Camel Safaris in Jaisalmer and Bikaner: What to Know

Explore the Desert on a Camel Safari in India

camel safari images

Like in Jordan , one of the most unforgettable and enchanting experiences you can have in India is to ride through the rippling, windswept desert on camel back and camp out under the stars. Taking a camel safari will also give you the opportunity to witness the rustic, rural desert life of India. While the desert can be barren, it's also surprisingly well populated. Here's what you need to know to plan your trip.

Where Can You Go on a Camel Safari?

The most popular place for camel safaris in India is in the desert around Jaisalmer , in Rajasthan. To have the best experience, it's important to consider which location is most suitable for you. Most tourists head to the Sam sand dunes, which are unappealingly commercial and crowded these days. The sand dunes near Khuri village in Desert National Park are more peaceful but have started to attract their share of tourists. If you book a camel safari package from Jaisalmer, it will most likely include a stop at abandoned Kuldhara village on the way to Khuri.

Bikaner, also in Rajasthan, is another popular option for camel safaris. However, the desert is nowhere near as impressive as Jaisalmer. You'll be disappointed if you go there expecting undulating sand dunes because they no longer exist. Instead, the safaris generally focus on visiting isolated desert villages.

Great camel safaris can be done at lesser-known Osian (about an hour and a half north of Jodhpur on the way to Bikaner. Stay at Reggie's Camel Camp or Osian Sand Dunes Resort and Camp . The interesting temples at Osian are an added attraction. Manvar Desert Camp and Resort is an exclusive option in the desert at Khiyansariya (between Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Bikaner).

Many camel safari companies will allow you to choose your route, so you can decide if you want to take the road less traveled or the more touristy track. Be specific about it. Otherwise, you'll most likely end up in close proximity to lots of other tourists around Sam or Khuri in Jaisalmer.

If you do want to go on an offbeat sightseeing tour, Vedic Walks offers an overnight Desert Camel Safari and Camping Experience near Pushkar. It includes a safari through villages and a unique spiritual walking tour of the town. Dharma Camel Safari is another option in Puskhar that gets good feedback.

In addition, it's possible to go on a camel safari in the the alpine desert in Ladakh, mainly in the Nubra Valley from Hundar to Diskit . The camels on these trips are the double hump Bactrian variety.

Reputable Camel Safari Companies in Jaisalmer and Bikaner

Be sure to take care when booking your camel safari as the business is very competitive and it's definitely a case of you get what you pay for. Cheaper deals may seem appealing initially, but you'll find that the quality of food, bedding, and other necessities is lower. There will be more people in the group too. Make sure you find out exactly what the arrangements will be, such as whether dinner will be provided at a nearby village or a cook will make it for you over an open fire in the desert.

Most hotels and backpacker hostels in Jaisalmer sell camel safaris (for a commission). However, it's better to go with specialist operators, so you can be sure of what you're getting. Recommended ones include Sahara Travels (next to the Fort gate), Trotters Independent Travel , and Real Desert Man Camel Safaris. Their websites contain details of the various safari packages available. The safaris offered by Shahi Palace, Hotel Pleasant Haveli , Wanderlust Hostel , and Toffu Hotel and are also decent. Many offer non-touristy options away from the crowds.

If heading to Khuri, you can arrive by 4 p.m. and negotiate your camel safari directly with the camps there (they're all situated in a row). On a standard evening safari, you'll spend sunset in the sand dunes and return to the camp for dinner and a cultural program, before leaving for Jaisalmer at about 8.30 p.m.

If you really want to go off the beaten path and have a rustic experience, far from the tourist trail, try The Adventure Travel Agency in Jaisalmer. They'll take you a long camel safari out towards Barmer, sleeping under the stars on army bedding in the dunes.

There are fewer options for camel safaris in Bikaner. The oldest and most well-known operators are Vino Desert Safari, Rao Bikaji Camel Safari , and Camel Man.

Duration of Camel Safaris

It's possible to go on a quick camel safari and return the same day. However, most people prefer to go deeper into the desert for a few days. Many choose the overnight option, which is sensible as it can become monotonous otherwise (and you're likely to end up with a sore bum). This consists of riding the camel into the desert, watching the sunset, having dinner, star gazing, waking up for sunrise, and then riding back. Desert sunsets and sunrises are pretty darn spectacular!

Longer options, up to 30 days are available for hardcore enthusiasts! You can get an itinerary tailored to meet your needs.

How Much Will it Cost?

The price of camel safaris varies according to the route, standard of food and comfort provided. In Jaisalmer, rates start from around 1,000 rupees per person for a reputable sunset camel ride into the dunes and cultural program. Expect to pay 1,600 rupees upwards for a full-day (sunrise and sunset) camel safari package. Quality overnight camel safaris start from around 1,800 rupees per person. However, this can increase to 3,000 rupees for top-of-the-range camping (or glamping!) facilities.

Prices can be negotiated, so don't book anything in advance.

What to Expect

Riding a camel can become surprisingly uncomfortable after a while. Many people complain of having very sore legs and bums by the end of their journey.

On the most basic safaris, you'll be sleeping out under the stars either on a camp bed or on the ground. There are no toilets on these safaris. You'll have to go wild! The more luxurious safaris have established camps with Swiss tents and attached toilets.

The best time is during the cooler dry months, from September to March. After March, the desert becomes unbearably hot, and then the monsoon season starts. It doesn't rain much though, and temperatures remain high. Camel safaris usually depart early in the morning to allow some distance to be covered, and a suitable camping spot to be found and set up, before dusk.

What to Take with You

Bring something comfortable and padded to sit on to make the journey less painful if you're going on a longer safari.

Other useful items to bring include sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, toilet paper, flashlight, insect repellent, water bottle, toothbrush and toothpaste, sleeping bag liner and plenty of warm clothing as it can get cold in the desert at night. Do be aware that you won't be able to bathe in the desert, so wet wipes will definitely come in handy as well.

Camel Safari

camel safari in the desert

Imagine watching a sunset over a big desert with endless sand. You’re sitting on a camel, feeling its smooth steps. This is what a camel safari feels like. A camel safari is not just a trip across the desert; it’s a special adventure that connects you to old traditions and the beauty of nature. Why should you try a camel safari? It’s a unique way to see the desert and learn about its history and animals. Plus, you can travel like people did a long time ago. In this guide, we’ll share everything you need to know about planning a camel safari. Whether it’s your first time or you’ve done it before, this guide will help you get ready. Let’s start this exciting journey!

Understanding the Camel

So, before you hop on and start your camel safari, getting to know these incredible creatures a bit better is essential. Camels are often called the ‘Ships of the Desert.’ But why? Because they have unique body features that make them perfect for life in hot and sandy places.

Their broad, padded feet help them walk easily on sand without sinking. And their humps? Contrary to popular belief, they don’t store water. Instead, they hold fat, which gives them energy when food and water are hard to find.

There are different types of camels, too. Some have one hump, while others have two. The one-humped camel is called a dromedary, commonly found in the Middle East and parts of Africa. On the other hand, the two-humped camel, known as the Bactrian, lives in Central Asia’s colder regions. Each type of camel is special and suited to the area where they live.

But camels are more than just desert travelers. They have been a part of human history for thousands of years, helping people move from place to place, carrying goods, and even providing milk and meat. So, as you prepare for your safari, remember to appreciate these amazing animals for all they offer and their deep connection to the desert’s history and culture.

Getting Ready for Your Camel Ride

what to wear on camel ride in Dubai

Now that we’ve gained a deeper understanding of camels let’s focus on preparing for the ride itself. It’s not just about hopping on; there’s a bit of prep work involved to ensure a comfortable journey.

What to Wear

Deciding what to wear on a camel ride is crucial. We have a detailed guide called “ What to Wear on a Camel Ride ” that you can refer to, but here’s a quick overview. Light, breathable clothing is the way to go. Think of long-sleeved shirts and loose-fitting pants to protect against the sun and prevent chafing. And don’t forget a hat or cap to shield your head from direct sunlight.

What to Bring

Hydration is key! Always have a bottle of water with you. The desert can be deceptive, making you feel cooler than you are because of the dry air, but you’re still losing moisture. Sunscreen is another must-have, protecting your skin from the sun’s strong rays. And, of course, bring a camera or phone to capture the breathtaking views and memories.

Mounting the Camel

This might seem tricky at first, but with a little guidance, it becomes easy. Camels kneel to allow riders to climb aboard. Always approach the camel from the side, not the front or back, because it can get startled. Once you’re seated, hold onto the saddle handle firmly. Remember, the camel will first lift its back legs, then its front, which can be a bit surprising for first-timers, so be prepared.

But it’s not just about being physically ready. Mentally, preparing for the experience is equally important. Understand that camels, while mostly gentle, are living creatures with their own personalities. Some are calm and steady, while others might be a bit more spirited. Always listen to your guide, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. The more informed you are, the more enjoyable your ride will be.

During Your Camel Ride

dress code during camel ride

So, you’ve prepared well and are now aboard this majestic ‘Ship of the Desert.’ But what should you expect during your camel ride? Let’s dive in!

How to Sit Properly

Just like any ride, the way you sit on a camel plays a crucial role in your comfort. Keep your back straight and your feet tucked in front. Don’t lean too far forward or backward. Instead, sway gently with the camel’s movements. This will not only make the journey more pleasant but also lessen any soreness you might feel later.

Camels have a unique, rhythmic gait, different from horses. It might take a little getting used to. Always hold onto the saddle handle, especially when the camel rises or sits. But don’t grip too tightly; remember to relax your hands and arms, allowing for a smoother ride.

The Experience of the Ride

Riding a camel is more than just a physical act. It’s about immersing yourself in the vast desert around you. You’ll notice the endless sea of sand dunes, each with its own shape and size. As you move, the desert might seem silent, but it’s filled with life, from the tiny desert beetles to the larger gazelles in the distance. Each moment offers something new, so keep your eyes peeled.

But remember, as much as you’re enjoying this experience, it’s crucial to be aware of your camel’s needs too. If it seems restless or in distress, notify your guide immediately. After all, a happy camel means a happy ride!

Discovering the Desert Landscape

As you sway atop your camel, immersed in this captivating camel safari, it’s not just the ride that’s mesmerizing but the enchanting desert landscape around you. But what exactly can you expect to discover during this journey?

A Sea of Sand Dunes

The desert isn’t just flat, barren land. It’s a dynamic terrain with dunes that stretch as far as the eye can see. Each dune, shaped by the wind, has its own unique contours and shades, painting a picture of nature’s artistry. But these dunes aren’t static; they’re ever-changing, shifting and evolving with the winds, offering a fresh canvas every time you visit.

Oases in the Desert

Every now and then, you might stumble upon a lush oasis. These green patches in the middle of the desert are like nature’s miracles. They’re vital sources of water and life, attracting various desert creatures. An oasis is more than just a sight; it’s a lesson in nature’s resilience and adaptability.

Desert Wildlife

Contrary to popular belief, the desert is teeming with life. From the swift-footed desert foxes to the graceful gazelles, there’s a whole world of creatures adapted to the harsh desert conditions. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a rare bird or two, making its way across the sky.

Night Sky Wonders

If your camel safari extends into the night, prepare to be awestruck. Far from city lights, the desert sky reveals a tapestry of stars, planets, and meteor showers. It’s a sight that reminds you of the vastness of the universe and the beauty of our little corner in it.

But as you discover these wonders, it’s essential to tread lightly. The desert, although vast, is a fragile ecosystem. Respect its beauty, avoid leaving behind waste, and always listen to your guides about where it’s safe to go and what areas to avoid.

Tips for Enjoying Your Camel Safari

Embarking on a camel safari is an adventure like no other. But to make the most of this experience, a few tips can come in handy. Whether it’s your first time riding a camel or you’ve done it before, these suggestions will help you savor every moment.

Relax and Trust the Process

It’s natural to feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. But remember, camels have been trusted travel companions for centuries. Relax your body, breathe deeply, and let yourself synchronize with the camel’s rhythm. The more relaxed you are, the more enjoyable the ride will be.

Engage with Your Surroundings

While the camel ride is an experience in itself, the desert offers a wealth of sights and sounds. Listen to the whispers of the wind, observe the shifting shadows of the dunes, and let the vastness of the landscape captivate you.

Capture the Moments

A camel safari is a treasure trove of memories waiting to be captured. Whether it’s a breathtaking sunset, a silhouette of your camel against the horizon, or even a selfie with your new four-legged friend, don’t hesitate to take photos and videos. But always ensure your actions don’t disturb the camel or the environment.

Stay Hydrated and Protected

The desert can be deceptively demanding. Regularly sip on water, even if you don’t feel particularly thirsty. And as we mentioned before, always wear sunscreen and protective clothing.

Be Respectful

This isn’t just about respecting your camel, which is crucial, but also the guides and the local culture. Listen to stories, ask questions, and immerse yourself in the traditions of the desert dwellers. This enriches your experience and deepens your understanding of the place.

Enjoy the Small Moments

From a shared laugh with fellow riders to the gentle gait of your camel, it’s the small moments that often leave the most profound impact. Cherish them.

Cultural and Historical Experiences

Venturing through the desert on a camel is more than just an adventurous ride; it’s a voyage through time and traditions. The desert has been a silent witness to countless stories, and a camel safari often becomes the bridge connecting you to these tales.

Bedouin Traditions

The Bedouins, the nomadic desert dwellers, have roamed these sands for centuries. As you journey through the desert, you might encounter their temporary settlements, marked by tents and livestock. It’s a chance to witness their traditional way of life, from brewing aromatic teas to sharing age-old folktales around a campfire. Their hospitality is legendary, and accepting an invitation for tea can be one of the most heartwarming parts of your journey.

Ancient Trade Routes

The deserts were once bustling trade highways. Camels, often termed the ‘ships of the desert,’ played a pivotal role in connecting distant lands. Trace the paths of ancient merchants, who braved the desert’s challenges, carrying spices, silks, and precious gems. Each dune might have a tale of its own, of long-lost caravans and bustling trade hubs now buried in sand.

Desert Architecture

Every now and then, the vast expanse of sand might surprise you with architectural marvels. From ancient forts guarding oasis towns to intricately designed wells, these structures are a testament to human ingenuity in such harsh landscapes. They tell tales of kingdoms, battles, and civilizations that once flourished here.

Music and Dance

The desert nights are often alive with rhythms. Traditional dances, accompanied by the beat of drums and the strumming of lutes, can be a soul-stirring experience. These dances, passed down through generations, are not just entertainment but narrate stories of love, bravery, and the ever-changing desert life.

What Not to Do on a Camel Safari

A camel safari is undoubtedly a memorable adventure, but like every journey, there are do’s and don’ts to keep in mind. While we’ve discussed the things you should do to make the most of your experience, it’s equally essential to know what to avoid. This not only ensures a pleasant journey for you but also shows respect for the animals and local traditions.

Sudden Movements

When you’re atop a camel, sudden actions can startle the animal. Whether it’s reaching out quickly for your camera or making abrupt movements, always remember to stay calm and move gently. Not only will this ensure your safety, but it also makes for a smoother ride.

Loud Noises

Camels, despite their size, can be sensitive creatures. Shouting or making loud noises can stress them out. So, even if the excitement gets the better of you, keep your enthusiasm at a check. And if you’re on a camel ride with others, remind them to do the same.

Overloading the Camel

These resilient ‘ships of the desert’ have been carrying loads for centuries. But that doesn’t mean they should be overloaded. Always adhere to weight limits and avoid carrying unnecessary items. Respect the camel’s well-being and remember that they too can get tired.

Ignoring the Guide's Advice

Your guide knows best. They have, after all, spent years understanding camels and the desert terrain. Whether it’s instructions on how to mount the camel, where to hold on, or when to take breaks, always listen to their advice. Ignoring it could lead to unforeseen problems.

Disturbing the Natural Habitat

The desert might seem vast and endless, but it’s a delicate ecosystem. Picking plants, chasing wildlife, or leaving behind trash are big no-nos. Always carry a small bag to dispose of any waste and ensure you leave the desert as pristine as you found it.

Neglecting Personal Care

The desert’s beauty can be mesmerizing, but it’s also a harsh environment. Not wearing sunscreen, forgetting to hydrate, or wearing inappropriate clothing might seem like small oversights but can have significant consequences. Always prioritize your well-being.

A camel safari isn’t merely about riding a camel; it’s an immersion into deep history, rich traditions, and the profound mystique of the desert. Every step taken on this journey offers insights, from the graceful stride of the camel to the ever-changing hues of the desert sands.

Preparation is Key

Being well-prepared ensures a smooth and enriching safari experience. It’s not just about packing the right items or wearing the appropriate attire, but also about having a mindful presence. Respecting the desert’s fragile environment and the animals that call it home makes the journey rewarding for both you and the world around you.

Are you a traveller at heart?

You may have a never-ending bucket list full of adventures you can’t wait to take. But, with only a few weeks a year open for vacations, you probably want to make the most of every trip.

The Middle East is full of breathtaking sites and interesting culture, unlike anything you see back home. Among these countries, the UAE stands as one of the most popular tourist destinations. In fact, Dubai is the fourth most visited city in the entire world!

So, how can you make your trip to the UAE unforgettable? Riding a camel in the desert is touted as a once in a lifetime experience. But there’s more to a desert safari than meets the eye.

Do you want to know more? Keep reading to discover what to expect when riding a camel on a desert safari.

People Will Try to Sell You Desert Safaris on the Street

As one of the most popular tourist activities, you can bet that you’ll run into tons of people trying to sell you desert safaris wherever you go. Since this will be one of the highlights of your trip, you should avoid these street sellers at all costs.

Instead, do your research before you arrive in the UAE. Find a reputable company that has good reviews and a safari option that meets your needs. This will help ensure you have a great time on your safari and can happily cross one item off your bucket list.

Safaris Can Be Very Long

A desert safari and a camel ride are two very different things. A camel ride usually only takes a few minutes, but a safari is much longer. There are many different safari lengths and options, ranging from a full day camel safari to a month-long desert safari!

When planning your trip, make a list of everything you want to do. Decide how much time you’re willing to spend riding a camel on a safari, and make sure you have enough time left over for all the other wonderful things to do in the UAE.

It’s Not the Same as Horseback Riding

“I’ve ridden horses before, so a camel should be no problem!” Well, not exactly. The truth is riding a camel and riding a horse are very different. You’ll have to learn how to mount a camel and how to properly balance yourself.

During an overnight safari , you’ll likely only spend a couple hours at a time riding a camel. This is because it’s very hard on your bottom, and you’ll notice that your butt will begin to hurt before the day is over. But don’t let this deter you – it’s all worth it!

When you plan your trip to the UAE, make sure to include room for a desert safari on your itinerary. Riding a camel in the desert is considered one of the top things to do, but it’s not as easy as it looks. Be prepared to search for a reputable safari company, make time for a multi-day safari, and be prepared for your butt to hurt.

Are you ready to take the next step? Book your camel safari with us today!

Camel Safari

Camel Safari in India

What is camel safari.

camel safari images

What better way to explore the desert than on the back of an animal that has for aeons been associated with these immense tracts of sand? A camel safari is the perfect way to discover desert regions – especially areas as historically and culturally rich as Rajasthan, or as vast and awe-inspiring as the Nubra Valley in Ladakh. Ensconce yourself contentedly on the back of an ungulate and admire the sand dunes around you extending for miles – as far as your eye can see. A camel can take you places where a jeep or ordinary motor vehicle will struggle to reach (and only the camel can successfully navigate the dunes). Not for nothing is the camel known as the ‘ship of the desert’; for centuries, it was the only means of transport available in these often inhospitable stretches of land. A camel safari, then, makes for a magical journey, one unlike any other you’ll ever experience.

There’s probably no better (or more romantic) way of seeing Rajasthan than on the back of a dromedary. Crisscross the sands during the day – get up close with Rajasthan’s splendid architecture and wonderful hospitality – and sleep under the stars at night. Boasting the awesome vastness of the Thar Desert, Rajasthan is quite obviously the top destination for camel safaris in India. You can tread the caravan routes of old, passing hamlets and desert communities almost unchanged over time. Most of the safaris take place around Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur. The classic camel safari (among the many worth experiencing) is the Bikaner-Jaisalmer one, which covers (approximately) 25km-30km every day over 11 days. Safaris are of varying duration – you can choose from half- and full-day journeys to month-long tests of endurance. Up towards India’s northern extremity is the stunning Nubra Valley, where safaris are conducted on the rare double-humped Bactrian camel. A ride on the back of one of these magnificent creatures allows you to delight in the valley’s quaint villages and Buddhist traditions, making for a truly memorable experience. Know more about Desert and Camel Safari in India .

Best season in India

In Rajasthan, the winter months (October to March) are ideal, while summer is the best time for a camel safari in Nubra Valley.

Camel Safari sites in India

Rajasthan – Around Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur (also Nagaur, Pushkar, Shekhawati) Ladakh – Nubra Valley (from Hundar to Diskit)

Prior to booking a camel safari, choose your operator with care – make sure it actually is providing the facilities it claims to be doing so. Bring a padded cushion to sit on – a journey on a camel’s back can get rather uncomfortable! Also bring along sunscreen, sunglasses, moisturizer, lip salve, flashlight, toilet paper and a towel, along with plenty of water and warm clothing. Before you embark on a camel safari, here are a few important things to keep in mind: 1. When mounting a camel, lean back 2. When the camel stands up, or sits down, lean back and grip the reins firmly 3. Always grip the reins when the camel is moving – you will be rocked back and forth, though gently! 4. When turning right, pull the right rein towards your right; when turning left, pull the left rein to your left 5. When the camel gallops, pull both reins together slowly, and give the camel a slight kick on both sides 6. To get the camel to stop, pull both reins backwards quickly 7. To get the camel to sit down, pull both reins 8. To get the camel to start walking, pull the reins up 9. Avoid provoking a camel – and don’t give it any food!

Medical concerns

A camel safari can be a test of stamina – especially if you’re planning a ride of a week or more. Even the short-duration safaris demand a decent level of physical fitness. If you’re afflicted by a medical condition, bring the necessary prescribed medication – but it is advised that you get an all-clear from your doctor before going on a camel safari. Also, carry anti-malaria tablets and a first-aid kit. Above all, since you’re out in the desert, drink plenty of water to keep yourself rehydrated.

Ecological concerns

The desert is as ecologically fragile as other ecosystems. So do leave it as clean as you found it – and don’t litter.

Top 5 camel safaris in Africa

Camel shadows on the sand, Morocco

The continent of Africa is known for its wide range of terrain – from the dry plains of the Serengeti to the lush jungles of the Congo, which help to attract tourists to the national parks in search of exciting safari adventures and eco-tourist trips.

If you’re looking for an unusual way to see the landscapes of Africa, a camel trek could be right up your street.

Camel tours are popular amongst tourists to desert regions, from excursions of a few hours to week long camping trips through desert landscapes.

These trails allow you the opportunity to explore landscapes, view wildlife from the backs of these hardy beasts and sleep under the stars within camps where you can rest up and enjoy local food delicacies.

Whether you’re looking to travel around for just a few hours or embark on a week long desert safari, here’s a quick guide to a few countries that can be explored using the animal affectionately known as ‘the ship of the desert’.

Camel Trekking in Egypt

Saint Catherine's Monastery, South Sinai Peninsula, Egypt

Desert tours by camel are available from the resorts of Sharm El Sheikh as well as on the outskirts of Cairo, and give you the chance to escape the pyramids to try something a little different.

Take a trip over the dunes of the Sinai region shaped by swirling winds over thousands of years, exploring sights such as St Catherine’s Monastery and the scenery of the Arada Canyon .

This particular tour begins in Cairo, taking you over the dunes of the Great Sand Sea in a twelve-day excursion across the dunes, en route to the cities of El Qasr and Bahariya – where you can relax and enjoy some traditional Egyptian cuisine.

Along the way there is the chance to stop and rest at traditional Bedouin settlements , sample local food such as Maglubeh (a chicken and vegetable dish) and Mansaf (a lamb dish served with rice).

Also enjoy a cup of mint tea after a day’s trekking in the harsh desert climate.

Tunisia Camel Trips

Troglodyte home dug in the desert rock, Matmata, Tunisia

Beginning at the ancient ruins at Carthage, just outside of Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, this 12 day excursion visits some of the nation’s most famous monuments – including the Great Mosque of Kairouan and the Colosseum at El Djem.

The deserts of Tunisia have acted as a backdrop for many Hollywood films: Star Wars, Indiana Jones and The English Patient.

The dwellings of Matmata offer a hotel service along the way, giving you the opportunity to spend the night in these bizarrely unique dwellings on your journey across the Sahara.

The occasion is also too good to rest and recuperate at a traditional Berber village. Discover a number of Roman ruins such as Dougga before your return to Tunis.

Morocco Camel Tours

Wild camels in the Moroccan desert

Morocco has a varied landscape from the Atlas Mountains to the Sahara Desert , both of which can be explored on camel tours, where you’ll be accompanied by local guides and learn all about the Berber people.

Beginning in the historic city of Marrakech , this tour starts with a drive over the trails that wind through the Atlas Mountains.

Stop at kasbahs along the way, including the UNESCO recognised Aït Benhaddou , a Kasbah (or fortified city) which has acted as a backdrop for films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator.

Upon reaching Ouled Driss , you will then hop on board your camels and embark on a trek over sand dunes, passing palm plantations on the way.

During the journey you will cross the Wadi Draa (Morocco’s longest river), enjoying traditional tajine-cooked Moroccan food and superb sunsets as you set up camp for the evening.

Upon your return to Ouled Driss you have the opportunity to explore the town and purchase some souvenirs such as pottery and jewellery before your journey back to Marrakesh.

Namibia Desert Rides

Camel safari in the Namib-Naukluft desert

Namibia is a nation of geographical extremes – from the dry Namib desert to the rugged and rocky Skeleton Coast .

The Skeleton Coast stretches for 6200 miles down Namibia’s west coast and is littered with wrecks and whale bones which have bleached in the sun over the years, as well as vast colonies of fur seals .

Exploring the Namib-Naukluft Park by camel (around a four-hour drive west of the capital Windhoek) allows you the possibility to experience the harsh conditions of an ever changing landscape.

Catch a glimpse of the wildlife that call the Namibian deserts home – including fennec foxes, gemsbok antelope, brown hyenas and jackals.

Tours range from two-hour treks along a dry riverbed to day-long trails which take you deep into the desert, with an overnight stay in a camp en-route before returning to base camp at Hilton Farm.

Tanzania Camel Safaris

Camels resting, with Mt Kilimanjaro in the background

Tanzania is the location of Mt Kilimanjaro – the highest mountain in Africa at over 19 000 ft.

Camel safari tours around the foot of the mountain can be an excellent way of viewing a rich range of flora and fauna of the Kilimanjaro National Park – from antelope and elephants to leopards and hyenas .

Over three days you can explore the national park on camelback, accompanied by local Maasai guides who will provide knowledge of the area and some of the best places to spot wildlife.

After a day’s trekking you can relax in comfortable tents and drift off to sleep whilst listening to the sounds of the wildlife outside.

Packing Essentials For Your Trip

Camel safari in the Sahara desert, Morocco

When preparing for a camel tour it is essential to include the following items  in your luggage:

• Light and comfortable clothing – including long sleeved shirts and blouses.

• Comfortable hiking shoes.

• Hats, scarves, sunglasses and plenty of sunscreen.

• Sleeping bag.

Several tours offer the chance to rent some of these items, though it can be worth double checking their availability before you travel.

The Erg Chebbi sand dunes at Merzouga represent an excellent centre for the exploration of Morocco’s sandy or true desert, they are considered to be one of the great sights of Morocco, The Erg Chebbi dunes can be reached most directly from Erfoud through an off-road trail or via Rissani on paved road. The Erg Chebbi desert dunes fascinate Moroccans and foreigners alike. Mention “Merzouga” anywhere in Morocco and people will tell you of the power of the sands to cure rheumatics who come here to be buried up to the neck in the sand. Widely believed, but never seen! The Erg Chebbi dunes also have a wide-ranging aesthetic appeal; witness the film directors, writers, artists and photographs who struggle to convey their beauty.

Camel Safaries welcomes you to one of the most interesting places to stay during your visit to Morocco– the beautiful and amazing sand dunes of Erg Chebbi in the Southeast of Morocco.

A camel ride is a great way to experience the dunes. For those up for the ultimate adventure, we offer desert tours that will take you through the Erg Chebbi dunes on a camel. Watching the sun rise or set over the sand dunes of Merzouga may be the most spectacular experience you have on your trip to Morocco. The Erg Chebbi, the name of these sand dunes, is said to have some of the highest dunes in Morocco. Indeed, the dunes and the desert wildlife are impressive. Merzouga is an excellent base from which to explore the desert, and bird-watchers will be enthralled with what they see. A lake forms near Merzouga which attracts pink flamingos, and other rare birds stop here during spring migration. The desert is also the year round environment for many desert reptiles and mammals.

Take an overnight excursion over the dunes for an experience to remember. You will see waves and waves of sand dunes at sunset as you ride your camel. In the morning, you will watch the sunrise from Algeria as it catches the dunes, and in the evening, enjoy a campfire dinner before you fall asleep under the stars. Either in the middle of the desert or in the surrounding villages, you will experience the life the nomads did inside an authentic berber tent. This wonderful experience is the perfect romantic setting in the desert of Erg Chebbi.
