michigan Collegiate RB/CB Jacob Moore, QB/LB Caleb Moore, TE/LB Maurice Pope; Summit WR/DB Desmond Murphy, DE Gabe German, LB/FB Donnavan Ewing, Jr.; Edison, WR/DB Donovan Lyons, OL/DL Max Baker, WR/DB Kayden Upshaw; Voyageur LB/RB Amare Smith, DL/OL Norman Bearden Jr., RB/DB Terrell Goodwin; Ecorse WR/DB John Hazard Williams, QB Jamarie Moore, RB Diondre Johnson; Chandler Park CB Lionel Thompson, LB/RB Chris Howard, RB Dondreel McFarland, WR/DB Dojon Parker; Science & Math DT/OL Keon King, LB/OL Brandon Looney, QB/DB DeMarezi Swisher, DB/RB D’Kayne Blue; University Prep QB/DB Antonio Williams, RB/LB Marvell Ross.

Top games: An early season Gold Division showdown on Sept. 6 features Michigan Collegiate at Edison, which is coming off a district title. Collegiate also visits playoff teams Summit Academy North (Sept. 13) and Ecorse (Sept. 20). On Sept. 27, Ecorse goes to Summit, while Voyageur goes to Edison. Summit travels Oct. 12 to face Michigan Collegiate. Collegiate also has road games with Voyageur (Oct. 5) and Chandler Park (Oct. 18). On Oct. 19, the UPrep Classic features University Prep at Science & Math.

Silver Division

*Note: Only two coaches responded to our requests for insights

Prediction finish: Detroit Old Redford is the Silver division defending champ and returns the entire offensive line and QB, with 15 seniors to be favorites to win the league. Led by returning 3-year starters OL/DL Cortez MiddleBrooks (6-2, 290), DB Marlow Bulley and WR/LB J’Shawn Williams, plus WR/DB Kason Mayes (1200-plus yds rushing, 19 TDs).

Cornerstone Lincoln-King joins the league after competing last season as an independent. Three top seniors are: QB Aerion Fields, RB Saron Beeman and DL Christopher Jones. The roster includes 13 freshmen.

Michigan Independent League football predictions

Predicted finish: 1. Whitmore Lake; 2. Rochester Hills; 3. Lutheran Northwest; 4. Sterling Heights Parkway Christian; 5. Lutheran Westland.

Why Whitmore Lake: The potential league standings finish are a complete flip flop from last year’s coaches’ poll, but that can easily happen in a very small league with only five teams. Whitmore Lake returns no less than four all-conference players from last year, and co-ops with Charyl Stockwell Academy, making them a Division 5 team. However, Lutheran Westland returns 15 hungry seniors. In truth, it’s a toss-up.

Top players: Whitmore Lake 4 th -year returning starter RB/SS Donovan Fox (21 TDs), TE/LB Isaac Fair, TE/DE Teddy Gottbreht, RB/DE Joshua Militello; Lutheran Northwest OG/DT Aiden Spiehs, WR/DT Brock Carpenter, OG/DT Derek Friedeman (6-0, 250 pounds), FB/LB Ben Cairns; Parkway Christian QB/LB Julian Montano, WR/DB Nathaniel Harrison, soph. RB/LB Zaheem Cannon, junior OL/DL Jack Morrish; Westland QB Brandon Sholack, WR/S Aiden Sexton, Micah Lavigne, OL/DL Morgan Miller and RB/DB Keonte Hokes.

Top games: In a league this small, every game is critical to win, so a lot more is on the line each week than normal.

Huron League football predictions

Predicted order: 1. Riverview; 2. Carleton Airport; 3. Flat Rock; 4. New Boston Huron; 5. Monroe St. Mary Catholic; 6. Grosse Ile; 7. Milan; 8. Monroe Jefferson. Why Riverview : The Pirates haven’t lost fewer than three games in a season since 2016, and they should once again be the team to beat, capable of making a deep playoff run. Senior RB/DB Ian Adams was the team’s overall MVP last season, while senior RB Nathan Pinkava was the team’s offensive MVP. Those two will form a dynamic tandem in the backfield. Junior OL/DL Braedyn Evans is entering his third year as a starter, while senior QB Lucas Thompson is an experienced signal-caller.

Top games : Carleton Airport travels to Riverview in Week 2 of the season Sept. 6 in a battle between the teams that shared the league title last year. Riverview’s visit to Flat Rock on Sept. 27 should also go a long way in determining the league champ.

Players to watch : Riverview RB/DB Ian Adams, LB/RB Nathan Pinkava, OL/DL Braedyn Evans; Carleton Airport RB/LB Zak Vanbuskirk, OL/LB Isaac Kemp; Flat Rock QB Graham Junge, RB//DB Jacob Hagan, WR/DB Adam Szalay; Grosse Ile QB Tanner Symons; Monroe St. Mary Catholic RB Drew Harris; New Boston Huron WR//DB Ryan Anderson.

Southeastern League football predictions

Red division.

Predicted finish: 1. Dexter; 2. Saline; 3. Temperance Bedford; 4. Monroe; 5. Ann Arbor Huron; 6. Ann Arbor Pioneer; 7. Ann Arbor Skyline; 8. Ypsilanti Lincoln

Why Dexter: The Dreadnaughts might be a junior-laden team, but they have the talent to be ahead of schedule and compete for a league title, and possibly more. Senior RB Ronny Johnson (Northwestern) and senior OL Cam Clark (Wisconsin) have both committed to Big Ten programs, junior QB Cooper Arnedt threw for more than 2,000 yards last year, junior LB Nathan Gersh is entering his third year of varsity, while sophomore TE/DE Holden Niemi is one of the state’s top underclassmen.

Blue Division

Predicted finish: 1. Chelsea; 2. Adrian; 3. Tecumseh; 4. Jackson; 5. Pinckney; 6. Ypsilanti.

Why Chelsea: The Bulldogs are coming off a 9-2 season last year and over the offseason made a huge move with the hiring of Noel Dean as their new coach. Dean led Lowell to three state championships before moving on to take a job in Georgia. After three years there, he is back in Michigan and heads up a tradition-rich Chelsea program. Senior LB Luke Webster, senior DB Sam Borcherding, senior OL/DL Kyle Jahr, senior OL/TE Oliver Kuboushek and senior DL Indy Hurst will be among the key players for Chelsea.

Top games: It won’t take long for the league title race in the Red to take shape, as Saline will visit Dexter on Sept. 6. It will be the first of back-to-back challenging league games for Dexter, which will play at Bedford the following week. Dexter will also close the season against Chelsea, which will have a key league contest at Adrian on Sept. 27.

Players to watch: Dexter TE//DE Holden Niemi, RB Ronny Johnson, OT Cam Clark, QB Cooper Arnedt; Saline OL/DL Michael Reder, TE/DE Lincoln Keyes; Monroe LB/TE Tanner Collett, LB/RB Jax Jones; Temperance Bedford RB/LB Lucas Gerber, OL/DL Hunter Faunce; Ann Arbor Huron DE Kyce Shamma. Chelsea LB Luke Webster, OL/DL Kyle Jahr; Adrian WR//DB Isaiah Fox, WR/DB Thomas Dayharsh, RB Chase Henline.

FAB 50: Top 50 players in Michigan high school football and their college commitments

Independents

Bloomfield detroit country day.

Overview : The Yellowjackets have a strong senior core and will sprinkle in several excellent juniors and sophomores. Coach Dan MacLean is counting on the players to jell together quickly because of what he called a “withering schedule” this season as an independent.

Top players : Four-year starter OL/DL Cade Wilhelmi (6-5, 290) and a commit to Toledo; RB/DB Chase Dawkins and starting quarterback the past two years, moving to RB; TE/DE Andrew Gryzenia (6-4, 215, committed to Notre Dame for Lacrosse) and QB/LB Dominic Cassise, whose father was captain of the 1995 state championship team.

Top games : Home opener against state power Portland, at Dearborn Divine Child, hosting Pontiac Notre Dame Prep for homecoming and at Orchard Lake St. Mary in early October.

River Rouge

Overview : The Panthers plan to win games in the trenches, thanks to four offensive lineman and three defensive linemen returning, allowing for offensive ball control and defensive stops. The downside is replacing the team’s top four receivers from last season.

Top players : A top DT statewide is Jordin Farrow (6-3, 275), a Toledo commit; junior DB Dijon Wilson (with multiple D-1 offers); DB Jaheem Richmond (second in team tackles, Wayne State commit); DL Creg Johnson (6-1, 265, Wayne State commit); OL Jaylen Pitts (6-7, 345, Howard commit); QB McKale McDowell (three-year starter); and punishing RB JaPaul Keith (6-2, 230).

Top games : Three of the first four opponents are hosting state power Muskegon Mona Shores, then away at Toledo St. John’s Jesuit and Birmingham Brother Rice.

Livonia Clarenceville

Overview : After graduating a large chuck of the team, 17 juniors return, half of which started last year as 10 th graders. As a Division 5 team playing against a bunch of Div. 2-4 opponents, the Trojans will require growing up fast and staying healthy.

Top players : FB/LB Jaylan Johnson (9.0 yds per carry, 121 tackles on defense); soph. WR/DB Micah Williams (6-foot-2, 180, all-area as freshman); junior TE/LB Deryk Klein (captain); junior WR/DB Kayden Williams; QB/WR/DB Jalen Daniels (track scholarships).

Top games : First three games are on the road, at Melvindale, Macomb Lutheran North and Southgate Anderson. A fun game will be hosting far north Boyne City on Oct. 11.

Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

Overview: Last year’s team finished 9-1 and veteran coach Pat Fox’s program returns eight boys on defense and seven on offense, making for an encouraging outlook. Of course, like all smaller schools, avoiding injuries is key as team depth is always a factor to success.

Top players :  Six players are three-year returning starters: DE Drew Heimbuch; TE/LB Michael Weibelhaus; WR Joe Decasas; OG/DT Jake Gartin; WR/DB Billy Collins; and OG/LB Luca Gasperoni. Add in S Marke Galle; junior OT Henry Ewles; junior WR Drake Roa and junior LB Brody Sink.

Top games : Three jump off the page, hosting Jackson Lumen Christi and defending Div. 5 state champ Grand Rapids Catholic Central at home, and at Detroit Country Day for its homecoming; plus at Div. 1 Troy. Last year ND Prep played six playoff teams and went 8-0 in the regular season.
